China last year became the world leader in international patent filings, unseating the United States which had held the top spot for more than four decades, the UN said Tuesday.
A record 265,800 international patent applications were filed last year, a hike of 5.2% from 2018, the World Intellectual Property Organisation said in its annual report.
WIPO's complex system of registering international patents involves multiple categories.
In the main category – the Patent Cooperation Treaty, or PCT – China topped the ranking for the first time, with 58,990 applications.
The president also blasted the U.N. agency's early recommendations for countering the coronavirus.
President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced plans to put a hold on U.S. funding for the World Health Organization, accusing the United Nations specialized agency of being "very China centric" and criticizing its early guidance aimed at countering the international spread of the coronavirus.
"We're going to put a hold on money spent to the WHO. We're going to put a very powerful hold on it and we're going to see," Trump said at the outset of a coronavirus task force briefing at the White House.

LONDON (Reuters) - The British government declined on Tuesday to say who had responsibility for the United Kingdom's nuclear codes while Prime Minister Boris Johnson is treated in intensive care for COVID-19 complications.
When asked by the BBC if Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab had been handed the nuclear codes while Johnson receives treatment, Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove said: "There are well developed protocols which are in place."
"I just really cannot talk about national security issues," Gove said.
The United Kingdom is one of the world's five official nuclear weapon states and has four nuclear submarines armed with Trident II D5 ballistic missiles loaded with nuclear warheads. The United Kingdom has a stockpile of about 215 nuclear warheads, though about 120 are operationally available.

Modly submitted his resignation letter to Esper on Tuesday after meeting with his boss one-on-one, a defense official with knowledge of the meeting said.

The WHO has confirmed more than 77,000 cases and nearly 4,000 deaths in its Eastern Mediterranean region, which includes Pakistan, Afghanistan, Somalia and Djibouti, as well as Middle Eastern states, but does not include Turkey.
About 78% of those cases are in Iran, with all other countries having fewer than 4,000 cases, and most fewer than 1,000, said Richard Brennan, the WHO's regional emergency director.

Forced to issue a statement to quash rampant speculation, the PM's spokesman said he was 'stable overnight and remains in good spirits', having received 'standard oxygen treatment'.

The coronavirus and lockdown-induced recession have fueled huge distress in India. A third connected problem has been the crash in stock markets. A fourth misfortune, an extension of the third, is now threatened by loan defaults by developing countries that could snowball into a further panicky exit of dollars from all emerging markets, including India.The Sensex is already down from almost 40,000 to 27,000. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) today are the biggest shareholders of many Sensex companies. HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank are owned mainly by FPIs, even though they are called Indian banks. But in March alone, FPIs were net sellers of $16.5 billion of shares, against $9 billion in the entire 2008 crisis.Is the crisis about to peak, and will we soon return on the path to normality? Wall Street analysts predict a sharp economic recovery from the current recession in the second half of 2020. Indian optimists hope that FPIs will soon come back and the Sensex will boom again. The optimists argue that bond yields are close to zero in advanced countries. So global money will have to come back to countries like India, which promise higher yields since they will grow faster than the advanced countries.Maybe, but those days may be a long way off. Markets yo-yo with alternate bouts of greed and fear. Some FPI money will doubtless come back for bottom-fishing. But the big risk is another round of massive FPI outflows as part of a panicky exit from all emerging markets induced by a series of defaults. Lebanon has just defaulted for the first time ever. In the 1950s, it seemed the brightest economic star in Asia, but was then devastated by a civil war that still continues in a sort of equilibrium. Despite that, Lebanon never defaulted on its foreign debt -- until now. Covid-19 has finally done what even civil war could not.Argentina has defaulted too, on dollar debt subject to adjudication within the country. It has massive debts running into billions of dollars under international judicial jurisdiction, which presumably will suffer default too. Argentina enjoyed a spell of fast growth in the 2000s that enabled it to look so creditworthy that in 2017 it could actually sell 100-year dollar bonds to global buyers. Today, it is comprehensively bust.Venezuela cannot pay its debts, but is a special case since it has been the target of US sanctions. Ecuador is also on the verge of default. Venezuela and Ecuador are oil exporters, and the collapse of the price of oil from $65 a barrel a few months ago to under $30 a barrel today means their main source of tax revenue and foreign exchange has evaporated. The same story is going to be repeated in other oil-exporting countries, and can devastate smaller exporters in Africa. Mexico, a major oil exporter, has seen its currency sink 20% this year.The world is in a deep recession and could take over a year to revive to pre-crisis levels. The virus has hit Asian countries whose exports depend on global value chains and have suffered from China's lockdowns. But a bigger problem has been a fall in all commodity prices, which are the staple exports of many developing countries. These are suffering a double whammy of a crash in exports even as dollars are yanked out of their economies by panicky FPIs. India and China are net commodity importers, and will gain from declining prices. But most developing countries will suffer. Just a few years ago, BRICS -- Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa -- were touted as the next major global powers. They even set up a BRICS Bank to finance global projects. Of the five members, three -- Brazil, Russia and South Africa --have seen their currencies sink 20% in recent weeks. They will want to burrow rather than lend through the BRICS Bank.Defaults by emerging markets are set to snowball. United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad) has just come out with a report saying developing countries urgently need debt cancellation of $1 trillion this year; another clean gift of $1 trillion through a new issue of special drawing rights by the International Monetary Fund (IMF); and an additional $500 billion from rich countries as a new sort of Marshall Aid. Alas, even the richest countries are focusing on reviving their own stricken economies.India is in a relatively good position to withstanding the hurricane about to strike defaulting and other emerging markets. Its current account deficit is very low and may go to zero because of the crash in oil prices (which may, however, be offset partly by a decline in remittances from the Gulf). Inflation is under control, save for vegetable prices. The fiscal deficit is going to shoot up, but that is happening across the world and is not causing inflation.RBI will monetise most of the fiscal deficit, so interest rates will not shoot up and the financial sector should have enough liquidity. But not even all this will give India immunity. Prepare for stormy days ahead.

