DOFUS, the free-to-play fantasy MMO from Ankama, is embarking on a somewhat novel approach to new zone content. The game's newest map area is an archipelago called Vulkania, and it's only available to players during the months of July and August.

The isle features varying terrain including white sand beaches, tropical jungles, craters, and various caverns, not to mention strange wildlife. Among the new monster species are the sauroshell family and a pet/mount called a madreggon. According to an Ankama press release, "Vulkania is also home to Grozilla and Grasmera, two terrors who are back to shake the World of Twelve once more!"

The release also provides a concise summary of what we can expect from Vulkania aside from its monsters, and amenities include 40 new quests, 13 new equipment items, and 3 new titles. Check out the official DOFUS website for more.

ASTA showing off its CryEngine3 visuals at Gamescom

If you were fortunate enough to attend this year's GDC, it's possible you caught a glimpse of ASTA, the new fantasy MMO from NHN. The title, formerly known as Project E:st, is powered by the CryEngine3 and boasts some of the more impressive visuals in the MMO space.

Assuming you can make it to Cologne, Germany, for this year's Gamescom (August 17th through the 21st), you'll get another opportunity to see ASTA in action since NHN will be offering visitors "a first look at the captivating world [...] as well as the opportunity to chat with the developers and learn more about character development, guild evolution, competitive play, and many other features," according to a new press release.

ASTA is being developed by Polygon Games (which includes a core group of designers who previously worked on Rohan: Blood Feud), and it takes place in a world inspired by Asian myth. Gameplay elements include realm vs. realm, PvE questing, raids, and crafting.

The Secret World's Tornquist talks truth, pain, and non-combat gaming

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 10:00 AM PDT

Rock, Paper Shotgun is back with part two of its interview with The Secret World's Ragnar Tornquist. Part one debuted yesterday and detailed a bit of the history behind the game's development as well as blurbs about factions, puzzles, and ARG thingamajigs.

Today's installment talks about everything from Tornquist's recurring real world/hidden world motifs, to the endings of Lost and Dreamfall, to unfulfilled fan expectations. As you might expect, the interview errs heavily on the side of the philosophical rather than delving into gameplay specifics.

Everything from the nature of truth, to Funcom's Secret World agenda, to the reticence of the gaming industry to evolve beyond kill-everything-that-moves is up for discussion. On this last point, Tornquist hints at the challenges inherent in designing non-combat gaming experiences. "It's difficult. You can't sacrifice fun. But then of course the idea of fun is ambiguous. Does it always have to be fun? Can't it be painful too?"

CCP partners with Nexon to release EVE Online and DUST 514 in Japan

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 09:00 AM PDT

The Japanese games market can be difficult for western companies to break into, with accurate client localisation and translation acting as a huge potential roadblock. In an unexpected press release today, EVE Online developer CCP Games announced a strategic partnership with Japan-based MMO publisher Nexon to bring both EVE Online and DUST 514 to the Japanese market. EVE is currently available in English, German and Russian, and Japanese players have so far found considerable difficulty in playing the game.

Unlike EVE's Chinese release, the Japanese client will connect to the main Tranquility game server. Nexon will add the game to its portal website and use its own billing system for Japanese subscribers. As we've seen with EVE's sizeable Russian playerbase, it's likely that entire alliances and communities will build up within the game once it hits the shelves in Japan. While the language barrier between players from different parts of the world can limit social interaction, it turns out that everyone understands the language of smashing internet spaceships to bits with lasers. The PC release of EVE Online in Japan will appear later this year, and will be followed by a localised release of DUST 514 in 2012.

RuneScape's Clan Citadels puts game design in the hands of players

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 08:00 AM PDT

Last week, we brought you the news that browser-based fantasy MMO RuneScape would be introducing clan citadels in its next expansion. We heard that these customisable castles in the sky would feature a tier-based progression system, but until now we didn't know what the actual castles would look like or if any kind of new gameplay would come with them. Jagex has just revealed that the expansion's gameplay element is potentially as huge and revolutionary as their massive Dungeons of Daemonheim update.

