* The Chinese government has attempted to be transparent about the new coronavirus outbreak * But citizens are wary, remembering when officials covered up the SARS epidemic from 2002 to 2004 * Authorities first led the public to believe the coronavirus outbreak was 'under control' and 'mild' * Social media posts with updates about the outbreak are also 'quickly deleted' * So far, more than 800 cases have been confirmed across the globe and 25 people have died
Chinese citizens fear the government is not disclosing every thing it knows about the new, mysterious coronavirus that is spreading across the globe.
The virus, known as 2019-nCoV, was first discovered in the city of Wuhan, home to 11 million people and capital of the Hubei province.
So far figures show more than 800 people have been sickened and 25 have died, and China's government, which has tight control on the country's media and Internet, has been showing signs of greater transparency than usual.
But citizen are wary, remembering how authorities covered up the SARS outbreak from 2002 to 2004, which - experts say - led to so many deaths.
* 27% of Americans said they agreed President Donald Trump should be charged with war crimes over the drone strike that killed Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, according to a new Insider poll. * Though regarded as a terrorist by the US, Soleimani was Iran's top general and his killing marked a major escalation in the long history of hostilities between Washington and Tehran. * The Trump administration has been extremely hostile toward the International Criminal Court (ICC) in attempts to investigate possible war crimes by the US in Afghanistan. * The US does not recognize the ICC's authority.
In the wake of the US assassination of Iran's most important military leader, Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, more than a quarter of Americans believe The Hague should bring war-crime charges against President Donald Trump, according to a new Insider poll.
The Insider poll, which ran on Wednesday, found that roughly 27% of the 1,083 respondents said they agreed with Iran that Trump should face a war crime tribunal. The poll did not ask for respondents' opinions on other aspects of Iran's position, including Tehran's desire to bring war-crime charges against the US military and federal government.
The defence ministry on Tuesday cleared two Indian and five foreign shipbuilders to take part in a Rs 50,000-crore project to build high-tech submarines in the country, one of the biggest Make in India programmes in the military sector, two senior officials said on condition of anonymity.
Six advanced submarines will be built under project P-75I to scale up the Indian Navy's undersea warfare capabilities and counter the rapid expansion of China's submarine fleet. The project will be pursued under the government's 'strategic partnership' (SP) model, which seeks to provide fillip to the government's Make in India programme.
Key Point: Modifications to the weapon improves the acoustic receiver, replaces the guidance-and-control hardware with updated technology, increases memory, and improves processor throughput to handle the expanded software demands required to improve torpedo performance against evolving threats, according to Navy information on the weapon.
The U.S. Navy is now prototyping a new, longer range and more lethal submarine-launched heavyweight Mk 48 that can better destroy enemy ships, subs and incoming weapons at longer ranges, service officials said.
Many details of the new weapon, which include newer propulsion mechanisms and multiple kinds of warheads, are secret and not publically available. However, senior Navy leaders have talked to Scout Warrior about the development of the weapon in a general sense.

BEIJING (Reuters) - A new coronavirus has killed 25 people in China and infected more than 800, the government said on Friday, as the World Health Organization declared it an emergency but stopped short of declaring the epidemic of international concern.
China's National Health Commission said 830 cases had been confirmed so far and 25 people had died as of Thursday. Most of the cases are in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, where the virus is believed to have originated late last year.

ABOARD THE USS BATAAN IN THE RED SEA — The United States hopes to avert a conflict with Iran but will maintain an expanded military footprint in the Middle East amid heightened tensions, the head of U.S. Central Command said Thursday during a visit to the region.
Gen. Kenneth "Frank" McKenzie Jr. said that new air, naval and troop deployments were intended to restore deterrence and send a signal to Tehran following a period in which tit-for-tat Iranian and U.S. attacks pushed the region to the brink of war.
"The message is, we don't seek war with you. You should not seek war with us. And we would like to de-escalate to a lower level of tensions, if that's possible," McKenzie told reporters after visiting the USS Bataan, an amphibious assault ship operating in the northern Red Sea.
The general's public remarks were his first since an American airstrike killed Iranian Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani in Baghdad on Jan. 3. The U.S. government viewed Soleimani, who was the leader of Iran's elite Quds Force, as the mastermind of years of violence against American personnel.
WNU Editor: Considering how high tensions are with Iran, I do not foresee any serious US military draw-down in the Middle East for the foreseeable future.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday proposed holding a summit between the leaders of Russia, China, the United States, France and Britain in 2020 to discuss the conflict in Libya and other global problems.
Putin, who was speaking during a trip to Israel, said Moscow was ready for a "serious conversation" with the permanent members of the UN Security Council, that there was much to discuss and that the summit could happen anywhere in the world.
n a unanimous move in the State Duma, lawmakers backed a bill seeking to overhaul several articles of the constitution, just a week after President Putin proposed major amendments to the law including about his own post.
Proposed by Vladimir Putin in his annual state-of-the-nation address, the changes seek to give more powers to parliament, which will be able to pick the prime minister. The premier's cabinet picks, currently not requiring a nod from MPs, would require parliamentary confirmation and could not be rejected by the president.
WNU Editor: After tabling the bill to amend the constitution, it was approved unanimously by the Duma within two hours. This is the definition of a rubber-stamp parliament.

STUTTGART, Germany – The largest exercise in Europe for U.S. forces in 25 years will kick off Thursday at motor pools in the U.S., where soldiers will begin loading tanks and other gear for transport to the Continent, the Army said.
About 20,000 pieces of military equipment must be deployed from the U.S. for Defender-Europe 20, which will involve large-scale combat drills and test the military's ability to rapidly move large numbers of forces across the Atlantic Ocean.
Units from Fort Hood, Fort Bliss and Fort Stewart will load vehicles, heavy equipment and supplies for rail transport and onward shipping, the Army said in a statement Tuesday. Defender-Europe will include about 20,000 U.S.-based soldiers, 9,000 European-based U.S. troops, and 8,000 troops from 17 allied nations, the Army said.
The clock is at 100 seconds to midnight, the closest it has been since it launched It has been at two minutes to midnight since 2017 in part due to climate change The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists say there are multiple 'end of days' threats They say 'new norms of behaviour' are needed to push the clock hands back
The Doomsday clock has ticked forwards 20 seconds and stands just 100 seconds to midnight - the closest in its 73-year history - due to increased nuclear tensions and climate change, bringing us closer to the apocalypse than ever before.
The clock was founded by the US scientists involved in the Manhattan Project that developed the world's first nuclear weapons during World War 2.
It is a symbolic countdown designed to represent the time to a possible global catastrophe and is maintained by scientists including 16 Nobel laureates.
The group say the change - which is the closest the clock has ever been to the end of days - is due to the dual threats of nuclear war and climate change.
