Marcel the monkey from 'Friends' is set to be a TV star again

Posted: 18 Aug 2019 07:10 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

Marcel was always bound for great things.

It's been a lot of years since we spent any time with Ross Geller's pet capuchin monkey on Friends — she's actually a female named Katie with her own IMDb page. But that may change once Y: The Last Man, a Brian K. Vaughn comic book adapted for TV, hits FX.

It's not yet certain that Katie will make the final cut, but FX CEO John Landgraf confirmed it was her during the Television Critics Association's summer press tour, per The Hollywood Reporter. He first noticed — and recognized — Katie as he looked through early cuts of Y.

In a subsequent check-in with Katie's trainer, THR was able to confirm her involvement in the show. It's been a long time since that first season of Friends, which premiered in 1994, but Katie — who must have been so young back then! — is apparently in her mid-to-late 20s. Read more...

Why Tesla should reconsider its stance against heads-up displays

Posted: 18 Aug 2019 05:00 AM PDT

After eight hours of driving through heavy traffic, re-routed directions to avoid congestion, and a close call with the highway patrol, I was more than grateful for the bright glow of information projected onto my windshield.

The 2019 Lincoln Navigator I was driving from New York City to northern Vermont had a "heads/head-up display," or HUD, with navigation directions, driving speed, speed limits, the time, temperature, and other information superimposed onto the road ahead. The display worked just as well during the day or night, showing me which exit I should take or the speed I should drive. It immediately became an essential driving tool. Read more...

Don't make calls with Siri or Google or you could get scammed

Posted: 17 Aug 2019 03:11 PM PDT

TwitterFacebook

If you've ever used Siri or Google to call a business, you could be in danger of falling victim to a new scam.

Phone calls made with voice assistants could open people up to scammers, who have found a clever new way to exploit our growing dependence on Siri and Google. That's according to the Better Business Bureau, which issued a warning about the scheme.

Here's how it goes down, according to the BBB: you need to call a business, like an airline, but you don't know what number to call. So you do what many of us do and ask Google or Siri to "call [business name]" for you you.

But instead of calling your bank or your airline, the assistant calls a scammer impersonating someone from the company, who will try to trick you into sending them money. Read more...

Google Assistant's abilities dominate Siri and Alexa, research shows

Posted: 17 Aug 2019 02:39 PM PDT

TwitterFacebook

Alexa and Siri aren't nearly as capable as Google Assistant, according to new research.

Research firm Loup Ventures recently published its semi-annual report on smartphone-based digital assistants, and the results once again show that Google is significantly ahead of Amazon and Apple.

To find out which assistant was best, analysts Gene Munster and Will Thompson asked each one the same 800 questions across five different categories and graded them on understanding and accuracy.

According to their findings, Google Assistant understood every single query they asked and answered correctly 92.9 percent of the time. Siri understood 99.8 percent of questions and answered 83.1 percent correctly, while Alexa understood 99.9 percent and answered correctly 79.8 percent of the time. To put that in perspective, that means Alexa answered approximately 162 questions incorrectly while Google got just 57 wrong.  Read more...

Stunning Hubble photo catches an aging star's giant ring of space gas

Posted: 17 Aug 2019 02:33 PM PDT

TwitterFacebook

Just like people, stars get old. Also like people, aging stars release a lot of gas.

This newly captured image from the Hubble Space Telescope shows us NGC 2022, a planetary nebula in the Orion constellation. Yes, it's a star and not a planet; it's called that because of the rounded shaped produced by the star's expanding ring of gas.

As stars get older, they get larger and take on more of a reddish glow. As that process plays out, the star sheds its outer layers into the surrounding space. As its mass shrinks the star's core gets hotter, which in turn releases more ultraviolet light.

Those UV rays create a distinctive glow in the surrounding space as they interact with the gases that have been released. That's how we end up with this picturesque scene. Read more...

Nintendo isn't officially upgrading recently bought Switch consoles

Posted: 17 Aug 2019 02:11 PM PDT

TwitterFacebook

The slightly refreshed Nintendo Switch is now officially available, but reports that Nintendo is handing out free hardware upgrades aren't accurate.

The newly released Switch is the same device that launched back in 2017, only this one sports an updated CPU that's more efficient, resulting in improved battery life. Both versions of the console are on shelves now, and a Friday report from Polygon had suggested that Nintendo was giving people who recently purchased the older version a free upgrade to the new one.

Nintendo says that's not the case — not officially, at least — in a statement provided to Mashable on Saturday. Read more...

French soccer match halted after crowd starts homophobic chant

Posted: 17 Aug 2019 11:54 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

A Ligue 2 soccer match between AS Nancy Lorraine and Le Mans FC was temporarily halted Friday night after some Nancy fans began a homophobic chant, NBC Sports reported.

Referee Mehdi Mokhtari stopped the match and players pleaded with fans to stop. The game was put on hold for about a minute and resumed after fans stopped their problematic singing.

This is the first time a professional soccer match has been stopped in France for this reason, and the decision to temporarily halt play fell in line with one of France's new rules against discrimination, FIFA employee Alex Stone said on Twitter.

Both Roxana Mărăcineanu, the French sport minister, and Marlène Schiappa, France's secretary of state for gender equality, commended the referee on Twitter for taking a stand against the offending fans. Read more...

The next Apple Watch could come in two new finishes

Posted: 17 Aug 2019 10:38 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

We're still a few weeks away from Apple's next big product launch, but more clues about the new lineup of gadgets are starting to emerge — including the Apple Watch.

The forthcoming Apple Watch will be available in two new finishes, according to images uncovered in the latest watchOS beta, spotted by iHelpBR. The blog published photos from the watchOS startup screen, which indicate the next Apple Watch will be available in titanium and ceramic cases.

Apple has used a ceramic finish in the past, the last time being the Apple Watch Series 3, but this would be the first time the company has made it in titanium. Both options are likely to be higher-priced Apple Watch Edition models, which use more premium materials than the regular-priced, aluminum Apple Watch.  Read more...

Tesla is testing a low-priced 'Rent Solar' program for homes, but read the fine print

Posted: 17 Aug 2019 10:21 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

Tesla has struggled so far to make residential solar power a reality, and company executives are no doubt hoping that a new "Rent Solar" program will change that.

It's a pretty straightforward deal: for as little as $50 monthly, you get all the necessary panels and other hardware, plus installation, support, and ongoing maintenance. There's no up front cost for the installation and no long-term contract commitment.

