Gears of War 3: Four Ways it Feels Different Than Expected

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 06:00 AM PDT

The last installment of the Gears of War franchise is drawing near its release date. As such, Epic recently gave us a sneak peek into what we can expect from the campaign (besides the stuff that design director Cliff Bleszinski's showed on his Jimmy Fallon appearance). We fight the Leviathan sea monster from the perspective of Marcus Fenix and the Cole Train -- an opportunity that's new to the franchise. After playing through a generous portion of the first Act, Gears of War 3 feels refreshing in an unexpected sort-of way. The Gears are suffering from mental anguish, fatigue, and a lack of supplies; they aren't as strong as we'd hope.

1) The Gears are weak

After destroying Jericho, our heroes take to sea vessels, and each military unit has been left to their own fate (if you're unfamiliar with this turn of events, the game offers a quick recap). More than ever, Marcus is haunted by his father's death. But no, he's not really dead -- this discovery becomes the main catalyst for the story.

Pan Long Online - China's first open world action MMO

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 07:14 AM PDT

Well, the name of the game is directly translated as Pan Long, which means "something" Dragon which there is not exact translation for, hence I shall stick to the direct verbal pronunciation. Originally introduced at ChinaJoy 2011, I decided to keep this game for awhile before posting about it.

Developed by Aurora, a studio under China MMO bigwig Shanda Games (also owner of Korean studio Eyedentity Games, developer of Dragon Nest), it is apparently the first non-target 3D action MMO with an open world to be announced from China. It is a world first as well if it is a Free to Play? Think TERA Online going Free to Play with lesser graphics requirements and with a more medieval vibe (according to artwork).

Pan Long Online is based one a popular novel with the same name in China (below), and the game currently boasts a 360 degrees character view (duh) and an astonishing 18 million (18,000,000) square meters of open game area. Sandbox MMO? Well I am not really sure. Once again, the game does not use any tab-select target system, just pure action.

According to details revealed so far, there will be 3 unique and distinctive races, a pet system, a character growth system with much freedom and a total of 7 elements core to the game: Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, Thunder, Light and Dark. Not much information is available yet except that the core gameplay will be adapted from the novel itself. Excited yet? The game is currently still in development, hence there is not much news yet.

ArcheAge - English website updated with new feature

Posted: 14 Aug 2011 10:51 AM PDT

(Source) So, even there isn't a publisher announced for XL Games' maiden third generation MMO, ArcheAge, the game's English website had been online for sometime. It has now been updated with the new "Abilities" feature, where 10 of them are displayed. Basically, there are different skills under each ability, and each character will be able to choose 3 to form their characters and classes.

The combination will also affect stats such as Physical and Magic Attack etc. You can customize your own character right now (link) under the "Advanced" tab and find out what class your character is labeled under. More ArcheAge related news here (link)!

The Weekend Journal

Hmn, there is nothing on much this week. A few games went into Closed Beta, which you can see on the right panel. The one I am waiting for is actually Dragon Nest SEA's Open Beta phase, which is coming in 2 days' time. I am not sure why would a Open Beta begin on Tuesday though.

Digimon Master Online was supposed to go into Closed Beta as well, but it is now indefinitely postponed within 2 hours of the game's opening due to "technical errors'. I am still quite perplexed at how a game can be delayed on the start of Closed Beta using this reason. That's all, have a nice week all!