The new floating castles act as meeting places for clans, and will contain exclusive skill-training areas for woodcutting, mining and other skills. Working on the clan's skill plots will add resources to upgrade the castle and pay for its upkeep, but may provide slightly less experience gain than traditional skill-training areas.

Customisable clan battlefields provide a sandbox map editor tool, letting clans design and build their own battlegrounds and minigames. Players will be able to design their own arenas and gameplay for the first time in RuneScape's ten year history, creating anything from capture the flag style matches and monster hunts to basic clan versus clan PvP battles. Perhaps the most exciting part of the feature is the ability for clan members to invite other players to try their games and challenge rival clans to competitive battleground matches. The expansion launches on 26th July.

Skip past the cut to watch the official clan citadel trailer and get a sneak peek at the castle's in-game visuals.

Ask Massively: Canada Day edition

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 07:00 AM PDT

Yes, Canada Day was last week. But a couple of our readers expressed some displeasure about the fact that America's birthday gets observances in MMOs while Canada's birthday doesn't. And you know what? That does seem unfair. So let's hear it for Canada! I've had the good fortune to meet a number of wonderful Canadian players in various MMOs over the years, and I can say without reservation that the nation deserves more recognition beyond the ubiquitous jokes about its relationship to America. So hooray for Canada, and happy belated birthday to our northern neighbors!

Seriously, let's hope BioWare gives us a Star Wars: The Old Republic holiday for Canada Day. I would be thrilled.

As you've probably guessed, this week's edition of Ask Massively is just a wee bit subjective, and considering that our questions tackle the issues of humans in game stories and microtransactions in MMOs, we really saw no way around it. Got a question of your own for a future installment of the column? Mail it to ask@massively.com, or leave it in the comments below.

The Daily Grind: Do you have departed friends from old games?

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 06:00 AM PDT

Friends leave. It's a sad reality, but it's still a reality, and it's hard to maintain a friendship when your only real common interest is a game that you no longer play together. Even though your friend might have left City of Heroes or Warhammer Online behind many years ago, you still think about your friendship and wonder about what the other person is up to -- but you were friends in the game and not elsewhere. There's no way to know, and nothing that can be done beyond sighing wistfully at the in-game horizon and hoping that your old buddy is still having fun.

Play a game for long enough, and you'll no doubt find old friends that move on even while some stick around. So what friends do you remember from the games of yore that you no longer play alongside? Were they former real-life friends that gradually became game friends until you lost touch, or are they just people you met while playing EverQuest II? What sort of memories do you have about the departed, and have you ever managed to reconnect with an in-game friend you thought was gone for good?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Final Fantasy XIV outlines changes to the enmity systems

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 08:00 PM PDT

Enmity, hate, threat, or whatever term you prefer is a big part of combat in any MMO. It's the principle around which the concept of a tank is based, the idea that you can have one person responsible for drawing the attention of monsters. And in Final Fantasy XIV, the process of holding that enmity was complex, lacked an indicator, and was generally difficult to gauge. As part of patch 1.18's major battle system overhaul, the functions of enmity are being changed, streamlined, and improved to make tanking more straightforward for all players.

Monsters will be gaining a new indicator for enmity, allowing each player to effectively judge whether or not to hold back on attacking based on enmity. Similarly, the process of accumulating, holding, and dispelling enmity will be significantly streamlined. Final Fantasy XIV players fond of taking on the tanking role will want to take a look at the breakdown, which promises to make threat that much easier to hold on to.

Funcom reveals new Secret World cinematic

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 07:00 PM PDT

Funcom's had a busy fortnight, what with Age of Conan's content extravaganza and a few location reveals for The Secret World. Tonight the Norwegian development firm has taken the wraps off another spiffy teaser, this time in the form of a new cinematic for its upcoming conspiracy-horror MMORPG.

