[gamescom 2011] NCsoft and Carbine reveals WildStar

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 07:05 AM PDT

(Official website) A few days ago (link), I posted about NCsoft and Carbine Studios revealing their first MMO title at gamescom 2011. The game has now been officially announced, titled WildStar. Not much information is available right now, but Carbine Studios is aiming high to develop something unique in the MMO industry.

Below is the part of the official news announcing WildStar by NCsoft. Will this title be a hit like ArenaNet's Guild Wars? Time will tell. Further down are some screenshots for the game. Sign up for Beta here (link) ~!

Developed by NCsoft's Southern California-based Carbine Studios, WildStar offers epic high adventure, where players make their mark as Explorers, Soldiers, Scientists or Settlers and lay claim to a mysterious planet on the edge of known space.

WildStar's iconic visual style and "Momentum Mechanics" immerse players in a deep world stacked with content, challenges and rewards that respond to the play style choices of individual players. Depending on a combination of faction, race, class, and path, WildStar will present gamers with unending surprises, mini-quests and challenges, ensuring that their experiences are fun and fresh.

[gamescom 2011] Guild Wars 2 trailer

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 03:19 AM PDT

Hmn, I am sure by now most, if not all online gamers would have heard about ArenaNet's upcoming MMO, Guild Wars 2. The successor to the global success, Guild Wars, the game is on showcase at gamescom 2011 in Germany now and the new trailer was revealed as well. Still no dates set for its release or a Beta even though most predict it to be released by the end of the year. Watch the previously released underwater combat footage here (link)! Enjoy~!

[gamescom 2011] ASTA: The War of Tears and Winds

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 09:50 PM PDT

Perhaps one of the rare few Korean online games to be showcased at gamescom 2011 in Germany, ASTA's fame is boosted by the fact that it is developed using Crytek's latest game engine, CryEngine 3. Yes, the same one which was used to develop Crysis 2. In the latest developer trailer voiced over in English, the developers over at Polygon Studios give us an insight on what to ASTA has to offer and what we can expect from the game. And don't ask me why was a male voice over used for the nice lady. More information can be found here (link).

[gamescom 2011] Dota 2 begins Beta signup

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 06:07 PM PDT

(Official website) I first played DOTA, or Defense of the Ancients, on Warcraft III back in 2004. Subsequently, I played for around 3 years more before devoting my time on other games. League of Legends (LoL) and Heroes of Newerth (HoN) came along not long ago, but I was never really into them, finding something lacking compared to the original DOTA. Could you imagine how glad I was when I first heard about Dota 2 back in October last year?

Even though 2 of the "Big 3" of the DOTA modders, Pendragon and Guinsoo are working on League of Legends (link), the media shy IceFrog is still undeterred in developing Dota 2 using Valve's Source Engine. I found an interesting article on DOTA's history (link) and why it is Dota 2, not DOTA 2. Have a read and don't forget to sign up at the official website (link) for Beta!

Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes revealed

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 08:39 AM PDT

(Official website) This came as an unexpected news to me from a friend on MSN. It seems EA Bioware, while working on Star Wars: The Old Republic, had a different team working on a new Warhammer title. Which looks... kind of not Warhmmerish if I may comment...

Introducing Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes, an upcoming Free to Play title. With little details given, the short description over at the website, screenshots and the trailer make the game sounds like a hybrid between DOTA and Team Fortress 2. Well, we shall see. Signup for Beta at the official website now!

[gamescom 2011] NHN seeking attention with 4 MMO titles

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 07:56 AM PDT

Korean MMO giant NHN, perhaps more well known through its gaming portals such as Hangame in Korea and Ijji in North America, will be having a booth at this year's gamescom. 4 titles will be displayed at the show, with the aim of perhaps finding partners to license the games. While one is a fishing MMO (Fishing Hero) and the other is a MMOFPS (Born to Fire), I have my sight set on the other 2 games.

First up will be Trinity 2, and yes it is a sequel which the predecessor apparently did not see an English release. An action side-scroller, the effects are certainly top-notch and polished. The classes seems really interesting as well. Let's hope a publisher or 2 will snap the game up for different English regions!

Second will be ASTA: The War of Wind and Tears (link), one of the titles getting much attention since it is developed using the latest CryEngine 3. Touted by the Korean media as an oriental World of Warcraft, which I am not sure is a good or bad thing, the game looks really really normal to me currently. I hope there will be a new trailer to showcase what the game has to offer other than the graphics.

1UP's Wipeout In The Zone Giveaway

1UP's Wipeout In The Zone Giveaway
How To Play

There's nothing quite like the sight of someone taking a leap of faith and falling square on their nose. Watching people faceplant is one of the basic components of funny, but there's a surreal level of awesome when you watch yourself tumble into humiliation.

Enter Wipeout: In The Zone. Now you can experience the same thrills as you jump, balance, slip and slide all over the place without actually getting soaked when you inevitably fail and hit the water. Why wouldn't you want to play?

Here's what it takes to win:

Escape Plan: The Vita Gets its Own Limbo

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 09:31 PM PDT

Take two guys named Laarg and Lil, make them extremely susceptible to death, and you get Escape Plan. The fastest way I can describe this game is to compare it to Limbo, but that wouldn't give this game justice, now would it? I mean, sure they're both 2D puzzle platformers. And on top of that, they're both in black and white -- now I just sound like a jerk.

Escape Plan starts simple enough: the duo wake up in a room, and you move them by simply swiping your finger over the desired character to get him walking. Your next step is to help them survive and make it into the next room. Note: any sort of object can kill them. Even a small block can send Lil face-first into death. And we don't want this happening -- especially since both characters tend to have cute audio cues.

