Nintendo beefs up Nintendo Switch battery life with improved model

Posted: 17 Jul 2019 07:09 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

Nintendo revealed an improved model of the Nintendo Switch Wednesday that includes a decent bump in battery life, allowing for 4.5 - 9 hours of play compared to the original model's 2.5 - 6.5 hour range.

The improved Nintendo Switch model is identical to the current standard Switch model except for its insides, so it doesn't have a fancy new name or anything like that. If anything, the new models will quietly phase out the old models, and most people won't even notice.

Tana Mongeau is more self aware than you think

Posted: 17 Jul 2019 07:01 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

Tana Mongeau is the only YouTuber whose controversial reputation can rival Jake Paul's.

Which is why it's oddly fitting that they're engaged, after a whirlwind (read: extremely public) romance that started with an innocuous selfie on Snapchat and ended with a proposal during her 21st birthday trip to Las Vegas just two months later.

Before last year, Mongeau was a brash vlogger known for doing whatever she wanted, and sharing every detail of her escapades in wild Storytime rants. When VidCon declined to give her a Featured Creator badge for its 2018 event, that tenacity led her to organizing TanaCon, an alternate convention that took place in the Marriott across the street from the building that housed VidCon. But when a 19, going on 20-year-old tries to singlehandedly plan a convention for 5,000 attendees in about 40 days, it's bound to fall apart. The disaster that was TanaCon has been compared to Fyre Fest, and it was the subject of YouTuber-turned-documentarian Shane Dawson's Read more...

The EU will investigate how Amazon handles retailers' data

Posted: 17 Jul 2019 06:49 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

Amazon may have been misusing data from independent retailers trading through its platform, and the EU is going to look into it — and potentially impose hefty fines on the e-commerce giant.

The European Commission launched a formal antitrust investigation into the matter Wednesday.

The EC argues that Amazon has a dual role: It sells products on its own marketplace and it provides a platform for independent retailers to sell through Amazon, too. But the Commission's preliminary investigation found that Amazon uses "competitively sensitive information" about these independent retailers, possibly to their detriment.  Read more...

Lily Allen wrote a song about 'Game of Thrones' star Alfie Allen in 2006. It's gone viral again.

Posted: 17 Jul 2019 05:54 AM PDT

Most people would agree that Game of Thrones star Alfie Allen is doing pretty well for himself these days.

The English actor just finished a run in a record-breakingly popular TV show as Theon Greyjoy, his IMDb page is packed with credits, and last night he was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Still, it wasn't always this way. At least not if you listen to his sister, singer/songwriter Lily Allen.

'Stranger Things 4' is headed for a world-breaking Winona collision

Posted: 17 Jul 2019 05:52 AM PDT

Warning: Mild spoilers for Stranger Things 3 lie ahead.

Stranger Things is on a tight schedule.

Not only are fans already begging for a fourth installment less than two weeks after the release of the third — but between seasons, producers and writers are contending with the ever-increasing ages of their kid actors, the waffling staying power of '80s nostalgia, and the many quirks that come with maintaining a historically accurate timeline within a real-world timeframe.

"It's a tough one because I'd love to [make episodes] faster than we do, but the reality is that our show is singular because we are unusually small as a creative team," Stranger Things executive producer Shawn Levy tells Mashable of the show's race against the clock.  Read more...

What Apple's products could look like without Jony Ive leading design

Posted: 17 Jul 2019 04:00 AM PDT

It'll truly be the end of an era when Apple Chief Design Officer Jony Ive walks out of the massive sliding glass doors of Apple Park to design things at his new company, LoveFrom.

Ive and his team of close-knit industrial designers have blessed the world with many iconic products, including the iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch over the last 20 years.

These are all devices that have changed the world. But in some ways, Ive's obsession with stripping everything down to its purest form has also been the source of much frustration for users. Chance the Rapper has a secret role in 'The Lion King' but you probably won't realise it's him

Chance The Rapper made a secret appearance in Disney's remake of The Lion King and, chances are, you might not even notice it when you see the movie.

Chance told Jimmy Fallon that the role came about when his friend Donald Glover — who plays Simba in the movie — told Lion King director Jon Favreau that he was a huge fan. Glover contacted Chance to tell him Favreau wanted him to come in as a "nostalgia consultant" to tell him "what '90s kids like about the Lion King."

But while consulting, Chance also did some vocal work.

"You won't know it's me," he told Fallon. "I do a lot of the background noises, I'm dead serious. In very small parts, like if you see an antelope grazing."  Read more...

But where's the pickup truck?

Ford, the U.S. automaker behind the popular F-150 full-size pickup truck, petitioned the Unicode Consortium back in 2018 to add a pickup truck emoji. The organization manages what words become picture graphics used in our texts, tweets, status updates, emails, and more. On World Emoji Day (yes, there's a day dedicated to emoji, and it's today) Ford showed off the proposed image that could make its way onto phone and computer screens. Read more...

Stephen Colbert slams Trump: 'Racism is your brand'

Posted: 17 Jul 2019 03:19 AM PDT

Donald Trump has come under fire from the late show hosts for his weak attempts to defend the slew of racist tweets he posted on Sunday.

The Daily Show's Trevor Noah broke down exactly what was wrong with his "don't have a racist bone in my body" comments, and on Tuesday night, Stephen Colbert also took a shot.

"You have said a lot of racist things," said The Late Show host. "You demanded the execution of the Central Park Five, who were innocent. You said Barack Obama was from Kenya. You wanted to ban all muslims. You said Mexicans were murderers. Racism is your brand.

"It's like Colonel Sanders saying 'I don't have a finger-lickin' bone in my body'." Read more...

The space race forged immortal rock and roll guitars

From the first steps to the leap forward, Mashable is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the moon landing with a series that examines its significance — and why we haven’t been back.

Just beyond a long, elegant hall of mostly headless, ancient Greek statues at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City lies a chunk of Jimi Hendrix’s guitar, which the rock legend doused in lighter fluid, lit ablaze, and slammed into the ground at the Monterey International Pop Music Festival in June 1967. Wires still protrude from the smashed wood, which over a half-century ago radiated Hendrix’s shrieking, psychedelic notes through big amplifiers, and into the summer air Read more...

With all eyes on Libra, Bitcoin drops deep below $10,000

Posted: 17 Jul 2019 02:35 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

During the first day of Facebook's congressional hearing on Libra, the topic was largely Facebook itself, with cryptocurrencies and blockchain being a distant second.

And yet, most popular cryptocurrencies have been losing value as if the U.S. Senators have somehow been grilling them and not Facebook's David Marcus, who's about to spend some more unpleasant time at Congress today.

Bitcoin dived sharply below $10,000 on Tuesday, reaching a low of $9,214 on cryptocurrency exchange Binance. Other coins followed suit: Ethereum, XRP, Bitcoin Cash and Litecoin have all dived to monthly lows, bringing the total market cap of all cryptocurrencies to less than $250 billion.  Read more...

Trevor Noah breaks down Trump's weak defense of those racist tweets

Posted: 17 Jul 2019 02:11 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

Somewhat predictably, Donald Trump has defended his recent slew of racist tweets by saying that they weren't actually racist after all. "I don't have a Racist bone in my body!" he tweeted on Tuesday.

Needless to say, not everyone was convinced. On Tuesday night's edition of The Daily Show, Trevor Noah broke down Trump's weak defence — including his shouty assertion that anyone not happy in America "can leave".

"Wow," said Noah. "If you're not happy in America, you can leave. You know what's interesting, right? Trump says that now, but when he was running for president, his entire message was, 'America's failing, this country's not what it used to be, China's beating us.' Read more...

What you need to know about viral FaceApp's privacy policy

You might want to think twice before you use viral selfie app FaceApp.

