Latest EVE devblog graphs exploration site usage in Odyssey
Eve Online's exploration-focused Odyssey expansion has been in full swing for a few weeks now, giving pilots time to really delve in and experience the new mechanics. And while we reflected on Odyssey's impact shortly after launch, CCP's latest devblog gives a fuller picture of that impact on the exploration sites -- literally.

With graphs depicting usage of the top three data and relic sites, the blog illustrates how players have flocked to the exploration sites in droves. The Sparking Transmitter site, for example, has seen almost a ten-fold increase in usage -- and that's even after ignoring the initial spike at release. Combat sites like Angel Forsaken Hub in nullsec, on the other hand, saw a marked decrease in activity since the expansion. The blog also offers other graphs, including showing how the global win/loss ratio stabilized quickly.

Firefall's final beta milestone and live action trailer

Posted: 25 Jun 2013 09:45 AM PDT

Yes, in real life the armor looks kind of ridiculous.
The last closed beta milestone for Firefall is live, and it's a big one. Closed beta testers can explore the new eSports styled PvP game Jetball while taking part in the game's first story-based episode, Blackwater Anomaly. And this is meant as a big thing, big enough that there's even a live-action trailer (starring Tybee Diskin whom you might recognize from the Nuka Break Fallout fan film) past the cut to help get potential players psyched about just what might be going on.

Designed for five-person squads, Blackwater Anomaly sends players out into the storm to examine the eponymous anomaly at Blackwater Marsh, leading to a closer examination of why the Chosen have arrived and what motivates the attack on humanity. If you're intrigued and want to get in on the action before the start of open beta on July 9th, the Founder's Packs will still be available through July 8th. Everyone already in the beta can start enjoying this new content immediately.

    Massively Speaking Episode 253
It's been a busy week with medium- and small-sized news running rampant through Massively's thoroughfares. It's also been a weird week full of redundancies, such as a game that's launched getting a launch and another game that had a title getting the exact same title. Face it: MMOs bring out the weird in all of us, studios included.

Buy your friends a present in Guild Wars 2 with gem store gifting

Yeah, this is going to cost some money.
All right, let's be honest -- you screwed up bad last night in Guild Wars 2. And you'd prefer to not have all of your friends hate you. You're going to need to give gifts, and we're talking real gifts here. Why not take advantage of the fact that the Gem Store now offers the option to gift items to your friends? You can choose the item to gift, select as many recipients as you'd like, and then send them all with a personalized message of your choice.

But what will you gift them? Maybe one of the new items to go along with today's content patch? We're sure some of your friends would like some of the Aetherblade Armor Skins, or perhaps a new Tybalt Backpack Plushie, or a Custom Arena Starter Kit. And after you're done buying gifts, you could always buy more for yourself. Charity starts at home, right? You deserve a treat.

Standalone DayZ looks to be taking cues from EVE Online

        Posted: 25 Jun 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Basically, expect The Walking Dead without any real protagonists.
When you actually build a simulation of the post-zombie landscape, where do you look for inspiration about what happens next? To the stars, according to DayZ's Dean Hall. In a recent interview, Hall discusses the ways that EVE Online creates a persistent world fueled primarily by player interactions and backstabbing, which he sees as the future of the standalone DayZ. Not just in the case of survivors turning on one another, but in the ability to actually create safe regions through the world carved out by player ingenuity.

Hall discusses the possibility of allowing not just player-owned structures but long-term landscape changes, hollowing out bunkers and setting up security systems. The game isn't there yet, but he also mentions that watching The War Z's launch and subsequent burn in some ways helped fuel the development team's commitment to the original vision. It's an interesting look at a game that isn't out there yet, but promises to add more than simply surviving the hordes of mindless undead.

        ArcheAge player-made factions incoming

        ArcheAge playermade factions incoming
For those who don't care for any of the established NPC factions that you typically find in an MMO, ArcheAge has another option: make your own! XLGAMES is prepping a July update that includes the ability to create player factions.

How it works is that apparently players who carve out some territory on the northern continent can then create their own independent faction. It looks like there will be a way to establish relations with other factions, tax local estate owners, and get into scuffles with neighbors. Players won't be able to join multiple factions and become dual-citizens, so choose wisely when the time comes!

[Thanks to Dengar for the tip]

Cloud Imperium released a news blurb touting Star Citizen's newly minted status as the most successful crowdfunded project of all time. The upcoming space sim beat out the $10,266,844 pledged to Pebble Watch to claim the title.

The update also offers a bit of clarity with regard to the recent 300 series trailer. "The video you saw wasn't just made in-engine, it used actual game models," Cloud Imperium explains. "You're looking at the 300i mesh you will see in Star Citizen and not some high-poly fake created for cutscenes and good PR. What you're seeing is what you'll play."

