Monster Hunter World came as a surprise during the Sony presentation during this year's E3.. but after we picked our jaws up off the ground.. my next thought was, "How will this affect Dauntless?"

IO Interactive Goes Indie, Keeps the Hitman IP

IO Interactive Goes Indie, Keeps the Hitman IP

IO Interactive has gone independent! Company leaders signed a deal with Square Enix to buy out management as well as to maintain control over the Hitman IP.

IO Interactive CEO’s letter

Company CEO Hakan Abrak  wrote a long letter on the official site. Here it is in its entirety:

In its 19 years of history, Io-Interactive has brought you original and exciting entertainment; from Mini Ninjas and Freedom Fighters to gaming's most notorious criminals Kane & Lynch and of course our beloved Agent 47. With our latest game, we have not only transformed Hitman, but also moved our entire studio into the AAA digital era. Our live product has disrupted the video game business and has received recognition and praise from press, community and our fans.

There are many tales of hope, dreams, hardship and joy within these walls. We have never strived for the expected or predictable. Instead, we are always in pursuit for what feels original and real. Our passion and determination has never been greater and so that is why we have decided it is not the time to stop as we have many more exciting and original tales to tell.

Therefore I am proud to announce today that IOI is now officially an independent studio. We have successfully concluded our negotiations with Square Enix and have agreed to a management buyout. Crucially, we will keep all of the rights to the Hitman IP.

Hitman’s Future

This is a watershed moment for IOI. As of today, we have complete control over the direction for our studio and the Hitman IP – we're about to forge our own future and it's incredibly exciting. We are now open to opportunities with future collaborators and partners to help strengthen us as a studio and ensure that we can produce the best games possible for our community.

I would like to say a big and sincere thank you to all of our players, community, friends in the media and everyone else connected to the studio for the messages of support that we have received in the last few weeks. I would also like to thank Square Enix; it has been a great family to be a part of and we are proud of what we have achieved together in the last eight years. IOI started as an independent studio and we will now return to those roots with an extremely passionate and talented team.

We are counting on the continued support of all our players; simply by having fun with everything we've released so far for HITMAN – and we want to encourage more of you to try our game. We have more details to come on our plans for that next week.

Ellie Gibson on E3

Posted: 17 Jun 2017 12:00 AM PDT

In the beginning was the word, and the word was: "EXCLUSIVE."

And Lo, the word did boom out across the Microsoft E3 conference at regular intervals, as though the voice of God was speaking; as though the Lord has nothing better to do than tell everyone that Black Desert will be available only on Xbox. For a limited time.

And the people cried unto the Lord, "But Lord! What is the difference between an exclusive, a timed exclusive, a console launch exclusive, and an exclusive world premiere console launch exclusive?"

Here's how The Crew 2's vehicular triathlon will work

Posted: 16 Jun 2017 12:57 PM PDT

Ubisoft has revealed how The Crew 2's multi-vehicle races will work.

As teased in the game's announcement trailer at the Ubisoft E3 press event, The Crew 2 greatly expands upon its "CarPG" predecessor by adding boats and planes to the mix.

The way this works is like a triathlon. You'll race one leg of the journey in a car, then, upon hitting the checkpoint, you'll skip to a boat race, and finally you'll transition into an airplane for the final leg of the journey.

Call of Cthulhu looks suitably creepy in its E3 trailer

Posted: 16 Jun 2017 12:33 PM PDT

Blood Bowl and Styx: Master of Shadows developer Cyanide showed off a glimpse of its upcoming Call of Cthulhu RPG for E3.

While the latest trailer contains little, if any, actual gameplay, it appears to be in-engine at least and gives us a good sense of the game's ominous art direction.

The game puts players in the role of private investigator Edward Pierce as he investigates the death of a family on the not too subtly named Darkwater Island. Along the way he'll question his sanity as he encounters cultists, conspiracies, elder gods, and the like.

Eurogamer's best of E3 2017

Posted: 16 Jun 2017 05:55 AM PDT

Wow, that was a long one. E3 2017 began for our away team on Friday last week, for those of us back in the UK on Saturday night, and has barely let up since. I've already mentioned that the volume of hype is now out of all proportion to the number of brand new game reveals, and that this is creating the impression of a flat show - but that impression isn't a wholly accurate one. The buzz from the show floor has been positive - thanks in part to the raw enthusiasm brought by the decision to admit members of the public. And, as ever, there has been a ton of games to see. And many of them have seemed excellent!

As we did last year, we're taking a simple approach to naming our picks of the show: five games, no more, no less, receive our E3 2017 Editors' Choice award. They are not ranked, not divided by genre, and not separated by any other category of achievement. In order to be eligible, games must have been available to watch or play in a live gameplay demonstration, so no CGI trailers or canned gameplay reveals. Hands-on time isn't a must, although it helps (and, in fact, we did get to play all five winning games this year).

Some of the most exciting games from this year's show weren't eligible for our awards: Beyond Good & Evil 2 had a spectacular CGI trailer, but is a very distant and vague prospect, with a slightly suspect relationship to the cult original. Anthem wows technically, and EA swears its Xbox conference demo was recorded in real time on Xbox One X, but we weren't given an opportunity to verify this for ourselves - ditto Metro Exodus. And we were disappointed not to see Sony Santa Monica's new God of War in the flesh, because it looks terrific.

Hitman developer Io-Interactive is now an independent studio

The new level of Mythic Keystone 11-15 rewards will become active the week that the Mythic difficulty of Tomb of Sargeras opens. (WarcraftDevs)

Do i have to do a +15 this Week so i get Higher ilvl loot from my Weekly Chest or will the Cap still be +10 for another week?
The M+ loot cap generally goes up when Mythic difficulty of the raid unlocks - that's how it worked for Nightmare and Nighthold. (WatcherDev)

Achievements
.why remove the FoS ''Unholy determination'' From the DK Class mount quest, for those who've done it? Thats a slap in the face.
Don't want folks to feel the need to check guides before doing quests lest they miss out on something permanently without knowing it. (WatcherDev)
The FoS had been deleted in 7.2.5 data weeks ago. "Missable" achievements in one-time content would set a dangerous precedent. (WatcherDev)

Generally it happens because you want to encourage players to engage in lots of different forms of content. If you have say 3 currencies and 10 forms of content, then what probably happens is one of the currencies can be earned in many different ways and there is a risk players will gravitate towards the most efficient. Having different currencies also lets you offer rewards on different cadences (say something with not much buying power that you reward frequently, versus something very powerful that you only offer once a week or less.)

The instincts to offer different rewards for different things makes your life a little easier for the designers, and often benefits players as well. The main downside is the growing complexity of a system, which can be overwhelming for players to keep straight.