The two-minute trailer starts off innocently enough, as a forlorn-looking barfly fond of cigarettes and strange tricks with pocket change makes his way from a bar stool to the nearest bathroom. It only gets weirder from there, and before the clip's running time is up, we've seen a sackcloth man-creature having trouble with a urinal, lots of icky tentacles, and some sort of multi-eyed horror from the depths of hell.

None of this phases our ice-cold protagonist of course, and he even takes the time to zip his fly while disposing of the baddie in fine supernatural style. See for yourself after the cut, or head to GameTrailers.

Powersets are spreading the love in City of Heroes

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 04:30 PM PDT

With new powersets on deck for Issue 21 of City of Heroes, you might have reasonably assumed that there wouldn't be anything more to see in the powers department. But as the newest issue of the Intrepid Informer makes clear, you won't just have brand-new powers to kick around when City of Heroes Freedom launches. You'll also be able to play around with powers that are new to each archetype, with the newest round of powerset proliferation hitting the game at the same time.

Aside from Dominators, every archetype is getting at least one new power set, ranging from the melee options that were always odd omissions (such as War Mace for Scrappers and Broad Sword for Brutes and Tankers) to sets that had previously been confined to a single archetype (Ice Armor for Stalkers, Poison for Corruptors). City of Heroes players looking to play a new flavor of an old favorite should take a look at the full rundown of upcoming proliferations, as it promises a lot of new options even without the new stuff.

Free for All: EVE drama due to bolster waning TV soap schedule

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 04:00 PM PDT

Much was said recently about the latest EVE Online "drama." If you've talked and written about MMORPGs as long as I have, you'd be very rich if you were paid a nickel every time you heard the word. Drama, when applied to the world of MMOs, ends up feeling like a funeral for an insect... more than a little dramatic. As someone who has played EVE a bit off and on (I have a six-year-old account, but only a 10,000,000-SP character), I was more than a little surprised at the response -- but not really surprised.

In fact, the recent drama -- hell, any EVE drama -- comes off as rather humorous. The same thing happened when World of Warcraft began selling the infamous sparklepony or when Lord of the Rings Online decided to sell a special skeleton steed in its cash shop (I was lucky enough to get one during the holiday event). Players screamed that they would be canceling, that they would protest in some form or another, and that they would never buy a product from the developer, go anywhere near anyone who shared the same name as any of the developers, or even utter the name of their poor, lost avatars again. Yet, here we are.

Every time something like this happens, it happens for a few distinct reasons. Click past the cut and I'll fill you in.

Age of Conan's hardcore PvP ruleset releasing tomorrow

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 03:30 PM PDT

What's a good encore for the week following a huge, game-altering freemium revamp? How about a new and much-anticipated server ruleset. Yep, Funcom is gearing up to release Age of Conan's hardcore Blood and Glory PvP shards tomorrow according to an update on the official boards.

The American and European servers are scheduled to receive four hours of maintenance, after which time two new shards, Deathwish (US) and Rage (EU), will be brought online. These aren't just any servers, either. The Blood and Glory ruleset features free-for-all PvP throughout the game world, corpse-looting, and one character per account.

Age of Conan's PvP community has been very vocal in its disdain for the game's turn towards the PvE side of the MMO street in recent years, and the new ruleset will finally give the die-hards an opportunity to put their money where their mouth is. For more on the ruleset, check out our exclusive interview with Funcom's Craig Morrison as well as our Blood & Glory opinion piece.

Wizard101 to hit 20 million user mark this week

It's a magical occasion for KingsIsle Entertainment, as it announces that its popular MMORPG Wizard101 will reach 20 million registered users this week. The press release is careful to note that the 20 million does not include the European editions of the game.

Wizard101, for the uninitiated, is a family-focused MMORPG that puts players in the robes and hats of elemental wizards. Players then engage in tactical combat using decks of magic spells while working together to find loot, complete quests, and learn more magic. Battlestar Galactica Online sheds "beta" tag

Bigpoint announced today that its game Battlestar Galactica Online has dropped its "beta" tag and is now wearing the big-boy pants of a fully launched game. Since its open beta release less than five months ago, the game has garnered over three million registered users, so it's probably safe to say the game is indeed ready to move out of beta.