The two-year-old app, which lets you alter photos of your face, once again shot to the App Store's top spot this week after celebs and others began sharing doctored photos of themselves. Like some of Snapchat's popular face filters, you can change photos of yourself so you appear older or younger, or "swap" genders.

It's a familiar gimmick at this point – and not one that's new for FaceApp— but the app has gone viral all the same. It's currently one of the most downloaded apps for both iOS and Android, as #faceappchallenge posts have taken over social media. Read more...

The Changing Face Of Politics In America

Posted: 17 Jul 2019 05:23 AM PDT

FOX News: Ocasio-Cortez gets new 2020 challenger: a Republican immigrant from Jamaica

EXCLUSIVE -- Scherie Murray, a New York businesswoman who immigrated from Jamaica as a child and is active in state Republican politics, is launching a campaign Wednesday for the congressional seat held by Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Fox News has learned.

In a phone interview, Murray, 38, confirmed her intention to run for the New York congressional seat as a Republican.

"There is a crisis in Queens, and it's called AOC," Murray told Fox News. "And instead of focusing on us, she's focusing on being famous. Mainly rolling back progress and authoring the job-killing Green New Deal and killing the Amazon New York deal."

Murray, who was born in Jamaica and moved to the United States when she was 9, is officially launching her campaign Wednesday with an introductory video that takes sharp jabs at the 29-year-old Ocasio-Cortez.

WNU Editor: A good friend of mine who works in Manhattan but lives across the river in New Jersey gave me a heads-up on Scherie Murray a few weeks ago. He is a moderate Democrat with mixed feelings when it comes to President Trump, but he likes her. Will she win .... no. But she is a symbol on where Republican politics and candidates are heading, and the growing role of immigrants in the electoral process.

Poll: Republican Support For President Trump Rises

Reuters: Republican support for Trump rises after racially charged tweets: Reuters/Ipsos poll

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Support for U.S. President Donald Trump increased slightly among Republicans after he lashed out on Twitter over the weekend in a racially charged attack on four minority Democratic congresswomen, a Reuters/Ipsos public opinion poll shows.

The national survey, conducted on Monday and Tuesday after Trump told the lawmakers they should "go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came," showed his net approval among members of his Republican Party rose by 5 percentage points to 72%, compared with a similar poll that ran last week.

Trump, who is seeking re-election next year, has lost support, however, with Democrats and independents since the Sunday tweetstorm.

WNU Editor: I have been closely following American politics for about 35 years. The last time that I saw this type of Republican support for their candidate was with President Reagan on the eve of the 1984 election. As for the Democrats .... here is my prediction. Regardless of who they pick, they will also be strongly supporting their candidate next year.

Were Democrat Supporters Shocked By What They Heard During The Democratic Presidential Debates In June?

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 10:00 PM PDT

From Instapundit: TOM FRIEDMAN REVIEWS RECENT EVENTS: 'Trump's Going to Get Re-elected, Isn't He?' "I'm struck at how many people have come up to me recently and said, "Trump's going to get re-elected, isn't he?" And in each case, when I drilled down to ask why, I bumped into the Democratic presidential debates in June. I think a lot of Americans were shocked by some of the things they heard there. I was."

So he's a week or two behind.

Plus: "Dear Democrats: This is not complicated! Just nominate a decent, sane person, one committed to reunifying the country and creating more good jobs." The problem is, they don't have any of those.

WNU Editor: I agree with Tom Friedman. The progressive Democrats that I know (and my brother is one of them), were not happy when they saw the above video clip. They will not vote for Trump, but their vote for the Democrat candidate will be done without enthusiasm. I disagree with Glenn Reynolds take that there are no Democrats committed to  reunifying the country and creating more good jobs. There is one Democrat candidate focused on the economy .... Tech investor and Trump supporter Peter Thiel thinks Elizabeth Warren is the most 'dangerous' Democratic candidate (CNBC).

In penetrating the surface, we found that most objects would go down about 5, maybe 6 inches, and then meet with gradual resistance. At the same time there was not much of a support force on either side, so we had to lean the flag back slightly in order for it to maintain this position. We Are The Mighty: 5 fastest military aircraft in service today

Every Air Force and Navy feels the need for speed. It's just a fact. When trying to scramble your defending aircraft, time is of the essence and speed is a critical element of that. Aircraft developers have come a very long way since the development of the first jet engine in the mid-20th Century. These days, an airframe that can't cruise at supersonic speeds might as well be a diesel-powered propeller plane.

It was a long and winding road human engineering took to get to the point where fighter aircraft have the radar cross section of bumblebee. Here are the fastest examples currently in service

The Guardian: House orders Pentagon to review if it exposed Americans to weaponised ticks

A New Jersey lawmaker suggests the government turned insects into bioweapons to spread disease and possibly released them

The US House of Representatives has called for an investigation into whether the spread of Lyme disease had its roots in a Pentagon experiment in weaponising ticks.

The House approved an amendment proposed by a Republican congressman from New Jersey, Chris Smith, instructing the defence department's inspector general to conduct a review of whether the US "experimented with ticks and other insects regarding use as a biological weapon between the years of 1950 and 1975".

America's Carriers Are In Trouble In The Next Great War

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 08:00 PM PDT

Reuters

National Interest: Navy Nightmare: America's Carriers Are in Trouble in the Next Great War

Here's why.

Hammes, however, is not in favor of scrapping America's carriers right away, and instead advocates continuing to use the current carriers until they are retired (the Navy will still have seven carriers in use until 2050 and four scheduled for retirement as late as 2070). Still, Hammes stands by his analysis of the carriers' vulnerability, noting their inability to effectively counter swarm tactics, their diminishing value as a military deterrent, and the difficulty of safely repairing a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier anywhere near major ports should one ever take any serious damage.

Former President Bill Clinton remarked in 1993 that, "when word of a crisis breaks out in Washington, it's no accident that the first question that comes to everyone's lips is: 'where's the nearest carrier?'" President Clinton's sentiment still rings true today.

Would Russia And China Build Nuclear-Powered Aircraft Carriers Together?

David Axe, National Interest: Imagine If Russia and China Built Nuclear-Powered Aircraft Carriers Together

Should the U.S. Navy be worried?

China could partner with Russia in order to develop nuclear-powered icebreakers.

While the vessels would be useful in their own right, the main benefit could be to help Beijing refine reactor technology for use in a future nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, according to the Hong Kong South China Morning Post.

The Chinese navy already possesses two conventionally-powered flattops and is building a third.

Turkey Shrugs-Off EU Sanctions Over Cyprus Natural Gas Drilling

Al Jazeera: Turkey says EU measures won't deter it from drilling off Cyprus

Statement by foreign ministry comes after EU takes punitive steps against Ankara's activities in Eastern Mediterranean.

Turkey has said punitive European Union measures against it will not deter it from continuing to search for oil and gas off the coast of Cyprus.

On Monday, the foreign ministers of the EU agreed to call off high-level political meetings, suspend negotiations on an aviation deal and reduce EU accession funding earmarked for Turkey.

The ministers of the 28-member bloc, of which Cyprus is a member, also invited the European Investment Bank to review its lending activities in Turkey, notably with regard to sovereign-backed lending.

Jon Healey, L.A. Times: AOC and the Democrats gave Trump the fight he was looking for

President Trump is a gut-level politician who often seems to act on unfiltered impulse.

But his string of recent tweets about the self-styled "Squad" of liberal House Democrats feel calculated, not caffeinated. And, despite what a number of GOP pundits have argued, they were not politically stupid. Demeaning, offensive, nativist, unbecoming a president — yes to all that too. But Trump offends for a reason, and his motives for this latest fusillade of foulness are pretty obvious.

U.S. House Votes To Condemn Trump 'Racist Comments'

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 04:22 PM PDT

NBC: House votes to condemn Trump 'racist comments', with only four Republicans backing the measure

The vote was delayed for hours following GOP complaints that Speaker Pelosi's remarks had violated House rules.

