When a 26-year-old American missionary set out for a lush island in the Indian Ocean last year, it was with one objective in mind: to convert the uncontacted Sentinelese tribe, who had lived for centuries in isolation. John Chau's mission had ambitions for a great awakening, but what awaited instead was tragedy.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Russian Defence Ministry has posted a video of the maiden flight of a 6-tonne Altius-U drone, capable of being in the air for more than 24 hours.
A 1 minute and 3 second video was posted on the ministry's YouTube channel. The video shows the drone's flight and manoeuvres in the sky, as well as landing.
Altius-U is the final form of this unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), created as a result of the development and testing of a number of prototypes. The flight took place for 32 minutes at an altitude of up to 800 metres in fully automatic mode at one of the test aerodromes. All systems of the complex worked properly, the Ministry of Defence noted.

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that the United States was now in a position to deploy a new land-based cruise missile in Romania and Poland, a scenario he considered a threat that Moscow would need to respond to.
The Pentagon said on Monday it had tested a conventionally-configured cruise missile that hit its target after more than 500 km (310 miles) of flight, its first such test since the demise of a landmark nuclear pact this month.
The test followed the U.S. formally withdrawing from the Cold War-era Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) on Aug. 2 after accusing Moscow of violating it, a charge dismissed by the Kremlin.

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that a deadly blast at a military site in northern Russia earlier this month had taken place during the testing of what he called promising new weapons systems.
Putin said that Moscow could not reveal everything about the blast because of its military nature, but that information exchanges about such accidents should be improved.
"When it comes to activities of a military nature, there are certain restrictions on access to information," Putin told a news conference in Helsinki, standing alongside Finnish President Sauli Niinisto.
He did not reveal which weapons system was being tested at the time of the blast on Aug. 8.
According to Fathom Consulting, a global independent macro research consultancy, it's proprietary China Momentum Indicator 2.0 has slowed to 4.6% in June, the lowest reading since Aug. 2016.
There is also a growing gap between the China Momentum Indicator 2.0 at 4.6% and official GDP data at 6.2%. Might suggest China's economy hasn't yet bottomed, could continue to decline through 2H19 into 1H20.
Gary Cohn, the former chief economic advisor to Donald Trump, has said the slowdown predates the trade war and reflects a strategic decision by China to rebalance the economy.
Fathom notes that China's economy was even slowing before the rebalancing.
WNU editor: The above analysis is what I am hearing from my friends and business contacts in China. The only exception is that my contacts are telling me that the real Chinese GDP is between 2 and 3 percent. But what caught my eye in this post from Zero Hedge is the last paragraph ....
.... And for more bad news, China has said its re-balancing will continue through 2020 and offered a pessimistic view of how Beijing won't sign a trade deal until after the November 2020 election. This would almost guarantee China is allowing its export economy to weaken while stimulating its domestic economy, all in the attempt to trigger a recession in the U.S. to diminish President Trump's probabilities of getting reelected.
Russia ought not to be invited back into the Group of Seven major economies yet, Germany's Angela Merkel and the U.K.'s Boris Johnson said on Wednesday.
Their comments during a joint press conference in Berlin come after U.S. President Donald Trump said earlier this week that he would give it serious consideration if somebody made the motion to return Russia to the group.
Merkel said there had been "certain developments" in the Minsk process and that more progress would create a new situation, referring to Russia's expulsion from the G-8 in 2014 over its annexation of Crimea and support for separatists in eastern Ukraine.
"Today, we haven't made so much progress that I could say the reasons of 2014 have expired," said Merkel. Johnson said he sided with Merkel on the issue, citing Russia's provocations in the U.K. and elsewhere.

Donald Trump's preposterous fixation with buying Greenland, initially treated as a distraction by American media and a joke by the Danish government, became less amusing Tuesday night when the president declared that he would be canceling his planned diplomatic trip to Denmark in retaliation. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had told the White House, that Greenland, an autonomous territory in the Arctic, wasn't Denmark's to sell.
"Sometimes it is hard to believe that what Trump is saying and doing on the world stage is actually happening," said Nicholas Burns, the former U.S. ambassador to NATO. "This is one of those days." Denmark, after all, is a key partner in the North Atlantic alliance, and was among the first countries to pledge military support in Iraq and Afghanistan. More than 40 Danish troops died in Helmand province, fighting alongside American and British soldiers.
"I realize this is yet another bizarre and humorous Trump moment for the late night talk shows here in the U.S.," Burns told me. "But, for the rest of the world, particularly our allies, it is simply shocking how far America has fallen from grace in their eyes."
WNU Editor: Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen picked the fight by saying it was absurd. The proper response was to simply say no. President Trump should not have cancelled the trip. This was one of those moments where you object to another leader's remarks privately. As to former U.S. diplomats like never-Trumper Nicholas Burns saying this is making the U.S. a "laughing stock". My response is no. It does the opposite. You attack the U.S. President or the U.S., expect blow-back from this President.
GENEVA (Reuters) - If Iran's oil exports are cut to zero, international waterways will not have the same security as before, its president said on Wednesday, cautioning Washington against raising pressure on Tehran in an angry confrontation between the longtime foes.
The comment by President Hassan Rouhani coincided with a remark by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif that Tehran might act "unpredictably" in response to "unpredictable" U.S. policies under President Donald Trump.
US Defence Secretary Mark Esper met South Korean Defence Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo on August 9 on one of the stops in Esper's first Asia tour as defence secretary. * Washington is now free to test and deploy the intermediate-range missiles it believes it needs to compete with its most serious challenger * China's growing arsenal sets the scene for the resurgence of nuclear geopolitics
On the surface, the primary reason behind the United States' recent withdrawal from the bilateral Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty was Russia's violation of the terms of the treaty. But, on closer inspection, Washington's main motivation and target is Beijing.
The treaty, signed by President Ronald Reagan and his Soviet counterpart Mikhail Gorbachev in 1987, was aimed at eliminating short- and intermediate-range land-based ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and missile launchers which are armed with nuclear warheads.
President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the treaty after Russia refused to destroy a new intermediate-range missile system that Washington and its Nato allies said violated the pact. But the more important reason behind the US exit is that Washington believes the treaty is unfit for the new geostrategic status quo since it did not apply to China, which maintains, according to a US government report, the world's "largest and most diverse" range of land-based missiles, including the DF-21 and DF-26.

Petroleum and natural gas production in the United States jumped by 16 percent and 12 percent, respectively, in 2018, setting new production records and placing the United States as the world's single largest producer of oil and natural gas, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said on Tuesday.
The U.S. had already surpassed Russia as the world's biggest natural gas producer back in 2011.
Last year, the United States beat Saudi Arabia to become the single largest petroleum producer, the EIA said, noting that "Last year's increase in the United States was one of the largest absolute petroleum and natural gas production increases from a single country in history."
WNU Editor: If I said ten years ago that the U.S. would be the world's largest oil and gas producer in the world, I would have been laughed out of the room. The geopolitical impact of this cannot be underestimated.

Claim that drone strike caused blast near Baghdad follows leaked findings of Iraqi inquiry
An Iranian-backed militia in Iraq has accused the US and Israel of involvement in an alleged drone strike on a munitions warehouse near Baghdad last week, the latest in a series of mystery explosions at similar bases.
The claim came after the findings of an Iraqi government inquiry into the huge blast at the facility of the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) were leaked.
A spokesman for the PMF said it had intelligence that showed the US had brought in four Israeli drones earlier this year to work as part of the US fleet in Iraq and target militia positions in the country.
Indonesian police say they have regained control of West Papua after sending close to 1,000 extra officers to the province, which erupted into destructive turmoil days ago.

Donald Trump on Wednesday accused Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of being 'nasty' when she said his plan to buy Greenland was 'absurd.'
The president told reporters on the South lawn her statement on the matter 'was nasty' during a 35-minute, free wheeling exchange that included his thoughts on gun background checks, Israel, the New York Times, China and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
'I thought that the prime minister's statement that it was absurd - that it was an absurd idea - was nasty. I thought it was an inappropriate statement. All she had to do is say no, we wouldn't be interested,' he said.
The protest at a Hong Kong subway station escalated into a chaotic free-for-all, with masked demonstrators bracing for a confrontation with police.
HONG KONG — A protest at a Hong Kong subway station suddenly escalated into a chaotic free-for-all on Wednesday night, before it ended without a violent police confrontation.

North Korea has miniaturised nuclear warheads and made them small enough to fit on ballistic missiles, Japan believes (pictured, a recent North Korean weapons test)
Upcoming review out of Tokyo will reportedly say missile programme poses 'serious and imminent threat'
Japan's government will reportedly state that North Korea is capable of miniaturising nuclear warheads in a forthcoming defence report, it has emerged.
Tokyo will upgrade its estimate of the regime's nuclear capability, having said last year only that the technical feat was a possibility, the conservative Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper said on Wednesday, without citing sources.
The defence report will maintain Japan's contention that North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes pose a "serious and imminent threat" to its security after recent meetings between Donald Trump and the North's leader, Kim Jong-un, failed to make progress on denuclearisation.
The report is expected to receive cabinet approval in mid-September, the Yomiuri said.
MIYAKO, Japan — A high-stakes "game of chicken" is playing out in the East China Sea, as Beijing pokes and provokes Tokyo with an intensifying campaign of aerial and maritime encroachments designed to challenge Japan's control of disputed islands.
Every day, around the clock, Japan scrambles fighter jets and dispatches coast guard vessels to counter some new Chinese provocation and ward off the intruding boats and planes. It is also building a "wall" of defensive installations, including missile bases, along the chain of subtropical, touristed islands that make up the archipelago's southwestern arc.
"China wants to change the status quo, but it does not want a military confrontation," said Michael Bosack, a special adviser at the Yokosuka Council on Asia-Pacific Studies in Japan. "The problem here is that miscalculation may lead to confrontation and/or escalation."
The contest has prompted a shift in Japan's defense strategy. Over the past few years, the country has significantly expanded its air force and coast guard bases centered on the southwestern island of Okinawa, which already hosts tens of thousands of U.S. troops and the largest U.S. air base in the Asia-Pacific.
WNU Editor: It is obvious from the graph above that in 2011 China made the decision to test Japan's territorial claims, and they have not stopped since then.

Fearing they could be overwhelmed with visitors, officials in the remote Nevada county that's home to the Area 51 military base have drafted an emergency declaration ahead of next month's planned 'Storm Area 51' event.
Lincoln County is home to the once top-secret U.S. Air Force test area known in popular lore as a site for government studies of outer space aliens, and more than two million Facebook users have indicated they will descend upon the base on September 20
Officials predict 40,000 people might show up, but that's still enough to stoke concern, as Lincoln County only has around 5,200 residents.

