Windows RT Devices to Initially Ship with Preview Version of Office

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 06:01 PM PDT

Initially, Windows RT devices, including Microsoft's own "ARM-ed" Surface tablet, will only be available with a preview version of Office 2013 RT, Microsoft announced today in a post on the Office Next blog. But don't scrap your Windows RT purchase plans yet because, starting in early November, these devices will be automatically updated with the final version of Office Home & Student 2013 RT.

The final version of Windows RT will be rolled out in a graduated fashion between early November and January, with the choice of language pack determining who gets the update when. Microsoft will be revealing the exact update schedule on Windows 8 launch day, October 26, on the official Office blog.

This announcement occupies a very small part of what is a fairly lengthy blog post. It, the Office team has touched upon a number of things, including the raison d'ĂȘtre of Office for Windows RT and the various tablet-specific optimization it packs.

According to Microsoft, the Office for Windows RT project was started with the aim of delivering the "same level of polish and reliability" as Office for x86/x64 on ARM-based tablets. The task was easier said than done, though. The Office team had to accomplish this while keeping in mind the many special requirements associated with Windows RT tablets, including touchscreen support, portability, and the optimum use of limited resources.

If Microsoft is to be believed, Office for Windows and Office for Windows RT are very similar, with only a few subtle differences here and there. Office 2013 RT lacks the following features:

  • Macros, add-ins, and features that rely on ActiveX controls or 3rd party code such as the PowerPoint Slide Library ActiveX control and Flash Video Playback
  • Certain legacy features such as playing older media formats in PowerPoint (upgrade to modern formats and they will play) and editing equations written in Equation Editor 3.0, which was used in older versions of Office (viewing works fine)
  • Certain email sending features, since Windows RT does not support Outlook or other desktop mail applications (opening a mail app, such as the mail app that comes with Windows RT devices, and inserting your Office content works fine)
  • Creating a Data Model in Excel 2013 RT (PivotTables, QueryTables, Pivot Charts work fine)
  • Recording narrations in PowerPoint 2013 RT
  • Searching embedded audio/video files, recording audio/video notes, and importing from an attached scanner with OneNote 2013 RT (inserting audio/video notes or scanned images from another program works fine)

AMD Stays in the Game with Another Round of Radeon HD 7000 Series Price Cuts

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 10:25 AM PDT

Radeon Graphics CardTalk about a buyer's market if you're a gamer. It's great to time to go videocard shopping, both because there are new GPUs landing on store shelves, and also due to the fact that prices are coming down. Perhaps looking to steal some thunder from Nvidia's Kepler-based GeForce GTX 660 and GTX 650 launch, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is reportedly reducing the price of its Radeon HD 7000 series.

Here's how it breaks down, according to Softpedia:

  • Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition: $430 and up
  • Radeon HD 7970: $410 and up
  • Radeon HD 7950 Boost Edition: $300 and up
  • Radeon HD 7950: $290 and up
  • Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition: $240 and up
  • Radeon HD 7850: $200 and up

Outside of mail-in-rebates, we saw prices that were slightly higher online in most cases, but not by much. And if you are willing to play the MIR game (your mileage may vary), the deals get even better. Either way, there are a lot of capable GPUs out there that are more than up to the task of playing today's games without putting you in the poorhouse.

Nvidia Rounds Out Kepler Line with Budget Friendly GeForce GTX 660 and 650 Graphics Cards

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 07:15 AM PDT

GeForce GTX 660A few weeks ago, Nvidia hit the so-called GPU "sweet spot" when it launched the comparatively affordable GeForce GTX 660 Ti graphics card (be sure to check out our three-way roundup), putting Kepler within reach of gamers on a mid-range budget. Now mainstream gamers are invited to take Kepler home with the introduction of Nvidia's brand new GeForce GTX 660 and 650 graphics cards.

Starting at the top, the GTX 660 part (two of which we've already reviewed) is based on Nvidia's GK106 architecture and sports 960 CUDA cores, 80 texture units, 24 ROP units, 2GB of GDDR5 memory on a 192-bit bus, 980MHz base GPU clockspeed, 1098MHz boost GPU clockspeed, and 1502MHz (6008MHz effective) memory clockspeed.

Nvidia's GTX 650 is based on GK107 and is a much milder card. It has 384 CUDA cores, 32 texture units, 16 ROP units, 1GB or 2GB of GDDR5 clocked at 1250MHz on a 128-bit bus, and a 900MHz core clockspeed.

