Feature  The Vita's Challenge: A History of Portable CompetitionTo succeed, Sony's new handheld must escape the long shadow cast by two decades of Nintendo's domination.By: Jeremy Parish February 21, 2012 Today marks the official U.S. launch of PlayStation Vita. It's a great system, but it has its work cut out for it. Nintendo's 3DS is making serious inroads after a soft launch, and Sony runs the very real risk of seeing history repeat itself. To date, Nintendo has triumphed against every handheld competitor to challenge it since the Game Boy launched 23 years ago. We can't predict how the Vita/3DS battle will turn out just yet, but we can certainly look to history to see how Nintendo has consistently triumphed over its impressive competitors.

| Warp Review: A Downloadable Puzzler That's Equal Parts Bloody And Brilliant Posted: 21 Feb 2012 03:15 PM PST Your story begins with you looking through the eyes of a creature as it's being carted through a laboratory by ominous looking scientists and military-types. An antiseptic white dominates the color palette to a point where you can almost smell the disinfectant. Once the camera zooms out, you discover that your avatar is a semi-transparent alien whose cute features are more Monsters, Inc. than menacing. Why are there so many armed guards for something so cute? Well, that question is quickly answered after you warp inside the body of a scientist and proceed to blow it into a heap of bloody chunks. Warp is a downloadable title that continues the tradition of last year's Catherine as puzzlers wrapped in the guise of an M-rated story. Your goal is to guide your extraterrestrial out of the laboratory by any means necessary. While your powers start off with the simple ability to warp through walls, you'll quickly gain the prowess to do more complex maneuvers like hurling objects via telekinesis and creating ethereal copies of yourself. This wide array of tactical options opens up the challenges, and allow you to navigate the environment as you see fit. Say you have to cross a room filled with barrels, passive scientists, and armed guards. You're presented with the choice of either warping through the room from scientist to scientist, hurling a barrel to cause a distraction, or just go all Scanners on the room and murder everyone in sight. Warp is truly a game built for stealthy pacifists, homicidal maniacs, and everyone in-between. |
| OP-ED: Nintendo Direct Unlikely to Reveal Redesigned 3DS Tomorrow Posted: 21 Feb 2012 02:15 PM PST A series of Nintendo Direct events are set to take place tomorrow, as creatively announced today through Swapnote messages sent out to 3DS owners. This is the third time Nintendo Direct is taking place and as Nintendo of America and Europe will each be hosting their own videos, as opposed to a broadcast only in Japanese, we should be getting much more information that is of interest to those outside of Japan. The trend seems to be for Nintendo to showcase content through Nintendo Direct every two months. The first one took place in October, and although it did not bring with it any earth-shattering revelations, there were some newsworthy announcements. We received details on the 3DS system update adding 3D movie recordings and new StreetPass content, specifics on Mario Kart 7's online functionality, and new games were announced for Japan. |