The drone was shot down late on Tuesday in Yemen's Dhamar governate, southeast of the Houthi-controlled capital Sanaa, officials told Reuters, which first reported the news.
A Houthi military spokesman was quoted earlier by the group's Al-Masirah TV as saying that air defenses had brought down a U.S. drone.
An Australian appeals court on Wednesday upheld the conviction of Cardinal George Pell, who was found guilty earlier this year of molesting two 13-year-old choir boys in the 1990s. And yet, Pell still retains his title in the Catholic Church.
The Vatican said it is waiting for Pell to make his final appeal to the High Court, Australia’s supreme court, before launching its own investigation. It noted that Pell has always maintained his innocence. One abuse survivors’ group says the decision to hold off on discipline is “cowardly” and shows the Church hasn’t made it nearly far enough on responding to sexual abuse.
Pell, Pope Francis’ former finance minister, is the highest-ranking church official to ever be convicted of child sexual abuse. He has been imprisoned since an Australian court sentenced the 78-year-old to six years in prison in March.
Tim Lennon, the president of Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), says the church should have been decisive following Pell’s conviction and immediately defrocked him.
“I don’t know what other proof any organization needs other than a conviction. Them saying ‘Well, let’s wait for the appeal,’ that’s sort of a cowardly way to approach someone who was convicted of sexual abuse and rape,” Lennon tells TIME.
According to the Associated Press, Pell is no longer a member of the pope’s Council of Cardinals or a Vatican official.
Massimo Faggioli, a professor of historical theology at Villanova University, a private Catholic institution, says that he believes the Vatican’s handling of the Pell case shows it made a strategic decision to allow Pell to face secular justice – –and that shows progress.
Faggioli contends that Pell’s conviction has caused a divide between the conservative and liberal sides in the Church, and by not interfering the Vatican is remaining neutral. He recalls the Church’s controversial handling of Boston’s Cardinal Bernard Francis Law, who was accused of covering up child sex abuse. Law was allowed to resign in 2002 and move to Rome, where Faggioli says he was “given a safe haven in the Vatican and shielded from the American justice system.”
“This was just 15 years ago, this is not centuries ago,” Faggioli says. “So that is frustrating but is a huge step forward for the Vatican, accepting that there is no possible fight against sexual abuse in the Catholic Church without secular justice.”
Following the Victoria Supreme Court’s 2-1 ruling against Pell, the AP reports that his attorneys are considering a further appeal to Australia’s High Court.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement that, “As the proceedings continue to develop, the Holy See recalls that the Cardinal has always maintained his innocence throughout the judicial process and that it is his right to appeal to the High Court.”
According to the AP, Bruni further stated that the Vatican will allow Pell to exhaust all of his appeals before they begin an internal investigation, which Bruni says is consistent with how the church has handled other sex abuse cases.
This is a seeming reversal from the Vatican, which said in a statement in February following the announcement of the guilty verdict that investigations into Pell would begin.
“The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith will now handle the case following the procedure and within the time established by canonical norm,” interim director of the Vatican press office Alessandro Gisotti said in a statement at the time.
Lennon says that history shows survivors of clerical sexual abuse still should not look to the church for any kind of justice.
“It makes me speechless that they’ve kept him as a cardinal,” Lennon says. “That means he is the prince of the Church — the third-highest ranking member of the Church. So now we’re faced with a situation where survivors have to rely on civil courts to achieve justice because we have not seen that within the Church.
He says part of the problem is that the Church continues to refer to its own precedent for how it handles abuse cases. “And we have found over the last 30 years that these processes do not protect children, and so when we have civil society taking action we find this is the greatest form of providing justice for victims.”
Faggioli says he is sympathetic to survivors of clerical sexual abuse who expect more from the Vatican.
“So even though it is frustrating — because it’s about waiting for the justice — it’s the only possible way and it is really quite astonishing in a good way for the Vatican to say ‘We don’t interfere with this, we trust secular justice in individual countries, and we will wait,'” he says. “That is quite new by historical standards.”
(REYKJAVIK, Iceland) — Iceland’s leader has announced that she will skip U.S. Vice President Mike Pence’s visit to her Nordic nation, opting instead to keep “prior commitments” by attending a trade union conference in Sweden.
Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir said that she’s planned for months to give the keynote speech for the Council of Nordic Trade Unions’ annual meeting in Malmo, Sweden, on Sept. 3 — the day before Pence’s arrival. She has no plans to return the following day for his visit.
“This visit, that was organized by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, has been bouncing a lot around the calendar so that it has been very difficult to organize oneself around it,” she told Icelandic broadcaster RUV on Tuesday. Her office Wednesday confirmed that she had not changed her mind.
She also underscored that the arrangement was “absolutely not” about snubbing the Trump administration and that she had earlier this year met with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The decision was made before President Donald Trump announced that he would cancel a visit to another Nordic nation, Denmark.
Pence is expected to discuss Iceland’s strategic importance in the Arctic and NATO’s efforts to counter Russia in the region. In July, the United States announced it would invest $57 million on military infrastructure near Iceland’s capital Reykjavik.
“This is unprecedented for an Icelandic prime minister,” historian Thor Whitehead told The Associated Press. “I doubt any other Western leader would decide to address a friendly conference abroad instead of welcoming a major foreign ally.”
The office of prime minister holds the highest authority in Iceland, where the presidency is a symbolic position without much formal power.
Since taking office, Jakobsdottir has spearheaded progressive policies on abortion rights, LGBT rights and climate change. Activists including members of her own Left Green Party have protested Pence’s visit, calling it “disrespectful” to minorities.
Pence’s visit is organized by Iceland’s foreign ministry, led by Gudlaugur Thor Thordarson from Iceland’s conservative Independence Party. The party is Iceland’s largest and entered into a rare coalition with Jakobsdottir’s party after failing to secure a majority in elections in 2017.
Pence will be the first U.S. vice president to visit Iceland, a country of just 350,000 people, since George H.W. Bush visited Reykjavik in 1983.
The Amazon rainforest has seen a record number of forest fires this year, according to Brazil’s Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais, a space research center. The INPE detects and tracks fires through satellites — in other words, the current blazes are large enough that, collectively, they are visible from space.
The INPE said Tuesday that it has so far detected an 83% increase from the same time period in 2018, Reuters reports. It’s the highest number of fires recorded since 2013, when record-keeping began. The space research agency said satellite images have spotted 9,507 new fires since Thursday in the Amazon basin. As of Wednesday morning, 74,155 fires have been detected in Brazil, according to the INPE’s burn data, which provides daily updates of the number of fire outbreaks detected.
Images show Roraima, Brazil’s northernmost state located in the Amazon, covered in smoke, Reuters reports. Neighboring Brazilian state Amazonas has declared an emergency in its southern part, while the state Acre, which borders Peru, was put on environmental alert on Aug. 16 because of the fires. Some fires have been burning for more than two weeks.
The surge in fires comes amid growing concerns over Brazil’s far-right president Jair Bolsonaro’s rollback of environmental protections. The INPE reports the new record just weeks after Bolsonaro fired the agency’s director over conflict regarding its data on deforestation.
The BBC reports smoke from the fires caused a blackout Monday in São Paulo.
🌎Just a little alert to the world: the sky randomly turned dark today in São Paulo, and meteorologists believe it’s smoke from the fires burning *thousands* of kilometers away, in Rondônia or Paraguay. Imagine how much has to be burning to create that much smoke(!). SOS🌎 pic.twitter.com/P1DrCzQO6x
The fires in the Amazon come at a time when parts of the world long considered essential in the fight against climate change are also going up in flame. Wildfires have broken out across the Arctic, including in Siberia, Greenland and Alaska, where millions of acres have been burned.
Under Bolsonaro’s administration, Brazil has aimed to roll back some of its longtime policies protecting the Amazon — a massive carbon reserve essential to fighting the effects of global warming — by pulling back on efforts that combat illegal logging, ranching and mining in the rainforest, the New York Times reports.
Part of Bolsonaro’s presidential campaign platform included promising to open access to Brazil’s protected lands for commercial use. Less than a year into his term, the Amazon in Brazil has lost over 1,330 square miles of forest cover, marking a 39% increase from the same time period in 2018. The fires have spread in areas that have seen a lot of deforestation, such as the states of Mato Grosso and Para, according to Reuters.
The increased rate of fires is connected to the uptick in deforestation in a number of ways, says Deborah Lawrence, an environmental sciences professor at the University of Virginia. Deforestation involves clearing trees for land usage to transform an area of the rainforest into a pasture or a field; to do that, fire is required to burn through the extra woody material.
But deforestation also hinders the hydrological cycles controlled by the Amazon, according to Lawrence. Trees in the Amazon rainforest move water into the atmosphere from the soil, which provides rainfall elsewhere in the forest.
“If you clear forests, you change that dynamic,” Lawrence says. “There’s no trees to pump moisture into the atmosphere. Rain fall is going to either settle into the soil and stay there, or, if there’s a lot, run off into rivers and end up far away.”
Bolsonaro has blamed the uptick in fires on the season, saying it is the time of of year when farmers will deliberately set fires to clear space for land. “I used to be called Captain Chainsaw. Now I am Nero, setting the Amazon aflame. But it is the season of the queimada,” he said, according to Reuters. (Queimada is “burned” in Portuguese.)
While forest fires can occur during Brazil’s dry season, experts say the high number of fires seen this year could not just be blamed on the time of year—and note that the Amazon, as a rainforest, does not, own its own, see the same kind of wildfires that are perceived as more natural events in drier places like California. The kind of fires happening now come from deforestation and rising temperatures felt worldwide.
“Trees, if they’re stressed out by heat repeatedly, are more susceptible to other kinds of damage,” Lawrence says. “There’s persistent chronic stresses, and a hot summer, and both are combining to provide kinder for lots of fires.”
Carlos Nobre, a Brazilian climate scientist and expert in tropical forests, tells TIME the number of fires this year is even higher than in 2016, when Brazil suffered its worst drought in decades and saw an outbreak of more than 68,000 fires. Beyond the combined effects of climate change and deforestation are the political and cultural implications. Bolsonaro and other Brazilian politicians have empowered people to clear the land they want as part of what they see as a battle against those who want to preserve the Amazon. Culturally, agricultural growth is measured by land expansions, not by the number of cattle or crops produced, he says. That further encourages people toward seeking more land.
“Most of the increasing supply to meet growing demands comes from increase in the agricultural area,” he says.
Without a policy that totally ends deforestation, Nobre says the Amazon will reach a tipping point—if 25% of the forest is removed in deforestation, the lack of trees combined with global warming will completely change the rainfall systems, leading to climate that’s similar to a savannah for more than half the forest. Nobre, who published his findings in a 2016 study, says that at the current rate of deforestation, the Amazon is set to hit that point in 25 to 30 years.
If deforestation picks up — as the latest spate of fires appears to indicate is happening — it will be just 15 to 20 years.
“This is very sad,” Nobre says. “We usually would see this surge of fire in very, very exceptionally dry years. The fact that this record-breaking figure comes out in a relatively un-dry dry season shows that deforestation is increasing.”
(CARACAS, Venezuela) — Dr. Saturnina Clemente pulls up to the small clinic in the impoverished Caucaguita neighborhood armed with one of Venezuela’s most sought-after commodities: Hormonal implants to prevent pregnancy.
In a country where contraceptives are in short supply, word in the shantytown on the outskirts of Venezuela’s capital spreads quickly. The lucky get on a list run by community leaders. The less fortunate hope there will be extras.
The veteran doctor has 104 implants and there won’t be enough for everyone. As a physician at the nation’s largest pediatric hospital, Clemente knows first-hand that the consequences for those who don’t get one are high.
“It’s a sense of impotency, of frustration,” she says. “You see that it’s not enough, that the demand is much higher.”
As Venezuela’s crisis deepens, women are bearing the brunt of the nation’s upheaval. Despite promises by the socialist government to provide every woman access to family planning, recent surveys and interviews with health professionals indicate access to contraceptives remains incomprehensive.
International organizations like the U.N. Population Fund have begun stepping in by importing tens of thousands of contraceptives this year, but their work is still limited. It’s an ordeal with increasingly international ramifications, as a growing number of pregnant women flee to countries like Colombia seeking care they cannot get in Venezuela.
“Women are getting pregnant and don’t have options,” said Luisa Kislinger, a women’s rights activist. “They’re forced into motherhood.”
Nicol Ramírez is 15 and already a mother. Her name is on Clemente’s list, but to get an implant she needs to show a negative pregnancy test. The young mom and her older sister frantically call their mother. They need 40,000 bolivars, the equivalent of about $3, in order to do the simple test at a nearby laboratory.
“The situation in this country isn’t one for having children,” Ramírez says, balancing her baby daughter on one hip. “I’m still a girl myself.”
During the late Hugo Chávez’s presidency, Venezuela’s government expanded services aimed at helping poor mothers by providing monthly cash transfers. Chavez lavished praise on women and hailed the so-called “revolutionary mothers” who would help promote his vision.
The 1999 constitution he advanced guarantees “full family planning services” to women among a host of other benefits.
“The socialist revolution should be feminist,” he declared.