There's one big catch, however: if you decide to end your commitment and want the solar panels and hardware removed, you're paying Tesla $1,500 to get that done. You're also going to pay the same amount if you start with an option that's too large for your needs and decide to downsize. Read more...

Suicide Bomber Kills 63 At Afghan Wedding Reception

Posted: 17 Aug 2019 09:18 PM PDT

Reuters: Toll from suicide blast at Afghan wedding 63 dead and 182 hurt: ministry

KABUL (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed 63 people and wounded 182 in an attack on a wedding reception in the Afghan capital on Saturday night, the interior ministry said.

The Taliban denied responsibility for the blast at a west Kabul wedding hall, in a minority Shi'ite neighborhood, packed with people celebrating a marriage.

The attack came as the Taliban and the United States are trying to negotiate an agreement on the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan in exchange for a Taliban commitment on security and peace talks with the U.S.-backed government.

U.S. Navy Wants New Submarine Weapons

FOX News/Warrior Maven: Navy sets sights on new submarine weapons

The Navy has begun building new weapons to massively increase attack options for its Virginia-class attack submarine, a move that is expected to change the mission scope for the boats and enable more extensive offensive strike possibilities, improving the Navy's armed defense of its surface fleet.

The weapons increase, which has been progressing with prototyping for several years now, will lengthen the submarines with a new section to rev up the firepower from 12 to 40 on-board Tomahawk missiles. Speaking at the Navy League's Sea Air Space Symposium earlier this year, Capt. Christopher Hanson, Program Manager, Virginia Class Submarine, indicated that formal construction of Block V will begin this year and continue through at least 2023. Most recently, the construction efforts have recently been extended through a "follow-on" deal between the Navy and BAE systems.

In addition to an increased weapons capacity, the Block 5 Virginia submarines will be equipped with a host of new mission-performing technologies.

Iraq Bans All Unathorized Fllights Following Mysterious Blasts Blamed On Israel

Times Of Israel: Iraq takes security measures following mysterious blasts blamed on Israel

Unauthorized flights banned, munitions depots moved outside major cities after deadly massive explosion Monday in Baghdad

BAGHDAD — Iraq on Thursday banned unauthorized flights and ordered all military camps and munitions warehouses to be moved outside Iraqi cities following a massive explosion at a munitions depot southwest of Baghdad that killed one civilian and wounded 13 earlier this week.

The exact cause of Monday night's explosion at the al-Saqr military base is still unknown. The blast shook the Iraqi capital and sent explosives and mortar shells shooting into the sky, damaging nearby homes and terrifying residents who ran into the streets with their cellphones. Black smoke billowed over the city for hours afterward.

The White House and State Department are pressuring governments in Europe to take back thousands of jihadis and their brides captured when ISIS collapsed – and having no success.

Riot Police Confront Protesters In Hong Kong

Reuters: Hong Kongers rally against government on night of storms

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Thousands of school teachers joined an 11th weekend of anti-government protests in Hong Kong on Saturday, as shops pulled down their shutters and braced for another restive summer night.

Weeks of increasingly violent demonstrations have plunged the city into turmoil. Water-filled barricades fortify the airport and government offices. Posters showing bloody clashes are stuck on street corners and there is a protest nearly every night.

The unrest began in June in opposition to a now-suspended extradition bill, and have since grown to include broader demands.

Report: A US–Russia Nuclear War Could 'Plunge Earth Into A 10-Year Winter'

Posted: 17 Aug 2019 08:03 AM PDT

Fires ignited by an all-out nuclear war detonations would likely inject around 147 million tons of soot into the atmosphere. These soot aerosols would encircle the entire globe within weeks, plunging the Earth into an enduring nuclear winter

Daily Mail: A US–Russia nuclear war could 'plunge Earth into a 10-year winter' causing plummeting global temperatures and constant darkness, scientists find

* Fires started by nukes would inject 147 million tons of soot into the atmosphere
* Blanketing the globe within weeks this soot would blot out light from the sun
* As a result global temperatures would decrease by an average of around 16°F
* The results highlight the disastrous consequences of nuclear war, experts said

Were the United States and Russia to engage in full-out atomic warfare, the consequences would plunge the Earth into a 10-year nuclear winter.

Fires ignited by nuclear detonations would likely inject around 147 million tons (150 billion kilograms) of soot into the atmosphere.

Winds in the stratosphere would cause these soot aerosols to encircle the entire globe within weeks, plunging the Earth into an enduring nuclear winter.

Blotting out the light of the sun, the soot clouds would cause average surface temperatures to drop by almost 16.2°F (9°C).

The experts predict that it would take around seven years for the curtain of soot to begin to visibly clear — and three more for light to return to normal levels.

The war's atmospheric effects would also see the monsoon collapse and a significant increase in the variability of the El Niño cycle.

You Can Now See What A Nuclear Detonation Over Manhattan Looks Like In This New VR Simulation

Posted: 17 Aug 2019 07:58 AM PDT

Nukemap VR simulates a nuclear bomb explosion in New York City to educate people about atomic weapons. Christopher Manzione; Reinventing Civil Defense/Stevens Institute of Technology

Business Insider: I just nuked Manhattan in a realistic new VR simulation, and the experience changed how I understand the bomb

* Nukemap VR is a new virtual-reality experience that lets users detonate a nuclear weapon in New York City.
* The simulation is designed to educate the public about the scale and scope of atomic explosions.
* The project is part of a $500,000 project called Reinventing Civil Defense at the Stevens Institute of Technology, which aims to "restore a broad, cultural understanding of nuclear risk."
* Future iterations of Nukemap VR, which is based on the interactive Nukemap tool, may let users simulate any nuke and location in the world.

Nuking the city of New York was terrifyingly easy and disturbingly informative.

From the bank of the Hudson River in Hoboken, New Jersey, while gazing out at the Manhattan skyline, I simply moved my hand over a giant red button, and then pushed it in.

A bright white flash temporarily blinded me. About half a second later, a deafening blast akin to 1,000 thunderclaps pounded my ears. Next came an ominous and murmuring roar: the audible lingering aftermath of the nuclear explosion. The noise bounced around the area for what seemed like an eternity, yet was no more than a minute.

Are We In A New Cold War?

Marion Smith, USA Today: We're in a new Cold War. Hong Kong, like Berlin before it, is the first battle.

Continued American silence will convince China that it can advance on other fronts. We must show Beijing that Hong Kong's freedom isn't up for grabs.

Would the United States have let the Soviet Union invade West Berlin? Never. Yet America is on the verge of allowing Communist China to enslave the free city of Hong Kong. If this happens, it will be one of the greatest abdications of U.S. moral leadership in history.

