ArenaNet: Responsible MMO companies give away content Posted: 13 Sep 2012 10:30 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Business models, MMO industry, New titles, News items, Guild Wars 2, Free-to-play ArenaNet is launching an all-out assault on subscription MMOs according to a forum post by game designer Colin Johanson. "Guild Wars 2 will feature consistent free content updates and in-game events going forward. Our goal is to make it so you get more from GW2 for free than you get from a game you pay a subscription for," he said. The company isn't abandoning the concept of profit for a barter economy just yet, though. The Black Lion Trading Company will feature additional offerings as well as "large-scale expansion content down the road," according to Johanson. "We do appreciate that you'd like to buy lots of new content, but we'd prefer to give a lot of it to you for free, because that's what we think a responsible MMO company does," he said. The Summoner's Guidebook: Following the League of Legends metagame Posted: 13 Sep 2012 10:00 AM PDT Filed under: PvP, Opinion, Free-to-play, MOBA, The Summoner's Guidebook One thing that pops up a lot in the comments of the Summoner's Guidebook is how you readers like to play outside the metagame. There's nothing wrong with experimenting with new builds or compositions, and with over a hundred different champions, League of Legends has a lot of room for experimentation. However, the established metagame is the way it is for a reason. People played the way they thought was best, and through collaboration, determined what strategies worked the best. Laning champions in their current "accepted" positions has evolved over the few years since LoL's release.Choosing to play a composition outside the metagame is always a gamble. You're trading stability and familiarity for a gimmick, and that can backfire. Playing in the established metagame is a statement that you want to let skill be the deciding factor in battle and that you can handle silly tricks like moving the duo lane or running a heavy kill lane on bottom. On the other hand, unorthodox positioning of champions can be an asset, since the initial unfamiliarity of whatever composition you've run can lead to mistakes on the enemy's part. As little mistakes can easily snowball on the Fields of Justice, playing a gimmick is all about making the most of those kinds of openings. This week, we'll talk about some common choices for unorthodox lanes and also how you can deal with them. The Guild Counsel: Dealing with the Backseat Driver Posted: 13 Sep 2012 09:00 AM PDT Filed under: Guilds, Opinion, The Guild Counsel, Miscellaneous Lots of MMOs these days have handy tutorials, pop-up tip windows, and highlighted marks to show you where to go and what to stab. Unfortunately, there are no advice windows that show up when you have to make a tough decision as a guild leader (although that would be a great addon!). Instead, leaders have to rely on past experience and a little bit of gut instinct and then hope for the best.Of course, if you're faced with two paths, and you choose path A, you can pretty much guarantee that someone will voice his support for path B, and that can lead to no end of headaches and potential drama. Let's take a look this week at identifying and handling the "Backseat Driver." The Perfect Ten: Ways MMOs explain infinite resurrection Posted: 13 Sep 2012 08:00 AM PDT Filed under: City of Heroes, Dungeons and Dragons Online, EVE Online, Fallen Earth, Lord of the Rings Online, The Matrix Online, The Secret World, Humor, RIFT, Allods Online, Perfect Ten, Miscellaneous Why? Why do we die in MMOs and receive an infinite number of resurrections? Are we in a type of hell defined by endless combat and suffering, doomed to never escape the cycle? Is this a cruel experiment being performed by supreme alien beings from afar? Does that make us the living undead, immortal Highlanders, or something even more significant? If you're looking at me with that look you have in your eye right now, I'd like to remind you that asking these questions is more in line with the core of RPGs than just mashing the 1-2-3 buttons. The rules that make up and dictate our virtual lives should have both meaning and sense, yet so many of these games expect us to just blithely accept that we can come back from the dead over and over without nary an explanation. Well, I like explanations. Even if it's just polite nonsense, a thought-out reason as to why our characters are death-proof tells me that the devs treat their game with a higher degree of integrity than others. So here are 10 MMOs in which the endless cycle of death and resurrection gets at least a backhanded explanation instead of "shut up, just accept it." Guild Wars 2 breaks the two million sales mark Posted: 13 Sep 2012 07:30 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, MMO industry, New titles, News items, Guild Wars 2, Free-to-play NCsoft has just announced that the recently launched Guild Wars 2 has sold over two million copies. The record was reached shortly after sales resumed earlier this week. Sales were originally halted shortly after launch when the studio was overwhelmed with more players than they anticipated, which caused problems with server stability.