Shares of Avenue Supermarts, which contribute nearly all of the wealth to Damani's net worth, have advanced 18% this year.Damani, who was raised in a one-room apartment in a Mumbai tenement block, has seen his wealth swell at a time when a stocks rout has shaved more than 32% off the net worth of his billionaire compatriots Mukesh Ambani and Uday Kotak on fears that the pandemic will gut economic growth. Damani's supermarket chain, known for its thrifty cost structure, gained from panic buying of household essentials after India decided to place its 1.3 billion people under a three-week lockdown last month.The low-cost model will hold Avenue Supermarts' D-Mart stores in good stead even after the panic hoarding for staples cools down once the lockdown is lifted. The supermarket chain makes money by giving customers fewer choices of no-frills products, negotiating hard with its vendors and avoiding any advertising expense.D-Mart's rivals have not benefited as much under the same circumstances. Future Group, which runs India's second-largest retail chain by revenue and has over 1,300 stores across the country, saw shares of its publicly-traded retail unit nosedive 80% this year amid mounting debt woes.Avenue Supermarts' and Damani's prospects are bright as long as the supply chain for India's fast-moving consumer goods are not disrupted. With trucks coming to a near-standstill, any extension of the lockdown can potentially empty out D-Mart's shelves.For now, Damani's stores are managing to refill their racks.There are very few listed retailers that are better placed than Avenue Supermarts to offer "a hedge in this crisis," said Vikraman P.N. of Finnoviti Consulting Pvt. "They cater to the rising demand for consumer staples and they have used their cash flows over the years to invest in a robust supply chain."
The average age of 125 people who had died in India from Covid-19 till Monday was 60 years, data collated by TOI from states shows. While this is significantly lower than in countries such as Italy, where the average is closer to 80, this is due to a younger population in India than in most Western countries. Age-wise case fatality rates (deaths as a percentage of confirmed cases) worked out on the basis of official data for 4,097 cases and 109 deaths put out on Monday confirm this.Against an overall CFR of 2.7%, the figure for those below 40 years was 0.4%. It was 2.4% for those between 50 and 60, and 8.9% for those over 60. This is in line with the trend in other countries. 75037823The data collated by TOI also showed that the most common co-morbidities among those who died of Covid-19 so far were diabetes and hypertension, and in a large number of cases both conditions were present together. This too is not unlike the rest of the world though there are variations. In China, for instance, the death rate was highest among people with heart diseases or those with lung diseases, followed by diabetes and hypertension.Information on co-morbidities was available for 86 people who died. This showed that more than half of them (56%) were diabetic and almost half (47%) had hypertension. Over a third of the 86 had both diabetes and hypertension. One in five suffered from asthma or lung disease. Only 16% had cardiac disease along with diabetes and/or hypertension. Renal disease too was reported in several of those who died.The data does not record how severely diabetic or hypertensive the person was or how serious the lung disease was. It is not possible to say, therefore, how much of a bearing the extent of pre-existing morbidities had on the probability of death.More than 40% of the cases examined had two pre-existing disease conditions, while over 17% had more than three co-morbidities. Only about a third of those who died (35%) had just one co-morbidity.The fact that diabetes emerged as the leading co-morbidity among those felled by the disease in India is significant given the fact that an estimated 9.4% of the country is diabetic — 12% of the urban population and nearly 8% of rural — according to an ICMR study on prevalence of diabetes and hypertension. The same study also showed that up to 30% of the population — 33% in urban and 28% in rural had higher than normal blood pressure levels.While a combination of diabetes and hypertension is bad enough as a risk factor, what makes it worse is that this risk increases with age. The prevalence of hypertension was over 60% in the above 55 years age group and that for diabetes was almost 30% in the same age group.
New Delhi: India relaxed a ban on exports of paracetamol and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), both used in Covid-19 therapies, and placed them in the licensed category. US President Donald Trump had threatened India with retaliation if it rejected his country's demand for the supply of hydroxychloroquine, which he sees as key to battling the infection. Doctors and scientists are divided over the efficacy of the drug, used to treat malaria and auto-immune diseases, in combating Covid-19. The move to ease the export ban followed the recommendation of an expert panel, said officials with knowledge of the matter. The panel led by drug pricing regulator Shubhra Singh had been tasked with assessing the capability and the manufacturing capacity of domestic pharmaceutical companies. ET had reported on Monday that the ban was about to be lifted."The decision was taken only after the panel got enough evidence from the companies that we have enough stocks available in the country," said one of the persons. India is one of the biggest manufacturers of the drug.Apart from the US, about 30 countries, including South Asian neighbours and key global partners in West Asia, had asked India to lift the ban on hydroxychloroquine exports.Trump had asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday to free up exports of the drug that he sees as a Covid-19 game changer.75038794Ipca, Zydus Main Players"For many years, they've taken advantage of the United States on trade," Trump had told reporters at the White House. Why wouldn't there be?"The foreign ministry said India will license the medicines in appropriate quantities to neighbouring countries and nations that have been badly hit by the pandemic."In view of the humanitarian aspects of the pandemic, it has been decided that India would licence paracetamol and HCQ in appropriate quantities to all our neighbouring countries who are dependent on our capabilities," said MEA spokesperson Anurag Srivastava. "We will also be supplying these essential drugs to some nations who have been particularly badly affected by the pandemic.""MEA will process the applications and the department of pharmaceuticals would assess those based on the supply and requirement in India. The commerce department will then direct customs officials to release those consignments for export," said an official.Ipca and Zydus are the two major producers of hydroxychloroquine in India."India has enough capacity and capability to cater to domestic and exports demand," said Ashok Madan, executive director, Indian Drug Manufacturers' Association. Trade experts said the US should reciprocate."This shows how asymmetrical the trade relation is," said one of them. "India is doing a favour by supplying these medicines and must get something in return."Almost 30% of India's pharmaceutical exports are to North America, 16% to Europe and 17% to Africa.
On expected lines, Indian equity market staged a strong relief rally on Tuesday. NSE Nifty made a healthy start to the day and continued to add gains as the session progressed. The benchmark index finally settled with a massive gain of 708.40 points or 8.76 per cent at 8,792.20.The market has now started to show initial signs of a short term bottom near the 7,800 level. However, Nifty still needs to confirm it by moving past and sustaining above the 9,050 level. The behaviour of the index against this level would be extremely crucial to watch out for in the coming days.Volatility Index or India VIX cooled down further by 6.33 per cent to 51.80.Wednesday's session is likely to see a positive start and the extension of the technical pullback. The 8,885 and 9,000 levels will act as resistance, while the support may come in at 8,710 and 8,590.The Relative Strength Index (RSI) on the daily chart stood at 43.44 and marked a fresh 14-period high, which is bullish. The indicator remained neutral, showing no divergence against the price.75034816The daily MACD was bullish and traded above its signal line. A rising window was formed on the candles. This occurs due to a gap and usually results in a continuation of the upmove.As per pattern analysis, after making a low below 7,800, Nifty has attempted to confirm the temporary bottom by marking a higher bottom near 8,050. For the bottom to get confirmed, the index now will have to mark a higher top by moving past the 9,050 level and staying above this zone.Given the technical setup, we would strongly recommend traders to avoid shorts at current levels. While selective purchases can be made, profits should be vigilantly protected near the 9,000-9,050 zone. How are you reading into the pharma rally that we are witnessing in trade today? Of course there is the news of the government easing the export of 24 pharma ingredients; most of these stocks are very upbeat in today's trading session. Are you encouraged by this move?In general, pharma is probably one of the few things that are still operational from a drug perspective all over the world. So yes, of course, it is a good thing but to a large extent, it is difficult to get goods out; the supply chain is a little broken down but these stocks have also been beaten up for like months and years now. So hopefully, we will see a little bit of ease up in foreign regulators clamping down on silly unnecessary FDA issues; so hopefully that attitude will change and this might mean something longer term. But right now, the rally is all about liquidity. We are seeing money come into everything. We are seeing stocks up 20% for no reason at all. So in that context, I do not know whether to attribute this move to a general change in fundamentals or whether it is just the fact that we have gotten so badly down that just getting things back to normal will take all stocks up by a tremendous amount. So I cannot comment on today's move but hopefully the fundamentals are improving.What is your take on banks because we are seeing quite a bit of encouraging commentary from a lot of these private sector banks. There has been healthy deposit growth in the quarter gone by and you are seeing a lot of these private sector banks regaining some lost ground. Do you believe that the picture in Q4 could look fairly encouraging for most of these banks or you are not buying into this commentary?We have been buying the last few weeks. In fact, we intensified