Zombies, Monsters, Robots Announced

En Masse Entertainment has announced that it is working in partnership with Yingpei Games to bring a new third person shooter to fans in North America. Called Zombies, Monsters and Robots, the game will launch as a free to play title later this summer.

RPG designers often refer to the four pillars when discussing a new game or concept. Their goals often aim to improve or reinvent one or more aspect(s). SWTOR emphasized the story pillar, while Wildstar showed interest in combat. There are MMOs that aim to invent new pillars like Everquest Next, while others focus on improving a variable within a pillar. Could these pillars of game design be stifling innovation or do they merely keep the design process grounded in what works?

To avoid any chance of confusion, today's topic isn't the business model. Rather, it's the documentary of the same name that Valve released last week. Available at no charge on Steam and elsewhere, it takes us back to August of 2011 and the first ever e-sports tournament with a top prize of $1 million. Called The International, it took place during Gamescon in Germany, with 16 invited DOTA 2 teams battling it out for a total of $1.6 million.

Grimm Bros. has announced that the players have spoken and that Dragon Fin Soup has been Greenlit on Steam. In addition, the $24,000 KickStarter funding goal has been achieved. The team plans to add stretch goals for the KickStarter project that still has a full two weeks before ending.

Summer Update to Feature Ladders, Tiered Rifts

During a Q&A session prior to the midnight launch of Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls, Game Director Josh Mosqueira announced a pair of new features coming to the game this summer: Tiered Nephalem rifts and the addition of seasonal ladders. Ladders are expected to make an appearance in a couple of months, though were originally planned for release. However, according to Mosqueira, the team wanted more time to implement them correctly.
