Noctua, RotoSub Developing Fans With Integrated Noise-Cancelling Technology

Posted: 31 May 2012 10:17 AM PDT

Running a silent PC isn't possible if you've got a rig that generates a lot of heat -- at least, it isn't possible today. The cooling specialists at Noctua have announced that they've teamed up with a company called RotoSub to create the world's first fan with Active Noise Cancellation, and they plan on showing off a working prototype of a Noctua NF-F12 running the tech at Computex next week.

Engadget first pointed us towards the news, but Noctua has also written a press release about the joint venture. Said press release includes a short primer on the tech behind the active noise cancellation:

Active Noise Cancellation is the technique of using sound waves to reduce noise by means of an effect called phase cancellation or destructive interference.

Basically, ANC uses sound waves to cancel out other sound waves. Rotosub has developed a system that lets the fan itself emit a sound that largely cancels out the, um, actual fan sound. To us, it sounds a bit trippy (if nevertheless scientifically valid), but Noctua thinks that with the RotoSub ANC technology its NF-F12 fan will be able achieve 80 percent more airflow and 120 percent more static pressure while maintaining its current noise level. Not too shabby, that.

RotoSub hopes to have the fan-based ANC fine-tuned and ready to ship within the next year. The Rotosub website has a brief animated graphic showing how its fan technology works as compared to traditional ANC methods if you're interested.

Accidental Blog Post Says Windows 8 Release Preview Will Launch Today UPDATE: It's Here!

Posted: 31 May 2012 09:45 AM PDT

Microsoft's been promising to launch the Windows 8 Release Preview during the first week of June for a while now, but an accidentally published (and quickly retracted) Microsoft blog post says that the latest build of the company's new operating should actually hit the Internet today. Hey, tomorrow's June 1st -- that makes this the first week of the month, right?

The article, penned by Chuck Chan (aka Vice President on the Windows Development team) was only live on the Windows Hardware and Driver Developer Blog for a few minutes yesterday, but several people saw it in that time frame -- and Neowin was conscious enough to snap a quick screenshot of the slip-up. The article, post-dated for today, says that Microsoft is "very excited to make available today the Windows 8 Release Preview on the Windows Dev Center."

Check out the full text in the Neowin-provided screenshot below, and be on the lookout for that Release Preview; Neowin's sources say that it should indeed go live later this afternoon.

UPDATE: ....aaaaaand here it is! We'd love to hear your thoughts about the Release Preview, so feel free to share 'em below.

Global Wi-Fi is Intel's Ace in the Hole for Ultrabooks

Posted: 31 May 2012 07:14 AM PDT

Shakespeare's Juliet famously said "that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet," which is good news for AMD, seeing as how the Sunnyvale chip maker isn't allowed to call its own thin and light notebooks 'Ultrabooks,' a term Intel created for a new generation of laptops that follow specific design guidelines, one of them obviously being the use of Intel processors. There's nothing stopping AMD from promoting its own equivalent, but Intel may have a trump card.

According to Gigaom.com, Intel struck an agreement with Devicescape to use its connection manager technology so that Ultrabook owners can have access to Wi-Fi hotspots around the globe. Of course, Intel doesn't build its own Ultrabooks or tablets, but it does provide manufacturers with reference blueprints and Wi-Fi radios.

The licensed software works automatically when it detects a Wi-Fi hotspot, regardless of whether the system is awake or in sleep mode.

"Smart Connect will work on lid open and lid closed scenarios," Devicescape CEO David Fraser told Gigaom in an email. "So, you'll be automatically connected no matter the state of your PC."

It's not yet clear if Intel plans to charge users for the service or include it au gratis, the latter of which could be a deciding factor for users torn between an Intel-based or AMD-based laptop or tablet.

NBA 2K13 Ships to PC and Consoles October 2; Wii U at 'Later Date'

Posted: 31 May 2012 06:40 AM PDT

2K Sports said it plans to ship NBA 2K13, the twelfth installment of its NBA videogame simulation franchise and the followup to NBA 2K12, on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 in the U.S. for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PSP, Wii, and our beloved Windows PC. Noticeably absent from that list of systems is Nintendo's upcoming Wii U console, which 2K Sports promised to support at "a later date" sometime during the system's launch window.

