A 19-year-old British woman at the center of a high-profile rape case has received a four-month suspended sentence on a charge of public mischief in Cyprus, an activist present in the courtroom told TIME.
The woman, who has not been identified publicly, covered her face with a scarf as she arrived at Famagusta District Court in Paralimni, eastern Cyprus, on Tuesday, eight days after a judge declared her guilty of fabricating a rape claim.
In July 2019, she reported being raped by up to 12 Israeli men at the resort town of Ayia Napa. Ten days later, she retracted her statement but has since said that she was forced to do so under pressure by Cyprus police. The police have denied this claim.
On Tuesday, the young woman was accompanied by family and her legal team to the courthouse, where she was greeted by dozens of protesters and activists from Cyprus and Israel.
Her sentence was suspended for three years, and she was ordered to pay €148 ($165) in legal fees by the court. The sentence also means she is now free to return home to the UK; she had already spent more than a month in prison in Cyprus before being granted bail at the end of August, and has not been allowed to leave the island since.
Ahead of the sentencing, lawyers for the woman told TIME of what they say are problems with the way the case has been handled by authorities, including the woman’s detention without a lawyer for eight hours at a police station on July 27, when she made her retraction.
“The whole sequence of the various authorities and the way they treat violence against women is problematic,” says Nicoletta Charalambidou, a Cyprus-based lawyer on the woman’s legal team.
The case has sparked public outcry in Cyprus, the U.K. and Israel.
Demonstrations took place in solidarity with the woman on the eve of the sentencing in London and Tel Aviv. Carrying signs reading “We Believe You,” protesters chanted “Jail the rapists, not the victims” outside the courthouse as the sentencing was carried out. Speaking to the BBC, Lewis Power, a lawyer for the young woman, said the case was “not finished by any means” and that he would be appealing the conviction. “We will be seeking an expedited appeal to the Supreme Court of Cyprus and we will also be considering going to the European Court of Human Rights,” Power said.
MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) — Mexican authorities continued searching Monday for the gunmen responsible for an attack on a sparsely traveled stretch of highway near the Texas border that left a 13-year-old U.S. boy dead and four relatives wounded.
On Saturday night, a family traveling in two vehicles was attacked on a two-lane highway paralleling the U.S.-Mexico border in the township of Ciudad Mier.
One SUV of attackers passed the family and then cut them off causing them to collide and come to a halt. Gunmen then opened fire, according to a statement from the state of Tamaulipas security coordinating group. All of the wounded came from one of the family’s vehicles, both of which had Oklahoma license plates. The gunmen escaped in another vehicle.
Prosecutors identified the boy who was killed as Oscar Castillo López.
A 10-year-old relative was among those wounded. They were all taken to a hospital in Monterrey after initially being moved to a nearer small town hospital.
On Monday, Luis Enrique Orozco, a deputy in the Nuevo Leon state prosecutor’s office, said another boy was in critical condition along with a 48-year-old man. A 42-year-old woman was in stable condition, he said. The relationship between the adults and the children was unclear, but Orozco said the two wounded adults were siblings.
Tamaulipas state prosecutors at one point said the boy who died was 14 years old.
The family was returning to the U.S. after spending the holidays in the border state of Nuevo Leon, where Monterrey is located. Some members of the family are originally from the central Mexico state of San Luis Potosi, while some were born in the United States.
What remained unclear was why the family was on such a dangerous stretch of highway after dark.
The area where the attack occurred is contested by drug cartels.
For years Ciudad Mier was the uppermost edge of the Gulf cartel’s control and Nueva Ciudad Guerrero was the limit for the Nuevo Laredo-based Zetas’. Between them sits uninhabited scrub land.
In 2010, after the Zetas split from the Gulf cartel and established themselves as an organized criminal power through prominent displays of graphic violence, Mier became a battleground for the two cartels and most of its residents abandoned the quaint colonial town.
More recently, however, the Zetas’ splinter group known as the Northeast cartel has been as far downriver as Mier, Miguel Aleman and Camargo, well into what was traditionally the Gulf cartel’s territory.
Photographs from Saturday night’s crime scene showed the Northeast cartel’s Spanish initials — “CDN” — scrawled on the back window of one of the vehicles.
The latest U.S. State Department travel advisory in mid-December listed Tamaulipas state as “do not travel” due to the prevalence of crime and kidnapping.
“Heavily armed members of criminal groups often patrol areas of the state in marked and unmarked vehicles and operate with impunity particularly along the border region from Reynosa northwest to Nuevo Laredo,” the advisory said. That was where the family was driving.
(MANILA) — Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s campaign against illegal drugs has failed to substantially eradicate the menace and ensnare major drug lords and should be reformed to prevent further bloodshed, the country’s vice president said Monday.
Vice President Leni Robredo, who leads the opposition, also called for a stop to the dreaded police practice of home inspections that have led only to the killings of petty drug suspects.
It’s the latest criticism of Duterte’s notorious crackdown by the vice president and is likely to deepen the political divide between the two leaders.
Presidents and vice presidents are elected separately in the Philippines, resulting in candidates from rival parties like Duterte and Robredo ending up in the country’s top leadership and often colliding on policies.
Robredo said only about 1% of the estimated supply of methamphetamine, a powerful banned stimulant locally known as shabu, has been seized in the last three years, since the crackdown was launched by Duterte when he took office in mid-2016.
“Very clearly, based on official data, despite the killings of Filipinos and all the money spent, the amount of shabu and drug money we’ve seized has not gone beyond 1% of those in circulation,” Robredo said at a news conference.
“If we really want to end the scourge of illegal drugs, we need to run after the big suppliers and not just the small-time pushers,” Robredo said, adding the campaign would not succeed unless it’s reformed to be more strategic, better organized and closely supervised in all aspects by the president.
Her remarks were largely based on information gathered during a brief stint in a government anti-drugs committee, which Duterte asked her to help lead last year after being piqued by her constant criticisms of his bloody crackdown. Robredo surprisingly accepted the offer, but Duterte fired her after 18 days after she started seeking confidential information about the campaign.
Presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo dismissed Robredo’s statements, saying Duterte’s campaign has succeeded in closing many drug laboratories and forcing the surrender of a large number of drug suspects. Big-time drug lords have also been neutralized, Panelo said, although he failed to immediately provide a list of those key drug personalities.
“If you noticed, when she was threatening to release this report, she implied that there were some irregularities discovered, a bomb that would explode on your face. It’s a dud,” Panelo told reporters.
Robredo, a 54-year-old former human rights lawyer and political newcomer, has openly criticized the campaign against illegal drugs launched by Duterte, a longtime city mayor and state prosecutor known for his extra tough approach against criminality and brash speaking style.
Robredo has said she accepted Duterte’s offer last year to help oversee the crackdown despite warnings by her advisers and allies, so she may be able to save lives under the campaign.
One of her first moves was to request confidential documents from law enforcers, including a list of key drug suspects targeted under Duterte’s campaign. Duterte warned Robredo about sharing confidential information about the anti-drug campaign with his foreign critics, including human rights advocates.
It’s the latest twist in the unprecedentedly massive crackdown Duterte launched after he took office in June 2016. He promised to end illegal drugs and corruption in six months during the campaign but failed and later acknowledged that he was overwhelmed when he found out the immensity of the problems after becoming president.
More than 6,000 mostly petty drug suspects have been killed in the crackdown after allegedly resisting arrests and more than a million others have surrendered, officials say. But human rights groups have cited a higher death toll and accused some policemen of killing unarmed suspects based on flimsy evidence and altering crime scenes to make it look like the suspects violently fought back.
At least two complaints for mass murder have been filed before the International Criminal Court over the large-scale deaths, but Duterte and the police have denied condoning extrajudicial killings under the crackdown.
Duterte has warned that his bloody campaign will continue up to the last day of his presidency in June 2022.
WASHINGTON — Top Pentagon leaders said Monday that the United States has no plans to withdraw troops from Iraq, despite a draft letter from a senior military officer that appeared to suggest plans for withdrawal were underway.
Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters the U.S. is “moving forces around” Iraq and neighboring Kuwait. He said a draft letter circulated internally by a U.S. Marine commander was a “poorly written” honest mistake that should never have gotten out.
The draft letter appeared to suggest the U.S. was preparing to pull troops out of Iraq in response to a vote by the Iraqi Parliament over the weekend. The draft said troops would be “repositioning over the course of the coming days and weeks to prepare for onward movement.” and warned of an increase in helicopter travel around the Green Zone. It added, “We respect your sovereignty decision to order our departure.”
Milley and Defense Secretary Mark Esper, however, said the U.S. has been re-positioning troops, largely due to increased security threats from Iran. The letter was meant to coordinate with the Iraqi military on an increase in U.S. helicopter and troop movements as they shift positions around the country.
“There’s been no decision whatsover to leave Iraq,” Esper said. “There’s no decision to leave, nor did we issue any plans to leave or prepare to leave.”
Milley acknowledged that some language in the letter “implies withdrawal,” but said that ”is not what is happening.”
“The long and the short of it is, it’s an honest mistake,” he said, adding that he had just gotten off the phone with the U.S. commander in the Middle East, who explained the effort.
Esper said the U.S. remains committed to the campaign to defeat the Islamic State group in Iraq and the region.
Pro-Iran factions in the Iraqi Parliament have pushed to oust American troops following the killing of a top Iranian general in Baghdad in a U.S. drone strike last week.
On Jan. 3, the U.S. military carried out a drone attack in Iraq. The attack killed Qasem Soleimani, a top military leader from Iran. The action comes after increased tensions between the U.S. and Iran, and has fueled anxiety about what might happen as a result. The situation is dominating the news, and children who hear about it are likely to have lots of questions.
We realize this is a difficult topic to explain to kids. TIME for Kids is here to help. The guide below offers talking points for how to answer questions about this tough topic. It’s not intended to be used as a script. It’s meant to arm you with the information you need if you choose to bring up the topic or if kids ask questions about it.
Trust your instincts. You know your kids best. Use that knowledge to gauge the depth and breadth of your discussion. Sometimes, it’s best to let a child take the lead and only answer the questions that are asked. Often, brief and simple answers can satisfy a child’s curiosity.
Who was Qasem Soleimani?
Qasem Soleimani was a top military leader in Iran, a country in the Middle East.
Why did the U.S. take action against Soleimani?
President Donald Trump has called Soleimani a terrorist. Trump says Soleimani ordered attacks on American military and diplomats and was planning attacks against Americans in the Middle East. For this reason, Trump ordered the U.S. military to kill Soleimani. The drone attack took place at an airport in Baghdad, in Iraq. An Iraqi leader was also killed.
The U.S. strike came after a series of recent attacks by Iran against Americans in Iraq. On Dec. 27, a rocket strike killed one American civilian and wounded several U.S. service members. There was also a Dec. 31 attack on the U.S. embassy in Iraq. Trump says Soleimani ordered these attacks.
U.S. military leaders gave Trump several choices for how to respond to Iran’s actions. Killing Soleimani was considered the most extreme. Some top U.S. military and government officials have expressed surprise and concern about Trump’s decision. But the President insists it was in America’s best interest. “We will always protect our diplomats, service members, all Americans, and our allies,” Trump said in a Jan. 3 address from his resort in Palm Beach, Fla.
How has Iran responded following Soleimani’s death?
Iran has called for three days of national mourning. Thousands of people gathered in the streets of Iran’s capital, Tehran, to protest Soleimani’s killing. Funeral services were held in Iran on Sunday and Monday. Iranian leaders say they will take action against the U.S. At this time, however, it is unclear how or when they will do so. Still, some kind of action is expected.
Majid Takht Ravanchi is Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations. “We cannot just remain silent,” he told CNN.
What will the U.S. do if Iran retaliates?
On Jan. 3, President Trump warned Iran not to retaliate. If it does, he said, the U.S. is “ready and prepared to take whatever action is necessary.” A day later, Trump wrote on Twitter that the U.S. had targeted 52 Iranian sites, including places that are important to Iranian culture. But according to international law, strikes on cultural sites are illegal.
Why don’t the U.S. and Iran get along?
The U.S. and Iran have a difficult relationship. It’s been this way for many years. In 1979, Iran took 52 American diplomats and citizens hostage. They were released after 444 days.