Despite those initiatives, Chávez’s government made only modest advances, at best, in improving contraceptive access. Government data shows that teenage pregnancies continued to steadily increase during his time in power.
“There was a major advance with the constitution, with getting all these new rights and state obligations,” said Rachel Elfenbein, the author of an upcoming book on social programs created under Chávez for women. “But when it came to implementation, if and where it happened, it was patchy.”
President Nicolás Maduro has struggled to advance his predecessor’s agenda amidst a crippling economic contraction worse than the U.S. Great Depression. Few if any women still get cash transfers except for occasional “bonuses” equivalent to a dollar or two. Maternal death rates rose over 65% between 2015 and 2016.
“Under Maduro we’ve seen an unprecedented setback,” Kislinger said.
Health professionals believe Venezuela could cut its high maternal mortality rate by a third doing one thing: Providing contraceptives.
The extent of Venezuela’s birth control shortage and the impact on women is difficult to quantify in part because the government has not released information on key indicators like teenage pregnancy since 2012. According to those now dated figures, just over 23% of all births in Venezuela were to women under the age of 20.
Some independent health organizations and women’s rights groups contend the rate could now be as high as 28%. A study of four hospitals last year found that over a quarter of all births recorded were to teenage mothers.
The most recent U.N. world population report estimates Venezuela’s teen pregnancy rate is about 85.3 per 1,000 adolescents ages 15-19. That figure would mark a slight decline, though is still over double the global rate. By comparison, Colombia’s rate is 66.7 per 1,000 teens ages 15-19.
“We don’t know what the reality is in 2019,” said Nelmary Díaz, a program director the Civil Association for Family Planning, an organization that runs several clinics and has operated since 1986. “That worries us.”
After years of denying the existence of a humanitarian crisis, Maduro has recently begun allowing international aid. While a large part of the emergency assistance has gone toward food and medicine, a small portion is going toward reproductive health.
The U.N. Population Fund has imported 45,000 hormonal implants so far with the government’s authorization. An estimated 17,000 have been distributed thus far at hospitals and clinics like the one in Caucaguita where women line up before dawn.
“I don’t want to have more kids,” said Yailyn Salas, 20, the mother of a 9-month-old son in the line. “I want to close the shop.”
Among the millions of Venezuelans who have chosen to flee are thousands of pregnant women. In Colombia, over 26,000 Venezuelan women have given birth since August 2015. That surge is straining Colombia’s already fragile health care system and testing the nation’s mostly welcoming approach toward Venezuelan migrants.
In recent months, the mayor of one large Colombian city likened Venezuelans to “a poor baby factory” while a popular newspaper columnist implored migrants to “stop giving birth.”
“If you don’t stop reproducing like you are, it’s going to be even harder to see you as an opportunity for growth instead of a problem,” journalist Claudia Palacios wrote.
Ramírez found out she was pregnant at 14 with her boyfriend of one year. Condoms and birth control pills were either impossible to find or too expensive. When she told her boyfriend the news, Ramírez said he responded coldly. He was 23 and already a father. He told her that he couldn’t handle another responsibility.
She hasn’t heard from him since.
Adolescent moms under 15 are twice as likely to die during pregnancy. Though Ramírez had access to prenatal care, doctors nonetheless had to perform an emergency C-section after the baby’s heartbeat became irregular.
“She was born practically dead,” Ramírez said, her soft voice turning somber.
Ramírez’s ordeal to find birth control isn’t unusual. An independent survey of 151 pharmacies consulted over a five-month period last year found some contraceptives like the patch could not be found at all in Venezuela, while others including birth control pills are experiencing near-total shortages.
Even with this year’s increased access to aid, experts say Venezuela will need far more to address the needs of the estimated 9 million women in the country at risk of pregnancy.
“It’s a very small impact,” said Jorge Díaz Polanco, a sociologist with the independent Venezuelan Observatory of Health.
Clemente’s brigade was able to get ahold of a handful of the U.N.-provided implants that prevent ovulation and last four years. On two recent days, her team set up shop at a clinic where posters in support of socialist leaders filled the walls. They quickly got to work, injecting each woman with an anesthetic and then sticking a small metal tube into their upper arm so the implant could be pushed through.
By 11:30 a.m. the contraceptives were gone.
“The implants have run out!” an organizer dressed in a faded Stone Temple Pilots T-shirt shouted.
Nearly 40 women were still in line. Some sighed. Others were visibly angry.
“I feel deceived,” said Salas, who missed the cutoff.
She said a nearby health organization was selling birth control implants at a subsidized cost of around 90,000 bolivars, or $6.50. But that was just slightly less than what her husband makes an in an entire week.
“If I get one, I don’t eat,” she said.
Ramírez and her sister were among the lucky few to get the last of the implants after they showed Clemente’s team their negative test. Their mom had managed to get them the money.
Three other women that day would learn they were pregnant.
Ramírez cringed as a nurse injected her with the anesthetic before placing the implant. Just as the procedure finished, the lights in the building went out — the second blackout in the neighborhood that week.
Ramírez left the darkened clinic with her baby in her arm, relieved to know she wouldn’t become a mom again soon.
“I’m not ready to have a child,” she said as her baby began to cry. “I’m a girl who is 15.”
(COPENHAGEN, Denmark) — Escalating an international spat , President Donald Trump said Wednesday he scrapped his trip to Denmark because the prime minister made a “nasty” statement when she rejected his idea to buy Greenland as an absurdity.
“You don’t talk to the United States that way, at least under me,” Trump told reporters in Washington. “I thought it was not a nice statement, the way she blew me off.”
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the whole thing “an absurd discussion” and said she was “disappointed and surprised” that Trump had canceled his visit.
Trump said Frederiksen’s comment labeling his idea as absurd “was nasty. I thought it was an inappropriate statement. All she had to say was say, ‘No, we wouldn’t be interested.'”
Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory of the U.S. ally, and Frederiksen said the U.S. remains one of Denmark’s close allies.
The political brouhaha over the world’s largest island comes from its strategic location in the Arctic. Global warming is making Greenland more accessible to potential oil and mineral resources. Russia, China, the U.S., Canada and other countries are racing to stake as strong a claim as they can to Arctic lands, hoping they will yield future riches.
Trump was scheduled to visit Denmark on Sept. 2-3 as part of a European tour. But early Wednesday, he tweeted his decision to indefinitely postpone the trip. The move stunned Danes and blindsided the Danish royal palace. Spokeswoman Lene Balleby told The Associated Press that it came as “a surprise” to the royal household, which had formally invited Trump.
“Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time,” Trump said.
The vast island of Greenland sits between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans, has a population of 56,000 and has 80% of its land mass covered by a 1.7 million-square-kilometer (660,000 square-mile) ice sheet.
For all of Greenland’s appeal, scientists consider it the canary in the coal mine for climate change and say its massive ice sheet has seen one of its biggest melts on record this summer, contributing to a global rise in sea levels.
Frederiksen said she is standing behind the government of Greenland.
“A discussion about a potential sale of Greenland has been put forward. It has been rejected by Greenland Premier Kim Kielsen and I fully stand behind that rejection,” she told reporters in Copenhagen.
Frederiksen, who took office two months ago in a minority Social Democratic government, went on to say that diplomatic relations between Copenhagen and Washington “are not in any crisis in my opinion” despite Trump’s canceled plans.
“The invitation for a stronger strategic cooperation with the Americans in the Arctic is still open,” Frederiksen said, adding “the United States is one of our closest allies.”
Others in Denmark were not as gracious.
Martin Lidegaard, a former Danish foreign minister, told broadcaster TV2 that it was “a diplomatic farce” and Trump’s behavior was “grotesque.”
Trump’s cancellation was “deeply insulting to the people of Greenland and Denmark,” former Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt wrote on Twitter.
Claus Oxfeldt, chairman of Denmark’s main police union, told Danish media that authorities had been busy planning the third visit by a sitting U.S. president to the Scandinavian NATO member. “It has created great frustrations to have spent so much time preparing for a visit that is canceled,” Oxfeldt was quoted as saying.
Ordinary Danes shook their heads at the news, with many calling Trump immature.
“He thinks he can just buy Greenland. He acts like an elephant in a china shop,” said Pernille Iversen, a 41-year-old shopkeeper in Copenhagen.
“This is an insult to (Queen) Margrethe, to Denmark,” said Steen Gade, a 55-year-old road worker.
In Greenland, Johannes Kyed, an employee with a mine company, told Denmark’s TV2 channel that wanting to buy a country and its people is a relic of the past.
“This is not the way the world works today,” Kyed said.
The U.S. ambassador to Denmark, Carla Sands, was apparently not informed of Trump’s decision ahead of time.
Shortly before Trump canceled the trip on Twitter, she sent a tweet saying “Denmark is ready for POTUS,” using an acronym for “President of the United States” along with Trump’s Twitter handle and a photo from Copenhagen’s City Hall square, where a Dane had paid for two pro-Trump ads on giant electronic screens.
Trump said Sunday he was interested in buying Greenland for strategic purposes, but said a purchase was not a priority for his government at this time. Both Frederiksen and Greenland leader Kielsen responded that Greenland is not for sale.
“The Prime Minister was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct,” Trump said in the tweet Wednesday. “I thank her for that and look forward to rescheduling sometime in the future!”
Trump is still expected to visit nearby Poland beginning on Aug. 31.
Retreating ice could uncover potential oil and mineral resources in Greenland which, if successfully tapped, could dramatically change the island’s fortunes. However, no oil has yet been found in Greenlandic waters and the thickness of the ice means exploration is only possible in coastal regions.
Even then, conditions are far from ideal, due to Greenland’s long winters with frozen ports, 24-hour darkness and temperatures that regularly drop below minus 30 degrees Celsius (minus 22 Fahrenheit) in the island’s northern regions.
American leaders have tried to buy Greenland before. In 1946, the U.S. proposed paying Denmark $100 million to buy Greenland after flirting with the idea of swapping land in Alaska for strategic parts of the Arctic island.
Under a 1951 deal, Denmark allowed the U.S. to build bases and radar stations on Greenland.
The U.S. Air Force currently maintains one base in northern Greenland, Thule Air Force Base, 1,200 kilometers (745 miles) south of the North Pole. Former military airfields in Narsarsuaq, Kulusuk and Kangerlussuaq have become civilian airports.
The Thule base, constructed in 1952, was originally designed as a refueling base for long-range bombing missions. Since 1961, it has been a ballistic missile early warning and space surveillance site.
(CAIRO) — Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed they shot down a U.S. drone over the country’s north, as a leading rights group said Wednesday the Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis killed at least 47 Yemeni fishermen in bombing attacks on fishing boats last year.
Yahia Sarie, a military spokesman for the Iran-backed Houthis, said in a statement their air defenses downed a U.S. MQ-9 drone on Tuesday over the northern city of Dhamar. He said the drone was hit by a missile.
The U.S. military’s Central Command said it was aware of claims that an American MQ-9 Reaper drone had been shot down over Yemen, but declined to elaborate.
In June, the U.S. said an MQ-9 Reaper was shot down by the Houthis. It said Iran helped the Yemeni rebels bring down the drone.
The conflict in Yemen began with the 2014 takeover of Sanaa by the Houthis, who drove out the internationally recognized government. In March 2015, the coalition launched its air campaign to prevent the rebels from overrunning the south.
Also on Wednesday, Human Rights Watch said the Saudi-led coalition carried out at least five deadly attacks on Yemeni fishing boats in 2018, killing at least 47 Yemeni fishermen, including seven children.
The New York-based group also said that more than 100 Yemeni fishermen are being held in Saudi Arabia, some of whom have been tortured in custody.
There was no immediate response by the coalition to the HRW allegations.
The rights group said it interviewed “survivors, witnesses, and knowledgeable sources about seven fishing boat attacks: six in 2018 and one in 2016.” Civilians died in five attacks carried out by small arms and heavy weapons.
It said the fishermen waved white cloths, raised their hands, or otherwise showed they posed no threat. In three attacks, coalition forces did not attempt to rescue survivors adrift at sea, and many drowned, HRW said.
The group said the Saudi-led coalition officials who ordered or carried out the attacks or tortured detainees “are most likely responsible for war crimes.”
“The naval attacks on Yemeni fishing boats make it clear that the Saudi-led coalition is not only killing civilians through countless illegal airstrikes, but also while conducting operations at sea,” said Priyanka Motaparthy, HRW’s acting emergencies director.
The group urged a United Nations’ investigations into the attacks, and the U.N. Security Council on officers and commanders responsible for violations of the laws of war.
It also called for the U.S. and other Western countries to “immediately cease all sales and transfers of weapons” to Saudi Arabia.
“How much more proof do countries continuing to sell weapons to Saudi Arabia need to stop all sales, including of warships, or risk becoming complicit in war crimes,” Motaparthy said.
HRW says that the Iran-backed Houthis have also attacked commercial traffic in the Red Sea.
Saudi-led airstrikes have hit schools, hospitals and weddings, killing thousands of Yemeni civilians. The Houthis have used drones and missiles to attack neighboring Saudi Arabia and have also targeted vessels in the Red Sea.
Iran has repeatedly denied supplying the Houthis with drone or missile technology, both of which the rebels have increasingly used, including to target Saudi Arabia. The kingdom has claimed that Iran supplied the missiles or at least helped the Houthis manufacture them from parts that were in Yemen before the war.
(COPENHAGEN, Denmark) — U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to cancel a visit to Denmark next month after the prime minister described his plan to buy Greenland as “absurd” took the Danish royal palace by surprise, a spokeswoman said Wednesday. Lene Balleby told The Associated Press Wednesday that the news was “a surprise” to the royal household, which formally had invited Trump to visit Denmark Sep. 2 and 3 as part of a European trip. She had no further comments.

