PAX East 2014: Cooler Master Unveils NovaTouch TKL Mechanical Keyboard [Video]

Posted: 13 Apr 2014 07:35 PM PDT

NovaTouch TKLNew feature dampens the sound of typing

Cooler Master has unveiled the NovaTouch TKL mechanical keyboard an Pax East. Maximum PC's Jimmy Thang was able to see the new keyboard that features a silicon-based injection around the mechanical key switches.

The silicon-based injection helps absorb the friction and shock when two mechanical pieces are rubbing against each other. Sound is kept to a minimum as well  when a user is typing. As for the feel of the switch it is similar to, according to the rep, the Cherry MX Brown key switches.

One other interesting feature is that the key stems are backwards compatible with Cherry MX key caps. A major plus for keyboard enthusiasts who like to switch out the caps with their own.

The NovaTouch TKL is expected to come out sometime in the third quarter of 2014. No set price has been determined.

PC Gaming is in Rude Health, Concludes PC Gamer PAX East Panel

PAX East PC Gamer Panel

Panel discussion delves into the future of PC gaming

Our sister publication PC Gamer on Friday convened a star-studded, four-man panel at the ongoing Boston PAX East conference to discuss the future of PC gaming (see video below). The starry quartet, comprising Nvidia director of technical marketing Tom Petersen, Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey, PlanetSide 2 creative director Matt Higby and Star Citizen creator Chris Roberts, touched on a wide range of issues, including the prospects of streaming games and Microsoft's role in the future of PC gaming.

The first thing to come up for discussion was the rise of cloud-based streaming games and its implications for traditional gaming. Nvidia's Tom Petersen was of the view that the general direction of PC gaming's evolution is towards it becoming a "much more cloud-oriented experience," with both public and personal cloud game streaming gaining in popularity in the future.

The panel moderator, Evan Lahti (US editor-in-chief of PC Gamer), evoked widespread laughter from those in attendance when he jokingly asked Petersen if he was suggesting that people "won't have to buy a graphics card in the future." Meanwhile, Luckey and Roberts were equally unconvinced. Identifying latency associated with remotely rendered games as a major deal breaker, Roberts, an avowed 4K aficionado, said he as a PC gamer wants the best experience possible and that is something he doesn't see cloud gaming delivering anytime soon.

The panel then proceeded to discuss some of the obstacles to delivering better gaming experiences on the PC. According to Higby, overcoming hardware fragmentation remains one of the biggest challenges from a developer's standpoint. However, he also credited this variety — a byproduct of the immense control PC owners wield over their hardware — for making the PC a truly special gaming platform.

The PlanetSide 2 dev then broached the topic of piracy, noting that it continues to decline as digital distribution becomes more widespread. Others on the panel concurred, attributing the decline to the fact that it is now becoming more convenient to buy a game than to pirate it. Of course, the lesser the piracy, as Higby put it, "the more you can run a company off of the games you're making." Speaking of the economics of PC gaming, Petersen pointed out that it is currently estimated to be a $24 billion a year industry.

As soon as Lahiti asked the panel if they thought PC gaming would continue to be essentially Windows gaming, Luckey quipped, "Yeah, don't you remember Games for Windows Live?" This prompted a discussion on Microsoft's contribution to PC gaming.  While Petersen and Rogers lauded Redmond for some of things it is doing with DX12, the general consensus was that it needs to do a lot more to prevent gamers from abandoning Windows for Linux.

PAX East 2014: MSI Showcases GS60 Ghost Pro 3K Ultra-Thin Gaming Notebook [Video]

Posted: 13 Apr 2014 04:55 PM PDT

Sports a WQHD+ IPS Panel

Back in December, a little over a year after Linux creator Linus Torvalds famously lamented the lack of laptops with "reasonable resolution" displays, Taiwanese PC vendor MSI launched the industry's first 3K gaming laptops in the form of the GT60 2OD-261US and  2OKWS-278US. Now, the company is all set to add another 3K notebook to its lineup. Maximum PC's Jimmy Thang got up close and personal with the upcoming GS60 Ghost Pro gaming notebook at PAX East.