The Democrat-controlled House of Representatives passed a resolution on Tuesday night condemning President Donald Trump for his "racist comments" about four Democratic congresswomen of color.

The resolution passed largely along party lines — 235 Democrats joined by only four Republican supported the measure — following hours of back-and-forth and gamesmanship between Republicans and Democrats, which included a GOP objection to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's remarks about Trump, and whether she would be allowed to keep speaking on the floor.

WNU Editor: The four Republicans who voted in favour of the resolution, which "strongly condemns President Donald Trump's racist comments that have legitimized and increased fear and hatred of new Americans and people of color," were Reps. Will Hurd of Texas, Fred Upton of Michigan, Susan Brooks of Indiana and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania. Rep. Justin Amash, who announced his departure from the Republican Party earlier this month, also voted in favour of the resolution.

Chaos In The U.S. Congress

Daily Mai: CHAOS! Pelosi paralyzes her own House when she WALKS OUT as Republicans demand her words calling Trump a 'racist' be stricken from the record and temporary chairman slams his gavel and 'abandons' his post

* The House voted to allow Speaker Nancy Pelosi to call Trump a 'racist'
* Republicans had asked for her remarks to be stricken from the record
* But the Democratic-controlled House voted in favor of the speaker
* 'These comments from the White House are disgraceful and disgusting and these comments are racist,' Pelosi said
* The House floor froze for over an hour as lawmakers debated over what to do after Pelosi made her comments and then walked out
* House guidelines specifically say 'remarks may not refer to the president' as a 'racist' or as 'having made a bigoted or racist statement'
* In an unprecedented move, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, who was presiding over the floor, dropped his gavel and announced 'I abandon the chair'

The debate over a Democratic resolution to condemn Donald Trump's tweets froze the House floor for over an hour Tuesday after a Republican lawmaker objected to Speaker Nancy Pelosi calling the president a 'racist.'

'I stand by my statement. I'm proud of the attention being called to it because what the president said was completely inappropriate,' Pelosi told reporters in the Capitol as the House voted whether or not to strike her remarks from the record.

The Democratically-controlled chamber sided with Pelosi and allowed her comment to stand: 190-232.

Pelosi took to the House floor Tuesday afternoon to criticize the president for repeatedly going after the 'squad' - four of young, Democratic, progressive lawmakers.

WNU Editor: I think people are getting tired of hearing one side always accusing the other side of being a racist/Nazi/etc. when they disagree. This has been the modus operandi of Democrats for years, and from what I have seen so far this afternoon, they certainly do not know how to handle it when they are now facing an opponent who fights back. As for this House vote, we are seeing Trump derangement syndrome on full display, so make some popcorn and enjoy the show.

Reuters: EU braces for no-deal Brexit or another delay under Boris Johnson

BRUSSELS/LONDON (Reuters) - The European Union is bracing for either a no-deal Brexit or another delay if Boris Johnson becomes Britain's prime minister next week with a pledge to renegotiate a deal the bloc says it will not reopen.

The three-year Brexit crisis could be about to deepen as Johnson's pledge to leave the EU "do or die" — with or without a deal — on Oct. 31 sets Britain on a collision course with the bloc's 27 other leaders and his own parliament.

NATO Report Accidentally Reveals The Location Of U.S. Nuclear Weapons In Europe

Stars and Stripes/Washington Post: Location of US nuclear weapons in Europe accidentally revealed in report from NATO body

A recently released - and subsequently deleted - document published by a NATO-affiliated body has sparked headlines in Europe with an apparent confirmation of a long-held open secret: U.S. nuclear weapons are being stored in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey.

A version of the document, titled "A new era for nuclear deterrence? Modernisation, arms control and allied nuclear forces," was published in April. Written by a Canadian senator for the Defense and Security Committee of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, the report assessed the future of the organization's nuclear deterrence policy.

But what would make news months later is a passing reference that appeared to reveal the location of roughly 150 U.S. nuclear weapons being stored in Europe.

Iran's Supreme Leader Says No To Diplomacy

Reuters: Iran to keep reducing nuclear deal commitments in stand-off with U.S.: supreme leader

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran's supreme leader upped the ante in a volatile stand-off with the United States on Tuesday, warning Tehran would continue removing restraints on its nuclear program and retaliate for the seizure of an Iranian oil tanker.

Tensions have spiked since U.S. President Donald Trump last year abandoned world powers' 2015 nuclear deal with Iran under which it agreed to curtail its enrichment of uranium in return for the lifting of global sanctions crippling its economy.

European parties to the pact decided on Monday not to trigger the deal's dispute mechanism in favor of pursuing more talks and avert any U.S.-Iranian military conflict, but took no action to shield Iran against a sanctions clampdown by Trump.

Iran's Foreign Minister Says Door Is 'Wide Open' To Negotiation With The U.S. If Sanctions Are Lifted

NBC: Door is 'wide open' to negotiation if Trump lifts his sanctions on Iran, Zarif says

Iran's top diplomat says it could have developed nuclear weapons but made a decision "a long time ago" not to build the bomb.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Monday his country does not want a war with the U.S. but said President Donald Trump must lift harsh economic sanctions on Tehran to clear the way for negotiations.

In an interview with NBC Nightly News' Lester Holt, Zarif said the door is "wide open" to diplomacy if Trump removes the array of sanctions he has imposed since 2017 that have slashed the country's oil exports and damaged its economy.

"Once those sanctions are lifted, then ... the room for negotiation is wide open," Zarif said during a visit to New York for a U.N. conference.

Speculation Is Growing That Iran Seized An Oil Tanker When It Travelled Through The Strait Of Hormuz

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 10:29 AM PDT

FOX News: UAE oil tanker missing in Strait of Hormuz after drifting into Iranian waters

An oil tanker traveling through the tiny strip of water located in the mouth of the Persian Gulf stopped transmitting its location more than two days ago when it drifted into Iranian waters.

It is not clear what happened to the Panamanian-flagged oil tanker – which is based in the United Arab Emirates – on Saturday night as it traveled through the Strait of Hormuz, but its apparent disappearance has raised concerns amid heightened tensions between Iran and several Western nations.

The Riah, a 190-foot oil tanker, typically made trips from Dubai and Sharjah on the UAE's west coast before going through the strait and heading to Fujairah on the UAE's east coast.

Chinese Diplomats Are Now Using Twitter To Defend Beijing

BEIJING (Reuters) - Tweets from Chinese diplomats abroad, including seasoned ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai, have opened a fresh front in Beijing's increasingly assertive approach to diplomacy and propaganda and may be a sign of things to come.

Cui sent his first tweets just last week from his newly opened Twitter account, including one about Taiwan, the self-ruled and democratic island China claims as its own, garnering thousands of comments.

"#Taiwan is part of #China. No attempts to split China will ever succeed. Those who play with fire will only get themselves burned. Period," Cui tweeted, after China threatened sanctions on U.S. firms selling weapons to Taiwan.

And over the weekend, a series of tweets defending China's policies in the far western region of Xinjiang by diplomat Zhao Lijian, the no.2 at the Chinese embassy in Pakistan, lambasted the United States for its own human rights problems and what he described as hypocrisy.

U.S. Manufacturing ‘Is In A Recession'

Market Watch: U.S. manufacturing 'is in recession,' Fed's data show

The numbers: The U.S. factory sector declined in the three months ended in June, the second straight quarterly decline, the Federal Reserve said Tuesday.

For the second quarter, production was down 1.2% after a 1.9% decline in the first three months of the year. Manufacturing fell at a 2.2% rate in the second quarter after a 1.9% drop in the first three months of the year.

For June, industrial production was flat, slightly below the 0.1% gain expected by Wall Street economists.

Compared to 12 months earlier, industrial production rose 1.3%.

Capacity in use slipped to 77.9% in June from 78.1 in the prior month.