Both cards support up to four displays with a maximum digital resolution of 2560x1600, and both have a Dual-Link DVI-I and DVI-D ports. The 660 adds a full-size HDMI port and DisplayPort, whereas the 650 features a mini-HDMI port (and no DisplayPort).

The GeForce GTX 660 and GeForce GTX 650 are available today for around $229 and $109, respectively.

GoDaddy Takes Responsibility for Massive Outage, Compensates with Free Month of Service

Posted: 13 Sep 2012 06:14 AM PDT

GoDaddy ThumbnailGoDaddy, the largest ICANN-accredited registrar on the planet, claims it wasn't a hacker that disrupted service for millions of customers, just incompetence. The registrar didn't actually use that word, but it did deny reports that an Anonymous-affiliated hacker attack or distributed denial of service (DDoS) were to blame. To make up for the SNAFU, GoDaddy has been sending out emails to its customers to let them know they'll be credited for a month of service for each active/published site.

"The service outage was not caused by external influences. It was not a 'hack' and it was not a denial of service attack (DDoS). We have determined the service outage was due to a series of internal network events that corrupted router data tables," GoDaddy said in a statement. "Once the issues were identified, we took corrective actions to restore services for our customers and GoDaddy.com. We have implemented measures to prevent this from occurring again."

At the beginning of the week, GoDaddy was working feverishly to restore operations for millions of websites that had been knocked offline. A rogue hacker affiliated with Anonymous (but working on his own) took credit for the outage, but it now appears he was merely blowing smoke up the Internet's collective backside.

GoDaddy Car

GoDaddy maintains that at no time was any sensitive data compromised, including credit data, passwords, or any other identifying information.

"As a result of this disruption, your account will be credited for the value of 1-month of service for each of your active/published sites. This credit will be available to you for the next 7 days. Please click the button below to redeem your credit," GoDaddy states in emails sent to customers.

If you're a GoDaddy customer who was affected by the outage but didn't receive an email, you can give the company a ring at 1-480-505.8877.

The GeForce GTX 660 Debuts

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 03:33 PM PDT

The sweet-spot GPU has finally arrived

The GTX 660 is the first 28nm Kepler board based on a new GPU dubbed GK106, and the final 6-series card to support high-performance features like GPU Boost and SLI. Compared to the GTX 660 Ti, the GTX 660 offers the same 2GB of DDR5 memory, the same 192-bit memory interface, and the same number of ROP units, but loses two SMX units compared to the GTX 660 Ti, giving it just 960 CUDA cores compared to 1,344 in the previous cards (and the 1,536 in the GTX 680). At $230 it's our new favorite GPU in the price-to-performance category.

Gigabyte GTX 660 OC Version

Gigabyte GTX 660 OC Verison

Gigabyte's OC Edition offers additional clock speeds and cooling at no extra charge.

Gigabyte's GTX 660 is similar to MSI's board in that it's overclocked and has a cooler with a silly name—Windforce. The board is clocked at the same base and boost clock speeds as the MSI card, too, running at 1,033MHz and 1,098MHz, respectively. The cooler features four copper heat pipes, aluminum fins, and two large 10cm fans breathing down on the whole shebang. Even though the board sports a smallish 7.5-inch PCB, the cooling apparatus is so large that it's 2-inches longer than the PCB and extends the length of the card to 9.5 inches. With a cooler this large you expect it to perform quite well, and it does. It kept the card absolutely silent even when the board was being tortured in the Lab, and allowed it to run at a moderately cool 63 C under full load.

The board's benchmark performance was good enough for it to edge out the MSI card in most tests, but by a margin that's insignificant. Since both cards are clocked the same and spec'd the same, this level of parity is not surprising. On the software front, the included OC Guru II app is easy to use for monitoring the card's vitals and overclocking, but the charts it provides showing change over time are hard to read due to teeny text. There's also a "bundle" in the box but we are putting it in quotes because it's so meager—a single Molex-to-PCIe adapter.

The biggest surprise with the Gigabyte card is its MSRP is $230—exactly the same price as a bone-stock GTX 660, so it's like the extra overclocking and cooling are free. Since it offers roughly the same software, cooling, performance, and bundle as the MSI card, the price advantage is all we need to give the nod to Gigabyte in this round.

MSI GTX 660 Twin Frozr OC Edition

MSI GTX 660 Twin Frozr OC Edition

MSI's overclocked GTX 660 sports a sexy metallic cooling shroud.