The 15.6-inch, 2880x1620 is the higher-res cousin of the recently launched 1080p GS60 Ghost. Apart from the WQHD+ IPS display, the Ghost Pro packs an Intel Core i7-4700HQ,  16GB DDR3L 1600MHz RAM, 1TB HDD (7200RPM), 128GB SSD, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 870M with 6GB of GDDR5 RAM.

According to the company, the ultra-thin and light laptop, which weighs less than 4 pounds, will hit the market either in late April or early May, priced somewhere around $2,000.

PAX East 2014: Logitech Showcases Its G502 Proteus Core Gaming Mouse [Video]

Logitech G502A Mouse with a 12,000DPI sensor

If you have been looking for a mouse that will let you shoot the wings off of a fly, then Logitech's G502 Proteus Core gaming mouse might be the one for you. Maximum PC's Jimmy Thang got to see the Proteus Core, which features a 12,000DPI sensor, up close and personal at PAX East.

Of course, if 12,000 DPI is too much for a user to handle then the sensor can be adjusted as low as 200. Aside from the high DPI the Proteus Core has 11 programmable buttons, comes with five 3.6g weights, the sensor can be adjusted for various surfaces, and it has a dual-mode hyper-fast scroll wheel.

The Logitech G502 Proteus Core Tunable Gaming Mouse will be out sometime this month for $79.99 in the U.S. and Europe.

So who would want to try and shoot the wings off of a fly at 500 feet with that mouse?

PAX East 2014: Hands-on with Infinite Crisis

Soundtrack by Blondie.
I don't know what Superman's problem is, man. I was expecting my confrontation with Doomsday to be something epic, something horrifying, but instead it turned into a pretty standard affair. Grab him with my enormous telescoping force arm, yank him over, slow him, then put up a shield while I beat the stuffing out of him. Seriously, I can only assume that Last Son of Krypton's death was largely a result of his desire for a vacation.

Of course, soon thereafter I fell victim to the eternal nemesis of Green Lantern -- enormous red-hued turrets surrounded by support drones. But I did all right.

MOBAs are not really my cup of tea, but superheroes are in a big way. I hadn't gotten a chance to play Infinite Crisis before now, but on the show floor at PAX East this year, I was given the chance to sit down and get a coaching session from one of the more experienced members of the team while I smashed heads. So I picked up Atomic Green Lantern and walked in fully expecting to fail left and right. To my pleasant surprise, the whole thing played out much better than I had expected, making excellent use of the license and providing a fun match all around.

Did we all have a good April Fools' Day this year? Oh hush you; this is why nobody invites you to parties. I certainly had fun, especially while running around with my giant bobble-headed characters in Guild Wars 2. Giant bobble heads are scientifically proven to make any video game 75% more enjoyable.

Reader HawkEye sent me in a disturbing number of screenshots with his large noggins, but I chose this one because it also tickled me that the animals had their heads enlarged. "'Sup Mister Ram?" HawkEye said. "Don't headbutt me, okay? Please?"

I think that creature more wanted to end its misery than contribute to yours, HawkEye, so hopefully you survived the experience. What other strange views await you in the rest of this column? Probably nothing this strange, that's for sure.

      State of Decay campaign ending
Now that PAX East is winding down, it seems as good a time as any to take stock of the news coming from this year's convention. On a personal level, I was excited to hear about the (eventual) MMOification of one of my favorite games. I also enjoyed catching up with Guns of Icarus, an indie title already holding its own and with its eyes on a larger persistent world prize.

What about you, Massively readers? Did you glean any useful nuggets from PAX East or perhaps rediscover a game you'd not thought about in a while?

Massively's on the ground in Boston during the weekend of April 11th to 13th, bringing you all the best news from PAX East 2014. Whether you're dying to know more about WildStar, Landmark, or any MMO in between, we aim to have it covered!