Right now, Communist China is massing paramilitary forces on its border with Hong Kong. The purpose appears obvious: Intimidate the pro-freedom movement that has brought parts of the city to a standstill in recent weeks. Meanwhile, Beijing's rulers have labeled Hong Kong's protesters "terrorists," while stating that "those who play with fire will perish by it." The echoes of the Tiananmen Square massacre 30 years ago are unmistakable.

WNU Editor: I grew up in the Cold War, and this is not the same. What we are seeing is the rise of China both economically and politically, and how they are using these strengths as leverage on the world stage. Ideology may play an important role for President Xi in China, but outside of China Communist ideology is the last thing that people are interested in.

U.S. Arranged Secret Talks Between Israel, U.A.E. Over Iran

Brian Hook, head of US State Department's Iran Action Group, arranged clandestine meetings between Israel and UAE to cooperate on Iran (AFP)

Middle East Monitor: Israel and UAE held two secret meetings on cooperation against Iran

US sources said that Israel and the United Arab Emirates had held two secret meetings during which they coordinated joint measures against Iran, reported the Wall Street Journal on Thursday.

The sources added that during the secret meetings between Israel and the UAE, which were held by the US Special Representative for Iran, Brian Hook, both sides exchanged intelligence on Iran, claiming that the UAE considers Iran, like Israel, as a threat to its security.

A US source said that the first secret meeting was held last spring, followed by another recent secret meeting. The official did not disclose the timing and venue of the meetings between Israel and the UAE, which have been known to a few officials in the US administration.

Sebastien Roblin, National Interest: World War III (Almost): China, Russia, South Korea and Japan Nearly Went to War

What stopped this disaster?

Aerial encounters between bombers and patrol planes and jet fighters are common, though sometimes tense occurrences as fighter pilots sometimes seek to intimidate the crews of bombers or spy planes with close, dangerous flybys. However, it's rare today for probing bombers or spy planes to actually violate another country's airspace—and even rarer for fighters to open fire during an intercept, even if only in warning.

The morning dawned peacefully enough on July 22 as Chinese and Russian warplanes soared towards a rendezvous point over the Sea of Japan for what was to be their first-ever joint patrol.

As Russia's defense ministry put it, this was intended to deepen "Russian-Chinese relations within our all-encompassing partnership, of further increasing cooperation between our armed forces, and of perfecting their capabilities to carry out joint actions, and of strengthening global strategic security."

Newsweek: Ethical Hackers Sabotage F-15 Fighter Jet, Expose Serious Vulnerabilities

A team of hackers given unprecedented access to a flight system used in F-15 fighter jets reportedly confirmed the existence of serious cybersecurity bugs.

Researchers discovered vulnerabilities that, if exploited, could be used to shut down the Trusted Aircraft Information Download Station (TADS)—a $20,000 device that collects data from video cameras and sensors while jets are in flight, The Washington Post first reported.

Key technical details remain unknown, but it was confirmed that the tests took place during the Def Con conference, held in Las Vegas between August 8 and August 11.

The ethical hackers were brought there by Synack, a cyber company that partners with the Department of Defense on a "Hack the Pentagon" bug-hunting program. The new demo was the first time that researchers had been allowed physical access to the F-15 system.

Russia And China Continue To Prop Up The Maduro Madness In Venezuela

Posted: 17 Aug 2019 05:35 AM PDT

President Xi Jinping met with President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela at the Great Hall of the People

Rick Manning, Real Clear Energy: Venezuela, China, Russia – Oh My

The world is a complicated place.

Most people don't associate the devastation of the Venezuela by communist leader Nicolas Maduro with China, yet Venezuelan oil lies at the heart of China's interests and as a result, they have been propping up the murderous South American leader.

Shockingly, Venezuela has the largest known reserves of oil in the world, and in 1950 had the fourth largest Gross Domestic Product in the world and second highest GDP per capita. Venezuela's economy was six times the size of China, and as late as 1982, they were still the largest GDP in South America. However, by 2017 Venezuela's per capita GDP had shrunk back to levels last seen at the turn of the century, and they continue to shrink in spite of its impressive oil reserves.

In a couple of decades, the country has receded from relative affluence to scenes of desperate people eating their pets to stay alive, as Maduro's repressive communist regime continues to destroy all capital investment in the country. With their eye on both Venezuela's oil riches and the ability to project short-and medium range missile threats to the United States from the Caribbean country, China and Russia have been sending billions of dollars to prop up the Maduro madness.

Hong Kong Protests Show Little Sign of Flagging as Large Crowds Rally for Democracy

Posted: 18 Aug 2019 01:33 AM PDT

Hong Kong’s eleventh straight weekend of anti-government protests culminated in a large rally Sunday at the city’s Victoria Park.

Tens of thousands chanted “Free Hong Kong! Democracy Now!” and “Fight for freedom! Stand for Hong Kong!” as a heavy rain fell. Many protesters carried banners decrying alleged police brutality and what they claim is collusion between law enforcement and criminal gangs known as triads.

Others carried banners proclaiming “Hong Kong independence.”

Vanessa, a 42-year-old protester attending the rally with her banker husband, said “We are here to support the young people. I don’t fully agree with everything they do. I don’t one hundred percent agree with what the teenagers have done, but in the end I’ll support them because I know what they’re doing is for Hong Kong.”

Yesterday, thousands of teachers marched in support of a student strike called for Monday, and small groups of radical protesters engaged in a tense standoff with police in the densely populated Kowloon peninsula. A large pro-government rally was also held in the Admiralty district, the site of many previous clashes. But there were no major street battles or arrests, to the considerable relief of many in the restive enclave, where many residents have become grimly accustomed to barricaded streets, transport chaos, and palls of choking tear gas hanging over the narrow streets.

By the middle of Sunday afternoon, large numbers of protesters defied a police order and began marching from Victoria Park towards Admiralty, where the main government offices are located. The sheer number of marchers overwhelmed major roads and brought downtown districts to a virtual standstill.

Read more: How Protests Turned into a Battle for Hong Kong’s Soul

Hong Kong’s political crisis originally began as a protest against a now suspended bill that would have, for the first time, allowed the extradition of fugitives from the former British colony to mainland China. Detractors of the bill feared it would be used by Beijing to round up dissidents and critics of the communist regime.

However, the anti-extradition movement quickly snowballed into a rebellion against Chinese sovereignty itself. Many protesters are now calling for self-determination for the semi-autonomous territory, which was retroceded to China in 1997 but remains culturally, politically and linguistically distinct from the mainland.