buying in private banks in the last two months and last month or so. I believe that the fact that the world is coming to an end is probably a little bit too much. India will recover whether from the economic or the medical crisis that seems to be upon us and we will do it very fast. India and the whole world is working towards the problem and economically, there will be stimulus. All of this will affect our banking sector positively; it will initially be negative but eventually it will be positive because the way a country like ours recovers is through its banks itself. So I do not see necessarily there being a huge amount of challenge. There may be some temporary issues in some banks but I feel overall, the banking system is safe. I have been saying that about YES Bank also; deposits were safe. So if the banking system does not collapse, the private banking sector will come back in a big way in the next few years. Remember, these banks were highly valued; so they are just coming back to normal valuation metrics. So that makes them a lot easier to buy now versus say two months ago.What kind of an outlook do you have when it comes to these real estate stocks that have been quite badly beaten out of shape?So my view is, there is and there always has been demand for low cost housing. So anything that is Rs 20 lakh, Rs 25 lakhs forever has seen demand. It will continue to see demand. There is a huge amount of demand for these kinds of houses; in Bombay just multiply everything by 2 because people there seem to be richer but everywhere else, the 20-25 lakh price point is actually quite attractive. Deflation in commodity price which may happen will actually encourage the building of such houses. The problem is, all our real estate developers have gone and built expensive housing, which is beyond Rs 1 crore, Rs 75 lakhs, and Rs 1.5 crore and that is where the maximum inventory is. That inventory for the next five years is going to have trouble selling. We are going to have a lot more builders construct houses in the lower end; so there will be a dichotomy that lower-end builders will make money and the lower-end housing loan lenders will benefit. The guys who lend to the rich people or richer housing are going to hurt a lot for a long time. So I am not very positive on expensive real estate although I have made my mistakes in that sector as well.How are you viewing the prospects for the telecom sector because recent brokerages seem to suggest that Bharti is among the top picks and while they are fairly bullish in terms of the company gaining market share vis-Ã -vis Vodafone Idea, they have cut the revenue as well as the EBITDA quite significantly. So where do you stand when it comes to telecom? Is it a basket that you would approach selectively? Is it something that you would avoid completely?We are quite long in both the big players here; Reliance and Bharti Airtel. I think the reason is very simple. They are a gateway to pretty much everything happening on the tech side of things in terms of internet access, in terms of work from home and they are the biggest players in the industry. Both of them have some layer of content integration into their networks. They also have reach; so if you consider the fact that Bharti is now available at what prices of 2008, 2007 and the debt cost that it has are likely to come down because of lowering of interest rates, there is also likely to be more revenue because of Idea not performing quite as well and because all those customers will migrate to either Airtel or to Jio. I think in the longer term this has a tremendous amount of scope. They need to reduce their data rate and over time that will come down. But if you look at it, they have increased their prices recently and not seen too much damage in terms of subscriber counts. You can also see the quality of their networks even though people are working from home and there must be a lot more pressure on the networks; it does not seem to have given way completely in any meaningful way across the country. We have a lot of scope here and hopefully whenever 5G comes, auctions will be less expensive for them in comparison to what other 4G auctions have been. So I am positive that this is a sector that will do well. What about Bajaj Finance and Bajaj Finserv in particular. Bajaj Finance was once heralded as darlings of the stock market and now of course, it is a grim and cautious outlook that is unwarranted at a time like this. They have clocked in the slowest AUM growth in the last 12 quarters and they have spoken about protecting the balance sheet, which is the top priority as demand has been hit quite severely. What is the sense that you are getting on both of these names? Do you think that right now would be a good time to even nibble in further into these names?Bajaj Finance is the main thing; Bajaj Finserv is just like the holding company of it. So the concall yesterday was quite informative. The company is aware that there are a lot of unknowns right now. We do not know how long the lockdown is going to last. The optimistic projection is that if the lockdown lasts just till April 14, then perhaps by October, they will get back to normalcy. Now if you can forgive two quarters and in the best case three or maybe a little more than that in the worst case, then the company should come out ahead in the longer term. It is valued at a much better rate now; not that it is cheap, it is still expensive. But I believe in the longer term if growth visibility continues and when India comes out of this, they are still going to need credit. If it appears at least that the debt markets continue to price Bajaj Finance debt at a very low price; their short-term debt is trading less than 6%; so there is no credit issue that the debt markets are seeing and debt markets are usually better informed than equity markets in general. So I feel there is no problem if you can wait for a year or two for the stock to recover. If you cannot, then of course, this is not the best time to speculate on the short term for the stock. If you are patient, this is a good time to buy that stock but you should spread your investment across the financial sector; the banks will probably recover earlier, Bajaj Finance will probably recover next and the smaller NBFCs will probably recover last. So I still like it and as a disclosure, we are holding it in the PMS. But I do not think it is for the faint hearted; so I would not do it as a speculation thing. I really like the company and the way they communicate and their operations from a long term perspective.
Pune: NortonLifeLock today released findings from its annual Cyber Safety Insights Report which showed that nearly 4 in 10 respondents in India (39 percent ) have experienced identity theft, with 10 percent impacted in the past year alone. It also found that while 61 percent of respondents feel well-protected against ID theft but 63 percent would have no idea what to do in case of an identity theft, and more than three-quarters (79 percent ) wish they had more information on what to do if it were to happen.The research was conducted online by The Harris Poll on behalf of NortonLifeLock among 10,063 adults (aged 18+) in 10 countries, including India.It found that identity theft and cybercrime appear to be more common among men than women (44 percent vs 33 percent ID theft, 84 percent vs. 76 percent cybercrime), and among younger adults (18-39 years) compared to older adults (40+ years) (41 percent vs. 22 percent ID theft, 81 percent vs. 73 percent cybercrime). 66 percent respondents said that had experienced a cybercrime in the past 12 months."Headlines of identity theft, data breaches and online fraud are on the rise and it is crucial that we understand the seriousness of protecting personal information," said Ritesh Chopra, Country Director, NortonLifeLock, India. "While the report suggests Indian consumers are more concerned about the misuse of personal information, amongst those of other countries, it also reveals that they are complacent about sharing their data if they get something in return."Growing concern over privacy Over 80 percent Indian respondents reported being more alarmed than ever about their privacy, the highest of all 10 countries surveyed by far (67 percent global average). The key concerns were selling of sensitive personal information to third parties and it being used in decision-making processes without their consent (41 percent ) and their personal information being exposed in a data breach and compromised by cyber criminals (40 percent ). They are also most proactive when it comes to protecting their privacy, with 74 percent having chosen not to download an app or use a service because of its privacy policy. They are also more likely to have opted against purchasing a smart home device over privacy or security concerns (63 percent vs. 37 percent global average). Indian respondents are far more likely than consumers globally to report the following situations are acceptable:A company selling their online search or shopping history to other companies, so they'll get more relevant advertisements (52 percent vs. 25 percent global average)A technology device company allowing its employees to listen to their voice commands via voice assistants to improve products and services (66 percent vs. 34 percent global average)A social media company using photos or videos they post on social media to help train their artificial intelligence tech to protect their users from seeing violent or inappropriate images (57 percent vs. 35 percent global average)
By Anirban NagIndia's unemployment rate could have climbed to more than 20% as the economy lost jobs after a nationwide lockdown took effect in the last week of March, according to a survey by the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy Pvt.The jobless rate was 23.4% for the week ended April 5 based on a sample size of 9,429 observations, Mahesh Vyas, the chief executive officer of CMIE, wrote. The private sector research group relied on telephonic interviews after suspending their regular survey in the last week of March.For the full month of March, CMIE estimated the jobless rate to be 8.7% compared with 7.8% in February."Labour statistics for March 2020 are worrisome," Vyas said. "These are very big variations and are subject to the usual sampling errors. It, therefore, may not be very wise to focus on the magnitude of those movements but on the certainty of the movements."It is evident that there was a significant fall in employment and there is a simultaneous significant increase in unemployment in March 2020, according to CMIE, whose usual sample size for monthly estimates is more than 117,000 individuals.The government publishes unemployment data every year. The last report, released in 2019, put the unemployment rate at a 45-year high of 6.1%.