SARS-like disease first reported in China before spreading to Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea, Japan and US Major Chinese New Year events in Beijing have been cancelled, officials at the Chinese capital revealed today Today it emerged the infected US patient came into close contact with at least 16 people before quarantined Official figures show more than 600 patients have caught the infection, with cases cropping up all over Asia However, scientists yesterday warned as many as 10,000 people could have been infected in Wuhan alone Chilling footage has emerged from city of Wuhan, the outbreak's centre, showing quarantine tents and entire streets pumped with decontamination gas. Two neighbouring cities have also gone into lockdown European health officials said 'further global spread is likely' in a report, but World Health Organization meeting last night failed to declare the crisis a global emergency. Heath chiefs will meet again today
The deadly new coronavirus spreading across Asia is far more contagious than previously feared and can be spread third-hand via a simple cough or sneeze, medics have today confirmed.
Eighteen people with the virus are now confirmed to have died and more than 600 have been infected in at least 10 countries. But experts predict the true number of people with the disease could be as many as 10,000 as they warn it may kill as many as two in 100 cases.
Nine towns and cities in China are now in lockdown while officials battle to stop the spread of the deadly new coronavirus. Major Chinese New Year events in Beijing have been cancelled, authorities in Ezhou have shut down train stations, and Huanggang has announced it will suspend public buses and trains.
The development comes as Wuhan – the city at the centre of the outbreak – remains in lockdown, with all flights in and outbound cancelled, residents banned from leaving and scenes of chaos as desperate families fight for food supplies.

GENEVA (Reuters) - The World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Thursday that the new coronavirus that has emerged in China and spread to several other countries does not yet constitute an international emergency but it was tracking its evolution "every minute".
WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the announcement after its Emergency Committee of 16 independent experts reviewed the latest evidence and made its recommendations, which he accepted.
The Pentagon is likely deploying a missile-defense system to Iraq in response to Iran's ballistic missile attack on an Iraqi base housing American troops earlier this month, U.S. defense officials tell Fox News.
The move comes after U.S. troops were sent to a medical facility in Germany after complaining of head injuries following the Iranian missile attack.
Eleven U.S. troops were flown out of Iraq late last week for treatment out of an "abundance of caution," according to a spokesman for American forces in the Middle East.
A number of Russian soldiers were badly beaten and airlifted to hospital after a fist-fight with American troops in Syria last week, it has been revealed. According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the incident occurred on 25 December in the city of Tal Tamr in Al-Hasakah province in north-east Syria.
When US troops arrived to collect information from local residents, the latter reportedly reacted negatively, and accused the Americans of betraying them with the withdrawal of US forces from the area ordered by President Donald Trump in October.
* New footage of a 2018 encounter between a Chinese and US warship has been released to the Post following a freedom of information request * Experts say it appears to show the Chinese PLA crew preparing for a collision
A newly-released US Navy video of the tense encounter between a Chinese and US warship in the South China Sea in late 2018 offers an indication of how seriously the Chinese side were prepared for a collision with the US vessel in the contested waterway.
In the footage of the incident, which at the time caused heated exchanges between Washington and Beijing, Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy crew can be seen preparing buoys designed to absorb impact and protect the hull of their ship in the event of a collision between a Chinese Luyang destroyer and the USS Decatur.
Keith Patton, deputy chairman of the Strategic and Operational Research Department at the US Naval War College, said the video suggested the Chinese crew believed a crash was imminent.
"It could be upping the game of chicken with the PLAN warship signalling it was serious by making those preparations," Patton said.
Hu Bo, director of the Centre for Maritime Strategy Studies at Peking University, described the preparation of the buoys as a "natural response" ahead of a likely accident.
WASHINGTON - A U.S. military patrol has blocked a Russian military convoy from using a main highway in northeast Syria amid growing tensions between the two sides, local reports said.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor that has researchers inside the country, reported on Tuesday that U.S. forces didn't allow Russian military vehicles to use a major road between two Kurdish-held towns in Syria's northeast.
The Russian convoy was attempting to reach a border crossing between Syria and Iraq that is under the control of U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the Observatory added.
After Turkish military and allied Syrian militias launched an offensive against SDF fighters in October 2019, Russia, a staunch supporter of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, stepped in to increase its military presence in northeast Syria following a U.S. decision to withdraw troops from parts of the border area between Syria and Turkey.

Growing Tensions Between U.S. And Russian Forces In Syria
The US special representative for Iran, Brian Hook, has said that the successor to Iran's Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani would suffer the same fate if he followed a similar path of killing Americans.
After Soleimani's killing on Jan. 3, Tehran swiftly appointed Esmail Ghaani as the new head of the Quds Force. He pledged to pursue Soleimani's course.
In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat in Davos, Hook also said the UN Security Council should condemn the September attacks on Saudi oil facilities in Abqaiq and Khurais.
The age of Russian superweapons is upon us -- at least that's what President Vladimir Putin wants us to believe.
And they are cause for concern because the United States' traditional early warning systems might not be able to see those weapons coming.
Hypersonic weapons such as Russia's 3M22 Zircon fly so fast and low -- at speeds of up to Mach 6 and at a low atmospheric-ballistic trajectory -- that they can penetrate traditional anti-missile defense systems.
The missile flies with an advanced fuel that the Russians say gives it a range of up to 1,000 kilometers. And it's so fast that the air pressure in front of the weapon forms a plasma cloud as it moves, absorbing radio waves and making it practically invisible to active radar systems.
CANADIAN industries have threatened to take action against the European Union, after Brussels was accused of "not respecting" the terms laid out in the £50billion trade deal.
WITH the outbreak of coronavirus now spreading beyond China's borders, with 830 cases confirmed world-wide and 25 deaths so far, it has emerged Wuhan, where the disease was first spotted, is the site of a biosafety lab housing some of the world's most deadly illnesses.
MORE than 2000 potential carriers of the killer Chinese virus are already in the UK and doctors have been advised to lock patients in a room if they discover symptoms.

A landing page is a homepage, right? I mean, it has all the links to all the places on your website, right? Because people are certain to take the time to search through your website until they find what they’re looking for. If these are your assumptions, you’ve come to the right place. Why? Because you’ve assumed wrong. Once on a homepage, 86% of internet users want to see a company’s products or services immediately. In essence, they’ll bounce if they can’t find what they’re looking for when landing. What’s the difference then between a homepage and a landing page?

