CAMP PENDLETON, California — US Marine Corps 60 mm mortar teams can drop explosive rounds on their enemies from over 1,000 meters away, and Insider recently had the opportunity to watch them do it.
During a visit to Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Insider observed a mortar crew firing off multiple rounds using an M224 60 mm light mortar, which is a high-angle-of-fire weapon that can be drop- or trigger-fired.
The training was carried out as part of the latest iteration of Iron Fist, an exercise that involves various training evolutions leading up to a large amphibious assault.

A senior intelligence official told lawmakers that Russia is interfering in the 2020 election to re-elect Donald Trump, it emerged Thursday.
The New York Times revealed that the official was part of a briefing to the House Intelligence Committee, which is chaired by Democratic Trump enemy Adam Schiff, and told lawmakers of both parties about Russia's backing for a second Trump term.
The committee members were briefed that Russia favors Trump, CNN reported, and were also told about its efforts to hack and attack election infrastructure and the Kremlin's continued attempts to use social media platforms in its campaign of distrust.

The U.S. military is cautious about the role it is playing in Syria while the State Department is eager to step in and help Turkey as it tussles with Russia.
Russia and Turkey are headed towards a Cold War nightmare scenario after fighting between the two major powers in Syria left two Turkish soldiers dead.
Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad is driving his forces into Idlib, the last rebel-held stronghold in Syria, with Russian support. Turkey faces a humanitarian crisis on its borders as up to two million Syrians fleeing Assad's rule are left with nowhere else to go, and Turkish forces have entered Idlib to stop the offensive. Now, the United States is mulling over its response to the escalating tensions.
The fresh concerns about America's role in the region come on the heels of an airstrike by either Russian or pro-Assad forces, which killed two Turkish soldiers during a rebel counter-offensive east of Idlib on Thursday. In response, the Turkish military has reportedly asked the United States to deploy anti-aircraft missiles and launch air patrols in Turkey in order to deter Russia.
"The North Atlantic Treaty Organization [NATO] has never seen fighting of this intensity this close to the border of a member state," said Amb. Robert Ford, the last U.S. ambassador to Syria, at a Thursday press conference at the U.S. Capitol.
WNU Editor: I do not see the U.S. or NATO rushing in to help Turkey. And they are certainly not going to positioned themselves in a World War III scenario with Russia. Turkish President Erdogan has been threatening and insulting the U.S. and European nations for years. His military involvement in Libya coupled with his territorial demands on Cyprus have further alienated him from his traditional allies. Bottom line. This is a mess that Turkey will need to solve on its own.

From Syria to Libya to Palestine, Erdogan is staking Turkey's claim to be a power player in the Middle East - by turning unmitigated losses into strategic wins
One might be forgiven for thinking that Turkey's recent attempts to go it alone in international military adventures, from Syria to Libya, have been an unmitigated disaster.
In those conflicts, Turkey is either supporting a losing side, or contributing to a stalemate. However, Ankara's priority in Syria and elsewhere is not necessarily to back a winner. Its aim, is to carve a stake in its near abroad, and to ensure that other powers sufficiently recognize Turkish interests.

World health officials said Thursday that the new coronavirus has not yet spread widely around the world, but emphasized that the virus could break out globally at any time.
"The number of cases in the rest of the world is very small compared to what we have in China, but that may not stay the same for long," World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters at the organization's headquarters in Geneva on Thursday.
The Marine Corps wants to overhaul its force to prepare to be more dispersed and more flexible to deter and, if need be, take on China's growing military in the Pacific.
"China has moved out to sea, and they have long-range weapons and a lot of them," Marine Corps Commandant Gen. David Berger said on February 11 at an Amphibious Warship Industrial Base Coalition event on Capitol Hill.
"Those two things have changed the game," Berger added. "Take those away, in other words, we could keep operating with dominance everywhere we wanted to, as we have. We cannot do that. We can't get stuck in old things. We are being challenged everywhere."

Latest request came earlier this month as Ankara also asked Washington for two batteries of Patriot missile systems to shield border area from air attacks
Turkey has asked the US to conduct aerial patrols in its airspace bordering the Syrian province of Idlib to show support for Ankara's ongoing military operations against forces loyal to Damascus, a Turkish official told Middle East Eye.
The latest request came earlier this month in meetings with US Special Envoy James Jeffrey in Ankara, where Turkish officials also asked Washington for two batteries of Patriot missile systems to shield the border area from possible air attacks, the official told MEE on condition of anonymity.
Since then, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a phone call with US President Donald Trump, but the White House has not given any indications that it would provide tangible support for Turkey's operations along its southern border.
"He [Trump] promised that he would sanction the regime officials, or anyone involved in attacks against the civilians. And that he would issue strong-worded statements," the official said. "But he didn't commit himself to anything involving the military, yet."
WNU Editor: Turkey knows their planes will be shot down if they enter Syrian airspace. Hence the request to the Americans. It is amazing how quickly relations can change in the Middle East. Did Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan Threw US President Trump's Letter Into A 'Garbage Bin'? (October 17, 2019). Now he is pleading for help.
Turkey's Defence Minister Hulusi Akar said during a televised interview on Thursday the United States could deploy U.S.-made Patriot batteries on its southern border to provide protection.
The United States could support Turkey militarily amid escalated tensions in Syria's last rebel-held province of Idlib by deploying Patriot batteries on its border, Akar said. "The United States may have Patriot support," he said.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan last week said Turkey plans striking Russian-backed Syrian forces by air in Idlib.
Citing a senior Turkish official, Bloomberg reported on Thursday that Turkey had asked the United States to deploy two U.S.-made Patriot batteries on Syria border.
Opposition fighters making headway around strategic town of Saraqeb, backed by Turkish commandos and artillery
Two Turkish soldiers were killed and five more wounded by a pro-Syrian government forces air strike in northwestern Syria, Ankara's defence ministry said on Thursday, as fighting heated up around the Idlib province town of Neirab.
In retaliation, 50 Syrian government soldiers were killed, and five tanks, two armoured personnel carriers, two armoured trucks and one howitzer destroyed, the ministry claimed.
The statement did not say if warplanes belonging to Damascus or its ally Russia were responsible for the strikes against Turkish forces.
Meanwhile, Turkey-backed rebels pushed towards Neirab, a town in Idlib province's west recently taken by forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.
A huge cyber-attack which knocked out more than 2,000 websites in the country of Georgia last year was carried out by Russia, according to Georgia, the UK and the US.