What does this mean for the future of the game? Well, it's simple really: It means that the BSGO team is shifting its focus away from optimization and patches and will instead be zeroing in on adding new content and features to the game. For more information about Battlestar Galactica Online, or to sign up to give the game a go for yourself, head on over to the official site.

One Shots: Both cute and functional -- it's a win-win

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 02:00 PM PDT

Aion pets are up for today's One Shots. Massively reader Teranu has been playing Aion with an extra helping of cute lately:
The Desert Naeda is quite possibly my favorite pet of all time. All they did was take an already-adorable little fox and crank all its cuteness values up to 11, and it works beautifully.

Those huge ears aren't just for show, either - they're what lets it function as a warning pet, letting me know when Asmodian interlopers are near. I also like the pet for the prestige factor - they can only be attained by turning in a large quantity of Radiant Ops tokens, which themselves are only attainable through PvP dailies and weeklies (unless you exchange other tokens for them at a cost).

Unfortunately, they decided to reduce the price of the pet after I attained it, making it much less of an accomplishment. Still, I've been able to admire its utterly adorable cuteness for months, making it worth the investment.
Now it's your turn! Large or small, deadly or purely decorative, we want to see your favorite pet companion. Just let us know your name, the name of the game, and a little about your pet and how you acquired it. Send it all to oneshots@massively.com and we'll feature you and your pet on One Shots this week.

Star Legends launches beta on Verizon's V CAST

If you're a mobile gamer who also happens to be a Verizon user, it seems that you're in luck. Spacetime Studios -- maker of the immensely popular Pocket Legends -- announced today that its new mobile MMO, Star Legends: The Blackstar Chronicles has begun beta testing exclusively on Verizon's V CAST. Fear not, because we have a spiffy trailer to help players get their space-legs.

The game takes place in the far-off 41st century, and puts players in the space-faring shoes of one of three classes: Commando, Engineer, or Operative. Players then "quest for adventure, fame and fortune," but it won't be simple, as "players must battle harsh, alien environments, monstrous, unthinking aliens, and the greed and ambition of their rivals." Star Legends is free-to-play with microtransactions. If it sounds like your idea of a good time -- and if you have an Android phone on the Verizon network -- you can give the game a go on Verizon's V CAST, or check out more information at the official site. And don't forget to check out the trailer past the cut!

Klurgind may not be the smartest ork in Warhammer Online nor the strongest one, but he's certainly a popular greenskin. What is it about him? That beady, penetrating stare? The way he eulogizes Squig Herders on the fields of Nordland? His sharply alluring green-blue skin and bright orange tattoos? Or just the fact that everyone knew he was my character, thus ensuring that every regular reader went out of the way to shower him with praise, advice, and adulation?

I don't know. But I do know that special thanks go out to Tsavonglah for some excellent in-game advice and a veritable wall of information in the comments, Daswagga for a large pile of Strength talismans, and the many people who gave me a wave or cheer for bring a touch of Massively WAAAAGH to the game. A Mild-Mannered Reporter: Nine misconceptions about Freedom

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 12:30 PM PDT

So one of the interesting elements of having written up the initial column and post on the newest City of Heroes change is that I didn't have time to really see what the community reaction would be. I knew that I was excited about City of Heroes Freedom, and I knew that there was a lot to hope for, but the only guess I could make was that people would crow about the game's impending demise rather than focusing on the many positives coming from the switch to a hybrid model.

It's been two weeks now, and while I won't claim to have my finger on the pulse of the community (who the heck is Leonardo Leonardo?), I do think I've gotten a general idea of the biggest complaints about the upcoming change. Some of them are entirely accurate -- yes, you will have free players on your server, and yes, that will include the already-burgeoning Virtue. But other complaints are a bit inaccurate or stem from misunderstandings, so today I want to talk about the nine points that seem most frequently misunderstood about Freedom.

Funcom's Ragnar Tørnquist, project lead of the upcoming The Secret World, sat down with John Walker over at Rock, Paper, Shotgun to chat about everything TSW. The interview is delightfully in-depth, and is actually only the first part of the entire interview, so TSW fans have something to look forward to as well.

