Does CCP's future depend on DUST 514? Posted: 03 Jun 2013 09:00 AM PDT Filed under: Sci-Fi, EVE Online, Interviews, MMO Industry, Free-to-Play, MMOFPS, DUST 514, Sandbox It's been a couple of weeks since DUST 514 launched as a free-to-play title on the PlayStation 3. While it may be too early to tell whether the MMOFPS will be a big success story, a big flop, or something in the middle, Chief Marketing Officer David Reid argues that DUST 514 is vital to the future of CCP Games."The second product is often the big product," he said. "Anybody can have a hit, but can you have two? It's very important for CCP right now to make DUST 514 a success. It has a lot to do with the long-term trajectory of the company. We're definitely thinking about that." Reid says that CCP is not trying to directly compete with MMO industry titans, but is forging its own path with a sustained cult following. He sees DUST 514 as an important step to the growth of the EVE Online universe: "On some level, DUST is a bit of a tracer bullet. A very big tracer bullet, a big investment, but it's a test bed. This could be the beginning of a much more interesting strategy of lots and lots of things joining into Tranquillity, and all being part of that shared economy, those shared politics and that shared universe." Why MMOs stopped getting bigger Posted: 03 Jun 2013 08:00 AM PDT Filed under: World of Warcraft, EVE Online, Economy, MMO Industry, News Items, World of Tanks, Miscellaneous, League of Legends If after looking over the state of MMOs lately you've been left singing, "Where have all the big games gone?" to yourself, Ramin Shokrizade has an answer just for you. A virtual world economist, Shokrizade states that up until EVE Online and World of Warcraft, games grew in size and scope and then stopped. Why? Because it was never about getting big; it was about protecting and ensuring the equity of the gamers.Shokrizade delves into why equity -- the sum of gamers' in-game efforts, such as levels and possessions -- is so important in a game and why those games that ignore protecting this equity don't measure up when it comes to success. He discusses how microtransactions that deal in in-game content destroy equity as well as how expansions that make previous content (such as crafting tiers) obsolete do the same thing. He then goes on to discuss the games that get it right, like League of Legends and World of Tanks. Why MMOs stopped getting bigger originally appeared on Massively on Mon, 03 Jun 2013 10:00:00 EST. Phantasy Star Online 2 English version coming to Southeast Asia Posted: 03 Jun 2013 06:30 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Culture, New Titles, Free-to-Play Despite the fact that Sega delayed Phantasy Star Online 2's North American launch earlier this year, fans of the game in Southeast Asia will be happy to hear that an English version is coming their way as well.A specific release date for either territory hasn't been given, but online game publisher Asiasoft has confirmed in an investor relations report (as reported by Gamespot UK) that they will be distributing both PSO2 and DC Universe Online to the Southeast Asia market. The Daily Grind: How's your Windows 8 gaming experience? Posted: 03 Jun 2013 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: Opinion, The Daily Grind We don't often use The Daily Grind to ask the community for advice, but hey, what the heck. I've got to upgrade to Windows 8 for a non-gaming application, and I'm trying to decide whether to roll the dice and do it on my primary (i.e., gaming) desktop or relegate the new OS and the problem child app to one of my less desirable but more expendable PCs.My hesitation stems from a substantial backlog of Steam games, both new and old, that may or may not function under Windows 8. I'm also curious if anyone has any experience running AAA MMOs like DC Universe Online, Star Wars: The Old Republic, TERA, and others on Windows 8. And no, this isn't a Windows-8-sucks thread, at least from my perspective, it's more of an informal poll. So, in a nutshell, how has your Windows 8 gaming experience been thus far? Has everything gone swimmingly or have you had any issues? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! MMO Week in Review: It does state that a Titan fell Posted: 02 Jun 2013 06:00 PM PDT Filed under: Massively Meta, Week in Review, Miscellaneous At the end of every week, we round up the best and most popular news stories, exclusive features, and insightful columns published on Massively and then present them all in one convenient place. If you missed a big MMO or WoW Insider story last week, you've come to the right post.Yes, it turns out that Titan is not right around the corner after all. For some, this announcement was met with wailing and gnashing of teeth. For others, it was met with wailing and gnashing of teeth regarding the existing wailing and gnashing. As the game thus far has never been seen outside of the development offices, it's difficult to take this loss as a deep and personal loss, but people sure do love to talk about it. In other news, absolutely nothing else of note happened this week in terms of MMOs. But I guess you could check out some vaguely interesting stories past the cut. If you want. EVE Evolved: Get ready for Odyssey Posted: 02 Jun 2013 04:00 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-Fi, EVE Online, Economy, Expansions, Game Mechanics, Patches, PvP, PvE, EVE Evolved, Dev Diaries, Sandbox, Crafting With just two days to go until EVE Online's exploration-focused Odyssey expansion goes live, players have been scouring the test server for information that can give them an edge. Some have been practicing moon surveying techniques for the upcoming redistribution of tech 2 minerals, and others are hoping to get rich quick by speculating on battleship price changes. Explorers are kitting out new exploration ships, theorycrafters are working on new setups for rebalanced ships, and pirates are setting up base in lowsec areas that are about to become fertile hunting grounds.Odyssey isn't quite the Apocrypha-level expansion I've been hoping for, but it certainly seems set to shake things up. Changes to moon minerals will throw nullsec into chaos and hopefully ignite some big territorial wars, and battleship buffs may change EVE's popular fleet compositions. The Discovery Scanner Overlay will make exploration much easier for new players to get into, but will also give pirates another tool with which to hunt down explorers. A new co-operative hacking minigame will also make exploration more of a team sport. But how can you make the most of the expansion from day one, and what can you do today to prepare for it? In this week's EVE Evolved, I look at the new exploration system and other changes you can expect when you log in on Tuesday, and what you can do now to make the most of them. CCP takes EVE and DUST offline due to DDoS attack Posted: 02 Jun 2013 12:15 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-Fi, EVE Online, MMO Industry, News Items, Free-to-Play, DUST 514, Sandbox If you were looking to play EVE Online or DUST 514 this afternoon, you might want to go with your backup plan. CCP has taken its Tranquility server cluster offline in order to deal with a "significant and sustained distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack."Tranquility hosts EVE and DUST players, and while CCP initially reopened the servers, it has since decided to close them down in order to conduct an investigation and "an exhaustive scan of our entire infrastructure." The outage also affects CCP's web presence. You can follow the situation via the company's Twitter feed. Stick and Rudder: The five types of Star Citizen guys Posted: 02 Jun 2013 12:00 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-Fi, Culture, MMO Industry, New Titles, PvP, PvE, Opinion, Humor, Sandbox, Stick and Rudder, Star Citizen, Buy-to-Play I've been through my share of alphas, betas, and early release communities over the years, and without exception, every one of them is chock-full of the same five guys. Oh sure, these guys have hundreds of different forum handles, and in the case of a nostalgia-drenched core title like Star Citizen, some of them may even be old enough to know better. But they're still the same five guys. These guys are in the good pre-release communities and the bad, and while their passion is largely laudible, their busy-body forum hijinks are nothing if not high-lariously predictable.