This week a reader named TrollsRoyce (no relation to Massively Editor-in-Chief Bree Royce, we swear) brought a new crowdfunding project called Red Blood to our collective attention. The game's IndieGoGo campaign will run through May 5th and the staff, which includes former CABAL Online and Perfect World developers, could use your help.

What exactly is Red Blood? It's a "triple-A MMORPG title that's based on the popular comic book series Red Blood," the project site explains. "Set in a post apocalyptic future, the world is a changed land where science and magic coexist and humans have been recreated by changing DNA. Four opposing countries have risen in an attempt to gain total control of the world using their new armies of genetically modified mercenaries."

Listed features include a full pet system, non-targeting combat, and an infinite number of instance dungeons. User Games and Gorilla Banana have released a trailer, and Steparu has posted an extensive review of an early build.

PAX East 2014: State of Decay eyes multiplayer, stays offline

I know we're fleeing from zombies, but would you guys like to hit Burger King on the way? Maybe... no? All right.
The ground is fairly littered with zombie games of some sort these days. That isn't meant as a mark against Undead Labs' State of Decay, but it does raise questions of focus. How do you make a zombie game more unique? According to the studio's Jeff Strain at this year's PAX East, you focus upon building at the community level rather than individual survival. While games like DayZ focus on the personal, State of Decay is much more focused on the idea of putting society as a whole back together and trying to accumulate resources and structures for survivors as a whole.

Of course, most of our readers are more interested in what comes next, specifically Class4. That's the proposed sequel to State of Decay, previously codenamed Class3; it's meant to be a full MMO according to previous statements, a game in which you can worry about rebuilding not just a local community but the world as a whole. And Undead Labs certainly isn't hurting for talent that's familiar with online games, especially with the acquisition of ArenaNet co-founder Patrick Wyatt in January. So what's happening?

PAX East 2014: Guns of Icarus Online's expanding environment

              Posted: 12 Apr 2014 04:00 PM PDT

If I don't look at you, you can't shoot me out of the sky! I think? Those are the rules, right?
PAX East taught me that I am apparently not the right person to pilot a ship in Guns of Icarus Online. In my defense, I was trying to do what my ship was designed to do. The co-op mode on display is all about delivering supplies to a final point on a map, and I was flying the fast scoutship. So I figured, why bother slowing down? Why not just jink left and right and avoid anything in my way?

As it turns out, the reasons to not do that are quite simple: The boss encounter at the cargo dropoff requires two people, and you need to actually retain control of the point rather than just wing to it at full speed. So I may have sent my ship crashing to the ground in a tumble of burning wood and broken steel. (By "may have" I of course mean "I definitely did this.")

This isn't a failing on the part of the game, just a failing on my part for trying to bull-rush through something. But it's still fun; the game gives players a variety of things to do while they're busy crewing the various stations across the ship. And it's just one place the developers are going with the game.

PAX East 2014: The Repopulation's Josh Hall on the future of the game

                Are you not entertained?
If you're looking for Kickstarter success stories, The Repopulation definitely qualifies. While the game hasn't yet been released, it's managed to run not one but two successful campaigns looking to fans for funding, and it's managed its development carefully to keep itself on track for release. The game feels like a well-managed professional affair. And it's been a bit more quiet, but that comes down largely to the focus on getting the game out of its current alpha state and into its first beta.

At this year's PAX East, I sat down to talk with Josh Hall, one of the core team members on the project, about where the game is in development and what it's heading for in the next few months. While the final alpha stage has taken slightly longer than originally planned, the team is on track for launching the first beta phase at some point over the summer, and it's eyeing further release plans.

The Game Archaeologist: The danger of expecting lightning to strike twice

It's no secret that many of the more successful Kickstarter projects over the past few years have heavily capitalized on player nostalgia, brand names, and former dev gods who are back for another round. The formula for drawing in the big bucks seems to be the following: Take something players hugely loved back in the day, dangle the concept of a sequel (spiritual or otherwise), and promise some measure of iterative improvement.