The given bar chart illustrates the percentage of Canadians actively participating in the ten most popular sports in 1998 and 2005. It is obvious that Golf and Ice hockey were the most common sports in Canada, and the participation rates of most sports declined during the period shown.
As can be seen from the graph, in 1998, Golf was the sport that had the highest participation rate with about 22%, followed by Ice hockey with approximately 18%. However, in 2005, these figures fell to just over 20% and about 17.5%, respectively. In 1998, the percentage of Canadians taking part in Baseball was 17%, which is the third biggest, but this rate dropped significantly by some 10% in 2005.
In addition, in 2005, the proportion of people frequently joining in Tennis, Cycling, Downhill/alpine skiing, Volleyball, Basketball was around 8%, and there were slight decreases of 1 to 2 % in the participation rates of these sports in 2005. Similarly, the figure for swimming also went down from 13% to just over 10%. Finally, soccer was the only sport that witnessed a slight increase from about 9% to 10%.
IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic
In task 2 of IELTS writing, the examiner will be giving you a topic, and it may be based on anything, you can give your opinion if they ask you to. First, you need to understand the topic given properly and write the essay of about 250 words. Band 8.0 Sample Essay:
Traveling abroad certainly exerts several positive influences on tourists as well as the host country. Although there are still drawbacks of international travel, I think its values are more significant.
On the one hand, the downsides of welcoming foreign visitors are varied. Regarding tourists themselves, travel expenses in famous tourist destinations, Venice for example, are expensive, and there are many complicated and tedious prerequisite procedures such as visa application or plane ticket reservation. As for the countries that play host to international tourists, the rise in costs of living may lay much pressure on local people and be a detriment to domestic travel. This is because the growth in the number of tourists from abroad would encourage the costs of hotel rooms and other services to increase. People in the neighborhood and domestic visitors would suffer in comparison.
On the other hand, I suppose the benefits of international travel would eclipse those analyzed disadvantages. First, travelers can have a number of fascinating experiences of exotic cuisine and culture, and they get to see places they have not seen before. A typical example of this is when tourists from other countries come to Vietnam, they would have the opportunity to use chopsticks, enjoy traditional meals and go sightseeing in the countryside. Second, the increased number of foreign people coming to visit another country would evidently enhance tourism industries, contributing greatly to the wealth of that country. If tourists enjoy their trips, they will recommend the destination to their friends or perhaps they will come back in the future.
In conclusion, it appears to me that the merits of international tourism are more notable than its drawbacks.
Band 7.0 Sample 2:
As international travel becomes cheaper, more and more people travel and more countries open their doors to increasing numbers of tourists. Some people are of the opinion that international travel does more harm than good whilst others are in favor of the opposite view. From my viewpoint, I prefer the latter opinion for the following reasons.
First and foremost, it is an undeniable fact that international travel goes hand in hand with economic growth since it not only creates millions of jobs but also elevates the tourist industry as well. The most prime example is most countries which have outstanding tourist attractions often has its economic status increased 10% in a few years in comparison with countries which don’t have ones since international travel brings about huge gross profit for travel agencies. Moreover, international travel recruits a huge amount of employees every year and often ensures a high income which results in a decrease in the unemployment rate. In other words, international travel has a great contribution to the economic growth in various aspects. For instance, an adequate fishing trade circulation may catch the eye of a French businessman who is looking for one on his vacation in Japan. Therefore, it seems reasonable that travelers benefit a lot from international travel.
Some of my opponents claim that international travel has its shortcomings since it may have a negative influence not only on the environment but on society as well. This has some merits on the surface; however, it should be borne in mind that the government has taken strict international travel regulations into practice recently which leads to the fact that rarely can international tourists either violate the law or commit social vices. As a result, international travel has its advantages outweigh its disadvantages.
In conclusion, international travel stimulates economic development and benefits travelers in various ways. Therefore, the economy and travel experience cannot be upgraded unless international travel is encouraged to become a trend in the future.

