Crash the Rusty Hearts beta with style with enhanced keys from Massively!

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 09:00 AM PDT

Rusty Hearts is heading into closed beta on July 27th, something that participants in our last giveaway of beta keys have no doubt zeroed in on. But we've got another batch of keys to give away just before the beta launches, and this time they're coming with a little something extra. Actually, several extras.

Players who use one of the Rusty Hearts beta keys from Massively will be entitled to a special costume on the first character created -- the Night Witch costume for Angela, the Bright Uniform for Tude, or the Dark Seal outfit for Frantz. You'll also be granted a seven-day Gold Pass and a smattering of items, which should be enough to kick-start your beta experience nicely.

What's that? You already took an entry from our first giveaway? Well, not to worry -- if you grabbed a previous key to the game from us, you'll still get all of the bonuses. But if you haven't yet nabbed a spot in the beta and the latest Perfect World outing interests you, maybe now would be the time to grab a code?

GET YOUR KEY

Flameseeker Chronicles: Come one, come all. Except you.

Today's Flameseeker Chronicles is all about the current Guild Wars community: Elements I love, elements I dislike, and some I'm just unsure about.

As with any older game community, you've got a wide variety of personalities and playstyles, and seeing how they mesh with the community at large is always interesting. It would be great if everyone moved through their social circles and the general population while never conflicting or disagreeing, but ... well, we all know how often that happens on the internet.

So without further ado, follow me past the cut and let's take a look at some of the current standout groups in the Guild Wars community!

The Daily Grind: Why do you like internet drama?

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 06:00 AM PDT

Earlier this week we asked how you felt about character wipes and whether you'd continue playing in light of one. Among the interesting responses was one that opined that the drama resulting from character wipes would be quite enjoyable to experience even if said wipes would not.

As the comment was upvoted a number of times, it's fair to surmise that many folks agreed with the sentiment. It's also no secret that large portions of the internet are built on drama, and some MMORPGs thrive on it -- we're looking at you EVE Online -- as do many smaller in- and out-of-game communities. The more interesting question, and the subject of today's Daily Grind, is why.

Why does the distress of another individual (or several thousand individuals, in the case of theoretical character wipes) make for desirable entertainment? In short, why do you like internet drama?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

EVE Evolved: Learning to let go

Posted: 17 Jul 2011 04:00 PM PDT

Bombarded by the epic stories emerging from EVE Online's colossal social sandbox, thousands of MMO addicts per month give in to temptation and pick up a free trial. Most drop the trial for one reason or another, but those who continue on to a full game subscription often fall into a common trap. Some enjoy the concept of the game enough to subscribe for a month, and a portion of those get invested enough in skill plans and the mission grind to stick about for two or three months. It's rare for a new or trial player to actually get into PvP or start creating the same epic sandbox stories that drew them to the game in the first place, but this is exactly what they should be doing right from day one.

New players often spend their entire trial or first month of gameplay attempting to grapple with the enormity of EVE, absorbing as much information as they can in order to make informed decisions for themselves. It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking months of training skills and learning the basics of the game through reading or PvE will be required before you can PvP competitively or begin crafting your own epic story. I firmly believe that the real learning curve of EVE is in learning to let go of these ideas and to accept the loss of ships or items as part of the game. I believe new players need to discard their pre-conceived notions of death penalty, what skill points represent, and the idea of preparing for endgame.

In this week's EVE Evolved, I look at how EVE is actually very forgiving for new players getting into PvP immediately, I challenge the learning curve myth, and I encourage new pilots to drop themselves into EVE at the deep end.

Rise and Shiny recap: Star Legends: The Blackstar Chronicles

Posted: 17 Jul 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Spacetime Studios, makers of the current heavyweight champion of the mobile world Pocket Legends, has expanded its lineup by adding Star Legends: The Blackstar Chronicles. I was more excited about this title than almost any other that was announced this year -- and for good reason. Pocket Legends proved that a real mobile MMO complete with a persistent world, real-time chat and multiplayer interaction is possible. Over this last year the developers have added on a lot of new options and kept the game moving forward. If their new game was going to follow the same patch as Pocket Legends, then more power to Spacetime.

At the same time, would they be able to overcome or improve some of the basic issues that comes with mobile gaming? And what exactly was the goal of making a second mobile MMO if a lot of your core design would remain the same... and a lot of your players would as well?

Click past the cut and I'll tell you what I found this week!

StarCraft II: Chronicles of Fate

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 01:11 AM PDT

While not an online game, StarCraft II: Chronicles of Fate was meant to be on initially. Developed by a talented StarCraft II modder, Blizzard took notice and subsequently invited him to join them. But of course, not without the big corporate stunt of asking him to stop developing the game first. In the end, World of StarCraft (the original title) became StarCraft II: Chronicles of Fate, an upcoming mod for the StarCraft II game. It does look really awesome from the video below, so have a peek!

Warhammer 40,000 Online - Relic joins up with Vigil

Posted: 18 Jul 2011 12:23 AM PDT

The full name of the game is Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online, but it is really too long to fit into the post title. According to foreign reports, Relic Entertainment, which recently finished up on the multi-platform Warhmmer 40,000: Space Marine, has joined up with Vigil Games to work on the online title in order to speed the development process up. Both Vigil and Relic are subsidiary studios under gaming bigwig THQ. Is a release in 2012 possible? Stay tuned for more info!

