Adobe Cautions Users Against License Key Phishing Scam

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 04:06 PM PST

Ho, ho, horrible attempts at phishing

'Tis the season for phishing scams. You've probably already seen quite a few here and there, and now there's another one to add to the list. There's a license key scam swirling around inboxes from scammers claiming to be Adobe, straight from the company itself.

Adobe reports the campaign attempts to lure users to download a ZIP attachment containing an executable file with malware inside. As usual, the actual email itself (viewable via ZDNet) is riddled with weird sentence structure and pronouns that aren't capitalized, so it shouldn't be difficult for tech-savvy users to tell if it's a fake -- especially if they haven't even purchased an Adobe product in the past.

Keep safe while attending to your holiday affairs, and don't open up that executable file!

Extra storage for the holidays

If you're a lucky owner of a Windows Phone or have a giftee in mind who would love some extra storage space, it's about to be one happy holiday! Microsoft is offering extra SkyDrive storage for free in an email announcement sent to all Windows Phone users. That's 20 GB of free storage up for grabs (active for a year) so all told, 27 GB of storage simply or being a Windows Phone user!

Unfortunately (via TechSpot) it looks as thouh this offer was only sent out to Windows 8 phone adopters, so if you run to your mailbox and find it a little bare, your Windows 7 phone may be the reason. Still, most Windows Phone users have a little something to celebrate as the holidays roll around, even if it's just a little more space to store their photos.

Fa'el: Beyond the Gate Allows PC Gamers to Explore "2.75D" World

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 10:36 AM PST

Independent platformer looks awesomely retro

We don't normally take much time to gush about too many games here at Maximum PC, but there's one that just may enhance that sense of holiday cheer that's brewing inside you -- especially for fans of the retro 16-bit aesthetic. It's called Fa'el: Beyond the Gate, and it's am ambitious PC release from independent developer Miguel Angel Perez Martinez. It also happens to be one of the coolest things you'll probably see today.

Fa'el: Beyond the Gate (via PC Gamer) is an action/adventure platformer set inside a 2.75D world -- not 2D or 3D, but 2.75D. Sound confusing? Check out the trailer, which showcases a masterful blend of the 16-bit sprites from yesteryear and plentiful planes on which to explore with them. The world turns as you turn, twisting around with each new doorway and passage discovered. It's difficult to describe without showing what we mean, so give the video a watch.

Interesting enough as an aside, the game is being developed alongside a companion app for the Game Boy! It won't be required, but anyone looking to pick up a rom to be used with an emulator will be treated to codes that can be used to unlock special content.

It's mindbendingly gorgeous, and while it's not out just yet, you can check out its Steam concept page and official site for some more details until it hits Steam Greenlight. Anyone interested in trying it out at some point?
