I like eating cakes, but my dentist keeps saying I ought to try to wean myself on sugary to protect my teeth.
I have cakes once a month. I will reward myself by a piece of tiramisu if I work hard and exercise regularly this month. 2. Laughter (Jan-May 2020)
Sample Answer by IELTS High Scorer
Yes, I really like, such movies or TV shows make me feel relaxed and happy. When I was in a bad mood, I’m much more willing to watch comedies, because they can help me to transfer my attention and go out of the shadow.
I’m a girl who really likes to laugh, so I think the last time I laugh should be yesterday. I was watching a talking show program yesterday night, and there were some jokes in the show which make me laugh out of tears. Even now I think of them, I still find it was funny. 3. 10. Spending time alone
Sample Answer by IELTS High ScorerDo you like spending time by yourself? Yes, I enjoy spending time by myself. In other words, I enjoy doing anything alone. We have to socialize with others not only in life but in our work time. It has been more and more difficult to have our real private time, I mean the time just for myself. Therefore, I like to do something alone to enjoy that private time which makes me think of something or just relax. What did you do last time you were by yourself? I read a book before I slept. Always, the bedtime completely belongs to me, and I choose to read books at that time. I remember I read a detective book last night, and the plot was pretty attractive and a little scary. I like that book and I wonder what happened then, so I still will read it tonight. What do you usually do when you spend time with yourself? One of my habits is baking, and usually, I do it when I’m alone. And every time I do baking, I hope no one would disturb me. Focusing on it makes me feel relaxed and peaceful. It is a kind of way to release my pressure in daily life. Also, I would like to read books which I’m interested in spending time by myself. 11. Water Sports
Sample Answer by IELTS High Scorer:Are water sports popular in your country? I’m not that sure, but from what I can see, from the young people around me, they tend to favor water sports, such as scuba diving and surfing, to have fun, but maybe for others, especially the old generation, they will probably not be into it. What water sports do you like? I’m into all kinds of water sports, in terms of extreme ones, I’m keen on scuba diving and surfing because doing it makes me feel excited and I really get a good kick out of it. And in terms of something gentle, I prefer water yoga because it helps me keep fit. 12. Breaks
Sample Answer by IELTS High Scorer:How often do you take a break? Yes, I often take breaks when working or studying because it becomes difficult to concentrate after a long-time study. If I were to focus on one task for a long time, I couldn’t perform well. Short breaks can allow me to refresh my mind so that I can handle the task at a high level. What do you usually do during a break? When I take a break, I usually choose to listen to music to help relax my mind. Furthermore, I always close my eyes and give them a short rest before continuing to work. If it is a relatively long break, I may choose to watch a short TV show or eat something in order to get more energy to return to my work. Other Speaking Part 1 Topics (Jan-May 2020)

Watches
Well, I am more a cosmetics girl than clothing and accessories, hence, there are not many watches and jewelry in my possession. However, I have nothing against wearing a beautiful piece of art on my wrist and do own a few exclusive timepieces which suit perfectly with my clothing on some special occasions, giving me a sense of identity and uniqueness. VocabularyIn someone's possession: if something is in someone's possession, they have it Have nothing against to dislike or not approve of someone or something for a particular reason On (special) occasions: from time to time; now and then 2. Why do people like expensive watches? Just like any other accessories, the more luxurious a timepiece looks, the higher social status the owner may hold. Watches are widely used by either gender and one of the visual indicators presenting how professional, smart and attractive a person is. Therefore, if one wants to be acknowledged and taken seriously, he/she will prefer a high-end watch rather than a collection of low-end ones. Vocabulary Timepiece (n): a clock or watch Social status (n): a person's standing or importance in relation to other people within a society Indicator (n): a sign that shows you what something is like or how a situation is changing Acknowledge (n): to accept that somebody/something has a particular authority or status High-end (a): expensive and of high quality Low-end (a): at the cheaper end of a range of similar products Hometown1. Well, my hometown is a medium city with roughly 15 wards. The booming population and economy have turned it into a promising land for many investors. 3. Please describe your hometown a little? There are two words to describe my hometown, which are natural and dynamic. It has picturesque scenery of mountains and beaches. On the other side of the coin, its industry is growing fast; and a lot of industrial zones are being built there. 4. How long have you been living there? I had spent a happy childhood in my hometown for 18 years until I left for study at university. It's 5 years since the day I left, but the memory of my hometown is always in my mind. 5. They live close together and always give others a hand when they are in need. 6. Do you think you will continue living there for a long time? I think I will definitely go back to my hometown, find a job and settle down there because I love my hometown so much and it is also a safe, peaceful and worth-living place. 7. What do visitors like to go in your hometown? I think most of them like to go to historical sites and the beautiful sunny beaches. Do you live in a house or an apartment? I live in a terraced house that has a living room, a kitchen, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a lovely back garden. It's not really a spacious house, but it's just right for me and my family. 