Mojang Announces Dedicated Version of Minecraft for Windows 10

Posted: 05 Jul 2015 09:04 PM PDT

Will be available on July 29

Minecraft Developer Mojang Officially Owned by Microsoft

When Microsoft acquired Minecraft developer Mojang for $2.5 billion last year, it came as a bolt from the blue. Further, it wasn't immediately clear what Microsoft hoped to accomplish from the deal. But the whole picture is gradually becoming clearer, and it now seems one of the key motivations may have been to get Windows 10 a killer launch app.

Mojang has announced a new version of its chart-busting game specifically for the upcoming operating system. Called the Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition, this dedicated version will be available for download in beta form from the Windows Store come July 29, 2015.

The new app will be free for anyone who already owns the existing, Java-based PC version of Minecraft, Mojang announced over the weekend at its Minecon conference. And while all others will have to pay for it, the company will only be charging $10 during the beta period.

This will be the first time that Minecraft is available from the Windows Store, something Microsoft has always been keen on. As some of you may recall, the tech giant had approached Mojang for the same as far back as 2012 but the latter refused to play ball saying Microsoft was "trying to ruin the PC as an open platform."

"Minecraft is available on Windows, Mac, Windows Phone, iOS, Android, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and PS Vita, and now, Windows 10. Not every version of Minecraft is exactly the same, but they all feature two distinct game modes – Creative and Survival – that cater to different types of players," the Stockholm-based developer studio said in a blog post Friday. "You'll recognize some Pocket Edition features in Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta, along with potpourri of cool extras."

General: How to Make Military Shooter MMOs Better

How to Make Military Shooter MMOs Better

I often wish I could enjoy realistic military shooters like World of Tanks. I have tried them before, and the closest I came to joy was when I was piloting an old aircraft over a massive battlefield... then I was shot down. Because these games are skill-based shooters, it's often the case that when you die you just stay dead; there's no room for error. The last time I played World of Tanks I grew so impatient I just logged out. I probably appeared to be the world's most sore loser.

Wizard101: Tearing Into Terror’s Hoard Card Packs

Tearing Into Terror

The latest Hoard Card Pack from Wizard101 is named the Terror's Hoard Pack, and I tore into them this week. I'm not usually a big customer of the Hoard packs; due to the vile hate the RNG gods apparently feel for me, I don't usually spend crowns on them. At first I refused to buy them until they changed the name to the Alliance Card Packs. Then I realized it was "Hoard" as in "stash," not the orcs of Azeroth, so I gave up that idea.