In part one, Mr. Walker talks with Tørnquist about the history of The Secret World and how it arrived at the point it's at today. They also spend a bit of time discussing the game's three factions -- particularly the enigmatic Dragons -- and their potential motivations and interactions. And lastly, of course, they talk about the game's ARG-esque puzzles, which blur the line between game and reality for a more immersive experience. For the whole first part of the interview (which is really a must-read for fans of TSW), head on over to Rock, Paper, Shotgun.

Enter at Your Own Rift: Creature comforts

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 11:30 AM PDT

I've got a problem that nine interventions and three bouts of electroshock therapy have yet to cure: I'm hopelessly addicted to collecting non-combat pets (aka vanity pets) in MMOs. I don't know why that is, exactly, although I've always had a fondness for "fluffy" elements on online games. In my opinion, a lot of what we work for in MMOs is cosmetic anyway -- a really good-looking set of armor, a top-of-the-line mount -- with some piddly stats occasionally making a cameo.

(Comment bait? Oh yes, I'm evil that way!)

While adding nothing to my combat power nor helping me advance in the game, pets still hold purpose. They are fun to display, particularly if you have rare critters that others haven't seen, and they can give you a feeling of virtual companionship during your journeys. Unlike many collection items, pets have a use -- you can actually do something with them instead of tucking them away where they'll sit collecting pixelated dust.

I was pretty pleased to discover that RIFT wasn't going to leave us high and dry when it came to non-combat pets, although it's interesting that they're somewhat harder to come by than in, say, World of Warcraft. If you're like I am, you're scouring the game looking to expand your menagerie, so it might be frustrating to be well on your way to 50 with only a paltry pair of pets to your name. Where is everyone getting all of these? How can I snag a few more?

Join me after the jump as we examine six ways to collect crazy critters!

Former Sony Employee Sues Nintendo Over 3DS Screen Tech

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 06:30 PM PDT

3DS

The 3DS's must unique feature -- its glasses-free 3D display -- has gotten Nintendo sued. Tomita Technologies alleges in a lawsuit filed in a New York district court last month that Nintendo is violating a patent, number 7,417,664, which was filed for in 2003 by Seijiro Tomita and issued in August 2008.

Tomita is described in the complaint as an "accomplished scientist and engineer" who worked at Sony for nearly 30 years before retiring in 2002. He began filing for patents after leaving the company, dozens of which now exist that list him as the inventor or co-inventor.

"Mr. Tomita has done substantial research and development in the area of stereoscopic display technology. Among other things, Mr. Tomita invented and developed technology relating to displaying stereoscopic (3-D) images on-screen for viewing with the naked eye, i.e., without utilizing glasses or other devices," the lawsuit states. "The '664 patent asserted in this action covers 3-D technology invented and developed by Mr. Tomita." It also says the Japan Patent Office has granted him a similar patent to the one in question.

Poor Wii Sales This Holiday Would be a "Grave Concern"

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 05:59 PM PDT

Wii

Wii sales have slowed considerably over the past year, and in the United States, the Xbox 360 has been the best-selling console for months. Wii U's announcement last month isn't going to help sales much at all; it sold about 236,000 units in the U.S. during May, according to the NPD Group, following Nintendo's confirmation that a new system is coming in 2012.

Speaking about the subject following Wii U's reveal last month, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata told the San Jose Mercury News, "Well, of course, no single entertainment device can enjoy eternal popularity. And when it comes to Wii, we have to understand that any potential sales are going to be affected by the seasonalities much more than before.

"If we cannot sell as well as we expect to during the holiday sales season, it's going to be a grave concern for us."

Torchlight Surpasses One Million Units Sold

Torchlight

The first game released by indie developer Runic Games, Torchlight, has sold over one million units, the company announced today. That figure takes into account sales across all platforms (PC, Mac, and Xbox Live Arcade) since its launch in October 2009 on PC.