2. Do you usually spend time with your family? We often spend quality time together on eating well-prepared meals by my mother, talking with each other while enjoying our favorite delicious foods. It's a precious time when we can momentarily get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. 4.What do your family usually do together? My family often gathers around the table enjoying a cozy meal together, communicating and sometimes busting into laughter because of my father's humorous stories. ==> Band 9.0 Sample AnswerNewspapers and magazines1. Do you often read newspapers? Yes, I read the newspaper every day to keep up to date with the latest news and see what the hottest topic of the day is. I've been in the habit of doing this for a long time. 2. Do you prefer to read local news or international news? Well, I suppose that I prefer/have an inclination towards international news, especially news about relationships among countries around the world. This is probably because I really care about diplomatic issues and want to keep track of what's happening outside my country. 3. Which is more popular where you live, in newspapers or magazines? Well, I think that people read newspapers more often than magazines, normally because newspapers provide information that is relatively easy to understand for almost everyone. On the other hand, magazines contain longer articles and specifically focus on a particular topic which may be quite difficult or unfamiliar to some readers. 4. Do many people today read newspapers? I guess… yes, maybe. Because every morning when I go to my office, I can see many people reading the daily newspapers at pavement cafés. However, I think nowadays people are tending to gradually change their habits and accessing the latest news online. 5. In the future, do you think more people than today will read magazines, or fewer people? I'm not really sure about this, but I suppose that there will be fewer people reading magazines in the future. It's probably because nowadays there are various sources of information, so people can search if they want to find the knowledge of any field, especially on the Internet… it's easier and cheaper. Maybe in the future perhaps specialists will be the only ones who read the magazines which relate to their own particular fields. 6. Do you think newspapers will be very important to you in the future? Well, honestly, I haven't ever thought about that before, but I love my routine of reading newspapers while drinking coffee every morning, it's completely relaxing. Music1. Do you often (like to) listen to music? Or do you like listening to songs? So far I haven't met anyone who dislike music. However, when the workload is too heavy that requires me to stay highly focus, music is a huge distractor. Unlike many people who like listening to instrumental music because it highly benefits for their concentration and study, in my case the music makes me feel instantly sleepy. 2. When do you listen to music? Well, music is essential to humans in the whole world so I'm no exception. I usually listen to cheerful music when I need motivation while sad music is my go-to choice during emotional days. 3. How much time do you spend listening to music every day? As I've mentioned I prefer working in silence, or to put it simply, no music is allowed during my working hours. After a long day at school, I probably want to chill for like half an hour with music to help me stay energetic so I can get back to work later. 4. What kinds of music do you like to listen to? Or What's your favorite kind of music? My music taste varied widely from West to East and from the 90s to modern EDM. But if Korean pop is considered as a kind of music, then yeah, that's my favorite of all time. More than half of my playlists are Korean songs and I'm always keeping myself updated with the news related to Korean showbiz. 5. Have you ever been to a concert before? Or Have you ever been to a musical performance? It was like once in a lifetime since in our country the ticket price for foreign artists' concerts is so out of my reach that I can only stay home and watch online. It was 2014 that I finally did go to a concert on my own, obviously, it was a Korean concert. It was absolutely mind-blowing and unforgettable for me. 6. Do you like to listen to live music? Unless it's live at a coffee shop, whereby literally only you and the music, then yeah I would love to go enjoy myself. But I would change my mind if it's a concert. That place is too crowded and too messy that most of the case I end up having serious dizzy and headache. 7. When did you start listening to this type of music? Since the day a friend of mine introduced her favorite group to me. She couldn't help herself talking on and on about them that I thought I somehow needed to catch up with her. And the more I know about Korean pop, the more passionate I've become. 8. Where do you listen to it? Almost everywhere, except for classroom. It's the golden era of mobility so everyone carries earphones and phone with them all the time, music, therefore, is on their fingertips. 9. How do you feel when you listen to this music? Well I'm a type of person whose moods are easily affected by what I'm listening to, thus as the music changes, my mood also fluctuate. But most of the time listening to some music helps me relax and chill a bit. 10. Have you ever learned to play a musical instrument? I learned to play the organ when I was in kindergarten. It was quite funny because I started out as one of the performers, then my teacher told my mom that I had better play the organ instead of performing, so I became her trainee and it continued for around 4 to 5 years until I was 10. 11. Is music an important subject at school in your country? Music is one of the compulsory subjects for primary and secondary students. However, mainly singing is focused. We can also add some movements to make the songs more lively. Only those who are selected for the big performances can use musical instruments. 