Gaikai: Delivering instant MMOs to your browser

Gaikai
Imagine that you're reading up on an MMO on a site such as Massively (far-fetched, but stay with us on this). The words intrigue you and you think it might be worth checking out. You make a mental note to do so in the future -- to head over to the game's site, see if there's a trial, download it, set up an account, and give it a whirl -- but time gets away from you and none of that actually happens.

Now imagine that right after you read that article there was a single button or link. Clicking on it, a Java window opens up on top of your screen and tells you that you're now playing a trial of the game. There's no wait, no download, no lengthy form to fill out -- just click and play, right away. You go from interested to inside the game within mere seconds, your computer specs (mostly) aren't an issue, and your curiosity is immediately sated.

This isn't a far-fetched dream but the here-and-now reality. This is cloud-streaming MMOs brought to you by Gaikai. And it just might be the future of MMOs as we know it.

Seven Souls Online open beta brings open PvP, new zones

Seven Souls Online - female avatar
Free-to-play betas are something of a running joke around these parts, and it's not uncommon to see such games undergoing prolonged testing periods for months (or even years). Seven Souls Online might be breaking that mold, though, as the title is heading into open beta tomorrow after the conclusion of its closed beta that began earlier this year.

The NEOWIZ title is heavy on martial arts action, and the new beta will raise the level cap to 40 as well as introduce the new Dragonscale Valley zone, the Inferno dungeon, and open-world PvP combat. Said PvP becomes available at level 31, and you can learn more about Seven Souls -- as well as sign up for beta -- on the game's official website.

XLGAMES' Jake Song not interested in consoles

      XLGAMES founder Jake Song
ArcheAge guru Jake Song weighed in on the future of console games at Seoul's SoGang University yesterday. The XLGAMES founder and Lineage creator was part of a public discussion called "Get All the Game Maniacs Together," and he responded with an emphatic "no" when asked if he plans to develop for consoles.

"[The Korean gaming industry] was able to set up such [a] wonderful environment for online games 15 years ago. So why should we go into the outdated market while so many overseas developers are suffering from learning our online games development experience," he said.

Song explained that the console business model relies on selling third-party software, and he also hinted at the fact that mobile software is both cheaper and comparable to its console counterpart in terms of quality.

EverQuest's massive 13th anniversary and free-to-play celebration events revealed

      EverQuest
In two days, EverQuest will not only be celebrating its 13th (!) anniversary and adding a sizable update to the game, but also will be making the jump to a free-to-play hybrid model. Since this is no small potatoes, SOE has planned a huge array of events to celebrate the occasion.

The fun begins on the Plane of Knowledge, where players can enjoy 13 special quests that harken back to the greatest hits of EverQuest's history. There's also a new raid and the return of 40 events from previous anniversaries to keep everyone busy.

The update has a new feature called the Hero's Journey, which is a guidebook that will lead players through a path in EverQuest. To make things even more user-friendly, EverQuest's map system will see a major overhaul that includes the ability to show you paths to your destination.

Finally, SOE has an absolutely gigantic F2P conversion FAQ that covers nearly every conceivable question about the transition, including payment options and previous status in the game. EverQuest will go F2P starting at 3:01 am EDT on Friday, March 16th.

Coming in at just under two minutes, the video gives players a peek at a number of the features discussed in our interview plus much more. In accelerated time-lapse format, it displays a bit of the landscape, shows off some nation building, demonstrates a few combat moves (everyone loves a good roundhouse kick, right?), reveals player swimming, and showcases character customization.

Sadly for fans eager to really sink their teeth into The Repolulation, the video ends all too soon. In the immortal words of Oliver Twist, "Please, sir, I want some more."

The Daily Grind: Are MMO communities inclusive or exclusive?

        The Daily Grind
In my opinion, one of the best aspects of MMO gaming is the communities that form around these titles (and MMOs in general). The excitement and passion of these games can foster spirited discussion and a sense of belonging for those looking to connect with like minds. Friendships can and are formed, groups band together for a shared purpose, and game communities develop their own lingo and histories.

