I Am Alive Review: A Bold Yet Frustrating Video Game Homage to The Road Posted: 14 Mar 2012 06:01 AM PDT See the child. Hear her beckon forth, surrounded by the carcasses of men harboring murderous intent. Men you ended. Their last breath whispering about the sweetness of a child, or the satisfaction of killing the interloper that you are. Save the child, who you thought was yourn, but she reveals herself to be Mei lost in the world of dust, not the daughter you left behind twelve months ago. The voice in your pocket sputters forth. The man named Henry asks, take her, take the lost child Mei, take her to the mall. Give her medicine left behind by those who never set foot in Haventown, those who drop foodstuffs and medicines from above and never look back. Not since The Event. The Event that scraped the loam off the earth and turned it into the dust that hugs and holds and kills all who wander within. The dust that chips and gnaws at your very stamina. The Event that dominates I Am Alive. So you go, ever pressing on to find wife and child. Gone a year, but now you return, to climb and cobble and carry on. You cannot ignore Mei’s bleat for aid, but other survivors of the Event not so much as settle but subsist their meager existences in the dust covered Haventown. A man yearns cigarettes to pass on. Another man in an amusement park needs medicine to heal the leg that’s been crushed by another uncivilized man. Haventown also starves for supplies. Bottles of water, cans of fruit cocktail, a single inhaler, a handful of painkillers, these all turn into precious manna from heaven through scarcity. Give the emergency kit to the woman with the ankle sprain? What these bemoaning folk have to give, besides gratitude and perhaps a precious shotgun, is the Retry. Haventown harbors death by trial, not saves. It does not yield to the checkpoint that others call for. It takes away a Retry from your knapsack for every fall, stab, or shot you suffer. Deplete your store of Retries, and your journey resumes at the beginning of your current episode. A practice that leeches away minutes of your life. A practice that mocks you by depleting Retries and then flings you back to 45 minutes ago. What is worth more, the rat meat that can heal you, or the Retry that you get for giving rat meat to the gurgling man below? Every survivor, like the woman bound by handcuff to a bench, pleads for help while you mind debates. Essentially one of the best looking Free to Play online shooters around, Blacklight: Retribution introduces the rarely seen robotic element and unique tools like the Hyper Reality Visor (HRV) which allows gamers to see enemy locations, team movements, and primary objectives to jump right into the fight. I can’t wait to give the game a shot again! Posted by: admin in Gaming News Thank you for Visiting Gameforumer.com, Hope you enjoyed the stay with us. |
Time Travelers, Now Multiplatform, Detailed Posted: 14 Mar 2012 02:27 AM PDT
It’s been a while since Level-5 let the public have a peek at Time Travelers, the 3DS adventure game penned by Jiro Ishii of 428 fame. Famitsu magazine let out some more details this week, and the biggest news for net-forum console warriors may be that the game’s no longer a 3DS exclusive — instead, it’ll be coming out sometime in 2012 for the 3DS, PSP, and Vita. Time Travelers is set in Tokyo circa 2031, a place where a lot seems to be happening all at once. 18 years previous, a massive explosion — whether it was a natural phenomenon or a terror act was never determined — literally ripped a hole in the skyline which still exists today. A space elevator shoots into the sky from the harbor, and holographic advertising lines the streets. The story is centered around Mikoto Shindo, a girl with natural time-travel skills that gets involved with thwarting the plans of Skeleton, a new terrorist group that kicks off the game by hijacking a downtown bus. The adventure, which will feature full voice work and full 3D visuals, also features the following characters: - Hina Fushimi, a TV personality who chases after the terrorists in hopes of landing a job as an investigative journalist. Check out last year’s trailer for Time Travelers, back when it was still 3DS only. Posted by: admin in Gaming News Thank you for Visiting Gameforumer.com, Hope you enjoyed the stay with us. |
XSEED May Pave the Way For More Japanese Games on Steam With Ys Posted: 13 Mar 2012 05:59 PM PDT
