BTS lit up Stephen Colbert's stage again and it's pretty clear everyone's a fan

Posted: 18 May 2019 07:40 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

There's no such thing as too much BTS.

Mere days after taking the world by storm (again) with a Beatles-inspired performance of "Boy With Luv" on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, K-pop phenomenon BTS returned to the talk show for a second special appearance to perform "Make It Right."

And you guessed it: BTS fans (aka ARMY) couldn't get enough of the pretty boys and their beautiful voices.

Unlike their "Boy With Luv" performance, BTS skipped the dancing and instead stuck to a vocals act to let each of their voices shine.

As with seemingly everything they do, fans praised the boy band for their natural live singing abilities, especially their skillfully-timed harmonizations. Read more...

'The Big Bang Theory' has met its uneventful end. Finally.

Posted: 18 May 2019 07:00 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

I can’t believe The Big Bang Theory is over. Like, actually over. It was such a constant that a part of me assumed I'd begrudgingly watch it till I was on my deathbed.

The comedy has been a staple for 12 long years on CBS, cementing itself in television history with a massive viewership, 46 Emmy nominations (and 10 wins — four for lead actor Jim Parsons), global acclaim, and guest stars like Mark Hamill, Carrie Fischer, and Stephen Hawking.

Even when the show's quality plummeted in the second half of its life span, the audience didn't give up. It's the longest-running and one of the most-watched comedies of the last decade. The one-hour series finale was watched by 18 million viewers live. Read more...

'Game of Thrones' cast photos from 2011 to 2019 are the bleakest thing you'll see today

Posted: 18 May 2019 06:00 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

Well, this is dark.

On Sunday, the biggest franchise in the history of television comes to an end, wrapping up eight years (and seasons) of nail-biting fantasy drama.

To commemorate the monumental finale, we dug bag into the HBO archives to find photos of our favorite characters' first appearances on-screen in 2011 to compare to their more recent moments in 2019 — and the results were as bleak as you'd expect.

From amputations and zombie resurrections to some questionable haircuts, it would seem that everything in Westeros just kept getting worse over the past eight years. (Including the quality of the show.) Read more...

Save more than 35% on this electric water flosser

Posted: 18 May 2019 02:00 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

Hate flossing? You're not alone. While dentists insist upon hand flossing as the primary (and most effective) plaque removal method, you may have a legitimate reason for skirting it — like wrist or finger pain, or braces that make weaving floss in and out of your wires a hassle. (Or maybe you're just lazy?)

That's where water flossers come in. They're steadily gaining popularity: handheld devices that spray concentrated streams of water between your teeth, removing food from hard-to-brush places just like traditional flossing does.

The market's flooded with them, so where to start? The Belmint Countertop Electric Water Flosser is a great, cheap option if you're just getting starting. It’s normally $59.99, but you can grab it on sale for just $36.99 — nearly 40% off. Read more...

Grab a Google Home Hub for just $90 — that's almost $60 in savings

Posted: 17 May 2019 05:00 PM PDT

In this age of technological advancement, it seems like one of the most coveted life goals among the masses is being a proud owner of a fully connected home, chock-full of smart devices that work together like a beautiful symphony.

The less dramatic way of putting it would be to say that everyone wants a smart home

Why? Well first of all, it’s just cool, and second of all, being surrounded by smart devices makes life infinitely easier. The only downside is that once you reach a certain number, these devices can be hard to keep track of and control — and that’s why you need a central hub.

Get your buzz on with this electric toothbrush cover of 'Wannabe' by the Spice Girls

If you have a guitar, chuck it in the garbage right now. Take a sledgehammer to that old grand piano. The only instrument you'll ever need is an electric toothbrush.

Device Orchestra is a YouTube channel that's taken on the impossible (yet entertaining) task of turning everyday appliances and inanimate objects into his own personal orchestra.

Just like frogs taught to sing in Meet the Robinsons, Device Orchestra is tapping into the hidden musical potential of everything from credit card machines, to toasters, and now, electric toothbrushes.

He uses five brushes to create a flawless rendition of the "Wannabe" by the Spice Girls, including the rap parts. This sort of stripped down, whimsically hilarious energy is also reminiscent of a lot of YouTube otamatone covers.  Read more...

Slack patches Windows app bug that could've been used for spying

Posted: 17 May 2019 01:54 PM PDT

TwitterFacebook

A security researcher has uncovered a flaw in Slack that could've been exploited to steal files over the business messaging app and potentially spread malware.

The flaw involves Slack's Windows desktop app, and how it can automatically send downloaded files to a certain destination—whether it be on your PC or to an online storage server. You can set a download location in the app's preferences section. However, David Wells, a researcher at the security firm Tenable, noticed there's another way to configure the option: Via a special link.

"Crafting a link like 'slack://settings/?update={'PrefSSBFileDownloadPath':<pathHere>'}' would change the default download location if clicked," Wells wrote in a blog post on the vulnerability. Read more...

Exploring the toxic world of 'female privilege'

Posted: 17 May 2019 01:47 PM PDT

TwitterFacebook

It was early on Saturday morning when I crossed the threshold into a quarantined community. I was entering r/TheRedPill, a subreddit dedicated to radical misogyny. This breeding ground of anti-women invective and conspiracy theories is so brazenly hostile, it’s literally cordoned off like a health hazard. It was here that I hoped to trace the source of a term that is currently flooding the online forums devoted to male separatism and men’s rights activism.

That term is “female privilege”, and though it’s not one you’d likely hear in everyday conversation, it’s one that’s reverberating loudly through the corridors of the Manosphere — a constellation of anti-women, anti-feminist subcultures. Read more...

This fact is made painfully clear by the Google purchases page — a detailed list, pulled from your Gmail inbox, of everything you've purchased over the years that came with a confirmation email. The level of detail is staggering.

Those books you bought in 2013 when you were fascinated by the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis? The same pair of shoes that you ordered, over and over again, for years? (Yes, these are personal examples.) They're all there, in a neat little helpfully compiled list.

How to help protect abortion access in states where it's most threatened

Posted: 17 May 2019 12:35 PM PDT

TwitterFacebook

Several states, including Alabama, Georgia, and Missouri have recently passed laws that effectively ban abortion. They prohibit the procedure just weeks into pregnancy and, in some cases, make providing abortion care punishable by a years-long prison sentence.

While these bills have yet to go into effect, and will likely be stalled by lawsuits challenging their constitutionality, the bans have prompted outrage and panic.

As legal battles play out in courts around the country, it's important to remember that state-based grassroots groups and clinics will need even more support to serve patients who continue to seek abortion care.  Read more...

AI is now making 'Joe Rogan' talk about his chimp hockey team

Posted: 17 May 2019 12:05 PM PDT

Say hello to Joe Rogan: podcaster, entertainer of problematic views, and man who believes that feeding his all chimp hockey team a diet of bone broth and elk meat will give them the power to rip your balls off.

Or, at least that's what the unaware listener might believe after listening to an entirely AI-generated clip of the popular podcaster. Unlike Rogan's typical totally coherent rants, this one is a total fabrication.

"The replica of Rogan’s voice the team created was produced using a text-to-speech deep learning system they developed called RealTalk," explained the researchers behind the clip in a blog post, "which generates life-like speech using only text inputs." Read more...

That's the name of Spotify's first voice-controlled plug-in smart device: Car Thing. In a blog post Friday, the music streaming company said the device would play music and podcasts for a "small group" of invited Spotify Premium users in the U.S.

Spotify said it could also be joined by devices called  Voice Thing and Home Thing. A company spokesperson wouldn't elaborate beyond the blog post.

But The Verge found that the device will play through Bluetooth and plug into the car's cigarette lighter socket. You say, "Hey, Spotify" to activate the device, which is connected to your account.   Read more...

Best sex toys for women: Take pleasure into your own hands

Posted: 17 May 2019 09:53 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

If Instagram is to be believed, then self care for women basically amounts to face masks and daily affirmation apps.

Hot take: Sex toys are the ultimate self-care purchase.

Orgasms release oxytocin, the anti-stress hormone that gets you warm and fuzzy when cuddling, while dopamine, a neurotransmitter that regulates sleep, also makes an appearance. It stands to reason, then, that "I need to get laid" is a thing that actually makes sense to say when you're having a rough week.

SEE ALSO: Best vibrators (the good, the great, the orgasmic)

Sex toys allow you to give yourself that needed boost whenever you damn well please, and it's empowering to not have to rely on someone else (though toys are great for spicing things up with a partner, too). Getting to know your body is also key in developing a positive relationship with yourself — the most important relationship you'll ever have. Read more...