Yet these communities can also be one of the worst aspects of MMOs. They've been known to turn forums into pits of decomposing humanity, trolling and ranting with no end in sight. They can turn on an individual who doesn't know all of the mores and unwritten rules of how things are said and done. They can certainly rank a person's importance based on how long and how involved he or she's been with the game, relegating newbies to an eternal kiddie's table of condescension.

So which of these do you find to be true more often? Are MMO communities -- especially ones surrounding your current games -- accepting and inclusive to newcomers, or are they elitist and exclusive?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Rise of Dragonian Era launches with special in-game events

          RODE
Tired of being stuck in your daily commute, crawling along at 15 mph? Ever fantasize about saddling up a 10-ton dragon to soar above the rat race and deliver a final blow to that driver who cut you off? While Mgame USA hasn't perfected dragon genetics (yet), the company has released Rise of Dragonian Era to give you a virtual taste of the high life.

RODE, a free-to-play fantasy MMO, is quite big on our dragon brothers and sisters. The title has two factions, six races, and four classes from which to choose. Players will begin their journey through the game with a freshly hatched dragon pet who will accompany them through thick and thin. If that's not enough Dragonheart for you, you can also get the opportunity to fly one of these majestic beasts later on and engage in aerial warfare.

To promote RODE's launch, Mgame is handing out rewards left and right through various means. Players can earn in-game items, gift cards, and big-ticket prizes like a PS Vita just by playing for 30 minutes or more, submitting winning screenshots, leveling up, and attending special events.

Champions Online previews the new Specialization system

Tank-punching is not a specialization, but it really should be.
Whether or not you're a fan of Champions Online, you have to admit that the game gives players a lot of options in customizing a character. But apparently the designers felt a need to add another layer of customization, hence the upcoming Specialization System. A preview of the system has been posted, giving players a chance to look at the various combinations that will shape your improved abilities, whether you're playing with an Archetype or a freeform character.

Each character will gain access to three different trees to spend Specialization points; the first tree at level 10 based off of your primary Super Stat. The two subsequent trees are unlocked at level 20 and 30; these trees are predetermined for Archetypes and can be freely selected for freeform characters. Each tree offers a number of benefits for given roles, allowing a great deal of flexibility in creating a character build that suits what you like to do best.

DC Universe Online kicks off the Battle for Earth today

          Is... is Braniac a Reaper?
It's time for the main event in DC Universe Online. You're not just taking part in the Battle for Metropolis or the Battle for Gotham City or the Battle for the Local Burger Joint. No, this is the Battle for Earth, the newest DLC pack for the game, available now for all players. It's time for the war against Brainiac to reach its conclusion, and considering the setting, you can be sure the war won't be won with polite speeches and reasonable discussion.

Of course, this means a lot of new elements, such as a new powerset and a new raid. If you're not one of the Legendary players and have to choose whether or not to buy the pack, there's a new trailer available just after the cut meant to show off all the niftiness therein. And besides, can you really opt out of taking part in the battle for Earth? Your character probably lives there.

Last week's GDC came at a perfect time for Trion. The conference overlaps perfectly with RIFT's one-year anniversary, and Producer Adam Gershowitz took us through some highlights of the past year as well as the current Carnival of the Ascended content. But he also gave a peek at what's planned for the future, not only showing off the new raid zone Infernal Dawn but also talking about the team's plans for some fan-favorites like the leaderboards, mentoring, and housing.

There may be no Brad Pitt and bars of soap, but Fighters Club, an upcoming MMO from KOG Studios, has plenty of pugilistic power to make Jack a happy man. At GDC last week, Massively had a chance to see some of the action and talk to the team about its plans for beta and launch. Delve deeper into RIFT's Infernal Dawn raid with new details, screenshots

I thought dragons were supposed to DROP loot, not BE loot.
If you've ever looked at an MMO and said something like "this would be a lot better if there was lava-surfing pirate ship helmed by an amazonian captain" or "dragons would be so much cooler if they were made of gold," then you have some very particular and rather peculiar thoughts. Moreover, though, RIFT has just the instance for you.