As great a service as Steam is, it’s not atop the list of places to go when looking for Japanese computer games. That’s not because it’s only focused on the North American market — you can find games like Football Manager that are more European-centric on there — but with exceptions like Recettear, it’s not exactly a bastion for games from the Japanese market, Japanese role-playing games in particular. That’s what makes it a surprise to hear XSEED Games, publisher of the last several Ys PSP games in the west, plans to bring a pair of JRPGs to Steam. First up is the very good Ys: The Oath in Felghana on March 19, which will be priced at just $14.99. Following that with an unspecified price and release date will be Ys Origin. Felghana was first made available in North America in 2010 as a PSP game courtesy of XSEED, though prior to that it had been released in Japan as a computer game. That title was a remake of Ys III, a 1989 RPG. The Steam release is based on the 2005 computer game as opposed to the PSP release and supports Achievements and Steam Cloud. The latter is a much-welcome feature; while this won’t be as portable as having the game on PSP, Steam Cloud means you can easily move your progress between your desktop and laptop. Ys Origin, on the other hand, was originally released for computers in 2006 and, as a prequel to the original Ys, it was the first game in the series to feature neither Adol Christin nor Dogi. It has never been officially released in English, making its Steam release a big deal for fans of the franchise. With PSP software sales not exactly at their peak, it wouldn’t make sense for Origin to be released for that platform in the west. The benefits of Steam are twofold. Turning to a form of digital distribution like Steam circumvents the risks involved with releasing a niche product at retail. And while collectors might be upset they can’t have a physical copy of the game to keep on their shelves, releasing these games digitally makes them much easier to acquire for anyone who is interested. What will be worth watching is what happens if these games turn out to be a success on Steam. With there not being many Japanese games on the service, their addition could help to further expand its already sizeable user base. And should the games sell well, XSEED may not be the only publisher which sees potential in bringing more niche Japanese products to Steam. XSEED positioned today’s announcement as the first two games with more to come, but if these two don’t pan out there’s presumably nothing keeping it from cutting its losses and going back to what it’s used to. If they do well, as I expect them to, XSEED may take a look at other Japanese games we haven’t seen in English before, perhaps even ones that aren’t for PC. And that’s good news for everyone. Poor Valkyria Chronicles II Sales Mean No VCIII for the West Posted: 13 Mar 2012 02:27 PM PDT Sega’s Hiroshi Seno has revealed to GameSpot that the publisher has no plans to create an English version of the RPG for western markets. That’s thanks to the overall lack of popularity of the PlayStation Portable (which the second and third VC games were made for) in those regions and the poor sales of the second game. Valkyria Chronicles II was released last August to fairly strong reviews. Its predecessor wasn’t a huge seller on PlayStation 3 in North America but was much beloved by those who did play it. A fan campaign did manage to lead to a sizable jump in sales, though not enough to convince Sega to create another console title. Valkyria III was rumored after URL registration were discovered last year. Sega teased it was coming and then accidentally confirmed it ahead of the official announcement last September. It was released in Japan this past January, earning a 36 (of 40) score from Famitsu. Seno said Sega may release a downloadable version of VC for Vita, but again, that does fans in the west no good if the game isn’t localized. Knowing fans of the series — and the fan campaign that ensued with the first game is the perfect example of this — it wouldn’t be surprising to see an attempt to change Sega’s mind. Zenimax And Mojang Reach ‘Scrolls’ Settlement Posted: 13 Mar 2012 11:57 AM PDT Zenimax Media, umbrella company for Bethesda Softworks and owner of the 'Elder Scrolls' trademark, has reached a settlement with Minecraft creator Mojang over the ownership of the 'Scrolls' trademark. According to the agreement, 'Scrolls' will be owned solely by Zenimax Media while the 'Scrolls' trademark will be licensed to Mojang for exclusive use in it's existing digital card game. "We are pleased to have settled this matter with Mojang amicably," said Robert Altman, Chairman and CEO of ZeniMax in an official press release. "The Elder Scrolls is an important brand to us, and with this settlement we were able to protect our valuable property rights while allowing Mojang to release their digital card game under the name they preferred." Mojang meanwhile, seems equally upbeat about the amicable settlement," We have settled the lawsuit over Scrolls and Mojang and Bethesda are friends again… For us this was never about a trade mark but being able to use Scrolls as the name of our game which we can – Yey."