The 'Old Town Road' music video is here and brimming with yeehaw energy

Posted: 17 May 2019 09:37 AM PDT

At long last, the official "Old Town Road" music video has arrived, and it has everything we could have imagined: Billy Ray Cyrus, bank robbery, Diplo on the washboard, a game of Bingo, not-subtle Snapple ads, and glam cowboy outfits, to name a few.

The TikTok-beloved song is enjoying its seventh week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it's beaten out new songs from the likes of Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, and Justin Bieber. Not bad for a song that got booted from the country charts for not "embracing enough elements of today's country music," huh? Looks like Lil Nas X and his extremely powerful horse will get the last laugh. Read more...

Don't feel bad for Facebook's CTO

Posted: 17 May 2019 09:36 AM PDT

TwitterFacebook

The New York Times has published a stunningly boot-licking article about Facebook's Chief Technology Officer that aims to humanize the executive's plight through his own tears.

Jesus Christ. If this man — architect of the platform that connected 2 billion people around the world so that they could yell at, and, like, actually murder, each other — doesn't have something to cry about, then nobody does.

The profile documents the rising, then spluttering, star of Mike Schroepfer, the current CTO of Facebook. It contrasts his oh-so-humble journey as a technology whiz makin' it in the Valley with the current problems he now faces of developing artificial intelligence to stop humans from spewing their deadly bile across the world.  Read more...

water to reduce body weight

Posted: 18 May 2019 06:19 AM PDT

Posted: 18 May 2019 06:17 AM PDT

Posted: 18 May 2019 06:12 AM PDT

Posted: 18 May 2019 06:11 AM PDT

Posted: 18 May 2019 05:59 AM PDT

USA Today: GOP lawmaker on Iran threat: Directive was to 'kill and kidnap American soldiers'

WASHINGTON – A top Republican lawmaker said Friday that the threat from Iran picked up by U.S. intelligence – which sparked a U.S. military deployment to the Middle East and heightened tensions across the region – was very specific and involved the possible kidnapping and killing of American soldiers.

"To the extent I can discuss it, it was human intelligence," Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, the ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told USA TODAY on Friday. He was referring to intelligence information that prompted the Pentagon to deploy an aircraft carrier, along with B-52 bombers and other military forces, to the Middle East.

Trump administration officials said the move was made to counter what they described as credible threats from Iran to U.S. forces in the region.

Iran Threatens To Hit U.S. Navy Ships With Missiles And To Target World Energy Supplies

Iran has missile capabilities to strike Israel and they claimed today, US warships in the Persian Gulf. Over the last decade they have expanded their 'axis of resistance' in the Middle East

The Guardian: US-Iran conflict would hit energy supplies, says Iranian general

Gen Saleh Jokar also says Iran's missiles could easily reach US warships in Gulf.

Iranian missiles could easily hit US ships in the Gulf, and any conflict would threaten global energy supplies, a senior Iranian military official has said.

As tensions simmered on Friday, Tehran blamed the US for an escalating regional crisis that western intelligence officials fear could lead to open conflict.

"If a war happens, the world's energy supply will suffer," Gen Saleh Jokar, deputy commander of the Revolutionary Guards, said on Friday. He added: "Iran's short-range missiles can easily reach present [US] warships in the Persian Gulf."

From Wikipedia: The War Lover is a 1962 British black-and-white war film directed by Philip Leacock and written by Howard Koch loosely based on the 1959 novel, The War Lover by John Hersey, altering the names of characters and events but retaining its basic framework. It stars Steve McQueen, Robert Wagner, Shirley Anne Field, Ed Bishop and features a young Michael Crawford.

The war itself is not the most important element of the film. Instead it focuses on the character of Captain Buzz Rickson played by McQueen and his determination to serve himself and get what he wants – in the process antagonising everyone.

Beijing sensitivities about details of the text of its trade agreement with the US being made public were behind the collapse of negotiations, according to Susan Thornton, former US assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs. Photo: Bloomberg

Kinling Lo, SCMP: What killed US-China trade talks: A tale of two texts

* A difference of opinion over detail behind sudden shift from optimism to renewed hostilities
* Washington prefers to reveal what Beijing would conceal

The trade talks between China and the United States collapsed because Beijing removed details outlining the obligations it was required to meet as part of reaching a deal to end the trade war, according to a former senior US official.

Susan Thornton, former acting assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, said both sides had agreed on a time frame to gradually implement changes as they worked towards a final settlement. The Americans, however, wanted to set benchmarks on specific issues so they could be certain of the progress being made towards reaching the finished deal.

LONDON/OSLO (Reuters) - Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) are "highly likely" to have facilitated attacks last Sunday on four tankers including two Saudi ships off Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, according to a Norwegian insurers' report seen by Reuters.

The UAE, Saudi Arabia and Norway are investigating the attacks, which also hit a UAE- and a Norwegian-flagged vessel.

A confidential assessment issued this week by the Norwegian Shipowners' Mutual War Risks Insurance Association (DNK) concluded that the attack was likely to have been carried out by a surface vessel operating close by that despatched underwater drones carrying 30-50 kg (65-110 lb) of high-grade explosives to detonate on impact.

Top Taliban Negotiator Says The U.S. Is On The 'Verge Of Defeat'

VOA: Afghan Taliban Chief Negotiator: 'US on Verge of Defeat'

ISLAMABAD — The Taliban's chief negotiator says in newly released remarks that the United States is on the verge of defeat and will quit Afghanistan soon "either of their own accord, or they will be forced out."

Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai made the assertions in an April 28 speech to an "internal gathering" in Doha, Qatar, just two days before he led his team of insurgent negotiators into fresh talks with U.S. interlocutors. Pro-Taliban social media outlets Friday released video of Stanekzai's speech, one day after the U.S. special reconciliation envoy, Zalmay Khalilzad, and his team wrapped up the week-long negotiations with Taliban representatives in the Qatari capital.

In the speech, Stanekzai praised what he called the bravery of the Afghan nation for defeating past British and Soviet invasions of their country and resisting the current foreign military presence, referring to the U.S.-led coalition, which is training and advising pro-government forces in battles against the Taliban.

* Officials from the NATO-led mission Resolute Support say Afghan officials called in an airstrike, telling US forces that the area was clear of friendlies, but it was not clear, and the US strike killed as many as 17 local policemen, Stars and Stripes reported.

A US airstrike conducted Thursday in Afghanistan killed more than a dozen local policemen and wounded just as many.

When a firefight broke out between the Taliban and the local police force after the latter attempted to take down a Taliban flag in southern Helmand province, Afghan forces on the ground called in an airstrike, telling the US that the area was clear of friendlies, Stars and Stripes reported, citing Resolute Support.

"Unfortunately, they were not, and a tragic accident resulted," the NATO mission in Afghanistan explained in its statement. "We're examining the miscommunication to ensure it is not repeated. We regret this tragic loss of life of our partners and are committed to improvement every day with every mission."

Varner said the F-16 had a hydraulic failure which led to the crash. Authorities were investigating whether anyone on the ground was hurt.

The base's fire department responded to the crash along with the Riverside police and Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

SCMP: Former Donald Trump official hopes for US-China trade deal, but says Beijing can afford to wait

A former official in the Trump administration has said that China can weather the storm brought by the trade war with the United States but might have to "keep steady, keep their heads down and wait" for change in the White House.

Susan Thornton, former acting assistant secretary of state to US President Donald Trump, told a gathering in Shanghai on Wednesday that she hoped a trade deal between the US and China could be concluded by next month.

But the reality was that it would "take a while" for China and the US to talk about cooperation again, Thornton, who in 20 years rose to become the US State Department's chief negotiator for East Asia and Pacific affairs, told the South China Morning Post.

"I want to be optimistic," said Thornton, whose 27-year career in Washington ended in July. "I tell all our foreign counterparts they should keep steady, keep their heads down and wait. [They should] try to not let anything change dramatically."

America's Real Defense And National Security Budget Is $1.2542 Trillion

William D. Hartung and Mandy Smithberger, Business Insider/Tom Dispatch: The real US defense budget is even bigger than you think — here's a dollar-by-dollar tour of the national security state

* The Trump administration's most recent budget includes $750 billion for the Pentagon.
* That near-record sum is only part of the US national-security spending, the total of which is much higher, according to William D. Hartung and Mandy Smithberger.

In its latest budget request, the Trump administration is asking for a near-record $750 billion for the Pentagon and related defense activities, an astonishing figure by any measure.

If passed by Congress, it will, in fact, be one of the largest military budgets in American history, topping peak levels reached during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. And keep one thing in mind: that $750 billion represents only part of the actual annual cost of our national security state.

