E3 2014: Hands-on with Black Gold's PvP Posted: 12 Jun 2014 09:00 AM PDT Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Events (Real-World), Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, PvP, PvE, Opinion, Free-to-Play, Hands-On, First Impressions, Events (Massively's Coverage), Steampunk, Black Gold It can be hard to demo an MMO at E3. Some studios stick a bunch of journalists together and have us try an instance, which can be fun or, if the worst of us ends up taking a key position, it can be rather frustrating. Other studios let you into a questing area but, to be brutally honest, these usually feel pretty stale compared to the nearby console games that let you do more than kill 10 goblins.Snail Games broke from the mold by letting us PvP in its upcoming Black Gold Online MMO, and while there were some issues, I felt a bit more confident about the title than I did last year. E3 2014: Hands-on with Star Citizen and a chat with Chris Roberts Posted: 12 Jun 2014 08:00 AM PDT Filed under: Sci-Fi, Events (Real-World), Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, News Items, Opinion, Hands-On, First Impressions, Events (Massively's Coverage), Sandbox, Crowdfunding, Star Citizen, Buy-to-Play Chris Roberts prefers a joystick or controller to the mouse and keyboard. This came up immediately upon meeting him for our Star Citizen demo/interview at this year's E3. As someone who's mainly watched news on the game from the sidelines, sitting in awe of what looks like a terribly complex title with tons of gameplay options, I was a bit intimidated going into this sit-down. But I came out of it feeling, well, relaxed.Continue reading E3 2014: Hands-on with Star Citizen and a chat with Chris Roberts E3 2014: Hands-on with Star Citizen and a chat with Chris Roberts originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 12 Jun 2014 10:00:00 EST. E3 2014: FFXIV's Yoshida on 2.4, 3.0, new classes, and more Posted: 12 Jun 2014 07:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Interviews, Events (Massively's Coverage), Final Fantasy XIV, Subscription After the recent E3 2014 announcement that Final Fantasy XIV was getting a new class and a marriage system, fans have been understandably eager to learn more. And the best way to do that is go to the source! We sat down with producer Naoki Yoshida to discuss the content slated for upcoming patches and expansions. Before delving into the new, Yoshida spoke about the old. He noted that since last year's expo, FFXIV has enjoyed a successful relaunch, added a couple of major updates, and given millions of gamers around the world the opportunity to play. He then led into the new by saying, "We want to continue to grow the game from here. We have a lot of exciting content building up to 3.0." Part of said growing includes expanding the availability of the game by getting it into even more regions; this summer, for example, FFXIV will launch in China. Another part of the growth process is expanding the content and introducing new features, which is where patch 2.4 and the 3.0 expansion come in. The Daily Grind: Are you in tune with your MMO's latest update? Posted: 12 Jun 2014 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: Sci-Fi, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, Opinion, Free-to-Play, The Daily Grind, Star Wars: The Old Republic I've been slowly working my way through a couple of Star Wars: The Old Republic class stories in recent weeks, and while I'll occasionally duo or pop into a Flashpoint PUG to close an XP gap, I haven't really been paying attention to what else is going on with the game.Case in point is this week's 2.8 update. I guess the main feature is the new stupid tax (a.k.a. gambling) along with increased rewards for Galactic Starfighter matches. Neither of these activities appeals to me in the slightest, so while I'm kinda pleased to see SWTOR getting any sort of update, this particular one rates somewhere between meh and huh-they-actually-spent-dev-time-on-that? What about you, Massively readers? Are you in tune with the latest updates in your MMO of choice, or are you doing your own thing? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. Dungeons & Dragons Online launches Update 22 Posted: 11 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Classes, Game Mechanics, Patches, News Items, Free-to-Play Are you ready to buckle your swash? Has your swash been buckled in anticipation? Do you own a variety of buckles and swashes? Because Dungeons & Dragons Online has just released Update 22 onto the live servers, and that means that Bards will have plenty of buckleswashing to do with the addition of the Swashbuckler enhancement line! Dance, parry, crack horrible puns, and stab at people while still retaining all of the usual song-based mechanics of Bards. It's free for everyone!Update 22 also includes an epic-level upgrade to Three Barrel Cove, perfectly complementing the newly swacklebushing methods of Bards. There are also major improvements to guild levels and guild airships, allowing guilds to hit level 200 while sporting new and improved facilities on new and improved airships. And there's new stuff in the cash shop, too, giving DDO players plenty to do if they ever tire of the interactions of swashes and buckles. Shards Online opens website with 24 hours left on Kickstarter Posted: 11 Jun 2014 01:30 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, MMO Industry, News Items, Sandbox, Crowdfunding As of this writing, Shards Online has 24 hours remaining on its Kickstarter program and has yet to break a quarter of its funding goal. Odds are that it's not going to hit that marker, although fans are encouraged to jump in and donate while the campaign is still running. But the team at Citadel Studios isn't giving up on the project and has launched a website for the game devoted to all things related to Shards Online.Despite what you may have suspected from the last paragraph, the page is not currently fishing for donations. The team will be holding the game's first community roundtable discussion on June 13th, starting at 8 p.m. EDT, when the developers will discuss what comes after Kickstarter and why there are no plans to ask for funding on the site directly. It'll be worth watching if you're a fan of the game -- and if you're a fan and still haven't donated, now is the time to do so. Player-driven development at 'core' of SOE's philosophy Posted: 11 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT Filed under: Business Models, Interviews, MMO Industry, Free-to-Play SOE President John Smedley is preaching the gospel of player-created content to any and all who will hear, saying, "Our player-driven development process is really at the core of who we are and who we've evolved into."In a new interview with Fortune, Smedley talked about the approach that SOE is taking with its open development, player-created content, and community monetization opportunities. "What we're trying to do is to expose the development process to our players and get them excited, let them see the stuff we're making as early as possible and get their opinions on shaping our games," he said. Smedley praised the "revolution" of Twitch streaming as a communication pathway, saying that it's helped players to truly understand what goes into making MMOs. He also pointed out how free-to-play has finally been embraced by the console crowd: "There's evidence now. It's fair to say that consoles took longer to get to free-to-play simply because the business model has been the same way for quite a while now. But they're seeing this amazing revenue generator from micro-transactions in free-to-play games."
