Rise and Shiny: World of Battles

World of Battles starts off strong, it looks pretty cool at first glance, and it appears to allow you to control massive armies of riders, archers, giants and other fun units as you clash against equally massive armies. You do see a lot of combat in the game, and it is from the massive-army school of design, but unfortunately, the game quickly and regrettably drags itself down into a standard pit of grinding.

I started to see the end of this tunnel of drudgery near the end of my week with the game. It started off by giving me some basic tutorial tips and then pushed me into quest after quest that had to be completed before I was able to move on to the next one. Each step sucked the fun out of the game and made it seem as if I would never be seeing the massive battles and castle bombardments that the game's trailer promised.

One Shots Dusting crops with the boys
We're going to begin today's column with a very important announcement. It's so important that I'm breaking all the rules putting very important announcement in bold like that, but hopefully you're paying attention by now. We had a glitch with our email that pretty much blocked all submissions for One Shots since September 22nd, and so I never received them. I'm so sorry this has happened, but if you sent in a picture since then, I'd urge you to do it again. Thanks!

Meanwhile, Captain Matt paid a few thousand credits to go on a once-in-a-lifetime trip with Han and Chewie in Star Wars Galaxies. "Here's me going into lightspeed with the closest of friends!"

As Matt's living it up playing space chess with a Wookiee and getting his arms torn off, we've got many very important submissions to check out after the jump!

The Daily Grind: What NPC faction amuses you the most?

The Daily Grind What NPC faction amuses you the most
As of late I've been getting reacquainted with the crazy fun that is Fallen Earth. One of the things that I love about this game world is its off-kilter citizens who have mentally derailed since the apocalypse. There's a faction called the CoGs that I'm quite fond of, mostly for the fact that they worship old technology.

You see, Fallen Earth takes place enough after the end of the world so that people don't really have an idea what the world was like beforehand. So the CoGs have collected cell phones and computers and cars without totally understanding what they all do. But boy do they love them and want to see their "gods" rebuilt to their former glory.

So what NPC faction amuses you the most and why?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Make My MMO Crowdfunding October 6 19, 2013
This was quite a fortnight in the realm of crowdfunding, and for once we don't mean just Star Citizen news! More than one game met its funding goals, with one title proving that fans can be a very passionate lot: City of Titans reached its lofty goal within days. On top of that, two other games joined the fight for funding.

Conversely, Alteil Horizons pulled its campaign at literally the last minute to avoid the stigma of an unsuccessful stamp and plans to launch again. Want the scoop on all these stories and many more? Learn the latest right here in Make My MMO.

Wings Over Atreia: Jumping on Aion's limited-time events and pumpkin-carving contest

Wings Over Atreia Jumping on Aion's limitedtime events and pumpkincarving contest
As much as I know you probably want an announcement about the release of Aion 4.5 and the long-awaited Aethertech class, I am afraid I can only offer a distraction. A few distractions, actually, in the form of various in-game events and a real-world contest. And these events are ending PDQ, so to take advantage of them, you need to jump in now.

First off, this weekend only level 65s get a little incentive to dive into the Sauro Supply Base and and Ophidan Bridge dungeons. For all Daevas over level 21, there's a Brax Cafe event (with free food and rewards) that closes up shop at maintenance on Wednesday the 23rd. And for any and all Aion fans out in the real world, NCsoft is holding a pumpkin-carving contest until Halloween with an in-game reward for winners. And I've got all the details right here!

The Mog Log: Straight on down the line of Final Fantasy XIV's endgame

            Posted: 19 Oct 2013 12:00 PM PDT

I'm not going to miss the eight-person CM zergs.
Well, what do you know. Just before I was going to write a column about Final Fantasy XIV's endgame, the development changed the entire thing. And with such a little change, too.

Before Tuesday, the endgame was pretty simple. You had two main instances to worry about and three primals, one of which was only really relevant for a single quest. If you were decked out from all that, you had another challenge to undertake. The actual makeup hasn't changed since Tuesday, but which instances matter and how they're run has, since you now have two ways of getting those all-important Mythology tomestones.

For some of you reading, this is all stuff you don't even need to worry about yet. For others, it's the right here and right now that you deal with on a daily basis. So let's look at what the endgame is, what it was, and why I find myself oddly satisfied with it despite the overall sparse landscape.