It's an impressive figure for an indie game, particularly a Diablo-style action-RPG devoid of any multiplayer component.

"We're very excited to share Torchlight's success with our fans and supporters. It's been a great ride so far and we can't wait to give everyone more of what they want in Torchlight II," said Runic Games President Travis Baldree. "It isn't every day you sell a million games. We're grateful to be here."

EA's Desire to Stay in Touch Keeping Certain Games Off Steam

Battlefield 3

Crysis 2 was quietly pulled from Steam last month. Given the timing, it looked as if EA was looking to secure more exclusives for its rebranded EA Store, Origin. But the game continued to be sold at other digital game distributors, and other EA titles remained on Steam. EA explained it "was not an EA decision or the result of any action by EA" and that it was in fact due to "business terms" set by Steam.

Another new EA game, Alice: Madness Returns, wasn't available at launch on Steam but was made available on there soon after. EA's biggest title of the year, Battlefield 3, however, remains unavailable. Meanwhile, both Direct2Drive and GamersGate have it up for pre-order.

Origin boss David DeMartini published a blog today emphasizing that EA "respect[s] consumer choice." An official policy on third-party digital game distributors has been posted today, said to be in response to the initial confusion that it was responsible for Crysis 2 being pulled -- but more likely to reinforce that Steam has decided not to sell it and other games.

Deus Ex Leakers Targeted by Lawsuit

Deus Ex Human Revolution

Prior to E3, an unfinished version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution was leaked onto the Internet. With the game not coming out until August, what was made available was a preview build intended only for the media. In response, it's come to light that Square Enix is suing fifteen unidentified individuals.

The lawsuit (PDF) was filed on June 22 in Washington. The reason for that is the leak happened through Steam, the digital distribution service owned by Bellevue, Washington-based Valve.

Among those who were allowed to access the preview build was someone working for Italian magazine Giochi per il Mio Computer. This individual's Steam account was logged into on May 29 -- without permission -- by "one or more" of the 15 defendants from an IP address that doesn't belong to the magazine. The game files were then copied (again, by one or more people) and distributed on BitTorrent. From there, it ended up being downloaded and distributed across the Internet.

Vidrhythm in Development at Harmonix

Dance Central 2

A new trademark filing is the first sign of the next project to come from Harmonix.

As discovered by Siliconera, the U.S. trademark filing is for something called Vidrhythm. No further information is provided, but Harmonix did confirm the news with Joystiq, saying, "Nothing to add at this time, other than to confirm that it is a project we're working on."

Harmonix's focus in recent years has been on Rock Band and Dance Central. It was the original developer of the Guitar Hero franchise, and before that it created cult classics like Frequency and Amplitude.

3DS's First Final Fantasy is... a Rhythm Game

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 11:27 AM PDT

Final Fantasy

The first Final Fantasy game for 3DS is in the works, but it's not an RPG, as one would expect. It will instead take the form of a rhythm game.

As revealed in this week's issue of Japanese publication Jump, the game is called Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. It's classified as a "theater rhythm action" game (hence the name), according to a translation by Andriasang, and will include much of what you'd expect to see in a FF game -- exploring dungeons, visiting towns, battling enemies -- except you'll interact with the game through tapping and holding notes. Music is pulled from previous Final Fantasy games, as are characters, such as Cloud.

If any of this sound vaguely familiar, you might remember the April Fools' joke pulled off way back in 2001 by the Gaming Intelligence Agency.

PSN Pass is Real, Required to Play Resistance 3 Online

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 10:52 AM PDT

Resistance 3

Confirming speculation from yesterday after a PS3 bundle image showed its logo, Sony has announced that Resistance 3 will ship with something called PSN Pass. It's essentially Sony's version of the online pass we've seen other publishers use for their games in the past. It'll be "game-specific" and included with first-party PS3 games that have "online capabilities."

"We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering, and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities," a spokesperson said in statement sent to IGN. "This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title.

"This is an important initiative as it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio."

"What the hell did they do to Link?"