MSI's GTX 660 is an all-around great card that includes a healthy dollop of overclocking and a side of Frozr to keep it cool. Its base clock speed is a decent 53MHz over stock at 1,033Mhz, and when running at full load we saw its boost clock speed rise 130MHz over stock to 1,110MHz, which is also higher than the stock boost-clock spec. The Twin Frozr III cooler sports three copper heat pipes, aluminum fins, and dual 8cm fans housed in a metal-alloy shroud to direct the airflow. Like the other GTX 660 cards, it uses just a single 6-pin power connector, but unlike the others it sports an extra-long 9-inch PCB (Gigabyte's board is just 7.5 inches but the cooler is actually 9 inches long).

In testing, the MSI board ran neck-and-neck with Gigabyte's similarly clocked offering, losing every test but one by a very slim margin. The cards were also a tied in the category of noise/cooling, as they both ran silently under full load at a mild 63 C. The MSI Afterburner software is usable but nothing to email home about and the board's skimpy bundle consists of a single Molex-to-PCIe adapter along with the software CD.

Overall there's a lot to like about MSI's Twin Frozr OC Edition card. It's quiet, cool, and performs very well, and we like the look of its gunmetal shroud and glinting metallic badge. However, the Gigabyte GTX 660 board performs just as well and is just as quiet, and since it costs $10 less, that's enough to give Gigabyte the advantage. If you are an MSI fan and/or a Frozr aficionado, you can get the 660 OC Edition for the same $230 price via a mail-in rebate, but since we hate rebates we'd rather just go with the Gigabyte and get the savings at the virtual cash register.

ArenaNet: Responsible MMO companies give away content

ArenaNet - Responsible MMO companies give away content
ArenaNet is launching an all-out assault on subscription MMOs according to a forum post by game designer Colin Johanson. "Guild Wars 2 will feature consistent free content updates and in-game events going forward. Our goal is to make it so you get more from GW2 for free than you get from a game you pay a subscription for," he said.

The company isn't abandoning the concept of profit for a barter economy just yet, though. The Black Lion Trading Company will feature additional offerings as well as "large-scale expansion content down the road," according to Johanson.

"We do appreciate that you'd like to buy lots of new content, but we'd prefer to give a lot of it to you for free, because that's what we think a responsible MMO company does," he said.

The Summoner's Guidebook: Following the League of Legends metagame

The Summoner's Guidebook Following the League of Legends metagame
One thing that pops up a lot in the comments of the Summoner's Guidebook is how you readers like to play outside the metagame. There's nothing wrong with experimenting with new builds or compositions, and with over a hundred different champions, League of Legends has a lot of room for experimentation. However, the established metagame is the way it is for a reason. People played the way they thought was best, and through collaboration, determined what strategies worked the best. Laning champions in their current "accepted" positions has evolved over the few years since LoL's release.

Choosing to play a composition outside the metagame is always a gamble. You're trading stability and familiarity for a gimmick, and that can backfire. Playing in the established metagame is a statement that you want to let skill be the deciding factor in battle and that you can handle silly tricks like moving the duo lane or running a heavy kill lane on bottom.

On the other hand, unorthodox positioning of champions can be an asset, since the initial unfamiliarity of whatever composition you've run can lead to mistakes on the enemy's part. As little mistakes can easily snowball on the Fields of Justice, playing a gimmick is all about making the most of those kinds of openings. This week, we'll talk about some common choices for unorthodox lanes and also how you can deal with them.

The Guild Counsel: Dealing with the Backseat Driver

The Guild Counsel Dealing with the Backseat Driver
Lots of MMOs these days have handy tutorials, pop-up tip windows, and highlighted marks to show you where to go and what to stab. Unfortunately, there are no advice windows that show up when you have to make a tough decision as a guild leader (although that would be a great addon!). Instead, leaders have to rely on past experience and a little bit of gut instinct and then hope for the best.

Of course, if you're faced with two paths, and you choose path A, you can pretty much guarantee that someone will voice his support for path B, and that can lead to no end of headaches and potential drama. Let's take a look this week at identifying and handling the "Backseat Driver."

The Perfect Ten: Ways MMOs explain infinite resurrection

The Perfect Ten Ways MMOs explain infinite resurrection
Why? Why do we die in MMOs and receive an infinite number of resurrections? Are we in a type of hell defined by endless combat and suffering, doomed to never escape the cycle? Is this a cruel experiment being performed by supreme alien beings from afar? Does that make us the living undead, immortal Highlanders, or something even more significant?

