Dead Rising 2 Producer: Off The Record's Checkpoint System Won't Undermine Game's Integrity Posted: 21 Jul 2011 06:30 PM PDT Capcom is showing off Dead Rising 2: Off the Record, the not-quite-a-director's-cut version of last year's action game that will launch later this year as a reduced-price retail disc. Executive Producer Jason Leigh says that despite the similarity of content to the original Dead Rising 2, Off the Record is a significantly larger game that's seen sweeping changes in all areas, making it far too bulky to exist as a DLC add-on. The big hook for Off the Record is that it essentially retells Dead Rising 2 as if its main character had been the first game's protagonist, war-covering photojournalist Frank West. That should be welcome news for West's fans. Off the Record incorporates plenty of other changes as well, thanks in large part to the full integration of the first game's camera system. But perhaps the most significant change, at least in terms of series standards, is the addition of a checkpoint system to help mitigate the brutality of Dead Rising's notoriously unforgiving save mechanics. But Leigh is quick to clarify that he doesn't see this as a compromise to what both the game and Capcom stand for. |
Zelda Symphony Concert Kicks Off in L.A. This October Posted: 21 Jul 2011 05:38 PM PDT Individual songs from the Zelda games are being picked out by Koji Kondo and his team. Kondo has been the composer on countless Nintendo games, including many of the Mario and Zelda games made over the past few decades. The concerts themselves are being produced by Jason Michael Paul Productions, which is also responsible for the Play! A Video Game Symphony tour. The orchestra will be made up of 70 members, and a choir will also be involved as new arrangements of classic songs from the franchise are performed. |
San Diego Comic-Con: Capcom Has the Best Giveaway on the Show Floor Posted: 21 Jul 2011 04:49 PM PDT Of all the reasons to stand in line for an hour at San-Diego Comic-Con, I think I'm most down with Capcom's booth to promote Asura's Wrath. You wait in line, enter a soundproof booth, and you scream at the top of your lungs. Scream loud enough and they give you fake Asura hair. Well, the prize is sort of goofy, but in the case I think the real victory is simply the challenge. After being crushed by the ocean of humans milling about the show floor, you kinda just want to scream at the top of your lungs. Maybe punch things, too. And Capcom gives you that opportunity. |
Dhalsim, Yoshimitsu, and Two Others Join the Street Fighter X Tekken Roster Posted: 21 Jul 2011 03:47 PM PDT On the Street Fighter side, series mainstay Dhalsim and his stretchy limbs will unsurprisingly be available. Poison, who was originally a Final Fight character, has also been confirmed by producer Yoshinori Ono. Tekken adds boxer Steve Fox and ninja Yoshimitsu. Besides the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions that are in the works, SF X Tekken is also coming to PlayStaton Vita. The game will feature a bonus character -- Infamous protagonist Cole -- on Vita. |
Freddy Krueger is Mortal Kombat's Fourth DLC Character Posted: 21 Jul 2011 03:17 PM PDT Unfortunately, Krueger looks to be based on the 2010, Michael Bay-produced A Nightmare on Elm Street, as opposed to Wes Craven's 1984 original. The older film saw Krueger played by Robert Englund, whereas last year the role was assumed by Jack E. Haley, who also played Rorschach in Watchmen. Disappointing as that may be, this is still Frederick Charles Krueger you'll be playing as in Mortal Kombat -- fatalities and all. Like the previous DLC characters, he will cost $4.99 (400 Microsoft Points) upon release on August 9. |
San Diego Comic-Con: He-Man Needs to Buy Some Freakin' Underwear Posted: 21 Jul 2011 02:59 PM PDT Yeah, I glanced to the side as I was walking past this massive He-Man statue and got an eyeful of what's under his barbarian togs. Turns out the answer is "nothing at all." It also turns out that "manscaping" appears to be all the rage in Eternia. Who knew? So much for this being a family-oriented event! I mean, bodies are beautiful and we shouldn't be ashamed of them and all, but even I'm too young for this particular lesson in sex-ed. See, this is why I hate to stray outside of Comic-Con's marginalized video games ghetto. You never know what horrors await. |
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition Out in August Posted: 21 Jul 2011 02:55 PM PDT Whether you prefer Street Fighter to Marvel vs. Capcom or just can't wait until November for the new Ultimate version of MvC3, you'll have a new Capcom fighting game to play in about a month's time. After announcing the lengthily-titled Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition at last year's Comic-Con, this year Capcom has given us a release date: the PlayStation Network version will be out on August 23, followed a day later, on August 24, by the Xbox Live Arcade version. Even for fans who have played 3rd Strike in one of its different forms before, there's more than a few new features here. Besides online play (which itself isn't new; the Xbox's Street Fighter Anniversary Collection had that), there will be new Trials, Tournament, and Spectator modes. Vault Points are earned by playing that can be used to unlock bonus content, and replay sharing allows players to upload videos to YouTube or watch live streaming replays. |
Play The Old Republic Early by Pre-Ordering Now Posted: 21 Jul 2011 01:44 PM PDT Today's announcement claims that pre-orders will be limited; it's unclear if this is to limit the number of people who will get in early or simply a way of encouraging gamers to act fast. As for the different versions, the Standard Edition includes the game and 30 days of game time for $59.99. The Digital Deluxe Edition (available only through Origin) includes all of that and five virtual items (the Flare Gun, Training Droid, personal HoloDancer, HoloCam, and STAP vehicle) for $79.99. The Collector's Edition price jumps up to $149.99 and includes all of the aforementioned in addition to an exclusive mouse droid, physical items -- a Darth Malgus statue (made by Gentle Giant), Jedi Master Gnost Dural journal (from Chronicle Books), soundtrack, security key, and a map of the in-game galaxy -- and access to the in-game Collector's Store which holds CE-exclusive in-game items. |
NBA 2K12 Cover Opts for Three Legends This Time Around Posted: 21 Jul 2011 01:28 PM PDT Each of the three will have his own cover, all of which are more extravagant and stylized than past covers. (2K Sports says this style is a one-time thing.) The Bird and Magic covers will be available "in a limited quantity" at launch; Jordan will again be the primary cover star. There's no indication that the limited edition versions will be any different than the Jordan version; there's no need to worry about missing out on anything more than the design if you aren't able to land a copy with Magic or Bird on the front. |
Star Wars Xbox 360 Console Will Have Fans Drooling (and Opening Their Wallets) Posted: 21 Jul 2011 11:29 AM PDT Beyond the (supremely awesome) look of the console, there's more to it: R2-D2 sounds are played when powering it on or ejecting the disc tray (hear those here and here, courtesy of Major Nelson). According to Gizmodo, the disc tray hides a secret message -- the first time anything has been put there by Microsoft -- which reads, "Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope." The included Kinect ditches the existing black color scheme in favor of white to match the system, and the accompanying wireless controller is a shiny gold with what looks like exposed wires meant to resemble C-3PO. |