In 2018, tensions increased again after President Trump said the U.S. would no longer participate in a 2015 deal with Iran. This international agreement set strict limits for 15 years on Iran’s ability to create nuclear weapons. In return, the U.S. and countries in the European Union agreed to end trade restrictions. When Trump pulled out of the agreement, the U.S. put trade restrictions back in place. This has hurt Iran’s economy.
Does the killing of Soleimani mean the U.S. and Iran are going to war?
Many people worry that the latest tensions between the U.S. and Iran could lead the U.S. to war in the Middle East. Following Soleimani’s death, the U.S. sent troops to the region. But President Trump has said he does not want war. “We took action last night to stop a war,” Trump said in his Jan. 3 address. “We did not take action to start a war.”
Others wonder if Americans will be required to join the U.S. military if the U.S. and Iran do go to war. But the U.S. ended the draft in the 1970s after protests against the Vietnam War. Neither the President nor Congress have indicated they would bring back the draft.
The United Nations (U.N.) says steps should be taken to avoid war and decrease tensions between the U.S. and Iran. António Guterres leads the U.N. “This is a moment in which leaders must exercise maximum restraint,” he said in a Jan. 3 statement.
If my child is feeling worried, what should I do?
Psychologist Paul Coleman, author of Finding Peace When Your Heart Is in Pieces, spoke to TIME’s Belinda Luscombe. He suggests following these SAFE steps:
Search for hidden questions or fears. Ask what else is on their mind about what happened, what their friends say about it, and what their biggest worry is right now.
Act. Keep routines going—homework, bedtime rituals, and so on—because they’re reassuring and distracting. “It is a good time to have them do kind things for others,” says Coleman.
Feel feelings. “Let them know their feelings make sense,” says Coleman. Let them talk it out and show that you understand.
Ease Minds. After you’re sure they’ve talked through their fears, you can assure them of their safety.
They wore masks and carried sticks. On the evening of Jan. 5, a mob stormed into India’s Jawaharlal Nehru University, one of the nation’s most prominent centers of learning and an institution long associated with left-wing politics. Both students and faculty were indiscriminately attacked, many were left beaten and bleeding. Ambulances were prevented from entering the campus. Political activist Yogendra Yadav was only one of many who observed that the police let the situation persist without intervening. Journalists posted a video of the masked individuals, who are alleged to be linked to India’s ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), being allowed to depart in complete freedom.
These events come after much of India has been engulfed in protests over a new citizenship law that treats Muslims differently to those from other religions. These protests , which have seen tens of thousands march across the nation, began in universities. The government’s reaction was swift and brutal. It encompassed both prohibitory measures, such as Internet shutdowns and the prevention of public assembly, as well as reactive measures, which included detention and violence. In Uttar Pradesh, a state which is home to more Indians than any other, the tales of police brutality would send a shiver down any spine.
Sunday’s attack underscores two crucial changes taking place in the world’s largest democracy. The first is to the country’s formal legal architecture. India’s founders, as I have suggested in a new book, India’s Founding Moment, imagined citizenship to be unmediated by community affiliation. For them, to belong to the modern world was to belong to representative framework where each person was treated on free and equal terms. Measures like the new citizenship law challenge and undermine this founding vision. The law enables “any person belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian community from Afghanistan, Bangladesh or Pakistan” to become an Indian citizen, thereby explicitly excluding Muslims.
India’s Constitution guarantees the right to equal treatment. This right applies to all persons and not only to citizens. To pass muster, a law has to make an intelligible distinction between those that it includes and those that it excludes. Moreover, this distinction has to bear a rational connection to the law’s objective. In this case, the stated objective is addressing the religious persecution of the enumerated classes. But the law does not capture this objective as it is both over- and under-inclusive. It does not provide protection to groups such as the Ahmadiyya Muslims from Pakistan and it assumes that all those who enter India from the specified classes are persecuted. This presumption is revealed by the fact that the law has no provisions relating to religious persecution at all, thus eliminating any link between the distinctions drawn and the declared aim.
The provisions make it clear that it is one’s religion that separates a person eligible for citizenship from an illegal migrant. Hindus and others belong to the former category; Muslims are condemned to the latter one. By using a religious-based test for membership, the law also breaches the Indian Constitution’s commitment to secularism, one that the Supreme Court has confirmed to be even beyond the power of a constitutional amendment. In a crucial decision in the early 1990s, the Court held that when a state government departs from secular principles, it amounts to the breakdown of constitutional machinery. But if the legal case against the law could hardly be stronger, the Court has rarely been so weak. In recent months, its authority appears to have been entirely eroded, and its decimation has paved the way for a new constitutional order to emerge.
The second change going on in India pertains to extra-constitutional violence. All societies face law and order challenges, and they all must confront the use of force by non-state actors. But the situation in India is of an altogether different nature. Here, one is faced with a case where some of the police force seem to share an inextricable relationship with the perpetration of force. The police are either directly responsible for the violence, as suggested by reports that have emerged out of Uttar Pradesh, where the very machinery of law and order appears to have been communalized, or responsible for providing cover for the violence, which appears to be the case in Jawaharlal Nehru University, where the masked men were allowed to run amok and then to run away. In either instance, there is now the creation and perpetuation of an extra-constitutional order.
As India is thrown deeper and deeper into a cycle of extra-constitutional violence, we should fear that the state and citizens will struggle to manage the situation. In such scenarios, the disorder and horror often follows a logic of its own. If India continues to unravel in this fashion, there will be unspeakable acts on either side, untold truths that are hidden in every quarter. Even the most terrifying moves will be justified, even the clearest forms of evidence will be challenged. In a world where public institutions and social harmony have given way, we will live under a state that claims monopoly over the exercise of force but no longer quite enjoys it. The state will deploy and exploit its power in every possible way, but, as in the case of colonial rule, the idea of legitimate authority will cease to have meaning.
If the story sounds familiar, it’s because it is. India wouldn’t be the first country to self-destruct, and its time may well have come. To stem the tide, to prevent a swift decline into communalism and authoritarianism, the outrage seen on the streets will need to translate into a robust and organized political opposition. In one of the images that spread across social media during the early days of the citizenship-related protests, students held images of Mohandas Gandhi and B. R. Ambedkar, among two of the most significant figures that laid the foundations for modern India. The image was telling in two respects. On the one hand, it gave the protests an anti-colonial feel, capturing the anger and fear that results from unbridled and unhinged state power. On the other hand, it revealed the need to recover past leaders, for no present ones exist. Many Indians are in search of a more contemporary reference point. Will they find it?
A British lawmaker has criticized the U.K.’s tabloid press, saying journalists threatened to reveal her same-sex relationship without her consent.
Layla Moran, a lawmaker from the Liberal Democrat party representing the constituency of Oxford West and Abingdon, announced she is pansexual and in a relationship with a woman in a tweet posted on Jan. 2. (Moran’s partner, Rosy Cobb, is a former head of media for the Liberal Democrats. She left her position after a scandal in which she allegedly forged an email.)
Moran is believed to be the first openly pansexual lawmaker in the United Kingdom.
“Pansexuality, to me, means it doesn’t matter about the physical attributions of the person you fall in love with, it’s about the person themselves,” Moran told PinkNews, a British LGBT publication. (“Being pansexual means being attracted to all gender identities,” as per a GLAAD definition, “or attracted to people regardless of gender.”)
But she criticized a British tabloid newspaper for its role in events leading up to the announcement, and for essentially forcing her to come out.
“Although I am happy to have talked openly about my sexuality and had already told many friends and family, the timing of speaking publicly wasn’t on my own terms,” she wrote in an op-ed for the Indy 100 news website on Monday.
Moran said that journalists from The Mail on Sunday had been calling people close to her for months and “attempting to make [my] relationship salacious or sensational.”
The newspaper had agreed to hold its story revealing her same-sex relationship after Moran pleaded with them to let her tell her 92 year-old grandmother first, she alleged. “I pleaded with them to wait,” Moran wrote. “I couldn’t bear the idea she would see it before anything else.”
But Moran said she “believed they would publish” the story regardless, so she decided to tell the world, along with her grandmother, on her own terms. “[I] decided to take back the control that I feared would be stolen from me,” she wrote.
Moran also criticized the Mail on Sunday for a follow-up story published Sunday by the newspaper’s political editor, which prominently quoted anonymous users of an online forum criticizing her for “weaponizing” her sexuality to “look woke.”
“The story frames my actions, my telling of my story, as a calculated plan,” Moran wrote. “This couldn’t be further from the truth. While I am proud of who I am, it was the media who I felt intimidated me… It’s possible that to some journalists and readers this is a jolly jape where they get one over me, but to me, this is my life.”
The newspaper said its journalists’ questions to Moran were for a story about whether her relationship with Cobb was a conflict of interest.
“The Mail on Sunday approached Ms Moran last weekend with questions about whether her relationship with Ms Cobb represented a conflict of interest,” the paper stated in its Sunday article. “We agreed not to run a story after Ms Moran invoked her right to keep her sexuality private: she then announced it herself five days later.”
The Mail on Sunday did not immediately respond to TIME’s request for comment.
(LONDON) — A man described as “the most prolific rapist in British legal history” has been sentenced to life in prison with a possible release after 30 years following his conviction for sexual offenses against 48 men.
Authorities said the evidence against 36-year-old Reynhard Sinaga indicates he had many more victims, with roughly 195 men apparently having been filmed while being abused when they were in his apartment. Many were unconscious at the time.
Judge Suzanne Goddard said in Manchester Crown Court the true number of Sinaga’s victims may never be known.
“You are an evil serial sexual predator who has preyed upon young men who came into the city center wanting nothing more than a good night out with their friends,” she said. “One of your victims described you as a monster. The scale and enormity of your offending confirms this as an accurate description.”
She said the courts had rarely if ever seen such a prolonged “campaign of rape.” Reporting restrictions that had prevented the publication of Sinaga’s name were lifted Monday.
Prosecutors say Sinaga had a non-threatening manner. He befriended young men, including many who were intoxicated after a night out, and offered them a place to stay at his apartment. He filmed many of the forced sexual encounters.
Prosecutor Ian Rushton said many victims initially thanked Sinaga for offering them accommodation. “But once back at his flat, he used victims as objects purely for his own gratification,” Rushton said.
Sinaga arrived in Britain from his native Indonesia on a student visa in 2007. He received two degrees in sociology and planning from the University of Manchester and was studying for his PhD at the University of Leeds when he was suspended following his arrest in 2017.
His thesis was called: “Sexuality and everyday transnationalism: South Asian gay and bisexual men in Manchester.”
His Manchester church offered a statement in support of his character that did not seem to sway the judge. “It is almost beyond belief that someone who could profess some Christian faith could at the same time have been committing such wicked and evil crimes,” she said.
(TEHRAN, Iran) — Weeping amid wails from a sea of mourners, Iran’s supreme leader on Monday prayed over the remains of a top Iranian general killed in a U.S. airstrike in Baghdad, an attack that’s drastically raised tensions between Tehran and Washington.
The targeted killing of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qasem Soleimani drew a crowd, said by police to be in the millions, on Monday in Tehran, where Soleimani’s replacement vowed to take revenge. Additionally, Tehran has abandoned the remaining limits of its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers in response to the slaying while in Iraq, the parliament has called for the expulsion of all American troops from Iraqi soil.
The developments could bring Iran closer to building an atomic bomb, set off a proxy or military attack launched by Tehran against America and enable the Islamic State group to stage a comeback in Iraq, making the Middle East a far more dangerous and unstable place.
Adding to the tensions, President Donald Trump threatened to demand billions of dollars in compensation from Iraq or impose “sanctions like they’ve never seen before” if it goes through with expelling U.S. troops.
Soleimani’s daughter, Zeinab, directly threatened an attack on the U.S. military in the Mideast while speaking to a crowd that stretched as far as the eye could see down major thoroughfares in Iran’s capital.
“The families of the American soldiers in western Asia … will spend their days waiting for the death of their children,” she said to cheers. Iranian state television and others online shared a video that showed Trump’s American flag tweet following Soleimani’s killing turn into a coffin, the “likes” of the tweet replaced by over 143,000 “killed” with the hashtag #severerevenge.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei himself prayed over the caskets of Soleimani and others slain in the attack. Khamenei, who had a close relationship with Soleimani, wept at one point during the traditional Muslim prayers for the dead. The crowd wailed.