If you're looking at me with that look you have in your eye right now, I'd like to remind you that asking these questions is more in line with the core of RPGs than just mashing the 1-2-3 buttons. The rules that make up and dictate our virtual lives should have both meaning and sense, yet so many of these games expect us to just blithely accept that we can come back from the dead over and over without nary an explanation.

Well, I like explanations. Even if it's just polite nonsense, a thought-out reason as to why our characters are death-proof tells me that the devs treat their game with a higher degree of integrity than others. So here are 10 MMOs in which the endless cycle of death and resurrection gets at least a backhanded explanation instead of "shut up, just accept it."

NCsoft has just announced that the recently launched Guild Wars 2 has sold over two million copies. The record was reached shortly after sales resumed earlier this week. Sales were originally halted shortly after launch when the studio was overwhelmed with more players than they anticipated, which caused problems with server stability.

Gamescom 2012 was not a show of many big surprises. Fans and press alike were mostly given in-depth looks at things to come for existing franchises and games that were announced at E3 or even before that.

But that doesn't mean that there were no exciting little bits of information to be scrounged up here and there. In Cologne, we sat down for a chat with NCsoft's Stephen Levy as he spilled the beans on Korean martial arts MMO Blade & Soul, but we haven't been allowed to talk about it until today. The best part? Anarchy Online - sky surfing
Funcom's recent round of restructuring reminded me of the fact that the company is still working on the long-awaited graphical upgrade to Anarchy Online. The game is positively ancient by MMO standards, having originally released in 2001, and it looks the part.

After a decade of additions, though, and because the base game was quite feature-rich already, AO is still an interesting title to play despite the dated aesthetic. Or maybe I'm just nostalgic for my first MMO. Nah, probably not.

Anyhow, this brings me around to the requisite early-morning question. Assuming it's still in operation, would a visual overhaul bring you back to your first MMO?

The Secret World delays Digging Deeper again
After two delays already, The Secret World players may have already suspected what Funcom recently announced -- the second monthly update for the game has been postponed yet again. Hopefully, the third time's the charm.

This third delay stems from the same exploit initially found on Tuesday that forced the second one, which pushed Digging Deeper back by one day. Apparently, more time is needed to remove the issue and thoroughly test the client. Issue #2 -- with its rocket launcher, new make-up and hairstyles, and additional missions -- will be deployed to live servers next week.

WildStar Wednesday shows off the telegraphs of combat

This here's my very favorite gun.
It makes sense that in the space western atmosphere of WildStar you'll have to worry about telegraphs. But these aren't the sort of telegraphs that communicate a message over long distances. No, these are combat telegraphs, the red areas that show up on the battlefield to let you know that something is about to happen. In this week's WildStar Wednesday, executive producer Jeremy Gaffney narrates a video showing off the telegraphs in the wild.

While the telegraph system is universal in notifying players that something is about to happen, every warning requires a different response. Some are attacks that can be dodged by a quick sidestep, some require fast movement, and some require unorthodox movement by jumping behind the monster. Gaffney also shows off how environmental triggers can be used against enemies by luring them into one another's attacks or into unsafe areas, creating a dynamic combat environment. Take a look at the full video just past the break to see just how the telegraph system gets the message across to players in the game.

R.A. Salvatore details the lack of death in Project Copernicus

Dying of starvation and then being reborn would kind of blow. Especially if you were in the middle of nowhere.
"To be or not to be" is not a question asked in most MMOs. Characters don't die permanently, after all. But Project Copernicus wouldn't have waved that fact off as an irrelevant necessity of game mechanics. No, according to R.A. Salvatore, the game world would have explored the meaning behind a world wherein no one truly dies and everyone is functionally immortal.

Players who enjoyed Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning will recall that the game opens with the player character returning from death thanks to the Well of Souls. In Project Copernicus, the Well of Souls would have been active not just for one individual but for everyone in the world. Returning from death would be something that happens not just to players but to every part of the world.

It's not hard to imagine the ways in which a world would seem different if death was no longer something to be feared or avoided. Salvatore laments that the concept is unlikely to see execution now, even with buyers looking to purchase the 38 Studios assets from the state of Rhode Island.