The UK government says that the GRU (Russian military intelligence) was behind the "attempt to undermine Georgia's sovereignty".
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab described it as "totally unacceptable".
Russia's Foreign Ministry denied any involvement, the RIA news agency said.
The UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) found that the GRU was "almost certainly" behind the attacks, which affected pages including Georgia's presidential website and the country's national TV broadcaster. It said the attack was the first significant example of GRU cyber-attacks since 2017.
I am convinced that the killing and the maiming must stop, the deputy leader of the Taliban writes.
When our representatives started negotiating with the United States in 2018, our confidence that the talks would yield results was close to zero. We did not trust American intentions after 18 years of war and several previous attempts at negotiation that had proved futile.
Nevertheless, we decided to try once more. The long war has exacted a terrible cost from everyone. We thought it unwise to dismiss any potential opportunity for peace no matter how meager the prospects of its success. For more than four decades, precious Afghan lives have been lost every day. Everyone has lost somebody they loved. Everyone is tired of war. I am convinced that the killing and the maiming must stop.
We did not choose our war with the foreign coalition led by the United States. We were forced to defend ourselves. The withdrawal of foreign forces has been our first and foremost demand. That we today stand at the threshold of a peace agreement with the United States is no small milestone.
Our negotiation team, led by my colleagues Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and Sher Mohammed Abas Stanekzai, has worked tirelessly for the past 18 months with the American negotiators to make an agreement possible. We stuck with the talks despite recurring disquiet and upset within our ranks over the intensified bombing campaign against our villages by the United States and the flip-flopping and ever-moving goal posts of the American side.
Even when President Trump called off the talks, we kept the door to peace open because we Afghans suffer the most from the continuation of the war. No peace agreement, following on the heels of such intensive talks, comes without mutual compromises. That we stuck with such turbulent talks with the enemy we have fought bitterly for two decades, even as death rained from the sky, testifies to our commitment to ending the hostilities and bringing peace to our country.
We are aware of the concerns and questions in and outside Afghanistan about the kind of government we would have after the foreign troops withdraw. My response to such concerns is that it will depend on a consensus among Afghans. We should not let our worries get in the way of a process of genuine discussion and deliberation free for the first time from foreign domination and interference.

Russian President Vladimir Putin faced what appeared to be a rare unscripted grilling from a Russian woman who asked him how much he earns and whether he could live on her income of $170 a month.
While visiting his native city of Saint Petersburg on Wednesday, Putin had laid a wreath at a political mentor's grave and was approached by people passing nearby, who filmed him on cell phones.
A woman in a hooded coat pushed through and immediately asked Putin: 'Please tell me, is it possible to live on 10,800 rubles ($170)?'

February 20, 2020 – NBC News and MSNBC once again made television history with the most-watched Democratic debate ever, averaging nearly 20 million total viewers across the two networks, according to Nielsen Fast National Data. Last night's debate was also the top-rated Democratic debate ever in the key A25-54 demo and attracted 13.5 million live stream viewers, surpassing any previously hosted debate this election cycle. NBC News and MSNBC now claim the top two Democratic debates and top three Democratic debate nights.
The ninth DNC-sanctioned debate of the 2020 presidential election, which also marked former Mayor Mike Bloomberg's debut, averaged 19.658 million television viewers, with 5.310 million in A25-54 and 4.257 million in A18-49 across NBC and MSNBC from 9:00-11:00 pm ET.

AZAZ, Syria/ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish forces and Syrian rebels fought government troops in northwest Syria on Thursday and Russian warplanes struck back in a sharp escalation of an intense battle over the last rebel bastions, Russian and Turkish officials said.
The Turkish Defense Ministry said two of its soldiers were killed and five were wounded in Syrian government air strikes in Idlib, bringing Turkish military fatalities to 15 this month in the Idlib region. It said more than 50 Syrian soldiers had been killed in retaliation.
Earlier, talks between Moscow and Ankara, who back different sides in Syria's nine-year war, had failed to reach a compromise to ease the situation and head off a direct confrontation between them in Aleppo and Idlib provinces.
* Iran's perceptions of the threats it faces combined with its weakness in other military areas will continue to drive its desire to develop ballistic and cruise missiles. * Iranian missile research and development efforts have increasingly focused on improving the reliability, accuracy and effectiveness of its missile systems to give them more tactical utility. * Attacks over the past two years show that while Iranian missiles have become more accurate, improvements in accuracy remain a work in progress.
Greater attention will be given to Iran's missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) programs from now on. The September drone attacks on the Abqaiq and Khurais oil facilities in Saudi Arabia and the January missile attack on two military bases in Iraq that left 109 U.S. military members diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries highlighted Iran's increased willingness to use its missile and UAV arsenal for tactical and strategic objectives.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday quashed rumors she would consider being former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg's vice presidential running mate.
"Oh no," Clinton said when asked the question during a Vocero interview while in Puerto Rico for a Clinton Global Initiative event. "I'm just waiting and watching as this plays out. I will support whoever the nominee is."
Matt Drudge first reported on Saturday that Bloomberg was considering Clinton as his running mate, but the story was not confirmed, according to Fox News. The Bloomberg campaign replied to these reports saying, "We are focused on the primary and the debate, not VP speculation."
Forget Lincoln and Douglas. Forget Nixon and Kennedy. Hell, forget the Athenians and the Melians back during the Peloponnesian War. Last night's Democratic primary slagfest in Nevada was the greatest debate in all of human history.

It's not that the gloves were off. No, my friends, everybody was wearing steel-tipped boots and going right for the crotch. Those weren't snowflakes. They were nunchucks.

'I am pleased to announce that our highly respected Ambassador to Germany will become the Acting Director of National Intelligence. Rick has represented our Country exceedingly well and I look forward to working with him,' Trump tweeted just before he started a rally in Phoenix, Arizona.
The appointment will make history with Grenell, 53, becoming the first openly gay cabinet secretary.

After over two years of sporadic Israeli air and missile attacks inside Syria, which Syria's military has been more aggressive in responding to of late, Israel has issued a rare statement revealing its medium to long-term strategy, saying it will soon step up "offensive action" in the country to ensure Iranian fighters depart.
Speaking to Ynet News on Wednesday the new Israeli Defense Minister, Naftali Bennett said, "We will go from preventive action to offensive action — the only measure that guarantees us the expulsion of Iran out of Syria."