A Man Tried to Smuggle Cocaine Into Spain by Hiding It Under His Toupee

Posted: 17 Jul 2019 01:56 AM PDT

Spanish police said Tuesday that a Colombian man was detained at Barcelona’s international airport for trying to smuggle cocaine into the country under a toupee.

The unnamed man, who arrived on a flight from Bogota, attempted to hide cocaine worth $34,000 under a large hairpiece covered by a hat, reports Reuters. The drugs weighed about one pound.

Reuters reports that the man aroused the suspicion of police due to his nervous appearance and unusually large hairpiece.

“There is no limit to the inventiveness of drug traffickers trying to mock controls,” the police said in a statement cited by Reuters.

Police posted a photo of the man on their Twitter account, apparently still wearing the toupee with the contraband stowed underneath it.

More than 220 pounds of cocaine were seized by police at the airport last year, according to Reuters.

Sudan’s Ruling Military Has Signed a Power-Sharing Deal With Opposition Leaders

Posted: 17 Jul 2019 01:32 AM PDT

(CAIRO) — Sudan’s ruling military and the pro-democracy movement on Wednesday signed a political document that’s part of a power-sharing deal meant to end the country’s deadlock after weeks of stalled talks.

The two sides — representatives from the military council and the Forces for Declaration of Freedom and Change — signed a so-called political declaration, one of two documents that are part of the deal, at a ceremony in Khartoum.

The other document, a constitutional declaration, is likely to be signed within days, perhaps as early as Friday.

The signing is a key step in Sudan’s transition after months of street protests that prompted the military to oust autocratic ruler Omar al-Bashir and take over the country in April. But the protesters, though initially cheering al-Bashir’s ouster, remained on the streets for several weeks, demanding the military hand over power to a civilian authority.

The military and the pro-democracy movement, which represents the protesters, had agreed earlier this month on a joint sovereign council that will rule Sudan for a little over three years while elections are organized.

The power-sharing deal, which also includes a Cabinet appointed by the pro-democracy movement, was meant to end weeks of deadlock between the two sides since a Khartoum protest sit-in was razed by security forces last month.

Protest organizers say security forces killed at least 128 people during that dispersal and subsequent crackdown. Authorities, however, put the death toll at 61, including three members of the security forces.

And on June 30, tens of thousands of demonstrators flooded the streets of Khartoum in the biggest show of numbers in the uprising. At least 11 people were killed in clashes with security forces, according to protest organizers.

The two sides subsequently resumed talks and also agreed on an independent Sudanese investigation into the deadly crackdown, though it is unclear if anyone will be held accountable.

“We are ushering in a new era,” Ibrahim al-Amin, a negotiator for the protesters said at Wednesday’s signing ceremony. “The upcoming government will be a government of all Sudanese, for all citizens … we have suffered enough from the totalitarian dictatorial regime.”

Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, deputy head of the military council, hailed the signing as a “historical moment in Sudan” as representatives of both sides shook hands.

Wednesday’s development came after intensive efforts and pressure form regional and international powers. The African Union and Ethiopia led the diplomatic mediation, following the deadly break-up of the Khartoum protest camp in June.

A new report which maps out how North Korea obtains luxury goods says that the country obtains the items through sophisticated networks, despite sanctions against the country.

The report by Washington D.C.-based non-profit research organization the Center for Advanced Defense Studies (C4ADS) says that as many as 90 countries serve as a source of luxury goods to Kim Jong Un’s regime, despite a U.N. resolution prohibiting the export of such items to the country.

Authors of Lux & Loaded: Exposing North Korea’s Strategic Procurement Networks used publicly available information such as registry filings, trade records, vessel tracking data and customs information to follow the movement of luxury goods into the country.

“The Kim regime continues to maintain sophisticated procurement capabilities through U.S.-allied countries despite sanctions,” the report says.

North Korea’s leader uses perks like gifts of western luxury goods to keep officials loyal to him, and he is frequently spotted in luxury cars. He raised eyebrows when he arrived to meet Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for a meeting in Pyongyang in a Rolls-Royce Phantom, a car for which the starting retail price is around $450,000. His wife was criticized for sporting a Christian Dior handbag retailing for $1,600 while millions of people starved in her country.

The report tracked items like more than 800 luxury vehicles that made it into North Korea, including two armored Mercedes-Maybach S600 Guards shipped in October 2018. It says the vehicles originated in Germany, the Netherlands and Thailand before being transshipped through China, Japan, South Korea, and the Russian Far East.

Consumer goods including name-brand clothes, designer cosmetics and iPhones are all imported into the country, C4ADS says.

Experts say that stopping the flow of luxury goods into the country could have a real impact. “If sanctions are tightened and luxury goods are blocked from entering North Korea, the regime’s legitimacy would be challenged,” Lami Kim, a Lecturer in the Department of Politics and Public Administration at the University of Hong Kong and an adjunct fellow at the foreign policy research institute the Pacific Forum told TIME.

“Since economic hardships brought Kim Jong Un to the dunuclearization negotiating table, it is imperative for the international community to tighten sanctions implementation to block luxury goods form going into North Korea,” Kim says.

U.S. Sanctions Myanmar Generals for Ethnic Cleansing of Rohingya

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 11:43 PM PDT

The State Department announced Tuesday that it has brought sanctions against four Myanmar military generals, including the commander-in-chief, for their roles in ethnic cleansing of the country’s Rohingya Muslim minority.

The sanctions were issued for their involvement in “gross violations of human rights, including extrajudicial killings, against Rohingya” from August to September 2017, the State Department said in a press release.

Myanmar’s military began a violent crackdown in late 2017 against the Rohingya, a mostly Muslim ethnic minority, in Myanmar’s westernmost Rakhine State. U.N. investigators determined that the violent campaign of arson, rape and murder was carried out with genocidal intent.

The men — Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing; Deputy Commander-in-Chief Soe Win; Brigadier General Than Oo; Brigadier General Aung Aung — will be banned from entering the U.S. Their immediate family members will also face travel restrictions.

“These four senior officials are well-known to the international community to be responsible for gross human rights violations across the country, not only in Rakhine State but also in Kachin and Shan states over the past decade,” a State Department spokesperson said in a teleconference with reporters, also referring to civil conflicts in other parts of the country.

Rights groups welcomed the sanctions as a good, albeit belated, first step toward accountability.

“Although the sanctions are limited to travel restrictions, the move signifies that Washington is finally getting serious about accountability,” Senior Advocate for Human Rights Dan Sullivan of NGO Refugees International said in a statement. “It also acknowledges what the State Department itself has documentedthat ethnic cleansing has taken place in Myanmar with virtual impunity.”

These are not the first sanctions the U.S. has imposed on those responsible for the atrocities against the Rohingya. Five military generals and two military units have already been sanctioned. But experts say more should be done, including a referral to the ICC for criminal prosecution.

“In order to truly promote accountability, the United States should also lead international efforts to refer Myanmar to the International Criminal Court or to establish an ad hoc tribunal,” Sullivan says.

About a million Rohingya remain stuck in slum-like refugee camps in the coastal district of Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh, where they fled from violence and persecution.

An Australian Fisherman Found a Message in a Bottle Written 50 Years Ago

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 11:16 PM PDT

(CANBERRA, Australia) — A fisherman man said on Wednesday he was looking for the author of a message in a bottle found off the southern Australian coast 50 years after it was written.

Paul Elliot told Australian Broadcasting Corp. that he and his son Jyah found the bottle on the west coast of Eyre Peninsula in South Australia state while fishing.

Elliot said he was looking for the author Paul Gibson, who described himself in the note as a 13-year-old English boy traveling in a cruise ship along the southern Australian coast from Fremantle in the west to Melbourne in the east.

Government oceanographer David Griffin said the bottle could not have remained afloat for 50 years off the south coast because “the ocean never stays still.”

Griffin suspected that the bottle had been buried on a beach for years then refloated by a storm.

