The Nexus Telegraph: Talking tasks with WildStar's PvE

Some of you really didn't like last week's format. I did, though!
At a glance, there are far fewer problems when dealing with PvE content compared to PvP content. WildStar's PvE options are a bit better established, and besides, all you need to do is provide the enemies and a reason to fight them. It's not as if you have to deal with all of the differences that you find in PvP, after all. Toss out some dungeons, give players a daily hub, and everything will work out perfectly, right?

The answer is no. Not even a little bit.

Just as you need a variety of different things in PvP to serve a multitude of playstyles, you need a variety of different opportunities for PvE players. It's still a header that covers a broad field of different playstyles and preferences, and that means there are a lot of different things that the game needs to offer. Bearing in mind that we're talking about the level cap here, let's take a look at what areas the game needs to support.

StarCraft Universe appeals to Kickstarter audience for help

StarCraft Universe appeals to Kickstarter audience for help
Remember StarCraft Universe, the fan-made mod that turned the RTS into an MMO? The project is still going strong after two years, but its development team is in dire need of funds to push it over the hill and into open beta testing. The solution? Kickstarter, of course.

Upheaval Arts hopes to raise $80,000 or more to finish the first act of the game and get it into public testing. Currently there are two races in the game (Terran and Protoss), although with stretch goals the Zerg are a possibility.

The team has some respectable names attached to the project, including Composer David Orr and voice actors Danielle McRae and Eric Dieter. StarCraft Universe will require Battle.net to play and will be completely free to all.

If you're concerned about Blizzard finally lowering the boom on this mod, well, don't. The team says that it's gotten the studio's approval: "While Blizzard is not directly affiliated with this project's production, we do communicate with them to submit bug reports and make technical requests. They have given their blessing/permission for us to launch this Kickstarter, and they are supporting our efforts by featuring SCU as an arcade highlight."

The Stream Team: Sleep is for the weak edition, August 12 - 18, 2013

The Stream Team Sleep is for the weak edition, August 12 18, 2013
Ever hit that point in life when sleep just gets in the way of all you want to do? Maybe it's a gaming marathon worthy of the record books or just a late-night raid you absolutely HAVE to be there for (you know if you aren't, your piece will drop and some PUG person will get it!). Or maybe it is an awesome con you're attending. No matter the reason, sleep seems to be the nemesis to our gaming, especially if we have to fit other real life stuff in the equation too.

So what can we do about it? No, an IV drip of pure caffeine is not the answer. Neither is the old toothpicks-and-tape bit. How about just add more stuff so you are too busy to think about sleeping? There are plenty of Stream Team adventures on Massively TV to keep you occupied so you don't even thing the "n" word. Now, up and at 'em, and make your plan of attack using the following schedule.

The Daily Grind: Have you returned to EQ or EQII thanks to EQN?

The Daily Grind - Have you returned to EQ or EQII thanks to EQN?
I'm pretty excited for EverQuest Next even though I've never been a huge fan of the franchise. I do enjoy EverQuest II to the point where I have a max-level character and dozens of houses, but I was never smitten with the original game due to its lack of features in comparison to Ultima Online and later, Star Wars: Galaxies.

EQN looks to be channeling at least a few parts of those two titles, though, and since Landmark is several months away, I've returned to EQII in order to get my Norrath fix. What about you, Massively readers? Are you an expatriate returning to EQ or EQII thanks to EQN?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

This week, Star Wars: The Old Republic launched update 2.3, the Titans of Industry patch, which brought with it new story and instanced content and a massive palette upgrade. We offered up our tips for tackling the new material and a scenic tour of the game, but the devs have already cast their eyes ahead; we learned they're planning for arena PvP and Oricon operations in update 2.4.

EVE Evolved: Alliance Tournament XI Grudge Match

              Posted: 11 Aug 2013 04:00 PM PDT

              Game title image
The largest alliance war in EVE Online's history is currently underway, with the latest battle to hit the news reaching over 4,000 players and shattering the world record for players involved in a single PvP battle. While massive battles like are becoming a regular occurrence in EVE and have dominated the news lately, the strategy of just throwing thousands of ships at the enemy and seeing if it works doesn't work in every corner of New Eden. Wormholes, for example, limit the mass of ships entering a hidden Sleeper star system at once, promoting smaller-scale conflicts that are more about deep strategy and execution than scale.

So it is for EVE Online's annual alliance tournament, a fairly matched drawing that attempts to simulate what would happen if small squads of ships from opposing alliances met on equal terms. Teams are drawn randomly against each other and put together squads of ships within the bounds of an imposed point limit. This year's tournament involved only 64 teams and had no elimination stage but still managed to pump out 128 action-packed matches with full commentary and studio coverage. The grand final even played host to the biggest grudge match in Alliance Tournament history as Pandemic Legion faced off against Hydra Reloaded.

In this week's EVE Evolved, I round up all the matches in this year's massive Alliance Tournament and discuss the explosive final that saw old tournament rivals face off for glory and huge in-game prizes.

Stick and Rudder: Wingman's Hangar is must-see Star Citizen TV

Stick and Rudder Wingman's Hangar is mustsee Star Citizen TV
OK, technically Star Citizen's weekly Wingman's Hangar webcast is must-see YouTube. I mean, does anyone still watch television? On a TV, really?

Over the past couple of weeks I've powered through my personal back catalogue of WH episodes, mostly for my own fanbot gratification but also to minimize the knowledge gaps in this column. And as I was watching, the strangest thing happened. I began to care about the people involved. Not care as in I'm-going-to-go-stalk-Eric-Peterson, but care as in the sort of distanced-but-semi-invested attachment that I form with characters in a particularly effective documentary film.

Venus Rising to feature sexual PvP, 16 positions

                  Venus Rising - Roosterblocker
So, Venus Rising. Would you like to know more? If so, check out an interview with FoxySoft CEO Alex Allen at MMORPGItalia. Recall that Venus Rising is the adult-oriented title formerly known as Orgia Romanus that has caused something of a stir in the MMO community due to its unapologetic portrayals of sex, nudity, etc.

Allen's interview touches on the three paths available to players (Merchant, Politician, Soldier), but that's not what you're really interested in, is it?

"Sexual activities are very much a part of the player's character development. You can't run around having all the sex you want just like you can't run around killing everything all the time," Allen explains. "Players can progress through 10 levels of expertise to eventually have 16 sexual positions to choose from during an encounter. Players will be able to invite other players into their personal home or a game-provided room to engage in sexual activities. Or players can visit any one of the game-provided brothels to learn from an NPC and gain experience that way."

Venus Rising's PvP will also pertain to sex, though how is not exactly clear other than that both the sex and the PvP will be "consensual." The game will feature a freemium business model with a "low monthly subscription" unlocking the adult content.
