The Rebirth of Consoles: The Age of F2P

Posted: 09 Jul 2012 02:49 PM PDT

By. M. Hauschel

"Consoles, I believe, are dead," said Firefall developer and former World of Warcraft lead, Mark Kern, CEO of Red 5 Studios. Kern is certain F2P titles are the future of gaming and will replace the current business model. Are consoles dead? Not yet, but in order for consoles to complete with F2P titles, that have been available on PCs for years, they will need to create their own titles without the price tag. It's no surprise that is the direction many console-based developers are heading towards.

Ubisoft, in a post financials conference call, suggests that plans for next-gen development are well on their way. Seven titles are planned for Wii U, and the company also noted that full game digital downloads and F2P titles will be the central focus of the next generation.

The quiet unveiling of Xbox 360's first F2P title at E3 gives more precedence to the F2P titles heading towards consoles. Ascend: New Gods, from Toy Soldiers developer Signal Studios, is developing a thirdperson, fantasy action-RPG due in 2013. It has promised persistent asynchronous multiplayer across Xbox 360 and Windows Phone.

The leader of the pack by miles is Playstation. PS3 with their upcoming title Defiance will be the world's first persistent online world shooter. Instead of a co-op with 4-8 players, Defiance supports thousands of players in a never-ending battle. Not only is Defiance a game, but also it will have a TV series on the Syfy. The game and show work together, as they change and evolve creating a unique gaming and viewing experience.

Fans of Eve Online can look forward to CCP Games' upcoming MMOFPS F2P title for the PS3, Dust 514. This will be the company's first F2P title and first console title. Taking place in the same universe as Eve Online, players will combat on the various planets found in Eve Online. Each planet will feature a unique map each divided into large districts. Players must fight to control districts that hold resources and installations.

While console publishers have been slow to the game of F2P, developing studios have been pushing the boundaries. Crytek is turning itself into a F2P only studio. Not only will all future games be F2P, but they will also be triple-A games, with estimated development budgets of $10 million to $30 million. After completing its current contracts for traditional boxed products, such as Crysis 3, Homefront 2 and Ryse, all Crytek games will be free to play, CEO Cevat Yerli told.

“I think this is a new breed of games that has to happen to change the landscape, and be the most user-friendly business model.” Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli. "We see the future of consoles as free-to-play – ideally focused on free-to-play. That’s what I want to see in the future. But unfortunately not everybody shares this vision due to many other reasons."

Gaming giant, EA, has embraced the market change to F2P as well.

“I think there’s an inevitability that happens five years from now, 10 years from now, that, let’s call it the client, to use the term, [is free.] It is no different than… it’s free to me to walk into The Gap in my local shopping mall. They don’t charge me to walk in there. I can walk into The Gap, enjoy the music, look at the jeans and what have you, but if I want to buy something I have to pay for it.”-Peter Moore, COO of Electronic Arts

E3 DUST514 06 1024x576Dust514, a new F2P PS3 FPS by the developers of Eve Online

While the criticism of cash shop systems and DLCs will be a constant debated issue among gamers. It will really boil down to how each company will handle their system. Yerli had a few words for premium services and DLC, and really shines hope on the future of cash shops.

“If you look at what kind of games are done in the packaged goods market, with DLCs and premium services and whatnot, it’s literally milking the customers to death,” Yerli said.

With development studios focusing on F2P titles and publishers giving credence to the F2P business model, this a new era of gaming, and it will be exciting to see how it plays out.

U.K. Judge Sides with Samsung in Apple Patent Dispute Samsung hasn't had much to celebrate lately in the legal arena, and the fact that a U.K. judge deemed the company's Galaxy Tab "not as cool" as Apple's iPad seems like it would only rub salt in the wound. However, it's for that very reason that Judge Colin Birss sided with Samsung, ruling that Apple's patent infringement claim, which has been successful in the U.S., is bogus.

The Secret World opens beta today for a new player record, Chronicle
Imagine that -- keeping an upcoming feature of The Secret World a secret! Yet Funcom pulled it off, announcing today via a letter from Creative Director and Senior Producer Ragnar Tornquist the aptly named new player record that will actually chronicle a player's journey through TSW.