Most of the times mistakes happen in IELTS because of the wrong use of prepositions. Prepositions are the words that usually stand before nouns. It shows the relationship between the word in the sentence as well the word which is the object of a preposition. Prepositions are of three types they are:

GRAMMAR EXPLANATION: Prepositions
Prepositions are a common cause of confusion for learners, often because each preposition has a number of different uses. This unit looks at the uses of a range of prepositions, and the difficulties they can present.
INTRODUCTION
1A. Basic information
A preposition describes the relationship between two or more things. It can link nouns, verbs or adjectives before the preposition with a noun or pronoun after it:
Now, let’s move on to item sixonthe agenda.
Be careful. The hem of your dress is draggingalongthe floor
John’s got an appraisal tomorrow. He's really anxiousabout it.
Prepositions can be one word only, eg. of, throughout, or more words, e.g. because of:
We got fewer dollars this week because of the drop in the exchange rate.
1B. Prepositions and adverbs
There is no difference in form between prepositions and many adverbs, but there is a difference in use: a preposition has an object but an adverb does not. Compare:
Did you ever travel before the war, Dad? (preposition)
I have a strange feeling that I’ve been here before. (adverb)
We can modify prepositions with adverbs (the adverbs in the example are in bold):
The pub is almost at the end of the street, just before the traffic lights.
MEANING AND USE
2A. Position