In the video, Michelle delivers both concept art and a few brief clips of Sunstone's environs. "We definitely wanted to go with a new theme," she said, "something players haven't gotten to experience before."

Check out the video for yourself after the jump and let us know what you think!

Choose My Adventure The Secret World takes the stage
O MJ, MJ, wherefore art thou going MJ? The secret is out... er, in. I am off to the land of conspiracies. And no, I don't mean high school.

Going into this vote, many a Massively staffer thought that one game was a shoe-in and would have a decisive win. Well, we were partially right: The win was definitely decisive, but if we were putting money on it, we would have empty pockets right now! With a resounding shout that nearly leveled a section of al-Merah, you have declared that The Secret World will take center stage during this Choose My Adventure series. It just goes to show that you can't necessarily predict things, especially when a passionate fanbase rallies together.

Although this game choice is admitted unexpected, I am very excited to play this out with you. Many of you already know I really enjoy playing TSW. In fact, a few have expressed concern over this. Let me ease your thoughts a bit. Am I familiar with things about The Secret World? Yes, I am, but so are many of you. Do I love parts of it? Certainly! Do I know or have I experienced all there is to the game? Not in the slightest. And besides, remember that I won't be playing as I would play; Choose My Adventure is all about you telling me how to play your way. Trust me when I say we'll explore things in a whole new way because you will be directing each scene. So what's my first line?

RIFT's Calm Before the Storm update adds crossfaction capabilities, world event, and more
RIFT's first expansion is just around the bend, and today Trion has updated its fantasy MMORPG with a patch titled Calm Before the Storm. That's storm as in Storm Legion, the megahuge content drop coming your way on November 13th.

Today's patch lays the groundwork with some smaller-scale updates including a new world event, a new instant adventure opportunity in Scarwood Reach, and cross-faction gameplay that allows you to join forces with your Defiant or Guardian brethren to tackle dungeons, raids, and PvP challenges.

DDO Update 16 will have 'generous helping of adventures'
Dungeons and Dragons Online's Update 16 is preparing to deliver a "generous helping of Forgotten Realms adventures" this November, according to Producer Fernando Paiz. In a new letter to the community, Paiz looks ahead to the game's next major update, which he says will expand high-level content in the new world setting.

"There will be new monsters to fight, a new story to explore, and castles to plunder (because every good D&D campaign needs castles)!," Paiz writes. He says that Update 16 will also contain an additional Epic Destiny called Primal Avatar.

Turbine is also focusing on whittling down its known issues list with several bug updates and fixes. Paiz says that Update 17 should arrive by the end of the year as well, but it will be a smaller patch with updates to seasonal festivities. He also hints at the studio's plans for DDO in 2013, including updates to both campaign settings and a return to Gianthold.

Free for All: Getting lost in the labyrinth of Wurm Online

Wurm Online is a game of darkness. Really, the entire world is balanced on what will happen after the sun sets. If a player isn't careful, she can find herself lost and alone without a torch to light her path. I don't mean to make the daylight out to be a haven from danger; a player can die during the day as easily as at night. But at least during the day, a far-off shelter can be aimed for. Unless there's fog, of course.

OK, look. Wurm Online is a game of super-scary death things, but the night is particularly scary. That's what I meant.

When an old Vanguard: Saga of Heroes buddy of mine let me know that he and his friends had built a giant maze in Wurm, one that can actually keep players occupied for hours and can possibly lead to injury or death, I jumped into a tiny rowboat and paddled my way south toward the Deliverance server. I had to see this thing for myself.

Enter at Your Own Rift Checking out the Calm Before the Storm, Update 110
You had me at "I've slept so long." Seriously, I rarely pay any attention to MMO trailers because they tend to be heavy on CGI, so what you see on the screen has nothing to do with what you'll actually see in the game. But with the Storm Legion trailer, a lot of it looks exactly like what we've seen in demos and gameplay videos that the RIFT team has shown at recent conventions. In other words, I can't wait for November to arrive.

But before the storm comes the calm, and before the expansion comes one last game update. RIFT launched about a year and a half ago and is closing in on its 10th update, a nice round number leading into the first expansion. That's an aggressive schedule by any MMO standard, but it's particularly impressive when you dig into the patch notes and see exactly what's changed each time. With the imminent arrival of the last update before the first expansion, I made my way back over to the test server to get a glimpse of some of the changes. Some of them are coming any day now with update 1.10, while others hint at what's coming in the lead-up to the expansion.