Trump’s visit to Poland is expected to be maintained.

Chief economic advisor K Subramanian Wednesday called for a "mindset change" in the private sector by desisting from the tendency to grab profit and socialise losses and also seek sops in times of stress. He also said it will be only investment and not consumption that will help the economy grow, explaining that the latter boosts an economy with a higher per capita income of say USD 10,000 or more. The comments come amidst increasing criticism both from the corporate world as well as by analysts and economists outside the government about the issues plaguing the economy, and many a sector like the auto sending SoSes for help.Comparing the private sector, which benefited the most from the 1991 reforms, to a grown-up man, he said, "this 30- year-old man and must start to stand on his own feet. This adult cannot keep asking his father for help and live with the idea of personalsing profit and socializing losses.""We need to move on; we're a market economy, where assets do get reallocated when someone doesn't manage it well," he told an event organised by Jana Small Finance Bank this evening.Pointing to an op-ed article by fellow economist Arvind Panagariya about the current economic situation, he sought to drive the point of motivations while the private sector makes pleas for help and called for the need to inculcate "good habits" in the private sector.Meanwhile, in a different take on what should drive economic growth, Subramanian pitched for a move away from consumption which has fuelled growth for the last decade and refocus on investment which has been falling for the six to seven years.Talks about consumption driving demand works very well where the economy crosses the USD 10,000 per capita threshold, but below that level its is investment that will drive growth, he said."Consumption acts like a force-multiplier, but it isn't the key driver of growth in a low-per capita economy but it's investment what is really critical to create jobs and for that we need investments, particularly by private sector."Subramanian also sought to blame the previous UPA government for the current mess in the economy saying the past government did not carry out enough structural reforms. But he was quick to add that the present government is solidly focused on growth. He said the lack of transmission suggests that banks are independent and not governed by fiats from the government, he said.
NEW DELHI: Risk of inflation has ceased to be a concern for India's central bank. Now, it has started worrying about benign inflation, which has remained persistently low for a long time now within RBI's comfort zone, allowing it to bring down policy rates. At the August 5-7 rate-setting meeting, members of RBI's monetary policy committee (MPC) suggested that the significant moderation in retail inflation was actually reflecting softening of demand in the economy.RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said the moderation of CPI inflation excluding food, fuel and contraction in merchandise imports is actually reflecting a slowdown of domestic demand, the minutes of the last MPC meet released on Wednesday showed. This raises hopes that RBI may cut interest rates more rapidly going forward, trying to create demand in the economy."With the headline inflation projected to remain within target over the next one year, there is scope for reducing interest rates further going forward," Das said.In his statement, Das said economic activity has shown signs of further weakening since the last policy review in June 2019 and credit growth has slowed down somewhat in recent times. The economy needs a larger push. "Credit to micro, small and medium enterprises, in particular, remains anaemic," he said.Das also told the MPC that the transmission of rate cuts is expected to improve in the coming weeks and months. He said there is a need to bolster dwindling domestic demand and support investment activity, even as the impact of past three rate cuts is gradually working its way into the real economy.RBI cut the repo rate by 35 basis points on August 7 – the fourth successive rate reduction – bringing it down to a nine-year low in an attempt to boost an economy which has been growing at its slowest pace in five years. In its policy statement, the central bank reduced its growth projection for the economy to 6.9 per cent for this financial year from 7 per cent forecast in June due to a slowdown in demand and investments.MPC member Michael Debabrata Patra said the macroeconomic outlook appears to have darkened, which is what is getting reflected in the inflation outcomes.Ravindra H Dholakia, another member, suggested that positive sentiments and a business-conducive environment need to be enhanced to boost investment activities. "It requires carrying out several economic reforms in land and labour markets, electricity tariffs and other resources, and taxation of income and goods and services, besides urgently correcting prevailing high real interest rates," he said.Dholakia also believes fiscal slippage is not a matter of serious concern for FY20, because the Union Budget has maintained the target given in the fiscal consolidation path and state budgets put together are also not likely to show any serious divergence from that path.
The 73-year-old Congress leader and former Union minister Palaniappan Chidambaram is facing the toughest crisis of his career. The lawyer-turned-politician has been slapped with money laundering and corruption charges in the INX Media case and is in the CBI custody following the Delhi High Court's refusal to grant him anticipatory bail on Tuesday.INX Media caseIn May 2017, the Central Bureau of Investigation registered an FIR for alleged discrepancy in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board's (FIPB) clearance given to the INX group in 2007. Chidambaram was Finance Minister at that time. The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND) under the Finance Ministry had raised queries over foreign direct investment of over Rs 305 crore made by three Mauritius-based companies in INX Media Pvt Ltd, then owned by Peter Mukherjea and his wife Indrani Mukerjea. The case was forwarded by Mumbai IT Department to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which also registered a case against the media organisation in 2010. INX Media in turn engaged Chidambaram's son Karti -- the promoter-director of Chess Management Service (P) Ltd, to resolve the issue, by influencing various departments of FIPB.The rise of ChidambaramChidambaram, who has a degree in law and an MBA from Harvard Business School, joined the Congress in 1984 and contested and won Lok Sabha elections from Sivaganga around the same time. He had been associated with several ministries including that of commerce and industry, mostly as junior minister till mid-1990s. In 1996, Chidambaram quit the Congress for a brief period to join Tamil Maanila Congress -- a breakaway faction of the state Congress unit.He made his mark as Finance Minister in 1997 when he presented the "dream Budget" under then Prime Minister Deve Gowda, who was leading a fragile United Front government at that time.Despite being part of a weak coalition government, Chidambaram introduced bold reforms including drastic reduction of personal and corporate tax rates in the 1997 Budget. Soon after, he rejoined the Congress. His spectacular rise in politics started only in 2004. He was given the important portfolio of finance in the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government. As Finance Minister, he had to deal with the Left parties, which provided outside support to the government and many of his proposals, aimed at expanding private sector participation to boost growth of the Indian economy, did not see the light of day. However, he played an important role in introducing the Value Added Tax (VAT) while notifying in the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management Act (FRBMA). However, he is remembered most for designing and implementing the Rs 70,000 crore farm debt waiver scheme, which many believe, went a long way in the helping the UPA retain power in the subsequent 2009 Lok Sabha elections. While economists and policy makers criticised this move, he managed to impress the top echelon of the Congress party. In November 2008, Chidambaram already touted as an achiever by his party menwas entrusted with home ministry.ControversiesChidambaram was caught in the middle of a controversy when news reports suggested that he had manipulated the voting process to win the 2009 Lok Sabha election from Sivaganga. AIADMK candidate Raja Kannappan was declared elected by over 3,500 votes initially on May 16, 2009 but within hours Chidambaram's fate turned, and he was declared elected by 3,354 votes. As Home Minister, he had a tougher job at hand. His tenure was laced with criticism, especially on issues relating to security. In 2011, when he was in charge of the Home Ministry, three co-ordinated bomb explosions ripped Mumbai killing many. These blasts took place barely three years after the horrific terror attacks in two of Mumbai's premier hotels. Not just that, Chidambaram was seen by many -- including those from his own party -- as a man who was arrogant, head-strong and he often remained incommunicado. He had also been assaulted by a Sikh journalist in April 2009 for giving a "clean chit" to Jagdish Tytler. In August 2012 Chidambaram was removed from the Home Ministry, and he once again resumed charge as Finance Minister. He is also often blamed for forcing the public sector banks to expand their credit portfolio in a reckless mannersomething that has led to the alarming rise in the non performing asset levels in the government banks.Twist of talesInterestingly, in 2010, the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested BJP leader and Home Minister Amit Shah in connection with the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case. Shah was also sent to jail.
By Rahul Satija and Suvashree GhoshIndia is stamping out shadow financiers at the fastest pace in recent years, in the latest blow to a beleaguered sector battling a prolonged funding crunch due to rising wariness toward it in the nation's credit markets. The central bank canceled registrations of 1,851 non-bank finance companies in the year ended March 31, more than 8 times those in the previous year, according to data received from the Reserve Bank of India in response to a Right to Information request. The number of lenders dropped to about 9,700, the lowest in at least a decade, as a result. Firms may be failing to secure the minimum funds needed to operate due to the cash crunch."RBI canceled permits of these NBFCs as they couldn't raise even 20 million rupees" to meet regulatory requirements, said Mahesh Thakkar, director general at Finance Industry Development Council. The lobbying body for the financiers had been demanding a liquidity window for NBFCs through banks as a lifeline.70779957 The perils in the sector highlighted by missed repayments on dues by Dewan Housing Finance Corp. and Reliance Home Finance Ltd. in recent months have heightened risk-off sentiment and worsened the lenders' access to domestic money markets. MUMBAI: Public sector banks are shutting many of their ATMs and branches in major cities to cut expenses as urban customers are increasingly taking to digital channels for their banking needs, rendering the costs for maintaining and setting up these physical infrastructures unnecessary. The top ten state-run banks with the largest branch networks have shut nearly 5,500 ATMs and 600 branches over the past one year, ET analysis of the latest quarterly reports of these banks show. These closures come at a period when public banks have desperately tried to reduce their balance sheet expenditures as they have struggled to register profits owing to an environment of muted credit growth and rising non-performing assets (NPAs).The biggest of these lenders, State Bank of India, between June 2018 and 2019, had shut 420 branches and 768 ATMs, while the amalgamated entity of Bank of Baroda, Vijaya and Dena banks shut 40 branches and 274 ATMs in this period. The other banks which have shrunk either their branch or ATM fleet include Punjab National Bank, Central Bank of India, Canara Bank, Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, Union Bank and Allahabad Bank. 70779570 Of the banks analysed by ET, only Indian Bank increased both is ATMs and branch networks in this period. While nine out these ten banks have reduced their ATMs, six of these ten banks have cut down on its branches.Bankers said that these shutdowns have happened mostly in cities, where the banking networks are amply penetrated and people are increasingly getting used to digital transactions."Public sector banks are closing branches and ATMs mostly in metro cities and not in rural or semi-urban areas," said Pallav Mohapatra, MD and CEO, Central Bank of India. While most major private sector banks such as Axis Bank, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank have all increased their banking networks in this period, RBI data shows that these banks mostly deploy their ATMs in major cities.ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, IndusInd Bank and Axis Bank have dismal rural deployment ratios at 5%, 7%, 3% and 12%, respectively. While public sector banks are deploying one out of every five ATMs in these geographies, for private sector banks, the deployment rate is less that one for every 10 ATMs."It's a factor of demand. Why should there be so many branches and ATMs in metros when there is so much of competition? If I have an ATM in a metro and have a limited hit rate, why should I continue deploying them?" asked Mohapatra. Most of these state-run lenders have had a tough one year in terms of registering profits while maintaining requisite liquidity buffers, as slowing credit growth and provisions on rising NPAs have squeezed the margins of these lenders. Bank of India, which shut 36 branches and 1,269 ATMs last year, said that these closures were measures to wipe needless costs off the balance sheet."It's (shutting of ATM and branches) mostly on the grounds of business viability. The rationalisation drive for branches and ATMs will be continued during FY20 as well," said N Damodharan, executive director, Bank of India, during their results conference. As per some industry experts, the closure drive may soon become a trend, as costs of maintaining these networks may far exceed investments in digital channels as more and more banking customers go through a behaviour change."As customers get more comfortable banking and transacting over digital channels, ATMs and branches may soon become redundant," said a senior public sector banker requesting anonymity."Soon even rural customers would become digitally empowered and banks would continue saving costs on these fronts."

