Wings Over Atreia: Aion anniversary -- third one's the charm! Posted: 24 Sep 2012 08:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Aion, Events, in-game, Reviews, Opinion, Free-to-play, Wings Over Atreia, Anniversary Yup, it's that time of year again: Pass out the party hats and douse the crowd in confetti 'cause Aion has grown another year older. And what a year it has been! Known universally as the terrible twos, this past year has been anything but for the fantasy game.Much has happened in the world of Atreia since the last annual roundup. With two major content updates and an expansion, Aion has significantly increased the available content in-game. Not only that, but the move to free-to-play significantly increased the game's availability. If you haven't been in-game recently, now is a good time to stretch your wings and return to Atreia. And if you head back within the next month, you can join in the anniversary celebration. Continue reading Wings Over Atreia: Aion anniversary -- third one's the charm! The Secret World gets a new game director, title of Issue #3 announced Posted: 24 Sep 2012 07:45 AM PDT Filed under: Horror, Sci-fi, MMO industry, The Secret World Funcom's finally named a replacement for The Secret World's game director spot: Joel Bylos. Bylos is moving up from his previous position as lead content designer, and Ragnar Tørnquist is pulling back from his role as senior producer to pour his energies into being creative director.Bylos is psyched at the move: "Being given the opportunity to lead the game into a bold, new future is definitely a dream come true for me. I am very proud of what we as a team have created with The Secret World, and it is truly a brilliant canvas that will allow us to create more groundbreaking MMO experiences for many years to come. The Secret World is only really getting started, and with a game world that draws upon our own, real world, there is no limit to what sort of amazing stories we can tell and fantastic locations we can visit in the upcoming content updates." Bylos and Tørnquist are hard at work leading the team through the next two patches. Funcom announced that this month's Issue #3 is titled The Cat God and Issue #4 will feature the New York City monster raid. The Daily Grind: Are you returning to World of Warcraft for the expansion? Posted: 24 Sep 2012 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Culture, Expansions, MMO industry, Opinion, The Daily Grind If you're at all interested in MMOs, it's been nigh-impossible not to learn about the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion through osmosis if nothing else. If you're currently playing the game, of course, buying the expansion and logging in is a no-brainer. But if you're like many people with an old account and some mixed memories about the game, buying the expansion isn't a given. It all comes down to the expansion's features and how satisfied you are with your current games.Maybe the promise of Pandaren, new levels, new systems, and a new talent system has lured you back into the fold. Or perhaps those same changes have turned you off from Mists of Pandaria. Perhaps it's even deeper than that -- perhaps one of the previous expansions killed your interest in the game to the point that this expansion can't revive it. So today we want to know: Are you returning for Mists of Pandaria, or are you staying on the sidelines? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! If you missed a big MMO or WoW Insider story last week, you've come to the right post. After finally releasing The Secret World's Digging Deeper update in the wake of several delays, Funcom once again hinted that a free-to-play option might be on the horizon. In the meantime, the company has released another free trial for would-be players who want to take the game out for a three-day test drive. But don't worry about the health of the game, says Massively's TSW expert Jef Reahard; the title's uniqueness and Funcom's determination could still ensure the game's future in the genre. Enjoy the rest of this week's top MMO articles and opinions past the break. EVE Evolved: Four great new EVE videos Posted: 23 Sep 2012 04:00 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, Video, EVE Online, Culture, Game mechanics, Lore, PvP, Opinion, Machinima, EVE Evolved, DUST 514, Guides, Sandbox If there's one thing the EVE Online community is well known for (apart from the occasional colossal scam or game-breaking exploit), it's producing great videos. In its nine-year history, EVE has birthed some very talented video editors who have produced everything from political propaganda and instructional videos to amazing cinematic stories and machinima. The official game trailers have always turned heads, but I'd bet a significant number of current players were first introduced to EVE through player-made works of art like Kyoko Sakoda's War Has Come or Mercenary Coalition's Lacrimosa Tortuga. It's easy to fixate on only the best EVE videos ever made, but in reality, dozens of new videos are released every month. Some are cinematic story pieces or alliance propaganda videos designed to motivate the troops, but most are just compilations of good PvP fights. While PvP videos are unlikely to grab the universal acclaim of incredible films like Clear Skies or Future Proof, they arguably show the very core of EVE at its best: good fights, solid strategy, and pretty explosions. In this week's EVE Evolved, I look at four great new EVE Online videos produced just in the past few months. Posted: 23 Sep 2012 02:00 PM PDT Filed under: Galleries, Screenshots, Aion, Fallen Earth, Massively Meta, One Shots, World of Tanks, TERA, Miscellaneous Resident Massively Aion columnist MJ Guthrie could sum up the best reason to play her favorite MMO in just one word: wings! That's something reader Leandra plainly echoes in today's featured One Shots submission. She sent us this image of her character soaring through Aion along with this note:I've been toying around with Aion a bit and took my baby Chanter, Elanyne, for her first flight through the Abyss. I kept an eye out for Elyos, but thankfully (though somewhat disappointingly), I was able to quest in peace. I guess I'll have to level up more and then go looking to pick some fights! You red, you dead -- that's what I always say! Leandra's flight and a few other reader screenies are tucked beyond the break. Continue reading One Shots: Wings One Shots: Wings originally appeared on Massively on Sun, 23 Sep 2012 16:00:00 EST.