There are at least 10 separate pots of money dedicated to fighting wars, preparing for yet more wars, and dealing with the consequences of wars already fought. So the next time a president, a general, a secretary of defense, or a hawkish member of Congress insists that the US military is woefully underfunded, think twice. A careful look at US defense expenditures offers a healthy corrective to such wildly inaccurate claims.

The Current Trade War Is Being Viewed By The Chinese Government As A Threat To It's Survival

Posted: 17 May 2019 08:07 AM PDT

China's President Xi Jinping arrives for the third plenary session of the National People's Congress (NPC) at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, March 12, 2017. REUTERS/Tyrone Siu

James Rickards, Daily Reckoning: "Mandate of Heaven" in Jeopardy

U.S. policy through the Bush and Obama administrations was to soft-pedal questionable Chinese trade practices, pirating technology and theft of intellectual property in return for cheap manufactured goods and China's willingness to finance trillions of dollars of U.S. government debt.

Now Trump has changed the rules of the game. He's said lost jobs in the U.S. are not worth the cheap goods and cheap financing. He bet that China had no alternative but to keep producing those goods and keep buying our debt, even if the U.S. imposes tariffs to help create manufacturing jobs here.

President Trump and President Xi had been on a collision course involving issues of trade, tariffs, and currency manipulation, which are coming to a head.

It's important to understand that China's economy is not just about providing jobs, goods and services. It is about regime survival for a Chinese Communist Party that faces an existential crisis if it fails to deliver. It is an illegitimate regime that will remain in power only so long as it provides jobs and a rising living standard for the Chinese people. The overriding imperative of the Chinese leadership is to avoid societal unrest.

WNU Editor: The Chinese have always viewed having $500 billion trade deficits with the U.S. and restrictions on U.S. exports as a given, and have formulated and implemented their economic policies to insure the additional employment of 20,000,000 new workers each year based on this expectation. The trade war has put all of this into jeopardy, and in turn has resulted in concerns that the promise that Beijing has made to its citizens will not be reached. In response the Chinese are now playing the waiting game, in the hope that President Trump will be defeated in 2020, and a new U.S. President will return to the status quo. I do not think this is going to happen, but this is the policy that Beijing has decided to follow. As to concerns that if there is an economic slowdown it will translate into a threat to the Chinese government. I think this fear is overblown. But the problem is that President Xi and his entourage believe that it will, and they are in the drivers seat right.

The Coming Generation War In The U.S.

Niall Ferguson & Eyck Freymann, The Atlantic: The Coming Generation War

The Democrats are rapidly becoming the party of the young—and the consequences could be profound.

"There is a mysterious cycle in human events," said Franklin Delano Roosevelt, accepting the Democratic nomination for president in Philadelphia in 1936. "To some generations much is given. Of others much is expected. This generation of Americans has a rendezvous with destiny."

In the 20th century, many sociologists and historians flirted with the idea that generational changes could explain U.S. politics. The historians Arthur Schlesinger Sr. and Jr. wrote about "cycles of American history," arguing that, as the generations turn, American politics rotates inexorably between liberal and conservative consensus. More recently, a new generational scheme has come into vogue. William Strauss and Neil Howe's theory of the "fourth turning" predicts a crisis and a major political realignment every 80 to 90 years. (Strauss and Howe were briefly in the spotlight in 2016 after Steve Bannon praised their work.)

WNU Editor: There is a lot of truth to this analysis, and one that I have made in private presentations when asked what do I see is the future of the U.S. when it comes to politics/economics/culture/and international relations. Case in point. I regard Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez not only as a radical, but someone who is totally ignorant and naive on issues of economics and international politics .... even though her university background is in economics and via through her parents she has been educated on international relations. But for her own generation, her views and thinking are shared by much of her generation (the Millennials and Generation Z, i.e. Americans aged 18 to 38), and she and people like her are now the driving force in Democrat politics and will be for decades. This is a generational conflict, and the consequences of this radical shift to the left on economic and societal/cultural issues are going to be profound. It will impact American domestic policies and programs, the military, and doubly so on U.S. foreign policies and relations. But this is nothing new. The young always end up throwing out the old, and yes, the America that I have gotten to know in the past 30 years will not be the America 30 years from now. My big worry about this trend is how the Millennial and Generation Z are responding to those who do no share their opinion. More to the point .... they do not take criticisms and alternative point of views lightly, and in some cases push to censor contrarian points of view. I am seeing this happening on social media platforms, university forums, and in the media, and to say that this is not a healthy sign is an understatement. When you believe that you know everything, that tells me that you are not interested in learning. Moscow Times: Who Is Mr. Ivanov: Why Russia's Middle Class Is Shrinking

The struggling middle class has become critically dependent on the government.

In the five years since 2014, the share of those in Russia who consider themselves middle class has shrunk from 60 percent to 47 percent. This is according to a study commissioned by the investment arm of Sberbank, Russia's largest bank, on the "Ivanov index," a measure of consumer confidence. "Ivanov," a common Russian last name, is used to represent a typical middle-class person in Russia.

People who have savings, travel abroad, and frequent restaurants usually think of themselves as middle class, Yaroslav Lissovolik, head of the analytics department at Sberbank CIB, told the newspaper Vedomosti. Those who can only afford basic and immediate necessities place themselves below the imaginary boundary between economic classes; their share grew from 35 percent five years ago to 48 percent today. The fastest the self-identified middle class shrank was between 2015 and 2017, Lissovolik said.

WNU Editor: This is a tough one for me. In Russia I consider myself upper-class, even during Soviet times. But if I was to take what my personal economic status in the 1980s and transport it to the present, I would be viewed as destitute. That is how much Russia has changed in 30 years, and why it is difficult to use metrics such as consumer confidence and personal opinion. From my vantage point the Russian middle class is growing and enjoying a life that has never been experienced in Russia throughout its history. But for those who are in the 20 - 40 age bracket, they see themselves as a class that is declining, and not meeting their expectations. They are frustrated, and they want more. This is what the next leader of Russia is going to face, and it is going to be hard to meet their expectations.

I see this same trend line in China. When I was working in China in the 1980s the political and economic leadership lived in simple homes, were driven around in Toyota vans, and their offices were as austere as you can imagine. And as for the average Chinese citizen, simplicity and sparse are the words that come to mind. Today .... Oh my God .... the leadership live in a manner that past Chinese emperors would be jealous of, and for the 400,000,000 who make up the Middle Class in China (and growing), they are living in a manner that the leadership could only dream about 30 years ago. But the Chinese Middle Class are not happy, which I will explain in a later post.

U.S. Lifts Steel and Aluminum Tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Posted: 17 May 2019 11:19 AM PDT

(WASHINGTON) — Bogged down in a sprawling trade dispute with U.S. rival China, President Donald Trump took steps Friday to ease tensions with America’s allies — lifting import taxes on Canadian and Mexican steel and aluminum and delaying auto tariffs that would have hurt Japan and Europe.

By removing the metals tariffs on Canada and Mexico, Trump cleared a key roadblock to a North American trade pact his team negotiated last year. As part of Friday’s arrangement, the Canadians and Mexicans agreed to scrap retaliatory tariffs they had imposed on U.S. goods.

“I’m pleased to announce that we’ve just reached an agreement with Canada and Mexico, and we’ll be selling our product into those countries without the imposition of tariffs, or major tariffs,” Trump said in a speech to the National Association of Realtors.

In a joint statement, the U.S. and Canada said they would work to prevent cheap imports of steel and aluminum from entering North America. The provision appeared to target China, which has long been accused of flooding world markets with subsidized metal, driving down world prices and hurting U.S. producers. The countries could also reimpose the tariffs if they faced a “surge” in steel or aluminum imports.

Earlier Friday, the White House said Trump is delaying for six months any decision to slap tariffs on foreign cars, a move that would have hit Japan and the Europe especially hard.

Trump still is hoping to use the threat of auto tariffs to pressure Japan and the European Union into making concessions in ongoing trade talks. “If agreements are not reached within 180 days, the president will determine whether and what further action needs to be taken,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

In imposing the metals tariffs and threatening the ones on autos, the president was relying on a rarely used weapon in the U.S. trade war arsenal — Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 — which lets the president impose tariffs on imports if the Commerce Department deems them a threat to national security.

But the steel and aluminum tariffs were also designed to coerce Canada and Mexico into agreeing to a rewrite of North American free trade pact. In fact, the Canadians and Mexicans did go along last year with a revamped regional trade deal that was to Trump’s liking. But the administration had refused to lift the taxes on their metals to the United States until Friday.

The new trade deal — the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement — needs approval the legislatures in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Several key U.S. lawmakers were threatening to reject the pact unless the tariffs were removed. And Canada had suggested it wouldn’t ratify any deal with tariffs still in place.