I once wrote about how we really can't go back again to recreate a particular game experience because it was usually a confluence of several factors that were related to where the industry was then and where you were then. I'm not saying that there isn't value to retro gaming, playing classic MMOs, or involving the past in future development! But there is a danger in how we as gamers become so beholden to our nostalgia that we dare lightning to strike twice -- and we're paying big bucks to see that happen.

                  But can we? Will it?

HyperX is showing off its HyperX Cloud headset at PAX East. A division of Kingston, HyperX has added quite a few interesting features to this headset which Maximum PC's Jimmy Thang was able to learn about.

For example, the headset comes with two interchangeable earcups. One set is made of leather and the other is a red, velour earcup that will change the sound profile of the device. HyperX also considered making its product an on-the-go type of headset that comes with a detachable microphone and adapters so that it can be used with a desktop, notebook, mobile phones, and Sony's PlayStation 4.

Retail price for the HyperX Cloud headset is $99.99 and is available for pre-order.

In addition to the headset, Jimmy learned a little about HyperX's Fury RAM which features automatic overclocking up to 1866MHz, requires 1.5V, and comes in 8GB or 16GB modules.

The HyperX Fury is available for purchase at $84.99 or $159.99 depending on if you are purchasing it individually or as a kit.

With 4K monitors on the shelves, it is only a matter of time before 4K laptops start to reach into the wallets of tech enthusiasts. Maximum PC's Jimmy Thang got to see an Alienware 18-inch laptop running in 4K during his Intel booth tour at Pax East.

Hardly any information was provided on the laptop's specs, though it was revealed that it has an Intel Core i7 4940MX Extreme Edition processor. The rep was also eager to point out that, while the stock processor speed is at 3.1GHz, it has been overclocked to 5.2 GHz.

To show off its abilities, Batman: Arkham Origins was being used to demo the impressive piece of hardware in 4K although Jimmy noted that the framerate was choppy.

No price or release date was provided.

During the tour Jimmy was also able to see the Aorus X7 gaming notebook. The 17.3-inch notebook features a metal chassis, dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 765M cards, and an Intel Core i7-4700HQ processor encased within a metal chassis. For storage, the notebook comes with one 1TB HDD and two 128GB SSDs

The Aorus X7 is 1.9-inches thick and weighs 6.39lbs. To keep it cool, it also has five cooling pipes, four vents, and two fans which have been designed to be at the rear, along with the GPUs, so that the consumer's palms and fingers don't get heated while using it.

Those wishing to purchase the Aorus X7 can do so for the starting price of $2,099.

PAX East 2014: Interview With Oculus VR Founder Palmer Luckey [Video]

                      Posted: 12 Apr 2014 02:59 PM PDT

Palmer Luckey 001"Facebook gives us the resources we need to develop a lot of custom hardware."

Maximum PC's Jimmy Thang caught up with Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey to talk about the Oculus Rift at this year's PAX East. A very tired Luckey talked about the potential for virtual reality technology to replace TVs and monitors and even the acquisition by Facebook

In the first segment of the interview, to put it briefly, Luckey talked about how the commoditization of VR tech would bring about a much cheaper product that could replace TVs and monitors. This could happen once the VR tech "can reach the pixel density of a real monitor, looking straight forward."

As for Facebook, Jimmy brought up a point that the social media company could provide the capital needed for the Oculus team to build its own hardware. Luckey explained that, prior to the deal, the team was "relying a lot on the scraps of the mobile phone industry." An industry, Luckey pointed out, that doesn't need high refresh rates or low latency.

He added, "Facebook gives us the resources we need to develop a lot of custom hardware that uses the same kind of base technologies of a lot of mobile hardware. But also optimize it and make it better for VR."

Luckey also said, which wasn't captured on video, that Facebook is letting the Oculus team be completely autonomous. He went on to confirm that consumers will not need to use Facebook in order to use the Oculus Rft, that there will be no Facebook branding, and that the team won't change their open SDK.