KOLKATA: Any steps taken by the government towards a financial bailout of Vodafone Idea (VIL) ultimately won't be enough for the struggling telco to compete effectively against Reliance Jio Infocomm and Bharti Airtel, analysts said."The government will find it too expensive to provide a large enough fix needed to prop up VIL for anything other than the medium-term," Deutsche Bank said in a note seen by ET.The German investment bank said, "The Aditya Birla Group (one of VIL's co-promoters) may even consider getting Vodafone Idea to go into bankruptcy on the chance that it may be able to repurchase the rump of the business."It added that this was an "ambiguous area" with the government wanting to avoid promoters buying assets of their failed companies for fear of regulatory arbitrage, even though when it comes to self-declared bankruptcies, the rules are not entirely clear.Vodafone Idea faces over Rs 53,000 crore in AGR-related statutory dues, and its chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla has said the company will shut down without government or judicial relief.According to Deutsche Bank, Vodafone Idea needs more large price hikes, considerable government relief and its market share holding fairly firm to survive. "But we believe it will get two out of these three (requirements) at best, which won't be enough."Under the circumstances, analysts see telecom market leader Jio pushing for market share gains and aggressive customer additions in a sector rapidly evolving into a private duopoly over the next 9-12 months.CLSA estimates Jio's operating income doubling in two years to Rs 52,400 crore by when its mobile user base is also slated to swell to 500 million, propelled by a mix of tariff hikes and accelerated market share gains."Jio's Ebitda to double by FY22 to Rs 52,400 crore ($7.4 billion) and pegs the enterprise value of its mobile business at $66 billion," the brokerage said.Jio added 14.8 million customers in the fiscal third quarter, and its user base stood at 370 million at the end of December.Analysts expect Jio's 35% tariff hike last month to start driving revenue growth for the telco by the fiscal fourth quarter, and its average revenue per user (APRU) — a key performance metric — is estimated to jump over 31% to ?168 by FY22 from Rs 128 reported in the October-December period, FY20.CLSA estimates 60% of Jio's revenue growth to be led by the tariff hikes and the balance 40% by market share gains.Morgan Stanley said Jio, with its low 4G network utilisation and large spectrum footprint, can also potentially on board a large base of subscribers if the telecom industry consolidates into a two-player market.Deutsche Bank said Jio should also be able to increase its spectrum share afford-ably in the upcoming 5G auction, especially with at least one of its competitors (read: VIL) in financial peril".
MUMBAI: Life Insurance Corp, India's biggest buyer of debt, has seen Rs 11,000 crore of bonds slide into defaults in the first half of FY20, with rating companies downgrading to junk the papers of DHFL, Reliance Capital, Reliance Home Finance, and Sintex Industries. LIC made provisions for its investments of Rs 6,500 crore in DHFL across life and pension funds, and these papers were downgraded to default in June. Its exposure of Rs 4,000 crore to Reliance Capital turned NPA for lenders in September 2019.LIC had in the past taken exposure to many companies facing insolvency proceedings. These included Alok Industries, ABG Shipyard, Amtek Auto, Mandhana Industries, Jaypee Infratech, Jyoti Structures, Rainbow Papers, and Orchid Pharma. The total debt book of LIC was Rs 4 lakh crore: With assets under management of Rs 30 lakh crore, LIC is the largest domestic institutional investor.Overall, Rs 22,553 crore worth of assets were downgraded during the September quarter, of which Rs 4,300 crore was downgraded to sub investment grade or junk by rating companies. These included investments in Reliance Capital from pension and life funds. 73569973 LIC's gross NPAs reduced to 6.15 per cent in FY19 from 6.23 per cent. It made higher provisions for bad loans, leading to a decline in its net NPAs – to 0.27 per cent from 1.82 per cent. NPA as on March 31, 2019 was Rs 24,777 crore. It has exposure of Rs 3,250 crore to Indiabulls Housing Finance, which was downgraded from AAA to AA+, exposure of Rs 1,500 crore to Piramal Capital and Housing, which was downgraded from AA+ to AA, and around Rs 6,000 crore in Yes Bank.LIC has raised provision toward doubtful assets by 25 per cent to Rs 25,000 crore for the last financial year after reviewing the quality and performance of investments in real estate, loans and other assets. Over the last few years, LIC has seen its exposures to stressed companies, such as ABG Shipyard, Amtek Auto and Jaypee Group, turn bad. These borrowers were among the first to be referred to the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code.
NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned afresh Tony Fernandes and other top executives of Malaysia-based AirAsia Bhd as well as R Venkataramanan, former director of AirAsia India, over allegations of money laundering. The agency has asked Venkataramanan to appear before it on February 10, said people aware of the matter.Venkataramanan was the Tata Sons nominee on the board of AirAsia India, a joint venture between the two entities. He stepped down as managing trustee of the Tata Trusts in March last year and later exited AirAsia India. Venkataramanan didn't respond to queries.AirAsia boss Fernandes has been summoned on February 5 while former deputy group CEO Tharumalingam Kanagalingam, also known as Bo Lingam, has been asked to appear on February 3, after both failed to do so on January 20, said people with direct knowledge of the matter. They couldn't be immediately reached for comment. The airline has previously denied any wrongdoing. 73569696 Directors InvolvedFernandes and other top managers of AirAsia are being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation on charges of criminal conspiracy under the Prevention of Corruption Act. CBI registered a first information report (FIR) in May 2018 after the ED filed the money laundering case. The CBI said in the FIR that the directors were involved in wrongdoing. "The shareholders and Indian partners at the joint venture, including the board members, were not only aware of these intentions but also consciously violated the then FIPB (Foreign Investment Promotion Board) norms," the FIR said. The role of some bureaucrats has also come under the CBI's scanner. "Source information" meetings with government servants were arranged by lobbyists hired by Fernandes and kickbacks running into crores of rupees were paid, according to the FIR. The CBI alleges that a conspiracy was hatched to get the so-called 5/20 rule amended during the second term (2009-14) of the Congressled United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. At the time, Indian carriers could only fly overseas if they had been operating for five years and had 20 planes. The 5/20 rule was relaxed in June 2016, scrapping the five-year requirement.AirAsia applied to the FIPB in February 2013 and received formal approval in April 2013, despite irregularities in its application, the CBI has said. The FIPB ignored the violation of foreign direct investment (FDI) norms, as AirAsia India was indirectly controlled and operated by the Malaysia-based AirAsia. The rules stipulate that domestic carriers have to be controlled locally. The said arrangement (company structure) was formalised on April 17, 2013, indirectly making AirAsia India a "de-facto subsidiary rather than a joint venture," CBI said. The company denied the accusations in a 2018 press statement."AirAsia India Ltd (AAIL) refutes any wrongdoing and is cooperating with all regulators and agencies to present the correct facts," it said. In its FIR, the CBI has also named Rajender Dubey, director of Singapore-based HNR Trading Pvt Ltd; Sunil Kapur, chairman, Total Food Services, Mumbai; Deepak Talwar, principal and founder, DTA Consulting, New Delhi; and HNR Trading as alleged lobbyists who used their influence to try and get the 5/20 rule relaxed before the general elections of 2014.