Thomas Donohue, president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said the lifting of the tariffs “will bring immediate relief to American farmers and manufacturers. Critically, this action delivers a welcome burst of momentum for the USMCA in Congress.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau credited his government for holding out to get the tariffs removed.

“We stayed strong,” he said. “That’s what workers asked for. These tariffs didn’t make sense around national security. They were hurting Canadian consumers, Canadian workers and American consumers and American workers.”

Trump had faced a Saturday deadline to decide what to do about the auto tariffs.

Taxing auto tariffs would mark a major escalation in Trump’s aggressive trade policies and likely would meet resistance in Congress. The United States last year imported $192 billion worth of passenger vehicles and $159 billion in auto parts.

“I have serious questions about the legitimacy of using national security as a basis to impose tariffs on cars and car parts,” Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley, chair of the Senate Finance Committee, said in a statement Friday. He’s working on legislation to scale back the president’s authority to impose national security tariffs under Section 232.

In a statement, the White House said that Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has determined that imported vehicles and parts are a threat to national security. Trump deferred action on tariffs for 180 days to give negotiators time to work out deals but threatened them if talks break down.

In justifying tariffs for national security reasons, Commerce found that the U.S. industrial base depends on technology developed by American-owned auto companies to maintain U.S. military superiority. Because of rising imports of autos and parts over the past 30 years, the market share of U.S.-owned automakers has fallen. That has caused a lag in research and development spending which is “weakening innovation and, accordingly, threatening to impair our national security,” the statement said.

The market share of vehicles produced and sold in the U.S. by American-owned automakers, the statement said, has declined from 67 percent in 1985 to 22 percent in 2017.

But the statistics don’t match market share figures from the industry. A message was left Friday seeking an explanation of how Commerce calculated the 22 percent figure.

In 2017, General Motors, Ford, Fiat Chrysler and Tesla combined had a 44.5 percent share of U.S. auto sales, according to Autodata Corp. Those figures include vehicles produced in other countries.

It’s possible that the Commerce Department didn’t include Fiat Chrysler, which is now legally headquartered in The Netherlands but has a huge research and development operation near Detroit. It had 12 percent of U.S. auto sales in 2017.

The Commerce figures also do not account for research by foreign automakers. Toyota, Hyundai-Kia, Subaru, Honda and others have significant research centers in the U.S.

Meanwhile, Trump is locked in a high stakes rumble with China. The U.S. accuses Beijing of stealing trade secrets and forcing American companies to hand over technology in a head-long push to challenge American technological dominance. The two countries have slapped tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars in each other’s products. Talks broke off last week with no resolution.

The hostilities between the world’s two biggest economies have weighed heavily the past couple of weeks on the U.S. stock market, threatening a long rally that Trump touted as a vindication of his economic policies. Opening a new front in the trade wars against EU and Japan likely would have worried investors even more.

Why Venezuela’s Government and Opposition Are Finally Coming to the Negotiating Table

Posted: 17 May 2019 11:03 AM PDT

Four months into the chaotic political stand-off between Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s regime and opposition leader Juan Guaidó’s attempted revolution, officials confirmed Thursday that representatives for both sides had travelled to Norway for talks aimed at resolving the country’s crisis.

The Oslo talks, acknowledged by Maduro’s ambassador to the U.N., are the first real sign that his government is willing to engage in dialogue with Guaidó, the president of the opposition-held parliament, and his supporters. Guaidó told reporters the talks did not yet amount to “negotiations” but a form of “mediation.”

But the news of possible progress came in the same week as a dramatic government crackdown on the opposition. Security forces blocked lawmakers from entering parliament on Tuesday, and intelligence agencies have placed fourteen opposition lawmakers––including the vice president of parliament–– under investigation for their role in a failed April 30 uprising against the government, which was dubbed a coup by Maduro.

Meanwhile Guaidó said he had instructed his U.S. envoy to open relations with the U.S. military and set a meeting with the U.S. Southern Command, which oversees military operations in Latin America, for next week, raising fresh fears of American military involvement in the country.

Tensions are rising even as a peaceful way out seems visible for the first time. Here’s what to know about the chaotic interaction between the two sides in Venezuela.

Why is Venezuela in crisis and why are the government and the opposition in a stand off?

Maduro’s government has grown increasingly authoritarian since he took over from his mentor, popular socialist leader Hugo Chávez, in 2014. A drop in global oil prices that year triggered the collapse of Venezuela’s economy, sparking years of severe humanitarian crisis and widespread social unrest. Maduro responded by detaining protesters and political opponents and stripping the opposition-controlled parliament of its powers.

Guaidó and Maduro have been at loggerheads since January, when Guaidó claimed that Maduro’s second presidential term, won in 2018 elections the opposition considered rigged, was invalid and constituted a vacuum of power. As parliament leader, the opposition claims the constitution mandates Guaidó temporarily take over the presidency to organize fresh elections.

The U.S. and 50 other mostly western countries have recognized Guaidó as president, while Maduro retains the backing of Russia, China and Turkey. Maduro also has the crucial support of the military, Venezuela’s largest institution, which exercises security functions and controls many state bodies.

The Norway talks are not the first time the two sides have been in contact, says Diego Moya-Ocampos, a Latin America expert at risk analysts IHS Markit. “There’s always been back channels to try and find an electoral solution,” he says. “The problem is there’s a small group of top government and military officials who are trying to block those solutions because they fear that if there is regime change, they will be held accountable for human rights abuses and crimes they’ve committed as part of the regime.” Analysts and international prosecutors say that many of the upper ranks of the government and military are involved in illicit money-making activities, including corruption, drug trafficking and the theft of Venezuela’s natural resources.

Why is the government cracking down on the opposition?

The crackdown began a few days after Guaidó and his supporters took to the streets on April 30. Guaidó said he had closed-door meetings with parts of the military, and called on all troops to rise up against Maduro, in what he called “the final stage of Operation Freedom.” Guaidó has long recognized he needs the military to switch sides if he is to take power. But only a relatively small number of the lower ranks and a few high-ranking members answered his call. The most high profile defector was Manuel Christopher Figuera, the former head of the much-feared national intelligence service, SEBIN.

In the wake of the failed uprising, the pro-Maduro supreme court accused legislators of treason and stripped them of their parliamentary immunity from prosecution. Some took refuge in embassies of countries including Argentina, Italy and Spain. SEBIN agents arrested parliament vice president Edgar Zambrano, towing his car to a Caracas detention center after he refused to get out.

The opposition’s gamble left it temporarily weakened, giving hardliners within the regime––those who are most opposed to closed-door talks with the opposition––the chance to assert themselves, according to Geoff Ramsey, assistant director of the Venezuela program at the Washington Office on Latin America. “This is a display of dominance and control,” he says.

Why are these talks happening now?

The failure of the April 30 uprising revealed that neither side is strong enough to break the paralysis in Venezuela by force. That likely motivated the opposition to accept talks with officials representing Maduro––after months of refusing to pursue them on the grounds that the embattled president would use them to play for time.

April 30 also fractured the government’s unity. The opposition’s claims to have met with the military top brass and the former SEBIN chief’s defection “made the perception that Maduro has control of the security apparatus less credible,” Moya-Ocampos says. He’s lost trust in the loyalty of some top military commanders.”

And while some hardliners are lashing out, Ramsey says there’s a growing realization within Maduro’s regime that the situation is unsustainable. “[The uprising’s failure] was a Pyrrhic victory. Maduro is able to resist, he’s not able to govern,” he says. “Ultimately, it’s not in Maduro’s, or anybody in Chavismo’s interest, to resist indefinitely and end up governing over a pile of ashes.”

Adding to the time-crunch for both sides is the impending impact of U.S. sanctions on Venezuela’s oil industry––which provides some 97% of the government’s foreign cash––which is increasingly important as the inflation rate of the Venezuelan bolivar hits 10 million per cent. The U.S. Treasury announced a raft of severe sanctions on Jan. 28. But several American companies that work with PdVSA were allowed to continue to operate inside Venezuela for six months. When that time runs out, on July 27, oil production could drop steeply, cutting off the government’s supply of foreign currency and making life far more difficult for both ordinary Venezuelans and the government elite.

Who is talking in Oslo and what does each side want?

Guaidó said he had sent “some envoys” to Norway, while Maduro did not explicitly acknowledge the talks but said Information Minister Jorge Rodríguez was on a “very important” mission outside Venezuela.

Venezuelan officials told the AP that the opposing sides had received separate invitations from a group of Norweigans for exploratory talks. Norway is not in the E.U. and was one of few European countries that did not recognize Guaidó as acting president in January. The Norweigan foreign ministry told AFP it could neither confirm nor deny the country’s role in the talks.

The regime and opposition remain at odds on fundamental issues.