12. Did you often listen to music when you were a child? (If yes give details.) Since my parents are music-lovers and they also have very good tastes, I was exposed to the old kinds of music at a very young age. Although I just can't get the message at that time, my mom said that I was quite enjoyable. 13. What kinds of music are (most) popular in your country? Besides pop music, the young generation nowadays exposes to a number of different types of music. It is indeed difficult to tell which is the most popular since from my point of view each type has roughly the same popularity. But I guess our pop music is the most popular. At least with the people I've met so far, all of them have listened or have known by heart a traditional song. Speaking PART 1 TOPICS (JAN – APRIL)House/Accommodation1. In 1991, there were 290 million visits to public libraries. In particular, the percentage of people visiting public library to borrow and return books was 65%, followed by that of those who read newspaper or magazine with 15%. Also, 10% was the proportion of people obtained information and studied in libraries. In 2000, although the number of library visits increased by 60 million, Britain experienced a considerable decline in the percentage of visits to borrow and return books. In addition, the proportion of people going to library to obtain information doubled to 20% while those of studying and reading newspaper and magazine fell sharply to 2% and 5% respectively. Lastly, the new use of library (borrow and return videos) constituted 18% of total visits. IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic:The world natural resources are consumed at an ever-increased rate. What are the causes of this situation? What are the solutions? Sample Essay: The overconsumption of natural resources has evolved as a major topic of concern in recent years. This alarming trend is caused by a few factors, and it must be addressed by a number of definite actions. The increasingly high level of exploitation of natural resources could be ascribed to a number of reasons. The most obvious reason is the tremendous demand for resources in developing countries, such as China and Brazil. The citizens of these countries are becoming increasingly wealthy, and they may now afford a living standard that is associated with a higher level of resource consumption. A clear example of this is the widespread use of cars among tens of millions of middle-income Chinese nationals, which may have contributed substantially to the burning of oil on a global scale. Besides, the over-dependence on natural resources, such as fossil fuels, is another significant reason to consider. In Aus, for example, the majority of electricity is generated in thermal power stations, in which a vast amount of coal is the burnt on a daily basis. Some measures can be taken to mitigate the problem of over-consuming Earth's resources. The most practical measure at the moment is to reduce the demand for resources in developing countries. This can be done by mass-producing energy-efficient products, such as hybrid cars, and selling these items at a low price to citizens of these nations. If such a measure is implemented, these people may still benefit from the modern living standard without over-consuming natural resources. Besides, the most sustainable solution is to lower the reliance on natural resources by taking advantage of alternative sources. For instance, wind and tidal power in the Netherlands, nuclear power in Japan and solar power in the United States have all proven their efficiency in energy production. These forms of energy should be used in other parts of the world as well, to minimise the global dependence on fossil fuels. All the existing data provides a concrete foundation that the overexploitation of natural resources derives from the strong demand in developing countries and the over-reliance on these types of resources. Strong measures, such as reducing the aforementioned demand and making use of alternative energy sources, must be implemented to tackle this situation.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic:Some people say we do not need printed paper newspaper anymore. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? SAMPLE ESSAY: Several people anticipate that publication of printed materials should come to a halt due to the emergence of computer-based reading habit. As far as I am concerned, such a trend is inevitable. Firstly, the utmost advantages in terms of costs render printed publications far eclipsed by digital versions. For instance, instead of buying many with various contents, different press agencies, just by a click to search on the Internet, users can access a rich range of reading resources with various contents, many of which are free or cost little. Besides, cutting large expenses on printing or shipping incurred by conventional printing, digitalized publications are substantially economical, granting readers more opportunities to afford quality reading materials at reasonable prices. Secondly, it is the convenience of digitalized materials that may persuade readers to halt their traditional reading habit. Indeed the availability of thousands of documents, provided domestically and internationally without geographical constraints could bring users unlimited choices and encourage them to read on electronic devices more regularly. Moreover promptness of news updates through e-materials would help individuals keep abreast of the latest news substantially quicker than traditional ones. Finally, rising awareness of preserving the global environment also plays a role in the imminent elimination of printed materials. To specify, readers over the globe switch to device-based reading as they hope to contribute to reducing logging activities for wood, which would be continued in parallel with demands for printed materials. Therefore, the contemporary reading habit on gadgets is also considered as a meaningful and eco-friendly substitution for the conventional habit. In conclusion, due to complete advantages of reading on high-tech devices over the habit of reading printed materials, publication of printed versions would seem unnecessary in the future.