Although altercations involving U.S. and Russian forces have seen a spike in recent weeks, duking it out on a highway is something new.
Details about the incident are still limited, but a video has emerged online showing a U.S. military M-ATV mine-resistant vehicle running a Russian Tigr armored utility vehicle off the road somewhere in northeastern Syria. The incident reportedly occurred relatively close to where American troops found themselves in a standoff a mob of civilians and militiamen aligned with Syrian dictator Bashar Al Assad a week ago. Russian forces were also present during that altercation, which ultimately left at least one Syrian dead.
A camera inside what appears to be a civilian vehicle also traveling along the same stretch of road captured the incident, which reportedly took place near the town of Qamishli, which is also near the Turkish border. It is unclear when exactly the events in the video actually occurred.
WNU Editor: The U.S. military has said that they are going to investigate this incident .... CENTCOM reviewing road clash incident between U.S. and Russian forces in Syria (Military Times). Others are saying that this sends a strong message .... Forcing Russian vehicle off Syrian road, US military sends a strong message (Tom Rogan, Washington Examiner). My take is different. This could have been a disaster. The U.S. military vehicles were moving very slowly on the highway. Probably deliberately because the Russian vehicles were behind them. One of the Russian drivers does what anyone would do on a highway when someone is slow in front of them, they try to pass them. This was not to be in this case, hence the incident. People could have easily been killed, as witnessed by a Syrian who quickly jumped away at the last second when both vehicles were barrelling towards him. The smaller Russian military vehicle could have also flipped over, and if that happened I could only imagine what would have happened after that. Russian Special Forces, like U.S. Special Forces, do not like to be pushed around, and they will retaliate thereby setting the stage for a serious escalation and God only knows what.

NEW DELHI: The government is working on all options, including deferring carrier dues other than adjusted gross revenue (AGR) liabilities, to ensure Vodafone Idea isn't forced to close, the sector remains viable and no jobs are lost, said a top government official. The government is not planning to introduce an ordinance to change the definition of AGR to help state-run companies such as GAIL, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd and Oil India Ltd, he said. These companies need to approach the telecom tribunal against the demand notices issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and get relief as indicated by the Supreme Court, he said."Our dilemma is on one side we need to follow the Supreme Court's order, secondly, take money from telcos and thirdly, keep them alive. But our stand is very clear, the government doesn't want a monopoly in this country," the person said. "There is so much financial pressure and such stress in the sector… We have to find a solution keeping all this in mind. The DoT is exploring all possible ways to find a solution, which includes deferment of dues to the government other than AGR." 74234588 Relief to Voda IdeaHe added that the DoT is exploring the possibility of seeking the solicitor general's legal opinion on the need to invoke bank guarantees since telecom companies have started paying the government as per the Supreme Court's order."Invoking bank guarantees at such a time might frustrate their efforts to comply with the Supreme Court order," the official said, adding that prima facie, the top court had given the companies time till March 17 to pay the full amount. That's the date when modification pleas filed by the telcos will be heard by the Supreme Court. Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel have sought to be allowed to negotiate with the DoT on modalities and longer timelines for payment of dues."In any case, calculation of bank guarantee will also take some time as it has to be computed for different circles," the official added. The comments by the official will come as a relief to cash-strapped Vodafone Idea, which has urged the DoT not to encash bank guarantees to recover liabilities. If that happens, the telco has said it will have to close."Invoking bank guarantees will mean companies will go bankrupt and then so many employees will lose jobs," the official said.Vodafone Idea has so far paid Rs 3,500 crore of the Rs 57,000 crore dues estimated by the DoT. The telco though has estimated its dues at around Rs 23,000 crore, of which Rs 7,000 crore is the principal. But experts said that, given its financial condition, the telco may not be able to pay even this if it has to do so in a short period of time.Bharti Airtel has paid Rs 10,000 crore of its dues to the government and said it will pay the rest as per its self-estimate before March 17. The DoT's AGR estimate for the telco is nearly Rs 40,000 crore but ET has reported that Airtel's own assessment puts it at half that sum."The amount the telcos pay could be different from DoT's calculations, which is a matter of calculation and debate and can be resolved later," the official said. "The main point is, in principle, the companies have started to pay substantial amounts towards AGR dues."He though added that the DoT will examine through random test checks, any deviation between telcos' AGR calculations and the department's estimates, before March 17.The checks will be done for all telcos but will start with the likes of Tata Teleservices which has paid Rs 2,197 crore and said it was the full and final payment. On Wednesday, Vodafone Idea chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla and managing director Ravinder Takkar met telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and telecom secretary Anshu Prakash to seek relief and discuss the wider implications for the economy and jobs. Birla and Bharti Airtel chairman Sunil Mittal also met finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman to press for relief for the sector. On Thursday, Mittal met Prasad, and sought steps, including lowering of taxes, to ensure the sector remained viable."The AGR has been a major crisis for the industry that is being dealt with by the government," Mittal told reporters after meeting Prasad. "This government is very focused on reviving sustainability of the sector. All these meetings which are happening reflect how the government is alive to the situation of the sector."Vodafone Idea jumped 5% to close at Rs 4.40 on the BSE on Thursday. Bharti Airtel closed 0.4% higher at Rs 545.50.ET reported on February 19 that the government has called on cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba to help chalk out steps to try and ensure that no telco shuts down, given the fact that a Vodafone Idea collapse will have an impact across sectors, lead to job losses, hit the broader economy and taint the global perception of India. The official cited above, however, blamed the telcos themselves for the current crisis, saying they should have set aside the dues after a Supreme Court order of 2011 clarified the definition of AGR or paid up the money back then, when the dues were much smaller."In 2003, when we migrated from revenue sharing to licence regime, the terms of the licence clearly imposed upon you the obligations to pay the AGR. Right or wrong is not the issue, at that time you accepted the obligation with an open mind," he said. "So, how come, you never factored this into your books of accounts?"In 2011, the amount was just about Rs 2,000 crore each, he pointed out."Now, when the Supreme Court has lashed out at you, suddenly you are raining money on the DoT," he said. "Had the telcos paid up earlier, this situation wouldn't have arisen."The Supreme Court settled a 16-year dispute by ruling on October 24 that AGR includes non-core items, leaving 15 telcos, including Vodafone Idea and Airtel, facing dues of over Rs 1.64 lakh crore, and triggering a period of intense turmoil in the industry, just recovering from over three years of brutal competition. The court also already rejected review petitions filed by the telcos, prompting them to file the modification plea.
