Acer Aspire Switch 10 is a Detachable Hybrid with Four Modes of Operation

Posted: 29 Apr 2014 09:29 AM PDT

Acer Aspire Switch 10A flexible hybrid with a detachable display

Acer on Tuesday unveiled what it's calling a 2-in-1 Aspire Swtich 10. The 2-in-1 designation is based on the Aspire Switch 10's ability to function as a laptop or a tablet, though that's a bit of an undersell here. Acer could have marketed the device as a 4-in-1 if choosing to focus on its four modes or orientation, which include the traditional laptop setup, tablet mode, display mode, and tent mode.

Comparison's to Lenovo's Yoga line are probably inevitable, but what's different here is that you're able to completely detach the display from the keyboard dock. The "Acer Snap Hinge" features a magnetic detachable design for latch-free docking and two hooks to connect the tablet to the keyboard, plus a two-way connector to hold the tablet for two-sided viewing.

Acer claims the Aspire Switch 10 is one of the thinnest 2-in-1 devices available, measuring less than 8.9mm (0.35 inches) thin in tablet mode and 20.2mm (0.44 inches) with the keyboard dock, and weighing 0.59kg (1.29 pounds) and 1.73kg (2.58 pounds) in tablet and keyboard modes, respectively.

Acer Aspire Switch 10 Setups

The Aspire Switch 10 features a 10.1-inch IPS display with a 1366x768 resolution, Intel Atom (Bay Trail T) quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, up to 64GB of storage, Windows 8.1, and Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 pre-loaded at no additional cost.

Acer says the Aspire Switch 10 will be available in late May starting at $380.

Mozilla Gives Firefox Browser a Facelift with a Focus on Customization

Posted: 29 Apr 2014 08:45 AM PDT

Firefox 29This is Firefox like you've never seen it before

There haven't been very many "Wow!" moments since Mozilla switched to a rapid release schedule for its Firefox browser that includes frequent updates with mostly minor upgrades. Not this time. Mozilla today rolled out Firefox 29, and with it is a brand new look and feel. Mozilla wanted to give Firefox an "elegant" design while simultaneously overhauling the layout so that it would be the most customizable version yet.

"We reimagined and redesigned Firefox to reflect how you use the Web today and we are excited to introduce many features including an elegant and fun design, new menu, customization mode and an enhanced Firefox Sync service powered by Firefox Accounts," Mozilla stated.

The tabs are now sleeker and smoother with a greater emphasis placed on the tab you're currently visiting while the other ones fade into the background. This is supposed to make them less of a distraction so that the website you're viewing has your full attention.

Mozilla also moved the Firefox menu to the right corner of the toolbar, giving all your browser controls a single place to reside. In there you'll find a "Customize" tool that allows you to add or move any feature, service, or add-on.

Creating bookmarks is now a single-click affair, and if you create a Firefox account, you can sync the Awesome Bar history, saved passwords, bookmarks, open tabs, and form data across different devices.

You can read more in the release notes, which is also your ticket to downloading the new browser. If you already have Firefox, you can initiate the upate by going to Help and About Firefox.

Nokia's Future Begins with Newly Appointed CEO Rajeev Suri

Posted: 29 Apr 2014 08:20 AM PDT

Rajeev SuriNokia stock rises after naming new CEO

There's a new chief in town and his job will be to pick Nokia up by the bootstraps and kick the company into gear. After selling off its mobile handset business to Microsoft and reporting a less than stellar quarterly earnings report, Nokia on Tuesday promoted Rajeev Suri to President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), a promotion that will go into effect on May 1, 2014.

Highlighting Suri's challenge moving ahead is the fact that Nokia's net sales fell 15 percent year-over-year to €2.7 billion (around $3.7 billion) in the first quarter of 2014. On the bright side, the company's underlying profit rose 20 percent €304 (around $420.4 million), so things could certainly be worse. Going forward, Nokia views its post-Microsoft sale as the beginning of a new era.

"As Nokia opens this new chapter, the Nokia Board and I are confident that Rajeev is the right person to lead the company forward," said Risto Siilasmaa, Chairman of the Nokia Board of Directors. "He has a proven ability to create strategic clarity, drive innovation and growth, ensure disciplined execution, and deliver results. We believe that his passion for technology will help ensure that Nokia continues to deliver innovations that have a positive impact on people's lives."

Suri has been with Nokia for 1995. During that time, he's held a range of leadership positions within the company, most recently serving as CEO of NSN, the former joint venture between Nokia and Siemens that's now fully owned by Nokia.

"I am honored to have been asked to take this role, and excited about the possibilities that lie in our future," said Rajeev Suri. "Nokia, with its deep experience in connecting people and its three strong businesses, is well-positioned to tap new opportunities during this time of technological change. I look forward to working with the entire Nokia team as we embark on this exciting journey."

There are three areas Nokia says it will focus on. They include connectivity capable of handling massive numbes of devices and exponential increases in data traffic, location services that seamlessly bridge between the real and virtual worlds, and innovation (things like sensing, radio, and low power technologies).