BAND 9.0 SAMPLE ANSWER:I would like to describe a person who I had to be friendly to, although I did not really like her. I think this situation is quite common in our lives, especially when we have to act as part of a team. A couple of months ago, I was assigned to a team at my workplace in order to tackle a big project. As part of the team, I had to cooperate closely with this person. However, we had never really liked each other for several reasons. Firstly, she is much older than I am, so she always thinks she is right and disregards the opinions of others. I would describe her as both bossy and officious, although she did not have a more senior position than I did in the company. Secondly, I considered her irresponsible because she did not appear to me to pay serious attention to the project. So, although it was supposedly a group project, I ended up working all on my own as much as possible in order to see the task through. As the work was vital for our company, we had to be successful. I therefore had no choice except to collaborate with her in order to finish the job. I would rather have done all the work alone, but if I had refused to work with her as part of the team, then the evaluation of my job performance would have been affected at the end of the year. So, knowing her personality as I did, I swallowed my pride and tried to be patient. Despite our many arguments, we completed the task on time. I learned that sometimes people can work together, even though they don‟t get on with each other. It just needs a little bit of time and patience to work things out, and each person has to compromise to achieve a common goal. USEFUL VOCABULARY & EXPRESSIONS FOR IELTS SPEAKING:

Recent IELTS Writing Actual Test in June, 2016 and Band 8.5 Sample Essay Posted: 20 Apr 2020 05:06 PM PDT
IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic (released in June, 2016)It is suggested that everyone wants to have a car, a television and a fridge. Do disadvantages of this development for society outweigh advantages? Model Essay of Band 8.5: It is true that almost everyone wants a car, a TV and a fridge as some of the basic essentials of a good lifestyle. Despite the benefits, I believe that on a long-term view these are outweighed by the disadvantages. On the one hand, the growing consumption of cars, televisions and fridges has several benefits. At its simplest, the rise of the consumer society stimulates economic growth. The increasing sales figures of cars and household equipment are often associated with more jobs and wealth being created for society. Another advantage is that people can have a higher standard of living than before. Travelling on the road is no longer tedious because individuals can sit in a car, listening to music and enjoying the comfort of air conditioning. In the same way, people may watch television to relax or to gain knowledge, and fridges help them preserve food longer without being stale. On the other hand, I believe that the above benefits are outweighed by potential problems. Primarily, the use of cars is often held responsible for environmental pollution. Exhaust emissions from automobiles impair the air quality and consequently affect people's health. For example, in many big cities in the world, urban citizens are suffering from chronic respiratory problems due to the poor air quality. Using fridges and televisions also places a pressure on electricity supply in the world. The growing use of these devices in the home merely compounds the problem of insufficient electricity that has become intractable in many parts of the world. In conclusion, taking a long-term perspective, I would argue that the drawbacks of this trend outweigh the advantages. IELTS Writing Practice Test 6 From Recent Test (12/12/2015) Posted: 20 Apr 2020 05:00 PM PDT
IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic:People should follow the customs and traditions when people start to live in a new country. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Outline Identifying the essay type: Agree or disagree INTRODUCTION: many people hold this opinion. I completely agree with it. BODY Paragraph 1: [Problems if local customs are not followed] [1] Difficulties for new residents who do not follow customs and traditions of host country -example: if they start a business, they have to know local business customs in order to be successful. [2] Some actions will be illegal in the host country and will make local people angry, too -example: Singapore. Paragraph 2: [Benefits of following local customs and traditions] [1] Local people will accept newcomers who do this – more integration, easier to make friends. [2] New immigrants will enjoy the traditions and be able to take part in community life -example: enjoy festivals. CONCLUSION: repeat, using some different words. BAND 8.0+ SAMPLE ANSWER: Many people argue that foreigners should adapt to the local customs and traditions when they come to reside in a new country. I completely agree with this view. Newcomers will certainly face difficulties if they do not conform to the norms of social behaviour in the host country. Firstly, it will become almost impossible for them to blend into their new environment. For example, an entrepreneur who comes to live in a new country and starts up a business must be aware of the business practices of that country. There are bound to be many pitfalls, not only legal ones but also simply in terms of winning and keeping customers. Secondly, recent immigrants might fall foul of the law if they do not respect the behaviour and customs of locals. In Singapore, for instance, residents will consider newcomers dirty and ill-mannered if they litter the street or spit gum in public places. There are also many benefits for foreigners when they do adopt the customs and traditions of their new country of residence. One advantage is that local people will be more welcoming when they feel that the newcomers are showing respect for the local way of life. The establishment of closer links with the host community might lead to greater integration and mutual understanding. Another benefit is the richness of the experience which newcomers will gain from enjoying aspects of local