Why you sit when there is so much to be done? Every minute you spend sitting, a thousand NPCs die a gruesome death that could have been prevented by your immortal battle prowess! But you sit. You sit and you admire daffodils as you ignore the noise of innocents in peril. Hope that's one mighty fine sit!So who is this sitter? I'll let reader John introduce you: "Here is Pearl, my level 20 Archer in Final Fantasy XIV. She's obviously relaxing and enjoying the All Saint's Wake celebration. Holidays are the best time to explore the Final Fantasy world." Why you holiday? Why you holiday when people need rescuing? With great power comes great loafing off, apparently. The Daily Grind: If you could play only one studio's MMOs forever, what would it be? Posted: 03 Nov 2013 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Culture, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Miscellaneous OK, this is kind of a goofy hypothetical, but let's just go with it for a minute. What if, instead of being limited to playing one MMO for the rest of your life (the desert island scenario), you could only play one studio's MMOs for the rest of your life. In this scenario, you would have at your disposal all of the games that this one particular studio makes and will make, but no others. And publishers don't count (unless the studio also publishes). There are a few things to consider here, such as the studio's current line-up, how long you think the studio will last, and the depth and breadth of the studio's MMO library. SOE would probably be my pick here just because I don't think that studio is going anywhere, it has a wide selection, and there are a couple of big titles on the horizon. What about you? If you could only play one studio's MMOs forever, which one would it be and why? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! Ragnarok Online debuts on Steam Posted: 02 Nov 2013 07:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Launches, MMO Industry, Free-to-Play There might be several (dozen? hundred? it's hard to count) variations of Ragnarok Online out there right now, but today it's the free-to-play original that is debuting on Steam.Ragnarok Online has been an MMO staple since its launch in 2003, but it seems that making it to the Steam store is a good sign that it's "made it" in terms of industry-wide recognition. In any case, if you're the type to wait for an MMO to hit Valve's digital distribution platform before playing it, then today you have one more option from which to choose. Ragnarok Online celebrated its 10th anniversary this past summer. Ragnarok Online debuts on Steam originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 02 Nov 2013 21:00:00 EST. Warhammer Online goes free for final weeks Posted: 02 Nov 2013 06:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Business Models, Warhammer Online, Free-to-Play, Sunsets After years of fans asking for it, Warhammer Online has finally gone free-to-play. Unfortunately, we had to wait until the end of the game's lifespan to see it happen.Mythic announced that the title would be completely free for those who would like to play before the title sunsets and that subscriptions have been disabled. "To give Warhammer Online a proper sendoff we are opening the game to anyone free of charge that has or had an account in good standing starting October 31st, 2013," the studio wrote. "So please join us and help say goodbye to Warhammer Online in one last big WAAAGH!" Mythic also said that it is adding power-up NPCs to super-charge characters and other "unique experiences" for returning and loyal players. WAR will close down on December 18th. You can read some of our recollections of the title's history. Make My MMO: Crowdfunding October 20 - November 2, 2013 Posted: 02 Nov 2013 04:00 PM PDT Filed under: MMO Industry, Massively Meta, Miscellaneous, Crowdfunding, Make My MMO The news meter for crowdfunding keeps right on ticking. The last two weeks have seen a score of changes in the realm of community funding initiatives, with some titles experiencing success, others not meeting their goals, and even more joining the ranks. One big name in gaming, Brad McQuaid, is even planning on launching a campaign in the near future. The zombie-centric The Living was unsuccessful, and Story Quest Online failed for a second time. Mixmaster Online removed itself from the field and canceled its campaign. On the other hand, 8BitMMO met its first stretch goal, ensuring that a Mac edition of that game will be available for players. And then there's City of Titans, which is climbing closer to doubling its goal with only two days left. Finally, there are all the progress updates for those already-funded campaigns, conveniently rounded up right here for you in Make My MMO. The Mog Log: Understand Final Fantasy XIV's markets Posted: 02 Nov 2013 12:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Economy, Opinion, Consoles, Final Fantasy XIV, The Mog Log There are lots of ways to make money in Final Fantasy XIV, but the fastest way to increase your riches comes from smart use of the market boards. (Yes, you're not creating new money to enter the system; there are a lot of ways to do that, too. Go do some leves.) This is why I'm baffled at how many people understand the principle but don't understand how to sell things on the markets. Some of this probably comes from the fact that the system is never explained in great depth, but it doesn't help that the system isn't set up to work like many auction systems in other MMOs. So while some of you already grasp this and are enjoying the singular fun of being locked into a pricing war with three other people, others aren't sure how to get their Fleece to sell. Let's talk about some market truths you might not have realized.