“If it had been dropped in anywhere in the ocean somewhere south of Australia, then there’s no way it’s going to stay actually at sea moving around for more than a year or two,” Griffin said.

The author gave his position as “1000 miles east of Fremantle.” However it is not clear whether the author actually meant 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) out of Fremantle, which would have included a journey south along the west coast before turning east.

Hundreds of thousands of Britons migrated to Australia in the 1960s with the Australian government subsidizing their fares. Children traveled for free.

But a quarter of them returned to Britain within a few years when life in Australia fell short of their expectations.

Brazil Police Shut Down a Factory Making Fake Ferraris and ‘Shamborghinis’

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 09:49 PM PDT

(RIO DE JANEIRO) — Brazilian police say they’ve shut down a clandestine factory that was producing fake Ferraris and sham Lamborghinis.

A father and son who owned the workshop in the southern state of Santa Catarina have been arrested on industrial property charges.

Police said the cars were being offered on social media for $45,000 to $60,000 — a small fraction of the price of the real thing.

Officials didn’t say what sort of parts were used to build the vehicles, but they distributed photos showing sleek bodies, as well as badges and accessories emblazoned with the Italian brands.

Monday’s raid followed a complaint by the Italian companies.

Eight partially finished vehicles were seized in the raid, and police said they are investigating how many were made.

Ursula von der Leyen Confirmed as First Female President of the European Commission

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 08:14 PM PDT

(BRUSSELS) — Ursula von der Leyen was confirmed as the European Commission president Tuesday, becoming the first woman to hold one of the most prestigious positions in the European Union and who will be one of the most prominent faces from the bloc on the world stage.

The European Parliament voted 383-327 with 22 abstentions to approve von der Leyen’s nomination. The confirmation required an absolute majority of 374 votes and the outgoing German defense minister scraped through with barely nine votes to spare in a cliffhanger vote.

“A majority is a majority in politics,” she said when questioned about her narrow escape.

Von der Leyen will replace Jean-Claude Juncker when his term expires at the end of October.

She was put forward as a last-minute candidate by EU leaders as part over an overall appointments package, sidestepping parliamentary wishes. Many legislators felt cold-shouldered and said they would oppose her out of principle, not over personal considerations.

“There was a great deal of resentment,” she said.

Von der Leyen insisted the challenges facing the EU, from climate to migration and internal division, were such that there was no time to look back.

“My message to all of you is: let us work together constructively,” she said.

Earlier in the day, Von der Leyen set out her political objectives on a greener, gender-equal Europe where the rule of law continues to hold sway.

Her approval was a key part in the package of top jobs that EU leaders agreed upon early this month. Under the deal, the free-market liberal Renew Europe group got Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel as European Council president and the Socialists won the top parliament job. France’s Christine Lagarde was put forward as head of the European Central Bank.

Von der Leyen told lawmakers in Strasbourg that the gender element as embodied by herself and Lagarde will be an essential part of her job.

“I will ensure full gender equality” in her team of 28 commissioners. “I want to see as many men as women around the college table,” she said.

Pointing out that since its inception in 1958, less than 20% of commissioners had been women, she said: “We represent half of our population. We want our fair share.”

The gender breakthrough was welcome across much of the plenary.

“It is a great day for Europe to have a woman elected to lead the European Commission,” said Dacian Ciolos, leader of the liberal Renew Europe group.

The rest of the commission team, which prepares a wide range of legislation from climate change to farm subsidies and digital rules, will be proposed by the EU member states, which have the right to one each.

Von der Leyen insisted that, despite euroskeptic governments like Italy, Poland and Hungary, she would only work with pro-European politicians.

“I want a commission that is working to strengthen Europe to position Europe in this world in its appropriate role,” she said.

“None of us on its own will be as successful in tackling the problems as we are together — 28 member states,” she said.

Officials in the von der Leyen camp had long acknowledged that the vote would be a cliffhanger. She was set to get the majority of votes from her EPP Christian Democrats, the S&D socialists and the RE liberals. They were part of a grand coalition sharing out the top jobs.

Still, with dissent even within those groups, it long was too close to call.

During her address to the parliament, von der Leyen set out her political lines for the next few years and immediately addressed what she sees as the biggest challenge: climate change.

“I want Europe to become the first climate-neutral continent in the world by 2050,” she said, adding she would work out “a green deal for Europe in the first 100 days” of her office. It would include rules to improve on the current goal of reducing emissions by 40% by 2030.

“It will need investment on a major scale,” and funds would be available for nations, mainly in eastern Europe, still depending on polluting fossil fuels, she said.

She said that she would set up a climate division within the European Investment Bank to “unlock 1 trillion euros of investment over the next decade.”

Despite the need for votes to get the absolute majority, she did insist that her European Commission would continue to be at least as tough as now on countries like Poland and Hungary, which have been accused of disrespecting Western democratic values when it comes to the rule of law.

“There can be no compromise when it comes to respecting the rule of law. There never will be. I will ensure that we use our full and comprehensive toolbox at European level,” she said.

The U.S. Helped Defeat Ebola in 2014. Now, We’re Watching a Crisis Become a Catastrophe

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 11:47 AM PDT

Imagine a firefighter battling a blaze while the sprinkler system emits gasoline. This is the current state of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

So far, over 1,600 people have died from the virus and thousands more have been infected. While this outbreak is not yet at the scale of the last Ebola crisis that claimed more than 11,000 lives, it has the potential to be even deadlier.

With each passing day, the virus keeps spreading. This week, the first case of Ebola was discovered in Goma, a transportation hub on the border of Rwanda. In order to keep pace with the virus, the United States and the international community must start treating this outbreak like the crisis it is.

In 2014, I sat on the National Security Council and helped lead the United States’ Ebola response. At the time, I thought the Ebola outbreak was the most terrifying public health emergency that I would ever witness in my lifetime. It turns out that I was wrong.

The challenges of this outbreak are unprecedented: poor infrastructure, distrust in health workers and lack of access to basic medical care. A big enough barrier on their own, together they make containing this outbreak in the DRC harder and more complex than the last outbreak in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea.

This instability did not come about overnight. The DRC is rich in resources but has been historically plagued by poor governance and violent conflict. For decades, DRC has failed to make adequate investments in basic healthcare and health infrastructure, the first line of defense against disease outbreaks like Ebola. In 2016, the total annual government spending on health care in DRC was just $3 per person.

Years of interethnic violence has created an atmosphere in the DRC where mistrust of authority is rife. In a recent survey, 25 percent of Congolese respondents said that Ebola wasn’t even real. This lack of trust, along with the ongoing turbulence, has led to attacks against health care workers and clinics which has endangered the entire emergency response.

Make no mistake: Nothing about beating Ebola, or any global health epidemic for that matter, is easy. That’s why the current U.S. administration and the international community would be wise to learn from the mistakes and successes of the last outbreak.

My biggest regret from the last Ebola response is that the world didn’t scale up earlier and faster. The 2014 crisis was unlike anything we had seen before and it exposed how ill-prepared America and the world were to respond to infectious disease threats.

But when America did lead, the rest of the world followed. The United States rallied technical experts and leaders from governments all over the world to launch a coordinated response to the Ebola crisis in Western Africa. Together, we leveraged American investments to yield new commitments from others and reminded the world that when there’s a moral imperative to act on global health, we will.

Now, this White House needs to decide whether it’s ready to answer that same call and lead. The World Health Organization (WHO) has only received half of the requested funds that are needed to fight the outbreak. While the United States certainly cannot solve this problem alone, we must rally the international community to fight this disease that knows no borders.

We also need to get out of our own way. The United States has sent Centers for Disease Control personnel and USAID Disaster Assistance Response Teams—some of the most talented and courageous professionals on the planet—to DRC, but for security reasons, our government has kept them away from the areas hardest-hit by the virus. It’s risky of course, but our best resources need to be on the front line, not the sideline.