customs and traditions, enabling them to participate in community life and avoid social isolation. During festivals and national holidays, especially, they will feel like they 'belong' in their new country. In conclusion, I would argue that it is essential for new residents to follow the traditions and habits of locals in the host community in order to integrate fully into society. Facebook buys 9.9% Jio stake in largest tech FDI for India Posted: Social media major Facebook will invest Rs 43,574 crore into Jio Platforms, a unit of Reliance Industries, for a 9.99% stake. The investment will value Jio Platforms - a digital apps platform - at Rs 4.62 lakh crore. "Reliance Industries Limited ("Reliance Industries"), Jio Platforms Limited ("Jio Platforms") and Facebook, Inc. ("Facebook") today announced the signing of binding agreements for an investment of Rs 43,574 crore by Facebook into Jio Platforms," Mukesh Ambani-led RIL said in a statement on Wednesday. "This investment by Facebook values Jio Platforms at Rs 4.62 lakh crore pre-money enterprise value ($65.95 billion, assuming a conversion rate of Rs 70 to a US Dollar). Facebook's investment will translate into a 9.99% equity stake in Jio Platforms on a fully diluted basis," the oil to telecom business house added. Reliance Jio - the telecom unit with 388 million subscribers - will continue to remain a wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Platform. "…In the post-Corona era, I am confident of India's economic recovery and resurgence in the shortest period of time. The partnership will surely make an important contribution to this transformation," Mukesh Ambani, chairman and MD of RIL, said in the statement. In a separate statement, Facebook said the deal underscores its commitment to India. India is the biggest market for Facebook with 328 million monthly users and the company's WhatsApp messaging app has 400 million users in the country, also the most in the world."…Our efforts with Jio will be focused on opening new doors and fueling India's economic growth and the prosperity of its people. Concurrent with the investment, Jio Platforms, Reliance Retail and WhatsApp have also entered into a commercial partnership agreement to further accelerate Reliance Retail's New Commerce business on the JioMart platform using WhatsApp and to support small businesses on WhatsApp.The business house said that this was the largest investment for a minority stake by a technology company anywhere in the world and the largest FDI in the technology sector in India. "Our goal is to enable new opportunities for businesses of all sizes, but especially for the more than 60 million small businesses across India. They account for the majority of jobs in the country, and form the heart and soul of rural and urban communities alike. In the face of the coronavirus, it is important that we both combat this global pandemic now, and lay the groundwork to help people and businesses in the years to come," Facebook said. 75284197It added that the focus of the tie up will be to create new ways for people and businesses to operate more effectively in the growing digital economy. "For instance, by bringing together JioMart, Jio's small business initiative, with the power of WhatsApp, we can enable people to connect with businesses, shop and ultimately purchase products in a seamless mobile experience."Morgan Stanley as financial advisor and AZB & Partners and Davis Polk & Wardwell as counsels advised on the transaction. |
A firewall against China will hurt India more Posted: By Swaminathan S Anklesaria AiyarPanicky restrictions look defensible in the short run and ridiculous in the longer run. This is true of the government decision to scrutinise & curb Chinese investment to prevent 'opportunistic takeovers of Indian companies due to the current Covid-19 pandemic'.Most of my life, Indian politicians were paranoid about India being taken over by the US through foreign direct investment (FDI). Protesting globalists like me were called idiots or traitors wanting a return of the East India Company, which came to India purportedly for trading and then took over India. Politicians and intellectuals warned that foreign investment was a vehicle for eventual political takeover and must be minimised. 75280787However, Asian tiger economies welcomed western investment and prospered without becoming puppets, while India remained poor. Singapore and Hong Kong became richer (in per capita income) than their former colonial master Britain. Yet, fear of foreign investment remained deeply rooted in India till the reforms of 1991 that gradually opened the economy and proved the old notions to be nonsense. The pandemic has now produced a similar paranoia about China, with as little justification. India's transition to a miracle economy in the 2000s, growing at 8% annually owed something to hugely increased inflows of FDI and foreign portfolio investment (FPI) into its stock markets. In those days, Indian companies were quoted at far cheaper valuations than today.Did that mean Indian companies got taken over at unfair bargain prices? No, foreign investors certainly increased their holdings of blue chips, especially companies like HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, and collectively became their largest shareholders. But this did not mean foreign takeover of the banks in question or India.Almost all the Fortune 500 (largest 500 companies in the world) now have some operations in India, including Microsoft, Amazon, Vodafone, General Motors, Ford, Shell, General Electric, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Suzuki, Hindustan Unilever, GiIlette and Nestlé. They dominate several consumer goods, and completely dominate the production of cars. Has that threatened Indian security and made it a puppet? Nonsense. China has now become a significant, though still modest, foreign investor. As of December 2019, China's cumulative investment in India exceeded $8 billion. That is too puny to worry about. In the last decade, China has become technologically world-class and financially powerful, but is nowhere near as strong as US companies, and nowhere near as dominant as US companies were in the 1960s and 1970s. Just