Guaidó has made Maduro’s resignation a red line and reiterated the opposition’s demands for regime change at an event in Caracas Thursday. “I’ve said it again and again,” he said . “We won’t accept any false negotiations that don’t lead to three things: the end of the usurpation, a transition government and free elections.”

The opposition’s priority will be to move toward the establishment of a new electoral authority and a timeline for elections, Moya-Ocampos says.

But the government side has insisted that no new elections will be called before Maduro’s mandate ends in 2025.

Still, the mediation, which is supported by the U.N., could represent the beginnings of a “robust, internationally facilitated negotiator transition,” Ramsey says, and a move away from threats of military intervention from the U.S.

“The international community have been acting under the theory that, if we put enough pressure on Maduro’s regime it will collapse,” he says. “Now we’re seeing an increasing acceptance of the fact that the same is true for politics as it is in hydraulics: pressure needs to be accompanied with some kind of relief for it to be useful.”

Exclusive: U.S. Military Officials Say There Is No Actual Plan to Confront Iran

Posted: 17 May 2019 08:53 AM PDT

The Trump Administration is turning up the heat on Iran, broadcasting a new plan to send as many as 120,000 U.S. forces to the Middle East to counter purported “identified, credible threats” from Iran.

But in the world of the Pentagon, there are plans you present to politicians, and then there are real plans. And three U.S. military officials involved in planning and overseeing military forces in the region tell TIME that no actual, executable plan, or anything like it, exists for a large-scale troop deployment to the Gulf.

“That requires knowing what contingency you’re addressing,” says one officer. “Is the target Iran’s own forces or is it a militia? Is the enemy in Iraq or Syria or someplace else? A car bomb or missiles or cyber? Is there credible evidence linking an attack to the Iranian government so that targets inside Iran are legitimate?” All three sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they had not been authorized to discuss the matter publicly, told TIME they had seen no such detailed data.

National Security Advisor John Bolton recently requested a plan for sending a substantial number of additional U.S. ground and air forces to the Persian Gulf, according to the three officials. On May 9, Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan presented him and other top national security officials with a preliminary outline of plans to deploy as many as 120,000 more Americans to the region, according to the officials, who were briefed on the meeting, which was first reported by the New York Times.

But deployments of even limited forces to deal with credible threats require what’s called a time-phased force and deployment list, or TPFDL. That list details what units are in position, what additional ones would be deployed or held in reserve, what equipment and supplies would be necessary, where the forces would embark and land, how they would move, and in what sequence.

The data making up a TPFDL for a major deployment can take months to refine, and the smallest details matter. When the U.S. was preparing to invade Iraq in 2003, for example, then-defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld altered the data with the result that computers needed to keep track of arriving weaponry and supplies landed after the equipment they were supposed to track.

Once the data are refined, generating the TPFDL can take days. The list is then used to coordinate the air and sea lift capabilities necessary to deploy large numbers of troops and the material needed to support them. “Available sealift determines how much can deploy on a single passage, which affects speed of deployment,” says Gen. Eric Shinseki (ret.), who was Army Chief of Staff during the 2003 Iraq invasion. Each trip takes 22 to 23 days from the U.S. to the Gulf and the same amount of time back, Shinseki says, requiring potentially months to build up a large force in the region, once a plan is in place.

The Pentagon does maintain and update general plans for deploying troops anywhere around the globe — “probably including Canada,” says one of the officials. But existing plans prepared for possible confrontation with Iran by the U.S. Central Command, which runs combat missions in the region, do not call for the use of a major ground force to invade the country, said the three military officials, all of whom were briefed on them.

Instead, they said, any attack on Iran likely would involve a mix of air strikes using precision-guided munitions and cyberattacks to cripple the country’s electric grid, oil pipelines, communications, and financial system.

The likely first responder, said one of the officials, would not be the Army, Navy, Air Force or Marine Corps, but the U.S. Cyber Command, which conducts offensive operations using tools like the Stuxnet worm that attacked Iran’s uranium enrichment facilities in 2010.

Another indicator of how far from an actual deployment of forces the U.S. remains is how little work has been done to figure out where American soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines would be based. There has been no substantial outreach to nations such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait about hosting 120,000 more U.S. forces, hundreds more aircraft, and potentially hundreds of tons of equipment, or about helping defray the costs involved, said two U.S. diplomats, who also requested anonymity to avoid White House ire.

Nor has there been an effort to assemble a new military coalition similar to the one the U.S. mustered to repel Iraqi forces from Kuwait in 1991, the two said. It’s not at all clear who might be willing to join such a coalition. “The Saudis and the UAE (United Arab Emirates) probably would throw in,” says one of the sources, but “you can forget the Europeans this time.”

Part of the reason for that is the paucity of evidence regarding the purported threat itself. Four American and allied intelligence officials say they have seen no dramatic increase in the threat posed by Iran or its allies or anything suggesting that the Islamic Republic is preparing to resume its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Reports in recent days suggest Iran has loaded missiles onto boats in the Gulf. However, the intelligence analysts say such moves have been taken without efforts to conceal them from satellite and other surveillance, suggesting no effort on Iran’s part to launch a surprise attack.

If anything, the available information indicates that Iran’s government wants to avoid provoking an American attack or incurring additional international sanctions on its oil exports, according to one of the intelligence officials, who like the others requested anonymity to discuss matters about which they aren’t authorized to speak publicly.

That some U.S. allies find the evidence weak, at best, is evident. Spain this week withdrew a frigate that was part of a U.S.-led strike force in the Persian Gulf, and Federica Mogherini, the European Union foreign affairs chief, called for “maximum restraint” after she met in Brussels Monday with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who was unsuccessful in winning support for the Administration’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran.

A senior British military official told reporters at the Pentagon on Tuesday that he had seen no increase in the danger from Iran or Shiite militias in Iraq or Syria. “We are aware of their presence clearly and we monitor them along with a whole range of others because of the environment we are in,” said Maj. Gen. Chris Ghika, the deputy commander of the U.S.-led coalition fighting the remnants of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

A few hours later, the United States Central Command fired back, saying Ghika’s comments are “counter to the identified credible threats available to intelligence from U.S. and allies regarding Iranian-backed forces in the region.”

Some allies and members of both parties in Congress worry that some Administration officials want conflict regardless of whether there is a plan to deploy troops or not.

All three U.S. military officials said they were mystified by the 120,000 number that has appeared in numerous news accounts. “It makes no sense,” said one of the officials. “It’s a fraction of what would be needed to invade Iran and far more than what would be required to take down a militia dumb enough to launch a major, traceable attack.”

The U.S. invaded Iraq, which is one quarter the size of Iran and has half the number of people, in 2003 with 145,000 troops. That force was too small to secure the country after its army and police forces were disbanded; at the time, Shinseki estimated that several hundred thousand troops would be needed to take Iraq, a recommendation the Bush Administration ignored.

Intentionally or not, President Trump added to the uncertainty on Tuesday, saying of the reports of new military planning: “I think it’s fake news. OK? Now would I do that? Absolutely. But we have not planned for that. Hopefully, we’re not gonna have to plan for that, and if we did that, we’d send a hell of a lot more troops than that.”

That apparently self-contradictory statement raised hopes of a split between the president and his hawkish National Security Advisor, John Bolton. In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Trump denied that there is any infighting over Middle East policy in his administration.

The politics favor the doves. While Iran’s support for militias and terrorist groups in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, the Gaza Strip and elsewhere is well-known, the Trump Administration is likely to have a difficult time mustering public and political support for new military action in the Mideast without producing concrete and convincing evidence of a major new Iranian threat.

“Bolton did the same with President George W. Bush and Iraq,” Rep. Seth Moulton, a Massachusetts Democrat who served in Iraq, said in a statement last week. “As someone sent four times to that misguided war, I have seen the costs of Bolton’s disastrous foreign policy in a way he never will — firsthand, and at the loss of thousands of American lives.”

But even if neither country wants a war, there is the danger of a miscalculation, Shinseki says. “Things could heat up quickly, even if it were intended merely as signaling and not as a direct threat,” he says, and “once that threshold is crossed, there’s no turning back.”

Would You Like a Passport With That? McDonald’s Partners With U.S. Embassy in Austria to Help Stranded Tourists

Posted: 17 May 2019 06:05 AM PDT

In a move that has raised many eyebrows on social media, McDonald’s and the U.S. Embassy in Vienna, Austria, have partnered to help Americans stranded abroad.

Tourists can now go to any of the 194 McDonald’s in Austria and be given a round-the-clock number to contact the U.S. Embassy, as well as a phone to make the call, if necessary.

The partnership, announced on May 10, became active on Wednesday. But it received a mixed reaction online, where users were quick to pan the U.S. for partnership with the fast food brand, which has been associated with rising obesity levels.