As someone who has helped fight this ugly disease before, my experience compels me to speak out to Republicans, Democrats and anyone who is in a position of influence about the steps we can take to help control this outbreak. Right now, we’re watching a crisis turn into a catastrophe. We have the tools to defeat Ebola. What we’re missing is the political will. The time to start caring about Ebola isn’t when it reaches the shores of the United States or Europe, it’s now.

If we allow this inferno to engulf more communities and spread to more countries, we will not have Africa, the World Health Organization, or others to scapegoat. All we will need to assign blame is a mirror.

On the Cusp of Power, Boris Johnson’s Inflammatory Language on Islam Returns to Haunt Him

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 09:14 AM PDT

As the final live debate of the Conservative leadership contest came to an end on Monday evening, the two men competing to be Britain’s next Prime Minister turned to one another, smiled, and bantered out of range of the room’s microphones.

Officially rivals, Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt both seemed to recognize that the race to be the U.K.’s next Prime Minister had already been decided, even though the winner would not be announced until July 23. Johnson was the clear favorite among the Conservative Party members who will decide the contest when the starting gun was fired last month, and remains ahead coming out of the race.

By the end of Monday evening, the pair were joking with the audience, and one another. “I don’t think [the debate] changed very much from what we already knew,” Johnson told TIME moments after the event.

But while the leadership contest appears to be a foregone conclusion, its final weeks have been bruising for Johnson. Newspapers scrutinizing his past as a journalist and author have unearthed examples of past Islamophobic comments. They haven’t had to look far; in 2018, he likened Muslim women who wear the full-face veil to “bank robbers” and “letterboxes,” comments that prompted the Muslim Council of Britain to accuse him of pandering to the far-right. On Monday, the Guardian published excerpts from a 2006 book in which he had written that Islam “inherently inhibits the path to progress and freedom.”

And when, on Monday evening, Johnson was quizzed over a column in which he referred to gay men as “tank-topped bumboys,” he dismissed concerns over his past remarks. “If you’re going to excavate and disinter every single quotation from the millions of words I have written, you can of course try to twist things one way or the other,” he said.

That explanation might placate the roughly 124,000 Conservative Party members who have a vote in the ongoing leadership contest, but the wider public are yet to be convinced he is the right man for this job. In a May poll by YouGov, just 28% of U.K. adults surveyed said he would make a good Prime Minister, compared to 54% who said he would do badly.

That should be a cause for concern even if he does become leader. His ruling Conservative party has a parliamentary majority of just three votes, which could shrink even further if lawmakers abandon ship over his approach to Brexit. If that ends up forcing a general election later this year, Johnson would have to convince the entire electorate to put their trust in him as a leader.

So far, the contest to be Britain’s next Prime Minister has been fought on what appeals to Conservative party members, rather than the public as a whole. When Johnson eventually does go to the country, his past comments may come back to haunt him once again.

Greek Police Have Arrested a Suspect in the Killing of an American Researcher on Crete

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 08:09 AM PDT

Greek police have arrested a suspect in the murder of an American molecular biologist, who they say was run down by a local man during her daily walk, put in the trunk of his car, raped and abandoned in a nearby tunnel.

The national police held a press conference on Tuesday afternoon where they confirmed the arrest of a local 27-year-old man and said they have “solved” the case of the death of 59-year-old Suzanne Eaton. They did not release the name of the suspect.

Eaton, a molecular biologist working as a research leader at the Max Planck Institute in Dresden, German, was visiting the Greek island of Crete to attend a conference at the Orthodox Academy of Crete when she went missing in early July.

After a nearly week-long search by authorities and family, Eaton’s body was discovered 7 miles from her hotel in a man-made cave that was reportedly dug by Nazi troops occupying Crete during World War II.

Hellenic Police spokeswoman Eleni Papathanasiou described Eaton’s final moments.

According to Papathanasiou, at around noon on July 2, Eaton went for her daily walk, leaving behind her cellphone and other personal items in her hotel room. She said autopsy results found that she died shortly after noon and the official cause of death was suffocation––adding that Eaton’s body also had “many broken ribs, face, bones, and multiple injuries at both hands.”

Police said the suspect confessed to seeing Eaton walk toward a local memorial and “motivated by sexual satisfaction, he hit her twice with his car to stop her.”

The suspect told police he then took the unconscious Eaton and put her in the trunk of his car and moved her to the ventilation drain of a cave, where he raped and abandoned her.

Police said after abandoning Eaton’s body the suspect re-blocked the entrance to the drain with a wooden pallet and cleaned the trunk of his car at a graveyard, attempting to remove all forensic evidence.

It was not clear from the police account whether Eaton was killed in the bunker or in the car.

Hellenic Police
Photo Courtesy Hellenic Police Hellenic Police say a 27-year-old suspect placed American biologist Suzanne Eaton in the trunk of his car and disposed of her body.

Police Major General Constantinos Lagoudakis said the track marks left by the suspect’s car were what helped police narrow their search and arrest the suspect.

“The identification of tracks from vehicle’s wheels, that were leading to the shelter’s drain proved an evidence of critical importance that directed our investigation,” he told reporters on Tuesday. “This fact, in combination with the position of the body in the area, strongly supported the argument that the victim was transferred to this location.”

Lagoudakis says during questioning the suspect “provided too many conflicting answers and under the light of the collected evidence, he confessed his crime.”

Eaton was on her fourth trip to Crete before she was killed. Police said she had made similar trips to the island for other scientific conferences where she would present research. The 59-year-old mother of two was married to British scientist Tony Hyman. She was born in Oakland, Calif. and received her undergraduate degree in biology from Brown University and a Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of California, Los Angeles, according to her Max Planck Institute biography.

On a memorial site, Eaton’s son Max remembered his mother as a “remarkable woman,” who “managed to live a life with few regrets.”

“I have many fond memories of her and my father playing duets together, filling our home with a beautiful, joyful sound that was unique to them, and I shall forever cherish the memory of lying on the floor, watching and listening to the thing that brought them together,” he posted.

India may be quietly winning the trade war between US and China

Posted:

NEW DELHI: Amid rising trade tensions, American importers of sports goods, toys, stationery, cables and electronics parts have reached out to Indian sellers of these goods as Chinese products become expensive due to the US-China trade war.The US is looking to replace Chinese exports with Indian products in at least seven product lines including vulcanised rubber, footwear and kitchen accessories. "Importers in the US have shown keen interest in our products in at least seven tariff lines," said an official in the know of the details. "We have a five-six month period to make use of this opportunity before Vietnam and Cambodia fill in the space vacated by China."India exported these items worth $1.5 billion in FY19 to the US, and the industry is keen to ramp up capacity to meet the potential demand. 70251086 "We are getting enquiries in large numbers from the US to replace Chinese exports of toys, footwear, apparel and engineering goods," said Federation of Indian Export Organisations president Sharad Kumar Saraf."There is scope to increase exports of these products by 25%." He added that the inquiries have increased since the US' announcement to impose a 25% duty on some Chinese products."Though it is difficult to put a number to the queries received, in case of footwear, an American importer wants one million pairs annually. This is beyond our existing capacity," said an industry insider, requesting anonymity.Saraf said industry can meet the higher demand by increasing production by at least 20%.CHINESE CHECKERSThe enquiries have come at a time when India's exports to China declined in June & the country is also staring at a rapidly diminishing trade surplus with the US. Exports to China fell by a sharp 14.1% as the country struggled with the impact of the trade war with the US—its GDP growth slowed to a 27-year low of 6.2% in the June quarter.Separately, the department of commerce has identified 203 products where exports to the US could be increased by replacing Chinese exports as it already has market access for these items and is a competitor of China."Moreover, China is now increasingly exporting more from Hong Kong and could use that route to export to the US," the official said.India's shipments to Hong Kong dropped 9.68% in June.As per the official, Beijing has already reduced prices by 4-5% so as not to lose market to Indian suppliers.