Over the course of 11 tumultuous weeks, the territory’s legislature has been ransacked, emblems of the Chinese state defaced, and the airport—one of the world’s busiest—shut down.

“We want peace and we want order to be restored, but we also want the problems to be resolved,” said Mike, a 60-year-old retiree who had brought his family to attend the rally

“We also would like to have order restored, but what’s the next move? The government will be the same, nothing will have changed. That’s the problem.”

Dozens Dead or Hurt in Wedding Suicide Bombing in Afghanistan Capital

Posted: 17 Aug 2019 02:36 PM PDT

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A suicide-bomb blast tripped through a wedding party on a busy Saturday night in Afghanistan’s capital and dozens of people were killed or wounded, a government official said. More than 1,000 people had been invited, one witness said.

Interior Ministry spokesman Nusrat Rahimi told The Associated Press the attacker set off explosives among the wedding participants. Both the Taliban and a local affiliate of the Islamic State group carry out bloody attacks in the capital.

“Around 1,200 guests were invited to the wedding,” said Ahmad Omid, a survivor who said the gathering was for his father’s cousin. “I was with the groom in the other room when we heard the blast and then I couldn’t find anyone. Everyone was lying all around the hall.”

Outside a local hospital, families wailed. “There are so many dead and wounded victims,” Omid said.

The blast at the Dubai City wedding hall in western Kabul, a part of the city that many in the minority Shiite Hazara community call home, shattered a period of relative calm.

On Aug. 7, a Taliban car bomb aimed at Afghan security forces detonated on the same road in a busy west Kabul neighborhood, killing 14 people and wounding 145 — most of them women, children and other civilians.

Kabul’s huge, brightly lit wedding halls are centers of community life in a city weary of decades of war, with thousands of dollars spent on a single evening.

“Devastated by the news of a suicide attack inside a wedding hall in Kabul. A heinous crime against our people; how is it possible to train a human and ask him to go and blow himself (up) inside a wedding?!!” Sediq Seddiqi, spokesman for President Ashraf Ghani, said in a Twitter post.

The wedding halls also serve as meeting places, and in November at least 55 people were killed when a suicide bomber sneaked into a Kabul wedding hall where hundreds of Muslim religious scholars and clerics had gathered to mark the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad. The Taliban denied involvement in an attack that bore the hallmarks of the Islamic State affiliate.

Saturday night’s explosion came a few days after the end of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, with Kabul residents visiting family and friends, and just before Afghanistan marks its 100th independence day on Monday.

The blast comes at a greatly uncertain time in Afghanistan as the United States and the Taliban near a deal to end a nearly 18-year war, America’s longest conflict.

The Afghan government has been sidelined from those discussions, and presidential spokesman Seddiqi said earlier Saturday that his government was waiting to hear results of President Donald Trump’s meeting Friday with his national security team about the negotiations. Top issues include a U.S. troop withdrawal and Taliban guarantees not to let Afghanistan become a launching pad for global terror attacks.

While the Taliban earlier this year pledged to do more to protect civilians, it continues to stage deadly attacks against Afghan security forces and others in what is seen by many as an attempt to strengthen its position at the negotiating table.

The conflict continues to take a horrific toll on civilians. Last year more than 3,800, including more than 900 children, were killed in Afghanistan by the Taliban, U.S. and allied forces, the Islamic State affiliate and other actors, the United Nations said.

Kim Jong Un Expresses ‘Great Satisfaction’ Over Multiple North Korean Weapons Tests

Posted: 17 Aug 2019 07:32 AM PDT

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea said Saturday that leader Kim Jong Un supervised another test-firing of an unspecified new weapon, seen as an attempt to pressure Washington and Seoul over slow nuclear negotiations and their joint military exercises.

Pyongyang’s Korean Central News Agency, or KCNA, said that following Friday’s launches, Kim expressed “great satisfaction” over his military’s “mysterious and amazing success rates” in recent testing activity and vowed to build up “invincible military capabilities no one dare provoke.” The report did not mention any specific comment about the United States or South Korea.

The launches were North Korea’s sixth round of tests since late July that revealed developments of a new rocket artillery system and two separate short-range mobile ballistic missile systems that experts say would expand its ability to strike targets throughout South Korea, including U.S. bases there.

KCNA did not describe what Friday’s weapons were or how they performed, but said that the tests were successful and strengthened the military’s confidence in the reliability of the system.

North Korea’s official Rodong Sinmun newspaper published photos that showed what appeared to be a missile soaring from a launcher installed on a vehicle and striking what appeared to be a coastal target. Kim is seen jubilantly raising his fist while celebrating with military officials.

“(Kim) said everyone should remember that it is the (ruling) party’s core plan and unwavering determination to build a powerful force strong enough to discourage any forces from daring to provoke us and to leave any opponent defenseless against our Juche weapons of absolute power even in situations of physical clashes,” KCNA said, referring to the North’s national ideology of self-reliance.

In a separate statement on Saturday, KCNA berated the ongoing U.S.-South Korea military drills as an invasion rehearsal that compels North Korea to constantly develop “powerful physical means and their deployment for an actual war.”

The United States has downsized its major military exercises with South Korea and halted dispatches of strategic assets such as long-range bombers and aircraft carriers to the region since the first summit between Kim and President Donald Trump last year. But North Korea says even the smaller drills violate agreements between the leaders.

South Korea’s military said earlier that two projectiles launched from the North’s eastern coast flew about 230 kilometers (143 miles) before landing in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. The U.S. and South Korean militaries were analyzing the launches but didn’t immediately say whether the weapons were ballistic missiles or rocket artillery.

Experts say Trump’s repeated downplaying of the North’s recent launches allow the country more room to intensify its testing activity and advance its short-range weaponry while it seeks to build leverage ahead of nuclear negotiations with Washington, which could resume after the end of the military drills later this month.

The U.S. envoy for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, will visit Japan and South Korea early next week for talks on how to “further strengthen coordination on the final, fully verified denuclearization” of North Korea, the U.S. State Department said.

North Korea has ignored South Korean calls for dialogue recently and is seen as trying to force Seoul to make stronger efforts to coax major concessions from Washington on its behalf.

Hours before the latest launches, an unidentified North Korean government spokesperson used unusually blunt language to criticize South Korean President Moon Jae-in for continuing to hold military exercises with the U.S. and over his rosy comments on inter-Korean diplomacy, and said Pyongyang has no current plans to talk with Seoul.