Whether the situation turns in the next quarter or two is a matter of analysis and debate, but this is a cycle which is down and the fact that there will be a cycle where prices will be up, is a given, says Anshul Saigal, Chief Investment Officer, Kotak PMS. Excerpts from an interview with ETNOW. Being a midcap specialist how are you keeping your nerves under check right now. Well you have been doing it for a long time as well but still it is a difficult time for midcap portfolio managers is not it?In terms of prices, it is really tough time for mid and smallcaps and this time it is most important to keep track of two things; a) that you are not buying into questionable balance sheets and that the balance sheets are strong; b)the earnings power of companies is intact even if one sees that immediate earnings are getting impacted. What I mean by that is that assume a company which has over a period of 10 years given a EBITDA margin of about 15% and that in the last one year, because of general volatility in the economy as also in the markets, the EBITDA margin has come down to say 12%, then is it likely that going forward EBITDA margins will revert towards 15% or will they consistently remain now at 12%? If they will remain at 12%, then the diminution in value is permanent but if they are likely to revert to 15%. There is a great likelihood that multiples as also the prices will revert towards intrinsic value which is higher than what the current earnings suggest. Also, one must stay away from questionable balance sheets. Any balance sheet with excessive debt is prone to great volatility at this time. Because of the environment, there may be volatility in the business as well. So staying away from such companies is critical. Price action is a function of the market mood, the current mood is bad and hence prices are getting impacted adversely. The equity investor has to be able to take this price action with equanimity and with the greater precision on fundamentals of businesses if fundamentals remain, same things will turn. It is imminent and whether they turn in the next quarter or two quarters is a matter of analysis and debate, but this is a cycle which is down and that there will be a cycle where prices will be up is a given. How have you been analysing the earnings outlook for your portfolio? Have you trimmed the earnings outlook of your portfolio after the earning season almost winded up or are all the stories or the components of your portfolios intact though some trimming of the earnings estimate may be required? At times like this, it is important to look at the portfolio very critically or with extreme care, This is a great time to enhance the quality of the portfolio. In the last one year, quality names in the auto space, in the FMCG space, in consumer staple space have corrected 30% to 70%. These were companies which were trading till a year ago at much higher prices and people were jumping over one another to buy into these names at 2x the current prices. Now that prices have corrected, it is important to look at one's own portfolio and see whether to enhance the quality of the portfolio, certain stocks can go out and certain other stocks which have corrected, can be brought into the portfolio. The important aspect is the earnings growth -- whether your assessment of earnings growth has changed and hence the assessment of fundamentals has changed. Then it makes sense to look outside the portfolio. On the other hand, if earnings continue to do well while price action is adverse, then it may be good for the portfolio to buy into those existing names where prices have corrected. For our portfolio in particular, over the last year, we have seen x of one offs we have seen about 18% earnings growth, which is no mean feat in times like this. Our assessment is that, over the next two years, earnings growth will actually accelerate and that tells you that when prices have corrected, earnings are robust and further value is getting created. Hence, we sit very comfortably with the portfolio that we have. At the margin, we are doing certain changes. One such change is that to go through this period of volatility, we have certain cash proxies and we have certain amount of cash that we hold in the portfolio which allows the portfolio to have a cushion in times of volatility. In addition, we have an eagle eye on earnings. If earnings continue to grow, add on to existing names. That is how we are looking at our portfolio. How are you analysing commentary from some large industrial groups and conglomerates? Some time back, Mukesh Ambani, the Chairman of the biggest company in valuation terms, spoke about his intention to cut debt. Today Tata Sons chairman N. Chandra spoke about increasing the composition of profitability in the overall mix as the bulk of it coming from TCS. What is your analysis of these developments? One needs to step back and in a wholesome manner look at what is happening globally and then percolate down to why Indian business leader are making comments like this when global interest rates are zero or nearing zero certain yields are in negative territory. In fact, 100-year Austrian bonds are trading at negative yields at this time. It just tells you that there is a significant amount of debt in the system because cost of holding that debt is zero. I mean if I was to borrow money from you and I had to give you nothing to borrow that money, why would I not borrow it? Then the question arises that where has all this debt gone? Where all have excesses been created? Clearly in even 2008 debt was ballooning in the system and we saw excesses getting created in the mortgage market. This time, these are much wider because over the last 10 years, debt expansion has only gone up. Now extrapolate that to the Indian scenario. In India, many companies have built on debt in their balance sheets to build businesses and this debt bubble is prone to risk world over. Assume a situation where inflation moves up and hence yields move up, the losses on debt portfolios are going to be quite substantial because the marginal shift in interest rate will impact a 100-year bond quite meaningfully. Keeping that in mind, many of the Indian corporates in prudence are saying that our investment cycle is behind us, let us go ahead and reap rewards on what we have invested into our businesses. Many are saying we want to grow our businesses through internal accruals rather than build on capacities and take debt to build those capacities which may hurt us if there is volatility in the debt markets. So, it is a prudent step that given the environment, it is a much called for step and we at Kotak AMC welcome this. What is your take on the auto industry? The entire ecosystem is grappling with a slowdown. What do you make of what is happening in auto and how many more months for the sector to bottom out? This question is something that riles everybody. We have some thoughts and are divided into two parts; one is the market environment part and the other is the psychological part. Let's look at the environment part first. Last year, sometime around September, the IL&FS issue shook the credit system of our country and post that, a lot of the financers slowed down their lending to the system as also to the auto sector. That was the first break that was applied on the auto sector. The second was there was a shift in regulation. We are moving to BS-VI and that has various implications for people who are buying today and there is the anticipation that they will be selling their vehicle tomorrow and will recover a certain amount when they sell their vehicle. That value then goes down and hence a consumer is not sure whether he wants to buy today in a changing regulatory environment. Third, we also had the general election season and a resultant weakness in demand. Now let us move to the psychological aspect. There is a situation today where individuals are saying that the environment is uncertain and this is a discretionary spend. They would rather wait six months and then upgrade to a car. Now while the first three aspects can be modelled down into Excel sheets this change in psychology of the consumer is not something that you can model on Excel sheets. But it is a combination of both these factors which lead to a slowdown in the automobile sector. If you look at the overall ecosystem of automobiles, our per capita consumption of automobiles or the number of cars and two-wheelers that are plying on the roads is a miniscule number compared to the population of this country. Whether this is a cyclical or a secular slowdown can be answered by this aspect that only a small proportion of people use cars and two-wheelers and that number can go up . In our judgment, this is a cyclical slowdown, not a secular slowdown. Of course, the issue gets further muddied by the fact that you have a shift towards electric vehicles and combined mobility in the form of Ubers and Olas etc but even then, given the Indian environment, we are not really in a secular slowdown just now, there is significant room for growth. As regards how long it will take for this to change, in our judgment give it two to three quarters and probably closer to the festival season, we will get further clarity whether this is getting elongated or if we have seen most of the negativity behind us. So, probably to be conservative, three quarters and if you are aggressive, maybe two quarters.

From the moment the Delhi High Court rejected the anticipatory bail plea of senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram in the INX Media money laundering case, the CBI and ED teams have visited his residence four times in the past 12 hours. However, there's no trace of him.The Delhi High Court passed the order on Tuesday. On Wednesday, a special leave petition was filed in the Supreme Court by his legal team led by advocate and senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal, against the Delhi High Court order. The petition would be taken up for hearing by a bench headed by Justice N.V. Ramana.A four-member Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) team visited Chidambaram's Jor Bagh residence two times since Wednesday morning and asked his staff about his whereabouts.A CBI team late on Tuesday night had pasted a notice on Chidambaram's residence asking him to appear before the investigation officer "within two hours".The Congress leader was asked in the notice to present himself before the CBI Deputy Superintendent of Police R. Parthasarthy, who is probing the case, to record his statement under Section 161 of the CrPC.The notice pasted at Chidambaram house read: "Whereas it appears that you are acquainted with the facts and circumstances of the cases noted below, which I am now investigating under chapter XII of the CrPc, you are hereby directed to attend before me within two hours of the receipt for the purpose of the investigation of the case."After the notice was pasted, another six members of the CBI followed by an ED team also reached Chidambaram's residence on Tuesday night. The teams arrived separately at his residence. But left empty handed.Chidambaram, a seven time Lok Sabha MP, is now a Rajya Sabha member. His lawyers are likely to put an argument before the apex court seeking his protection from arrest.Asked how he sees the CBI action, senior lawyer and Congress leader Salman Khurshid said: "(It is) extremely unfair".The CBI is investigating Chidambaram in the INX Media case, which it had registered on May 15, 2017 alleging irregularities in the FIPB clearance granted to the media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007 during his tenure as Finance Minister. The ED is probing the money laundering case which it lodged in 2018.
If your salary hike this year was nowhere close to what you were hoping for, don't let it leave you feeling left out: You are hardly the only one to be left high and dry.Data from CMIE has just confirmed that appraisals were low everywhere in this season of discontent as Indian employers across the board firmly drew a line on their salary outgo. With sales numbers falling all around, private sector salary growth in the country in 2018-19 was the worst in 10 years (since 2009-10), a Hindustan Times analysis of CMIE's Prowess Database found. This, along with relevant data from other critical sectors, serves to provide a clear peek into the state of the Indian economy and the hands that run it: the worker.Double whammy or triple?Combined with rising unemployment, the fall in salary growth makes for a double whammy for the country's jobs scene. The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2017-18 has found that the all-India unemployment rate is now 6.1%, which is an all-time high — highest among male workers since 1977-78, and highest among the female since 1983.In fact, it could be a triple whammy of sorts when one takes into account the fact that hiring is becoming more and more lukewarm by the day, a Care Ratings survey has revealed. With banks, insurance companies, carmakers and logistics & infrastructure players hiring less and less, India's jobs scene is looking increasingly gloomy with hiring activity slowing across most sectors.According to PLFS, the 2017-18 number of the unemployed at 28.5 million is more than double that of 2011-12 when the number stood at 10.8 million. The number used to be around 10 million during the period between 1999-2000 and 2011-12.During the time between 2011-12 and 2017-18, 18 million people were added to the labour force even as just 0.5 million net jobs were created, which is being cited as one of the main reasons why joblessness in India is this acute now.(No) Pay hike is telling a storyThe CMIE data suggests that the overall tepid business environment was the main culprit behind sinking growth in corporate India's pay hikes. Numbers from the database — which lists data on salary and sales for the 10 years ending 2018-19 of as many as 4,953 companies — showed that sales of these companies slumped for four fiscals at a stretch beginning 2012-13.2016-17 witnessed a bit of a recovery and so did 2017-18, but it turned out to be temporary. As the recovery failed to take firm root, it may have prompted the decision to cut salary bills as companies small and big doubled down on cost cutting to keep their finances stable, the data suggests. In 2018-19, the percentage share of salaries in total sales revenue falling for the first time in seven years. Sales revenue during the year also fell significantly — after adjusting for inflation the 2018-19 numbers came in at 3 per cent, down a good 1.5 per cent from the previous year's levels.Rising joblessness could also be one of the reasons behind companies cutting down on their wage bills, analysts say. With job scarcity at 45-year high — as PLFS has found — employers are probably taking advantage of decreasing bargaining power of workers to delay salary hikes.Consequences for the broader economyIn the 4,953 companies in the CMIE database, growth in sales revenue and nominal wage for 2018-19 stood at 9% and 6%, respectively. When adjusted for inflation, these two numbers translate to 3% and 0.53% for growth in sales and salary levels. This slump could have serious consequences for the Indian economy. Combined, the 4,953 companies in the CMIE database paid Rs 10.26 lakh crore worth of salaries in 2018. That roughly translates to almost 13 per cent of India's total private consumption (according to 2018-19 data). It has the potential to trigger a vicious cycle as bad as any in recent memory — scarce jobs and de-growth in sales and salary could spell trouble for demand, which in turn could put a lid on future growth in sales, salary and job generation.Has such a cycle already begun? It isn't certain yet — but after the economy found itself in a five-year trough in the March quarter, red flags have been up for a while.