Soleimani’s successor, Esmail Ghaani stood near Khamenei’s side, as did Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and other top leaders in the Islamic Republic. While Iran recently faced nationwide protests over government-set gasoline prices that reportedly killed over 300 people, Soleimani’s mass processionals has seen politicians and leaders across the Islamic Republic’s political spectrum take part, temporarily silencing that anger.
Demonstrators burned Israeli and U.S. flags, carried a flag-draped U.S. coffin or effigies of Trump. Some described Trump himself as a legitimate target for Iran’s revenge.
Mohammad Milad Rashidi, a 26-year-old university graduate, predicted more tension ahead.
“Trump demolished the chance for any sort of possible agreement between Tehran and Washington,” Rashidi said. “There will be more conflict in the future for sure.”
Ghaani made his own threat in an interview with Iranian state television aired Monday. “God the Almighty has promised to get his revenge, and God is the main avenger. Certainly actions will be taken,” he said.
Markets reacted Monday to the tensions, sending international benchmark Brent crude above $70 a barrel. The Middle East remains a crucial source of oil and Iran in the past has threatened the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which 20% of all the world’s oil traded passes.
Ghaani, a longtime Soleimani deputy, has now taken over as the head of the Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force, an expeditionary arm of the paramilitary organization answerable only to Khamenei. Ghaani has been sanctioned by the U.S. since 2012 for his work funding its operations around the world, including its work with proxies in Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen.
Those proxies likely will be involved in any operation targeting U.S. interests in the Mideast or elsewhere in the world.
Already, the U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia warned Americans “of the heightened risk of missile and drone attacks.” In Lebanon, the leader of the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah said Soleimani’s killing made U.S. military bases, warships and service members across the region fair game for attacks. A former Iranian Revolutionary Guard leader suggested the Israeli city of Haifa and others could be targeted should the U.S. attack Iran.
“We promise to continue down martyr Soleimani’s path as firmly as before with help of God, and in return for his martyrdom we aim to get rid of America from the region,” Ghaani said.
The head of the Guard’s aerospace program, Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, suggested Iran’s response wouldn’t stop with a single attack.
“Firing a couple of missiles, hitting a base or even killing Trump is not valuable enough to compensate for martyr Soleimani’s blood,” Hajizadeh said on state TV. “The only thing that can compensate for his blood is the complete removal of America from the region and taking away their evil from the oppressed people of the region.”
On the nuclear deal, Iranian state television cited Sunday a statement by Rouhani’s administration saying the country would not observe the nuclear deal’s restrictions on fuel enrichment, on the size of its enriched uranium stockpile and on its research and development activities.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson specifically urged Iran to “withdraw all measures” not in line with the 2015 agreement that was intended to stop Tehran from pursuing its atomic weapons program.
Iran insisted that it remains open to negotiations with European partners over its nuclear program. And it did not back off from earlier promises that it wouldn’t seek a nuclear weapon.
However, the announcement represents the clearest nuclear proliferation threat yet made by Iran since Trump unilaterally withdrew from the accord in 2018 and reimposed sanctions last year. It further raises regional tensions, as Iran’s longtime foe Israel has promised never to allow Iran to produce an atomic bomb.
Iran did not elaborate on what levels it would immediately reach in its program. Tehran has already broken some of the deal’s limits as part of a step-by-step pressure campaign to get sanctions relief. It already has increased its production, begun enriching uranium to 5% and restarted enrichment at an underground facility.
While it does not possess uranium enriched to weapons-grade levels of 90%, any push forward narrows the estimated one-year “breakout time” needed for it to have enough material to build a nuclear weapon if it chose to do so.
The International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations watchdog observing Iran’s program, did not respond to a request for comment. However, Iran said that its cooperation with the IAEA “will continue as before.”
Soleimani’s killing has escalated the crisis between Tehran and Washington after months of back-and-forth attacks and threats that have put the wider Middle East on edge. Iran has promised “harsh revenge” while Trump has vowed on Twitter that the U.S. will strike back at 52 targets “VERY FAST AND VERY HARD. ”
He doubled down on that threat Sunday, dismissing warnings that targeting cultural sites could be a war crime under international law.
“They’re allowed to kill our people. They’re allowed to torture and maim our people. They’re allowed to use roadside bombs and blow up our people. And we’re not allowed to touch their cultural sites? It doesn’t work that way,” Trump told reporters.
The processions for Soleimani mark the first time Iran honored a single man with a multi-city ceremony. Not even Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who founded the Islamic Republic, received such a processional with his death in 1989.
Soleimani will be buried in his hometown of Kerman.

Gambrell reported from Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
As the only place in the Chinese-speaking world where people can choose their top political leader, it’s unsurprising that elections in Taiwan embody democracy at its unbridled messiest: febrile, rambunctious and dripping in color. This year is no different. The island of 23 million heads to the ballot box on Saturday following a campaign dominated by fake news from malevolent actors, sexist personal attacks and fist-pumping speeches.
The growing clout of Beijing looms large over the island. China’s strongman President Xi Jinping has been blunt about the need to politically reunite self-governing Taiwan with the mainland. The past four years has seen seven diplomatic allies switch to Beijing—only 15 nations still recognize the government in Taipei—and repeated threats of invasion.
How best to safeguard the island’s democratic way of life has dominated the election, which pits the anti-China incumbent President Tsai Ing-wen against the more pro-Beijing challenger Han Kuo-yu.
Deteriorating cross-Strait relations are worrisome for the U.S., which maintains Taiwan as an unofficial ally.
Here’s what you need to know about the 2020 Taiwan presidential election.
What’s at stake?
Taiwan has ruled itself since effectively splitting from the mainland following the Nationalists’ flight across the Taiwan Strait in 1949 following China’s civil war. Relations between Taipei and Beijing had improved thanks to the “One China” principle, which states that the island and mainland belong to the same country, even if the governments of Beijing and Taipei bicker over which is the legitimate power. Today, Taiwan’s unfortunate distinction is that it has every characteristic of a state—people, territory, economy, military, government—except recognition by the U.N. and most governments. (The U.S. switched recognition from Taipei to Beijing under Jimmy Carter in 1979, though maintains a host of unofficial ties with Taiwan.)
Although the island’s population is over 95% ethnic Han Chinese, over the previous half-century they have been politically divided between those who migrated alongside Nationalist Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek 70 years ago and those who were already on the island, and identify as Taiwanese above all. Historically, the former have supported the Nationalists, or Kuomintang (KMT), while the latter back the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
Taiwan democratized in the early 1990s and enjoyed an export-driven boom. The island’s economy ranks 21st in the world with a GDP per capita about three times that of the mainland. It has switched from low-end manufacturing to advanced design and production for semi-conductors, AI and biotech. Still, like fellow “tiger economies” Japan and South Korea, in recent years Taiwan has fallen victim to the middle-income trap with sluggish growth and stagnant wages.
But it is relations with China that have dominated the election campaign. Last January, Xi suggested Taiwan would enjoy the same system of semi-autonomy, known as “one country, two systems,” under which Hong Kong has been ruled since its 1997 takeover by Beijing. However, ferocious and increasingly violent pro-democracy protests in the freewheeling former British colony have galvanized opposition to any such arrangement.
Recent surveys show some 80% of Taiwan’s people reject political union with China. Most back the island’s current status of de facto independence, given Beijing has vowed formal secession would draw a military response. There’s also a fear that conflict with Taiwan might become an easy distraction for Beijing if its slowing economy sparks popular unrest. “That’s probably the biggest threat to Taiwan right now,” says Shelley Rigger, an East Asia expert at Davidson College in North Carolina and author of Why Taiwan Matters.
The ballot is taking place just over a week after a helicopter crash killed eight military officials including Gen. Shen Yi-ming, who had taken over as chief of the general staff in July and was Taiwan’s top military officer.
Who are the main candidates?
The campaign is widely seen as a two-way race between incumbent President Tsai for the DPP and Kaoshiung Mayor Han for the KMT. A third candidate, People First Party candidate James Soong, brings up the rear.
Tsai Ing-wen
Elected president in a landslide in 2016, Tsai, 63, is a U.S. and U.K.-trained lawyer and academic with a reputation as “bookish and aloof,” says Rigger. Although Tsai is of southern Taiwanese stock, she was born in Taipei and grew up among the capital’s KMT-dominated educated elite. One grandmother belongs to Taiwan’s Paiwan aboriginal group, famed for their intricate wood and slate carvings.
Tsai first entering government in 1994 with roles in the Fair Trade Commission, National Security Council and Mainland Affairs Council. Tsai’s popularity plummeted over her first term as president due to a series of scandals. Her decision to overhaul Taiwan’s lavish state pension system resulted in chastening local election results in 2018. At one point she had a 30-point deficit to her KMT rival. However, her poll numbers have since recovered, helped not least by the turmoil engulfing Hong Kong.
“After the local election she realized she needed more face-to-face communication with the people,” Jason Liu, Deputy Secretary-General of Presidential Office, tells TIME in his Taipei office. “Since then she has cut time in internal meetings and increased that she spends outside meeting the people.”
Tsai’s refusal to endorse the idea that Taiwan and China must and always will be the one nation makes her anathema to Beijing. Taipei has also accused Beijing of orchestrating a campaign of misinformation against her. In recent months, Tsai has been falsely accused of everything from installing artwork bearing an enormous quote from Mao Zedong in her Presidential Office to faking her doctoral dissertation. (The Chinese government denies any such campaign.)
She has also been the subject the of a series of spiteful, misogynistic attacks from opponents who claim that an unwed, childless woman isn’t qualified to lead the next generation.
Nevertheless, she’s clear favorite for reelection.
Han Kuo-yu
The populist Han, 62, has been described as Taiwan’s Donald Trump for good reason. When he’s not leading diehard supporters—known as the “Han Wave”—in nostalgic and patriotic songs on the stump, he’s making outlandish promises, such as drilling for oil in the contested South China Sea and bringing casinos and Formula One motor races to Taiwan.
An undeniably colorful character, Han has been accusing of having links to a gangster and once punched fellow lawmaker and future DPP President Chen Shui-bian within the parliament building, hospitalizing him for three days. However, unlike Trump, Han doesn’t vilify particular social or ethnic groups and has no problem making fun of himself, especially his bald head.
Few thought Han would be win the KMT nomination, especially given his opponent was the popular and fabulously well-resourced billionaire Foxconn CEO Terry Gou. But Han is used to pulling off the miraculous. His stock within the party had fallen so far that many saw his assignment to run as mayor in the DPP stronghold of Kaohsiung in 2018 as a punishment—so slender seemed the possibility of victory. Han shocked everyone by orchestrating a stunning victory, wresting Taiwan’s third-largest city from 20 years of DPP control, helped by the backlash against Tsai’s pension reforms. In the end, he bested Gou, too.
Han says building ties with Beijing can ultimately better safeguard Taiwan’s de facto sovereignty, describing the two sides as “one family” during speeches. But he has also rejected “one country, two systems” as a formula for reuniting the estranged territories.
Still, Han’s Beijing-friendly stance has put off many fearful of soft colonization via Taiwan’s growing economic reliance on the mainland. China is Taiwan’s top trading partner, with trade totaling $226 billion in 2018; Taiwan companies have over $100 billion invested in China, reports Reuters.
What does this mean for the U.S.?
Although Washington switched recognition from Taipei to Beijing to in 1979, that same year Congress passed the Taiwan Relations Act, which obliges the U.S. government to sell the island weaponry necessary for its own defense among other security guarantees.
Still, Trump’s transactional record on foreign policy has caused palpable anxiety over whether the U.S. would flip on Taiwan. The recent U.S. withdrawal from the Syrian border with Turkey spotlights how quickly the mercurial U.S. President can turn on allies, this time the Kurds. And Trump has long prided himself in doing what other leaders consider unthinkable—the sudden suspension of U.S.-South Korea military drills during denuclearization talks with Kim Jong Un, for one.
Yet there’s much evidence to suggest U.S. support for Taiwan remains robust as the U.S. relationship with China becomes more acrimonious generally. Last year, Trump signed the bipartisan Taiwan Travel Act, which boosts the exchange of high-level officials, prompting the Chinese embassy in Washington to complain the law’s clauses “severely violate the One China principle.”