above, after, below, beneath, down, on, on top of, over, under, underneath, up
Above and over have similar meanings, as do below and under. We usually use above or below:
The refuge is in the hills above the town.
The temperature was below freezing last night.
But we use over or under in the following cases:
When one thing covers another: The clouds hung low over the hills. He disappeared under the water.
When horizontal movement is suggested: Are we going to fly over the Alps?
With prices, ages, speeds, distances, and quantities, where we mean more than or fewer. less than:
X The conference was very badly attended: below two hundred people came.
✓ The conference was very badly attended: under two hundred people came.
We use above or below to talk about 'level' or 'rank':
Is the position of Managing Editor above or below that of Editorial Director?
It is also possible to use after in this sense:
His opinion is second only after the Managing Director’s.
Note the use of up and down:
John lives a few houses further up/down the hill from us.
We generally use beneath in idiomatic phrases:
Your behavior towards my new husband was really beneath contempt!
horizontal relationships
against, along, alongside, around, at, beside, between, by, in, near, next to, on, on the left/ right of
We use at with a point in space, e.g. at the bus stop, at 8 Baker Street;
We use on with a surface or a line, e.g. on the table, on the river, on Oxford Street;
We use it with something that surrounds, e.g. in the wood.
We use different prepositions depending on how we see a place. Compare:
The group will meet at 7.30 at the sports center. (= either inside or outside)
The group will meet at 7.30 at the sports center. (= inside)
Note: Also: at the corner of the street (= a point) but in the corner of the room (= inside).
We usually use in with countries, cities or towns.
We use on with streets, roads, avenues, etc.,
We use at with the names of squares if we think of the 'address', and in if we think of the square as ‘surrounding’ us:
X The film premiere this year will take place on Leicester Square at London.
✓ The film premiere this year will take place at Leicester Square in London.
The trees in Leicester Square don’t look very healthy.
We use at when we refer to gatherings of people: at a party, at a conference.
We use beside and alongside to express proximity along a line:
Warehouses were built beside /alongside the motorway.
‘facing' relationships
across, after, before, behind, facing, in front of, opposite, over
We use in front of or behind to describe the spatial relationship of two things, one after the other on a line and facing the same way:
A is in front of B, B is behind A.
In front of and behind can also be used for metaphorical, not literal, position:
Christopher is really behind his brother in terms of academic development.
Before and after can refer to position in some contexts:
Karen’s nephew appears before I in front of the magistrates this afternoon.
You ‘ll be called first as my name is after yours on the list.
Opposite, facing, across and over have the meaning of on the other side of but with across and over we have to state on the other side of what, e.g. a road, a river:
Note: The difference between opposite / facing and in front of is that the items on the 'line' are not facing in the same direction, as in the diagram above, but are facing each other:
A is facing/ opposite B. A and B are facing /opposite each other.
2B. Movement and direction

down (to), off, on, onto, over, up (to)
We use these prepositions for movement up or down:
Keep to the right as you go down the stairs.
Look at Johnny's knee – he’s just fallen off his bike.
We get on or off a bus, plane, train, boat and bike but into and out of a car.
We can use over for a movement up and then down an obstacle:
The burglar leaped over the garden fence as he ran away from us.
passing movement
across, along, down, over, past, through, up
We use along for movement In a line, eg. along a river/ road:
You can spend a pleasant afternoon strolling along the canals in Amsterdam.
We also often use up and down with roads and rivers (meaning 'along'):
Go up the road to the corner, and the cinema is on the left.
We use across for movement from one side to the other of something on a ‘surface’, e.g. across the river/ road/field. We use through for movement inside something, e.g. through a room/ tunnel:
You walk across the playing field to the wood then you go through the wood …
Over is similar to across (one side to the other) but it incorporates the idea of above:
Are we going to fly over the Alps on the way to Italy?
We use past for a movement from one side to the other of something, next to it:
I was startled by a huge bird that flew past my window this afternoon.

We can use both to and at after certain verbs, e.g. throw, shout. To suggests that the recipient of the action is willing but at that he/she is not willing:
Can you throw that book to me, please ? (I am willing.)
Don’t throw stones at the cat! (The cat is unwilling.)
We can use up to or towards when we approach someone or something, but we use only up to if we actually reach the person/thing:
X Do you think I can go towards him and ask for his autograph?
✓ Do you think I can go up to him and ask for his autograph?
✓The scientist moved quietly towards the group of grazing animals.
We can use up (to) and down (to) for movement north or south within a country:
We've just come down to Canberra from Darwin.
We can express a circular movement with (a)round:
We drove (a)round the roundabout three times before we took the correct exit.
We can also use the prepositions of movement in a less literal way:
A system of charges has been introduced into the Health Service.
2C. Time

at, in, on
We use at with times, special periods (e.g. celebrations) and in some phrases: at five to seven, at Christmas, at night, at the weekend (US English on the weekend)
We use in with parts of the day, months, seasons, years, centuries, etc.: in the evening, in December, in 1999, in the winter, in the twentieth century
We use on with days and dates, including special days: on Thursday, on (the morning of) the 31st of October, on Christmas Day
We sometimes omit the preposition if we use about or around, to be less specific:
Let's meet at the station (at) about six; there's a train at ten past.
We can supply the materials (on) around Thursday next week.
In US English and informal British English, we can also omit on before days:
Great news! The travel agent can get us on a flight that leaves Wednesday
We do not use the prepositions at, on or in immediately before adverbs or adverbial phrases such as today, tomorrow, last/ this/ next week:

after, before, by, past
We can use after or past to mean ‘later than':
There’s no point in going to the party now; it’s after / past eleven o'clock.
We use before to mean ‘before a time’, and we use by to mean 'before or at a time':
Applications must be submitted before 30th November. (= on the 29th or earlier)
Applications must be submitted by 30th November. (= on the 30th or earlier)
Note: The adverbial phrases in time (with time to spare) and on time (at the right time, often fixed) have different meanings:
The wedding car arrived on time but the bride wasn't ready. (= time to spare)
I want to arrive right on time at the church. It's not done for the bride to arrive before the groom. (= not early or late)

as from / of, between, during, for, from … till/until/up to, in, inside, since, through (out), until/till, up to, within
We can use a number of different prepositions to talk about duration:
As of next Monday, we will have to suspend flexible working arrangements until further notice.
The long flowing style – of hair and clothes – was fashionable during/ through(out) much of the seventies.
This volcano hasn’t erupted since 1935.
The motorway widening was successfully completed within/in/inside four months.
British English uses from … to to express the start and endpoints of a period of time, but US English uses through:
I 'll be staying at the Hilton from Friday to Monday.
I’ll be staying at the Hilton Friday through Monday.