as many countries prospered using US investment and technology, so, too, should they prosper with Chinese investment and technology today.Eighteen of India's 23 unicorns (startups with over $1 billion value) have some investment from Chinese companies. More is badly needed today since the Covid-induced recession threatens to kill many unicorns. These include OYO, Paytm, BYJU's, MakeMyTrip and Swiggy. If Chinese investment can save them from collapse, hurrah. So what if one or two are taken over by Chinese white knights? Why will that be more problematic than Suzuki and Hyundai's dominance in autos, Gillette's in razor blades, Nestlé's in noodles, or Hindustan Unilever's in detergents and shampoos? Apparently alarm bells started ringing when Chinese investment in HDFC went up from 0.8% to 1%. In the name of Ram, Allah, Christ or Marx, how can you call that a security threat? The government says other countries, including the US and Germany, also worry about Chinese takeovers of strategically important companies in a depressed stock market. Now, India can certainly make a list of strategically important companies and ban their takeover by foreigners, Chinese or otherwise. The US refused to let a Chinese company acquire one of its top chipmakers, Fairchild. It has banned the use of Huwaei's 5G equipment in broadband networks. But it has no blanket scrutiny of every Chinese investment, as India is proposing. As for 'opportunistic takeovers' in a depressed stock market, who can ever confidently know when falling stock markets are bargains? 'Never catch a falling knife' is an old stock market saying. Amazon bought Flipkart's majority stake for a whopping $16 billion and must deeply regret overpaying today. If US and European investors with the greatest savvy and money power do not view Indian companies as cheap bargains, why think the Chinese know better? In any case why conflate depressed stock markets with national security?India today is in dire straits and desperately needs additional investment from every possible source. Reportedly, over $40 billion has flowed out of Indian equity and debt markets since the Covid-19 pandemic began. India seeks additional funds from abroad, and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has liberalised foreign investment in bonds to attract inflows.Everybody agrees that all developing countries need large sums and debt forgiveness from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank and other global agencies. This is needed to counter the pandemic-induced recession, which the IMF says will be much worse than the 2008 financial crisis, and the worst since the Great Depression of the 1930s. India must woo all foreign investors, including the Chinese. By all means place strategic Indian companies off bounds for takeovers. But welcome everything else. |
Rajan sees no early respite for world economy Posted: NEW DELHI: Cautioning people against giving communal colour to the coronavirus pandemic, former Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan has said such behaviour could explode and make it much harder for different communities to get along. Rajan's comments come in the wake allegations that Tabligh-e-Jamat members violated social distancing guidelines and ignored all instructions by organising a massive gathering last month at their centre in Nizamuddin area of Delhi. The gathering is believed to have emerged as a super-spreader of the coronavirus with thousands of cases across the country linked to Jamat members. So far, coronavirus has infected around 19,000 people and took over 600 lives in the country. "We see in India that some allegation that this was a Muslim plot. I mean, that kind of behaviour can explode and make much harder for her communities to get together within her country," Rajan said while speaking at the University of Chicago's virtual Harper Lecture series. Rajan along with 11 others has recently been appointed to an external advisory group of IMF MD Kristalina Georgieva to provide perspectives from around the globe on key developments and policy issues, including responses to the exceptional challenges the world now faces due to the coronavirus pandemic. Rajan, 57, who headed RBI for three years until September 2016, said nationalism that was already pretty strong before the virus is getting accentuated by the effects of COVID-19. Citing an example, he said, "China points finger at the US and says that was US intelligence plot and the US points finger at China and says that this was concocted by China." Rajan, who is currently working as a professor at the prestigious University of Chicago, said no part of the world is immune to COVID-19. "Everywhere in world is going to be affected, (and) global supply chain has been disrupted for some time. In the second quarter of calendar year 2020, we can see decline in GDP by 30-40 per cent," he said. Despite rebound in economic activities in the second half of 2020, global economic growth will still be negative for the year, he said. "I see (global) economic recovery underway a year from now," he noted. |
Banks readying debt recast for Covid-hit companies Posted: Mumbai: The Indian Banks' Association (IBA) is finalising a special restructuring proposal to be offered to companies impacted by the Covid-19-induced disruption, bankers said. The proposal will allow banks to extend loan tenures without classifying them as nonperforming assets (NPAs).Bankers feel companies hit by the lockdown will need at least a year to recover, and that the March to May moratorium announced by the RBI is not adequate. The draft restructuring proposal could be sent to the RBI for approval by Wednesday, said people familiar with the plan. Bankers are hoping to hear from the regulator soon."We are trying to work out a restructuring package without calling for a change in ownership while allowing the loans to remain 'standard'. Both present as well as future cash flows of many companies have been hit due to this crisis. The situation is such that even if we take them (the impacted firms) to bankruptcy courts, there won't be any buyers," said a person involved in the talks.Current RBI norms specify that a loan account undergoing restructuring