Moon said in a televised speech on Thursday that momentum for dialogue remains alive despite the series of “worrying actions taken by North Korea recently” and called for Pyongyang to choose “economic prosperity over its nuclear program.”

The spokesperson also criticized South Korea’s recent acquisition of advanced U.S.-made fighter jets and said it would be “senseless” for Moon to believe that inter-Korean dialogue will automatically begin after the end of the U.S.-South Korean drills.

The North had recently said it would talk only with Washington and not Seoul, and that inter-Korean dialogue won’t resume unless the South offers a “plausible excuse” on why it keeps hosting military drills with the United States. Seoul’s Unification Ministry, which deals with inter-Korean affairs, criticized the North Korean statement, saying it wouldn’t help efforts to improve relations.

Yemen Rebels Claim Responsibility for Saudi Oil Field Fire Attack

Posted: 17 Aug 2019 07:17 AM PDT

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Drones claimed by Yemen’s Houthi rebels attacked a massive oil and gas field deep inside of Saudi Arabia’s sprawling desert on Saturday, causing what the kingdom described as a “limited fire.”

The claimed Houthi attack on the Shaybah oil field, which produces some 1 million barrels of crude oil a day, again shows the reach of the Houthis’ drone program as Shaybah sits only a few kilometers (miles) from the kingdom’s border with the United Arab Emirates.

It also comes amid turmoil in Yemen and heightened tensions in the wider Mideast between the U.S. and Iran, which the West sees as a major backer of the Houthis.

State media in Saudi Arabia quoted Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih as saying production was not affected at the oil field and no one was wounded in the attack.

Al-Falih described the attack as striking a gas plant at Shaybah. He did not elaborate in the brief statement carried by the state-run Saudi Press Agency.

The state-run Saudi Arabian Oil Co., known widely as Saudi Aramco, issued a terse statement acknowledging a “limited fire.”

Yahia Sarie, a spokesman for the Houthis, earlier claimed in a video that the attack saw the rebels launch 10 drones at the facility.

The oil field at Shaybah is in the Arabian Peninsula’s Empty Quarter, a sea of sand where temperatures routinely hit 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit). Saudi Aramco on its website refers to the field as “the most remote treasure on Earth,” home to reserves of 14.3 billion barrels of oil.

Small cities in India hold clue to AI's dirty little secret

Posted:

By Cade MetzNamita Pradhan sat at a desk in downtown Bhubaneswar, India, about 40 miles from the Bay of Bengal, staring at a video recorded in a hospital on the other side of the world. The video showed the inside of someone's colon. Pradhan was looking for polyps, small growths in the large intestine that could lead to cancer. When she found one — they look a bit like a slimy, angry pimple — she marked it with her computer mouse and keyboard, drawing a digital circle around the tiny bulge. She was not trained as a doctor, but she was helping to teach an artificial intelligence system that could eventually do the work of a doctor.Pradhan was one of dozens of young Indian women and men lined up at desks on the fourth floor of a small office building. They were trained to annotate all kinds of digital images, pinpointing everything from stop signs & pedestrians in street scenes to factories and oil tankers in satellite photos.AI, most people in the tech industry would tell you, is the future of their industry, and it is improving fast thanks to something called machine learning. But tech executives rarely discuss the labor-intensive process that goes into its creation. AI is learning from humans. Lots and lots of humans. Before an AI system can learn, someone has to label the data supplied to it. Humans, for example, must pinpoint the polyps. The work is vital to the creation of artificial intelligence like self-driving cars, surveillance systems and automated health care.Tech companies keep quiet about this work. And they face growing concerns from privacy activists over the large amounts of personal data they are storing and sharing with outside businesses.Earlier this year, I negotiated a look behind the curtain that Silicon Valley's wizards rarely grant. I made a meandering trip across India and stopped at a facility across the street from the Superdome in downtown New Orleans. In all, I visited five offices where people are doing the endlessly repetitive work needed to teach AI systems, all run by a company called iMerit. There were intestine surveyors like Pradhan and specialists in telling a good cough from a bad cough. There were language specialists and street scene identifiers. What is a pedestrian? Is that a double yellow line or a dotted white line? One day, a robotic car will need to know the difference. What I saw didn't look much like the future — or at least the automated one you might imagine. The offices could have been call centers or payment processing centers. One was a timeworn former apartment building in the middle of a low-income residential neighborhood in western Kolkata that teemed with pedestrians, auto rickshaws and street vendors. In facilities like the one I visited in Bhubaneswar and in other cities in India, China, Nepal, the Philippines, East Africa and the United States, tens of thousands of office workers are punching a clock while they teach the machines.Tens of thousands more workers, independent contractors usually working in their homes, also annotate data through crowdsourcing services like Amazon Mechanical Turk, which lets anyone distribute digital tasks to independent workers in the United States and other countries. The workers earn a few pennies for each label.Based in India, iMerit labels data for many of the biggest names in the technology and automobile industries. It declined to name these clients publicly, citing confidentiality agreements. But it recently revealed that its more than 2,000 workers in nine offices around the world are contributing to an online data-labeling service from Amazon called SageMaker Ground Truth. Previously, it listed Microsoft as a client. One day, who knows when, artificial intelligence could hollow out the job market. But for now, it is generating relatively low-paying jobs. The market for data labeling passed $500 million in 2018 and it will reach $1.2 billion by 2023, according to the research firm Cognilytica. This kind of work, the study showed, accounted for 80% of the time spent building AI technology. Is the work exploitative? It depends on where you live and what you're working on. In India, it is a ticket to the middle class. In New Orleans, it's a decent enough job. For someone working as an independent contractor, it is often a dead end. There are skills that must be learned — like spotting signs of a disease in a video or medical scan or keeping a steady hand when drawing a digital lasso around the image of a car or a tree. In some cases, when the task involves medical videos, pornography or violent images, the work turns grisly."When you first see these things, it is deeply disturbing. You don't want to go back to the work. You might not go back to the work," said Kristy Milland, who spent years doing data-labeling work on Amazon Mechanical Turk and has become a labor activist on behalf of workers on the service."But for those of us who cannot afford to not go back to the work, you just do it," Milland said. Before traveling to India, I tried labeling images on a crowdsourcing service, drawing digital boxes around Nike logos and identifying "not safe for work" images. I was painfully inept.I had to pass a test before starting the work. Even that was disheartening. The first three times, I failed. Labeling images so people could instantly search a website for retail goods — not to mention the time spent identifying crude images of naked women and sex toys as "NSFW" — wasn't exactly inspiring.AI researchers hope they can build systems that can learn from smaller amounts of data. But for the foreseeable future, human labor is essential."This is an expanding world, hidden beneath the technology," said Mary Gray, an anthropologist at Microsoft and the co-author of the book "Ghost Work," which explores the data labeling market. "It is hard to take humans out of the loop."The city of templesBhubaneswar is called the City of Temples. Ancient Hindu shrines rise over roadside markets at the southwestern end of the city — giant towers of stacked stone that date to the first millennium. In the city center, many streets are unpaved. Cows and feral dogs meander among the mopeds, cars and trucks. The city — population: 830,000 — is also a rapidly growing hub for online labor. About a 15-minute drive from the temples, on a (paved) road near the city center, a white, four-story building sits behind a stone wall. Inside, there are three rooms filled with long rows of desks, each with its own widescreen computer display. This was where Namita Pradhan spent her days labeling videos when I met her.Pradhan, 24, grew up just outside the city and earned a degree from a local college, where she studied biology and other subjects before taking the job with iMerit. It was recommended by her brother, who was already working for the company. She lived at a hostel near her office during the week and took the bus back to her family home each weekend.I visited the office on a temperate January day. Some of the women sitting at the long rows of desks were traditionally dressed — bright red saris, long gold earrings. Pradhan wore a green long-sleeve shirt, black pants, and white lace-up shoes as she annotated videos for a client in the United States.Over the course of what was a typical eight-hour day, the shy 24-year-old watched about a dozen colonoscopy videos, constantly reversing the video for a closer look at individual frames.Every so often, she would find what she was looking for. She would lasso it with a digital "bounding box." She drew hundreds of these bounding boxes, labeling the polyps and other signs of illness, like blood clots and inflammation. Her client, a company in the United States that iMerit is not allowed to name, will eventually feed her work into an AI system so it can learn to identify medical conditions on its own. The colon owner is not necessarily aware the video exists. Pradhan doesn't know where the images came from. Neither does iMerit.Pradhan learned the task during seven days of online video calls with a nonpracticing doctor, based in Oakland, California, who helps train workers at many iMerit offices. But some question whether experienced doctors and medical students should do this labeling themselves. This work requires people "who have a medical background, and the relevant knowledge in anatomy and pathology," said Dr. George Shih, a radiologist at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian and the co-founder of the startup MD.ai., which helps organizations build artificial intelligence for health care. When we chatted about her work, Pradhan called it "quite interesting," but tiring. As for the graphic nature of the videos? "It was disgusting at first, but then you get used to it."The images she labeled were grisly, but not as grisly as others handled at iMerit. Their clients are also building artificial intelligence that can identify and remove unwanted images on social networks and other online services. That means labels for pornography, graphic violence and other noxious images. This work can be so upsetting to workers, iMerit tries to limit how much of it they see. Pornography and violence are mixed with more innocuous images, and those labeling the grisly images are sequestered in separate rooms to shield other workers, said Liz O'Sullivan, who oversaw data annotation at an AI startup called Clarifai and has worked closely with iMerit on such projects.Other labeling companies will have workers annotate unlimited numbers of these images, O'Sullivan said."I would not be surprised if this causes post-traumatic stress disorder — or worse. It is hard to find a company that is not ethically deplorable that will take this on," she said. "You have to pad the porn and violence with other work, so the workers don't have to look at porn, porn, porn, beheading, beheading, beheading."IMerit said in a statement it does not compel workers to look at pornography or other offensive material and only takes on the work when it can help improve monitoring systems.Pradhan and her fellow labelers earn between $150 and $200 a month, which pulls in between $800 and $1,000 of revenue for iMerit, according to one company executive.By U.S. standards, Pradhan's salary is indecently low. But for her and many others in these offices, it is about an average salary for a data-entry job.Tedious work. But it pays for an apartment.Prasenjit Baidya grew up on a farm about 30 miles from Kolkata, the largest city in West Bengal, on the east coast of India. His parents and extended family still live in his childhood home, a cluster of brick buildings built at the turn of the 19th century. They grow rice and sunflowers in the surrounding fields and dry the seeds on rugs spread across the rooftops. He was the first in his family to get a college education, which included a computer class. But the class didn't teach him all that much. The room offered only one computer for every 25 students. He learned his computer skills after college, when he enrolled in a training course run by a nonprofit called Anudip. It was recommended by a friend, and it cost the equivalent of $5 a month.Anudip runs English and computer courses across India, training about 22,000 people a year. It feeds students directly into iMerit, which its founders set up as a sister operation in 2013. Through Anudip, Baidya landed a job at an iMerit office in Kolkata, and so did his wife, Barnali Paik, who grew up in a nearby village.Over the last six years, iMerit has hired more than 1,600 students from Anudip. It now employs about 2,500 people in total. More than 80% come from families with incomes below $150 a month.Founded in 2012 and still a private company, iMerit has its employees perform digital tasks like transcribing audio files or identifying objects in photos. Businesses across the globe pay the company to use its workers, and increasingly, they assist work on artificial intelligence."We want to bring people from low-income backgrounds into technology — and technology jobs," said Radha Basu, who founded Anudip and iMerit with her husband, Dipak, after long careers in Silicon Valley with the tech giants Cisco Systems and HP.The average age of these workers is 24. Like Baidya, most of them come from rural villages. The company recently opened a new office in Metiabruz, a largely Muslim neighborhood in western Kolkata. There, it hires mostly Muslim women whose families are reluctant to let them outside the bustling area. They are not asked to look at pornographic images or violent material. At first, iMerit focused on simple tasks — sorting product listings for online retail sites, vetting posts on social media. But it has shifted into work that feeds artificial intelligence. The growth of iMerit and similar companies represents a shift away from crowdsourcing services like Mechanical Turk. IMerit and its clients have greater control over how workers are trained and how the work is done.Baidya, now a manager at iMerit, oversees an effort to label street scenes used in training driverless cars for a major company in the United States. His team analyzes and labels digital photos as well as three-dimensional images captured by Lidar, devices that measure distances using pulses of light. They spend their days drawing bounding boxes around cars, pedestrians, stop signs and power lines. He said the work could be tedious, but it had given him a life he might not have otherwise had. He and his wife recently bought an apartment in Kolkata, within walking distance of the iMerit office where she works."The changes in my life — in terms of my financial situation, my experiences, my skills in English — have been a dream," he said. "I got a chance."Listening to people coughA few weeks after my trip to India, I took an Uber through downtown New Orleans. About 18 months ago, iMerit moved into one of the buildings across the street from the Superdome.A major American tech company needed a way of labeling data for a Spanish-language version of its home digital assistant. So it sent the data to the new iMerit office in New Orleans. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, hundreds of construction workers and their families moved into New Orleans to help rebuild the city. Many stayed. A number of Spanish speakers came with that new workforce, and the company began hiring them.Oscar Cabezas, 23, moved with his mother to New Orleans from Colombia. His stepfather found work in construction, and after college Cabezas joined iMerit as it began working on the Spanish-language digital assistant. He annotated everything from tweets to restaurant reviews, identifying people and places and pinpointing ambiguities. In Guatemala, for instance, "pisto" means money, but in Mexico, it means beer. "Every day was a new project," he said. The office has expanded into other work, serving businesses that want to keep their data within the United States. Some projects must remain stateside, for legal and security purposes.Glenda Hernandez, 42, who was born in Guatemala, said she missed her old work on the digital assistant project. She loved to read. She reviewed books online for big publishing companies so she could get free copies, and she relished the opportunity of getting paid to read in Spanish."That was my baby," she said of the project. She was less interested in image tagging or projects like the one that involved annotating recordings of people coughing; it was a way to build AI that identifies disease symptoms of illness over the phone."Listening to coughs all day is kind of disgusting," she said. The work is easily misunderstood, said Gray, the Microsoft anthropologist. Listening to people cough all day may be disgusting, but that is also how doctors spend their days. "We don't think of that as drudgery," she said.Hernandez's work is intended to help doctors do their jobs or maybe, one day, replace them. She takes pride in that. Moments after complaining about the project, she pointed to her colleagues across the office."We were the cough masters," she said.'It was enough to live on then. It wouldn't be now.'In 2005, Kristy Milland signed up for her first job on Amazon Mechanical Turk. She was 26, and living in Toronto with her husband, who managed a local warehouse. Mechanical Turk was a way of making a little extra money. The first project was for Amazon itself. Three photos of a storefront would pop up on her laptop, and she would choose the one that showed the front door. Amazon was building an online service similar to Google Street View, and the company needed help picking the best photos. She made 3 cents for each click, or about 18 cents a minute. In 2010, her husband lost his job, and "MTurk" became a full-time gig. For two years, she worked six or seven days a week, sometimes as much as 17 hours a day. She made about $50,000 a year."It was enough to live on then. It wouldn't be now," Milland said. The work at that time didn't really involve AI. For another project, she would pull information out of mortgage documents or retype names and addresses from photos of business cards, sometimes for as little as a dollar an hour.Around 2010, she started labeling for AI projects. Milland tagged all sorts of data, like gory images that showed up on Twitter (which helps build AI that can help remove gory images from the social network) or aerial footage likely taken somewhere in the Middle East (presumably for AI that the military and its partners are building to identify drone targets).Projects from U.S. tech giants, Milland said, typically paid more than the average job — about $15 an hour. But the job didn't come with health care or paid vacation, and the work could be mind-numbing — or downright disturbing. She called it "horrifically exploitative." Amazon declined to comment.Since 2012, Milland, now 40, has been part of an organization called TurkerNation, which aims to improve conditions for thousands of people who do this work. In April, after 14 years on the service, she quit. She is in law school, and her husband makes $600 less than they pay in rent each month, which does not include utilities. So, she said, they are preparing to go into debt. But she will not go back to labeling data."This is a dystopian future," she said. "And I am done."