NEW DELHI: The Niti Aayog has sought Cabinet approval for a proposal to build up to 10 large factories that would get subsidies to produce lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles. Once it gets the nod, the Aayog will invite bids for setting up these gigafactories, with a total capacity of 50 Gigawatt hours (GWh), over 10 years, a senior government official told ET.The projects would cost as much as $5 billion (Rs 35,500 crore). The move is part of an effort to push use of EVs, for which high battery cost is a big hurdle. The batteries, currently being imported, account for more than half the cost of an EV and local manufacturing could help bring this down. The finance ministry has already okayed the Aayog's proposal to offer Rs 700 crore a year in subsidies to battery makers, starting 2022.73569432 Policy for GigafactoriesThe official told ET that the Aayog, which moved a Cabinet note on the proposal, had also put in place a policy framework for setting up gigafactories after extensive stakeholder consultation. This proposed policy framework would soon be taken to the Cabinet."Faster rollout of battery manufacturing in India is a prerequisite for successful electric vehicle mission," the official said.According to the official, the proposed battery policy is output-based rather than input-based, with subsidy linked to the capacity creation committed and the level of indigenisation. Thus, companies will be eligible for subsidy from the government if they achieve 60% indigenisation by 2025, when they are expected to attain full-scale production. As per the proposal, battery manufacturers will be allowed to avail of entire depreciation in one go. Besides, duty-free imports of lithium, iron and cobalt will be allowed to power the advanced cell chemistry in place of the traditional lead batteries.Any new technology that evolves over the next 10 years will also be eligible for subsidy. The government is eyeing a minimum factory size of 5 GWh, which means a maximum of 10 players would be allowed through a competitive bidding process to set up shop in India. Typically, a gigafactory with 10 GWh capacity requires an investment of $1 billion.
NEW DELHI: Ikea, the world's largest furniture retailer that opened its first India store in Hyderabad in 2018, may now foray into developing shopping malls along with flagship outlets, two people familiar with the development said.Ikea is exploring possibilities of building shopping malls and entertainment facilities next to some of its upcoming standalone stores, or developing multi-storey shopping centres with Ikea as an anchor store, depending on land availability, they said. The company will lease out mall space to other brands and retailers.Ikea's sister concern Ingka Centres (formerly Ikea Centres) owns 44 such 'retail parks' in Europe, China and Russia.73570329 "Ingka Centres is interested in developing similar retail parks here," one of the persons said. "This (India) is a market they want to explore as India has a huge potential for retail."India's $792-billion retail market is expected to grow 12-14% over the next three years to more than $1 trillion, according to Care Ratings. The other person said Ingka Centres would explore possibility of developing its first retail park in Gurgaon where the Swedish furniture and home products retailer purchased a 10-acre land for Rs 842 crore in 2018, in the single-largest property auction for the Haryana Urban Development Authority. Ikea has yet to start construction at the site. "Ikea's plan is to develop it into a retail destination with its store as anchor and other retailers and restaurants to give a composite retail experience," the person said.Ikea did not respond to questions regarding its possible foray into mall development in India.
NEW DELHI: State-run NBCC (India) is keen on getting the government's stress fund to complete three of the 16 projects of the Amrapali Group. The fund is being offered by the central government for stalled housing projects. The builder has identified three projects that are net worth positive and has written to the court receiver for funding. The cost for completion of these projects is about Rs 600 crore.About a year ago, the Supreme Court had asked NBCC to complete 16 projects of the Amrapali Group. It has completed work on two of those, which will be handover soon to the court receiver. It has issued tender for completion of work on seven stuck projects."A meeting was held with the court receiver on January 9, where possibility of getting stress fund for net worth positive project was discussed. We identified Platinum & Titanium, Heart Beat-1 and Heart Beat-2 as net worth positive and will call the tender of these projects," said an official aware of the development.NBCC has shared the details with the court receiver and has also said that Platinum and Titanium require urgent rectification work. It has also shared the funding pattern and cash flow. The projects that the Supreme Court has asked NBCC to take over at Noida and Greater Noida are expected to cost Rs 8,361 crore to complete.
SBI Cards & Payments Services is trading at a Rs 200-250 premium in the grey market ahead of its proposed share sale in February, said three dealers involved in such trades. The company is likely to be valued at Rs 57,000-60,000 crore in the initial public offering."There is lot of demand for unlisted shares as the theme is driven by the Indian consumption story," said Abhenav Khettry, the managing director of financial services advisory firm Vyana Wealth. "Investors realise that it's a huge business opportunity considering that SBI Cards' play is in a niche segment."SBI Cards is billed as a proxy to high-margin credit card business. It is the only standalone company focused entirely on cards business — other issuers like HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank have their cards operations as part of the banking business. The exclusive focus on the unsecured cards business, however, increases the risk for SBI Cards from defaults by individuals.Typically, grey market trades happen just ahead of the launch of a share sale. The IPO is aimed at raising Rs 9,500 crore and traders expect the price band around Rs 600-700 apiece. Those who bet on the premium in the grey market expect the price to gain Rs 200-250 once the shares start trading in the secondary market. "SBI Cards would be a logical bet as there are no competitors per se. This in turn is driving the premium up," said a trader. There is high demand from wealthy individuals, local brokerages in these trades. 73570353 "There are some trades happening at a premium of Rs 230 and Rs 240, which are popular levels for SBI Cards," the person said. But dealers said the scrip was over-priced and was trading 12 times its price-to-book.SBI's plastic cards arm is estimated to have a base of 9.5 million, making it the second largest card issuer after HDFC Bank, as per an ET report in November. India's credit card spending grew at an annualised rate of 35.6 per cent in the last three years, while credit card outstanding rose 25.6 per cent, data from the RBI show.SBI Cards commands a relatively strong return on assets of 5.5 per cent, driven by better fees and low credit costs. The industry average for the cards business stands at 3.5 per cent. SBI Cards has not seen its return on equity (RoE) dip below 25 per cent in the past 6-7 years and has averaged around 30 per cent RoE during that time.As per a report published by brokerage Emkay Global, India's credit card market has more than doubled over the past four years in terms of number of cards to 53 million, but remains significantly underpenetrated at four cards per 100 people. The statistics in other developing or developed economies is 30.

MUMBAI: US-headquartered internet domain registrar and web hosting company, GoDaddy may look to open data centres in India to be closer to its local customers. The company's data centers are currently located in Singapore. "We don't have a stated plan yet but we may look at opening an Indian data centre to be closer to customers in India. Some customers prefer local presence," said Nikhil Arora, managing director, GoDaddy India. The focus on a local data centre stems from the fact that roughly 50% of the company's new customers are coming from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. "We are focusing on becoming the trusted partners of influencers and professionals like web designers. A web designer has an average of 20 to 30 customers," Arora said. The company currently has over 40% market share in the .IN domain according to the National Internet Exchange of India and over a million customers in the country. In the past, cyber crime police in a few states in India have expressed concerns over delays in receiving information from large internet companies such as GoDaddy on individuals and companies involved in cyber crime. Speaking on the company's stand on data protection, Arora said, "Data protection, security and privacy are important issues for us, and we've always taken a serious approach to protective measures, which will continue to be at the core of our decision making today and in the future."
Artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies such as virtual personal assistants and chatbots will replace almost 69% of the manager's workload by 2024, according to research and advisory company Gartner."The role of manager will see a complete overhaul in the next four years," said Helen Poitevin, research vice-president at Gartner. "Currently, managers often need to spend time filling in forms, updating information and approving workflows. By using AI to automate these tasks, they can spend less time managing transactions and can invest more time on learning, performance management and goal setting."AI and emerging technologies will change the role of the manager and will allow employees to extend their degree of responsibility and influence, without taking on management tasks, according to a report entitled "Predicts 2020: AI and the Future of Work". Application leaders focused on innovation and AI are now accountable for improving worker experience, developing worker skills and building organizational competency in responsible use of AI."Application leaders will need to support a gradual transition to increased automation of management tasks as this functionality becomes increasingly available across more enterprise applications," said Poitevin.Nearly 75% of heads of recruiting reported that talent shortages will have a major effect on their organizations, according to Gartner estimates. Enterprises have been experiencing critical talent shortage for several years. Organizations need to consider people with disabilities, an untapped pool of critically skilled talent. Today, AI and other emerging technologies are making work more accessible for employees with disabilities.Gartner estimates that organizations actively employing people with disabilities have 89% higher retention rates, a 72% increase in employee productivity and a 29% increase in profitability.By 2023, the number of people with disabilities employed will triple, due to AI and emerging technologies reducing barriers to access."Some organizations are successfully using AI to make work accessible for those with special needs," said Poitevin. "Restaurants are piloting AI robotics technology that enables paralyzed employees to control robotic waiters remotely. With technologies like braille-readers and virtual reality, organizations are more open to opportunities to employ a diverse workforce."By 2022, organizations that do not employ people with disabilities will fall behind their competitors, said the estimates.
Over time, it's natural for most refrigerators to build up a slightly unpleasant aroma. While the smell can be off-putting, it's not doing any harm to your food itself. If you'd like to remove lingering food smells before they permanently soak into the interior of your fridge, start by throwing away any bad food. You can also place a deodorizer or 2—like coffee grounds and activated charcoal—on an upper shelf. To prevent bad smells in the first place, throw out food as soon as it begins to spoil, and always store food in airtight containers.
Unplug your refrigerator from the wall before you begin cleaning it. Follow the power cable from the back of your fridge to the outlet where it's plugged in, and pull the plug.[1] If you leave the fridge plugged in as you clean, you'll find that your next electric bill is extremely high!
Some newer models of refrigerator have an "off" button. If yours does, you can just turn the fridge off rather than unplugging it.
Remove all of the food items from your fridge. Go through every storage area within your fridge—shelves, drawers, and door bins—and pull out all of the organic food items. Look closely at the food and, if anything is spoiled, rotten, or emitting a bad smell, throw it into the garbage. In most cases, bad smells in your fridge are caused by spoiled foods.[2]
Try to start and finish the entire job within 4 hours. The USDA warns that food left out for over 4 hours may spoil or become unsafe to eat.
Place any food you choose to keep in a cooler while you work. Depending on the amount of food you store in your fridge—and how long it takes to scrub out—unspoiled food could be sitting out for quite some time. To avoid ruining good food, place it in a cooler while you're cleaning the fridge. If you keep the lid shut, the refrigerated food will keep itself cold.[3]
Add ice to the cooler if it will be out for over 60 minutes. This will keep the food well preserved.
Scrub the fridge walls and floor with a mixture of baking soda and water. Dissolve 1 cup (128 g) of baking soda into of warm water. Dip an ordinary dish sponge into this mixture, lightly wring it out, and scrub out the interior of the fridge. Wash the fridge walls, ceiling, and bottom. Take the time to soak, scrub, and remove any lingering food stains.[4]
If the mixture loses its potency or the sink fills up with food bits, throw out the batch and mix up a new one.
Take out and wash all shelves, bins, and other removable parts. Remove all of the components of the fridge that aren't attached to the walls, including the vegetable drawers and the shelves themselves. Wash and rinse all of the parts with your baking soda mixture before thoroughly drying and reinstalling them.[5]
Also be sure to look underneath the vegetable bins. Sometimes bits of food and old water can accumulate beneath the bins and create a foul smell.
Clean any food scraps from the drip pan under the fridge. The drip pan is a thin plastic tray that clips into place beneath the bottom of the refrigerator. Remove the drip pan from beneath the doors, carefully pull it out and dump the contents. Then, dip your sponge into the baking soda mixture and scrub any food stains off of the drip pan before reinstalling it.[6]
Not all refrigerator models have a drip pan. If yours doesn't, you can skip this step. Do take the time to scrub the bottom of the fridge, though.
Keep an open container of baking soda on a back shelf. Baking soda has no smell itself, but it's great at absorbing and neutralizing other aromas. To get rid of odors in your fridge, open up a box of baking soda and store it on the back of the top shelf. When you notice a few unpleasant smells starting to emerge, toss that baking soda and replace it with another box.[7]
If you fridge smells especially bad and you'd like to absorb a great deal of odor at once, pour out a full box of baking soda across a baking sheet and place leave it in the refrigerator overnight. Then discard the baking soda.
Remove odors from your freezer with boiled apple cider vinegar. Combine apple cider vinegar and water at a 1:3 ratio. Pour the mixture into a saucepan and bring it to a boil on the stovetop. As soon as the mixture begins boiling, remove it from the heat and pour it into a heat-resistant glass or metal bowl. Place the bowl in your freezer, shut the door, and leave it for 4–6 hours. This should absorb foul smells from your freezer.[8]
After the 4–6 hours have passed, remove the vinegar mixture and pour it down the drain.
Once it's been boiled, apple cider vinegar absorbs unpleasant odors and replaces them with a pleasant fruity smell.
Cover 2–3 shelves with coffee grounds if you have plenty of time. Coffee grounds can successfully absorb unpleasant odors, but they take a long time to work. If you can live without your fridge for a few days, try this method. Spread dry, fresh coffee grounds across 2–3 baking sheets. Place each sheet on a different level of your refrigerator. The smells should leave within 3–4 days.[9]
During this time, you'll need to keep your food in a second refrigerator or in a few ice-filled coolers.
Once the 3–4 days have passed, dispose of the coffee grounds, wash the baking sheets, and put your food back into the fridge.
Set 2–3 baking sheets of unscented cat litter on different shelves. Coffee grounds can leave behind a slight coffee aroma in your fridge. If you'd like to absorb foul smells without leaving your fridge smelling like coffee, opt for cat litter instead. Spread a layer of clean litter in 2–3 shallow baking sheets and place the sheets on different shelves in your fridge. Leave the fridge running and empty with only the litter inside for 2–3 days to absorb any lingering smells.[10]
Purchase unscented cat litter at any pet store or large supermarket. Some home-improvement stores will also stock cat litter.
Let activated charcoal absorb bad odors if other methods fail. Fill 3–4 small cloth bags with about 1 cup (130 g) of loose activated charcoal. Then place the charcoal-filled bags on different shelves in your fridge.[11] Set the refrigerator temperature to low and leave the door closed as much as possible for several days. The smells in question should go away within 3–4 days.
Activated charcoal can be purchased from pet stores or drugstores.