Starting now, players active within the last four days can log into Chronicle and check out their stats on their profile page and compare themselves with players across the world using the PvP and PvE leaderboards. But that's only the beginning; Tornquist goes on to say,
"We have a lot of great features planned, and we will be integrating the service more with the game and also, hopefully, with mobile devices and social networks in the future. We are going to add more stats, more features, more leaderboards, and more user control. We might also look at giving rewards tied to your status and standing on Chronicle."
The beta is public to gather as much community feedback as possible, so jump in, check it out, and give your feedback to help shape Chronicle's future.

The Daily Grind: Should MMOs have something for everyone?

      Posted: 09 Jul 2012 06:00 AM PDT

It's weird what a creepy picture fishing lures make.
Triple-A MMOs in the days of yore always seemed to have one goal: to be everything to everyone, to provide a little something for every imaginable player and rope in as many people from as many gaming styles as possible. Even if a game wasn't explicitly a sandbox, it still tossed in crafting, dungeoning, exploration, PvP, or zones that blatantly pandered to players of different nationalities.

Nowadays we have a lot more choices, and modern games seem more willing to embrace niche design. Star Wars: The Old Republic is story, story, story. The Secret World focuses heavily on puzzle gameplay. Outside of AAA titles, the shift is even more brazen: Glitch eschews combat in favor of economy, while Darkfall features open PvP as the centerpiece of its world. It's not that these games have nothing else; it's only that they do one particular thing really well and aren't necessarily trying to hide it. They wouldn't turn down players with opposing playstyles, but they're not exactly working overtime to lure them in, either.

So what do you think? Should MMOs keep aspiring to provide something for everyone, or should they just try to do one thing well?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

EVE Evolved: Four things MMOs can learn from EVE

        EVE Evolved title image
New MMOs are released every year, and we often see them repeating the same mistakes as previous games or releasing without tried-and-tested mechanics. It just seems like common sense to learn from the years of mistakes and successes of other companies and previous titles, but it isn't always clear how to apply game mechanics or lessons from dissimilar types of game. EVE Online is as dissimilar from the typical MMO as you can get, but there are lessons to be learned from its turbulent nine-year history that can be applied to all MMO development.

EVE has helped prove that you can start small and grow rather than raking in huge launch sales and then fading away. The past year has also shown conclusively that iteration on existing features can trump big expansions. EVE's market system and single-shard server have both been commended countless times over the game's nine-year history, and yet in all that time, few games have tried to replicate those features.

In this week's EVE Evolved, I look at four lessons learned from EVE Online that could easily be applied to other MMOs.

So there's a bit of an uproar ongoing in the lands of Arborea at the moment. No, it has nothing to do with skimpy armor, Elin, or whether or not "action" combat is in fact new to MMOs.

TERA's endgame political system features something called a Vanarch, which is basically a player-elected representative. Vanarchs can impose taxes, toggle PvP on or off, and generally meddle in the affairs of other players in ways that are strictly off-limits in most themepark MMOs.

En Masse recently adjusted the system to allow Vanarchs to rise to power through guild-vs.-guild combat. In doing so, it cleared the way for mega-guilds to split in two and farm their way to political office. As you might expect, players on the outside of said guilds are none too happy about it and are allegedly receiving conflicting information from the support staff as to whether or not taking advantage of this game mechanic is considered an exploit. We'll keep you updated in case the company takes a more official position on the matter, but for now, you can head to the official forums for all the fallout.

          The Secret World
Most MMOs aren't trying to actively spook their players (unless the sight of sparkle ponies creeps you out), but The Secret World is an exception to that rule. In honor of TSW's launch week, today's One Shots is all about Funcom's new adventure-slash-puzzler MMO. Massively reader Drinkfist has gotten into the spirit of the game with today's featured screenshot. He writes in,
The Secret World just started, and the game looks amazing! This is a picture of the haunted forest in Blue Mountain. The Ghosts that inhabit it are especially rough as every 30 seconds they phase in and out of this world, changing their resistances.
Brace yourself for this and a few more TSW pics after the cut!
