Rise and Shiny: World of Battles Posted: 20 Oct 2013 10:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Video, Business Models, Game Mechanics, Opinion, Free-to-Play, Browser, Hands-On, Casual, First Impressions, Rise and Shiny, Livestream, Miscellaneous World of Battles starts off strong, it looks pretty cool at first glance, and it appears to allow you to control massive armies of riders, archers, giants and other fun units as you clash against equally massive armies. You do see a lot of combat in the game, and it is from the massive-army school of design, but unfortunately, the game quickly and regrettably drags itself down into a standard pit of grinding.I started to see the end of this tunnel of drudgery near the end of my week with the game. It started off by giving me some basic tutorial tips and then pushed me into quest after quest that had to be completed before I was able to move on to the next one. Each step sucked the fun out of the game and made it seem as if I would never be seeing the massive battles and castle bombardments that the game's trailer promised. One Shots: Dusting crops with the boys Posted: 20 Oct 2013 08:00 AM PDT Filed under: Screenshots, Aion, Culture, Star Wars Galaxies, Star Trek Online, Guild Wars 2, One Shots, Miscellaneous We're going to begin today's column with a very important announcement. It's so important that I'm breaking all the rules putting very important announcement in bold like that, but hopefully you're paying attention by now. We had a glitch with our email that pretty much blocked all submissions for One Shots since September 22nd, and so I never received them. I'm so sorry this has happened, but if you sent in a picture since then, I'd urge you to do it again. Thanks!Meanwhile, Captain Matt paid a few thousand credits to go on a once-in-a-lifetime trip with Han and Chewie in Star Wars Galaxies. "Here's me going into lightspeed with the closest of friends!" As Matt's living it up playing space chess with a Wookiee and getting his arms torn off, we've got many very important submissions to check out after the jump! The Daily Grind: What NPC faction amuses you the most? Posted: 20 Oct 2013 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: Culture, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Miscellaneous As of late I've been getting reacquainted with the crazy fun that is Fallen Earth. One of the things that I love about this game world is its off-kilter citizens who have mentally derailed since the apocalypse. There's a faction called the CoGs that I'm quite fond of, mostly for the fact that they worship old technology. You see, Fallen Earth takes place enough after the end of the world so that people don't really have an idea what the world was like beforehand. So the CoGs have collected cell phones and computers and cars without totally understanding what they all do. But boy do they love them and want to see their "gods" rebuilt to their former glory. So what NPC faction amuses you the most and why? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! Make My MMO: Crowdfunding October 6 - 19, 2013 Posted: 19 Oct 2013 04:00 PM PDT Filed under: MMO Industry, Massively Meta, Miscellaneous, Crowdfunding, Make My MMO This was quite a fortnight in the realm of crowdfunding, and for once we don't mean just Star Citizen news! More than one game met its funding goals, with one title proving that fans can be a very passionate lot: City of Titans reached its lofty goal within days. On top of that, two other games joined the fight for funding.Conversely, Alteil Horizons pulled its campaign at literally the last minute to avoid the stigma of an unsuccessful stamp and plans to launch again. Want the scoop on all these stories and many more? Learn the latest right here in Make My MMO. Wings Over Atreia: Jumping on Aion's limited-time events and pumpkin-carving contest Posted: 19 Oct 2013 02:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Aion, Events (In-Game), Opinion, Free-to-Play, Wings Over Atreia As much as I know you probably want an announcement about the release of Aion 4.5 and the long-awaited Aethertech class, I am afraid I can only offer a distraction. A few distractions, actually, in the form of various in-game events and a real-world contest. And these events are ending PDQ, so to take advantage of them, you need to jump in now.First off, this weekend only level 65s get a little incentive to dive into the Sauro Supply Base and and Ophidan Bridge dungeons. For all Daevas over level 21, there's a Brax Cafe event (with free food and rewards) that closes up shop at maintenance on Wednesday the 23rd. And for any and all Aion fans out in the real world, NCsoft is holding a pumpkin-carving contest until Halloween with an in-game reward for winners. And I've got all the details right here! The Mog Log: Straight on down the line of Final Fantasy XIV's endgame Posted: 19 Oct 2013 12:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Endgame, Opinion, Consoles, Final Fantasy XIV, The Mog Log, Dungeons Well, what do you know. Just before I was going to write a column about Final Fantasy XIV's endgame, the development changed the entire thing. And with such a little change, too. Before Tuesday, the endgame was pretty simple. You had two main instances to worry about and three primals, one of which was only really relevant for a single quest. If you were decked out from all that, you had another challenge to undertake. The actual makeup hasn't changed since Tuesday, but which instances matter and how they're run has, since you now have two ways of getting those all-important Mythology tomestones. For some of you reading, this is all stuff you don't even need to worry about yet. For others, it's the right here and right now that you deal with on a daily basis. So let's look at what the endgame is, what it was, and why I find myself oddly satisfied with it despite the overall sparse landscape. More Black Desert beta vids, this time with parkour Posted: 19 Oct 2013 11:00 AM PDT Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, News Items, Sandbox, Black Desert As we reported earlier this week, Korean fantasy sandbox Black Desert has gone into beta. Steparu has published part one of an extensive preview including both a hands-on article and a series of lengthy high definition gameplay videos. The clips show everything from combat and group play to exploration and dungeoneering. There's also an extensive look at the game's climbing and movement system. Steparu says that "it's not exactly Assassin's Creed style, but it does come close to it." See for yourself via the embeds after the break.