[Source: NCsoft press release] Guild Wars 2 breaks the two million sales mark originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 13 Sep 2012 09:30:00 EST. Blade & Soul is headed west Posted: 13 Sep 2012 07:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Classes, Game mechanics, Interviews, MMO industry, Previews, PvP, PvE, Opinion, Massively Interviews, Massively Event Coverage, Blade & Soul Gamescom 2012 was not a show of many big surprises. Fans and press alike were mostly given in-depth looks at things to come for existing franchises and games that were announced at E3 or even before that. But that doesn't mean that there were no exciting little bits of information to be scrounged up here and there. In Cologne, we sat down for a chat with NCsoft's Stephen Levy as he spilled the beans on Korean martial arts MMO Blade & Soul, but we haven't been allowed to talk about it until today. The best part? The Daily Grind: Would a graphical upgrade bring you back to your first MMO? Posted: 13 Sep 2012 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, Anarchy Online, Opinion, Free-to-play, The Daily Grind Funcom's recent round of restructuring reminded me of the fact that the company is still working on the long-awaited graphical upgrade to Anarchy Online. The game is positively ancient by MMO standards, having originally released in 2001, and it looks the part. After a decade of additions, though, and because the base game was quite feature-rich already, AO is still an interesting title to play despite the dated aesthetic. Or maybe I'm just nostalgic for my first MMO. Nah, probably not. Anyhow, this brings me around to the requisite early-morning question. Assuming it's still in operation, would a visual overhaul bring you back to your first MMO? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! The Secret World's Digging Deeper delayed again Posted: 13 Sep 2012 05:30 AM PDT Filed under: Horror, Sci-fi, MMO industry, New titles, Patches, News items, The Secret World After two delays already, The Secret World players may have already suspected what Funcom recently announced -- the second monthly update for the game has been postponed yet again. Hopefully, the third time's the charm. This third delay stems from the same exploit initially found on Tuesday that forced the second one, which pushed Digging Deeper back by one day. Apparently, more time is needed to remove the issue and thoroughly test the client. Issue #2 -- with its rocket launcher, new make-up and hairstyles, and additional missions -- will be deployed to live servers next week. WildStar Wednesday shows off the telegraphs of combat Posted: 12 Sep 2012 06:00 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, Video, Game mechanics, News items, WildStar It makes sense that in the space western atmosphere of WildStar you'll have to worry about telegraphs. But these aren't the sort of telegraphs that communicate a message over long distances. No, these are combat telegraphs, the red areas that show up on the battlefield to let you know that something is about to happen. In this week's WildStar Wednesday, executive producer Jeremy Gaffney narrates a video showing off the telegraphs in the wild. While the telegraph system is universal in notifying players that something is about to happen, every warning requires a different response. Some are attacks that can be dodged by a quick sidestep, some require fast movement, and some require unorthodox movement by jumping behind the monster. Gaffney also shows off how environmental triggers can be used against enemies by luring them into one another's attacks or into unsafe areas, creating a dynamic combat environment. Take a look at the full video just past the break to see just how the telegraph system gets the message across to players in the game. R.A. Salvatore details the lack of death in Project Copernicus Posted: 12 Sep 2012 05:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Game mechanics, Lore, News items "To be or not to be" is not a question asked in most MMOs. Characters don't die permanently, after all. But Project Copernicus wouldn't have waved that fact off as an irrelevant necessity of game mechanics. No, according to R.A. Salvatore, the game world would have explored the meaning behind a world wherein no one truly dies and everyone is functionally immortal.Players who enjoyed Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning will recall that the game opens with the player character returning from death thanks to the Well of Souls. In Project Copernicus, the Well of Souls would have been active not just for one individual but for everyone in the world. Returning from death would be something that happens not just to players but to every part of the world. It's not hard to imagine the ways in which a world would seem different if death was no longer something to be feared or avoided. Salvatore laments that the concept is unlikely to see execution now, even with buyers looking to purchase the 