Weekend Deals: Child of Eden, R.U.S.E., and Freedom Force

Posted: 15 Jul 2011 06:20 PM PDT

Child of Eden

Although Steam's summer camp sale wrapped up at the beginning of the week, Direct2Drive and Impulse (and, by extension, GameStop) have summer sales going on right now, as does Good Old Games. GOG is offering up an older title from BioShock maker Irrational Games, Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich, for just $2.39 right now. That deal will be expiring tomorrow, so you'll want to jump on it quickly if interested.

GameStop is offering up a $25 gift card with purchases of Kinect, and to go with it, several Kinect games have been discounted to $29.99. Among them is Child of Eden, a game that -- despite its poor sales in June -- is most definitely worth your money at full price, let alone for $30.

Also of note is GamersGate, which is home to discounts on a number of Tom Clancy, Assassin's Creed, and Prince of Persia titles right now. If you're looking to dive into any of those franchises, that's the place to visit this week.

Netflix Price Hike A Result Of Our Refusal To Give Up Physical Media

Posted: 17 Jul 2011 05:33 PM PDT

NetflixNetflix has been facing has been facing a ton of consumer backlash over its recently announced price hikes, and while the company has been fairly tight lipped when it comes to explaining why it was necessary, the Associated Press claims to have the answer. According to sources close to Netflix, the company simply underestimated how long it would take to convert customers over to a streaming only future, and was stuck with a business model that simply couldn't keep up with their long term goals.

This starts to make sense when you consider that Netflix dropped over $406 million into streaming rights for its online library last year, and these fees are expect to climb to over $1.4 billion next year. With such a massive investment required to continue building up its online catalogue, you can start to appreciate why it might want to split off the two business units when the cost of handling physical media continues to rise as well.

"Netflix is under enormous pressures from the content owners to write bigger and bigger checks," claims Arash Amel, research director for digital media at HIS Screen Digest. "It had to find the money from somewhere."

Given how reasonable these business realities appear to be, it makes us wonder if people would have been just as upset if Netflix had laid the blame on content rights holders, rather than simply spinning the price hike as a positive.

Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Microsoft Registers Microsoft-Sony.com

Posted: 17 Jul 2011 01:02 PM PDT

MS SonyCompanies purchase a ton of domain names defensively each year, but a recent Microsoft acquisition has the rumor mill working overtime. While one might expect the Redmond based software giant to grab hold of something like windowssucks.com (which they did), you probably wouldn't expect them to also buy up microsoft-sony.com and sony-microsoft.com

Speculation around the significance of the purchases sparked a follow up by Microsoft's Corporate Vice President of Communications, Frank Shaw, who wanted to put the issue to bed as quickly as possible.

"RE: sony/ms domain names: Sony = great MS partner. No scoop here, this was just a defensive domain hold. Let's move on to weekend, kay? :)"

While we have to assume Frank is giving us the straight goods, the timing of the registrations are somewhat interesting considering that rumors have been circling surrounding a possible partnership between the two companies on the next generation of console hardware. Of course this could also be something as mundane as a Sony Ericsson Windows Phone 7, or as Frank Shaw Claims, nothing at all.

What do you make of it?

Internet Explorer 9’s New Malware Blocking Features Leave Competition in the Dust

Posted: 17 Jul 2011 08:33 AM PDT

IE9If like most Maximum PC readers you're the first person friends and family call when looking for tech advice, you might want to think twice before suggesting they move away from Internet Explorer. According to a recent report from NSS Labs, Internet Explorer 9's dual-pronged approach to blocking malicious URLs wasn't just slightly better than the rest; it's pretty much night and day.

According to the study Internet Explorer 9 blocked 92 percent of all malware using its URL-based filters, and 100 percent with its application filtering. Internet Explorer 8 took second place by blocking 90 percent, while Chrome, Safari 5, and Firefox 4 all tied for third with a dismal 13 percent success rate.  Google, Apple, and Mozilla's three way tie can be explained by their joint use of Google's Safe Browsing system, while Opera was the only major browser to score lower on the test.

Opera currently uses a URL blocking service maintained by anti-virus maker AVG, and using this list they only managed to block 5 percent of the study's tested sites. Internet Explorer 9's application reputation feature is a great way to help less savvy users spot potentially malicious files, however even it isn't without a few quirks. False positives, even among Microsoft's own add-in's have been known to occur, but better safe than sorry.

It's worth noting that the study doesn't take every malware prevention factor into consideration such as Chrome's sandboxing feature, but it does highlight Microsoft's continued commitment to improving the security of Internet Explorer. With Chrome and Firefox duking it out in the rapid release war for consumers, Microsoft's improved security image among businesses could well cement IE's foothold in the corporate world for decades to come.

gScreen's Dual-Screen SpaceBook Laptop Finally Up for Pre-Order

Posted: 16 Jul 2011 11:55 PM PDT

While not quite in the Duke Nukem Forever league, gScreen's SpaceBook has truly earned its stripes as "delayware." The product in question is a dual-screen notebook that was first announced in 2009 but never released. It now seems that the dual-screen notebook is finally ready for market action. gScreen, the Alaska-based startup behind the SpaceBook, is now taking pre-orders for its flagship product.

Originally conceived as a 15.4-inch notebook powered by Intel's C2D processors, it now sports two 17.4-inch displays and is powered by last-gen Intel Core i5 and i7 processors. Here are the specs of the two variants currently up for pre-order:

Given its history, it's eerie that gSpace hasn't revealed when it will begin shipping the SpaceBook.  Also, what's with the first-generation Intel Core iX processors?