Unlike with the coffee grounds method, you can use activated charcoal while your food is still in the fridge.
Toss expired food weekly to prevent bad smells from accumulating. To prevent odors in the future, make a point to look in your fridge once a week or so and remove expired food. This preventative measure will keep foul smells from building up in the first place. It's much easier to prevent bad odors in your fridge than it is to eliminate them.
Try looking right before you take out the trash. That way, you'll be able to get the spoiled, smelly food out of your home as soon as you've noticed it.
Store fresh foods where they're visible so they don't spoil unnoticed. Fresh items like fruits and vegetables can easily go bad without your noticing if they're tucked away in a seldom-opened veggie drawer or the back of a bottom shelf. Prevent this by storing them in a location where you'll be able to see them daily. Then, if you notice any fresh foods starting to look a little past their prime, dispose of them immediately.[12]
For example, keep meat at the front of the top shelf, and keep fruits and veggies on a lower shelf where they're easily visible.
Set the temperature in your fridge between . When kept in this temperature range, food will keep without going bad. Since it's only when food spoils that it begins to smell, you'll keep your fridge smelling fresh and clean as long as the temperature remains in this range. If the temperature in your fridge rises above , bacteria will begin to grow and the food will begin to smell.[13]
Were you to set the fridge temperature to or lower, of course, the food would freeze.
Keep leftover food in airtight containers to prevent it from smelling. If you leave food uncovered in your fridge or leave it in, for example, a cardboard takeout box, it'll go bad quickly. The sooner food goes bad, the sooner it'll begin to stink up your fridge. By keeping leftovers in a sealed airtight container, you'll help them last longer and prevent foul smells.[14]
As an extra measure to keep food from spoiling in your fridge, label and date leftovers when you store them. Tear off a piece of masking tape and stick it on top of the airtight container and write, for example, "February 14; chicken parmesan."
Regardless of which method(s) you choose, don't put the food back into your refrigerator until the stench has cleared.
After cleaning the fridge, also clean the condiment bottles and containers of food before putting them back in. Sometimes bad smells can cling to them.
If you have to leave your fridge off or unplugged for an extended period of time—e.g., if you're taking a multiple-month vacation—clean it, take all the food out, and leave the door propped open since a warm, closed fridge can start to smell bad.
Do not use charcoal briquettes in the place of activated charcoal. The 2 forms of charcoal cannot be substituted for one another.
Never clean a cold glass shelf with hot water. Either allow it to come to room temperature or use lukewarm water. A sudden temperature change can shatter the glass.
Avoid using abrasive cleaning items (e.g., steel wool) to scrub refrigerator surfaces clean. These have the potential for scratching the refrigerator surfaces.
Your sinuses and ears are connected by way of your Eustachian tubes. So, if they get clogged or inflamed, then you can feel awful pressure and congestion in both of them at the same time. Fortunately, there are things you can do to try to clear your sinuses and ears. You can work to decongest your sinuses by drinking plenty of water, using medication, and moisturizing your sinuses. You can also help them drain on their own by avoiding temperature fluctuations, pressure changes, and substances like caffeine and alcohol, which can make your symptoms worse. If your symptoms get worse or don't improve after more than a week, see your doctor.
Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to thin mucus. Staying hydrated will allow your body to be better able to expel any mucus that's built up in your sinuses and ears. To help clear them, drink an glass of water every hour or so to keep your membranes lubricated and any mucus thin.[1]
Thin mucus will drain from your sinuses and ears easier.
For the best results, warm up the water in a kettle and drink it while it's comfortably hot. To enhance the flavor and add extra decongesting power, mix in a little ginger, honey, and cinnamon.
Place a warm, damp cloth on your face to loosen any mucus. Soak a washcloth in warm water and wring it out. Then, lay it over your face and nose and leave it on for 5 minutes, or until the cloth gets cold. The heat will warm your sinuses and loosen the mucus, making it easier to clear them.[2]
Make sure the water is hot, but not so hot that you can burn your skin.
You can repeat this process as many times as you want to help relieve sinus pressure.
You can also loosen your mucus by steaming your sinuses. Boil some water in a pot and set it on a level surface, then position yourself over the pot and drape a towel over your head. Carefully lift the lid of the pot to let the steam out under the towel so you can breathe it in.
Blow your nose to clear out your sinuses and relieve pressure. If the mucus in your sinuses is thin enough to be expelled, blow your nose gently into a napkin or tissue paper. Removing the mucus from your sinuses will relieve pressure and congestion in your sinuses and your ears.[3]
For difficult congestion, block 1 nostril and blow through the other so you can clear them.
Take an oral decongestant to drain and clear your sinuses. Over-the-counter decongestants can both thin out any mucus present in your sinuses as well as lubricate your membranes so it's easier for the mucus to drain. Follow the recommended dose listed on the packaging of the decongestant.[4]
You can find decongestants at your local pharmacy.
For serious congestion, call your doctor and ask if they can prescribe a prescription-strength decongestant.
Don't take a decongestant for longer than 3 days unless your doctor advises you otherwise. Using a decongestant for too long can end up making your congestion worse.
Be cautious about using oral decongestants if you have high blood pressure, closed angle glaucoma, or an overactive thyroid gland. If you have one of these conditions, stick to using Mucinex unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Try a mucolytic medication to loosen your mucus. Mucolytics, such as Mucinex, work by loosening up the fluid in your nose and ears, making it easier to drain. If you're an adult, you can take 600 mg of Mucinex with a full glass of water twice a day.
Always talk to a pediatrician before giving mucolytics to a child.
Use a nasal saline spray to help decongest your sinuses. A saline spray will moisten and lubricate your sinuses, which will help you clear them out. Clearing your sinuses will reduce pressure in your ears and help any fluid trapped there drain more easily.[5]
Use 1-2 drops of saline nasal spray in each nostril every 2 hours. You can use a saline spray as long as you like, and you can also use it preventatively.
If saline spray isn't enough to relieve your congestion, you can use it in combination with a spray containing decongestant medication, such as Afrin. You may not need any additional oral decongestants.
If you're using a medicated spray, read the packaging to make sure you can use it if you've already taken decongestant medication. Use the decongestant spray as directed on the packaging and don't use it for more than 3 consecutive days so your sinuses can start to regulate themselves after you clear them.
You can find nasal sprays, such as saline sprays or medicated sprays, at your local pharmacy.
Wash out your sinuses with a neti pot. A neti pot is a small, spouted pot that you can use to rinse your nasal passages with saline solution. To use the pot, stand over your sink and tilt your head at a 45° angle. Then, pour half of the saline into your upper nostril while breathing through your mouth. Repeat the process with the other nostril, then gently blow your nose to clear out the water and mucus.[6]
You may find it more comfortable to use warm water with the neti pot. The water should be around body temperature ().
Put a medicated rub on your chest to soothe your sinuses. A medicated chest rub, such as Vicks VapoRub, can soothe your irritated nasal passages and help you breathe a little easier. Use the rub according to the directions on the package.