Taiwan also just purchased $2.2 billion of American weaponry, including Abrams tanks, much to Beijing’s ire. In late October, a bill to protect Taiwan from Chinese diplomatic pressure won approval in the U.S. Senate.
That same month, Ted Cruz became the first U.S. Senator in 35 years to attend Taiwan’s National Day celebration. When it comes to support for Taiwan, Cruz tells TIME, “the United States will not be bullied and will not back down.”

China now has the largest surveillance system in the world. The government owns and operates 170 million CCTV cameras. They use artificial intelligence and facial recognition to keep track of all the cameras and all the feeds. As camera and sensor technology shrinks, hiding cameras has become much easier. There once was a time when this would have bothered us immensely. Do you remember Google Glass? Now people have the same and better cameras in their phones and in their watches. Nobody cares. Where is the line? Who can record who when? If you’re an employer, the line gets fuzzy.

MUMBAI: Lenders to bankrupt Reliance Communications (RCom) are unlikely to agree to the current bids and will push for a better deal with more upfront cash, said people familiar with the matter. The committee of creditors (CoC) is weighing whether to pick up equity in RCom and its two arms or sell the parent and its units separately to extract maximum value, these people said.Reliance Jio Infocomm, Bharti Airtel, UV Asset Reconstruction Co and private equity firm Varde Partners have bid for either part or all the assets of RCom and its two units — Reliance Telecom Infrastructure, which had licences to provide services in eight regions, and its tower arm Reliance Infratel. But the bids have offered very little upfront cash or are unworkable in the current form, said bankers. They said UV Asset Reconstruction Co has offered to pay Rs 12,760 crore, staggered over 12 years, with only Rs 5 crore upfront cash for creditors. 73131148 Varde Partners, meanwhile, has offered to create a special purpose vehicle for each asset with management fee.Bharti Airtel's take-it-or-leave-it offer comes with many riders, and has not enthused the lenders either."The bidders think banks are desperate to sell, so they will pay us trash rates. But we know the value of the assets. Our estimates suggest the land and other infrastructure alone could be worth Rs 15,000 crore. We will not agree to the offers currently on the table," said one of the persons.Jio has bid Rs 3,600 crore, but wants only the towers. Bankers are hoping this bid could be combined with UV Asset Reconstruction Co's offer, but at a higher amount."There are various ways we could do it (asset sale), but all efforts are to get a better deal. We can consider selling the three companies separately, or UV Asset Reconstruction Co may be asked to increase the upfront cash payment. We have already agreed on a scoring model for the deal that the bidders know about. We could find the best bidder, and then run a Swiss challenge," said a second person familiar with the discussions.Discussions are on with Deloitte, the resolution professional for RCom and its two units. The CoC has been meeting every few days to take stock.Emails sent to Deloitte and RCom remained unanswered as of press time Monday."Negotiations are on and the CoC is open to picking an equity stake in the company, especially for bids that do not involve a high upfront payment.Making high upfront payment may be tough when there are legal tussles, which is why equity is important, in case the assets are sold later at a higher value," said a person aware of the developments.A senior executive working with one of the bidders said that besides monetary aspects, the CoC also had queries related to various compliance issues. The CoC expects to raise at least Rs 14,000 crore from the sale of the telco's assets, including spectrum, fibre and towers, based on the bids received. At that level, the haircut would be about 70% for financial lenders that have filed claims of Rs 49,000 crore against RCom and its units Reliance Telecom and Reliance Infratel.THE ASSETSAssets put up for sale include airwaves in the 850 MHz band in 14 of India's 22 telecom circles, about 43,000 telecom towers, some fibre and data centres. The spectrum is the most valuable asset. The bankruptcy court had, in a separate insolvency proceeding for Aircel, ruled that the CoC can sell airwaves, rejecting a telecom department plea. The government wanted the spectrum to be returned to it due to unpaid dues, saying it was the owner of the airwaves. The department of telecom is expected to challenge the National Company Law Tribunal order soon.At the time of its bankruptcy filing, RCom had debt of Rs 46,000 crore, making it one of India's biggest insolvencies. As many as 53 financial creditors, including local and foreign banks, nonbanking financial companies and funds, have claimed Rs 57,382 crore, of which Rs 49,224 crore has been accepted by the resolution professional.Top Indian financial lenders include State Bank of India (with a verified exposure of over Rs 4,800 crore), followed by Bank of Baroda (Rs 2,500 crore), Syndicate Bank (Rs 1,225 crore) and Punjab National Bank (Rs 1,127 crore). Top overseas lenders include China Development Bank (Rs 9,900 crore), Exim Bank of China (over Rs 3,356 crore) and Standard Chartered Bank (Mumbai and London, Rs 2,100 crore).
NEW DELHI: NTPC has outbid the Adani Group for the Avantha Group's 600 MW Jhabua power plant in Madhya Pradesh, with a Rs 1,900-crore offer that was two and-a-half times more than the rival bid, people in the know said.State-run NTPC's offer is also the highest on a per-megawatt basis so far to buy out a stressed asset in the power sector. The thermal power producer undergoing bankruptcy proceedings owes more than Rs 5,000 crore to lenders, who could recover 38% of their loans if they accept the NTPC offer.Experts said this could encourage banks to approach the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) for debt resolution, as the valuation was better than other recent deals happened for stressed power assets outside the bankruptcy court. Currently, banks go to the NCLT as a last resort, after exhausting all resolution options due to fear of large haircuts. 73131035 The people said Jhabua received a good bid as it was an operational project built with equipment from Bharat Heavy Electricals, but stressed due to lack of working capital.NTPC's bid values the unit at Rs 3.2 crore per MW against the construction cost of Rs 6 crore for new projects.Adani Power had valued it at about Rs 750 crore, or Rs 1.25 crore per MW, the people said.NTPC and Adani Power did not respond to emails seeking comment until press time Monday.Shares of NTPC closed 0.34% down at Rs 118.90 on Monday on the BSE, while those of Adani Power ended 4.9% down at Rs 60.15.This is the first time that the staterun power producer has bid for any stressed project. It had earlier decided against buying any stressed projects outside the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC).Its offer was better than the deals for power plants done outside the IBC, including Adani Power's buyout of the GMR Chhattisgarh plant and Resurgent Power's acquisition of Jaiprakash Associates' Prayagraj Power Generation unit.Adani Power had won GMR Infrastructure's 1,370 MW coal-based power plant in Chhattisgarh, by offering to take over its debt at Rs 3,530 crore, or Rs 2.58 crore per MW. It paid a nominal Rs 1 for the equity component.Tata Power-backed Resurgent Power paid about Rs 6,000 crore, or a little over Rs 3 crore per MW, for the 1,980 MW PPGCL power plant in Uttar Pradesh. Hong Kong-based Agritrade Resources bought SKS Power's 1,200 MW Binjkote power plant for Rs 2,170 crore, valuing it at Rs 1.8 crore per MW.The Jhabua plant faced land acquisition and funding issues leading to time and cost overruns.Banks and financial institutions are trying to close resolution proceedings for at least five stressed power plants including Essar Power Mahan, RKM Power-Gen and Suzlon Energy, even as the January first week deadline as per the central bank's Prudential Framework for resolution of stressed assets has passed. The lenders aim to close the deals for these projects outside the IBC by March this year.
NEW DELHI: Local rates of petrol and diesel, already at a 13-month high, are poised to rise further as crude oil advanced another 2% to inch closer to $71a barrel on Monday. Oil futures climbed to $70.74 as traders weighed every aggressive comment from both US and Iran that kept pushing up probabilities of a wider conflict in the world's largest oil producing and exporting region, and bolstering fears of a supply disruption. What added to the market's worry was US President Donald Trump's threat to impose heavy sanctions against Iraq if American troops were forced to leave OPEC's second-biggest producer. 73131584 Trump's warnings to strike "in a disproportionate manner," and attack 52 sites if Iran were to retaliate against the killing of its general, and Iran's threat to "settle scores with the US" kept the market unsettled through the day.Local prices of petrol and diesel advanced on Monday, in line with international fuel rates, and can soon become a headache for the government already facing the challenge of reviving an economy in the middle of a slowdown. On Monday, petrol retailed for Rs 75.69 a litre in Delhi and Rs 81.28 a litre in Mumbai. Diesel was at Rs 68.68 in Delhi and Rs 72.02 in Mumbai. Since Friday, petrol and diesel prices are up 34 paise and 43 paise a litre, respectively.Fuel prices had already been rising in response to the decision by key oil producers, including OPEC members and Russia, to extend output cut until March — in two months, petrol and diesel rates have risen by Rs 3.09 and Rs 2.93 a litre, respectively, in Delhi.State oil companies use 15-days' moving average of global fuel rates for local pricing. The current surge in international rates will show up over the fortnight, a state oil company executive said.
NEW DELHI: The government is likely to cut spending for the current fiscal year by as much as Rs 2 lakh crore ($27.82 billion) as it faces one of the biggest tax shortfalls in recent years, three government sources said.Asia's third largest economy, which is growing at its slowest pace in over six years because of lack of private investment, could be hurt further if the government cuts spending. But with a revenue shortfall of about Rs 2.5 lakh crore, the government has little choice to keep its deficit within "acceptable limits", the first official, who did not want to be named, told Reuters. The government has spent about 65% of the total expenditure target of Rs 27.86 lakh crore till November but reduced the pace of spending in October and November, according to government data. A 2 lakh crore-rupee reduction would be about a 7% cut in total spending planned for the year.In October and November, government spending increased by Rs 1.6 lakh crore, nearly half the Rs 3.1 lakh crore it spent in September. The fiscal year starts April 1 and ends March 31.Lack of demand and weak corporate earnings growth in the economy led to lagging tax collections this year. Analysts said growth will be hurt."When the private investment has slowed so much, this will definitely drag down growth further," said Rupa Rege Nitusure, chief economist at L&T Financial.India's economic growth slowed for six consecutive quarters to 4.5% in July-September, despite a 135-basis-point cut in interest rates by the central bank since February 2019.Now, even the Reserve Bank of India seems to have become more worried about inflation rising. It kept its key lending rate on hold on December 5, even though it slashed its growth forecast for the current fiscal to 5%, which would be the lowest in a decade.Even a surprise corporate tax rate cut announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman earlier this year failed to spur private investment in the economy. The government is likely to keep the fiscal deficit under 3.8% of gross domestic product, sources said, while letting it slip from its earlier set target of 3.3% for the year. The government is likely to announce additional borrowing of Rs 3,000 crore to Rs 5,000 crore for the current year to match the revised fiscal deficit, two sources in the government said.
Mumbai: A consortium of Manipal Hospitals and TPG Capital Management has emerged as the front runner to acquire Seattlebased healthcare chain Columbia Asia's Indian hospital assets in a Rs 2,000 crore deal, said people with knowledge of the matter.Manipal-TPG — among the final shortlisted bidders — has entered into exclusive talks with Columbia Asia management and the transaction is expected to be concluded by the fiscal year-end."Negotiations are advancing faster and we hope to conclude it by March," said one of the people cited above. Morgan Stanley is running a formal sales process to find a buyer, the people said.ET first reported the potential transaction on October 11.Others in the race included BR Shetty-owned BRS Ventures Investment Ltd, General Atlanticbacked KIMS Hospital Hyderabad, private equity funds Blackstone and Bain Capital. Manipal and TPG declined to comment. The stake sale is part of Columbia Asia management's decision to exit Asia operations. 73131385 Interestingly, TPG was part of the consortium — along with Malaysian conglomerate Hong Leong— that bought rest of the Asia operations of the Seattle-based chain. It paid $1.2 billion for 17 hospitals in Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam.Columbia Asia has 11 facilities in the country with a total bed strength of around 1,200 with another 200 beds under construction. It has six hospitals in Karnataka and one each in Maharashtra, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Delhi. The deal will make Manipal one of the top healthcare chains in the country. It now owns 10 multi-speciality hospitals, five teaching hospitals and several fertility clinics. It's present in Bengaluru, Mangalore, Vijayawada and Goa with a bed strength of around 6,000, its website showed. After losing out in the race for Fortis Hospitals, Manipal had been engaged in discussions for multiple buyouts in the sector.Backed by private equity groups Temasek and TPG, Manipal Hospitals was in final discussions to acquire about 82% stake in Medanta-The Medicity, owned by renowned heart surgeon Naresh Trehan, at a valuation of ?5,800 crore ($820 million). However, the deal fell through late last year.Manipal was also engaged in negotiations to acquire other assets such as Hyderabad-based hospital chain Star Hospitals and Kolkatabased AMRI Hospitals Ltd.Texas-based TPG is one of the most aggressive investors in the Indian healthcare space. In 2017, it created Asian Healthcare Holdings (AHH), a platform to invest in healthcare assets. Separately, it invested $146 million in Manipal in 2015. TPG Capital, the buyout arm of private equity firm TPG Group, holds a 25% stake in Manipal Health Enterprises while the Singapore government's investment arm Temasek Holdings Pte Ltd holds 18%.