Mumbai: Tata Sons has infused Rs 20,000 crore of growth capital into group companies over the last three years even as legacy issues in telecom and power, and challenging global business environment have kept chairman N Chandrasekaran on his toes since he took charge in February 2017.Chandrasekaran has been juggling capital allocation between write-offs and chasing growth, and the group has been investing heavily in its flagship businesses of steel, vehicles and power, though the benefits of these investments are still work in progress. Between FY17 and FY19, Tata Steel, Tata Motors and Tata Power have together employed Rs 74,000 crore in their businesses, even as consumer-focused group companies such as Titan, Trent, The Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) and Tata Global Beverages (TGBL) grew faster than them. The group's largest company TCS is the only flagship that has done well in recent times with its market capitalisation (m-cap) rising almost 80% since Chandrasekaran's appointment. This has helped total m-cap of group companies to rise by 45% to Rs 12 lakh crore during this period. A top group official said Tata Sons will undertake some portfolio restructuring once immediate issues relating to Tata Steel Europe and Tata Power are solved."There are tough decisions that will be taken in terms of portfolio restructuring to reduce our corporate footprint to have a mix of growth and cash businesses," the official said without giving a timeframe for the proposed business corrections that could take "a year more or immediate". 74234910 "There is clearly growth in the domestic businesses of Tata Steel post the expansion and that's a profitable business… more so, after we solve the Tata Steel Europe issues, which is guzzling a lot of cash," the official said on condition of anonymity. "Same for Tata Power where all the working capital costs related to Mundra are being funded by non-Mundra businesses."Tata Sons will also launch Tata Digital — a new entity to incubate new digital businesses announced in August last year — in a few months, the official said."This is a test match for us, and we have to keep moving," he said. "What we are seeking to do is create a balanced portfolio that will have capital-intensive businesses, consumer businesses and new-age businesses."Group watchers said the chairman would need five to seven years to get the group going in terms of growth. "It took a lot of approvals and time to demerge the consumer business from Tata Chemicals to build TGBL as the next big FMCG company. So many such efforts are in the works and will yield results. One cannot get impatient with effort of this magnitude," the official said.Former Tata Sons director R Gopalakrishnan said Chandrasekaran has adapted well to the challenges where his leadership and actions have been supported by the board. "For any new CEO, several deep challenges will await attention and action," he said. "These have to be dealt with great care and sensitivity. So long as such items appear on the CEO's attention screen, boards and shareholders grant time and space. This is the highly desirable characteristic of adaptive and long-life organisations."CONSUMER FIRMS TO THE FOREWhile most flagships have been struggling, the group's consumer firms have compensated for them. Top four valuecreating companies of the group in the past three years are Trent (+210%), Titan (+191%), Tata Global Beverages (+170%) and Voltas (+102%).Trent and Titan have seen their sales grow at near 20% from FY17 to FY19. Voltas and Tata Global Beverages have grown relatively slower at low single digit, but better prospects have led to higher investor interest in them.Tata Sons is doing all it can to solve immediate issues, a top official said. "Some changes are visible and some are not; there cannot be dramatic changes immediately," the person said. "The group has also been distracted with a lot of legal issues relating to NCLAT (National Company Law Appellate Tribunal) and telecom AGR (adjusted gross revenue) which has been distracting."Over the last three years, major capital investment decisions taken by group companies include heavy investments in research and development for JLR of around £10 billion, and aggressive acquisition of Bhushan Steel for Rs 35,000 crore at the peak of steel cycle in 2018, which many analysts and industry peers feel the group has overpaid.Tata Motors has employed more than Rs 2 lakh crore till date and its market capitalisation is only Rs 52,000 crore, down 65% in three years. It has massively underperformed peers including Mahindra & Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki.Similarly, Tata Steel has employed Rs 1.8 lakh crore and its m-cap is only Rs 50,000 crore, down 6% in three years. It has massively underperformed peers including JSW Steel and Jindal Steel.Tata Power has employed Rs 70,000 crore and its m-cap is Rs 15,000 crore, down 39% in three years. It, too, has sharply underperformed peers including Adani Power and JSW Energy. The total net debt of all group companies stands at Rs 1.7 lakh crore as of FY19. "The net debt levels are at very comfortable levels. So that is clearly manageable and not a worry at all," a Tata Sons official said.Defending the group performance, a former Tata Sons official said a conglomerate like Tatas would have commitments in markets such as the UK that it cannot walk away from. The group has been criticised by watchers for committing to huge write-offs and impairments which it is felt should have been challenged legally. "It is very easy to sit in armchairs and make judgements, but please understand that the group is not a teashop," the person said. "Tatas have been able to raise money even in the deepest financial crisis environment because of the values and commitment they stood for."Former Tata Brand custodian Mukund Rajan said, "The financial data demonstrates that the so-called 'hot-spots' identified by Cyrus Mistry across sectors like telecoms, steel, automobiles and power continue to present significant challenges for the Tata Group. A huge reliance on TCS' fortunes is also evident. This is a time when one would hope the best minds available from all stakeholder groups come together as a team and work to address these issues, and, critically, sort out the corporate governance questions that loom large."