“Can I have a McPassport please,” wrote one Facebook user.

“Introducing the McVisa!” wrote another – in a comment that received 50 likes and “haha” reactions on Facebook. Some others were more supportive: “Thank you, I wish more countries/businesses would be willing to help others in this way!” one person wrote.

Others raised questions of confidentiality of private information. When one user asked whether the agreement might be a precursor to the actual U.S. embassy in Vienna shutting down, the official account replied: “Certainly not. Our Embassy is fully staffed and ready to assist American citizens in need. This partnership is only one extra way for Americans to connect to the Embassy when they are in an emergency situation.”

A State Department official told TIME: “The U.S. Department of State has no greater responsibility than the safety and welfare of U.S. citizens overseas … As part of our commitment to assisting U.S. citizens in need overseas, from time to time we work with private-sector and other non-government entities. Through this program, U.S. citizens in distress can enter any McDonald’s in Austria and be provided with a way to contact the U.S. Embassy by phone.”

A McDonald’s representative said the company was not being paid to offer the service, the New York Times reported.

The U.S.-China Trade War Reveals America’s New World Status

Posted: 17 May 2019 05:00 AM PDT

“I say openly to President Xi and all of my many friends in China that China will be hurt very badly if you don’t make a deal.” Thus spake President Donald Trump this week in the new medium of modern diplomacy – Twitter.

The trade war between the U.S. and China has entered a new phase, with tariffs raised from 10% to 25% on $200 billion of goods. The markets had not expected this news, with the tea leaves since the end of last year being widely seen to indicate that the US President was well on his way to winning a game of brinkmanship that would improve the terms on which the US trades with China.

As is often the case with the Trump administration, there is method behind the madness. It is certainly right that U.S. businesses face barriers not only to entry but to investment, development and competition in China that Chinese businesses do not face in the U.S. Likewise, issues around the protection of intellectual property are imbalanced and in need of revision. And while many have pointed out that a trade deficit is not inherently bad in its own right, few would argue that trying to get Beijing to buy more from the US is a bad move.

Even the idea of pulling the rug from under the Chinese delegation’s feet at the last minute, which included public accusations that the latter had been negotiating in bad faith and had attempted to go back on previous commitments is a tactic that many negotiators can recognize of using a position of strength to force the counter-party on to the back foot.

“China is not afraid,” said Vice Premier Liu He, who is leading the Chinese side of the negotiations, “nor are the Chinese people,” in comments that were supplemented in Xinhua, the Chinese news agency, with the words, “as long as we keep our own house in order, the sky will not fall.”

While it is tempting to think this is all about Trump, it is part of a much bigger and wider story. The last three decades have been a period of astonishing global transformation. New technologies have changed the way we communicate, learn and share. But it has also been a period of profound global economic re-distribution. The rate and pace of change has been jaw-dropping. In China alone, some 800 million people have been lifted from below the poverty line, according to the World Bank. At the same time, construction projects in the country were so extensive and numerous that some estimates conclude more concrete was used in China between 2011-13 alone than in the United States during the course of the entire 20th century.

The story is not just about China. Seventeen of the twenty fastest growing cities in the world at the moment are located in India, including all of the top ten. By 2027, the aggregate GDP of cities will equal those of North America, with expectations that they will be 17% higher eight years later. A new world is being born – and has been for years.

This new world is one of rising ambitions. When expensive art work is sold at auction, or leading soccer teams are bought, their new owners are often from places like India, Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Russia – or China.

The new world is above all that is characterized by rising connections as states seek to build and consolidate economic ties, stimulate trade and find political accommodation. Helping this happen, at least in theory, are schemes like the Belt and Road Initiative, China’s signature economic and foreign policy that was first announced by President Xi in 2013. This scheme, more a loose collection of projects than a directed formal plan, has attracted considerable attention in recent months. It was heavily criticised by US officials such former US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis who remarked in 2018 that ‘in a globalised world, there are many belts and roads, and no one nation should put itself in a position of dictating ‘one belt, one road.’

China’s investments in road, rail lines, ports and energy plants are the most visible of a wide range of other regional programs that are designed to remove barriers and improve economic, political and military co-operation, conceived and promoted by Russia, India, Kazakhstan, Vietnam and many more besides.

New alliances are taking shape in a world that does not look like the West and is no rush of replicating the democratic models of Europe and the Americas. Across Asia, freedoms are not just not rising, they are falling, with those who fall foul of the different governments, from political opponents to journalists and charity workers being silenced by state control of the media, intimidation or worse.

New technologies play an important role in the way that authoritarian states are able to maintain control – ironically, often based on pioneering hardware and software created in the U.S. and the west. But another reason for the solidarities of so many nations lying along the ancient Silk Roads is that the model of liberal democracy is not so obviously attractive as perhaps it was following the fall of the Berlin Wall nearly thirty years ago. Rioters on the streets of Paris and mass marches seeking independence for Catalonia, the dislocation and division of both the UK and Trump’s America hardly provide exemplars of cohesion, hope and optimism for these nations to aspire to.

The robust economic growth in Asia is powered by rising demographics, rising connectivity and abundant natural resources – the Middle East, Russia and Central Asia account for almost three quarters of proven oil reserves, while the countries of South East and. East Asia account for 85% of global rice production. That contrasts sharply too with economic stagnation in Europe in particular, where life is becoming harder.

Little wonder, then, that discussion in Britain, in Europe and in the US has turned to protectionism, to try to find a way to respond to the changing world, and to adapt to it. Nor is it surprising that many take solace in the past and seek to return to happier times. In that sense, the fact that Trump’s mantra is not “Make America Great” but “Make America Great Again” provides a perfect slogan for the 21st century: as one part of the world rises to face the future, another wants to turn the clock back to the past.

U.K. Labour Party Leader Ends Brexit Talks With Government Without a Compromise

Posted: 17 May 2019 03:33 AM PDT

(LONDON) — Talks between Britain’s government and opposition aimed at striking a compromise Brexit deal broke down without agreement Friday, plunging the country back into a morass of uncertainty over its departure from the European Union.

Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said the talks with Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservative government have “gone as far as they can.”

In a letter to May released by Labour, Corbyn said “we have been unable to bridge important policy gaps between us.”

And with May set to announce within weeks that she plans to step down, Corbyn said the “increasing weakness and instability” of the government made striking a lasting agreement impossible.

The two sides have held weeks of negotiations to try to agree on terms for Brexit that can win support in Parliament. The talks began after lawmakers rejected May’s divorce deal with the EU three times.

But the Conservatives and left-of-center Labour differ on how close an economic relationship to seek with the bloc after the U.K. leaves. Labour wants to stick close to EU rules in order to guarantee seamless trade, while the government wants a looser relationship that would leave Britain freer to strike new trade deals around the world.

Britain was due to leave the EU on March 29, but the bloc has extended the Brexit deadline until Oct. 31 amid the political impasse in the U.K.

That deadlock has deepened this week with the breakdown of the cross-party talks and intensifying pressure on May from within the Conservative Party to quit.

Pro-Brexit Conservatives are furious that Britain hasn’t yet left the EU, almost three years after voters backed Brexit in a referendum. Many blame May and want her replaced with a more staunchly pro-Brexit leader such as former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.

On Thursday, May agreed to set out a timetable for her departure early next month, raising the prospect that Britain will get a new prime minister before it leaves the EU.

Her resignation, when it comes, will trigger a party leadership contest in which any Conservative lawmaker can run. The winner will become party leader and prime minister without the need for a general election.

May plans to make a fourth attempt to get lawmakers’ backing for Brexit terms by putting a withdrawal agreement bill to a vote during the week of June 3.

She says that if it passes, Britain could leave the EU in July, well before the October deadline set by the bloc.

But it’s unclear how the government plans to persuade a majority of lawmakers to back May’s EU divorce terms, since few legislators on either side of the Brexit divide seem prepared to change their positions.

An interestingly exaggerated, whimsical, Pokemon infested world comes alive with 'Pokemon Detective Pikachu' set in Ryme City, a neon-glitzy world in which humans and Pokemon co-exist in relative harmony. Director and co-writer Rob Letterman's cinematic sensibilities combine well with Ryan Reynolds' deadpan sarcasm –paving the way for a fitfully engaging experience. The narrative may not have the consistent playful energy of a 'Shazam,' but Pikachu's cuteness overload more than makes up for the inconsistency in humour and tempo. There's enough visual Pokemon referencing here combined with bits and pieces of origin history to please the fans as well as those new to the world of Japanese video game, anime-manga franchise.