Govt goes job hunting for stranded Jet staff

Posted:

NEW DELHI: The government may not have extended support to now-defunct Jet Airways, but it has promised to facilitate employment to job-less airline staff. The Civil Aviation Ministry is in touch with other private airlines such as SpiceJet and IndiGo to assist Jet staff get meaningful employment.Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday said that a website would be launched listing staff of Jet Airways and help find employment in other private entities."We are also producing a website which is ready. I wish I had the capacity of telling you that the website is up. Every employee would be listed there and the prospects for their re-employment or employment will be facilitated by the government," Puri said while replying to Members in the Rajya Sabha on the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (Amendment) Bill, 2019.The Minister, however, said that government can not assume responsibility for a business failure conducted by a private party.Referring to Jet Airways, Puri said he was sensitive to (business) failure and willing to see what can be done within the governmental system to cushion that failure."But to suggest that a private sector entity goes belly up and the government has to take the responsibility I don't think that is correct," the Minister said.Run out of cash, Jet Airways had suspended its entire operations on April 17. Subsequently, the government re-allocated its slots and foreign traffic rights to rival carriers. Lenders to the airline led by State Bank of India (SBI) have initiated bankruptcy proceedings against it after all attempts to rope in a buyer failed. Before the airline suspended its operation, it had nearly 20,000 staff on its rolls. Several hundreds of them are learnt to have joined other carriers.Replying to Members on the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (Amendment) Bill, 2019, he also countered a comment that airfares had gone up.

The proposal that may hit H-1B spouses hard

Posted:

MUMBAI: A recently released research paper, points out that if the right to work, currently available to dependent spouses of a certain category of H-1B workers (viz: those who are on track for a green card) is revoked, their economic independence will be severely impacted.Spouses of H-1B workers come to US on an H-4 visa. If the primary H-1 holder is on track for a green card, the spouse can apply for an employment authorisation document (EAD). This gives the spouse the right to seek employment or be self-employed.As reported by TOI earlier, majority of the EADs have been allotted to women and a significant chunk to those from India. A recent report by a US based non-profit, the South Asian American Policy and Research Institute (SAAPRI), points out that "Rescinding work authorization for H-4 visa holders disproportionately impacts immigrant women and families from South Asian countries"On February 20, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued a proposal to remove H-4 dependent spouses from the class of aliens eligible for employment authorization, which has been under review for months with an uncertain decision date, adds its press release. It's report 'Defying Dependence' incorporates survey data from over 100 South Asian H-4 visa holders, who are dependent spouses of H-1B workers. According to SAAPRI's findings, since the adoption of the H-4 work authorization policy in 2015, 93% of all H-4 EADs were granted to South Asians and 93% were granted to women. "Current immigration policy is inequitable for those seeking citizenship and belonging in the US from select countries. This report aims to voice the experiences of those directly impacted by pending work authorization policy change in the H-4 community, the vast majority being South Asian women and families," said Dhara Puvar, Executive Director of SAAPRI. "Our findings reveal that the H-4 EAD rescission is a racial, economic, and gender justice issue." SAAPRI found that revoking the H-4 EAD would have a detrimental impact on economic independence for women, as H-4 visa holders could remain unemployed for up to 10 years or more without the EAD. This report, also discusses how the ability to work is closely tied to the mental health outcomes for H-4 EAD holders and their families. Urvashi, one of the H-4 EAD holders interviewed for the report, explains, "The H-4 EAD policy change was a life-giver to many women like me who were stuck at home, with no life of their own or sense of purpose." SAAPRI calls for the protection of the H-4 EAD program & a Congressional solution to the green card backlog, which will ensure that the work authorisation program does not remain a stop-gap solution to current immigration hurdles.

Bhushan Power ‘fund diversion’ under CBI lens

Posted:

MUMBAI: The Central Bureau of Investigation, which is probing Bhushan Power & Steel Ltd after it defaulted on Rs 47,204 crore of loans from 33 banks and financial institutions, is focussing on the alleged diversion of Rs 2,348 crore by the company to over 200 'shell and bogus' entities according to the FIR filed by it, people aware of the matter told ET.The modus operandi of the fund diversion was similar to the one used by Bhushan Steel Ltd, which once belonged to the Brij Bhushan Singal group. The amount involved matches the figure that the income-tax department said had been diverted over a seven-year period. In addition, the CBI uncovered discrepancies between the books of BPSL and the shell companies.Amounts totalling Rs 537.85 crore were diverted to 86 shell companies "without any obvious purpose" and were shown as payments made by BPSL, the CBI said in a complaint."Loans were availed of from 33 banks, purportedly for working capital and purchase of plant and machinery. However, they diverted over Rs 2,300 crore to over 200 shell companies," said one person."The directors/staff of BPSL entered into a criminal conspiracy among themselves and with unknown public servant of banks and others to cheat banks, financial institutions and government exchequer and in furtherance of the said criminal conspiracy, they dishonestly and fraudulently diverted huge amounts of bank funds through shell companies, entities," the CBI said in its FIR.In the case of Bhushan Steel, which was taken over by Tata Steel through insolvency resolution, the Serious Fraud Investigation Office stated that 157 companies were floated by former promoters Brij Bhushan Singal and Neeraj Singal as "conduits" for diversion of funds allegedly for the purchase of property."BSL caused wrongful loss to banks and financial institutions to the tune of Rs 20,879 crore by using letters of credit opened by submitting fake documents," the person said. The SFIO has filed charges against 284 individuals and entities including nine bankers in the BSL case, whereas in the BPSL case, the CBI is scrutinising the role of bankers.BPSL chairman Sanjay Singal and his wife Aarti, who were named in the FIR, were questioned by the CBI earlier this month and refuted the allegations. "They maintained that there wasn't any siphoning of funds and that all the documents pertaining to the company were before the National Company Law Tribunal," said another person aware of the matter. In addition, the central agency found discrepancies between the outstanding amounts shown in the books of BPSL and those of the bogus companies and entities as of March 31, 2017. While the outstanding amount in BPSL's books was over Rs 175 crore, those in the accounts of 10 shell entities totalled Rs 4.96 crore."This was shown by BPSL as capital advances given to various entities. However, when cross-checked with the books of the said companies, the figures were different. This shows falsification of books of accounts," said one person.70253578 The income-tax department, which probed alleged irregularities in BPSL, had stated that Rs 2,348 crore was transferred as advances to the accounts of more than 200 companies between April 2007 and March 2014. The tax department had searched the company's premises in Chandigarh in December 2014 and shared the findings with the CBI, the people aware of the matter said. The CBI said in its FIR filed in April that BPSL fraudulently transferred the money from four banks — Rs 2,125.15 crore from two accounts in Punjab National Bank's Industrial Finance Branch and an account in Oriental Bank of Commerce, Kolkata; Rs 158.16 crore from IDBI Bank, Kolkata, and Rs 65.15 crore from an account in UCO Bank, Kolkata.According to the agency, BPSL had taken a loan of Rs 4,423 crore from PNB. The bank, in a stock exchange filing earlier this month, reported a fraud of over Rs 3,800 crore. State Bank of India had advanced Rs 9,834 crore to BPSL, Bank of India Rs 2,484 crore and Bank of Baroda Rs 2,312 crore."Of the over Rs 537 crore fraudulently transferred by BPSL to dummy companies, Rs 30.90 crore was dishonestly and fraudulently diverted during the FY2013-14 alone from its account maintained with PNB, IFB branch, Chandigarh without any valid transactions in violation of the terms of loan sanction," the CBI states in the FIR.Emails sent to PNB and SBI remained unanswered as of press time. The agency is also probing over Rs 41 crore availed as Central Value Added Tax credit between October 2011 and April 2015 by allegedly submitting forged documents without any corresponding supply of goods.

