Darkest Dungeon Expanding with Crimson Court DLC

Darkest Dungeon is expanding with The Crimson Court DLC. To celebrate today’s launch, Red Hook Studios has released its official (and very dark) trailer.

Darkest Dungeon The Crimson Court

This groundbreaking RPG is a gritty dark game and it’s getting darker with The Crimson Court. The new DLC comes with a new campaign including a brand new story line and a new dungeon to explore. In addition, there is a new hero class, new monsters, new bosses as well as the Fanatic, a wandering mini-boss. Players will also be able to provide trinkets for every hero and upgrade buildings in Hamlet. Lastly, the DLC is designed to be played with a pre-existing character or with a totally new one.

  • A new hero class. "Awash in blood and delusion, they bear the burden of a thousand lifetimes."
  • A new dungeon region: The Courtyard
  • A full faction of new deadly foes
  • 5 new Bosses with some of the most complex and devious mechanics yet.
  • A new wandering boss: The Fanatic
  • Districts: 10 new buildings to upgrade your Hamlet
  • Massive, sprawling maps with locked doors, prisoner rooms, and progress saves
  • Lore-driven trinket sets for all heroes – with set bonuses!

Check out the official site or Steam page to learn more.

You Should Be Playing: Shantae: Half-Genie Hero

You Should Be Playing: Shantae: Half-Genie Hero

You may or may not have heard of Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. Kickstarted to the tune of over $750K, it was one of the crowdsourcing platform’s first big hits when it launched its campaign in 2013. Like many of you, I missed its original release at the tail end of 2016. I mean, there have been so many good games in the past six to eight months, I think we should be forgiven for missing Shantae. But it’s never too late to right a wrong, and with last week’s release on the Nintendo Switch, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero definitely deserves your attention.

What is Shantae: Half-Genie Hero?

The latest in a series dating back to 2002 from Capcom, Wayforward’s Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is the resurrection of a cult-hit side-scrolling platformer.  Now run by WayForward (whose Creative Director is Shantae creator Matt Bozon), the series is seeing new life on the current gen systems.  It’s a side-scrolling adventure with tons of tongue-in-cheek humor, RPG elements, puzzles, and massive boss battles. It also lets you dance to change into crabs and monkeys, so it’s basically the best game ever.

The Story

Late one night, the half-genie Shantae is awoken by the sound of a voice. Following it outside, she discovers a secret cave, where a messenger from the Genie Realm warns her of an impending evil that only she can defeat, but disappears before it can elaborate further. Shantae suddenly awakens, revealing the experience to have been a dream. She goes to visit her Uncle Mimic, who is working on a new invention, the Dynamo, which will keep Scuttle Town constantly powered and safe from attack. However, the pirate Risky Boots begins a siege on Scuttle Town, with one of her Tinkerbat minions stealing Mimic’s blueprints. Shantae gives chase and defeats Risky, retrieving the blueprints, but Mayor Scuttlebutt once again fires her from her position as the town’s guardian genie due to Risky’s escape and the damage incurred. Mimic reveals that several components are still needed to complete the Dynamo, so Shantae begins searching across Sequin Land for the remaining components, helping those she finds in need of assistance along the way.

Why it’s awesome…

Platformers have been making something of a resurgence in recent years thanks to the hits like Shovel Knight, Cave Story, and more. Shantae and her games are very much an inspiration to those modern classics. Before they were the cool kids, Shantae was bringing the platformer into the current gen. It helps that the humor is top notch, the side-quests and RPG elements are well-conceived, and the actual level design is clever and fun throughout the entire game. Heck, as you unlock shape-shifting dances, there’s even a bit of Metroid-esque design as you can go back and re-explore older levels to find new secrets and rewards.

For $20, there are a million great games to play, and tons of them are already on the Switch. But for my 2 cents, I’d suggest you drop that Andrew Jackson paper on Shantae: Half-Genie Hero. If you like classic platformers with modern polish and sensibilities, you will not be disappointed. It’s worth noting that it comes with all the DLC as well, including the recently announced Pirate Queen’s Quest.

Days Gone May Be Headed Your Way This Year

Days Gone May Be Headed Your Way This Year

Days Gone might be headed to PlayStation 4 on December 29, 2017. The game’s date was revealed in an E3 Sony compilation video that has since been removed.

You can still, however, check out the E3 trailer:

Days Gone

Deacon St. John is the star of the game and is a man trying to survive which is, in fact, the core of the game. Players deal with a full range of human emotion including regret, madness, loss, friendship and much more. However, it is up to each to find hope in the madness.

DG features include:

  • a large open world
  • sandbox combat
  • unique enemies
  • setting in the Pacific Northwest

Using the power of PlayStation 4 and Unreal Engine 4, Days Gone offers an incredibly realistic and detailed open-world experience. Vast and hostile environments can be fully explored on the back of Deacon’s Drifter bike. Vehicles can be searched for useful items. Towns and buildings can be entered as well as searched – at great risk. All lighting is done in real time – eye adaption technology creates a real sense of dread when entering dark buildings; day and night have an impact on the experience as well as weather affecting enemy behavior.

You can’t necessarily bank on December 29th as the official release date. Take it all with a grain of salt. You can, however, bank on a PS 4 exclusive, at least for the time being.

Dying Light is Undead – getting a year’s worth of DLC

Techland won’t let their greatest game die, it seems. The cult favorite Dying Light is going to receive a year’s worth of DLC, and it’s all going to be free while the studio continues work on their next big project. From the press release:

"Original content is already in the works and our fans can expect to face new challenging enemies, master new gameplay mechanics, solve more Harran mysteries, and even explore never-seen-before locations. This translates to ten pieces of DLC in the first twelve months of our continuous support – available free for all players, across all platforms.

"Continuous support means also more updates, gameplay tweaks, and community events. As we firmly believe in active collaboration between the design team and players, we hope this announcement will encourage our fans to share their thoughts, stories, and ideas about how we can improve their experience even more."

Shadow of the Tomb Raider logo and keyart leaks

Shadow of the Tomb Raider logo and keyart leaks

As PCGamer points out via Neogaf, it seems that proposed logos and key art for the next Tomb Raider game are in the wild. A marketing and art company called TAKEOFF in Los Angeles, CA seems to have accidentally let the cat out of the bag when they uploaded their work on Shadow of the Tomb Raider to their website. WHOOPS.  The website is under maintenance and the post is taken down, but not before the Internet could make sure to grab a screenshot:

It’s odd that this game wasn’t announced at E3, but then again so much other stuff was it’s possible that Square Enix is looking to give Lara her own big reveal in the coming weeks or at PAX West in August. For sure though, it seems that we’re getting more of Miss Croft soon. Thank the gods.