Eminem’s music publisher Eight Mile Style has filed a lawsuit against Spotify, accusing the service of “blatant copyright infringement” in streaming “Lose Yourself” and other Eminem songs.
As explained by The Hollywood Reporter, the suit is tied Spotify’s implementation of the Music Modernization Act, which was signed into law last year. Under the MMA, Spotify can obtain a compulsory license to stream a song, but it would still need to file a “notice of intention” and pay rightsholders.
However, Eight Mile says, “Spotify did not have any license to reproduce or distribute the Eight Mile Compositions, either direct, affiliate, or compulsory, but acted deceptively by pretending to have compulsory and/or other licenses.”
For example, the complaint describes the service’s treatment of “Lose Yourself” as “the most egregious example of Spotify’s willful infringement,” saying that Spotify placed the song in the Copyright Control category, which is “reserved for songs for which the copyright owner is not known so the song cannot be licensed.”
Eight Mile then characterizes this position as “absurd”: “Spotify, and [the Harry Fox Agency], its agent … certainly knew (and had the easy means to know) that Eight Mile is the copyright owner of ‘Lose Yourself.’ ”
In addition, Eight Mile claims that even though the songs in question have been “streamed on Spotify billions of times,” the service has “not accounted to Eight Mile or paid Eight Mile for these streams but instead remitted random payments of some sort, which only purport to account for a fraction of those streams.”
The complaint also takes issue with protections that Spotify might claim under the MMA, saying that if the law limits Spotify’s liability, then it represents “an unconstitutional denial of due process (both procedural and substantive), and an unconstitutional taking of vested property rights.”
This isn’t the first time Eight Mile has challenged digital music platforms: It sued Apple over copyright issues more than a decade ago, and ultimately settled.
In an emailed statement, Eight Mile’s attorney Richard Busch described this as “a very important lawsuit for all songwriters that raises vital issues for those whose songs stream on Spotify or other Digital Music Providers.”

T-Mobile customers across the U.S. say they can’t make calls or send text messages following an apparent outage — although mobile data appears to be unaffected.
We tested with a T-Mobile phone in the office. Both calls to and from the T-Mobile phone failed. When we tried to send a text message, it said the message could not be sent. The outage began around 3pm PT (6pm ET).
Users took to social media to complain about the outage. It’s not clear how many customers are affected, but users across the U.S. have said they are affected.
A spokesperson for T-Mobile did not immediately comment, but a T-Mobile support account said the cell giant has “engaged our engineers and are working on a resolution.”
T-Mobile is the third largest cell carrier after Verizon (which owns TechCrunch) and AT&T. The company had its proposed $26.5 billion merger with Sprint approved by the Federal Communications Commission, despite a stream of state attorneys general lining up to block the deal.

Most founders who are raising capital look first to traditional equity VCs. But should they? Or should they look to one of the new wave of revenue-based investors?
Revenue-based investing ("RBI") is a new form of VC financing, distinct from the preferred equity structure most VCs use. RBI normally requires founders to pay back their investors with a fixed percentage of revenue until they have finished providing the investor with a fixed return on capital, which they agree upon in advance.

2019 has been a breakout year for podcasting. According to Edison Research's Infinite Dial report, more than half of Americans have now listened to a podcast, and an estimated 32% listen monthly (up from 26% last year). This is the largest yearly increase since this data started being tracked in 2008. Podcast creation also continues to grow, with more than 700,000 podcasts and 29 million podcast episodes, up 27% from last year.
Thanks to this growing listener base, big companies are finally starting to pay attention to the space — Spotify plans to spend $500 million on acquisitions this year, and already acquired content studio Gimlet, tech platform Anchor, and true crime network Parcast for a combined $400 million. In the past week, Google added playable podcasts to search results, Spotify released an analytics dashboard for podcasters and Pandora launched a tool for podcasters to submit their shows.
We've been going to Podcast Movement, the largest annual industry conference, for three years, and have watched the conference grow along with the industry — reaching 3,000 attendees in 2019. Given the increased buzz around the space, we were expecting this year's conference to have a new level of energy and professionalism, and we weren't disappointed. We've summarized five top takeaways from the conference, from why podcast ads are hard to scale to why so many celebrities are launching their own shows.
Rise of celebrity podcasters boosts listenership
We've officially entered the age of celebrity podcasters. After early successes like “WTF with Marc Maron” (2009), Alec Baldwin's “Here's The Thing” (2011) and Anna Faris' “Unqualified” (2015), top talent is flooding into the space. In 2017, 15% of Apple's top 20 most-downloaded podcasts of the year were hosted by celebrities or influencers — this jumped to 32% of the top 25 in 2018. And of all the new shows that launched in 2018, 48% of the top 25 were celebrity-hosted.
Though podcasts are undermonetized compared to other forms of media, talent agents now consider them to be an important part of a well-rounded content strategy. Dan Ferris from CAA tells his clients to think of podcasting as a way of connecting with fans that is "much more intimate than social media." Podcasts also help celebrities find a new audience. Ben Davis from WME said that while his client David Dobrik has a smaller audience on his podcast than on YouTube (1.5 million downloads per episode versus 6 million views per video), the podcast helps him reach a new group of listeners who stumble upon his show on the Apple Podcast charts.
While some podcast veterans grumble about the rise of celebrity talk shows, famous podcasters are good for the industry as a whole. Advertisers are drawn to the space by the opportunity to get to access A-list talent at lower prices. One recent example is Endeavor Audio's fiction show “Blackout,” which starred Rami Malek, who was fresh off an Oscar win. Endeavor's head of sales, Charlie Emerson, said brands might have to sign a "seven or eight-figure deal" to advertise alongside Malek's content in other forms of media. Other podcasters also benefit from new listeners brought into the medium by their favorite stars — a Westwood One survey in fall 2018 found that 60% of podcast listeners report discovering shows via social media, where celebrities and influencers have huge existing audiences to push content to.
Creator backlash against "walled garden" apps
Paid listening apps represent a fairly small percentage of podcast listenership, with production platform Anchor estimating that Apple Podcasts and Spotify control more than 70% of listenership. A venture-backed company called Luminary is trying to change this — it raised $100 million to launch a "Netflix for podcasts" this spring. Consumers pay $7.99/month to access Luminary-exclusive shows alongside podcasts that are free on other apps. Because podcasts have RSS feeds, distributors like Luminary can easily grab free content and put it behind a paywall. The platform, not the creator, benefits from this monetization.
Within days of Luminary's launch, prominent podcasters and media companies (The New York Times, Gimlet and more) requested their shows be removed from the app. It's interesting to note that YouTube has a similar premium plan — for $11.99/month, users can access and download ad-free videos. Unlike Luminary, however, YouTube, pays creators a cut of the revenue from these subscriptions based on how frequently their content is viewed.
Unsurprisingly, creator sentiment is more positive toward platforms like Spotify and Pandora . Though these companies do make money from premium subscribers who listen to podcasts, creators can choose whether or not to submit their shows. And podcasters benefit from making their shows discoverable to the existing user base of these platforms, which already dominate "earshare." Spotify alone has 232 million MAUs, which dwarfs the 90 million people in the U.S. who listen to a podcast monthly.
Industry anxiety around maintaining quality at scale
Podcast ad revenue has been scaling quickly, with $480 million in spend last year and a projected $680 million this year. Over the past four years, ad revenue has scaled at a 65% CAGR, and this growth is expected to continue. In its early days, the podcast ad market has largely been driven by D2C brands — you've probably heard hundreds of Casper, Blue Apron and Madison Reed ads. However, bigger brands are also starting to enter podcasting (Geico, Capital One and Progressive made the top 10 list for June 2019) due to the growing audience scale and increased precision around targeting and attribution.
While many attendees were excited by the massive growth in ad revenue, others worried that it may kill what makes podcasting special. They're particularly concerned that podcasts may go the way of online video, with annoying, generic, low CPM ads. Podcast hosts typically read their own ads, and are often true fans of the product — they share personal stories instead of reciting brand talking points. This results in premium CPMs compared to most digital media — AdvertiseCast's 2019 survey found an average CPM of $18 for a 30-second podcast ad and $25 for a 60-second ad, more than 2x the average CPM on other digital platforms.
While these ads are effective, they're time-consuming and expensive to produce. Big brands interested in podcast ads often expect to reuse radio spots — they aren't used to the process of crafting and approving a host-read ad that may only reach 10,000 listeners. Podcasters, meanwhile, value their trust with listeners and don't want to spam them with loud, unoriginal radio ads. The tension between maintaining the quality of ads while scaling quantity was an underlying theme of most monetization discussions, and industry veterans disagree on how it will play out.
Podcasts are still undermonetized — but there is hope!
Despite the growth in ad revenue and relatively high CPMs, the industry is significantly undermonetized. Using data from Nielsen, IAB and Edison, we calculated that podcasts monetize through advertisements at only $0.01 per listener hour — less than 10 times the rate of radio. Podcast monetization per listener hour has increased over the past year, up 25% by our calculations, but still substantially lags all other forms of media.
Why are podcasts so undermonetized? Unlike many other forms of media, the dominant distribution platform (Apple Podcasts) has no ad marketplace. Creators have historically had to approach brands themselves or sign with podcast networks to construct custom ad deals, and the "long tail" of podcasters were unable to monetize. This is finally changing. Anchor, which reported in January that it powers 40% of new podcasts, has an ad marketplace that has doubled the number of podcasts that are running ads. Other popular platforms like Radio Public have launched programs for small podcasters to opt-in to ad placements.
The second major hurdle in monetization is attribution. Podcasts have historically monetized through direct response campaigns — a podcaster provides a special URL or promo code for listeners to use when making a purchase. However, many people listen to podcasts when exercising or driving, and can't write down the promo code or visit the URL immediately. These listeners might remember the product and make a purchase later, but the podcaster won't get the attribution. Thomas Mancusi of Audioboom estimated that this happens in 50-60% of purchases driven by podcast ads.
Startups are trying to bring better adtech into podcasting to fix this issue. Chartable is one example — the company installs trackers to match a listener's IP address with a purchaser's IP address, allowing podcasters to claim attribution for listeners who don't use their URL or promo code. Chartable currently runs on 10,000 shows, and the early results are so promising that ad agencies expect to see higher CPMs and significantly more spend in the space.
Podcast fans of the future ≠ podcast fans today
As podcasting grows, the listener base is diversifying. Edison Research looked into data on "rookie" listeners (listening for six months or less) and "veteran" listeners (listening for 3+ years), and found significant demographic differences. Only 37% of veterans are female, compared to 53% of rookies. While the plurality of veterans (43%) are age 35-54, 54% of rookies are age 12-34. Rookies are also 1.6x more likely to say they most often listen to podcasts on Spotify, Pandora or SoundCloud (43% versus 27% of veterans). And social media is an important way that rookies discover podcasts — 52% have found a podcast from video and 46% from audio on social media, compared to 41% and 37% for veterans.
These new listeners will have a profound impact on the future of podcasting, in both the type of content produced and the way it's distributed. Industry experts are already noting significant new demand for female-hosted podcasts, as well as audio dramas that appeal to young people looking for a fast-paced, suspenseful story. They're advising podcasters to share clips of their content on social media, and to leverage broader listening platforms like YouTube and SoundCloud for distribution.
International markets also represent an enormous opportunity for growth. Most podcast listeners today live in the U.S. or China, but content producers are starting to see significant demand elsewhere. Castbox's Valentina Kaledina said that many fans abroad have resorted to listening in their non-native language, with the top 100 shows in each country comprising a mix of English and local language. Adonde Media's Martina Castro, who recently conducted the first listener survey on Spanish-language podcast fans, said that 53% of the survey's 2,100 respondents reported listening to podcasts in English — and only 20% of them use Apple Podcasts.
Larger podcast producers are beginning to translate shows for non-English-speaking markets. Wondery CEO Hernan Lopez announced at the conference that the company's hit show Dr. Death is now available in seven languages. Lopez noted that it was an expensive process, and he doesn't expect the shows to generate profit in the near future. However, he believes that Wondery will eventually see a significant return from investing in the development of new podcast markets — and if they do, other podcast companies will likely follow in their footsteps.
Splunk, the publicly traded data processing and analytics company, today announced that it has acquired SignalFx for a total price of about $1.05 billion. Approximately 60% of this will be in cash and 40% in Splunk common stock. The companies expect the acquisition to close in the second half of 2020.
SignalFx, which emerged from stealth in 2015, provides real-time cloud monitoring solutions, predictive analytics and more. Upon close, Splunk argues, this acquisition will allow it to become a leader “in observability and APM for organizations at every stage of their cloud journey, from cloud-native apps to homegrown on-premises applications.”
Indeed, the acquisition will likely make Splunk a far stronger player in the cloud space as it expands its support for cloud-native applications and the modern infrastructures and architectures those rely on.
Ahead of the acquisition, SignalFx had raised a total of $178.5 million, according to Crunchbase, including a recent Series E round. Investors include General Catalyst, Tiger Global Management, Andreessen Horowitz and CRV. Its customers include the likes of AthenaHealth, Change.org, Kayak, NBCUniversal and Yelp.
“Data fuels the modern business, and the acquisition of SignalFx squarely puts Splunk in position as a leader in monitoring and observability at massive scale,” said Doug Merritt, president and CEO, Splunk, in today’s announcement. “SignalFx will support our continued commitment to giving customers one platform that can monitor the entire enterprise application lifecycle. We are also incredibly impressed by the SignalFx team and leadership, whose expertise and professionalism are a strong addition to the Splunk family.”
Porsche’s venture arm has acquired a minority stake in TriEye, an Israeli startup that’s working on a sensor technology to help vehicle driver-assistance and self-driving systems see better in poor weather conditions like dust, fog and rain.
The strategic investment is part of a Series A financing round that has been expanded to $19 million. The round was initially led by Intel Capital and Israeli venture fund Grove Ventures. Porsche has held shares in Grove Ventures since 2017.
TriEye has raised $22 million to date. Terms of Porsche’s investment were not disclosed.
The additional funding will be used for ongoing product development, operations and hiring talent, according to TriEye.
The advanced driver-assistance systems found in most new vehicles today typically rely on a combination of cameras and radar to “see.” Autonomous vehicle systems, which are being developed and tested by dozens of companies such as Argo AI, Aptiv, Aurora, Cruise and Waymo, have a more robust suite of sensors that include light detection and ranging radar (lidar) along with cameras and ultrasonic sensors.
For either of these systems to function properly, they need to be able to see in all conditions. This pursuit of sensor technology has sparked a boom in startups hoping to tap into demand from automakers and companies working on self-driving car systems.
TriEye is one of them. The premise of TriEye is to solve the low visibility problem created by poor weather conditions. The startup’s co-founders argue that fusing existing sensors such as radar, lidar and standard cameras don’t solve this problem.
TriEye, which was founded in 2017, believes the answer is through short-wave infrared (SWIR) sensors. The startup said it has developed an HD SWIR camera that is a smaller size, higher resolution and cheaper than other technologies. The camera is due to launch in 2020.
The technology is based on advanced nano-photonics research by Uriel Levy, a TriEye co-founder and CTO who is also a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
The company says its secret sauce is its “unique” semiconductor design that will make it possible to manufacture SWIR HD cameras at a “fraction of their current cost.”
TriEye’s technology was apparently good enough to get Porsche’s attention.
Michael Steiner, a Porsche AG board member focused on R&D, said the technology was promising, as was the team, which is comprised of people with expertise in deep learning, nano-photonics and semiconductor components.
"We see great potential in this sensor technology that paves the way for the next generation of driver assistance systems and autonomous driving functions,” Steiner said in a statement. “SWIR can be a key element: it offers enhanced safety at a competitive price."
A good, solid duffel bag is a mainstay for many travelers — especially those who like packing up a car for a weekend away, or frequent flyers who disdain the thought of checking a bag. Peak Design introduced its own take on the duffel bag this year, with a couple of different twists on the concept. The Peak Design Travel Duffel 35L is the most fundamental of the company’s options, and it delivers a lot of packing space and support for Peak’s packing tools if you want to get real serious about space optimization.
I’m an unabashed fan of Peak Design’s Everyday camera bags, its capture clips and basically its entire ecosystem. This is a company that you can tell things deeply about the problems it’s aiming to solve for its customers — because they’re the problems shared by the company’s founders themselves. The Travel Duffel is actually probably a bit more mainstream and less specialized than most of their offerings, but that only makes it more appealing, not less.
You’ll find the same weatherproof nylon coating in this bag that Peak uses in its other packs, and it’s a very durable material that also looks great both up close and at a distance. If there’s a complaint here, it’s that the black color I prefer tends to pretty easily pick up dust, but it also wipes or washes off just as easily. The heavy-duty nylon canvas shell should also stand up to the elements well, and the zipper is the especially weather sealed kind, plus there’s a waterproof bottom liner in case you’re less than careful about where you drop your pack while en route.
The Duffel includes both hand straps and a longer padded shoulder strap, and the unique connector hardware system means you can reposition the straps in a number of ways to suit your carrying preferences. The hand straps double as shoulder straps for wearing it like a backpack and though this is a bit tight for my larger frame, it’s still a way to quickly alleviate shoulder or hand strain for longer treks with the bag in tow. The connectors here are also super smart — there are no moving parts, they just snap on and off the sewn-in loops placed around the bag — which means added durability and ease of use.