Filing ITR? Here's how you can verify Form 16

How Asia can protect its crazy riches

Posted:

By Satyajit DasWith support for globalization and free trade declining in much of the world, Asia has a historic chance to break out of its traditional role as a capital exporter to the West and to instead redirect flows to improve its own economies and financial industries.According to some estimates, the region's pool of wealth at $110 trillion exceeds those of North America and Europe and is growing faster. Japan and China were at or near the top of foreign portfolio investment in the United States, including stocks and short- and long-term bonds, in 2017 with $2 trillion and $1.5 trillion respectively, a U.S. Treasury survey showed. Yet Asia has a poor record of protecting its assets stranded overseas when the cycle turns. In the 1990s, Japanese investors incurred significant losses, primarily on property. During the 2008 crisis, a range of Asian sovereign wealth funds and high net-worth individuals lost heavily on advanced economy shares, real estate, and mortgage-backed and structured securities. The desire to invest overseas partly reflects concern about political risk and governance at home. But leaving familiar territory brings other risks.Distance, language and cultural differences can put Asian investors at a disadvantage when it comes to information. As a result, investors often rely too heavily on intermediaries whose interests don't align with their own.Their main failing, though, is a bias toward certain assets. In an echo of the ill-fated Japanese purchases of Rockefeller Center and the Pebble Beach golf course in the 1980s, Asian investors are buying prime office buildings in New York and London. Swanky apartments are quickly snapped up in world cities, especially by Chinese buyers.Lacking cozy domestic informational networks, Asian investors are particularly susceptible to chasing name asset managers or fashionable businesses. That restricts their options since the best funds are frequently closed to new arrivals. Managers often can't repeat past results. Inadequate expertise frequently leads to unwise choices. In the run-up to 2008, Asian banks and investors suffered losses on purchases of structured products and collateralized debt obligations, or CDOs. High net-worth and retail segments are buying again. Japanese banks have purchased up to 75% of AAA tranches of collateralized loan obligations, and perhaps one-third of all CLOs, which have common features with CDOs.Where investments are leveraged, they must be financed by borrowing dollars and euros in wholesale markets. Losses may create difficulties in rolling over funding. As in 2008, forced sales and the lack of trading liquidity will accelerate declines in prices. Why look abroad at all? There is a mismatch between Asian savings and the size of domestic capital markets, which are marked by low returns, a smaller range of investment products and limited local expertise. The regional rivalries between Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Mumbai and Tokyo and a bias toward real industry have hampered the development of financial services.Asia lacks quality indigenous banks such as JPMorgan Chase & Co. or The Goldman Sachs Group Inc., or asset managers such as BlackRock Inc. or Pacific Investment Management Co. Most financial institutions are domestically focused. In 2018, assets under management at Asian hedge funds fell 10% to just over $100 billion, a mere 3% of the global total. Private wealth management remains the preserve of Western firms.Asia's high savings are a global anomaly, driven by rising incomes, a culture of thrift and minimal social safety nets. Governments need to move with greater determination to enable more savings to be absorbed locally. The timing may be right as the world is tilting more toward national interests and self-sufficiency.The first step must be to accelerate development of capital markets to boost size, depth, liquidity and investment choices. Revised listing and issuance rules, harmonized pan-Asian regulations, breakups of family dominated conglomerates, and partial or full privatization of key state-owned firms would improve market depth. Changes in rules and tax incentives should encourage local pension funds or insurance companies to adopt stable, long-term investment practices.Second, the creation of world-class financial institutions and skilled asset managers needs to be a priority. To attract the best and brightest, limited career choices and pay that lags behind international levels need to be addressed. State-sponsored financial skills training and accreditation systems should be improved. A system of mutual recognition of qualifications would increase labor mobility. Finally, retaining capital within Asia requires improving confidence in the security of savings. Key steps include creating independent institutions free from political interference, as well as bolstering the rule of law and transparent and consistent regulations. Singapore and Hong Kong, despite its recent protests, are examples to emulate.Without change, the familiar cycle of exuberant foreign investment and the loss of Asian wealth is likely to be repeated in the next downturn.

