Massively exclusive: Take a desert trip in Elsword Posted: 18 Nov 2013 08:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Trailers, Video, Patches, Previews, News Items, Free-to-Play Do you want to take a vacation in the middle of the desert? Probably not in the real world, since the desert is generally known for being a place people try to avoid rather than a vacation destination. But Elsword isn't expecting you to go just for the screaming heat and lack of water. No, it's offering a whole pile of desert-based fun that revolves around smashing enemies, exploring new fields, and taking on dungeons. The region shown off in the new trailer gives a sneak peek at two new dungeons, Barren Sander and the Garpai Rocky Zone. There's also a level cap increase up to 64, giving you a variety of new tools for smashing the crap out of your foes in side-scrolling action. If that sounds like your sort of party, then by all means, check out the trailer just past the break and get ready to enjoy a desert vacation far more than you'd expect otherwise. Glitch assets freely available to public Posted: 18 Nov 2013 07:30 AM PST Filed under: MMO Industry, News Items, Sunsets Those who have mourned the closure of the 2-D browser sandbox Glitch now have a new way to revel in the memories: all of the game's art and animation assets. Tiny Speck has released everything into the public domain, so instead of only owning just a hardcover book of Glitch's art, fans can actually get their hands on the art and use it for whatever they want. What's included? Everything really, even the kitchen sink! President Stewart Butterfield said,"The team at Tiny Speck put years of work into the art for Glitch: many thousands of hours by a hugely talented team [spent] on illustration, animation, character designs, effects, avatar systems and environmental. The game didn't make it, but [we] couldn't stand the thought of all of that creative work shuttered away forever. Making it freely available to all as a public good is a worthy legacy for the project. We hope it will be useful for other creative projects, from student and artistic work to unfettered commercial use."[Source: Tiny Speck press release]

The Nexus Telegraph: Examining the Mordesh of WildStar Posted: 18 Nov 2013 07:00 AM PST Filed under: Sci-Fi, Lore, Opinion, Races, WildStar, The Nexus Telegraph, Subscription, Buy-to-Play No single race in WildStar has less to lose than the Mordesh. And no one has more to lose, at that. The simplest way of explaining the Mordesh is that they are the dirty little secret of the Exiles as a whole. They're the assassins, the pressure, the people who don't worry about doing something awful when it absolutely needs to be done. For all that the Exiles want to think of themselves as the good guys unfairly set upon by the Dominion, the Mordesh are the subtle reminder that there are no good guys -- there are just people. But that's not the whole of it. Unlike when I discussed the Granok, the Mordesh aren't just in this to bloody the Dominion's nose as much as possible. No, they've got all of their chips in this part of the game. And to understand why, we're going to need to zoom out a little bit and take a look at what got the Mordesh to their current position first. Yes folks, there might very well be some California dreaming going on as fall starts morphing into winter here in the northern hemisphere, but we know that most of us really have dreams of lands like Tyria or Telon instead. That whole outdoor weather thing won't even affect us when we are all snug as a bug in an MMO in front of our monitors -- barring any storms that threaten our internet connections, that is! While you are all comfy indoors, you can enjoy some Stream Team adventures on Massively TV and weigh in on your favorite in-game weather systems in this week's Outtakes.Continue reading The Stream Team: All the leaves are brown edition, November 18 - 24, 2013

The Daily Grind: What do you think about TSW's Issue 8? Posted: 18 Nov 2013 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Horror, Sci-Fi, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, PvE, Opinion, The Daily Grind, The Secret World, Dungeons, Buy-to-Play I did one of The Secret World's new instanced duo story dungeon things over the weekend, and while it was nothing revolutionary, I had a good time. There was something about the Council of Venice, and virtual reality training, and a return to an Egyptian hotel that now featured a bunch of helpless refugees and progressively more difficult mob spawns intent on eviscerating them. That said, I don't feel much like repeating it, even though there's some associated currency and rewards that I'm assuming are designed to tide players over until the Tokyo content patch arrives. What about you, Massively readers? Do you like the new Issue 8 stuff, or are you finding it a little grindy or otherwise lacking?

MMO Week in Review: Hope you like voxels Posted: 17 Nov 2013 05:00 PM PST Filed under: Massively Meta, Week in Review, Miscellaneous At the end of every week, we round up the best and most popular news stories, exclusive features, and insightful columns published on Massively and then present them all in one convenient place. If you missed a big MMO or WoW Insider story last week, you've come to the right post. This week, Trion Worlds officially revealed Trove, a brand-new MMO that provoked a minor riot among fans of similarly voxel-based multiplayer games who believe it's just a little too similar. Meanwhile, we snagged a detailed hands-on with SOE's latest F2P sandbox, the building toolset/game/toy EverQuest Next Landmark, and scoped out its not-so-F2P founder's packs. Punch trees for wood and read on for a roundup of the rest of this week's top MMO stories. Continue reading MMO Week in Review: Hope you like voxels

EVE Evolved: Getting ready for Rubicon Posted: 17 Nov 2013 03:00 PM PST Filed under: Sci-Fi, Trailers, Video, EVE Online, Economy, Events (In-Game), Expansions, Game Mechanics, PvP, Endgame, PvE, Opinion, EVE Evolved, Guides, Dev Diaries, Sandbox, Subscription If you've been saving up your Sisters of EVE loyalty points to get your hands on the faction's new exploration ships, be prepared to buy and build the blueprints as soon as the server comes up. These will be the first pirate faction ship blueprints that are available in high-security space, and a recent devblog confirmed that players have been collecting Sisters of EVE loyalty points like crazy lately in anticipation of the expansion, but those who get the built ships to market first will make an absolute killing. For the rest of us, getting ready for the expansion means planning where to set up a Mobile Depot for some quick profit-making enterprise or building a few small PvP ships to put the new warp speed mechanics to the test. In this week's EVE Evolved, I look at some of the best places to set up a Mobile Depot, re-consider the lure of low-security space, and propose adapting your PvP fleets to take advantage of the warp acceleration changes. DayZ footage may upset YouTube comment experts Posted: 17 Nov 2013 01:00 PM PST Filed under: Betas, Horror, Video, Bugs, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, News Items, Dev Diaries, Sandbox, Buy-to-Play Heads up, DayZ fans, creator Dean "Rocket" Hall has posted a new eight-minute video showcasing the current state of the zombie sandbox's pre-alpha build. As the video's disclaimer notes, the footage "may deeply trouble experts who post YouTube comments. It has not been approved by marketing and contains disturbing scenes such as poor FPS, floating loot, bad lighting, placeholder sounds, and many more bugs that obviously never occur in game development and therefore the project is completely doomed."Assuming you can get past all those gory details, you'll see some up-close-and-personal zombie killin' as well as exploration elements. "Our focus is on getting the alpha out, Hall says, "which means focusing on multiplayer [server] performance." Click past the cut to watch the clip. Stick and Rudder: How to be an informed Star Citizen Posted: 17 Nov 2013 11:00 AM PST Filed under: Sci-Fi, Business Models, Culture, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, Opinion, Sandbox, Crowdfunding, Stick and Rudder, Star Citizen, Buy-to-Play Massively's podcast fielded a listener question about Star Citizen and various other Kickstarters a couple weeks back, and while I answered it on our weekly show, I'd like to expand on it in more detail here. Call it a public service for people who are mildly interested in Cloud Imperium's space sim but not interested enough to scarf up the considerable amount of news flowing out of the studio these days. The question, in a nutshell, was how can a 30-person dev team make a triple-A title. There was more to it, including the usual concerns about crowdfunding, trust, and bits about investing vs. donating, but the dev team portion is the portion that I want to highlight.