It is tough to predict how the geopolitical situation will pan out, but higher crude oil prices could be negative for India, said S Naren, executive director, ICICI Prudential Asset Management. In a press meet on Monday, Naren said investors can make lump sum investments in smallcaps, which are undervalued after the recent sell-off. Edited excerpts:How will the geopolitical tensions between Iran and US impact India? It is tough to predict how the geopolitical situation will pan out. However, crude oil going up is negative for India. If the situation deteriorates further from here, it will impact equity markets, the rupee and also the fixed income markets. In 2019, only the top 10-15 stocks rose, while midcaps and smallcaps remained weak. Will this continue? For the top 10 stocks, the market cap has risen 43% from February 2018 to December 2019 while for stocks ranked 251 and below, the market capitalisation has fallen by 52%. Incidentally, in 2007, investors believed that roads were a requirement and cars were not essential. That era is known as the infrastructure boom days. Currently, investors believe that cars are a requirement but roads are not, which again may prove to be a folly in the days ahead. As an investor, it is important to remember that the current rally is very narrow in nature. The Indian economy and the resultant market is more than the top 10 companies which currently seem to be shouldering the up-move. Historically, it has been seen that with time such concentrated rally moves become broad-based in a gradual manner. So, it is essential for investors to look beyond the overpriced quality names and over a period, shift to value-oriented names. What has changed in the smallcap space? In mid- December, our market cap model has suggested that the share of smallcaps in the overall market cap has fallen to 8%, which is similar to 2013 levels. This is after having risen to as high as 18% in 2017. Smallcaps are currently offering a better margin of safety in terms of risk spread over large caps. Our models are decisively turning more positive on smallcaps. It is suggesting lump sum as well as staggered investments in smallcap funds with a 3-4 year view. In the last two years, smallcaps have corrected by 40% and have underperformed significantly compared to largecaps. I look at economic cycles. Today, credit growth is at the bottom. When credit growth is at a bottom that is the time to take risk. You take risk in an undervalued asset class. An undervalued asset class is the smallcap segment. So, you are investing in an undervalued asset class at the bottom of the economic cycle. Over 3-5 years, we feel that smallcaps would outperform large caps. What are you telling your investors?Earnings growth has not come in a big way in the last five years. Quality and mega-caps are two asset classes that have peaked. Further, given that the recovery in domestic macros is likely to be protracted it is very likely that the markets may tend to be volatile in the interim. Add to this mix, global factors such as the rise in crude oil prices, geopolitical tensions, all of which tend to be unpredictable and are factors which can further cause markets to remain volatile. Given this setting, for a retail investor, it is imperative to be mindful of asset allocation. While in the short run the benefits of asset allocation may not be visible, it is only over the long term that one tends to appreciate the impact asset allocation has on portfolio gains.Valuations of several PSU stocks are low. Is there value in these set of stocks? While valuations of several PSU stocks are attractive, they have not recovered because there is a fear of disinvestment in the March quarter. If that does not happen, PSUs could turn attractive.
Geopolitical tension directly hits India's fisc. The oil prices have already shot up and if the tension persists, it may go up even further which does not at all augur well for Indian markets, economy and the fisc, says Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Group Chairman, Inditrade Capital. Excerpts from an interview with ETNOW. Today thanks to geopolitical concerns, we are looking at a sub-12,000 print on the index with an 800-point slump on the Sensex. How worried are you? Does this open the door for further cuts for the markets given that it is not going to be the most promising of quarterly earnings for us?The Indian markets have moved up quite a bit and there was definitely some correction in the offing. This geopolitical tension provided that kind of window and we have seen sharp corrections today. Also remember that the geopolitical tension directly hits India's fisc. The oil prices have already shot up and if the tension persists, it may go up even further which does not at all augur well for Indian markets, economy and the fisc. So, obviously there is going to be incremental pressure. The risk-off mood of the global investor is getting depicted across the globe and we will have to wait for the US market to open. But the fact remains that Indian markets have shown the initial crack and further cracks may be expected depending on the global mood, unless the escalation gets contained very soon. The bigger casualty today was the banks, especially the PSBs. Now the concern with the creme a la crème was also that reflation is something that the market is not really pricing in. The stocks have given you fabulous returns in the year gone by and continue to trade at high PE multiples. Some are going to fall under their own weight. We have already seen that play out in HDFC Bank and Bajaj Finance. Is it wise to profit take from some of these names? If somebody has a very short-term timeframe, then it definitely will be wiser to selectively book profit. Of course, you have to keep watching the market and when there is an opportunity, you can book profits. I do not see the stocks moving very quickly to higher levels in a hurry, So, you can book profits but in the overall banking and financial services space we continue to remain positive. Remember what is happening today and what is going to happen for the next few days is on back of geopolitical unusual event. We cannot predict these kind of events. What we can predict is the banking and financial services sector is coming out of a major correction and we have seen part of that correction play out in the last calendar year. Another part of the correction will definitely get played out in 2020. Would HDFC Bank and Kotak Banks of the world keep moving up? My answer is no. They will not give you that kind of growth what they had given in 2018 and 2019. What will move up and what will give you growth in 2020 will probably be the corporate facing banks like ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and SBI even from current levels, leave aside the geopolitical tension related correction. They will over 6 to 12 months, give the investor handsome returns. So, should you go and buy today, tomorrow or day after? I would say wait and watch. They should not jump into the market right now. Let us see where things settle. Even if you are able to buy at the bottom, it does not matter, probably buy when the market starts moving up.
BENGALURU: With just over a month for the Delhi Assembly elections and contentious laws and policies polarising the electorate, political advertising and content spends on social media are expected to rise this year despite several restrictions placed on them by social media platforms, experts said. While micro-blogging platform Twitter banned political advertising in October, Google curbed ways in which political parties can micro target their campaigns in November. Chinese ByteDance-owned short-video platform TikTok does not allow political advertising at all.Still, this is unlikely to dampen spending on social media advertising in the country, the experts said. "Political advertising spends won't go down in 2020. They have tasted blood. There will just be a qualitative tweaking of expenses," said brand consultant Harish Bijoor. "They will always find a loophole to thwart any restrictions placed by platforms on political ads. Earlier, political ads focused on short periods of time, on a campaign. Two months became six, and now it is year-round," he said.According to Facebook's political advertising transparency report, political parties spent Rs 74.88 lakh targetting Delhi in the last 90 days.Paltu Aadmi Party — a mock-page advertising against incumbent Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal was the top spender during the period, followed by Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP's) official account.Another page 'My Delhi, My Pride', advertising in support of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was the third-highest spender. Delhi elections will be held on February 8. "Political parties are finding organic ways of advertising by paying influencers or creating online communities. Spending will definitely not come down," said Naresh Arora, director of DesignBoxed, which managed Indian National Congress' campaign in the recent Haryana Assembly elections and earlier handled the party's social media campaign during the general elections. "Creating and distributing content is very expensive. Some political parties even pay people for posting tweets on their behalf," he added. Spending to create content for social media is not directly correlated with elections, though, and will be driven by government policies as political parties plan various outreach programmes on social media, Arora said. The advertising spends are usually higher than what is disclosed by social media platforms, experts said. Money spent on creating and distributing content through thousands of surrogates — on WhatsApp, Twitter and other platforms organically — usually leave no money trail, they pointed out. For example, political parties and affiliates officially spent about ?72 crore to advertise on Facebook, Google and Twitter in 2019, according to advertising transparency reports released by the US-based technology companies. However, the amount is believed to be at least 3-4 times more than the official figure.Political parties will increasingly use influencers to spread their message, since audiences on social media are persuaded by people-to-people communication, said Karthik Srinivasan, an independent communications consultant."Political parties are more likely to spend money on social media only for hot-button issues that they need wide reach for," he said.
Vijay Mallya can't use pendency of plea to stall cases abroad, says SC "Mallya has been hanging the carrot of settlement before the SBI-led bank consortium from whom loans were taken. Not a single rupee has come. SBI has filed insolvency proceedings against Mallya in London court. Hearing is concluded. Now, he has said a proposal is pending before the SC here… So, the UK court is waiting," the SG said.

Qualcomm might be best known for supporting mobile phones, but it also has a family of automotive products, including semiconductors for the telematics systems in cars. Snapdragon Ride is the latest — and perhaps most notable effort to date — to carve out more market share in the already crowded ADAS and automated driving industries. It also puts Qualcomm in competition, once again, with the likes of Nvidia and Intel’s Mobileye subsidiary.
The Snapdragon Ride platform is designed to support the top three industry segments in automated driving, Nakul Duggal, senior vice president of product management at Qualcomm told TechCrunch in a recent interview. It can handle the hardware requirements for the active safety advanced driver assistance systems found in today’s passenger vehicles, including lane keeping, traffic sign recognition and automatic emergency braking. But Duggal says it can also manage the more intensive hardware requirements in so-called Level 2+ systems such as automated highway driving and self-parking as well as Level 4, which is a designation given to autonomous urban driving applications like robotaxis.
The platform is built on modular multi-core CPUs, energy-efficient AI and computer vision engines and a GPU, the company said. It’s also thermally efficient and can offer 30 tera operations per second (TOPS) for the lower level active safety systems up to more than 700 TOPS at 130W for autonomous driving. This means, the platform can operate at these various levels without requiring additional liquid-cooled systems, which helps lower the cost and boost reliability, Duggal said, adding it can be particularly useful in electric vehicles.
Snapdragon Ride is expected to be available for pre-development to automakers and Tier-1 suppliers in the first half of 2020. Snapdragon Ride-enabled vehicles are expected to be in production in 2023.
“Despite a lot of publicity and social media, number of sign-ups were modest,” reads one of the last monthly reports I sent to my VCs before my startup ceased to exist. “After the initial wave, sign-ups have slowed right down to near pre-launch levels. User acquisition is our number-one priority and my biggest headache.”
Like, I suspect, many other early-stage founders, I hated the monthly chore of writing a short report for investors. We used the PPP format (progress, problems and plans) for these regular missives, but progress was almost always slow and most of the time, problems far outstripped plans.
On good months, I was far more motivated to file our monthly report — it is a very human thing to want to deliver good news — and on bad months I had a million other more important things I thought a CEO should be spending their time on.
However, according to a research conducted by Jan Luca Ernst, a masters student at The University of St. Gallen, I may have been misguided. In his thesis, supported by Prof. Dr. Elgar Fleisch (Professor of Technology Management at University of St. Gallen) and Florian Schweitzer (a partner at VC firm btov), he writes “startups that submit regular, high-quality reports are shown by the statistics to be better investments than other startups.”
The research was based on analysis of hundreds of monthly startup reports submitted to btov Partners by portfolio companies out of its first two funds, which ran between 2006 to 2014. Specifically, researchers looked at 64 startups, covering the performance of startups during the first two years after initial investment from the first fund, and the performance during a single year, 2015, for the second fund.
“Hypotheses on the positive effects of monthly startup reports were tested, using several multivariate regressions,” write the paper’s authors. “As a result, several initial assumptions were discarded.”
For example, the punctuality of startup reports did not appear to indicate whether a startup would be more successful. In contrast, the frequency of reporting (at a confidence level of 95%), as well as the quality of the reporting (at a confidence level of 99%), were identified as contributors to success.