I was in eighth grade when Nintendo unveiled the now-legendary first look at what would become The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. It was Space World, 2001, and this was not the Zelda we expected after seeing the "next-gen" tech demo re-imagining of Link and Ganondorf crossing swords released the year before. This new Link was winking. Grainy video and screenshots leaked from the event revealed a goofy, cartoony Link who embodied creator Shigeru Miyamoto's desire to make a game that captured a childlike sense of adventure. To immature eighth graders, eager for gritty grown-up content and cutting-edge graphics, it was nothing short of a betrayal.

Dungeon & Fighter - Big update coming

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 05:06 AM PDT

So, you have probably heard about Dungeon & Fighter (Korea) having a big update next week (also known as Dungeon Fighter Online in North America). As usual with Nexon's games, there will be a huge amount of new content, including new maps, NPCs, quests, items, changes to UI and more. The star of the show will no doubt be the new scythe-wielding Avenger class, which bears a striking resemblance to a currently existing class...

There is currently still no English server other than the heavily IP-blocked one in North America. Why is that so, only Nexon knows. It baffles me since the game has been out for quite some time. In the meanwhile, just ogle at the trailers in this post!

Ragnarok II - 2nd Closed Beta starts next week

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 04:30 AM PDT

Personally, I have not seen an online game having its sequel delayed so long after being announced. When Ragnarok II was first revealed to be in development, I think it was way back in 2006. Since then, the game was delayed several times and the project almost got canned. Ragnarok II eventually went into Closed Beta, but the game was totally out of sync with the gamers and went back to the drawing board, re-emerging as Ragnarok II: Legend of the Second to commemorate its rebirth.

Character models from 2007. The Ellr race was removed in Legend of the Second.
The first Closed Beta wasn't that successful even to me who played for a few minutes. While my small preview got canned by readers, the gamers in Korea apparently shared my views, with the game going back into development for almost another 6 months before this announcement. Closed Beta 2 will begin on 13th July, with all members of GnJoy (Gravity's Korean MMO portal) able to play in it. Will the game be a better one? I hope it will. ARA Online - Not aiming to be DNF

Posted: 06 Jul 2011 09:00 AM PDT

You probably missed my previous post about this upcoming new action online game from Korea, but fret not, for I am here to refresh your memories! The maiden project of developer Aquarius Entertainment, ARA Online is a 3D action side-scroller which the media has touted as the 3D version of Nexon's Dungeon Fighter (DnF) Online. In this interview by the foreign media, the developers share their thoughts on developing the game and why it is not just DnF in 3D mode.

Q: Please introduce more about Aquarius Entertainment to us.

A: Aquarius Entertainment is a company which focuses on its games' development through advanced technical knowledge. With years of experience and skills on hand,we are confident to bring content wanted by the players and to make them happy when playing our games.

Q: ARA Online has been in development for over 2years. What was the biggest challenge faced so far?

A: It should be finding the right developers for the game. A game needs to have its own unique selling points, and ARA Online should not just "copy" what DNF already has. If that happens, players will not bother about the game. We will be focusing on content for combat experience and action displays in ARA Online.

Q: From a developer's point of view, is DNF a game impossible to exceed in the genre?

A: DNF has been around for quite some time, it will be too early to compare anything now. Players will have to try the games out for themselves before any judgement can be made, and we are confident about the combat content ARA Online has to offer.

Q: As an online game which focus primarily on its action combat, how will this be presented to players?

A: We will present this through 4 elements: animation effects, sound effects, screenplay effects and interaction between objects when attacking. Screenplay effects are currently handed by another company we hired, but our own staff will be consolidating all effects at the end. The overall experience will be very grand.

Q: What is the current development status for ARA Online?

A: The game is still in development, but there is enough content for a Closed Beta phase currently. We are actually working more on Open Beta content right now. We will be planning the release schedule soon, as well as finding the appropriate partners to publish the game.

Q: Are there any plans for overseas servers?

A: We are currently in talks over the European server, but it will take some time before details are finalized. We are also looking for a publisher in the South East Asia (SEA) region.
