We haven't had a knock-down drag-out battle royal between two heavyweight MMOs on Leaderboard in quite a while. And hey, there's no time like the present, amirite?

Let's say that in one corner we have WildStar, NCsoft's sci-fantasy darling. And let's say that in the other corner we have The Elder Scrolls Online, ZeniMax's attempt to take the mega-popular single-player RPG series online.

Choose My Adventure: Introducing Ehrdred the Warden

Choose my Adventure Introducing Ehrdred the Warden
Last week, you voted for me to begin my Lord of the Rings Online adventure with a brand-new character instead of using an existing one. Luckily for me, one of my favorite parts of LotRO is the new-player experience! Memories came flooding back from my first characters and their experiences traversing Middle-earth, but a lot has changed since then.

I created my Man Warden on the Landroval server according to last week's voting and quickly jumped into the Archet questline. After several hours and 16 levels later, I realized that I needed to slow down and let you decide my fate before I got any further. So let's get these votes going so I can play more!

Neverwinter trailer toots its own horn
Claiming that over two million players have tread upon its virtual soil, Neverwinter and its fans have good cause to celebrate. In that spirit, Cryptic Studios has released an accolades trailer to highlight the game's success and critical acclaim. You know the drill: epic music, floating quotes, and lots of dragon fire.

Neverwinter has been expanding since launch, most recently with its Fury of the Feywild content update and the addition of two new companions. You can check out the accolade trailer after the jump.

The Daily Grind: Do you ever play in first-person view?

The Daily Grind Do you ever play in firstperson view
Meet Uggo. I bumped into him in The Secret World the other day as he was trying to rip my face off my skull. I felt bad for him even so; he's got a bit of a skin condition and a slug crawling through his head. I know I'd be cranky in his position.

The weird thing is that I didn't notice all of the incredibly disgusting details of Uggo until I killed him and came in close. Playing in the default third-person view means that I'm not usually in a position to get a good look at what I'm killing, but instead I just see it as an identifiable shape. Whenever I do force myself to go into first-person view, I discover so many more details about the game world and its inhabitants. Unfortunately, it also makes me a bit queasy, and I sorely miss the peripheral vision that third-person perspectives bring.

Does anyone out there play a standard MMO in a first-person view? Maybe you do it to get into the shoes of your character more or to see these details up close and personal. If so, I'd love to hear about it today!

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

          Jukebox Heroes: Fallen Earth's soundtrack

          Jukebox Heroes Fallen Earth's soundtrack
How would you score the apocalypse? What would the end of the world sound like if you put it to music? Perhaps it would be wrapped in a Western twang with notes of regret, longing, uncertainty, and struggle playing throughout. Whatever the end result, it wouldn't be your typical sword-and-sorcery anthem.

This was the task given to the Fallen Earth team of Lead Composer Enrique Varela and Audio Director Michael Franke: to put the apocalypse to music. In addition to faction themes, the team wanted to create music to compliment the emotions that players would most likely experience while traveling the wasteland. "My intentions were to have a range of moods, playing with dichotomies," Varela said. "You have negative or dark moods such as fear, sadness, suspense, danger, and then you have positive or light moods like triumph, tranquility, security."

Franke put it best, not just for Fallen Earth but for all MMO music, when he said, "I really wanted the audio to melt into the game's setting, and become another believable part of the world. For me, the highest compliment is when a player can leave that little check-box for sound alone."

It's a Western apocalypse, and it's all ours to listen to in this week's Jukebox Heroes!

Returning to Prime World in its English open beta

            Prime World
Back in April, I had the opportunity to explore Prime World in its Russian beta. Now, the game is in open beta for English-speakers, so I wanted to update my impressions. Unfortunately, Prime World has developed less than I had hoped in the interim. For example, the screenshot above shows off my mate's Prime World home in contrast with the one I showed you last time. My friend is a bit of a nature lover, so I told her we'd try the red team this time. It's a lovely layout, but this playthrough marked the first time I've seen it because we couldn't see each other's bases -- just as in the old Russian beta.

Playing with other English speakers this time instead of Russian players means I could have chatted about this with them about it but for the game's deafening loading screens (no, really, take off your headset when loading a match; volume control is mute or nothing). A lot of the non-MOBA complaints from my last review sadly still hold true, as do a few issues with the tutorial. While the new additions to the game greatly increased my satisfaction with the combat parts and I want to talk about the new game modes, I still must readdress my issues with the game that haven't changed at all.