More Black Desert beta vids, this time with parkour
As we reported earlier this week, Korean fantasy sandbox Black Desert has gone into beta. Steparu has published part one of an extensive preview including both a hands-on article and a series of lengthy high definition gameplay videos.

The clips show everything from combat and group play to exploration and dungeoneering. There's also an extensive look at the game's climbing and movement system. Steparu says that "it's not exactly Assassin's Creed style, but it does come close to it." See for yourself via the embeds after the break.

Windows RT 8.1 Update Removed from Microsoft Store

              Posted: 19 Oct 2013 02:41 PM PDT

SurfaceWindows RT 8.1 update removed after users had difficulty updating devices

After the much-anticipated release of the Windows 8.1 update, ZDNet reports that Microsoft has tempoarily pulled the Windows RT 8.1 update from the Windows Store sometime this morning.

Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet contacted Microsoft for further information after giving scant information about the removal of the update:

"Microsoft is investigating a situation affecting a limited number of users updating their Windows RT devices to Windows RT 8.1. As a result, we have temporarily removed the Windows RT 8.1 update from the Windows Store. We are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience. We will provide updates as they become available."

Have you already updated your Surface RT to Windows 8.1 yet? Have you experienced any issues with it?

Facebook Allowing Younger Users More Freedom

              Posted: 19 Oct 2013 02:11 PM PDT

FBLess privacy restrictions for Facebook users under 18

Younger Facebook users will now have much more freedom from the more adult-oriented social network. Previously, 13 to 17-year-olds who signed up were previously restricted from sharing updates, photos, and comments with the public, but now Facebook is relaxing its stance in an apparent bid to compete with other networks that allow younger users much more freedom.

Changes went into effect Thursday, via CNN, and younger users will be able to allow people to follow their profiles, post publicly, and interact with a wider scope of users than they were previously. However, this will not be without warning screens that will attempt to educate users on what "private" or "public" posts really mean.

At least there's some sort of attempt at letting younger users know there may be repercussions for their actions. This doesn't actually seem like such a great idea, but Facebook apparently needs to do something to up its user base, and this is a possible solution.

Dell Venue Tablets and XPS 15 Laptop Now Available

              Posted: 19 Oct 2013 01:31 PM PDT

XPS 15Dell's holiday lineup is a memorable one

Looking for a gift for those tech-conscious friends and family on your holiday list? Dell has a few ideas to help out. Earlier this month at the #DellVenue pop-up showcase in New York City, Dell introduced the Dell Venue 7, Venue 8, and Venue 8 Pro tablets, as well as the XPS 15 laptop. All three tablets, as well as the laptop, are now available for sale through Dell.com.

The Dell Venue 8 Pro runs Windows 8.1 out of the box, packed with Microsoft Office 2013 Home & Student, and the ability to run all Microsoft legacy applications. It starts at $299.99 and is the premiere option for that special person in your life who needs a little nudge in the right direction as far as productivity goes. Both Dell Venue 7 and Dell Venue 8 tablets are more affordable options, Android-based and running on Intel Atom Bay Trail processors for $149.9 and $179.99 each, respectively.

The Dell XPS 15 is a more powerful option for gamers and those looking to utilize their tech in much more active ways. It features a Quad HD+ 15.6-inch display with 3200 x 1800 pixels, and is available with Full HD for $1,499.99 or Quad HD+ for $1,899.99.

ASUS Adopting G-Sync Technology in Upcoming Monitors

              Posted: 19 Oct 2013 01:02 PM PDT

ASUSG-Sync technology amping up PC gaming

ASUS announced yesterday that it will, going forward for its next generation of monitors, be adopting Nvidia G-Sync technology. It's another development hot off the presses to come from Nvidia's The Way It's Meant to Be Played event, which we featured a couple days ago.

G-Sync tech synchronizes the monitor's refresh rate to the GPU's render rate, so you see images as soon as they're rendered. This means a world of sharper images for gamers, less latency and stuttering, and a smoother experience overall. It renders older tech such as V-Sync obsolete, decreasing latency and eliminating tearing.

ASUS will be releasing a G-Sync line of monitors starting in 2014. The VG248QE gaming monitor will be the first of the line, priced at $399 USD in North America.

If you're looking for some new tech to give you an edge when it comes to gaming, you might want to consider this monitor for your next purchase, as it looks to change gaming performance significantly.