Plenty of pockets inside and out give you lots of divided storage options, and there’s also a security loop feature on the main zipper to make it much harder for someone to quickly yank the bag open and grab what’s inside if they’re targeting a quick theft opportunity. A dedicated ID card holder is a nice touch that tells you exactly who this is ideal for, too.
As I alluded to above, there’s also support for the rest of Peak’s packing tools. I’ve got their small camera cube in the bag width-wise in the photo below, and it should be able to fit up to three of these in this orientation. Peak also offers packing cubes, dop kits and more, and you can use the slide hooks provided with those with internal elastic attachment points if you want to ensure things won’t shift around. But the best part about this bag is that it has everything you need in a straightforward duffel out of the box — the rest of the packing tools are totally optional and don’t take away form its fundamental effectiveness at all.
The 35L carrying capacity of this bag is perfect for a weekend trip, or even a few days longer if you’re an economical packer. At $129.95, it’s actually very reasonable for a high-quality duffel bag, too, and definitely one of the better bargains in the Peak lineup when it comes to value for the money.
Nearly 200 startups have just graduated from the prestigious San Francisco startup accelerator Y Combinator . The flock of companies are now free to proceed company-building with a fresh $150,000 check and three-months full of tips and tricks from industry experts.
As usual, we sent several reporters to YC’s latest demo day to take notes on each company and pick our favorites. But there were many updates to the YC structure this time around and new trends we spotted from the ground that we’ve yet to share.
The International Space Station is now more than ready for crew-carrying spacecraft flown by commercial companies to pay it a visit: The second planned International Dock Adapter (IDA) was installed on the Space Station during a spacewalk by NASA astronauts Nick Hague and Andrew Morgan earlier today.
The dock adapter is actually IDA-3, as the first IDA was lost during the SpaceX launch failure of its CRS-7 mission on June 28, 2015. IDA-2, which was intended to be the second installed on ISS, instead became the first and was delivered in July 2016 during the SpaceX CRS-9 resupply mission.
IDA-2 has already proven effective, too: It received its first docking vehicle on March 3 of this year, when SpaceX’s Crew Dragon Demo-1 test vehicle used the automated docking procedure designed for this adapter to demonstrate how it will work eventually when crew are on board.
IDA-3 is the second working dock adapter that uses this automated procedure, which makes it so that vehicles arriving at the ISS don’t have to be caught and guided in manually by astronauts with the help of the station’s Canadarm2 robotic arm. The automated procedure is designed as an industry standard of sorts, and should mean that any commercial crew craft, from SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, to Boeing’s CST-100, and any other potential future craft, can easily and automatically dock with the ISS to transfer over passengers and cargo.
Boeing is the company that was contracted to design and build these docking adapters. Each weigh about 1,150 pounds, and they’re about 42 inches high and 63 inches wide, which means it’s a bit of a tight squeeze for crew to come through (these aren’t big step-through passageways like you sometimes see in movies).
Having both the IDAs installed on the Space Station is key milestone in the commercial crew program, but there are still plenty of hurdles left to clear — including the first test flights of commercial Crew vehicles with astronauts on board.
[Update: the Music tab has been relocated]Google’s Play Store has gotten a big visual makeover, the company announced today, with changes that include a cleaner look-and-feel, new navigation, an easier way to to see app information and more. Most notably, however, is that Google has taken a page from Apple’s playbook with the priority given to its two distinct sections for apps and games. It has also removed the “Music” tab from the top-level navigation, likely ahead of planned changes to Google Play Music and YouTube Music.
Though the redesign is in keeping with Google’s Material Design philosophy, it’s hard to miss Apple’s influence here — from the brighter, whiter and cleaner layout to the new navigation and updated app detail page layouts, among other things.
With Apple’s huge App Store revamp in 2017, the company made several changes to refocus user attention away from top charts and rankings to editorial content, stories and tips, recommendations and curated collections. As a part of this redesign, it created two separate tabs for Apps and Games in the App Store app’s main navigation to better direct users to the type of app content they wanted to browse.
The Play Store had already broken out Apps and Games before today, but they had been part of a much larger navigational element at the top of the home page.
The new design now relocates the Play Store’s main navigation to the bottom of the screen, just like on the iOS App Store. It also distills navigation to just four tabs: Games, Apps, Movies & TV and Books. (Music is gone).
Google says its decision to create two main tabs for apps and games will help it to “better serve users the right kind of content.”
Within the Games and Apps sections, users can browse into other sections, including Google’s personalized “For You” suggestions and Top Charts, and more. Here, you’ll find the same sections the Play Store had before (like “New,” “Events,” “Premium,” etc.) — they’ve just been relocated within the new tabs instead of existing as a second-level navigation bar on the Play Store homepage.
When the user finds an app or game they’re interested in, the updated store listing page layout will now surface richer app information at the top of the page and a bigger call-to-action button (e.g. “Install”).
This, too, is similar to iOS, where key details about the app or game — like its rating or age range — are at the top of this app detail page.
Some more screenshots of the new Google Play UI, this time with working reviews and music store. Only UI bug is the toolbar disappearing (that I can see), and it's *fairly* stable (but still crashes a fair amount), might be something at I/O next week? pic.twitter.com/7TmTH2TYMb
As for the Music tab’s relocation, Google already confirmed it was planning to replace Google Play Music with YouTube Music, and shut down Google Play’s artist hub this April in preparation for that. With the removal of the Music tab from the new Play Store, the completion of this merger appears to be imminent.
Update: The Music tab has been relocated, says Google… it’s a bit buried now
Attention fans: The music section has moved, but don't fret, it should only make your jam sesh easier. pic.twitter.com/9x7WpHAp6k
In other words, not only is this a non-exclusive game, it comes from an iOS-first shop. Sure, it’s a great game. But that’s also a pretty weird pick on Google’s part.
The Google Play Store has more than two billion monthly active users, Google said in its announcement. The new version of the Play Store is rolling out now.