Last week we took a video tour through the Earth Wing of RIFT's upcoming raid, Infernal Dawn. Now PC Gamer has got some more screenshots and details on the new dungeon, which pits players up against the Golden Maw, the Wanton, and their decidedly daft dragon leaders, Maelforge and Laethys. Laethys, in case we haven't mentioned it yet, is the dragon of earth whose form is composed entirely of delicious gold and precious gems. It's also worth mentioning that this is a dragon whose sacrifice of choice is a pretty boy or girl who has had his or her eyes removed and replaced with rubies. So yeah, may want to take her down ASAP, guys.

Unfortunately, we've still yet to get a look at Maelforge himself, but we're sure Mr. I-want-to-sow-the-seeds-of-discord-and-chaos-everywhere will show his face as the release of Infernal Dawn draws ever closer.

It wouldn't be EverQuest II without a dragon or two, and come April 17th, players will be able to bask in as much flamebreath as they can handle. It's on this date that SOE will release the much-anticipated Game Update 63, and with it, the dragon city of Skyshrine and the new area of the Withered Lands.

Skyshrine is a dragon citadel where good and evil dragons dwell, and as of the update's release, it will be coming under siege by mysterious forces. Only the most daring players will be brave enough to explore the nooks and crannies of this city -- and plunder it for its tempting treasure. If Skyshrine isn't enough for excitement, the Withered Lands offer plenty of challenges (over 100 quests) for those who can navigate the formerly glorious region that's been twisted by dark corruption.

Game Update 63 will also include many additional features for players. For those who have the Destiny of Velious expansion, the level cap will be raised to 92, the Skyshrine and Withered Lands areas opened for adventuring, prestige class talents added, and an awesome Drake mount dangled as a major reward. Age of Discovery expansion holders can also get their hands on a new dungeon maker theme and adventurers, tradeskill apprentices, and an elite mercenary for hire.

It's one thing to hear about how exciting an upcoming game might be, but it's something else to see it for yourself. While we were certainly impressed with what we heard and saw about MechWarrior Online from this past week's GDC, we weren't able to show you how the game actually plays. Until now, that is!

Piranha Games just released its first public video showing in-game footage of MechWarrior Online. In it, three 'Mechs -- an Atlas, a Jenner, and a Hunchback -- are duking it out in one of the game's wilderness arenas. While the video is short, there's plenty of sweet details to pick out, such as a barrage of missiles arcing toward a foe, battle-damage on enemy 'Mechs, and serious-looking warnings that pop up on the player's HUD.

MechWarrior Online is slated for a summer 2012 release. You can check out the gameplay video after the jump!

As the Star Wars: The Old Republic guild leaders lined up to get a taste of the Lost Island flashpoint, I was at BioWare studios getting my hands dirty with deeper PvE and PvP content as well as speaking with developers like Combat Designer Georg Zoeller, Lead Writer Daniel Erickson, Art Director Jeff Dobson, and Lead Designer Emmanuel Lusinchi. However, the best part was at the end of the day when I was able to speak one-on-one with Creative Director James Ohlen.

Ohlen touches nearly every aspect of the game's development. It was important to me to find out why this game is as popular as it is and what BioWare was going to do to retain its current playerbase. The first stop was the latest game update, which should hit test servers really soon.

Looking around the Guild Warsy corners of the internet, I've found some confusion about quests and dynamic events. Having this handy platform to stand on, I thought I'd try to clarify things for those who aren't really sure what standard XP-gain looks like in Guild Wars 2. If this is old news to some of you, I apologize, but please remember that not everybody's been leaping on news scraps like a ravenous puppy for the last two or three years.