“Overall, the findings emphasize the importance of the post-investment phase and the value added by venture capitalists beyond financial support,” say Ernst, Fleisch and Schweitzer. “One main implication of the findings has an impact on subsequent investment rounds. Startups that submit regular, high-quality reports are shown by the statistics to be better investments than other startups. This may be an indicator that justifies further investment, that, in turn, leads to better performance.”
The authors also suggest that, in the future, investors may ask for “full, unfiltered access” to all past reporting of a startup, including evidence on the quality of reports and regularity of submission. “This would increase transparency and therefore eventually lead to better investment decision making,” they write.
With that said, during a call with btov’s Florian Schweitzer, he conceded that correlation doesn’t necessarily mean cause, but argued that there are many softer, and sometimes hidden, positive outcomes from monthly reports — especially when a founder does them honestly and whole heartedly.
Extra Crunch: What should a monthly report contain?
Florian Schweitzer: We always define what we would like or what we think would be sensible, because for each startup, of course, it is different. In general, the idea is that the founders can do the report in half an hour. Usually, it contains something like eight KPIs, and then some bullet points reflecting on what went well, and what are the challenges right now. And those challenges are a superb opportunity to understand where the founder is struggling, and where we can support them. So it can be a very, very productive agenda for a discussion, which we usually have regularity.
I think it is very good that founders sit back and think for half an hour: what happened during the last 30 days? What did I want to achieve? What did I not achieve? And to be honest about the progress and challenges.
Intel is holding its CES press conference today at 4 PM Pacific, 7 PM Eastern. The company will talk about what to expect when it comes to CPU innovation. We could also get an early look at the company's first standalone GPUs.
We'll have a team on the ground, so you should also check out our full CES coverage.
The Guild, a nearly four-year-old, Austin, Texas-based startup that turns apartments into comfortable short-term accommodations for business and other travelers, has landed $25 million in Series B funding from some of its earlier investors, including Maveron and Convivialite, along with real estate companies like the Nicol Investment Company, which owns some of the buildings in which The Guild has units.
The 171-person company — started by two University of Texas grads who met in 2015 through their overlapping interests (one worked in boutique hotel development and the other is a co-founder of the apartment marketplace Apartment List) — has plenty of competition. Lyric, Domio and Sonder are but three of the many other well-funded companies now in the business of gussying up apartments and renting them out like hotel rooms.
The competition is so stiff, in fact, that all are fast adding other services to their offerings. All promise around-the-clock support, for example, so if the Wi-Fi goes down, there’s someone to scream at, no matter the hour. Lyric also offers its customers “curated in-suite art, music and coffee programs.” The Guild touts its personal approach, like adding a Christmas tree to a room for a family that is temporarily displaced during the holidays. Meanwhile, among its offerings, Sonder offers “pre-stay cleaning.”
The last seems less like a perk than a necessity, but in the race to capture mindshare, no detail is too small to promote, apparently.
As for its part, The Guild is now operating 565 units, with another 235 units in the “final stages of development,” the company tells us. It’s also operating in six cities currently — Austin, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Miami and Nashville — but it plans to land in six more in the next 12 to 24 months. (If you’re curious about how long it takes for a unit to become profitable, the company says the investment payback is traditionally within 12 months.)
As for how it’s breaking through the noise of its competitors, the company has a corporate sales team that works with companies like McKinsey, Google and Whole Foods, and it partners with travel companies, including Concur, Airbnb and Expedia.
Certainly, investors see promise in its strategy — and its momentum.
The Guild, which says it generated $10 million in revenue in 2018, tells us it generated more than $20 million in 2019 and that it expects to maintain 100% growth in 2020, thanks in part to its new round of funding.
If nothing else, Royole grabbed our attention a couple of years back by bringing the first foldable smartphone to market. There's something to be said for being first, I suppose. It raised the profile of a largely unknown name in amongst the tech press, even if it didn't exactly kickstart a form-factor revolution. Among other things, the FlexPai seemed firmly stuck in the prototype stage, to be perfectly honest.
RoTree, manufactured by Royole, consists of 500 units of fully flexible screens. As light and thin as real tree leaves, RoTree offers more than that – people can change images or videos on the leaves! The tree is "planted" at Shenzhen Bao'An Int'l Airport as new airport landmark! pic.twitter.com/8J7HNH9ONF
— Royole Corporation (@RoyoleOfficial) June 28, 2019
But, okay, fine. Royole, you've got our attention. I've seen your foldable phone tree firsthand at the Shenzhen airport. So, what do have for us now? More interesting stuff, surely. The company was showcasing a pair of new devices at CES this week, all seemingly filling a similar function as the FlexPai: demonstrating the potential for flexible display technology. That, in fact, seems to be Royole's primary M.O.
Leading the bunch is the Mirage Smart Speaker. It's basically an Amazon echo with an eight-inch flexible AMOLED wrapped around the body. So, a flexible display that can't be actively flexed by the user — though honestly, the act of flexing it tends to be where we start running into trouble. Instead, it offers a wraparound visual, so, like a built-in Winamp visualizer on your device. Kind of fun.
There's also a camera built-in, which, I don't know. Maybe smart speakers don't need cameras? Maybe that's just me?
There's a new version of the company's RoWrite, which is basically a standard pad of paper with sensors embedded that let you digitize your writing and drawing. The idea is to give the feel of paper with the benefits of digital. The new RoWrite is significantly smaller and lighter, with better battery.
CES has never been a great show for serious robotics. It's not a phenomenon I expect to change at any point in the near future, though things do seem to get slightly better each year. Pollen Robotics is an interesting addition to the mix that largely revolves around things like companion and smart home robotics.
Pollen Robotics certainly stands out from that crowd, offering a robotic torso named Reachy. The two arms, chest and a head are an open-source platform designed for prototyping and research purposes. The system just went up for sale this week as either a standalone arm ($9,000) or full half-body ($17,000), but the three-year-old French startup says it already has clients.
"We are working with a lab in France that works on prosthetics," a staff member told me at CES. "We're also working with an engineering school to teach mechanics, robotics and AI. There are big innovation labs that want to explore robotics for service and start prototyping service robotics."
It's a broad range of potential applications, starting with the simple tic-tac-toe game Reachy was playing at the show. That was designed for a company with presentation needs. In this case, the robot fills a similar need as Pepper, essentially using the technology to draw people in to something like a convention booth. It certainly worked in this case.
Research robots, meanwhile, are a needed, but difficult to monetize, category. Prominent companies like Willow Garage and Rethink Robotics have classroom mainstays, but have ultimately faded away. Reachy doesn't look to have quite the sophistication as those systems, but the (relatively) low price point could certainly hold some appeal.
The project's open-source nature, too, could ultimately be a benefit for researchers and startups alike.
Toyota researches and tests robotics, material science, automated driving and alternative fuel technology in labs all around the world. Now the automaker is trying a new and far more ambitious project: build a prototype city on a 175-acre site at the foot of Mount Fugi in Japan, where people will live and work amongst all of Toyota’s projects, including its autonomous e-Palette shuttles and robots.
This won’t be another test site, Toyota Motor Corp President Akio Toyoda said Monday during a press conference ahead of CES 2020. Construction on the first phase of the city — which will be designed by acclaimed Danish architect Bjarke Ingels — will begin in 2021. His firm, Ingels Group (BIG) has designed high-profile projects such as 2 World Trade Center in New York, the Lego House in Denmark and Google’s Mountain View and London headquarters.
This is a passion project of Toyoda’s, several executives said after the press conference. And it was evident on stage.
“It’s my personal fields of dreams,” Toyoda said. “If they build it, they will come.”
“Imagine a fully controlled site that will allow researchers, engineers and scientists the opportunity to freely test technology such as autonomy, mobility-as-a-service, robotics, smart home-connected technology, AI and more, in a real-world environment,” Toyoda said.
This so-called Woven City will be a fully connected ecosystem powered by hydrogen fuel cells, according to Toyota.
The homes will be equipped with human support technologies, such as in-home robotics to assist with daily living. Sensor-based AI will be sprinkled throughout to be able to check on occupants’ health and take care of basic needs.
Forget driving around a Toyota Camry or even Prius on the main streets there. Only fully-autonomous, zero-emission vehicles will be allowed on the main thoroughfares, according to the company. Autonomous Toyota e-Palettes will be used for transportation and deliveries as well as for changeable mobile retail.
Today, SmileDirectClub announced a partnership with Walmart to sell a new line of oral care products, including toothbrushes, teeth whitening treatments, a water flosser and more. For one of the top teledentistry companies, this represents a move to make its business more compelling to customers and investors alike.
Following news of the deal this morning, SmileDirectClub shares spiked, with the stock currently trading up about 21% at $10.19. That’s significant for a company that had one of the worst first-day performances of any initial public offering over $1 billion in the U.S. since 2007. Still, SmileDirectClub’s stock is nowhere near its IPO price of $23.
SmileDirectClub’s entrance into the more traditional dental care space is clearly a move to try to differentiate itself from the likes of smaller startups like Uniform Teeth and Candid, while also creeping into oral healthcare startup Quip’s territory. As the dental care space gets more crowded, it’s no wonder why SmileDirectClub is looking to expand into already-proven business models.
SmileDirectClub’s main competitor in the more traditional dental care space — other than legacy brands like Crest and Colgate — is Quip . The New York-based startup has raised more than $60 million in funding and has sold its oral care products at Target since October 2018.
As of this week's CES, Mophie can add cars to the growing list of things powered with its battery line. It was a matter of time, I suppose. Certainly the company's not the first to offer this level of charge in a portable power bank, but the new Powerstation Go brings an extra level of juice to its offerings.
The new brick is also unique in the Mophie line in its inclusion of mini jumper cables, which harness the weighty 44,400mWh of charge to jump start a car or SUV. Sounds like a pretty handy thing to toss in the back of a car, in case of emergency. And, honestly, the $160 price tag isn't crazy, given Mophie's usual premium over lesser-known battery companies.
But its position as a consumer electronics brand means the product is also focused on smartphones and the like. There's a Qi charging pad up top for convenience. Obviously that's not going to charge up your devices as quickly as wired methods, so there are two USB-A ports and an AC outlet so you can plug directly in.
Strangely, there are no USB-C ports on board. That certainly seems like an odd omission in 2020 — especially on a device that very much has a kitchen-sink approach to charging everything from phones to SUVs.
TCL is hardly a household name in the smartphone space. That's hardly surprising, however, as the Chinese electronics company is better known for sub-brands like Alcatel and BlackBerry (hardware, not software — long story). Late last year, the company began really pushing its branded devices in Europe, a strategy it's set to expand upon with some more cutting-edge devices.
The company's been teasing the launch of both 5G and foldable handsets since last year, and is finally offering a little more info — on the former, at least. The TCL 10 5G will be its first 5G handset, following the release of an Alcatel-branded router last year. The device is set for a Q2 launch in the U.S. and Canada.
It's one of three TCL 10 devices set for launch, with pricing on the line starting at less than $500. It's clear that budget will continue to be a primary selling point for the line, though one assumes the 5G model will carry a not-insignificant premium on top of that. The device will be powered by Qualcomm's 5G SoC line. The chipmaker introduced the 765 late last year, with the intent of offering a more affordable entry-point for the next-gen wireless technology.
[gallery ids="1929194,1929195,1929197,1929198"]
And then there's the matter of the foldable. At press time, we don't have much information about the device, first alluded to at last year's Mobile World Congress. What we do have, however, are a lot more renders. The fact that it's still listed as "Foldable Smartphone Concept" doesn't give one a lot of confidence that it's ready for prime time.
The images do, however, point to a form factor similar to Samsung's Galaxy Fold, along with what appears to be a quartet of rear-facing cameras. More information, one assumes, at Mobile World Congress late next month. So, something to look forward to in Barcelona, I guess.
And who can forgot Project Archery? Just kidding. Forgetting it would require that you've heard about it in the first place. I'm going to go out on a limb and say probably you have not. The device was announced — or, rather, alluded to — at last year's IFA. It's a wearable display with a "cinematic viewing experience." We've seen those come and go over the years. TCL's shown off the 2.0 version of the product, but offered up no additional information.
The recovery in value of several high-profile electric car companies could help move yet-private EV manufacturers out of the pit lane and onto the IPO track.