Don't use VapoRub or any other medication containing camphor on a child under 2 years old. To use the rub safely on children over 2 and adults, only apply it to the chest and neck, and never to the face or around the nostrils.[7]
Take a hot shower to flush your sinuses and ears. The steam and heat from the shower will work to loosen mucus in your sinuses and will help drain your ears to clear them. You'll also feel much better after cleaning yourself and expelling any loose mucus and fluid.[8]
Use hot water to create more steam in the shower, but don't make it so hot that you burn yourself.
Place a humidifier in the room with you to keep from drying out. If your sinuses and ears are blocked or clogged up, dry air can make them even worse by drying out the mucus so it's hard. Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air, which will help to keep your sinuses and ears lubricated and moist to help clear out any gunk in them.[9]
Place the humidifier somewhere higher up like on a dresser or on top of a shelf so it can evenly distribute moisture throughout the room.
Avoid major temperature changes. Going out into super hot or really cold weather can make your sinuses and ears worse and more difficult to clear. If you've got clogged sinuses and ears, stay in a consistent environment, such as your home or office, so they're better able to clear themselves out. If you do have to go outside, make sure you're dressed comfortably for the weather so you don't overheat or catch a cold chill.[10]
Don't go for a run outside if it's too hot to try to sweat it out. The fluctuation can make your symptoms worse.
Avoid cold-weather activities, which can harden any fluids in your sinuses and ears.
Don't drink coffee or alcohol if your sinuses and ears are clogged. Caffeine and alcohol both affect your body's circulation. Changes in your blood flow and heart rate can put added strain on your blood vessels, which can affect both your sinuses and your ears.[11]
Avoid your morning cup of joe until your sinuses and ears are clear.
Drinking alcohol may make you feel slightly better in the short term, but your sinus and ear pressure will only get worse if you add the effects of a hangover on top of them.
Limit your dairy intake if it makes your symptoms worse. Dairy products, such as milk, yogurt, and cheese, can cause your phlegm to feel thicker and more irritating. If you have a dairy allergy, it can also trigger symptoms such as a runny or stuffy nose and post-nasal drip. Avoid drinking milk or eating dairy if it seems to aggravate your congested sinuses and ears.[12]
Try dairy alternatives, such as soy or almond milk, if dairy makes you congested.
Eat chicken soup or bone broth to clear your congestion. Chicken soup won't cure a cold, but it really can help you feel better. Warm chicken soup or bone broth not only helps clear congestion, but can also reduce inflammation and soothe irritation in your nasal passages. Try a little soothing chicken soup, chicken broth, or bone broth to reduce your congestion.[13]
Ingredients like garlic, onions, and ginger can both enhance the flavor of the soup and give your immune system a boost.
Stand up slowly to avoid getting dizzy. Pressure in your sinuses and inner ear can affect your balance and coordination. If you've got congestion or pressure in your sinuses and ears, don't stand up too fast or you could feel dizzy and potentially fall or faint.[14]
Move in increments if you're getting out of a bed or chair. Sit upright, use your hands to help lift yourself, and then rise slowly so you don't get dizzy.
Keep your head held upright to help with drainage. Bending forward or holding your head down can make pressure in your sinuses and ears worse. It can also inhibit the natural drainage that your sinuses and ears do on their own. To help clear your sinuses and ears faster, sit upright as best as you can.[15]
While being productive can be challenging, there are many ways to make sure that you get a lot of things done after the school day ends. Treat your body right by eating healthy snacks and getting enough sleep. Make a to-do list and stick to any schedules that you set for yourself; if you're consistent and make an honest effort to get things done, you'll discover that being productive when school gets out can be a breeze!
Set rewards for yourself. Whether it's a video game, 30 minutes on social media, or a candy bar, find something that you really want to do. Make an agreement with your family that you will only receive the reward if you complete a certain number of tasks after school every day. This way, you'll have a reason to get things done as soon as you get home.[1]
You don't necessarily need to arrange rewards with your family in order to motivate yourself to be productive. If you can be disciplined, you can be in charge of rewarding yourself after you've gotten a few things done.
Ask your parents if there are any incentives that they can think of to give you for being consistently productive after school.
Perform some simple stretches to activate your body. Stretching will get the blood flowing and make it easier to get started on your first task. Stand up and stretch your back by tilting backwards with your hands on your hips. Use your toes to lift your ankles off of the floor to stretch your hamstrings. Then, keep your legs straight as you bend over to touch your toes. Stretch your upper body by pulling back on your palms as they point away from you. Bend your elbow behind your upper back and push on your triceps to stretch your arms.[2]
Jumping jacks, yoga, and jump rope are all good physical activities that can be used instead of stretching.
Stretch for at least 5 minutes before moving on to your next task. This will help get your body in the habit of moving before
Eat a healthy snack when you get home. Your body is going to need a little energy after you get home from a long day at school. Have a healthy snack, like an apple or bowl of oatmeal when you get home. Fueling your body will give you an energy boost and make it easier to get started.[3]
Don't sit down for a full meal. Your body will get tired immediately after eating a full meal as it spends energy trying to digest the food.
Announce your plans to be productive to the members of your family. You're more likely to be productive if other people know about your goals to get your work done. Tell your family members that you are actively going to be productive after school every day. This way, you'll know that you need to get to work when you get home in order to avoid letting your parents down.[4]
Write a positive note of encouragement and post it in your home. A simple message like "stay busy!" or "getting stuff done feels good" can be written on a post-it note or piece of paper. Hang the paper up in a visible area in your home to give yourself a visual reminder about maintaining a positive mindset while getting your work done.[5]
Remind yourself why you want to be productive and think about how good it will feel when you're done with your homework and chores. The satisfaction of getting a lot done is a strong motivator when it comes to getting yourself moving.
Make a list of what you want to get done after school. Compose a to-do list before you get home with 3-6 tasks that you want to complete. Arrange it so that your list is ordered from most to least important. As you work, cross things off of your list. This will help you track whether you're meeting your daily productivity goals or not.[6]
Keep your daily to-do lists in the same notebook and bring it with you to school. During lunch or on your way home, review your list from the day before to see what tasks (if any) you need to carry over from the previous day.
Start with the most important task on your list. If your room is already clean, getting your homework done first is a good idea. If your parents are having friends over for dinner and you haven't cleaned up yet, you probably need to pick your things up first. By beginning with the most important issue, you'll ensure that you're motivated enough to complete your first task. The positive momentum from finishing your first task will carry you through your next couple of items on your list.[7]
Schedule blocks of time to work on daily tasks like homework. If you have certain things that you need to complete every single day, like homework or daily chores, schedule a specific time to complete them. Set a timer on your phone or alarm clock to remind you when you need to start a daily task. This will ensure that you never accidentally skip something important, and will help you develop the habit of getting stuff done every day.[8]
Don't schedule something for a time slot when you aren't always home. For example, if you have basketball practice 2 days a week from 3:00-4:30 pm, don't schedule homework time for 3:30 pm.