              Hyperspace Beacon: SWTOR PvP solutions

              Hyperspace Beacon SWTOR PvP solutions
I will freely admit that I do not have all the answers. I also admit that I believe that BioWare is trying to change the face of PvP in Star Wars: The Old Republic. But I think it's safe to say that the vast majority of the efforts so far have failed to the point that I said it would be more worthwhile for the PvP team to just stop in its tracks. PvP needs a fundamental refocus almost from the ground up. If the team continues to build on the currently shoddy foundation, the whole game will fall under its own weight.

Last week, I talked about some of these foundational issues, but I don't like presenting a problem without also representing possible solutions. But first, let's get an understanding of what players are looking for. I could present the things that I personally want, but that will help only those who play SWTOR for the same reasons I do. We wouldn't have 500,000-plus players in the game if everyone thought the same as I do. So let's take a quick look at player motivation before diving into the solutions.

Sony Online Entertainment's SOE Live event is promising to be bigger than ever this year, as the company is reporting that advance passes are sold out and that walk-up tickets are expected to do the same, and quickly.

SOE Live 2013, which takes place August 1st through 4th at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, is surrounded by hype thanks largely to the long-awaited debut of EverQuest Next. SOE will also host five tournaments, a silent auction, a pool party, and talent and costume contests. Fans of DC Universe Online, PlanetSide 2, and EverQuest may want to check out the official event lineup for details as to when their games will be featured.

We have two Massively staffers on deck in Vegas: MJ Guthrie and Karen Bryan will be covering news as it happens, and Karen is set to host a player panel dedicated to helping guild leaders find better ways to run their guilds at 7:00 p.m. EDT (4:00 p.m. PDT).

Stay tuned: SOE Live starts tomorrow Thursday with a keynote address at 10 p.m. EDT (7 p.m. PDT). You can watch it live on Twitch.tv.

Excalibur takes Arthurian action to mobile devices

                  Excalibur
Claiming to be the world's first mobile sidescrolling MMO, Excalibur is obviously hoping that Guinness Book of World Records will be calling soon, although it might have to wait until the title actually releases. R2Games is preparing to unleash the title on both Android and iOS mobile platforms.

Excalibur puts players in the role of a Knight, Wizard, Archer, or Assassin and tasks them to kill all the things. While it looks like a standard button-masher on the surface, R2Games claims that it's got many of the deeper MMO features that players have come to expect. These include a gear enhancement system, a buff system based on the zodiac, a guild system, co-op play, and other customization options.

We've got the trailer for Excalibur after the jump, so give it a look and see if the knight life is right for you.

Flameseeker Chronicles You get what you pay for in Guild Wars 2
Despite a number of unfortunate sword-clipping issues, it seems that Ellen Kiel is our lead candidate so far in Guild Wars 2's player-decided election! It's close though, and Evon Gnashblade's supporters still have plenty of time to make the push to victory. The playerbase is mired in furious controversy over a number of very pressing concerns: Can the fall of Abaddon possibly live up to our expectations, given that it would take place in a short Fractal? What kind of secrets could the Thaumanova Reactor meltdown hold? Why can Kiel wear her spiffy-lookin' town clothes in combat while we can't?

A more serious problem is how ArenaNet's handling of Aetherized weapon skins has reignited dissatisfaction over the gem store. Granted, it's mostly settled into dark mutterings at this point, but the issue has still been cropping up with nearly every major event. Changes are made to Black Lion chests and event boxes; players give the boxes another chance, hoping to get their money's worth; disappointment follows when that doesn't happen. This is a cycle that's going to keep occurring if we don't acknowledge the reason for its existence.

                    Elsword Night Watcher
Elsword is currently moving through a series of character-specific evolutions, with Rena, the Trapping Ranger, being the latest recipient of a major class overhaul. The story goes like this: After joining a band of elves known as the Night Savers and shattering her magical sword in a fight with an evil king, Rena is awarded new strength and a lighter, more powerful sword that gives her faster and more powerful attacks.

The Night Watcher is Elsword's first female swordsman and uses archery, trapping, and of course, a sword to best foes in battle. Check out the jump for screenshots and a trailer.