As for the consumer version of the Oculus Rift, Luckey wouldn't go into specifics but did say that it will have a refresh rate of 90Hz or more and be higher than 1080p. No price or release date for the consumer product was provided.

Watch both videos below for the full interview and tell us what you think of Luckey's opinion that VR tech could replace TVs and monitors.

                      The influx is coming.
It's been three months since PlanetSide 2 started updating once every week, if you don't count one update that was pushed back simply because it wasn't quite ready. As creative director Matt Higby put it to me at this year's PAX East, the schedule comes second to making sure that every update is the best it can be. But it's still been quite a ride, and it means that the game has kept up a schedule that's astonishingly fast.

More than a year out from launch, Higby has a lot to say about the game's development process as well as the updates it's already undergone. It's not an unmitigated success story, but it's filled with a lot of lessons and improvements. And like any MMO, the game's development is far from finished. In PlanetSide 2's case, it's a complex process that requires supporting new players, veterans, casual gamers, and professional gaming, sometimes in unconventional fashions.

PAX East 2014: Landmark's current tools and future crafts

Any pun based on the sky being the limit will sound cheesy, but eh.
We've all seen what gamers are capable of making in Minecraft. A quick search online turns up replicas of everything imaginable, sublime works of art, even inexplicable cat fountains. According to Dave Georgeson, this is exactly what led to the creation of Landmark, and by his own admission the development team owes Notch a Christmas card solely because of that. Without that limitation, Landmark wouldn't be what it is now, nor would it be developing into what it will eventually be.

At this year's PAX East, Georgeson explained to me that as much fun as Minecraft is, it lacks something crucial: a way for players to see all of these creations. Landmark, by contrast, is designed from the ground up not just to allow that sort of interaction but to actively encourage it. And that's only the beginning; the game's current status as a sort of super-Minecraft is the simplest core expression of the game's promise. By the time it's done, the whole point is to make a game that can be anything, a game for all seasons and tastes.

As a parent of toddlers, I have often wondered what games I will be playing with them when they get old enough to want to dive into MMOs (if they ever want to, that is). Considering that during this past year we've seen several kid-friendly titles shut down, I'm worried that there might not be any left in a few years.

Recall that Clone Wars Adventures, Free Realms, Pirates of the Caribbean Online, and Toontown Online have been terminated in the past 12 months and answer me this: Are kids MMOs in danger of dying out? I can take heart that KingsIsle is still going strong and that LEGO Minifigures Online is in development, but I don't see a lot of interest in studios making MMOs for the much younger set. What do you think?

So what happens when when you reach the end of WildStar?

You've got a while to think about it, obviously, the game isn't even out just yet. But it's an obvious concern. People are going to hit the level cap, and what are they going to be doing then? Staring at the walls, singing songs, perhaps clawing desperately at the metaphorical walls in the hopes of getting the next major patch somewhat sooner?

According to the WildStar panel at PAX East, the development team is hoping to launch with a fairly robust endgame no matter what you're hoping to do. The panel went through pretty much every part of the game, from items to PvP to solo story questing, all of which is intended to work together to create an environment wherein you don't run out of things to do and don't find yourself forced out of what you find fun. How well it will work remains to be seen, but there's certainly a lot on the table to start with.

Trion is certainly gung-ho about ArcheAge these days, so if you've come around to accepting that it's coming to the West this year, the studio has a lengthy stream devoted to introducing you to the game's world and the story behind it.

The stream starts out with the new CGI story trailer and is followed up with a discussion about the locations and lore of ArcheAge. "There is so much lore in this game that it is absolutely amazing," one of the devs mentioned, going on to say that XLGAMES sent Trion a 200-page summary to help the team understand it. You can check out all of the goodness after the break.