With the pretty aggressive abandonment of traditional questing in Guild Wars 2's PvE, there seems to be some misinformation about what directed content will look like. It's relatively accurate to say that there are three main types: personal story quests, renown hearts, and dynamic events. Dungeons, another type of PvE content, are kind of a world unto themselves; they're approached by way of the personal storyline but evidently aren't actually necessary for progress along that line (in an effort to not force people to team up in an MMO unless they jolly well feel like it). They contain events but also static objectives. However, since they're cordoned off by way of instances, it seems pretty safe to leave them out of this conversation. Let's dig in, shall we?

Most studios would be overjoyed to have pioneered one significant advancement in video game history, but then again, most studios aren't Kesmai. While it's not a household name today, it's reasonable to say that without the heavy lifting and backbreaking coding that this company shouldered in the '80s and '90s, the MMO genre would've turned out very different indeed.

                          Last week
we met two enterprising designers, Kelton Flinn and John Taylor, who recognized that multiplayer was the name of the future and put their careers on the line to see an idea through to completion. That idea was Island of Kesmai, an ancestor of the modern MMO that used crude ASCII graphics and CompuServe's network to provide an interactive, cooperative online roleplaying experience. It wasn't the first MMO, but it was the first one published commercially, and sometimes that makes all the difference.

Flinn and Taylor's Kesmai didn't stop with being the first to bring MMOs to the big time, however. Flush with cash and success, Kesmai turned its attention to the next big multiplayer challenge: 3-D graphics and real-time combat. Unlike the fantasy land of Island of Kesmai, this title would take to the skies in aerial dogfighting and prove even more popular than the team's previous project.

Hyperspace Beacon: Making sense of Legacy

Hyperspace Beacon: Making sense of Legacy
Last week, I spent some time in Austin, Texas, at BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic studio. One of the many things I saw was the Legacy System. Although it's a great tool, it is far from the good storytelling device it's intended to be. But perhaps we can make some sense out of it.

The Legacy leveling system begins when one of your characters completes chapter one. Without revealing too many spoilers, I can say that chapter one ends in a non-planetary quest just after the main Alderaan quest line. Based on the average, your character should be level 32 when this happens (or if you're like me, you were level 30 and a friend helped you pass the final stage). At this point, you begin to gain legacy levels, which Lead Systems Designer Damion Schubert says cap at level 50 currently (that's 50 legacy levels, not 50 combat levels).

Until last week, we were uncertain what the legacy levels would actually give us. Thanks to the latest SWTOR video, we now know that the Legacy System provides rewards ranging from ship customization items to species unlocks. I won't be able to talk about all the Legacy additions in this article, but I can hit the highlights.

I Am Alive Review: A Bold Yet Frustrating Video Game Homage to The Road

                              Posted: 14 Mar 2012 06:01 AM PDT

See the child. Hear her beckon forth, surrounded by the carcasses of men harboring murderous intent. Men you ended. Their last breath whispering about the sweetness of a child, or the satisfaction of killing the interloper that you are. Save the child, who you thought was yourn, but she reveals herself to be Mei lost in the world of dust, not the daughter you left behind twelve months ago. The voice in your pocket sputters forth. The man named Henry asks, take her, take the lost child Mei, take her to the mall. Give her medicine left behind by those who never set foot in Haventown, those who drop foodstuffs and medicines from above and never look back. Not since The Event. The Event that scraped the loam off the earth and turned it into the dust that hugs and holds and kills all who wander within. The dust that chips and gnaws at your very stamina. The Event that dominates I Am Alive.

So you go, ever pressing on to find wife and child. Gone a year, but now you return, to climb and cobble and carry on. You cannot ignore Mei’s bleat for aid, but other survivors of the Event not so much as settle but subsist their meager existences in the dust covered Haventown. A man yearns cigarettes to pass on. Another man in an amusement park needs medicine to heal the leg that’s been crushed by another uncivilized man. Haventown also starves for supplies. Bottles of water, cans of fruit cocktail, a single inhaler, a handful of painkillers, these all turn into precious manna from heaven through scarcity. Give the emergency kit to the woman with the ankle sprain? What these bemoaning folk have to give, besides gratitude and perhaps a precious shotgun, is the Retry. Haventown harbors death by trial, not saves. It does not yield to the checkpoint that others call for. It takes away a Retry from your knapsack for every fall, stab, or shot you suffer. Deplete your store of Retries, and your journey resumes at the beginning of your current episode. A practice that leeches away minutes of your life. A practice that mocks you by depleting Retries and then flings you back to 45 minutes ago. What is worth more, the rat meat that can heal you, or the Retry that you get for giving rat meat to the gurgling man below? Every survivor, like the woman bound by handcuff to a bench, pleads for help while you mind debates.