By: Mihir SharmaIf there's one thing everyone knows about President Donald Trump, it's that he loves a captive audience — the larger and more enthusiastic, the better. This is one of the many things he has in common with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Next week, both of them will have a chance to indulge their shared passion. Trump is to visit New Delhi and Modi's home town of Ahmedabad — and the president has said that he expects seven million people to greet him there, although Twitter was swift to note that that would be 80% of the city's population, which is perhaps unlikely. What is certain is that Modi and Trump will headline a rally opening Ahmedabad's new cricket stadium, the world's largest, in front of 125,000 people. Like most Americans, Trump might be a trifle unsure about what cricket is, but both leaders considered the last rally they attended together, in Houston last year, a roaring success.Aside from putting the two adulation-hungry politicians in front of crowds, the policy goals of Trump's trip are unclear. Some in New Delhi hope that it will restore a bit of dynamism to the relationship, given that India's stock in Washington is not very high at the moment. Modi's embrace of Trump has served to alienate many Democrats, including many of the contenders for the party's presidential nomination. But even some Republicans have expressed dismay at recent divisive actions by Modi's government. Recently, Senator Lindsey Graham and India's foreign minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, had an unusually testy exchange at the Munich Security Conference about Kashmir.India's status as a fast-growing large economy often serves to paper over such concerns, but economic growth has cratered recently. Trade relations have also declined sharply, with Trump saying that "we're not treated very well by India, but I happen to like Prime Minister Modi a lot." This month, the U.S. declared that India would no longer be treated as a developing country when it comes to trading rules, which is very bad news for Indian exporters. Any hope that a reinvigorated trading relationship would emerge from the visit was dashed by Trump. The president said that he was "saving the big trade deal for later on." In fact, the U.S. Trade Representative recently cancelled a visit to India because nothing was expected from it.A lot has changed in just a few years. In the years after George W. Bush and Manmohan Singh signed the Indo-U.S. nuclear agreement, which essentially formalized India's status as a nuclear power, a genuine sense of optimism about bilateral ties prevailed. But multiple recent disappointments have caused these expectations to sour; there is a new and cynical tone to how the two capitals talk about each other. In that context, any visit by an American president is good news, even if nothing comes of it — at least it will keep the conversation going, and hope alive. We should, in fact, expect at least a little forward movement, if only to satisfy both leaders' demands for good press. One bit of good news would be if Westinghouse finally got to sell its nuclear reactors to India. Policymakers in Washington have complained for a decade that Bush's big bet on India though the nuclear deal has not led to any payoff for U.S. companies; this might at least set those concerns to rest. Another giant irritant — to Trump at least — has been Indian tariffs on Harley-Davidson motorcycles, which are made in electorally crucial Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Indian officials have apparently promised to lower tariffs to "a single digit." In spite of severely strained defense budgets, India is also likely to buy two different sorts of military helicopters from the U.S., at a combined cost of $3.4 billion. New Delhi at least clearly wants to show its desire for bilateral relations to be restored to some kind of equilibrium. It has bet big on Trump being the person who makes that happen. That wager may be unwise; Trump has made no secret of his skepticism about trade. In any case, India's approach to the U.S. has always been predicated on the assumption that the relationship cannot be merely transactional. New Delhi's policymakers think that, since India's rise is in the U.S. interest, America must be prepared to give more to India than it will receive in return. But this doesn't sit easily with Trump's well-known disdain for America's "unequal" strategic relationships. I'm not sure how many stadiums full of cheering crowds it would take for Trump to jettison that principle.(Disclaimer: These views are the writer's own, and not Economictimes.com's)
NEW DELHI: The key to success in a sluggish job market – an MBA degree, even if it's not from the top six IIMs.Business schools other than the top six IIMs (Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Kozhikode, Lucknow and Indore) have seen a jump in average salaries and number of recruiters for the class of 2020. The top six do well pretty much every year. It's campuses just below them that have sprung a surprise.A tough business year seems to have put a premium on India's MBA talent, shows placement data from institutes like the Faculty of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Goa Institute of Management (GIM), IMI Delhi and even the younger IIMs at Kashipur and Raipur.Good placements in a bad year reflect businesses' commitment towards investing in talent as a long-term strategy, say placement heads, recruiters and HR experts. B-schools reached out to more companies this year, anticipating a slowdown — a strategy that yielded results.74234610 IIFT in Delhi received 310 offers this year compared with 279 in 2019 and 288 in 2018. The average salary at this institute increased marginally to Rs 20.48 lakh per annum with the highest offer at Rs 75 lakh. At FMS, the average salary was up 11%.Experts Aren't SurprisedAlso, for the first time 75% of the offers received by the FMS students were above Rs 20 lakh a year, the institute said.Prominent recruiters that visited Goa Institute of Management included companies such as Arcesium, Johnson & Johnson, Reliance Industries, Diageo, HDFC, Cognizant and JP Morgan. "The average and highest salaries are better, and even more companies have participated," said Ajit Parulekar, director of the institute. At IMI Delhi, top recruiters in terms of both salaries and offers include companies such as RPG Enterprises, Shell, Deloitte, Gartner, Nielsen, HCL Tech, Capgemini, HSBC, Citibank, American Express, RB and Whirlpool. IIM Kashipur received its first international offer this year. At IIM Raipur, almost 90% of the 206-strong batch has been placed.Experts aren't surprised at slowdown-busting job offers for MBAs. "These are investments. During a slowdown, one reduces spends and not investments," said Sarthak Raychaudhuri, vice president-HR, Asia at Whirlpool Corp.Cognizant India chairman Ramkumar Ramamoorthy explains: "To compete effectively in a world shaped by artificial intelligence, algorithms, bots…(companies need) a broader repertoire of skills that MBAs are well-suited for."Some say tougher times put a further premium on the talent. "Top talent will always be in demand. It's like a luxury market which is unaffected by economic swings. Organisations…have to win at the marketplace and therefore young and highquality talent will be in demand," said Pankaj Bansal, CEO, PeopleStrong.
Kolkata: The contribution of e-commerce to smartphone, television, air-conditioner and washing machine sales has gone up in 2019 from the previous year, which marketers attributed to continued shift of consumption habit and plethora of price aggressive online launches. Latest data from sales tracker GfK India showed the contribution of e-commerce to total smartphone sales has gone up to 35% in 2019 from 26% in 2018. For overall mobile phone sales, which include feature phones, the contribution is up to 19% from 14% in 2018.For televisions, online sales now account for one-fourth of the total market, up from 21% in 2018 though the overall market declined 2% last year.In white goods, e-commerce contribution has gone up by 1-2 percentage points in 2019. However, in the last two years, the contribution has almost doubled – 6% for refrigerators in 2019, up from 3% in 2017; 13% for washing machines from 7%; and 9% for ACs from 4% in 2017.Haier India president Eric Braganza said e-commerce can continue to become a bigger channel for smartphones and TVs, but for appliances it may grow up to 12-15% and then stabilise due to touch-andfeel factor in purchase decisions.GfK India's MD Nikhil Mathur said upsurge in online sales channel can be attributed to increasing internet plus mobile penetration and changing digital behaviour. He said as per its study, 58% of urban consumers surveyed agreed that they need the shops and services to be available all the times."Convenience, 24x7 availability, product choices, easy finance options and lucrative offers ahead of new launches have oiled the growth engine for e-commerce. Offline channel continues to play an important role in human touch, personalisation and satisfaction of shopping experience. Omni-channel presence will also continue to play an important role for marketers," Mathur said. 74235114 GfK is the only market intelligence firm in India which tracks actual sales to consumers unlike others, who track shipments that can include unsold stock as well. It recently released figures that showed sales growth of household appliances was best in three years. The researcher said new entrants in durable space are first targeting online channel to establish foothold in India and then graduating to offline stores.Online exclusive electronics brand BPL India COO, Manmohan Ganesh, said except for a few retailers, no one can match the wide product selection available online that is triggering the growth. "However, touch-and-feel is still important for appliances, even though such factors have disappeared for smartphones or TVs," he said. However, the growth of online sales has come down in 2019 compared to 2018 due to base effect, consumers yet to fully open their purses and the tightening of e-commerce norms by the government, industry executives said. For television and home appliances combined sales, online sales growth rate came down to 30% last year from 107% in 2018. Growth of online sales of smartphones, however, remained insulated, reporting 45% growth in last two years each. However, sales growth in e-commerce continued to outpace brick-and-mortar stores across categories in 2019 as well. GfK said for products like ultra HD TVs and smart TVs, the sales for 32-inch-plus screen sizes grew by 10% in offline stores versus 33% in online last year.