ED attaches Rs 190 crore worth Usha Martin assets

KOLKATA: The Enforcement Directorate has issued an order attaching Rs 190 crore worth of immovable assets of the wire ropes business of Usha Martin Ltd (UML) at Ranchi. The order follows an FIR filed by the CBI after investigation into the sale of ore from an iron ore mine allotted to the company for captive use. UML, which recently completed the Rs 4,600 crore sale of its steel business to Tata Sponge Iron, has said the order from ED Patna would not have any impact on the transaction. The order involves provisional attachment of the property of the wire ropes business for 180 days. "The transfer and sale of the iron ore mine and the steel unit was concluded by June 2019. The order will not have any impact on it," Rajeev Jhawar, UML managing director, who is currently in Singapore, told ET.The CBI has been conducting investigation based on a compliant that the company was permitted to use its iron ore mine at Ghatkuri, West Singbhum, Jharkhand, for captive use only. In a statement Saturday, Usha Martin said it had received a copy of the order issued on August 9 on August 16. Usha Martin said it does not agree with the ED order and was seeking opinion for appropriate legal action to contest it. "The company is seeking advice from its legal counsel and as such has been given to understand that the order would not affect its operations," the statement added. The company said it had conducted its iron ore mining operations according to the mining lease deed and permissions received from relevant authorities. The statement also said the Jharkhand High Court had in an order dated February 14, 2012, stated the company had the right to sell ore from the mine as per terms of the mining lease. UML statement also said it had used the proceeds of the sale of its steel business to deleverage its balance sheet by reducing its Rs 4,500 crore debt to around Rs 520 crore. "We gave repaid our dues to the lenders without any haircut," a senior UML official said, adding that the timing of the sale was appropriate as it was "among only a handful of deals to have gone through successfully given the subsequent slowdown in the steel market."

Sit on sidelines even if govt unveils stimulus: Ajay Bagga

Posted:

In an interaction with ET NOW, Ajay Bagga, market expert, said that you can wait out if that stimulus does not come through and even if it comes through you will get enough opportunities. ET Now: Just about two weeks ago we had a slew of brokerage houses that were actually very worried about the fact that the debt had ballooned on RIL but Mukesh Ambani has been very swift in rectifying that fear as well or addressing that concern as well by giving a very ambitious debt reduction plan. Firstly, what do you think RIL could do from here on, what it could not do? Is that plan a bit too ambitious? Also, the stock is at Rs 1200, do you believe that there is room for further upmove?Ajay Bagga: From an analysis perspective, without giving a buy or sell recommendation on the stock, what I would say is that Reliance apart from its traditional refinery petchem business has got two huge levers now going for it -- the telecom and the consumption. These two themes are global themes, plus in India the consumption theme is massive and it is a theme which will play out in the years to come making India one of the top three markets after the US and China in terms of consumption and Reliance is positioning itself fairly well. Already Reliance is the biggest retailer in the country and now it is going for an e-commerce play. It has de-risked on the petchem side by signing with Aramco and with BP on the gas exploration part. This was a very well thought out presentation and where they are coming from, they are much better allocators of capital than most of the Street; why not that company should be leveraged is what I would look at. They have been very efficient allocators and they have created value for investors in the past. The brokerage reports that pointed out that the net debt is getting too high was addressed. So overall, what I would say is it is a well-positioned company. If you are investing in India, you have to have a position in Reliance. Also, within five years there would be a listing for the retail play and the telecom play and thus a lot of drivers for the stock overall. Again, by compliance I am not allowed to give a buy or sell, I am just stating the facts as I interpret them.ET Now: We are finished with the first-quarter earnings season. Did it meet your expectations and any disappointments that you would like to flag off?Ajay Bagga: Both sales and earnings were below par. If you take out the financials, then the numbers are pretty poor. Overall, it has been a subdued quarter, we expect the next quarter to be bad too. The smart money has started taking positions already. The question is -- do you wait for October second-third week when the poor results of this quarter get discounted and the management guidance comes for the rest of the year or do you start buying now?. The smart money -- the institutional money -- has started pecking in, so I would say it is up to an individual allocator what they want to do but my vote will be for caution. What will append this argument is if the government of India comes out with a stimulus plan. The market has ended today with a lot of hope that with the prime minister meeting the FM yesterday there is a lot of hope that even on this weekend or in the near future you will get a stimulus that then changes this analysis and then probably this week was a good time to buy. You can wait out if that stimulus does not come through and even if it comes through you will get enough opportunities. I would still wait, I am not an institutional investor and I would say this still is a cautious time given the global scenario, given how the domestic economy is faring and given the lack of corporate earnings growth that we have seen in quarter one.

Bitcoin is posting biggest weekly decline since November

Posted:

By Olivia RinaldiBitcoin's having its worst week this year, and the rest of the cryptocurrency market isn't doing much better. The world's largest digital asset fell about 15 per cent this week to around $10,145, the biggest five-day slide since November. The Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index has slumped about 12 per cent, only the worst drop in four weeks."People thought at certain points in the last year or so that cryptocurrencies would become the flight to safety trade," said Matt Maley, an equity strategist at Miller Tabak + Co. "The cryptocurrency is losing some of that luster of being considered a safe asset." 70713223 Based on an analysis of price-chart patterns, the outlook appears pessimistic, with each new high being lower than the last. For Bitcoin to break this trend it would need to break above its latest high which was $12,316 on Aug. 6. Any further high that doesn't break that level would likely further validate the current down channel. 70713228

Small towns in India are powering the global race for artificial intelligence