without a change in ownership cannot be classified as 'standard'. Keeping these accounts standard would also allow banks to save on costs by way of extra provisions.75283810Banks to Save on Provisioning CostsThe IBA plan is to give the companies more time to pay back loans by extending the moratorium and in some cases extending the tenure of term loans. For working capital loans that are short term, the interest payment period could be extended to three years.Misuse of previous restructuring frameworks by promoters has made the RBI wary of approving any such rejig with existing promoters at the helm. Bankers are mindful that any proposal has to have strong checks and balances to ensure it is not misused."We may also rope in rating agencies and auditors to ensure only companies that need it benefit from it," said the person quoted earlier.Bankers argue that an extended loan moratorium and keeping loans as standard will help banks save on capital, and thus lend more."This is an unprecedented situation. Growth has fallen off the cliff and a recovery will be hard to come by if we do not act now. While provisions are necessary and is the right banking practice, it is not what is needed now. A provisioning holiday will help us concentrate on what is necessary — pushing credit and saving jobs," said another person involved in the deliberations.Bankers are also not sure of the impact of the current crisis on their own balance sheets. Loan growth is already at a 58-year-low, and could slip further due to demand destruction caused by the crisis."A restructuring plan will help not only the corporates, but also banks, because lenders will also struggle to forecast receivables for companies hit by the Covid crisis," said one of the persons. |
Baddi drug units feel side effects of virus curbs Posted: NEW DELHI: Fifty pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities have shuttered their operations in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh, Asia's largest pharmaceutical hub, while others are operating at significantly reduced capacities after the region was declared a containment zone, raising concerns about the shortage of supply of medicines in the country."Major pharma units including Wockhardt, USV Pharma, Sun Pharmaceuticals are among the 50 units that shut operations on April 12," Navneet Marwaha, state drug controller of HP told ET.75284223The state deputy drug controller Manish Kapoor added that some other facilities were operating at low capacities. "Dr Reddy's Lab is operating up to 15% of its capacity in its two units; Abbott is operational at 25-30%. Glenmark Pharma's three units are operating at mere 25%-30% capacity. Cadila Healthcare is operating at 35% capacity. Three units of Unichem Laboratories are operating at 40-45% capacity, Macleod's at 35-40% capacity," he said. There have been media reports that the state government has given special permission for pharma manufacturing to restart in the region. And state officials hope that things will improve as the situation improved in the region and there has not been a single Covid case in the last few days. But officials of drug companies, who did not wish to be named, said the situation was still bad and there has been no resumption of activities in the region. Dinesh Dua, chairman, Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council said that the challenging situation in Baddi could result in shortages in India. "Pharma units are not operating at more than 40%. Thirty percent units are closed for various reasons. Many of the units are SMEs, making arrangement for lodging and boarding from outside Solan district and from Haryana and Punjab are not feasible. These units can't manage with local personnel as all skilled employees have to come either from Panchkula or Pinjore in Haryana or Chandigarh/Mohali in Punjab. This may lead to drug shortages in May," he said. |

Nifty may see stable start, but trading range set to get narrower Posted: The domestic equity market refused to move out of the area pattern and displayed bearish tendencies on the expected lines on Tuesday, as the benchmark indices ended with deep cuts.Although we can blame the overnight weak global trade setup, the internal technical structure remained quite weak as elaborated in our previous notes. The market saw a gap-down opening and turned more nervous as the day progressed. Nifty marked its intraday low in the afternoon. However, some recovery was seen from the low, as that level was defended for the rest of the day. The headline index ended with a loss of 280.40 points, or 3.03 per cent.Volatility surged on the expected lines, causing the India Volatility Index, India VIX, to rise 4.01 per cent to 45.1975. Nifty remains within the Rising Wedge, and is likely to test the lower trend line, which is rising in nature, in the coming days. On the higher side, any up-move will face resistance near the upper boundary of the wedge.Unless the current area pattern is resolved, we will see the trading range of the market get narrower in the coming days.Nifty is likely to see a stable start on Wednesday. The 9,045 and 9,110 levels are likely to act as key resistance, while supports will come in at 8,910 and 8,830 levels.75276685The Relative Strength Index, or RSI, on the daily chart stood at 46.33; it remains neutral and shows no divergence against the price. The daily MACD remains bullish as it trades above the signal line. A Falling Window pattern occurred on the candles. This is a gap, but since such a gap has occurred within an area formation/pattern, it holds lesser significance.Pattern analysis makes it evident that Nifty has stayed in the area pattern. The index has currently formed a wedge. Such area patterns typically arise after a sharp bear market rally and often have bearish implications. All in all, Nifty continues to be in a precarious position. Some modest up-moves are likely to Wednesday. In the event of such as up-move, it would be prudent to utilise these moves to protect profits on existing positions. It would not be wise to chase any movement on the upside, but stay extremely selective and defensive while approach the market. A cautious outlook is advised for the day.