Fans of the franchise who pre-order NBA 2K13 for the Xbox 360 or PS3 will receive bonus content in the form of a new downloadable All-Star package. The add-on will let gamers host their own NBA All-Star game along with side events like the Three Point Shootout, BBVA Rising Stars Challenge, and Slam Dunk Contest.

"The NBA All-Star package is our way saying 'thank you' to fans for their ongoing love of the NBA 2K series," said Jason Argent, vice president of marketing for 2K Sports. "This content provides a ton of depth and value to our fans, and it's just the beginning of a lot of big news about NBA 2K13."

As the to Wii U version, 2K Sports pegged the "holiday season" as a timeline for the game's release on that platform. That's a pretty strong indication that Nintendo plans to release the console this year, with an announcement likely coming at E3 in June. It's at E3 that Nintendo also plans to announce a list of launch titles.

"Guess what the initial game releases will be for th Nintendo's new home console, Wii U? Soon we'll scratch off to reveal the names!," Nintendo posted on its Wii U Facebook Timeline.

Asus, HTC Unlikely to Join Google's Chromebook Party

Posted: 31 May 2012 06:11 AM PDT

Google this week announced a second generation Chromebook model from Samsung, the Series 5 550, which dispenses with the previous generation Chromebook's Atom N570 processor and replaces it with a dual-core Celeron B867 chip sporting Sandy Bridge DNA. That's well and good if you're into Chromebooks, except that companies like Asus and HTC aren't tripping over themselves trying to launch second generation Chromebook models of their own.

Just the opposite, actually. Citing sources entrenched in the upstream supply chain, DigiTimes claims both Asus and HTC have backed off of plans to cooperate with Google in launching their own brand Chromebooks. The reason has nothing to do with Chrome OS specifically and everything to do with lackluster sales. According to DigiTimes, Samsung and Acer never managed to crack 200,000 (each) first generation Chromebook sales.

Is Chrome OS and the concept of cloud computing to blame? It's tough to say. First generation Chromebook devices didn't come out of the gate with particularly tantalizing hardware, in part because the platform relies so heavily on the cloud, but they also saw intense competition from the then-booming netbook sector. Now that netbooks are almost out of the picture, Chromebooks may have a better shot at finding buyers who aren't willing to step up a more expensive Ultrabook model.

Gigabyte Raises Ultrabook Ante with Full Carbon Fiber X11 Laptop

Posted: 31 May 2012 05:55 AM PDT

Someone must have handed Gigabyte the gauntlet, which the Taiwanese hardware manufacturer plans to throw down in the Ultrabook category with a new thin and light model constructed entirely of carbon fiber. Gigabyte's upcoming X11 laptop is supposedly the lightest Ultrabook this planet has ever seen, barely budging the scale at 975g (about 2.1 pounds) and measuring 0.3cm (about 0.12 inches) at its thinnest point.

Thin and light as it is, the X11 still rocks an 11.6-inch LED display with a 1366x768 resolution, 3rd Generation Intel Core processor options (Ivy Bridge), 4GB of DDR3 memory, Intel HD 4000 graphics, 128GB solid state drive, USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports (one each), a combo audio jack, microSD card slot, GbE LAN, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, 1.3MP webcam, and a Windows 7 (Home Premium or Professional). Prices will range from $1,000 to $1,300 when the X11 starts shipping in July.

Also on the mobile front, Gigabyte announced a pair of 14-inch laptops, the U2442 and U2440, both of which cross Ivy Bridge with Nvidia's mobile Kepler in tow. These models will ship in June starting at $700.

Heroes in the Sky Launches Occupational War

Posted: 31 May 2012 12:18 PM PDT

GamesCampus has launched a new battleground for Heroes in the Sky titled Occupational War.  The battleground is the largest yet in the game, challenging players to conquer parts of the map and defend them from their enemies.

In a special event, European gamers will be challenging American gamers on the map, to see who will prevail.  From 5/31 to 6/3, at three times during the day, these battles will be fought.  When specific kills, assists, and/or deaths are reached by an individual, they will receive a random item.  Since no aircraft may be above level 90, players will be able to access a gear lab on the U.S. servers to tune their planes to level 90 standards.

GamesCampus also publishes Tank Ace and Scarlet Legacy.