Lixiang Automotive is a Beijing-based company that was founded in 2015, according to Crunchbase data. The company has raised north of $1 billion while private, and is said to be valued at just under $3 billion. It most recently raised a $530 million round led by Xing Wang, of Meituan-Dianping fame.
It would not be the first Chinese EV company to go public in the United States, as NIO managed the feat in 2018. But the reported filing shows newfound confidence concerning investor sentiment by the alternative car market’s players and bankers.
To understand the news, we’ll first look at recent happenings from Lixiang’s public peers, and then examine the company itself.
A month ago, the Lixiang Automotive confidential IPO filing would have appeared quixotic. After all, its closest market comparable was flirting with penny-stock status.
NIO was in the tank more than a year after an IPO that proved far from smooth. After going public at $6.26 per share, its equity had traded down to nearly the $1 mark, setting a 52-week low at the terrifying figure of $1.19 per share. However, since then, shares of the unprofitable, cash-strapped EV manufacturer have recovered, trading for $3.84 per share today. Still down from its IPO price, yes, but up more than 200% from its recent all-time lows (a more than tripling in value).
Tesla’s ascent also helped. After some oddly normal (for Tesla) drama cooled, the company’s shares have come back a long way. From 52-week lows of $176.99, Elon’s car company is now worth $445.25. Shares of Tesla are up 150% from their lows, a more than doubling in market cap. Investors appeared to find its earnings and delivery totals (and progress on its Chinese factory) heartening.
For Lixiang Automotive, the moves showed that U.S. equity markets were warming waters worth testing. Given that it is certainly unprofitable, the opening of a new funding avenue was welcome.
Notably, similar to NIO when it went public, the company is set to debut while its history of actually delivering cars is nascent. NIO went public having delivered cars in the mere hundreds. The firm did note at the time that it had commits north of 10,000 for its cars. During the early days of its IPO I wrote that the company’s limited history of revenue generation made its shares a gamble.
Lixiang is set to go public at a similar level of immaturity. According to Equal Ocean, Lixiang now delivers cars, though it began to ship them just last month:
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Lixiang Automotive, formerly known as CHJ, has announced that its EV project ‘Lixiang ONE 2020’ is officially mass-produced at the Changzhou factory and will start mass delivery in early December.
Pre-sales for the car took place in Q4 2019, as well, meaning that the company’s pre-Q4 2019 revenue should wind up looking very light.
If Lixiang does successfully go public it will show that corporate maturity is not a requirement for an IPO. When we do get to see Lixiang’s F-1 filing, we won’t see the history of a company with an obvious path to profits amid quick growth — we’ll see a deeply unprofitable company in the early motion of generating material revenue.
A little bit ago I would have given such an offering slim chance of success. But with NIO on the bounce and Tesla back on form, who knows?
AMD is holding its CES press conference today at 2 PM Pacific, 5 PM Eastern. Expect some news when it comes to consumer CPUs (Ryzen), enterprise CPUs (Epyc) as well as ray tracing-enabled GPUs. It should give us some hints about what to expect from the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, as both of those consoles will be powered by AMD chips.
We'll have a team on the ground, so you should also check out our full CES coverage.
I know, I know. Laptops fold. Convertibles fold. I get it, you're being pedantic. So let's just move past all of that and talk about this funky new thing from Lenovo. The company just announced the ThinkPad X1 Fold — the delivery of the device it teased back in May of last year.
The product is probably best described as the lovechild of a foldable phone and a laptop. You've got to hand it to Lenovo — while it's true not every device is a runaway success, the company is more than happy to experiment with interesting concepts in between more straight-laced office-minded offerings.
More than anything, the X1 Fold is the latest in a long line of convertible form factors attempting to bring the best of tablets and laptops to a single form factor. Maybe there's a seed of an idea here. We'll see the thing in person, soon, but if early foldable phones are any indication, it could be a bit rough going at first. That said, Lenovo's new Motorola Razr might be the closest of all to sticking the landing.
The laptop has a 13.3-inch display when unfolded, making it fairly compact. There's also a magnetic Bluetooth keyboard that can sit on the bottom half of the screen for a full laptop effect, or be detached to be used with the fully unfolded screen (the $24 stand is not included). When the system's not in use, it sits in the middle, charging wirelessly. I'm not sure how practical any of this is until I get a chance to try it out, but honestly, it's pretty cool.
The screen is pOLED, manufactured by LG. Lenovo says the durability tests have been "extensive," though if past is prologue, sometimes some real-world testing is required to really put a system through its paces. The folding mechanism is reinforced with a carbon fiber plate.
The Fold is expected to drop at some point in the middle of the year, priced at around $2,499, with Windows 10. There's a Windows 10X version that will be available down the road, as well.
Chances are, your phone and carrier now support HD voice quality for those few times you still make a call. Those calls sound significantly better than regular calls, but if you’re using a Bluetooth headset to make those calls, you don’t get any of the benefits of HD voice because those devices don’t support that codec. Now, with aptX Voice, an evolution of its existing aptX codec, Qualcomm wants to bring high-quality calls to your Bluetooth devices, too.
With aptX Voice, devices will get 32kHz samples audio with a flat 16kHz frequency response quality as part of the Bluetooth Handsfree Profile that accessories use to connect to your phone. That makes for greater call quality, even when somebody is using a speakerphone or talking quietly.
“aptX technology revolutionized the Bluetooth stereo listening experience by bringing unprecedented wireless audio quality, and aptX Voice is set to do the same for voice calls," said James Chapman, the vice president and general manager for Voice, Music and Wearables at Qualcomm . “As consumers increasingly use wireless headsets and earbuds for making and receiving calls, aptX Voice is the answer to ensuring higher clarity and quality of call experience.”
AptX Voice is now available on the Snapdragon 865 and 765 mobile platforms and will become available for accessories based on Qualcomm’s upcoming range of Bluetooth Audio SoC that will launch in 2020. Until then, you’ll just have to speak a little bit louder.
Qualcomm today announced its Car-to-Cloud service, which does exactly what the name implies: it helps car companies connect their cars to their clouds. It’s the companies first product that integrates its automotive cockpit platform and Snapdragon automotive platforms with 4G and 5G support.
The platform will help automakers keep their cars up to date and allow them to update their infotainment platforms over the air. In addition, they also can use the service to gather vehicle and usage analytics, which Qualcomm argues will allow them to unlock new revenue streams as it allows carmakers to market pay-as-you-go services and unlockable features to their drivers.
As car ownership is changing, so are drivers’ expectations. Having an updatable infotainment system is pretty standard on new cars these days, but those updates usually happen over Wi-Fi (or at the dealership). Qualcomm argues that this service helps to make cars future proof and will lead to faster deployment time frames for updates, as well as more cost-efficient operations. It also notes that this technology will provide for new connected services and better on-demand services for car sharing as Car-as-a-Service companies.
For drivers, it’ll lead to more personalized experiences, which today are normal in the high-end market but are only slowly trickling down to more affordable cars. But Qualcomm is definitely also pushing the fact that this will allow car companies to sell bundled content, apps and services to drivers, creating new revenue streams for them.
“The Qualcomm Car-to-CloudService, when combined with our Snapdragon Automotive 4G and 5G Platforms, and our Snapdragon Automotive Cockpit Platforms, empowers automakers and tier-1 suppliers to address new expectations of the modern and discerning car owner who is used to flexible and continuously updating technologies, while also unlocking new features capabilities over the course of a vehicle's lifetime," said Nakul Duggal, senior vice president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies.
Antonia Rojas Eing, the youngest female partner of Latin America's major VCs, has joined ALLVP as a partner.
Twenty-nine-year-old Rojas Eing first entered the investment world in Germany (she is half Chilean, half German), but with a real estate angle. "I learned the discipline and analysis needed to make an investment decision, and how to see the world from an international perspective," she noted.
Good VCs are often founders-turned-investors. Rojas Eing has worked on the startup side as well, as she pursued an entrepreneurial project with an ed tech startup a few years ago, although that company is no longer in existence. She experienced how hard it was to raise early-stage capital in Chile — a problem she is back now to solve. After some time in the Bay Area pursuing a master’s degree in social entrepreneurship, she returned to Chile to invest in seed-stage startups with a fund called Manutara. Now, after months of mentorship with ALLVP, she will be joining the Mexico-based fund as their third partner.
Rojas Eing says her first focus will be on enterprise SaaS in Colombia, Mexico and Chile. "Latin America is the biggest untapped VC opportunity in the world, and ALLVP is all about transforming and improving the way Latin Americans lead daily lives." Indeed, Latin American startups can get funding if they're solving serious pain points for the region’s massive, digitally engaged middle class.
ALLVP is one of the most active new wave funds in Spanish-speaking Latin America right now. The firm, which was founded in 2012, was an early backer of Cornershop, the Chilean grocery delivery startup that raised $31.7 million (mostly from Silicon Valley's Accel) and exited to Uber (after a $225 million deal with Walmart unraveled after being blocked by antitrust regulators in Mexico). ALLVP has also invested in Colombian cloud kitchen MUY and Mexican Opendoor clone Flat. The firm has more than $200 million in assets under management across three portfolios, having closed its third $100 million fund in 2018.
The relationship between Rojas Eing and ALLVP serendipitously began at the TechCrunch São Paulo Battlefield event in 2018, when Rojas Eing and ALLVP general partner Fernando Lelo de Larrea judged a Startup Battlefield session together.
Antonia Rojas Eing and Fernando Lelo de Larrea judge Startup Battlefield São Paulo in November 2018.
Toward the end of 2019, SoftBank began rapidly deploying its $5 billion Latin America-focused Innovation Fund, enabling growth-stage financing for companies like Brazil's QuintoAndar, Mexico's Konfio and Argentina's Uala. "SoftBank is a confirmation that Latin America is going through a special moment, and it allows us to think big. SoftBank has already transformed the region and will continue to do so," says Rojas Eing.
As the youngest female partner in this part of the globe, one can't help asking what it's like to compete in a male-dominated field, let alone in a region that has historically been socially and politically hostile to women.
For example, Magma Partners’ Sophia Wood points out that “married women in Chile could not purchase real estate or open a credit card without their husband's permission until 1977, and divorce was only legalized in 2004. As recently as 2018, Chile's ‘sociedad conyugal’ marriage law still prohibited women from managing joint financial accounts — up to 50% of Chileans are currently married under this law. Similar laws have restricted women's access to credit, capital and even education across Latin America until the recent past.”
Undoubtedly, sexist rhetoric has bled into the tech scene in regards to funding female-led companies. "Only .4 percent of the $400 billion in venture capital funding deployed between 2009 and 2017 went to Latin American women," details the same report.
"You cannot be moving with doubt," remarks Rojas Eing. From her vantage point as a 29-year-old female partner, she feels responsibility to surface conversations about gender imbalance and inclusivity in her work.
"Women entrepreneurs and investors represent the largest untapped pool of talent in the world. Working in a relatively young ecosystem such as Latin America provides us with the unique opportunity of creating a more inclusive entrepreneurial and VC community from the start," says ALLVP partner Federico Antoni.
In an industry historically dominated by toxic masculinity, sexist frameworks of thinking and extreme gender imbalance, there's an opportunity to grow the inverse of these worldviews. Hopefully, leaders in Latin American tech will instate tactical measures to encourage positive masculinity in its rapidly expanding startup culture, and we will see more women assigned into leadership roles at startups and funds.
Perhaps as Latin America's nascent tech revolution explodes, founders and investors can learn from Silicon Valley's pioneering mistakes in blitzscaling, valuing profitability over growth and startup culture that have kept women underrepresented and unsafe at work for over a decade.
As far as ALLVP's track record goes, partner Federico Antoni says that female founders made up 33% of their first fund, and that 20% of the companies in their second portfolio were co-founded or founded by a woman. The third fund has yet to invest in a female entrepreneur.
Expanding the pipeline to reach more female entrepreneurs is a focus for ALLVP, and the fund says that while the ALLVP team meets with only a third of pipeline opportunities, they offer meetings with any female founder.
More funds are diving into content marketing. Sites and blogs leverage SEO to widen the top of the funnel. Podcasts and newsletters help funds establish themselves as thought leaders and grow interest from the brightest founders. ALLVP is tapping into the content opportunity with a monthly podcast series that educates around the gender imbalance in tech, too.