Note the difference between by and of here:

We use in when we refer to the means we use to achieve something:
Complete the form in pencil. He prefers to paint in watercolor.

inclusion and exclusion
among, as well as, besides, between, beyond, inside, instead of, out of, outside, under, within, without
We usually use between with only two objects and among with more than two:
For women, the distinction between work and leisure is less clear-cut.
The terminals are among the biggest single development sites in Europe.
Note the uses of the following prepositions which have the meaning of exclusion:

Except and except for can both be used after phrases containing determiners such as all, every, no:

Except for one question on calculus, Julian got all the maths questions right.
However, when the prepositional phrase contradicts the main idea of the sentence, we use except for:
Trulli emerged from the wreckage of the car uninjured except for a broken thumb.
We use but for to mean ‘if not for’:
The house would have been destroyed but for the quick thinking of the firefighters.

PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES
3A. Form
A prepositional phrase consists of a preposition and the word(s) that follow it. The most common words that follow prepositions are nouns and pronouns:

We can also use -ing forms, adverbs or wh- clauses after prepositions:
As well ashelping us to move into the house, John bought us a great present.
Please don’t interfere in any way withwhat I have written in the introduction.
A prepositional phrase can include a determiner before the noun or -ing form:
The headteacher doesn’t approve ofhis arrangement with a local band.
We can't use a that-clause after a preposition:
X The government managed to pass the bill through Parliament, despite that it had a low majority.
✓ The government managed to pass the bill through Parliament, despite its low majority/despite having a low majority/despite the fact that it had a low majority.
Nor can we use an infinitive phrase, except with the prepositions except, but and save: Please come straight home – don’t stop except to phone us.
3B. Stranded preposition
A 'stranded preposition' is a preposition on its own at the end of a clause or sentence. English commonly uses stranded prepositions in:
Questions: Who are you coming to the party with?
Relative clauses: I’ve been offered the job in London that I applied for!
The passive: What is your coat made from?
Infinitive clauses: That man is impossible to work with!
We sometimes keep the preposition and object together in formal language:
We have been unable to offer you the position for which you applied.
Note: We do not precede the relative pronoun that with a preposition:
X We have been unable to offer you the position for that you applied.

GRAMMAR EXPLANATION: Adjectives
Adjectives in English seem straightforward as they do not change their form except when they are comparatives or superlatives. But the different positions of adjectives, e.g. concerned residents or residents concerned, and the sequence of groups of adjectives can cause difficulty. This unit looks at these areas and at the use of participle and compound adjectives.
ADJECTIVE PATTERNS
1A. Form and use
Adjectives are words that give extra information about nouns. They do not change their form to show number or gender:
The hero was played by a youngboy. Several younggirls took the secondary roles.
Many adjectives are formed from other words; notice the spelling changes:

Adjectives can sometimes act as nouns when they describe a particular group or characteristic. We usually use the definite article and a plural verb:
Old people are becoming more numerous. = The old are becoming more numerous.
Note: We cannot use the possessive 's with adjectives used as nouns or make them plural:

1B. Attributive position
Most adjectives can be used in front of a noun (attributive position), or after a linking verb, eg. be (predicative position):
Attributive: We’ve just seen an exciting film
Predicative: That film was exciting
Note: But there are some adjectives which we usually only use in one position. Some classifying adjectives (which describe what type of thing something is) and emphasizing adjectives are mainly used before a noun (see the table below):

✓ They’re building a chemical plant outside the town.
Adjectives in predicative position are usually the complement of a linking verb (eg be. become,feel, seem):
When she heard the noise Mary became very uneasy.
However, after certain verbs of thinking and feeling (i.e. consider, find, think) we can omit the linking verb:
I consider/ find him (to be) very reliable.
Many adjectives beginning with the letter a and adjectives describing health and feelings are not usually used before nouns; we use them in predicative position:
X Try not to disturb the asleep children.
✓ Try not to disturb the children; they are asleep
Note: There are some fixed phrases/idioms in which we use normally predicative adjectives before a noun with a special meaning, eg. glad tidings, an ill wind, a ready wit, a sorry state, an upset stomach.
Some predicative adjectives have equivalent words which can be used before a noun:

1D. Adjectives after nouns, pronouns, etc.
We use adjectives after indefinite words like something, anyone, no one, nothing, somewhere, etc.:

Some adjectives, including some ending in –able and -ible, can follow a noun if the noun follows a superlative adjective or the first/ last/ next/ only.
They say she's the oldest woman alive

Adjectives that are followed by a prepositional phrase, e.g. interested in something,suitable for somebody, go after, not before, a noun:
X The project will appeal to interested in ecology students

This is similar to a reduced relative clause. We can also use a full relative clause with the adjective in predicative position:
The project will appeal to students who are interested in ecology
Note: Some adjectives have a different meaning when used before or after a noun:
The meeting was full of concerned residents. (= worried)
The students concerned were a small minority. (= who took part/were involved)
I'm afraid we have opposite points of view. (= contrasting)
We used to live in the house opposite(= physically facing/across from us)
The present chairman is getting on a bit. (= current/existing now)
We took a vote of all members present (= physically there)
Responsible parents have been outraged by this show. (= caring/conscientious)
The person responsible will be caught and punished. (= who did the action)
He gave us a ridiculously involved excuse. (= complicated)