HEROES IN THE SKY FIGHTS AN OCCUPATIONAL WAR

Europe Competes Against The U.S.A. In The Biggest Battle Yet!

Sunnyvale, Calif. (May 31, 2012) – Leading online game publisher, GamesCampus.com (www.GamesCampus.com), announced today the newest battleground for their Massively Multiplayer Online Third Person Shooter (MMOTPS) Heroes in the Sky, Occupational War! Combining together a high intensity PVE story with fast paced PVP, Heroes in the Sky challenges players to become top Ace in a World War II setting. Pilots should fly straight over and register for their account at http://his.gamescampus.com/

Occupational War is the biggest battlefield that Heroes in the Sky offers to players. Pitting Allies against Axis, players can compete and acquire territories within the map, and then must defend them against the hordes of the enemy. GamesCampus will be presenting a global twist to the map during the Occupational War Event, which pits the world’s best against each other regardless of faction, but by region!

Players will be able to register by opting into the Occupational War via the character screen. European players will be suiting up against players from the U.S.A. to determine once and for all which region has the most firepower. Special events for the worldwide Occupational War take place on the following days and at the following times, 5/31 to 6/3:

  1. 10:00-12:00 PST / 19:00-21:00 CEST
  2. 15:00-17:00 PST / 00:00-02:00 CEST
  3. 22:00-00:00 PST / 8:00-10:00 CEST

Rewards will be based on the number of kills/assists/deaths each player acquires; 3 kills, 6 assists or 9 deaths. A player’s recorded kill will grant them an item from a random set, including Techs, specialty-items and more. The winners’ side, whether it is Europe or U.S.A., will have a server-wide EXP/GEM/Drop Rate Event after the tallies have been finalized. The participants on the losing service will be rewarded with similar in-game and cash items, in reduced amounts.

While all pilots are welcome to join into the event, to ensure the most even playing field, items and aircrafts must be below level 90 to qualify, including premium aircrafts. To help players get geared up, a Gear Lab event will run on the U.S. servers that allow players to create, strengthen, and refine their pre-90 gear!

Heroes in the Sky is an intense airborne MMOTPS that combines high impact PVE and fast paced PVP as it chronicles the events from the beginning to the end of World War II. PVP combat is taken to a new level as players must not only worry about the basic dangers from the front, behind, and sides, but also from above and below. New Eagerly Anticipated Browser-Based MMORTS, Dragon Crusade, Enters Closed Beta

Fantasy-Themed Strategy Game joins Aeria Games' Stable of Free-to-Play Titles

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – May 31, 2012 – Endless combat, construction, and competition await, as Aeria Games, a leading global publisher of free-to-play online games, announced today the massively multiplayer online (MMO) strategy game Dragon Crusade has begun closed beta testing. The game will allow players to govern their civilization's rise to prominence while reducing rival kingdoms to dust with hordes of monstrous minions—all from within the ease and comfort of their own web browsers.

Dragon Crusade allows players to craft their own tales of the rise and fall of empires in an absorbing medieval world. An ever-evolving landscape forces players to adapt and grow if they want to stay ahead of the competition, building and maintaining not just one, but multiple cities forming extensive kingdoms—as well as the powerful armies necessary to protect them.

Dragon Crusade also offers an incredible level of customization rarely seen in browser games. Six playable races—from Dark Elves to sturdy Dwarves to the necromantic Azraen—make for very different gaming experiences through their unique buildings, troops, and abilities. In addition, highly customizable heroes level up through battle, allowing players to distribute their stat points, as well as equip them with better gear. A hero's skills can be boosted even further with the addition of mounts and pets.

Several features encourage both cooperation and competition between players. They can form alliances with each other to take on the rest of the world as a united front, sharing key resources, technology, and buildings. When in a fighting mood, players can also pit heroes against each other in gladiatorial arena matches or send their heroes into a dungeon to search out spoils and glory.

Many fun events are planned for the closed beta to bestow prestigious awards like unique items and custom gear upon the most dedicated players. These events include challenges to produce the most resources, obtain the strongest equipment, and form one of the top five alliances. Even more prizes will be offered through surprise challenges that change daily!

Dragon Crusade is entirely browser-based and does not require a download, and like all Aeria Games titles, it is free-to-play. Players can register for the closed beta today at http://dragoncrusade.aeriagames.com.