Summer heat sends sale of ACs, refrigerators soaring

Posted:

KOLKATA: Overall consumption growth in rural areas might have been in the red, but soaring mercury and easy finance seem to have set the sale of white goods on the boil in these markets this summer. Companies, however, do not see this as a revival of consumer sentiment.Smaller cities and towns with less than half-a-million population recorded 1.6 times growth in sales of air-conditioners and 1.2 times in refrigerators between March and May as against last year, according to recent data from market research firm GfK India.Overall AC sales surged 29% and refrigerator sales were up 13% from a year ago during this period.GfK estimated that these semi-urban and rural markets account for one-fourth of the sale of premium frost-free refrigerators such as those with three doors or more, and side-by-side door models. Sales of these products have grown nearly four times (22%) faster in these markets as against a pan-India growth of 6% during the period under review, it said. In step, these markets have shown higher propensity for pricier split ACs, too."Consumers are not shying away from spending on necessities as has been witnessed by the surge in AC and refrigerator sales in smaller towns which are facing liquidity issues," said Godrej Appliances business head Kamal Nandi. He also pointed to the lower base effect behind the trend.Nikhil Mathur, managing director – India at GfK, said the sweeping heatwave in most parts of the country has pushed category sales growth, which is driven largely by first-time buyers and up-graders. "Consumption demand in lower-tier cities is picking up and holds immense potential for growth," he said.70253669 Sales of air-conditioners and refrigerators scaled to a five-year high this summer, despite a slump in discretionary spending. Spending on white goods has been traditionally considered as discretionary spending. Durables sales in 2018 recorded a marginal 2-3% rise over the last year. White goods makers, however, said the latest rural trend does not mean the overall industry is buoyant, since television sales remained flat despite the cricket world cup and washing machine sales failed to pick up in the monsoon. "Consumer sentiments are still low," Nandi said.Pradeep Bakshi, managing director at India's largest AC maker Voltas, said AC and refrigerator sales depend on climate and economic conditions.

Hikes at Vodafone Idea a sign of green shoots

Posted:

MUMBAI: In the first signs of a turnaround at loss-making Vodafone Idea, India's largest telco by subscribers has given its 10,000-odd employees an average raise of 9% and a bonus payout of 97% across levels. It has brought cheer to staff that has been facing immense uncertainty and got no hikes since June 2017.The telco's average increment is slightly better than that at rival Bharti Airtel, whose 16,000 employees got an average raise of 7.5% in June. But Airtel's variable payout was 100%, and unlike the erstwhile Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, both of which had not raised salaries last year, it had given a 7.5% average increment in 2018 too. Financial pressures forced Vodafone and Idea to merge in August 2018.Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio Infocomm, whose entry back in September 2016 had upended the market and pushed Vodafone India, Idea and Bharti Airtel's India operations into the red, has rolled out average variable of 90% for its 15,000-20,000 employees, with hikes due in August.None of the three companies responded to ET's queries.70253642 The industry has had to let go of one lakh employees since it went into consolidation mode, which saw the market shrink from eight private players to three. But with revenues stabilising, HR experts expect manpower to increase by 5% by the end of March 2020."The worst is getting over; after consolidation and better results, operators would like to retain their people. During the bad times, they had right-sized their organisations and would now like to keep their best resources," said Bharat Bhargava, partner, telecom advisory services, EY. "They would also like to attract the right talent pool as telcos become digital service providers."A person aware of the development said the best have got a 17% raise at Vodafone Idea. "The variable pay (read: bonus) is a flat 97% and the company has also ensured that the hike amount comes as arrears calculated from January, instead of June," he said.Since announcing their merger in early 2017, Vodafone India and Idea had brought in severe cost-cutting measures that included a hiring freeze, layoffs and no promotions or increments. The merged entity had manpower of around 17,000, down from a combined 22,000-plus pre-merger. It has continued to see steady exits of executives, both voluntary and involuntary – reducing employee strength to around 10,000 now.But with operational synergies kicking in during January-March, the outlook has improved.

In a world of negative yields, India bonds rally to 2016 highs

By Kartik GoyalSovereign Indian debt streaked ahead, sending benchmark yields to 2 1/2-year lows, amid growing expectations of deeper rate cuts by the central bank and increased foreign demand. The yield on 10-year bonds declined nine basis points to 6.34% on Tuesday after touching 6.31%, the lowest for the notes since Dec. 2016. Yields have slid more than 100 basis points since April-end amid bets the central bank may add to its three rate cuts this year. And negative-yielding debt in much of the developed world is adding to the allure of high-yielder like India, traders said."Indian bonds are facing a dream-like situation, given strong demand from foreign and local investors," said Anoop Verma, vice president for treasury at DCB Bank in Mumbai. "Yields are headed south and where they will stop is a million dollar question."70247424 Verma said he expects 10-year yield to drop further to 6% amid expectation that the central bank will lower rates by another 50 basis points this year.Other factors fueling demand for rupee bonds are:Retail inflation remains below RBI's 4% targetThe government's plan to tap the offshore debt market has eased concerns about excess supply from its record domestic borrowingsBanking liquidity has turned surplus, adding to demand for bondsForeigners bought about $1.1 billion of bonds this month, taking inflows for the year to $2.5 billion

Blockchain tech of big three at work in client projects

Posted:

MUMBAI: Clients of IBM, TCS and Wipro are starting to use blockchain solutions of these big technology firms in live projects, in a shift away from using them for proof of concept or pilot projects. These technology leaders have patented and developed blockchain services for the banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI), telecom and energy verticals, in a bid to capture a share of the increased spending in blockchain technology. The shift to live blockchain projects comes after clients realised blockchain technology's capability. "Organisations have matured in their understanding of blockchain through education and experimenting with PoCs (proofs of concept) …There is a change in culture where organisations want to move on from PoCs to working pilots," said Jitan Chandanani, blockchain offerings and engagement leader at IBM India/South Asia.IBM has seen success in projects heading up to large-scale production. Up to 20% of IBM's blockchain initiatives are in the PoC stage in areas where use cases are new and require vetting by the industry, and about 80% comes from a mix of pilot/production projects and advisory projects, Chandanani said. The company has, for instance, deployed blockchain solutions for the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) and Bharti Airtel to help curb spam calls.Wipro has also built a portfolio of patents in distributed ledger technology, which is at the heart of blockchain. "The maturity on the client side has gone up," said Krishnakumar N Menon, vice-president - service transformation and blockchain theme leader, Wipro. "Many of the deals, which are in a pilot stage, are planned to go into production compared to a year or two back where we would have done a PoC and discarded it and gotten into another PoC."Wipro's clients have realised the value in its blockchain offerings, and this is happening in the energy utility, manufacturing and consumer sectors, he said.In the BFSI sector, many clients engage in PoCs or pilot projects, but hesitate to move towards large-scale production, Menon said.TCS is also seeing success in making projects go live. "Interoperability of blockchain solutions is important, integration with existing systems is important – our solutions address all these aspects… Still, people out there are struggling in 'how do I make things live' and we have the best track record of making blockchain solutions live," N Ganapathy Subramaniam, the chief operating officer of TCS, told ET. "So, I feel there is a bigger opportunity, but we will move at the pace our customers want us to move in this area."Analysts, however, believe it is too early to project for revenue visibility from blockchain solutions. There is a rush to create IPs and productised solutions in blockchain technology because security is one of the key requirements it can solve, said Mrinal Rai, principal analyst at ISG, a global technology research and advisory firm. "I'm sure companies have some headway in the technology, however, it is early to predict if it would have impact on revenue visibility because many projects are still in development," he said.A chunk of spending by clients on emerging technology would be around cloud and AI services, said Apurva Prasad, analyst at HDFC Securities, adding blockchain would only form a small part of that. "I think blockchain will be the smaller segment… I still don't think it's large enough to really move the ticker."