Shares of Vodafone Idea surged more than 45 per cent in the last two trading sessions after government indicated that the company's bank guarantees are unlikely to be encashed for now. Vodafone Idea has to pay over Rs 56,000 crore to the government as adjusted gross revenue (AGRs) dues.Analysts said the government's move suggests it could give the debt-laden company more time to repay.Vodafone Idea stock ended 5 per cent higher at Rs 4.40 on Thursday. The stock declined 38 per cent between February 13 and 18 after the Supreme Court rejected a plea by telecom firms including Vodafone for extension in the payment schedule and asked them to deposit an estimated Rs 1.47 lakh crore in past dues for spectrum and licences by March 17."The government could consider postponing or staggering other payments due to it, in order to give some flexibility to telcos to cough up money towards AGR (adjusted gross revenue) dues," ET reported on Wednesday, quoting an official.Vodafone Idea's ratings have been downgraded by as many as three rating agencies in the past two days.Rating agency Crisil, on Thursday, downgraded Vodafone's rating on the Rs 3,500 crore non-convertible debentures to 'B+' from 'BB' while continuing the rating on 'Rating Watch with Negative Implications'.
Indian companies lined up bonds worth Rs 42,271 crore for issue in the local market in just about a week after the Reserve Bank of India said it would infuse Rs 1 lakh crore through longterm repo operation (LTRO), pulling yields down. The amount was double of the Rs 21,307 crore they raised in the one week before the RBI's February 6 announcement, show data compiled by JM Financial Research, as companies rushed to take benefit of the fall in cost of funds.Companies usually take a few days after such announcements to issue bonds, as these deals are cut on the exchange bidding platform where they need to comply with certain regulations.L&T Infrastructure, Tata Motors, Bharti Airtel, HDFC, HDB Financial, ICICI Bank, Shriram Transport, National Highways Authority of India and Power Finance Corp have already sold bonds during the period, with an extension in some cases amid dropping yields, said market participants. The companies could not be contacted immediately for comment."Interest rate transmission has improved in markets with the latest RBI policy bringing in LTRO, which has created demand for shorter-duration (three- and four-year) papers and brought rates sharply down," said Shameek Ray, head of debt capital market at ICICI Securities Primary Dealership.74235180 "This has increased investor inflows into debt markets. Many more issuers are now planning to tap bond markets," he said. "This is an encouraging sign as better traction in debt capital markets will be a strong support for growth of the economy."The RBI, while announcing its monetary policy, said it would conduct LTRO whereby it would inject money into the banking system at the policy repurchase rate of 5.15% for one and three years. It has now begun the exercise. Market participants need to pledge government securities to avail of the benefit. The excess supply of funds has pulled rates on four-year and threeyear sovereign bonds down 28-37 basis points amid rising investor appetite since February 5. During the same period, the yield on 10-year benchmark paper fell about 10 basis points."Although the RBI did not cut rate in its February policy, the announcement of LTRO has lifted investor sentiment with many issuers rushing to tap surplus liquidity," said Ajay Manglunia, managing director–fixed income, JM Financial. "Companies are mainly going for shorter-duration money as yields dropped the most in that segment."The spread, or yield differential between a top-rated PSU and private corporate bonds, has narrowed to 50 basis points in the twoand three-year segments, compared with 60-70 basis points earlier in the calendar year, dealers said."With not much credit demand, there is also a bit desperation to deploy money," Aditya Birla Sun Life Mutual fund CEO A Balasubramanian said. "The bond market is gradually turning into a risk-on mode. Market rates are now almost aligned to the policy rate as surplus liquidity is adding to the scene."The banking system is sloshing in liquidity with excess cash of Rs 2-3 lakh crore."Investors are looking for trading gains as they subscribed to those debt papers," said Ritesh Bhusari, deputy general manager-treasury, South Indian Bank. "Foreign portfolio investors are also showing good interest to own shorter-duration papers as they face negative to soft interest rates globally."
Curly hair is a beautiful way to add style and body to your hair. However, curling your hair with a curling iron is a pain, and the heat can be damaging to your hair. If you'd like to curl your hair with pipe cleaners instead of a heating tool, make sure to bend the pipe cleaners in half, roll your hair on them smoothly, and separate your curls at the end to give your hair volume.
Brush your hair with a hairbrush. Start with the ends of your hair and work up to the roots. Make sure you brush your entire head of hair. This will help your curls look more smooth and the process of curling them go much faster.[1]
If you have wavy hair, brushing it might make it frizzy. The curling process will tone down any frizziness.
If you have dreadlocks or a protective braid style, do not brush your hair.
Spritz your hair with water to make it damp. Fill a spray bottle with room temperature water. Use the spray bottle to spritz your entire head of hair. Apply enough to get your hair damp, but not so much that your hair is dripping.[2]
If your hair is wet from the shower, wait for it to dry about halfway and then start sectioning it out.
Fold about 20 pipe cleaners in half and twist them together. A standard pipe cleaner is pretty thin. To give your curls more volume, fold a pipe cleaner in half and twist it around itself so that it stays together. Make enough pipe cleaners like this to cover your entire head.[3]
Wrap the ends of your hair around 1 pipe cleaner. Choose a section of hair about in width. The more hair you use, the larger your curls will look. Place a pipe cleaner at the end of your section of hair and wrap the ends tightly around it. Make sure the ends are smooth and don't have any bumps.[4]
If your hair isn't smooth on the pipe cleaner, your curls might be uneven.