The Camelot Unchained devs have just released issue seven of their Piercing the Veil series, blog posts dedicated to answering player questions about the upcoming PvP sandbox. The highlights?
                                  • Not every tree in the game will be harvestable, but the devs are considering (not promising!) a dynamic resource ecosystem.
                                  • There will be expandable storage, but inventory management annoyances will be downplayed.
                                  • The team isn't planning NPC cities beyond the starter cities. The players will be creating that part of the world.
                                  • Bind-on-pickup gear "does not make good sense for [the] game given that all but the starter gear will be crafted, rather than dropped."
                                  • Housing will differ in format based on whether it's in the open world or safe zones, and you won't need to be a crafter to set up a basic home yourself.
                                  • Non-stat player clothing will be in the game.
                                  • The devs will most likely put limits on guild sizes.
                                  • Solo play will probably be a viable option.
You can read the complete Q&A on the official site.

                                  H1Z1
SOE CEO John Smedley's not done talking about zombie sandbox survival MMO H1Z1. Earlier this afternoon on Reddit, Smed posted a lengthy comment addressing questions about the game's map size. Rather than summarize it for you, I'll just go ahead and leave the whole thing here.

I've seen a bunch of people asking questions about the map size. Forgelight is built to handle arbitrarily sized worlds. Our plan is simple -- we're building the core of "anywhere USA". When we first open it up to users the map will be huge, but nowhere near as big as it's going to be in short order. Our map editing system allows us to quickly add massive areas. We want to make sure we clearly understand how the players are playing the game before we do that. On PlanetSide 2 we made a mistake by making multiple continents before we had a strong enough idea of what worked and what didn't. This game is different. We're doing it smarter.

When we open up the early access there will be a massive map for players to enjoy. Over time (very quickly) they'll magically just be able to keep going further than they've gone before. It's a very unique way of doing it, but we actually think this is a better way to go.

So not to worry. Zombie Apocalypse isn't going to be any fun if it's like Disneyland on Spring Break and super-crowded. We want remote... haunting... being scared when you see someone. Your first instinct needs to be to hide. If there are 20 players in your view it's not a very convincing Apocalypse.

So how many players per server? Who knows. As we add more land the number of people we can hold on a server goes way up. So we're excited. We have a ton of zombies for you to fight too. You'll be seeing hordes, oh yes you will.

                                    Hearthstone
Hearthstone is planning to revisit one of Azeroth's most notorious locations in the card game's first single-player adventure: Curse of Naxxramas.

Blizzard announced at PAX East that a new single-player mode for the game will be coming "soon" starting with a romp through the necropolis of Naxxramas. In it, players will journey through five wings of a dungeon, accumulate new cards, and fight bosses with their own unique abilities. Thirty new cards and nine class challenges will come with the adventure as well as a Naxxramas-themed game board.

Once it's released, Curse of Naxxramas will slowly unlock its wings over the course of five weeks. The first wing will be free, with the remaining four requiring purchase. It will release on all platforms simultaneously.

Massively's on the ground in Boston during the weekend of April 11th to 13th, bringing you all the best news from PAX East 2014. Whether you're dying to know more about WildStar, Landmark, or any MMO in between, we aim to have it covered!

PAX East 2014: First impressions of Warlords of Draenor

One thing I'll definitely give Blizzard, they do a great job of modeling slope-browed drooling ogres. I don't know if that is exactly a compliment.
The biggest problem that Warlords of Draenor is facing right now is one of first impressions.

This isn't a mark against World of Warcraft so much as it's the nature of the beast. I wrote a while back about how World of Warcraft can't really be back, all things considered; it's too firmly a part of the establishment to ever shake the image that it's created over the past several years. You know what it is. You know how it plays. Odds are good that you've played it.

Warlords of Draenor also features no new races, no new classes, no overhaul of the talent system, and in the build I got to play, very few of the new models. That's where the first impression problem crops up. A lot of the things that are being baked into the expansion just don't show up at first glance. That isn't to say that the first glance is bad, just that it overwhelmingly sends the message of "this is still World of Warcraft; no need for elaboration."