Do your homework right away when you get home. Starting with your homework is a good way to make sure that you're using your time efficiently. Everything that you learned at school will still be fresh in your mind and it'll be easier to finish it quickly. Homework requires sitting as well, so you can have a healthy snack or glass of water while you work in order to refresh your body.[9]
Clean your room and organize any messy areas. It's easy to leave dirty laundry on the floor and forget about trash in your room. Cleaning your personal space is a good activity to complete after school because it requires almost no brain power to complete. If you want to give your mind a rest when you get home, start by cleaning your room.[10]
Finish any chores that your parents have given you. If your parents give you weekly or daily chores, you may want to get those done after school. If you leave chores for the weekend, you're only eating into your own free time. Once you're in the tempo of getting things done after school, incorporate your weekly chores into your routine.[11]
Set a schedule where you complete certain chores on specific days of the week to avoid having to do them all at once. For example, you can do your laundry on Monday, take out the trash on Wednesday, and do the dishes on Friday.
Listen to music while you're working to stay focused. Listening to music is an excellent way to keep yourself from getting distracted. Build yourself a playlist on your phone or home computer, and throw some music on when you get started. This will prevent boredom from setting in while you're working through the mundane items on your to-do list.[12]
Try to include uplifting and high-tempo tunes in your playlist. If you're listening to slower or softer music, you may find yourself falling asleep or getting tired while you work.
Create multiple playlists filled with different artists and genres of music to prevent yourself from listening to the same thing over and over again.
Ask your family to redirect you if you get off-task. Enlist a family member to keep you accountable if they see you getting distracted. Try to work when they're around so that they can keep an eye on you, and don't get upset if they remind you that you're trying to be productive, since a simple reminder will help you stay focused while you work.[13]
Take a short nap before getting started. It may sound counterintuitive, but a nap may be the best way to be productive after school. A 15-20 minute nap can give your body a quick rest and make it easier to fight through the after-school slump. Be careful not to overdo it though; set an alarm on your phone and stick to strict time limits in order to prevent yourself for sleeping through the evening.[14]
Deactivate notifications on your phone and avoid looking at social media. It's hard to get anything accomplished if you're consistently staring at a screen. Turn the notifications on your apps off, and close any social media programs to avoid the temptation altogether. Consider leaving you phone in a separate room or with someone if you aren't using it for music and don't need it for the task that you're trying to complete.[15]
Consider downloading an app that monitors and limits the amount of time that you spend on social media. Offtime, Moment, and BreakFree are all apps that will cut you off from Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat if you can't help yourself.[16]
If you're leaving it with someone, tell them you don't want them to give you your phone back until they can see you've completed everything.
Whether you'd like to reduce your environmental footprint, reduce expenses, get more exercise, spend less time stuck in traffic, or all of the above, one of the best things to do is to drive less when you can. You can cut back on your driving by using alternative forms of transportation, staying close to home, and making small changes to the way you drive. With these easy changes, you'll be driving less in no time!
Ride a bike to your destination if it's within a reasonable distance. If your trip is less than away, try going by bicycle. You'll get exercise and fresh air, and you'll have a lane all to yourself. You might even get there as fast as you would sitting by traffic in a car.[1]
If you don't own a bike, look into bike-share programs in your community.[2]
Get a rack, backpack, or a trailer if you need to carry things.
If it's been a while since you've been on a bicycle, start by doing short, easy trips to gain confidence before you ride a long distance.
Walk to your destination if it's close enough. If you're traveling less than , enjoy some fresh air and walk to your destination. It's great exercise, and it offers a nice break from other fast-paced activities.[3]
For example, if you live within of your place of work or school, then you could walk there.
Make sure to use sidewalks, crosswalks, and other safe walking areas if you decide to walk to your destination.
Take public transportation 1 or more days per week. Find out what the public transportation options are in your community and take advantage of them. You can use your bus or train time for things you couldn't do while driving. Read a book or magazine, sleep, catch up on your email, plan your day, learn a language, or do a portable craft, such as knitting or crocheting.[4]
You can walk or bike to the bus stop, or drive to a park-and-ride lot
Carpool to work or school to reduce the environmental impact of driving. If you must drive to school or work every day, try taking along a few passengers. This is a great way to help other people cut back on their driving and reduce your impact on the environment. You can share the cost of gas, get some company on your commute, and you may be able to use a high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane to save additional time.[5]
Find out if any of your coworkers or classmates live near you and would be interested in carpooling.
Use apps to connect with neighbors with similar commute patterns.
Check rideshare boards to identify people going your way if you are taking a longer drive or road trip.
Choose destinations that are close to home whenever possible. Reducing the length of your trip to work, school, shopping, and wherever else you need to go is a painless, easy way to cut down on the time you spend in the car. It also makes it easier to use transportation other than driving when you don't have far to go.[6]
Try shopping for your groceries at a local supermarket rather than driving 20 miles to a major shopping center.
You could even bike or walk to school or work if you live close enough.
Do what you can online or by phone to avoid going out. Take advantage of websites where you can order items that you use frequently to cut down on your trips to the store. Comparison shop online rather than hunting all over town, or call merchants to ask about prices and availability before you go.[7]
For example, you could try ordering your groceries online and have them delivered to eliminate a trip to the store.
Pay bills online or by phone rather than paying in person.
Make check deposits using a banking app instead of driving to the bank.
Ask your employer if you can work from home 1 day per week. If you can perform your work remotely, then you might ask your employer about telecommuting. Not all jobs are suited to it, and not all managers and workplaces are willing to consider it, but if you can save on even 1 day's commute per week, it will add up.[8]
Try pointing out the perks of allowing you to work from home for 1 day of the week, such as increased productivity, higher morale, and reducing environmental impact by cutting back on your commute.
Some people even find that they are more productive without all the distractions of a busy office.
Combine errands and trips when you need to drive somewhere. If you need to drive somewhere, do your best to minimize the number of individual trips you need to make. Make a list of the places you need to go and what you need to get before you head out.[9]
Try to avoid driving back and forth across town as well. Stop at places on the way to and from your other destinations. For example, you could visit the post office or doctor while you're in that part of town, or stop by the store on your way home from work or school.
Park in the first space that you find when you arrive at your destination. Instead of circling the parking lot looking for the perfect space, pull into the first available one even if it's far from the entrance. You may reduce your time spent in the car by as much as 10 minutes by not circling for a closer spot, and you will get some extra steps in by parking further from the entrance. Parking further away even counts as part of your daily exercise![10]
If valet parking is an option at a crowded venue, then you might also try this option for parking. You usually have to pay for valet parking, but it might be worth it for the time and energy you could spend looking for a place to park.
Use map and transit applications to plan your trips. Maps and apps can help you to shorten your route and avoid traffic slowdowns. Some map applications can also tell you where the roads are congested so you can avoid getting stuck in traffic. By following the app's suggestions for alternative routes, you can cut back on the amount of time that you will spend behind the wheel.[11]
