According to Polygon, CCP is currently undergoing a "gigantic cut" in its Reykjavik offices. The EVE Online developer confirmed that 49 people are being let go.

"As part of our strategy to focus on the EVE Universe, today CCP conducted a restructuring that resulted in the layoff of 49 people in our publishing organization," the firm said. "Though it is hard to say goodbye to our friends and family, this action concludes the process we started several months ago. CCP has provided severance packages and job placement assistance for those affected. Development teams and plans for EVE Online, EVE: Valkyrie, DUST 514, and Project Legion are not impacted by the restructuring."

[Update]: CCP has told Massively that the 49 layoffs were from multiple offices and not just Reykjavik.

Guild Wars 2 introduces DVR-like functionality to the Living World

    Guild Wars 2
If you're already a fan of Guild Wars 2's Living World feature, you may also be happy to hear about the Living World Journal announced today by developer ArenaNet.

The Living World Journal allows players to save and revisit each new episode of the Living World with what is described as DVR-like replay functionality. With more than two dozen free Living World updates, and Season 2 dropping on July 1, the new journal will especially help those who haven't had a chance to keep up with the intense update schedule for the game.

Game Director Colin Johanson comments, "With this addition to the story Journal, content from Living World episodes will be a mix of new story steps and open world content. Story steps will work just like existing story steps in the game today by taking you on a journey specific to your selected episode, which ties into a broader narrative from the season's continual story progress. Open world content additions to Living World updates will permanently expand or change the world of Tyria and will tie to the theme and story of the episode."

Massively commenter grandmoffdaryl came up with this interesting nugget last weekend. "The MMO generation is in the 'I'm busy' part of life right now with jobs and kids," he wrote. "Just wait to see what happens when the MMO generation reaches retirement age: the rebirth of the time-consuming MMO."

What do you think, Massively readers? Do you see deeper, more involving virtual worlds coming back into vogue at some point in the future, or do you think the genre will continue its move toward casual and more accessible designs?

Don't let your class define you; let you define your class. That's the message that Darkfall is trying to send with a new video showing off the "billions" of possible role combinations that are in the game. From melee magic users to high burst assassins, the options do seem intriguing.

Give it a watch after the break and let us know what classes and roles you would mix-and-match!

      Skara
Skara: The Blade Remains is building momentum to fully fund the title for a 2014 launch. The crossbreed of RPG and MOBA is now on Kickstarter, looking to raise $35,000 by July 4.

The game is already mostly done and will hit Steam Early Access next month, but 8-Bit Studios' CEO says that this will ensure an even better end product. "We already have a game to offer, but our vision for Skara: The Blade Remains is so much bigger. That's why we are doing a Kickstarter that will offer our backers great rewards if they join us for the wild ride that is game development," said Pablo Rodriguez.

We've got the new trailer for Skara after the break in case you're looking for some persuasion before dropping money on the game.

Launching an online multiplayer game is challenging in the best of conditions. Try launching one in the midst of a natural disaster, though. That's what Guns of Icarus developer Muse faced in October of 2012 as Hurricane Sandy battered the northeastern United States and left New Yorkers -- including Muse staffers -- without power and internet for weeks.

Muse CEO Howard Tsao tells the full story in the fourth part of his Guns of Icarus post-mortem, which Gamasutra published this morning.

Albion Online redefines character progression through the Destiny Board

      Albion Online
Albion Online is ditching the traditional level grind mechanic for something they call the Destiny Board that allows for more control and specialization for characters.

The Destiny board was molded entirely by the feedback of players who were unhappy with the previous version that saw progression they felt was too linear. Now, instead of completing tasks and quickly moving on to the next one, players can choose to dive deeper into any aspect of their character, from combat strategies and tactics to a specific craft or trade.

You can try the sandbox MMO out for yourself soon by signing up for the upcoming closed beta.

        Landmark
SOE released a new video today updating its playerbase with what's going on with each of its EverQuest titles.

EverQuest just released its level 95+ Tower of Rot and the living legacy raids and has more content on deck for those who own the Call of the Forsaken expansion. EverQuest 2 is giving a helping hand to players so that they can level up for the new expansion later this year. As for Landmark, the team is pretty excited about its water tech, caves, Player Studio, and Landmarks of Landmark contest. Unfortunately, EverQuest Next did not make the cut and was voted off the island.

You can watch the video after the jump.

In a post on the official site yesterday, Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen lead Brad McQuaid revealed that the project is moving ahead after some setbacks.

"We are back in full development mode," McQuaid announced. He went on to say that the team is working on client/server network code, laying out the zones, and preparing to create characters to explore them.

McQuaid promised weekly updates going forward and said that the studio is building up the team quickly. "We have more talented people willing to help out and dedicate themselves to the project than I would have ever imagined," he said. "We continue to be a bit overwhelmed, but this is a good problem to have." One position that he's looking for is a CEO for the studio to allow him to focus on the creative side of things.