                              Blacklight : Retribution

[Game website] If you have a Nvidia GeForce card like I do, the latest driver update is specially tailored for a couple of Unreal Engine 3 games, such as Perfect World’s Blacklight: Retribution. After 5 months of testing, the game is finally ready for an official launch for the North America and Europe servers on April 3, 2012.

Essentially one of the best looking Free to Play online shooters around, Blacklight: Retribution introduces the rarely seen robotic element and unique tools like the Hyper Reality Visor (HRV) which allows gamers to see enemy locations, team movements, and primary objectives to jump right into the fight. I can’t wait to give the game a shot again!

                              Time Travelers, Now Multiplatform, Detailed

                              Posted: 14 Mar 2012 02:27 AM PDT

It’s been a while since Level-5 let the public have a peek at Time Travelers, the 3DS adventure game penned by Jiro Ishii of 428 fame. Famitsu magazine let out some more details this week, and the biggest news for net-forum console warriors may be that the game’s no longer a 3DS exclusive — instead, it’ll be coming out sometime in 2012 for the 3DS, PSP, and Vita.

Time Travelers is set in Tokyo circa 2031, a place where a lot seems to be happening all at once. 18 years previous, a massive explosion — whether it was a natural phenomenon or a terror act was never determined — literally ripped a hole in the skyline which still exists today. A space elevator shoots into the sky from the harbor, and holographic advertising lines the streets. The story is centered around Mikoto Shindo, a girl with natural time-travel skills that gets involved with thwarting the plans of Skeleton, a new terrorist group that kicks off the game by hijacking a downtown bus.

The adventure, which will feature full voice work and full 3D visuals, also features the following characters:

                              - Hina Fushimi, a TV personality who chases after the terrorists in hopes of landing a job as an investigative journalist.
                              - Yuri Fukase, Mikoto’s classmate whose cold standoffishness hides a secret behind his past.
                              - Soma Kamiya, a police detective who’s force to do Skeleton’s bidding after they take his family hostage.
                              - Hyugo Shindo, a former first-class scientist who now mainly uses his name to bilk investor money for imaginary time-machine projects. (Whether he’s related to Mikoto has not been revealed.)
                              - Ressentiment, a 30-year-old college dropout who has yet to find a real job and instead patrols the streets as a would-be costumed superhero.

Check out last year’s trailer for Time Travelers, back when it was still 3DS only.

XSEED May Pave the Way For More Japanese Games on Steam With Ys

                              Posted: 13 Mar 2012 05:59 PM PDT

                              Ys: The Oath in Felghana

As great a service as Steam is, it’s not atop the list of places to go when looking for Japanese computer games. That’s not because it’s only focused on the North American market — you can find games like Football Manager that are more European-centric on there — but with exceptions like Recettear, it’s not exactly a bastion for games from the Japanese market, Japanese role-playing games in particular.

That’s what makes it a surprise to hear XSEED Games, publisher of the last several Ys PSP games in the west, plans to bring a pair of JRPGs to Steam. First up is the very good Ys: The Oath in Felghana on March 19, which will be priced at just $14.99. Following that with an unspecified price and release date will be Ys Origin.

Felghana was first made available in North America in 2010 as a PSP game courtesy of XSEED, though prior to that it had been released in Japan as a computer game. That title was a remake of Ys III, a 1989 RPG. The Steam release is based on the 2005 computer game as opposed to the PSP release and supports Achievements and Steam Cloud. The latter is a much-welcome feature; while this won’t be as portable as having the game on PSP, Steam Cloud means you can easily move your progress between your desktop and laptop.

