Bill Gates Critical of Google's Charity Efforts

Posted: 09 Aug 2013 10:44 AM PDT

Bill Gates"When a kid gets diarrhea, there's no website for that."

Do you miss Bill Gates yet? The founder of Microsoft was oft criticized during his time spent with the company he helped create, and for some, his genius wasn't truly appreciated until he retired, handing over the reins to Steve Ballmer who, let's face it, hasn't been doing a tremendous job. These days Gates is all about his charity and philanthropy work, but at the same time, he's very much in tune with the tech world, especially as it relates to uplifting the poor and underprivileged, and he's always good for a soundbite.

All it took to get one from him is a question about Google's Project Loon, an initiative to bring high-speed Internet access to all corners of the world using a network of balloons traveling on the edge of space.

Project Loon

"When you're dying of malaria, I suppose you'll look up and see that balloon, and I'm not sure how it'll help you. When a kid gets diarrhea, no, there's no website that relieves that," Gates told Bloomberg in an interview. "Certainly I'm a huge believer in the digital revolution. And connecting up primary-health-care centers, connecting up schools, those are good things. But no, those are not, for the really low-income countries, unless you directly say we're going to do something about malaria."

You get the sense that Gates is disappointed with Google's involvement in charity. He goes on to say that Google talked a big game about doing all kinds of things, and at one point even hired Larry Brilliant to spearhead its philanthropic efforts, but have since "shut it all down" and are now "just doing their core thing."

And as for Microsoft? Gates insists he doesn't miss having an operational role at his old company, even now that Microsoft is a bit of an underdog again. He says he's still engaged there on a part-time basis and is on the board, but has chosen to focus more of his time and energy on his foundation.

Kindle Fire HD Price Cut a Glaring Hint of New Models to Come

Posted: 09 Aug 2013 10:07 AM PDT

Kindle Fire HDOut with the old and in with the new?

Amazon's become a bit predictable as of late, at least regarding its Kindle line. It goes something like this: Launch a tablet, ride it out with occasional discounts, slash the price one last time, rinse and repeat. If you head over to Amazon right now, you'll notice that the Kindle Fire HD now starts at $159, down $40 from its list price of $199. The most likely explanation is that Amazon is clearing out inventory to make room for a refreshed Kindle Fire HD line.

The price cut could also be in response to Google's second generation Nexus 7 tablet starting at $229 for a model with 16GB of built-in storage and Wi-Fi connectivity. What used to be a $30 premium over the Kindle Fire HD is now a $70 premium. Supporting this theory is the fact that Amazon is listing the reduced price as being available "For a Limited Time," though no other details are given.

In any event, if you're shopping a Fire or Fire HD, the latter is a no-brainer at the sale price. Both go for $159 currently, though the Fire HD currently offers a better value proposition with a 1280x800 resolution (versus 1024x600), Dolby Audio and dual-driver stereo speakers, dual-band Wi-Fi, and longer battery life (11 hours of continuous use versus 8.5 hours).

Nvidia Reports Quarterly Increase in Revenue Despite Steep Decline in Tegra Sales

Posted: 09 Aug 2013 08:56 AM PDT

Nvidia BuildingTegra sales slip into a nosedive

Nvidia this week reported $977.2 million in total revenue for its second quarter of fiscal 2014 ended July 28, 2013, up 2.4 percent from $954.7 million the prior quarter though down 6.4 percent from $1.04 billion in the same period a year ago. This led to a 23.8 percent sequential jump in profit to $96.4 billion, or $0.16 per share. Not too shabby considering Tegra sales fell off a cliff last quarter.

The GPU maker's Tegra Processor business raked in just $52.6 million in revenue in Q2, down a whopping 49 percent sequentially and a stomach churning (for Nvidia investors) 70.7 percent year-over-year.

"These decreases were largely due to lower unit shipments of Tegra 3 processors as customers ramped down production of Tegra 3-based smartphones and tablets, as expected," Nvidia said in a statement. "They also reflect lower revenue associated with the sale of embedded products and game controls, offset by increased revenue from automotive products."

Nvidia's GPU business fared far better, generating $858.6 million in revenue, up 9.3 percent sequentially and 7.5 percent year over-year. There was a slight decrease in notebook GPU revenue, but on the desktop, GeForce GPU revenue jumped 13.8 percent sequentially and 3.9 percent year-on-year, Nvidia said.