PARTICIPLE ( -ING OR -ED) ADJECTIVES
2A. Position
We often use -ing and -ed participles as adjectives. We usually use them in the same positions as other adjectives:
A win, even by only one goal, would be a satisfying result.
I never find fast food very satisfying.
Recommendations from satisfied customers got our business off the ground.
We follow up every complaint from customers dissatisfied with our service.
Some participle adjectives (see the table below) can be used on their own before or after a noun:
The chosen song features the innovative use of digital sampling.
The song chosen may be a disappointment to lovers of traditional ballads.
Note: But some participle adjectives (see the table below) can only be used after a noun:

2B. Use
When we use participles as adjectives, -ing participles have an active meaning and –ed participles have a passive meaning:
I always seem to play for the losing team. (= the team which is losing)
She found the lost ring under the sofa. (= the ring which had been lost)
We often use participles as adjectives to describe feelings or opinions. We use –ing participles to describe a feeling that something causes:
It was a frightening film. (= it frightened us/ it made us feel afraid)
We use -ed participles to describe a feeling that someone experiences:
I felt frightened when I watched that film. (= I was frightened/ I experienced fear)
Note: Inanimate objects cannot have feelings so we don’t usually use -ed adjectives about feelings to describe them:
X The report into the Paddington rail crash was rather worried
✓ The report was rather worrying (= The report made readers feel anxious.)
We can use that/ those with all participle adjectives with a meaning like ‘the one/the ones that …'. In this pattern we use that to refer to a thing and those to refer to things or people:
The easiest route is that taken by Amundsen. (= the one which was taken by)
Those living in temporary accommodation will be rehoused within three months. (= those people who are living in)
I feel sorry for those left behind. (= Those people that are left behind.)
2C. Compounds
We sometimes combine participles with other words to make compound adjectives. The participle usually comes last. Notice the use of hyphens when the compound adjective is used before a noun:
This Japanese maple is a particularly slow-growing variety.
Handel's ‘Xerxes' was a rarely-performed opera until relatively recently.
Interest in Latino music is no longer confined to a Spanish-speaking audience.
The marines made a death-defying leap over the cliff edge.
GROUPS OF ADJECTIVES
3A. Adjective order
We often use more than one adjective to describe a noun. The order of adjectives generally follows this sequence of categories:
Opinion + size + quality/ character + age + shape + colour + participles + origin + material + type + purpose
The 747’s refurbished interior features fantastic soft grey leather seats.
For sale: small, old, French carriage clock.
We always put the category which is most permanent or important (usually ‘type' or ‘purpose’) next to the noun:
X The builders took out the gas heating antiquated system.
✓ The builders took out the antiquated gas heating system.
And we put opinion adjectives before all others:
X I’ve just bought this new mobile fantastic phone.
✓ I’ve just bought this fantastic new mobile phone.
Note: We don’t usually use more than three or four adjectives before a noun. If we want to give more information we can use additional clauses:

3B. Paired adjectives
If two adjectives describe different parts of the same thing we put 'and' between them.
X The chrome steel facade glinted in the sunlight.
✓ The chrome and steel facade glinted in the sunlight. (= Some parts were chrome, some parts were steel.)
We always use 'and' between two colors:
X The players will be wearing blue red shirts for this match.
✓ The players will be wearing blue and red shirts for this match.
We can use 'and' between two adjectives which describe similar aspects of something:
She's looking for a stable and long-lasting relationship.
When two adjectives describe contrasting aspects of the same thing we put 'but', 'yet' or 'though' between them:
The flat was located in a rundown but a central part of town.
Croup therapy can be a simple yet effective solution to this sort of problem.
3C. Using commas and 'and'
When there are several adjectives in the predicative position we usually put 'and' before the last one:
I’m afraid the hotel was ancient, dirty and overpriced.
With long lists of adjectives of the same category before a noun, we can use commas and put and before the last adjective, or we can simply list the adjectives:
I found him a friendly, knowledgeable and dedicated guide.

We don't use and before the last adjective when the adjectives are of different categories:

Plot

He asks Fatima to marry him, but she says she will only marry him after he completes his journey and finds his treasures. He is perplexed by this, but later learns that true love will not stop nor plead to sacrifice one’s Personal Legend, and if it does, it is not true love.
Santiago then encounters a lone alchemist who also teaches him about Personal Legends. He says that people want to find only the treasure of their Personal Legends but not the Personal Legend itself. Synopsis
The book is divided into four parts: “The Modern World”, “Resources”, “The Third World”, and “Organization and Ownership”.
In the first chapter, “The Problem of Production”, Schumacher argues that the modern economy is unsustainable. Natural resources (like fossil fuels), are treated as expendable income, when in fact they should be treated as capital, since they are not renewable, and thus subject to eventual depletion. He further argues that nature’s resistance to pollution is limited as well. He concludes that government effort must be concentrated on sustainable development, because relatively minor improvements, for example, technology transfer to Third World countries, will not solve the underlying problem of an unsustainable economy.
Schumacher’s philosophy is one of “enoughness”, appreciating both human needs and limitations, and appropriate use of technology. It grew out of his study of village-based economics, which he later termed Buddhist economics, which is the subject of the book’s fourth chapter.
He faults conventional economic thinking for failing to consider the most appropriate scale for an activity, blasts notions that “growth is good”, and that “bigger is better”, and questions the appropriateness of using mass production in developing countries, promoting instead “production by the masses”. Schumacher was one of the first economists to question the appropriateness of using gross national product to measure human well-being, emphasizing that “the aim ought to be to obtain the maximum amount of well being with the minimum amount of consumption”. In the epilogue he emphasizes the need for the “philosophy of materialism” to take second place to ideals such as justice, harmony, beauty, and health.