The narrative borrows its plot points from the 2016 Nintendo game - centering around Tim Goodman (Justice Smith), nerdy 21-year-old son of a private investigator who is believed to have perished in a suspicious car crash. Upon arriving in Ryme City and encountering some strange phenomenon linked to a vial emanating purple colored gas, Tim meets his Dad's former partner, a fuzzy yellow Pikachu (Reynolds), Lucy Stevens (Kathryn Newton), an ambitious intern of a cub reporter, Howard Clifford (Bill Nighy) the visionary behind Ryme City, and a rather clueless police detective(Ken Watanabe).

De De Pyaar De Movie Review

De De Pyaar De Movie Review - Old man and the khichdi

De De Pyaar De
Director: Akiv Ali
Actors: Ajay Devgn, Rakul Preet, Tabu
Rating:Rating

This film's opening sequence should count as an incredibly smart/realistic update on that standard, old Bollywood scene: The heroine (Rakul Preet) in this movie, after a drunken night, wakes up nude in the hero's bed/home. It appears that they could've slept with each other. Or at least the heroine, as with the movies back in the day (think DDLJ), instantly assumes that they did. But rather than feeling guilt/shame over the proverbial loss of izzat, she just wants to ensure that the guy doesn't make a big deal of it instead.

It's just sex, or a one-night-stand, she wants him to know—nothing more. What follows is also movie's best one-liner, questioning the idea of fidelity, as it's been traditionally accepted: "Ek baar sone se pyaar ho jata hai? Toh ek baar sone se pyaar kho kaise jaata hai? (Do you fall in love the only time you sleep with someone? Then why does one assume you have altogether fallen out of love with someone, because you once slept with someone else?)" Especially referring to the early scenes, because that usually sets the tone for the rest of a film. Or at least that's what one presumed, going by this picture's promos, or at least being aware of the basic plot.

Ajay Devgn plays the lead role; and his own age, for once. He's 50. The girl is, I guess, 25. Superstars older than Devgn have probably been with women much younger. The lead couple in the film lives in London, where I can't imagine anyone furiously batting an eyelid over such a match. You might wanna know more about how an adult, mature, urbane relationship of this nature might pan out, with its own quirks, and plausibly fresh ground-rules. You wait rather expectantly. R Balki's Cheeni Kum (2007), also starring Tabu, then 35, interested in Amitabh Bachchan, then 64, worked along those lines. Likewise, this is supposed to be a romantic comedy. And there is no way to pull off that genre, without a certain level of subversion.

And, yet, some films just seem to have a switch on their timeline, from whereon things just go downhill thereafter. For me, it's again an early moment in this movie when Singham plays in the background score. Devgn's hatta-katta character impresses the young girl, beating up a bunch of goons on the street. She is floored. Not that the rest of the script has much to do with that scene—it shifts to India. Just that things simply go adrift into a 'territory' that film-trade folk might call 'UP-Delhi/ Punjab'.

Not talking about songs, and dance. That has its own place. The film just stops being about a relationship; let alone romance, or comedy. It's almost like the filmmakers are certain the intended audience won't connect much with such a young-old love, by itself, in a single screen theatre. Well if you think they can't take it, then why make it? All stories, one can argue, starts with the fundamental question: 'What if?' The underlying theme or starting point here appears to be: 'What if a 50-year-old man, having consensually separated from his wife, briefly returns home, among his kids, and father and mother, etc?' Frankly, didn't know that's how this 'old man and the khichdi' was meant to flow. Well, now you do. Even if I did: 'What if I didn't care?' Certainly didn't.

The Hustle Movie Review - A Dull, unenlivening Con-Comedy

The silly antics, the one-upmanship, the gamey competitiveness - isn't enough for the actresses to strike sparks off each other and create a conflagration of engagement

The Hustle Movie Review - A Dull, unenlivening Con-ComedyThe Hustle

U/A: Comedy
Cast: Anne Hathaway, Rebel Wilson, Alex Sharp, Ingrid Oliver
Director: Chris Addison
Rating:Rating

Director Chris Addison's gender-swapped remake of the 1988 Michael Caine-Steve Martin comedy "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," (which in turn was a remake of the 1964 David Niven-Marlon Brando comedy "Bedtime Story") is more likely to get you depressed than make you laugh. It is meant to be funny but it's not.

Josephine Chesterfield(Anne Hathaway) has conned rich posh fools with absolute impunity thanks to a police inspector (Ingrid Oliver), who protects her for a price. Penny Rust (Rebel Wilson) on the other hand, plays low stakes cons on unsuspecting ordinary folk. They bump into each other and both realise the value of teaming up to pull off a really big con – but they still don't trust each other enough or do they?

Penny, on realising the extent of Josephine's extraordinary wealth insists on staying and learning from the master. They devise a competition to con an unsuspecting tech billionaire Thomas Westerburg (Alex Sharp) out of $500,000. Whoever wins gets to stay in the fictitious French Riviera town of Beaumont-sur-Mer with ample opportunity to swindle tourists and gamblers out of their millions.

The two lead characters say they con the opposite sex to get back at the men who've exploited women for far too long but nothing in the film suggests they have a hidden dramatic vein pushing them towards such well calculated vengeance. In fact there's no real drama here – just a lot of verbose positioning that fails to curry favour.

Hathaway puts on her faux act with a series of clingy dresses and fake accents while Wilson continues her stand-up routine with pratfalls and deadpan. Neither Hathaway nor Wilson are able to bridge the huge gap that the unaccomplished, dim, patronizing writing exposes them to. The silly antics, the one upmanship, the gamey competitiveness - isn't enough for the actresses to strike sparks off each other and create a conflagration of engagement.

The lack of chemistry between the two makes this experience tedious and exacting to say the least. The lack of a well-developed plot (script credited to Jac Schaeffer as well as Stanley Shapiro, Paul Henning and Dale Launer, who wrote the original material) might not have mattered much if the two lead actresses had managed to play off each other with well-timed asides. The jokes fall flat and there's no real pick-up in the lackluster narrative. This one is rather unlikely to get off the starter blocks at the Box office!

John Wick Chapter 3 Parabellum Movie Review - Stylish but 'Repeat' mayhem

Action for actions sake begins to pall after some time. And with Reeves looking dazed all the way through, even the action begins to look suspect!

John Wick Chapter 3 Parabellum Movie Review - Stylish but 'Repeat' mayhemJohn Wick Chapter 3 Parabellum

This one is basically for the fans of the franchise. The narrative plays out like a digital game with John Wick( Keanu Reeves) having to overcome incrementing degrees of difficulty as he fights his way through European, Asian and mid-eastern assassins who are on the $14 million contract for his life. Like the Latin word 'Parabellum' in the title exalts 'Prepare for War!'

The film is two hours plus of incessant, choreographed and digitally stylised violence with a body count that will rival even the most destructive of disasters. The film has no story to tell, the dialogues don't have any great meaning and logic (if you can find any) is at a premium. Parabellum is meant to set the stage for a grander conflict, which, in this series' book means using the next level of technology to mask Reeves' flaws as an actor cum action hero while continuing to lend him an 'everlasting' mystique that is totally confounding.

In this film, he literally gets brutalised and frankly, no mere human could have survived the beating he takes, yet Wick survives and annihilates his opponents. That's probably the premise of every edition of this 'surprise' hit franchise. The guy is supposed to be emotionless, yet he is out there killing those who harmed his family and his dog. Wick is a superhero without the cape and sci-fi mumbo-jumbo. And he will survive, come what may. The mythology here is pretty much questionable.

The narrative begins in dramatic fashion with the action kick-starting as Wick races through midtown Manhattan with less than an hour to spare before he gets excommunicated from the global community of assassins. Wick has a close shave with a Giant in a library, overcomes a series of assassins while improvising continuously and then gets caught up in a horse farm, gets trampled and run over and yet survives to fight another war. Wick then goes to what looks like a rundown theatre (where Ballerinas and fight exponents practice their art) and seeks out the Madam(Anjelica Huston) from whom he seeks a safe passage to Morocco. Then comes the Moroccan interlude involving Sophia (Halle Berry) who is forced to repay Wick for having saved her daughter –followed by a trip to the desert and then the final set-piece.

The best action in the film comes in the first 15 minutes, the rest of the time it's merely playing catch-up. The narrative is designed as a never-ending cycle of violence with every choreographed action set-piece looking more and more incredible and implausible as time goes by. The problem really is that this mythology doesn't have 'believable heft' in its design. Action for action's sake begins to pall after some time. And with Reeves looking dazed all the way through, even the action begins to look suspect!