(Milan Vaishnav, CMT, MSTA, is a Consulting Technical Analyst and founder of Gemstone Equity Research & Advisory Services, Vadodara. Telcos set to put up a decent show as tariff hike effect kicks in Posted: Mumbai: Telecom operators are likely to deliver decent March quarter earnings, as the effect of the recent tariff hike kicks in.All eyes will be set on the commentaries, as the nationwide lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic has raised the importance of telecom services for customers.UBS Securities expects India mobile revenue for Bharti Airtel and Vodafone India to increase 8-10 per cent quarter-on-quarter (QoQ), given that the tariff hike implemented in December 2019 is likely to have flown through to average revenue per user (Arpu), predominantly in Q4."We do not expect the ongoing Covid-19 situation to have had a major impact on Q4 FY20 mobile numbers. We could, however, see a small impact in Q1 of FY21 due to a potential decline in pre-paid recharges," UBS said in a note on February 15.Incorporating the full impact of the price hike, Edelweiss Securities forecasts an 11 per cent quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) jump in realisation for Bharti Airtel, taking its overall Arpu to Rs 150 from Rs 135.The brokerage is also building in 1 million subscriber additions for Bharti on account of subscriber migration from weaker operator Vodafone Idea.It expects Reliance Jio's wireless revenue to jump 10 per cent QoQ on the back of a 5 per cent year-on-year (YoY) Arpu increase and 20 million subscriber addition, and added that its expectation of slower subscriber addition for the operator is based on lower smartphone shipments due to the GST hike and the lockdown. For Bharti Airtel, Axis Capital expects consolidated revenue and Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) to grow 3.8 per cent QoQ and 5.1 per cent QoQ with 55 basis points QoQ improvement in Ebitda margin."We do not see major impact from COVID-19 with some increase in recharges and broadband towards the end of March 2020," Axis Capital said for Bharti Airtel in a April 3 note. The brokerage expects around 2 million subscriber addition in fourth quarter with some consolidation of SIM in low Arpu subscribers, as they may move to single SIM. It expects Bharti Airtel's Arpu to be up at Rs 142 from Rs 135 in the third quarter. For Vodafone Idea, Axis Capital expects revenue to improve 3.6 per cent QoQ in Q4 with Arpu improving 3.7 per cent QoQ to Rs 113. "Revenue improvement helped by tariff hike taken in December 2019, though the full impact is expected only in H1FY21 as more users come for recharge," Axis capital said."However, we expect subscriber exits to continue in Q4 with more low-Arpu subscriber exits amid SIM consolidation," it said.Analysts said the management commentary after the results may help better understand further funding plan in view of adjusted gross revenue (AGR) penalty and its future operational strategy. |

Adverse business impact of COVID-19 may drive companies to consider 'workforce optimisation': Survey Posted: NEW DELHI: Amid increasing concern over COVID-19, companies in India expect negative impact on their business in the next 12 months, and for some the adverse impact may last longer, driving organisations to consider "workforce optimisation", a survey said on Tuesday. According to the Willis Towers Watson survey, 57 per cent of organisations in India expect a "moderate-to-large" negative impact on their business in the next six months, while 46 per cent expect this to last over a 12-months period. The survey titled, COVID-19 India Readiness Survey, noted that 19 per cent expect an adverse impact to last over a two-year period, while only 5 per cent of organisations expect a positive business impact within the next 12 to 24 months. "The tough economic conditions and anticipated business impact could drive organisations to consider workforce optimisation," said Rohit Jain, Head of India, Willis Towers Watson. As per the survey, almost one in three respondents anticipate that their 2020 annual bonus for executives and employees will be impacted, while 17 per cent expect an impact on their 2020 Long Term Incentive plans. "March to April is the performance review period and we're seeing organisations adopting a wait-and-see approach. " Most organisations are likely to consider the options of selective increments for critical skill staff, defer staff increments by three to six months, or even do away with increments altogether if the adverse circumstances prevail," said Rajul Mathur, Consulting Head, Talent and Rewards, Willis Towers Watson, India. The survey found that 42 per cent of respondents have not taken a decision on salary increment budgets for this year, while 33 per cent indicated that performance appraisals and bonus pay-outs will happen as planned. Moreover, 77 per cent said that there will be no reduction in salaries and 53 per cent responded that there have been no adjustments to the sales incentive pay-outs. "Employers should take an emphatic and considerate approach and evaluate options such as staff redeployment, reduced working hours/days, long service leave, sabbatical, furlough, hiring freeze and voluntary pay cuts, before any serious consideration of a workforce reduction," Jain said. The survey was conducted from March 20 to 31, 2020 and data was collected from nearly 417,000 employees working across sectors such as Financial Services, Healthcare, IT & Telecom, Manufacturing, Public Sector & Education and Wholesale & Retail. |

How to Avoid Binge Eating when Stressed Posted: 21 Apr 2020 05:00 PM PDT Managing stress is really hard sometimes, and binge eating might feel like the only way you can cope. Binge eating is a response to stress because your body releases the appetite boosting hormone cortisol as a response to stress.[1] However, binge eating usually makes your problems worse and often leads to weight gain, so you likely want to stop. Combat your cravings by distracting yourself, dealing with your emotions, and learning new ways to cope with stress. Additionally, fight temptation by removing trigger foods and taking good care of yourself. [Edit]Steps[Edit]Distracting Yourself from Your Cravings