Infinity Blade Got in the Way of Shadow Complex 2

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 05:46 PM PDT

Shadow Complex

One of the best Metroidvania-style games in recent memory is Shadow Complex on the Xbox Live Arcade. It was developed by Chair Entertainment and Epic Games, the latter of which is known for big shooters like Unreal Tournament and Gears of War. When Shadow Complex turned out to be a major success -- it set a sales record in its first week -- fans expected a sequel to be coming on its heels. Instead, Epic and Chair moved on to other things. It was one of those projects in particular that got in the way of Shadow Complex 2.

"The reviews were great, it was a record seller for a single-player game on the platform, but at the same time we've got this mobile gaming push that's coming in strong," Epic Games president Mike Capps said during a GDC Europe keynote, Joystiq reports. "And the big thing for me was that we were looking what the iPhone could do, and the games that were on iPhone, and we thought there was a huge gap, so we put our engine team on the problem, and that's where we came up with Infinity Blade.

"We were thinking about the sequel [to Shadow Complex], we were ready and 'Maybe we should start working on this,' and instead stopped everything and went and made Infinity Blade."

Resistance: Burning Skies May be The Answer to Portable Shooters

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 05:32 PM PDT

At this year's E3, I had the misfortune of eagerly watching other gamers try out the PlayStation Vita hands-on, while missing out on the opportunity myself. So during Sony's Gamescom event, not only do I get to mess around with a Vita, but I do so with an impressive title like Resistance: Burning Skies. Any skepticism I have for the device is thrown away within the first five minutes of this demo. A portable first-person shooter with dual analog sticks? Yes, please.

The story starts off with Riley, a fireman, picking up an axe to fend off some Chimera. Some of the button mappings feel redundant, but according to senior staff producer Frank Simon, this is to allow gamers to choose how they want to experience the game. For instance, you can melee by either tapping the axe image on the touch screen, or using the right trigger.

Lumines and Assassin's Creed Among Vita Games Coming From Ubisoft

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 04:28 PM PDT

Assassin's Creed

Ubisoft has been a strong supporter of the 3DS thus far, and it has a number of games still to come to it this year. It will likewise be bringing quite a few games to market for Vita, as today it officially announced six projects, the most noteworthy of which are new games in the Assassin's Creed and Lumines series.

"With its processing power, dual tactile screens and cameras, PS Vita allows creators like Ubisoft new and unique opportunities to develop innovative games," said Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. "We've got a strong and varied line-up that will offer fun and immersion to all audiences of the PS Vita."

The full slate of Ubisoft Vita games is comprised of Assassin's Creed, Rayman Origins, Lumines, Asphalt, Dungeon Hunter Alliance, and Michael Jackson The Experience.

Dota 2 Beta Sign-Ups Begin as Gameplay Debut Nears

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 03:03 PM PDT

We're just hours away from getting our first official look at Dota 2 gameplay footage. The game's first trailer made its debut yesterday, but it didn't contain a bit of gameplay, leaving us to longingly stare at leaked screenshots that might be several months old and feature an outdated user interface.

A tournament is set to take place at Gamescom that will be streamed online. This is meant to be our first official look at the game itself, with those competing looking to secure their share of $1 million in prize money. The International is set to kick off at 1am Pacific (4am Eastern) on August 17. A schedule has been posted at the official website where you'll be able to find links to live broadcasts and replays as they become available.

On the website you'll also see a link to sign into Steam. Once you've done that, you'll be able to add yourself to the pool of candidates for the beta test.

Vita's RAM Wasn't Downgraded to Reach $249.99 Price

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 02:29 PM PDT

Vita

Just prior to the Vita being named and priced at E3, a report circulated suggesting that the system's RAM had been halved, getting cut down from 512MB to 256MB. This was supposedly in order to make it possible to sell the system at a price between $250 and $300 for the low-end model. When a $249.99 price was announced at E3, this was generally accepted to be true -- but that's not the case, as we learned today.

Sony issued a press release today talking about Vita's social media support -- namely, it will support Foursquare along with Facebook, Twitter, and Skype. It also lists many of Vita's internal specs, including the fact that Vita sports 512MB of RAM along with 128MB of dedicated VRAM.

That should help put to rest any fears that the system had been compromised in order to be sold for $249.99. The original PlayStation Portable, by contrast, had only 32MB of RAM, while later revisions doubled that to 64MB.

Infamous 2 Gets Digital Vampires in Festival of Blood

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 12:52 PM PDT

One of the final games shown during Sony's Gamescom press conference today was Infamous 2: Festival of Blood for PlayStation 3. It's a downloadable game in the works at Sucker Punch, the developer of the first two games in the series, and sees the introduction of vampires into the mix.

Vampires swarm the city of New Marais, the main setting in Infamous 2. Cole MacGrath, freshly bitten by one of them, is left with only one night to find their leader and kill him.

Beyond that, we don't know specifics about gameplay or price. It's scheduled for release in October on PSN. From the sound of it, this is a standalone game as opposed to a downloadable content release for Infamous 2.

Resistance: Burning Skies Marks the Series' Debut on Vita

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 12:06 PM PDT

Resistance Burning Skies

The first Resistance game for Vita officially has a title and some early details.

Resistance: Burning Skies is being made specifically for Vita and features a new storyline and new environments. It focuses on a different story than that of the console games with its own timeline and main character. You play as Tom Riley, a New York fireman who carries around an axe melee weapon that's accessible at any time by tapping a virtual button located on the bottom-right of the screen.

Thanks to Vita's dual analog sticks, it looks like it will play comparably to the console games. As this is a Resistance game, guns all have alternate-fire functions; two examples given were the ability to highlight enemies with the touchscreen to launch homing attacks at them, and a grenade launcher that shoots wherever you tap on the screen.