Roll the pipe cleaner upwards while wrapping your hair around it. Hold the ends of your hair as you start to roll the pipe cleaner so that they don't fall off. Roll the pipe cleaner towards your roots as you wrap the hair over itself. Make sure the hair is smooth the entire time you are rolling.[5]
Bend the pipe cleaner back to secure it on your head. Once the pipe cleaner reaches your roots, bend it back about halfway through on top of your head. Make sure it is tight enough that your hair won't fall out of it.[6]
Adjust the pipe cleaner so that the metal part is not poking your scalp.
Cover your entire head with pipe cleaners. Repeat this section rolling until all of your hair is in a pipe cleaner roll. If you leave any hair out, it won't get curled. Make sure your pipe cleaners all feel tight and like your hair won't fall out of them.[7]
Leave the pipe cleaners in overnight. Let your pipe cleaners sit in your hair for at least 8 hours or while you sleep. The longer you keep them in, the longer your curls will hold. Try to avoid moving them around or adjusting them.[8]
If you are worried about sleeping in the pipe cleaners, place a shower cap on top of your head before you go to bed. This will protect your hair and the pipe cleaners.
[Edit]Removing the Pipe Cleaners and Separating Your Curls
Unwrap the pipe cleaners and unroll them from your hair. Gently unfold the pipe cleaners until your hair is loose. Unroll your hair gently, making sure you don't pull or straighten the curls. Remove the pipe cleaners from your curls completely as carefully as you can, trying not to create any frizz.[9]
Separate your curls by gently running your hands through the curls. Use your fingers to gently comb through your curls to add body. Run your hands along your scalp to give your hair even more volume. Do this until your curls look the way you want them to. [10]
If you'd like tighter, more defined curls, do not separate them.
Add hair oil to your hair if it is frizzy. Separating your curls can sometimes create too much volume that can lead to frizz. Spread a pea-sized amount of hair oil in your palms and gently apply it to the ends of your hair, or wherever it is frizzy. Try not to put too much near your scalp, or it can make your hair look greasy.[11]
You can find hair oil at most beauty supply stores.
While black mold sounds scary, it's really isn't much worse than other types of molds. Any mold can cause respiratory issues, and if you have asthma or you're susceptible to pneumonia, it could cause issues for you. However, the Center for Disease Control suggests that you can clean up all types of mold in your home the same way using a bleach solution without having to call out for extra help, as long as you take precautions like wearing gloves and a dust mask. However, if you have mold that has seeped into the wall or other porous areas, you may need help removing the damaged materials and replacing them, as well as finding the source of the water causing the mold.
Open the windows and doors in the area for ventilation. When using bleach, it's always a good idea to create good ventilation. Try to open as many nearby windows as you can, particularly if there's one in the bathroom.[1]
If there's not a window in the bathroom, place a fan blowing air out of the bathroom toward an open window.
Put on gloves and goggles. Choose gloves that won't let the mold through, such as rubber cleaning gloves or latex gloves. Don't touch the mold with your hands. Similarly, goggles are a good idea, as you don't want to flip mold spores into your eyes accidentally.[2]
You may also want to wear a dust mask that filters out mold.
These precautions will also protect you from the bleach.
Mix of bleach into of water. Measure out the water first, and then pour the bleach into the water. Use a spoon or a paint stick to stir it together so it is is well mixed. Try not to splash it as you're stirring.[3]
Make sure you never mix bleach with ammonia, as it creates toxic gases.
If you prefer, you can start out with an antifungal cleaning solution that doesn't contain ammonia, then follow up with bleach after you get most of the mold off.[4]
Dip a sponge or cloth into the bleach solution and scrub down the mold. Squeeze out the excess and begin scrubbing the moldy areas. Knock off as much mold as you can and dip the cloth or sponge back into the bleach solution as needed.[5]
You can also rinse out the cloth in running water before dipping it back in the solution so you're not returning as much mold to your cleaning solution.
Use a scrubbing brush where the mold won't come off. If you have areas where you're having trouble removing the mold, dip a toothbrush or other scrubbing brush into the cleaning solution. Run it over the moldy areas, using a small circular motion to get the mold off.[6]
Make a new bleach solution to spray and scrub down what's left. Once you've scrubbed away all you can, pour a new mixture of bleach and water into a spray bottle, keeping the same ratio as you did before. Spritz the stains left behind, and let it sit for 15 minutes or so.[7]
Once you've left it alone, run over it with a clean scrubbing brush. Wash off the bleach solution with clean water and let it dry.
Spritz plain white vinegar over the area to take care of what's left of the mold. Don't mix the vinegar with water. Just put it in a spray bottle and go over the area to get it damp. Let the vinegar dry on the area, and it will help kill off the mold that's left behind.[8]
Fix any leaks you can see. If a leak is causing the problem, it's time to take care of that! Replace leaky faucet heads, for instance, or if the leak is more than you can handle, call in a professional to find and fix the leak.[9]
If you don't fix the leak, the mold will just return.
Spray the area down with vinegar after every shower. To help prevent the mold from coming back, keep a spray bottle in your bathroom. Then, spray down the walls and tub after you get done with your shower. The vinegar will help kill the mold spores.[10]
If the smell bothers you, add a few drops of essential oil, such as peppermint, citrus, or tea tree oil, to help cover up the scent.
Air out the bathroom after you shower. If you have an exhaust fan, use it. If you don't, make sure to keep the door to the bathroom open after you shower so the air can dry out. Too much humidity in a small space can lead to mold.[11]
If you don't have an exhaust fan, try placing a fan in the door to blow the air into the rest of your home.
Clean the bathroom once a week. Use a disinfecting cleaner to go over your shower and scrub it down. Pick a day to do it each week to make it easier to remember, and set up a reminder if you forget.[12]
Make sure to change out your sponge or cleaning brush regularly, as it can grow mold, too.
Use your air conditioning in the summer to keep the humidity low. Pulling humidity out of the air is one of your AC's main jobs, so you should run it in the summer when it's humid out. If you don't have an AC, try using a dehumidifier to reduce the humidity.[13]
If possible, keep the humidity in your home under 60%. Today's smart thermostats often have a way to change the humidity, at least in the summer. In the winter, it shouldn't be much of an issue.
Thinking before you speak is an important skill to master for all kinds of situations. It can improve your relationships with other people and enable you to express yourself in a more effective way. Start by using the THINK acronym to decide if what you have to say is True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, or Kind. Then, look for ways to choose your words more carefully, such as by pausing and asking for clarification. You can also think before you speak by using thoughtful communication strategies, such as adopting open body language and focusing on making 1 point at a time. With a little practice, thinking before you speak will eventually become second nature to you.