Ys Origin, on the other hand, was originally released for computers in 2006 and, as a prequel to the original Ys, it was the first game in the series to feature neither Adol Christin nor Dogi. It has never been officially released in English, making its Steam release a big deal for fans of the franchise.

With PSP software sales not exactly at their peak, it wouldn’t make sense for Origin to be released for that platform in the west. The benefits of Steam are twofold. Turning to a form of digital distribution like Steam circumvents the risks involved with releasing a niche product at retail. And while collectors might be upset they can’t have a physical copy of the game to keep on their shelves, releasing these games digitally makes them much easier to acquire for anyone who is interested.

What will be worth watching is what happens if these games turn out to be a success on Steam. With there not being many Japanese games on the service, their addition could help to further expand its already sizeable user base. And should the games sell well, XSEED may not be the only publisher which sees potential in bringing more niche Japanese products to Steam.

XSEED positioned today’s announcement as the first two games with more to come, but if these two don’t pan out there’s presumably nothing keeping it from cutting its losses and going back to what it’s used to. If they do well, as I expect them to, XSEED may take a look at other Japanese games we haven’t seen in English before, perhaps even ones that aren’t for PC. And that’s good news for everyone.

Poor Valkyria Chronicles II Sales Mean No VCIII for the West

                              Posted: 13 Mar 2012 02:27 PM PDT

                              Valkyria Chronicles III

Don’t expect to see a localized version of Valkyria Chronicles III: Unrecorded Chronicles in North America or Europe anytime soon.

Sega’s Hiroshi Seno has revealed to GameSpot that the publisher has no plans to create an English version of the RPG for western markets. That’s thanks to the overall lack of popularity of the PlayStation Portable (which the second and third VC games were made for) in those regions and the poor sales of the second game.

Valkyria Chronicles II was released last August to fairly strong reviews. Its predecessor wasn’t a huge seller on PlayStation 3 in North America but was much beloved by those who did play it. A fan campaign did manage to lead to a sizable jump in sales, though not enough to convince Sega to create another console title.

                              Valkyria Chronicles III

Valkyria III was rumored after URL registration were discovered last year. Sega teased it was coming and then accidentally confirmed it ahead of the official announcement last September. It was released in Japan this past January, earning a 36 (of 40) score from Famitsu.

Seno said Sega may release a downloadable version of VC for Vita, but again, that does fans in the west no good if the game isn’t localized. Knowing fans of the series — and the fan campaign that ensued with the first game is the perfect example of this — it wouldn’t be surprising to see an attempt to change Sega’s mind.

[Pre-order page] The day has finally arrived, not the game’s launch, but for me to finally allow ArenaNet to take my money. Well, still about a month away, but pre-purchase for Guild Wars 2 will happen on 10th April 2012. After discussing for weeks and months with my brother on what classes we will play, we can finally put some theories into action. Better start saving up now, kids!

Zenimax And Mojang Reach 'Scrolls' Settlement

Zenimax Media, umbrella company for Bethesda Softworks and owner of the 'Elder Scrolls' trademark, has reached a settlement with Minecraft creator Mojang over the ownership of the 'Scrolls' trademark.

According to the agreement, 'Scrolls' will be owned solely by Zenimax Media while the 'Scrolls' trademark will be licensed to Mojang for exclusive use in it's existing digital card game.

"We are pleased to have settled this matter with Mojang amicably," said Robert Altman, Chairman and CEO of ZeniMax in an official press release. "The Elder Scrolls is an important brand to us, and with this settlement we were able to protect our valuable property rights while allowing Mojang to release their digital card game under the name they preferred."

Mojang meanwhile, seems equally upbeat about the amicable settlement," We have settled the lawsuit over Scrolls and Mojang and Bethesda are friends again… For us this was never about a trade mark but being able to use Scrolls as the name of our game which we can – Yey."
