Cooler Master Announces Elite 130 Mini-ITX Case

Posted: 28 Aug 2013 11:57 AM PDT

Cooler Master Elite 130

Successor to last year's Elite 120 features a full mesh front panel

PC peripheral maker Cooler Master on Tuesday announced the launch of a new case that it says improves upon last year's Elite 120 Advanced mini-ITX chassis with a bunch of value added features. It is clear from its spec sheet that the Elite 130, as the just launched mini ITX case is called, is definitely a little more compact and slightly lighter than the Elite 120.

But the biggest difference seems to be the fact that the Elite 130 has a full mesh front panel, which allows for greater airflow. Staying on the topic of cooling, it ships with one 120mmx25mm front fan, which can be removed to make way for a 120mm water cooling radiator, and one 80x15mm side fan.

The Elite 130 supports graphics cards up to 343mm/13.5 inch in length, up to 5 x HDDs and/or SSDs and a full-sized power supply. The complete specs are thus:

  • Material:  Polymer front mesh panel and steel alloy body
  • Dimension: 240 x 205 x 377.5 mm / 9.4 x 8.1 x 14.9 inch
  • Weight    : 3.1 kg / 6.8 lbs
  • M/B Type: Mini-ITX
  • 5.25" Drive Bay: 1
  • 3.5" Drive Bay: 3 (1 from 5.25" drive bay)
  • SSD Bays: 4 (3 from 5.25" drive bays, 1 from the side bracket)
  • I/O Panel: USB 3.0 x 2, USB 2.0 x 1, Audio In & Out
  • Expansion Slots: 2
  • Cooling System: Front: 120mm fan x 1 (installed)
  • Side: 80x15mm fan x 1 (installed)
  • Power Supply:    Standard ATX PS2 (optional)
  • VGA Card: 343mm / 13.5 inch CPU  and 65mm / 2.5 inch cooler height:
  • PSU length: 180mm/ 7.1 inch (w/ less cable management) 142mm / 5.6 inch (w/ full cable management)
  • Warranty: 2 years

Although Amazon has it listed for $43.26, the listing states that those who order the case may have to wait anywhere from 1 to 3 months for the product to arrive.

Nintendo Trims $50 Off Wii U Deluxe Console, Announces 2DS Handheld for $130

Posted: 28 Aug 2013 10:03 AM PDT

Wii U ControllerLet the console wars begin

Nintendo hasn't sold as many Wii U consoles as it hoped it would, and with both Microsoft (Xbox One) and Sony (PlayStation 4) planning to launch next generation gaming systems this holiday shopping season, a price cut seemed inevitable. And so it goes, with Nintendo today announcing a $50 price drop for the Wii U Deluxe, bringing the cost of ownership down to $300, effective September 20, 2013.

There was no mention of what will become of the standard Wii U that currently sells for the same price as the reduced Wii U Deluxe will next month. Nintendo did, however, announce a limited edition Wii U bundle featuring The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Walker HD. This too will be available on September 20.

By dropping the price of the Wii U Deluxe to $300, Nintendo ensures its console is the most attractively priced this holiday of the big three by at least $100. The PlayStation 4 will start at $400 and the Xbox One will go for $500.

In addition to its adjusted living room strategy, Nintendo unveiled a lower cost handheld, the Nintendo 2DS. The 2DS will play all the same titles as the 3DS, only in 2D. It will launch on October 12, 2013 for $130.

Logitech Ultrathin Touch Mouse Fits in Your Pants Pocket

Logitech Ultrathin T630An ultra-portable mouse for Ultrabooks

Notebook makers are building increasingly skinnier Ultrabooks and ultra-thins all in the name of portability, but if you're not a fan of touchpads, you still have to tote around a mouse. Logitech's answer to this is its new Ultrathin Touch Mouse Series consisting of the Ultrathin Touch Mouse T630 in black and T631 in white (the latter is intended for Macs but either rodent will run on both Windows and Mac OS X).

"Our personal technology needs are evolving rapidly, and people expect better design," said Charlotte Johs, Logitech global vice president of brand development and portfolio for PC accessories. "Whether it's a computer, tablet, smartphone or touch-navigation device, people are looking for thin, modern design that works fluidly. We created the Logitech Ultrathin Touch Mouse to give people an ultra-portable mouse that complements today's MacBook and Ultrabook computers."

The slim rodents use Bluetooth with Logitech Easy-Switch technology to connect to your laptop, desktop, or tablet at the same time, and you can switch among them with the flip of a switch. It's rechargeable via USB, and according to Logitech, just one minute of charge time gives you enough power to keep motoring for another hour.

Both are available to preorder now for $70 and will ship next month.

Gigabyte Eyes Record Motherboard Shipments on Strength of Haswell

Posted: 28 Aug 2013 08:16 AM PDT

Gigabyte GA-Z87X-OC ForceSlumping PC sales or not, Gigabyte is gunning for a personal record

You can hardly go a week without reading about how the traditional PC market is in a slump, that computer sales are down, and how mobile devices like tablets and smartphones represent the next frontier. We say hogwash to that latter part -- try editing a batch of RAW camera files on your iPad in a timely manner, for example -- but lest there be any doubt that PCs are still very much relevant, Gigabyte is on pace to ship more motherboards in Q3 than it ever has before in the same quarter.

According to Digitimes and its supply chain sources in Taiwan, Gigabyte is expected to ship 5.2 million of its own-brand motherboards in the third quarter of 2013. That would represent an 8 percent sequential bump in what has historically been Gigabyte's best quarter of the year.

Gigabyte has already shipped 9.9 million motherboards in the first half of 2013, which in large part is due to the board maker's expanding retail network in China. In July, Gigabyte shipped another 1.8 million motherboards, and the company expects to hit the same number at the end of August, plus at least 1.6 million next month (thus arriving at the 5.2 million figure for Q3).

Gigabyte's goal for the year is to ship 20 million motherboards, and it's currently less than 5 million shy of that goal. Whether or not Gigabyte gets there, it largely hinges on the strength of Haswell.

Google Baits Potential Nexus 4 Buyers with $100 Price Cut, But Should You Bite?

Posted: 28 Aug 2013 06:18 AM PDT

Google Nexus 4

Nexus 4 now starts at just $199 outright

Power users will find it a little late in the game to consider a Nexus 4, but if you're still interested in Google's last generation smartphone with stock Android installed, today's a good day to pull the trigger. That's because Google just chopped $100 off the price through the Google Play Store, knocking the Nexus 4 8GB down to $199 and the 16GB model to $249.

That puts the phone on par with subsidized pricing for competing devices, only in this instance, you own the phone outright. Cost has always been one of the draws of the Nexus 4, and now it's even more tempting, though you have to wonder if there's something bigger and better on the horizon.

Certainly at this point the Nexus 4 could benefit from an upgrade. The current version lacks 4G LTE support and it doesn't have a microSD card slot, two glaring weak points on an otherwise well equipped smartphone. What it does have is a 4.7-inch Corning Gorilla Glass IPS display with a 1280x768 resolution, 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.
