Square details Final Fantasy XI June update

Final Fantasy XI's upcoming June update will see a gaggle of new quests for the city of Adoulin. According to official word from Square Enix, players will "find out more about the Order of Janniston's struggles with a young man who suddenly fell ill in 'Sick and Tired,' and they'll witness the struggles of Cid's son Midras as he researches new ways to grow vegetables on the Ulbukan continent in 'Vegetable Vegetable Crisis.' Experience a different side of Adoulin with these and other serial tales!"

The June update is scheduled to drop tomorrow, June 17th. You can find out more info on the official forums.

The Mog Log: Final Fantasy XIV's E3 revelations

Don't call it a comeback, I've been here for years.  Rocking my peers, etc.
Let me open off with an apology: Last week didn't feature a Mog Log column, and that happened without warning. This was a calculated decision; I figured last Monday it would be silly to talk about a game promised many exciting E3 reveals before those reveals when there was a game that had just launched. So I held off talking about Final Fantasy XIV until this week, but I am sorry if anyone had a fear this column was being unceremoniously dropped.

But oh my, was it ever worth it. Here we are in the wake of E3 fit to burst with new information, new revelations, all the fun stuff you could ask for from the convention. It's ever so joyous. So let's talk about what we've learned about the next patch, the patch after that, vague rumblings of the future, and... um... darn. There was one big thing that got unveiled at E3, wasn't there?

    NGames teases new Star Trek 'MMO'

    We get all kinds of press releases here at the Massively office tower, some of them worth printing and some of them not. This latest one is pretty cryptic, since it neglects to nail down a title for the game it's hyping. Since the words Star Trek will probably fall somewhere in said title, though, we figured you'd want to know about it.

    The game is purportedly an MMO, though to what extent publisher NGames doesn't say. In fact it doesn't say much of anything gameplay-related, though the title looks to be browser-based and set in Fluidic Space. "Combat plays a pivotal role," the press release mentions, with players needing to side with either the Klingons or the Federation. NGames says that it will "be revealing more information in the coming weeks."

      Crowdfunded EVE Online documentary premieres July 11

      The crowdfunded indie documentary that takes a behind-the-scenes look at EVE Online's community is set to premiere on July 11, 2014. A Tale of Internet Spaceships was filmed during 2013's EVE Fanfest and aims to show what makes the sci-fi MMO so special to its players.

      "This candid exploration of a video game community investigates the sometimes complicated relationship between EVE's dedicated player base and the game's developers, CCP Games," a press release from Sorgenfri Productions states. "It also documents one of the most tumultuous times in the game's lifespan -- the release of the Incarna expansion -- which turned out to be one of the most important moments in the history of online roleplaying games."

      Thanks to a successful $3000 Indiegogo campaign, the documentary will be published for free on YouTube and Vimeo right after its premiere at 8pm on July 11th. A teaser trailer is provided after the cut below.

        E3 2014: A quick hands-on with Destiny

        As much as you might want have wanted to sink your teeth into Destiny at E3 2014, the lines and waits were pretty long. Sadly, even after the wait we were only afforded a small taste of what Bungie's upcoming shooter has to offer before the next group was shuffled through.

        After watching a video that touted plenty of public events, three-man strikes, dungeons, and story content, I followed the herd into a room and was subsequently not allowed to play any of that. Instead, the machines were all set up in teams for multi-player PvP matches only. Using pre-made con characters (players will be able to take their own characters in the competitive multiplayer mode at release), we dove right into two back-to-back capture-the-flag scenarios. On the plus side, the two maps highlighted the good graphics and sported very different landscapes; besides the very distinct themes, one had vehicles to utilize while the other did not. On the negative side, throwing together such random teams of folks who've never touched the game before lead to a less-than-ideal experience in teamwork.

        Unfortunately, the brief play-test that focused on only PvP allowed for little in-depth exploration of the title. How's Destiny PvE and the rest of its sci-fi quasi-MMO experience? We'll let you know when beta opens July 17th on the PS4!

          The Daily Grind: Should MMOs change fundamental design rules post-launch?

          A few weeks ago, ArenaNet added a new buyable perk to the Guild Wars 2 cash shop: a crafting license that allows an account's entire roster of characters to pick up an extra craft skill. In other words, buying this license means your characters can run three production craft skills, not just the original two.

          My first reaction was wooo, awesome! But after some reflection, I wondered whether the change wasn't more than cosmetic. Having three craft skills on every character affects leveling rates and PvE zone population, inflates the item market, impacts the resource market, and could even alter whether players buy other items from the cash shop (like character and inventory slots). I bet players who've dropped craft skills to pick up new ones won't be pleased, either. It's definitely more than just a fun cosmetic thing. While this tweak probably won't matter that much in the long-run of a game like Guild Wars 2, fundamental changes made midstream have certainly been known to haunt some games forever.

              PlanetSide 2 players are invited to fight over new server name

              Usually a server merge is a somber affair, but the team at PlanetSide 2 views the upcoming consolidation between Waterson and Mattherson as an opportunity for a cage match to the death. The prize? The right to retain the winning side's server name following the merge.

              SOE is planning a "ServerSmash" battle for Friday, June 20th, between the inhabitants of Waterson and Mattherson. Outfits can sign up to represent their server during the event.

              The studio acknowledged that this event might be a siren's call to griefers and asked for good sportsmanship: "We implore both the participating servers, as well as the community at large, to take the high ground and help us make this a fun, amazing event that we can all appreciate."

              Albion Online's mounts are for riding, not fighting

              A new dev diary regarding Albion Online's mounts reveals that the beasts will be strictly for transportation only.

              "The player is unable to fight, gather or interact with any buildings while on horseback. Mounts will provide a number of buffs to the character, which are effective immediately when they mount, and deactivate when they dismount," the team posted.

              While mounts won't be trampling over enemy's corpses, they will come in armored versions that can shrug off more damage if a player is attacked. Mounts are not only represented by horses, but oxen as well, with the latter being more suited to transporting goods over long distances.

              E3 2014: Shroud of the Avatar's Garriott and Long emphasize immersion

              Touted as the spiritual successor to Ultima Online by its creators, Shroud of the Avatar aims to fill a sandbox-shaped void in the modern MMOverse. Judging by the successful crowdfunding campaign and continued support by backers, I know there are plenty of players who are eager for that to happen and believe SotA is the game to do it.

              Are backers getting what they paid for? One weekend every month they can jump in and experience a new release of the game and offer feedback to the development team. And thanks to E3 2014, I also got to jump in and get some hands-on time with the latest release of the game. On top of that, I spoke with Richard Garriott and Executive Producer Starr Long about everything from player economy and pay-to-win concerns to combat, immersion, and player-contributed content.