Twitter’s ongoing, long-term efforts to make conversations easier to follow and engage with on its platform is getting a boost with the company’s latest acquihire. The company has picked up the team behind Lightwell, a startup that had built a set of developer tools to build interactive, narrative apps, for an undisclosed sum.Lightwell’s founder and CEO, Suzanne Xie, is becoming a director of product leading Twitter’s Conversations initiative, with the rest of her small four-person team joining her on the conversations project.
(Sidenote: Sara Haider, who had been leading the charge on rethinking the design of Conversations on Twitter, most recently through the release of twttr, Twitter’s newish prototyping app, announced that she would be moving on to a new project at the company after a short break. I understand twttr will continue to be used to openly test conversation tweaks and other potential changes to how the app works. )
The Lightwell/Twitter news was announced late yesterday both by Lightwell itself and Twitter’s VP of product Keith Coleman. A Twitter spokesperson also confirmed the deal to TechCrunch in a short statement today: “We are excited to welcome Suzanne and her team to Twitter to help drive forward the important work we are doing to serve the public conversation,” he said. Interestingly, Twitter is on a product hiring push it seems. Other recent hires Coleman noted were Other recent product hires include Angela Wise and Tom Hauburger. Coincidentally, both joined from autonomous companies, respectively Waymo and Voyage.
To be clear, this is more acqui-hire than hire: only the Lightwell team (of what looks like three people) is joining Twitter. The Lightwell product will no longer be developed, but it is not going away, either. Xie noted in a separate Medium post that apps that have already been built (or plan to be built) on the platform will continue to work. It will also now be free to use.
Lightwell originally started life in 2012 as Hullabalu, as one of the many companies producing original-content interactive children’s stories for smartphones and tablets. In a sea of children-focused storybook apps, Hullabalu’s stories stood out not just because of the distinctive cast of characters that the startup had created, but for how the narratives were presented: part book, part interactive game, the stories engaged children and moved narratives along by getting the users to touch and drag elements across the screen.
After some years, Hullabalu saw an opportunity to package its technology and make it available as a platform for all developers, to be used not just by other creators of children’s content, but advertisers and more. It seems the company shifted at that time to make Lightwell its main focus.
The Hullabalu apps remained live on the App Store, even when the company moved on to focus on Lightwell. However, they hadn’t been updated in two years’ time. Xie says they will remain as is.
In its startup life, the company went through YCombinator, TechStars, and picked up some $6.5 million in funding (per Crunchbase), from investors that included Joanne Wilson, SV Angel, Vayner, Spark Labs, Great Oak, Scout Ventures and more.
If turning Hullabalu into Lightwell was a pivot, then the exit to Twitter can be considered yet another interesting shift in how talent and expertise optimized for one end can be repurposed to meet another.
One of Twitter’s biggest challenges over the years has been trying to create a way to make conversations (also narratives of a kind) easy to follow — both for those who are power users, and for those who are not and might otherwise easily be put off from using the product.
The crux of the problem has been that Twitter’s DNA is about real-time rivers of chatter that flow in one single feed, while conversations by their nature linger around a specific topic and become hard to follow when there are too many people talking. Trying to build a way to fit the two concepts together has foxed the company for a long time now.
At its best, bringing in a new team from the outside will potentially give Twitter a fresh perspective on how to approach conversations on the platform, and the fact that Lightwell has been thinking about creative ways to present narratives gives them some cred as a group that might come up completely new concepts for presenting conversations.
At a time when it seems that the conversation around Conversations had somewhat stagnated, it’s good to see a new chapter opening up.
Earlier this year, Google said it would transition all Hangouts users on G Suite to Hangouts Chat and Meet by October 2019 and then retire the classic version of Hangouts. But a lot of G Suite users love their classic Hangouts, so Google has now revised Hangouts’ retirement date to “no sooner than June 2020.” That leaves the door open for a later date, too, and the company says it will provide a “more definitive date” at some point in the future.
It’s worth stressing that this new timeline is about Hangouts for paying G Suite users, but it will also influence the consumer timeline. What exactly is happening to Hangouts for consumers remains a bit unclear, though, given that Google’s original consumer messaging strategy failed after the disappointment that was Allo.
But here is what we know: Earlier this year, Google said that it wanted to transition consumers over to a free version of Hangouts Chat and Meet after the G Suite transition. A Google spokesperson told me this plan remains in place and it will start after the G Suite transition.
As for G Suite users, Google plans to make the transition for G Suite users easier as it looks to move them over to the new platform. Admins can already jump on an accelerated timeline and disable classic Hangouts right now (but they still need an invitation from Google to do so).

DoorDash seems to be very interested in self-driving technology — not only did it acquire Scotty Labs (a startup enabling people to remotely control self-driving cars), it also brought on the two co-founders of Lvl5, which was creating high-resolution maps for autonomous driving.
"We'll share more updates in the near future but for now, we're really excited to be part of the amazing DoorDash family and looking forward to building something magical together,” Scotty Labs co-founder Tobenna Arodiogbu wrote on in a blog post.
Apple, Google and Mozilla have taken the rare step of blocking an untrusted certificate issued by the Kazakhstan government, which critics say it forced its citizens to install as part of an effort to monitor their internet traffic.

An unprotected MoviePass database included both customer cards (those are the debit cards used to purchase movie tickets) and personal credit card numbers.
The data set isn't for commercial use, but Waymo’s definition of “research” is fairly broad, and includes researchers at other companies as well as academics.
Popular enterprise news and research site The New Stack is coming to TechCrunch Sessions: Enterprise on September 5 for a special Pancake & Podcast session with live Q&A. (And we’re dead serious about the pancakes.)
Multiple reports this week claimed Google had quietly rolled out a more in-depth app review process to all developers — changes designed to keep the Play Store safer from spam, malware and copycat apps. Those reports are inaccurate, Google tells TechCrunch. Instead, the company is giving itself more time to review apps from new, unestablished developers on the Play Store, as previously announced, but this hasn’t been extended to all developers.
Concerns about these so-called “unannounced changes” stemmed from a blog post by Choice of Games, which wrote that “all new apps” would be getting an additional review, slowing down app approvals. It claimed new apps would require at least three days for review, and this now included existing developers.
The post cited a conversation with Google Support as the source for its claims.
This led to a ton of confusion, as the development shop behind the post was well-established, having been on the Play Store since 2010 and would have been exempt from Google’s policy of increased reviews for new developers.
As it turns out, it appears there was miscommunication between Google Play Store developer support and the developer, according to the chat transcript that was published. The support person, “Liz,” was alerting the developer to the new policy Google announced in April, which detailed increased review times for Play Store newcomers. She didn’t appear to understand that she was speaking with a developer who had published on Google Play for nearly a decade.
Android Police also picked up the news, writing that Google had “quietly instigated a more involved review process that impacts every app and update.”
Reddit and Hacker News also weighed in. In addition to the reported changes, developers were concerned there was now no way to schedule new app releases through the Timed Publishing feature. (That’s also not true — developers can publish to a closed testing track, then use Timed Publishing to go live to the public.)
A Google Developer Relations team member stepped in to clear things up on Reddit, and we’ve confirmed with Google that his responses were accurate.
“We will soon be taking more time (days, not weeks) to review apps by developers that don't yet have a track record with us. This will allow us to do more thorough checks before approving apps to go live in the store and will help us make even fewer inaccurate decisions on developer accounts.”
Google began notifying developers directly in the Play Console in June that new apps by developers without a track record will take a couple of days longer to review. Google says that, since this change, it’s already seen a meaningful increase in the number of harmful apps blocked by Play even before they are published.
It’s not clear why the developer relations support person miscommunicated this information to the developer in question, but it points to a training issue on Google’s part.
It’s also unclear why the established developer’s app was held up in app review, beyond it just being a mistake on Google’s part.
Unfortunately for Google, Play Store developers have come to expect a speedy review process, so any delays feel like unnecessary friction.
That process doesn’t always work, though. Only days ago, dozens of Android apps disguised as harmless photo editors and games were discovered to actually be adware. This follows similar news from January, when 85 apps were found to contain adware… and in May, when adware was discovered in some 200 apps totaling 150+ million installs… and, news from last November, when malware was found across more than a dozen apps with half a million installs… and so on.
While it would make sense for Google to increase its review of all apps, given its inability to address this problem, that was not the case here.

The first day of work at a new job can be very stressful. The unfamiliar surroundings and onslaught of new material can cause new hires some degree of discomfort. But sometimes the atmosphere at the new company can be welcoming and can help counteract the stress.
Different companies have their own traditions to help make this transition period more comfortable and memorable for new hires. Some of these traditions include:
Team-building day trips for new hires
Breakfast with the CEO
Tours of the best cafes, parks, and other spots in the neighborhood
Office "quests" (or some other gamification of onboarding)
Personalized onboarding programs or interactive company academies
Usually, only employees can experience these traditions. But there's one new-hire tradition that has become extremely popular and often highly publicized: the “welcome kit”.
Welcome kits usually contain a hodgepodge of items that employees will need on the job (pens, notebooks, books, etc.) and things to make employees feel welcome (clothing, stickers, water bottles, or more unusual items — often with the company name or logo on them).
To get a sense of how different companies handle their kits, we talked to four successful startups about their welcome kits in the article below, followed by our look at a dozen more:
This article is based on the personal welcome kit collection of Vladimir Polo, founder of AcademyOcean. AcademyOcean is a tool for interactive onboarding and training (and Vladimir Polo is a fan of welcome kits).
Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of markets, apps and services, has been at Apple since 2003. She worked with the company’s co-founder Steve Jobs, and has witnessed such milestones as the launch of the iPhone and the iPad. Prescott will be coming to TechCrunch Sessions: Enterprise in San Francisco on September 5 to discuss Apple’s enterprise strategy.
Prescott has been closely involved in that from the earliest days of the iPhone, and as she told TechCrunch in a 2018 article on Apple’s enterprise strategy, the company was thinking about the enterprise as a potential market from the start. “Early on we engaged with businesses and IT to understand their needs, and have added enterprise features with every major software release,” she said at the time.
When you think about it, it was in fact the iPhone and the iPad that led to the Consumerization of IT and Bring Your Own Device movements, two huge trends in enterprise IT that began in the 2011 timeframe. Later the company helped grow the business further by partnering with such enterprise stalwarts as IBM, SAP, Cisco, GE and most recently Salesforce along with systems integrators like Deloitte and Accenture. Today, the company offers a range of business tools including Apple Business Chat and Apple Business Manager, an IT management tool for managing Macs, iPhones and iPads and the apps that run on them.
All of that adds up to robust enterprise strategy, and Prescott will discuss all of that and more with TechCrunch editors. We’ll dive into Apple’s history in the enterprise and what it’s doing today to enhance that part of its business.
In all, Prescott has over 25 years of technology industry experience. Before joining Apple in 2003, she worked for Adobe where she had a range of engineering, marketing and management roles. Her last position before joining Apple in 2003 was Vice President of product management and marketing in Adobe’s Creative Professional Solutions group.
BuzzFeed is offering readers a new approach to finding content that fits the way they’re feeling right now.
It’s not the boring old approach of following a link on social media or search, or of typing BuzzFeed.com into your browser. Instead, on MoodFeed, readers can identify their mood, then they’ll get a list of articles that match those feelings.
There are currently six options — curious, stressed, bored, nostalgic, joyful or hungry. If you select “curious,” you’ll see a list of BuzzFeed posts about strange facts, life hacks and the like. If, on the other hand, you go with “nostalgic,” you’ll get lots of headlines about pop culture history. And if you’re not sure, you can just give the mood wheel a spin and see what it lands on.
Talia Halperin, BuzzFeed’s vice president of brand management, described this as an experiment in “getting our audience engaged and excited in a non-traditional way.” The team apparently created these recommendations by first identifying the main mood options, then “reverse-engineering” which articles would be a good fit.
And while BuzzFeed’s never offered this kind of interface before, Halperin argued that the broader strategy is one that the organization uses “all the time, in a curated, audience-focused way” — when the team is sharing and promoting articles, it’s thinking about moods and associated identities.
In fact, the BuzzFeed team has actually built AI tools to help with this process, automating the ability to identify which BuzzFeed stories should be posted on which BuzzFeed pages, when “evergreen” stories should be re-promoted and at what time headlines should be shared.
In the case of MoodFeed, Halperin made it sound like this is very much an experiment, with the company still figuring out things like “how often we should refresh it, what our strategy is around that.”
At the same time, she said there’s plenty of room for expansion.
“This could scale in a really interesting way,” she added. “You may have noticed that there are only six moods, but of course, there are several different moods that come along with certain events [so we’re interested] in really being able expand to expand the moods at different times of the year.”
Violation of traffic rules to pinch hard from September 1 As per the amended Act, a fine of Rs 10,000 will be imposed if one fails to give way to emergency vehicles. The same fine will be imposed if a driver is driving despite being disqualified.