Determine if what you want to say is True. Reflect on what you are about to say and ask yourself if it's the truth. Don't make something up just to have something to say and don't speak if you're about to tell a lie. If you need to respond with something, at least modify what you're about to say so that it is the truth.[1]
For example, if someone asks, "How are you today?" and you're about to respond with something that's not true, stop yourself and tell the truth instead.
Or, if you're telling someone how well you did on your math test and you're about to exaggerate, reel yourself in and be honest about your grade instead.
Say something if it's Helpful or stay silent if it's not. Speaking up can be beneficial to other people if you have something to say that might be helpful to them, so if this is the case, go ahead and speak up.[2] On the other hand, saying something hurtful can harm your relationships with other people, so it's best to remain silent if you're considering saying something hurtful to someone.[3]
For example, if you're watching a friend play a video game and you have a tip that might help them overcome a difficult level, this could be helpful to them and it's okay to say it.
However, if you're watching a friend struggle to overcome a level on a video game and you are about to mock them for that, don't say anything.
Be aware that saying something hurtful isn't the same as conveying an unpleasant truth, which might be meant to help someone. For example, if you are giving someone constructive criticism, then this can be helpful.
Identify whether your comment might be Inspiring to other people. Saying something that will inspire, encourage, or uplift other people is always good to do. If you are about to pay someone a compliment, encourage them to keep working towards a goal, or tell them a story that might inspire them, do it![4]
For example, if you're about to compliment a friend on their presentation, go ahead. This will make them feel good about themselves.
Speak if your comment is Necessary. Sometimes speaking up is necessary to prevent something bad from happening, such as issuing a warning or delivering an important message to someone. If this is the case, speak up. But if what you are about to say is unnecessary, then don't speak.[5]
For example, if someone is about to walk out in front of oncoming traffic, speak up to warn them immediately.
Or, if your friend's mom calls and asks you to tell them to call, tell your friend this as soon as you see them.
Stop yourself from speaking if what you want to say is not Kind. Offering kind words to someone is another good way to determine if you should speak or not. As the old saying goes, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." Consider if what you're about to say is kind. If it is, go ahead and speak. If not, don't say anything.[6]
For example, if your friend shows up to your house wearing a flamboyant hat and dress, either pay them a compliment on their fashionable look if you think it looks good, or don't say anything at all if you're not a fan of the ensemble.
Listen carefully if you're having a conversation with someone. Listen when someone else is talking and give them your full attention. Focusing intently on the other person's words will help you to respond in a more thoughtful manner when they are finished talking.[7]
For example, if someone is telling a story about their weekend, give them your full attention so that you can ask them questions about it and comment sincerely on what they said.
Don't focus on what you want to say next while the other person is talking. You won't really be listening to them if you do this and you might respond with something that doesn't relate to what they were just saying.
Pause for a minute if you find yourself saying "um" or "uh." If you notice that you're doing a lot of umming and uh-hing, this usually indicates that you're unsure of what to say next and you're thinking out loud. If this happens, close your mouth and pause for a minute. Take the time to think about what you want to say before you continue.[8]
It's fine to simply say, "I need a minute to think about that," if someone asks you a question.
Clarify what the other person has just said by asking a question. If you're having a conversation with someone and unsure of how to respond to something they just said, ask them to clarify for you. Rephrase the statement they just made or the question they just asked and check to see if you're understanding them correctly.[9]
For example, you could say something like, "What did you mean when you said you didn't like the movie's structure?"
Or, you could say something like, "It sounds like you're saying you want to go home because you aren't feeling well. Is that right?"
This tip can also be used to pass time to think.
Take a few deep breaths or excuse yourself in tense situations. If you're in the midst of an argument or heated conversation with someone or if you're just feeling nervous about speaking, taking a few deep breaths is a good way to calm yourself down, collect your thoughts, and buy yourself a little extra time to think. Take a long, slow breath in through your nose to the count of 4, then hold it for 4 seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth to the count of 4.[10]
If you need a longer break to calm yourself down, try excusing yourself to use the restroom or take a quick walk around the block.
Stay focused on the conversation by avoiding distractions. It'll be easier for you to think before you speak if you aren't constantly looking at your phone, TV, or computer. Put away or turn off anything that might distract you from the person you're speaking with and focus all of your attention on them.[11]
It's fine to pause to remove distractions. Try saying something like, "Hang on one minute. I just want to turn off the TV so I can give you my full attention."
Demonstrate that you're listening by using open body language. Adopting open body language can help you to communicate with someone in a more thoughtful manner. Become more aware of how you're sitting or standing when you talk with other people. Some things you can do to improve your body language include:[12]
Facing towards the person rather than angling your body away from them.
Keeping your arms loose and at your sides instead of crossing them over your chest.
Make eye contact with the person you're talking to. Avoid staring off into the distance or looking around the room as this will send the message that you're not paying attention.
Keeping your expression neutral, such as by smiling slightly and relaxing your eyebrows.
Make 1 point at a time and offer additional information only if needed. If you tend to ramble or throw lots of information at people at one time, try to focus on making 1 point and supporting it with an example if needed. Then, pause for a minute to allow the other person to speak or ask questions and make another point or offer additional information if needed.[13]
For example, if someone asks you about your day, you might start by saying that it was good and list one good thing that happened instead of launching into a full recall of your day.
Or, if you're debating politics with someone, you could begin by offering your strongest point and its supporting evidence instead of listing off every reason why you hold the view that you do.
Summarize what you have said if needed and then be silent. After you finish saying what you have to say, it's fine to simply stop talking. There's no need to fill the silence with more words if you don't have anything else to say. If you feel the need for some kind of conclusion, briefly summarize what you just said and then stop talking.[14]
For example, you might say something like, "So basically, I had a very pleasant trip to Florida and I plan to go again next year."
However, it's also okay to end a story without summarizing it. When you're done telling the story, it's fine to just stop speaking.
Use these tips to prepare for a situation where you need to talk a lot:
Practice using the right body language for what you're saying. How you hold yourself is a critical factor in how your audience views what you're saying.
Create and listen to a playlist that inspires you. You want to get excited and pumped up about talking in front of or to people. You don't want the conversation to turn into a chore.
Stop and think about why you're speaking in the first place. Is your topic important to your intended audience, something that matters a lot to them? Remind yourself of how important your words are to these people.