38 Studios assets from the state of Rhode Island. R.A. Choose My Adventure: The Secret World takes the stage Posted: 12 Sep 2012 03:00 PM PDT Filed under: Horror, Sci-fi, Polls, Opinion, Massively Meta, The Secret World, Choose My Adventure O MJ, MJ, wherefore art thou going MJ? The secret is out... er, in. I am off to the land of conspiracies. And no, I don't mean high school.Going into this vote, many a Massively staffer thought that one game was a shoe-in and would have a decisive win. Well, we were partially right: The win was definitely decisive, but if we were putting money on it, we would have empty pockets right now! With a resounding shout that nearly leveled a section of al-Merah, you have declared that The Secret World will take center stage during this Choose My Adventure series. It just goes to show that you can't necessarily predict things, especially when a passionate fanbase rallies together. Although this game choice is admitted unexpected, I am very excited to play this out with you. Many of you already know I really enjoy playing TSW. In fact, a few have expressed concern over this. Let me ease your thoughts a bit. Am I familiar with things about The Secret World? Yes, I am, but so are many of you. Do I love parts of it? Certainly! Do I know or have I experienced all there is to the game? Not in the slightest. And besides, remember that I won't be playing as I would play; Choose My Adventure is all about you telling me how to play your way. Trust me when I say we'll explore things in a whole new way because you will be directing each scene. So what's my first line? DDO Update 16 will have 'generous helping of adventures' Posted: 12 Sep 2012 01:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Patches, Previews, Free-to-play, Dev Diaries Dungeons and Dragons Online's Update 16 is preparing to deliver a "generous helping of Forgotten Realms adventures" this November, according to Producer Fernando Paiz. In a new letter to the community, Paiz looks ahead to the game's next major update, which he says will expand high-level content in the new world setting."There will be new monsters to fight, a new story to explore, and castles to plunder (because every good D&D campaign needs castles)!," Paiz writes. He says that Update 16 will also contain an additional Epic Destiny called Primal Avatar. Turbine is also focusing on whittling down its known issues list with several bug updates and fixes. Paiz says that Update 17 should arrive by the end of the year as well, but it will be a smaller patch with updates to seasonal festivities. He also hints at the studio's plans for DDO in 2013, including updates to both campaign settings and a return to Gianthold. Free for All: Getting lost in the labyrinth of Wurm Online Posted: 12 Sep 2012 12:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Video, Culture, Game mechanics, Interviews, Wurm Online, Vanguard, Free-to-play, Virtual worlds, Humor, Free for All, Livestream, Sandbox, Crafting, Housing Wurm Online is a game of darkness. Really, the entire world is balanced on what will happen after the sun sets. If a player isn't careful, she can find herself lost and alone without a torch to light her path. I don't mean to make the daylight out to be a haven from danger; a player can die during the day as easily as at night. But at least during the day, a far-off shelter can be aimed for. Unless there's fog, of course.OK, look. Wurm Online is a game of super-scary death things, but the night is particularly scary. That's what I meant. When an old Vanguard: Saga of Heroes buddy of mine let me know that he and his friends had built a giant maze in Wurm, one that can actually keep players occupied for hours and can possibly lead to injury or death, I jumped into a tiny rowboat and paddled my way south toward the Deliverance server. I had to see this thing for myself. Enter at Your Own Rift: The calm before the storm Posted: 12 Sep 2012 11:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Patches, Previews, Opinion, RIFT, Enter at Your Own Rift You had me at "I've slept so long." Seriously, I rarely pay any attention to MMO trailers because they tend to be heavy on CGI, so what you see on the screen has nothing to do with what you'll actually see in the game. But with the Storm Legion trailer, a lot of it looks exactly like what we've seen in demos and gameplay videos that the RIFT team has shown at recent conventions. In other words, I can't wait for November to arrive. But before the storm comes the calm, and before the expansion comes one last game update. RIFT launched about a year and a half ago and is closing in on its 10th update, a nice round number leading into the first expansion. That's an aggressive schedule by any MMO standard, but it's particularly impressive when you dig into the patch notes and see exactly what's changed each time. With the imminent arrival of the last update before the first expansion, I made my way back over to the test server to get a glimpse of some of the changes. Some of them are coming any day now with update 1.10, while others hint at what's coming in the lead-up to the expansion.