Katrina Kaif was in no pressure to work with Salman Khan in Bharat

Last year, Priyanka Chopra Jonas was cast as the female lead in Bharat but she quit the film ahead of her wedding to American singer Nick Jonas. The makers then approached Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif was in no pressure to work with Salman Khan in Bharat

When Priyanka Chopra walked out of Salman Khan-starrer Bharat, the makers of the film approached Katrina Kaif to play to the role of Kumud. In a media interaction, the actor confessed that there was no pressure from director Ali Abbas Zafar or superstar Salman Khan to be a part of the project.

"I was fully under the impression that they were going to begin the shoot. And as far as my knowledge is concerned Priyanka (Chopra) was in the film. It was Ali (Abbas Zafar) who told me that `There is a little change in plan and for some reasons, she is no longer part of the film and I am sending you the script, just read it and react to it'. 'And he absolutely put no pressure, it was just that you react to the script. I read the script and felt this is his best work so far. It was an amazing character to play and then we got straight into work," Katrina told reporters here at the song launch event of "Bharat".

The 35-year-old star, who plays the role of Salman's love interest in the film, said 'Kumud' is one of her best characters so far. "I count this as my best character. She is a support for Bharat's character throughout the film and so her journey also continues in the film. We won't get into details as we want to keep some surprises. 'A lot of hard work has gone in getting the look right in every era. Getting the time and essence right makes the character look believable. We left no stone unturned to try and do our best,' she said. Katrina said "Bharat" is once in a lifetime opportunity for her.

"When I read the script I fell in love with my character. I was very excited to get an opportunity like this. It was a fulfilling journey on the sets of this film. It has been an incredible experience working on this film. It has been the best film so far." Salman interrupted and said Katrina deserves a National Award for the film. "She will get a National Award for the film. Without any jokes, she is so good in the film and she has worked very hard,' he said. 'Bharat' releases on June 5.

Amazon faces backlash for selling toilet seat covers, rugs with images of Hindu gods

Some of the items with images of Hindu gods are no longer available for purchase, suggesting that Amazon might have been withdrawing them

Amazon.com faced a social media backlash on Thursday after toilet seat covers and other items with images of Hindu gods were spotted on the U.S. retailer's website, making #BoycottAmazon the country's top trending topic on Twitter.

Thousands of Twitter users backed the call for the boycott, with some tagging Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj and urging her to take action against the world's biggest online retailer.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The episode is reminiscent of an incident in 2017 when New Delhi took the Seattle, Washington-based company to task after its Canadian website was spotted selling doormats resembling India's flag.

Ms. Swaraj at the time threatened to rescind visas of Amazon employees if the doormats were not removed from its site.

Reuters found several listings of toilet seat covers, yoga mats, sneakers, rugs and other items depicting Hindu gods, or sacred Hindu symbols, on Amazon's U.S. website.

Some of the items were no longer available for purchase, suggesting that Amazon may have been withdrawing some of the items, as it did in 2017.

"Until you hit these Hindu-phobics Business hard they will keep on insulting your gods, your beliefs and your entire civilisation," tweeted Sumit Kandel, whose profile describes him as a film trade analyst.

Infosys offers 50 million shares to employees

Posted: 18 May 2019 01:33 AM PDT

Move aims to retain, attract top talent

Digital technology and consulting major Infosys on Wednesday introduced an expanded stock ownership programme, aimed at retaining and attracting top talent.

The company's board of directors has approved the the Infosys Expanded Stock Ownership Program 2019 that links long-term employee incentives with shareholder value creation. It is also expected to broaden and deepen employee ownership of the company.

This programme proposes to allocate 50 million shares (or five crore shares) equating 1.15% of the company's equity shares to a broad base of employees, which will vest on challenging performance criteria, said the company.

Salil Parekh, CEO & MD, Infosys, said, "Infosys has been a pioneer for many firsts in India, and this programme is a key milestone as it sets another benchmark in the industry."

"Our employees are our biggest asset and through this programme, we aim to recognise and reward individuals who are committed to driving value creation for all the stakeholders through their continued and consistent performance. By making employees owners, they get an opportunity to be beneficiaries in the long-term success of the company and realise the results of their work and dedication."

The Infosys Expanded Stock Ownership Program 2019, under which grants will vest based on performance, aims to align employee interest with shareholder value creation, incentivise, attract and retain key talent, and reward employee performance with ownership.

The grants allocated to employees over a period of seven years will vest based on challenging performance criteria of viz. relative total shareholder return (TSR) against an industry peer group, relative TSR against domestic and global indices and operating lead performance metrics such as total revenue and digital revenue growth, and operating margins.

The proposal is subject to shareholder approval.

U.S. President Donald Trump announces new points-based green card system

Posted: 18 May 2019 01:31 AM PDT

Education, language skills to be rewarded in new proposal

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday announced a proposal that will include significant changes to the way green cards are allocated, by dramatically reducing the number of family-based green cards and moving towards a points-based ("merit-based") system that will reward, among other factors, education, skills and English language proficiency. The plan, which the President outlined at a Rose Garden gathering, with senior administration officials and influential Hill Republicans in attendance, sought to boost border security and tighten asylum procedures.

President Donald Trump speaks on immigration from the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington, Thursday, May 16, 2019.

Mr. Trump's new plan, details of which had already been reported widely in the U.S. media before the announcement, will dramatically increase the number of green cards that are given through the skills route versus the family-based route. However, the overall number of green cards, just over 1.1 million in 2017, will remain the same.

Currently about 12% of those receiving green cards entered the U.S. based on skill-based visas (such as the H1B), while some 66% are family-based green cards. The new proposal will increase skills-based green cards to 57%. Points will be awarded to applicants based on their education, work experience, age (more points for younger workers), English language ability etc. New immigrants will have to show that they can financially support themselves and will need to pass a civics exam.

Mr Trump also announced that there would be a new "Build America" visa – details of which were not provided on Thursday. His Rose Garden speech made references to foreign workers displacing low income Americans' jobs and highly valuable graduates leaving America to start companies in their own countries because they could not get a visa in America.

People given Green Cards on humanitarian and diversity grounds will now only constitute 10% of all Green Card recipients, according to a handout given to the press at the end of the Rose Garden event. Currently, the diversity lottery offers 50,000 green cards to under-represented groups each year.

The proposals, if they eventually turn into law, are likely to have a significant impact on Indians who interact with the U.S. immigration system. A large majority (over 70%) of H1B visas, for skilled workers, went to Indians in fiscal year 2018. Many of these are eventually converted to green cards. Indian residents getting green cards have been in the range of 57,000-62,000 in the 2015-2017 period.

However, it is far from clear that a shift towards a points-based system will make the prospects of Indian skilled migrants wanting to settle in the U.S. easier, as bringing family members over, especially elderly parents, may get more complicated. Mr Trump said that spouses and children will be prioritized under the new system.

"If Trump's plan became law, millions of U.S. citizens and permanent residents—including those who first arrived as H-1B workers—would no longer be able live in America with their parents and children," Doug Rand, who worked on immigration in the Obama White House and is now co-founder of Boundless Immigration, a firm that helps immigrants get green cards and U.S. citizenship, told The Hindu.

"But this has no chance of becoming law—it's just a cynical PR move that pays lip service to high-skill immigration even as the Trump administration is systematically dismantling high-skill immigration with every tool at its disposal," Mr Rand said. The Trump administration has made regulation around legal immigration more stringent, such as by seeking to clamp down on work-permits for spouses of migrants.

The second part of the White House proposal seeks to reduce illegal migration to the U.S. by building "physical barriers" in sections of the southern border with Mexico. It will also make it harder for individuals to claim asylum (which is a right under U.S. and international law). It will create a border security trust fund , which is funded by fees collected at the border, Mr Trump said.

The White House immigration plan was designed, as per reports, by Mr Trump's son-in-law and advisor Jared Kushner and Stephen Miller, senior advisor to Mr Trump, who is considered a right-wing immigration hardliner .

The proposal seeks to bring Republicans together around the immigration debate that will be a focus in the 2020 Presidential elections. However it is by no means a given that it appeal to the Republicans. Mr Kushner and Mr Miller lobbied Congressional Republicans earlier this week and reportedly failed to get strong support.

It is even less certain that Democrats will support the bill. Based on details currently available, the proposal also does not appear to address concerns the Democrats have with current asylum laws. It also remains silent on how to deal with the status of millions of "dreamers", individuals who were brought into the U.S. illegally as minors.

"The idea that for every immigrant they help, they "hurt one, all of that is no good," the New York Times quoted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as saying.

"Don't come up with a plan that Stephen Miller rubber stamps and say, 'Now pass it.' It's not going to happen," Mr Schumer said.

"I don't think it's designed to get Democratic support as much as it is to unify the Republican Party around border security, a negotiating position," Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Lindsey Graham, a Trump ally, said. Mr Graham released his own immigration proposal on Wednesday.