Representation matters, and women fund women. ALLVP hopes that bringing Antonia on to the team will help the fund be a better partner to women. "Having her on board is not a box we checked but part of a process that will ultimately lead us to a more balanced team, portfolio, and better returns," Antoni said.
Assigning more women to leadership roles is certainly one step in the right direction.
Japanese startup FPV Robotics is leveraging drone technology to address a growing global need: inspecting aging infrastructure in an effort to avoid major issues like unexpected bridge collapses. FPV Robotics CEO and founder Masaki Komagata showed me his company’s production Waver drone, which is debuting for the first time ever at CES 2020 in Las Vegas this week.
Waver is an amphibious drone, which can fly thanks to eight rotors, and also speed along the surface of bodies of water using its floats. This dual nature makes it particularly well-suited to solving a very specific task — a problem Komagata set out specifically to solve after observing that Japan Railways (JR) needed this addressed.
This specific problem was rail bridge collapse, including damaged and destroyed bridges along the Tadami River in 2011 due to floods in Niigata and Fukushima. Many of the spans that JR relies upon for its Shinkansen and other local trains in Japan are considerably old, and beginning to show their age. That wear can be further exasperated by environmental disasters — which are occurring with greater frequency as a result of climate change.
FPV Robotics can’t magically repair this aging infrastructure or prevent natural disasters, but it can deliver on-demand, flexible monitoring and inspection at a greatly reduced cost compared to current methods. Komagata partnered with JR and with sensor company OKI on development of the Waver to custom-design it specifically for this use, which is where it got its amphibious abilities and attached multibeam sensor array.
This multibeam technology, provided by OKI, is installed on the bottom of the Waver drone and provides sonar imaging capabilities that allow the drone to accurately map the bottom of a river or seabed from the water’s surface. This information, Komagata tells me, can be used to help predict when infrastructure, including bridges and roads, might need to be replaced or reinforced, prior to any actual collapse or damage.
Waver can autonomously map a predetermined section of riverbed, moving like a Roomba across the water in segment sweeps to build the full picture. It’s also equipped with eight rotors, more than your average VTOL drone, which Komagata tells me is for added redundancy so that it can continue to operate effectively even in the unlikely event that it loses power to multiple rotors at once.
In addition to the sea and river bed inspection, the Waver can do a visual inspection of the bridge itself from up close using a more traditional camera, as well as the supporting land from which it extends. Komagata points out that this kind of multi-part inspection can require specialized boats, many hours of trained personnel time, things like temporary scaffolding for a close-up eyes-on approach and a lot more. He estimates based on studies FPV has done that their drone could reduce inspection costs to as little as 1/20th the cost of existing methods. That means it would be possible to monitor much more frequently than can be done currently, and in circumstances where risk to human inspectors on the ground might be a necessary component of using more traditional means.
Waver estimates that just taking into account bridges alone, there’s a roughly $25 million per year total addressable market, and it’s aiming to acquire around 4% of that (roughly $1 million in revenue) in 2020, and then to grow that by about $2 million per year in the next two fiscal years. It’s currently mostly bootstrapped, with 90% of the startup’s existing ¥30,700,000 ($300,000) in seed funding coming from Komagata himself. With that capital, the company has already gone from working prototype (which you can see in the GIF above) to the much more polished production version debuted at CES.
Komagata, an engineer with a focus in drone development, envisions Waver being able to address challenges with aging infrastructure not just in Japan, but globally, though FPV’s initial focus is on the market opportunity at home. Ultimately, he hopes that Waver and other drone technology FPV Robotics brings to market helps to “make the world a better place,” and addressing challenges like infrastructure inspection is definitely a good place to start.
Echodyne set the radar industry on its ear when it debuted its pocket-sized yet hyper-capable radar unit for drones and aircraft. But these days all the action is in autonomous vehicles — so they reinvented their technology to make a unique sensor that doesn’t just see things but can communicate intelligently with the AI behind the wheel.
EchoDrive, the company’s new product, is aimed squarely at AVs, looking to complement lidar and cameras with automotive radar that’s as smart as you need it to be.
The chief innovation at Echodyne is the use of metamaterials, or highly engineered surfaces, to create a radar unit that can direct its beam quickly and efficiently anywhere in its field of view. That means that it can scan the whole horizon quickly, or repeatedly play the beam over a single object to collect more detail, or anything in between, or all three at once for that matter, with no moving parts and little power.
But the device Echodyne created for release in 2017 was intended for aerospace purposes, where radar is more widely used, and its capabilities were suited for that field: a range of kilometers but a slow refresh rate. That’s great for detecting and reacting to distant aircraft, but not at all what’s needed for autonomous vehicles, which are more concerned with painting a detailed picture of the scene within a hundred meters or so.
“They said they wanted high-resolution, automotive bands [i.e. radiation wavelengths], high refresh rates, wide field of view, and still have that beam-steering capability — can you build a radar like that?,” recalled Echodyne co-founder and CEO Eben Frankenberg. “And while it’s taken a little longer than I thought it would, the answer is yes, we can!”
The EchoDrive system meets all the requirements set out by the company’s automotive partners and testers, with up to 60hz refresh rates, higher resolution than any other automotive radar and all the other goodies.
An example of some raw data — note that Doppler information lets the system tell which objects are moving which direction.
The company is focused specifically on level 4-5 autonomy, meaning their radar isn’t intended for basic features like intelligent cruise control or collision detection. But radar units on cars today are intended for that, and efforts to juice them up into more serious sensors are dubious, Frankenberg said.
“Most ADAS [advanced driver assist system] radars have relatively low resolution in a raw sense, and do a whole lot of processing of the data to make it clearer and make it more accurate as far as the position of an object,” he explained. “The level 4-5 folks say, we don’t want all that processing because we don’t know what they’re doing. They want to know you’re not doing something in the processing that’s throwing away real information.”
More raw data, and less processing — but Echodyne’s tech offers something more. Because the device can change the target of its beam on the fly, it can do so in concert with the needs of the vehicle’s AI.
Say an autonomous vehicle’s brain has integrated the information from its suite of sensors and can’t be sure whether an object it sees a hundred meters out is a moving or stationary bicycle. It can’t tell its regular camera to get a better image, or its lidar to send more lasers. But it can tell Echodyne’s radar to focus its beam on that object for a bit longer or more frequently.
The two-way conversation between sensor and brain, which Echodyne calls cognitive radar or knowledge-aided measurement, isn’t really an option yet — but it will have to be if AVs are going to be as perceptive as we’d like them to be.
Some companies, Frankenberg pointed out, are putting on the sensors themselves the responsibility for deciding which objects or regions need more attention — a camera may very well be able to decide where to look next in some circumstances. But on the scale of a fraction of a second, and involving the other resources available to an AV — only the brain can do that.
EchoDrive is currently being tested by Echodyne’s partner companies, which it would not name but which Frankenberg indicated are running level 4+ AVs on public roads. Given the growing number of companies that fit those once-narrow criteria, it would be irresponsible to speculate on their identities, but it’s hard to imagine an automaker not getting excited by the advantages Echodyne claims.
AWS took a hard blow last year when it lost the $10 billion, decade-long JEDI cloud contract to rival Microsoft. Yet even without that mega deal for building out the nation’s Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure, the company remains fully in control of the cloud infrastructure market — and it intends to fight that decision.
In fact, AWS still owns almost twice as much cloud infrastructure market share as Microsoft, its closest rival. While the two will battle over the next decade for big contracts like JEDI, for now, AWS doesn’t have much to worry about.
There was a lot more to AWS’s year than simply losing JEDI. Per usual, the news came out with a flurry of announcements and enhancements to its vast product set. Among the more interesting moves was a shift to the edge, the fact the company is getting more serious about the chip business and a big dose of machine learning product announcements.
The fact is that AWS has such market momentum now, it’s a legitimate question to ask if anyone, even Microsoft, can catch up. The market is continuing to expand though, and the next battle is for that remaining market share. AWS CEO Andy Jassy spent more time than in the past trashing Microsoft at 2019’s re:Invent customer conference in December, imploring customers to move to the cloud faster and showing that his company is preparing for a battle with its rivals in the years ahead.
AWS closed 2019 on a $36 billion run rate, growing from $7.43 billion in in its first report in January to $9 billion in earnings for its most recent earnings report in October. Believe it or not, according to CNBC, that number failed to meet analysts expectations of $9.1 billion, but still accounted for 13% of Amazon’s revenue in the quarter.
Regardless, AWS is a juggernaut, which is fairly amazing when you consider that it started as a side project for Amazon .com in 2006. In fact, if AWS were a stand-alone company, it would be a substantial business. While growth slowed a bit last year, that’s inevitable when you get as large as AWS, says John Dinsdale, VP, chief analyst and general manager at Synergy Research, a firm that follows all aspects of the cloud market.
“This is just math and the law of large numbers. On average over the last four quarters, it has incremented its revenues by well over $500 million per quarter. So it has grown its quarterly revenues by well over $2 billion in a twelve-month period,” he said.
Dinsdale added, “To put that into context, this growth in quarterly revenue is bigger than Google's total revenues in cloud infrastructure services. In a very large market that is growing at over 35% per year, AWS market share is holding steady.”
Dinsdale says the cloud infrastructure market didn’t quite break $100 billion last year, but even without full Q4 results, his firm’s models project a total of around $95 billion, up 37% over 2018. AWS has more than a third of that. Microsoft is way back at around 17% with Google in third with around 8 or 9%.
While this is from Q1, it illustrates the relative positions of companies in the cloud market. Chart: Synergy Research
JEDI disappointment
It would be hard to do any year-end review of AWS without discussing JEDI. From the moment the Department of Defense announced its decade-long, $10 billion cloud RFP, it has been one big controversy after another.
Until now, Brilliant only offered its relatively high-end smart switches with a touchscreen, but at CES this week, the company is expanding its product lineup with a new dimmer switch and smart plug. Both require that you already own at least one Brilliant Control, so these aren’t standalone devices but instead expansions to the Brilliant Control system.
The main advantage here is that once you have bought into the Brilliant system for your smart home setup, you won’t need to get a new Brilliant Control for every room. Because the Controls start at $299 for a single switch, that would be a very pricey undertaking. At $69.99, the dimmer is competitively priced (and offers a discount for bundles with multiple switches), as is the plug, at $29.99. This will surely make the overall Brilliant system more attractive to a lot of people.I’ve tested the Control in my house for the last few weeks and came away impressed, mostly because it brings a single, flexible physical control system to the disparate smart plugs, locks and other gadgets I’ve accumulated over the last year or so. I couldn’t imagine getting one for every room, though, as that would simply be far too expensive. Brilliant’s system works with Alexa and Google Assistant, and includes third-party integrations with companies like Philips Hue, LIFX, TP-Link Lutron, Wemo, Ecobee, Honeywell, August, Kwikset, Schlage, Ring, Sonos and others. The different Brilliant devices communicate over a Bluetooth Mesh and connect to the internet over Wi-Fi.
“Before Brilliant, an integrated whole-home smart home and lighting system meant either spending tens of thousands of dollars on an inflexible home automation system, or piecing together a jumble of disparate devices and apps," said Aaron Emigh, co-founder and CEO of Brilliant. “With our new smart switch and plug-in combination with the Brilliant Control, we are realizing our mission to make it possible for every homeowner to experience the comfort, energy efficiency, safety and convenience of living in a true smart home.”
One nice feature of the dimmer is that it includes a motion sensor, which will allow for a lot of interesting usage scenarios. You’ll also be able to double-tap the switch to trigger a smart home or lighting scene.
The plug is obviously more straightforward. It’s a Wemo-style plug that you simply plug in. Unlike Brilliant’s devices, which require that you either have to be comfortable with doing some very basic electrical work yourself (and Brilliant offers very straightforward instructions) or have somebody install it for you, this one is indeed plug and play.
Synergy Group submits fresh EoI for Jet Airways A representative from the court last month told India's insolvency tribunal that the group wanted assurance on Jet's erstwhile domestic slots and the slots in Heathrow Airport, London, and the Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam. Following the grounding of Jet Airways, the government had reallocated the domestic slots to other airlines.