The Daily Grind: When has a beta left you hungry for more?

        Posted: 25 Jun 2013 06:00 AM PDT

I can't wait to crash your nest, birdies.
I'm going to be completely honest and say that I logically have no real need for the Final Fantasy XIV beta any longer. I know enough about the game that I'm ready to jump in once open beta rolls around, I don't doubt that I'll enjoy the relaunch, and everything else I do is just going to be wiped away. So I find myself thinking that really, I can pass on taking part in the testing.

Except every time another weekend approaches I find myself ready to jump right back into Eorzea because what I have played has just made me want more.

The mark of a good beta isn't just that it allows you to provide feedback on broken parts but that it gets you excited about all the stuff that is working. There's an element of enthusiasm to this phase of testing, a desire to keep playing and keep trying new things. So today I ask, when has a beta left you hungry for more? When has the version of the game that isn't ready for launch made you feel a desire for the launch edition more keenly?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Not So Massively: Dota 2 launch, HoN's chaos mode, and D3's expansion

Not So Massively: Dota 2 launch, HoN's chaos mode, D3 expansion not until 2014, and awesome space ships
After almost two years of not-so-closed-beta, Dota 2 has begun the complex process of upgrading its server capacity and slowly transitioning into launch. Heroes of Newerth's developers have been toying with a hilarious new game mode recently in which heroes spawn with a completely random set of abilities. SMITE introduced its newest character, Hun Batz, the howler monkey god, and turn-based MOBA Arena of Heroes officially entered open beta.

Star Citizen teased fans with a video advertisement for its Origin Jumpworks 300 spaceship series; free versions of the ship will be available for in-game credits, while purchaseable versions with lifetime insurance are on currently on sale for cash. Elite: Dangerous showed off concept designs for its holographic cockpit UI and demonstrated the scale of its ships in a terribly british way by putting them next to a scale model of Big Ben.

Fans of Diablo III who have been waiting for its inevitable first expansion heard this week that it probably won't be coming out until 2014. Blizzard clarified that this isn't a delay as the expansion hasn't even been announced yet. And Path of Exile plans to bring back its controversial Diamond Flasks in the next patch, which also brings an interesting new Descent event series.

Take a tropical holiday in Star Trek Online

I'm not sure if I love or hate this ship, but I definitely feel something.
In Star Trek Online, both the Federation and the Klingon Empire face threats from within and without. The Romulan Republic is beset on all sides by enemies, forced to consort with one-time adversaries to ensure that the long-suffering people of the demolished Romulus do not fade into memory. The galaxy is filled with strife, suffering, and a need for brave explorers and defenders. This makes it the perfect time to toss all of your cares away and start relaxing on the luxurious beaches of the pleasure planet, Risa!

The special Lohlunat Festival is approaching, and that means a chance for captains of all factions and races to come to Risa and enjoy the festivities. It also means that captains can get a shot at owning a Risan Corvette, a vehicle built for speed and comfort above all else. And how do you earn the Corvette? Through exploring the island, cutting a move on the dance floor, or taking part in special Floater races across the planet. It's just the thing to unwind after a long day of getting shot at by the Borg, and it means that your tropical vacation can end with a new ship instead of maxed-out credit cards.

EverQuest II shares details about update 67, Darkness Dawns

It's a bit more redness than darkness, but whatever, right?
Are you ready for another update to EverQuest II? Especially one that dusts off some old content, offers some new ways to access existing content, and streamlines the benefits from clearing all of the new content? All of the above is coming in the next major update, Darkness Dawns, slated for release on July 30th. The update will be updating four dungeons from the very first expansion with high-level items and challenges, letting veterans experience old favorites and new players take on a whole new challenge.

The update will also add three new Contested Avatars and the Arena of the Gods, which allows players to pit themselves against Avatars at will for slightly weaker rewards. Players can also start enjoying the new Character Advancement Templates, allowing characters to select pre-built templates for Alternate Advancement and Prestige Abilities or save custom layouts, with the added advantage that these can be swapped without any respec fees. July 30th probably seems like a far-away date, but considering the size of the patch, we're betting it'll be worth it.

Bungie talks Destiny, evades RMT question

            Destiny
Bungie's latest Mail Sack column is up, and the bulk of the conversation centers on its upcoming open-world sci-fi shooter, Destiny. Revealed (or clarified) in the post: fireteam sizes (three), total player allowances for public events (a lot, but not too many), and which month the team is most looking forward to in 2014 (the one in which Destiny comes out).

Also discussed were real-money transactions, though the response from Bungie is about as PR-fluffy as it gets. When asked to what degree real-life money will be used in the game, this was the response:
What we can tell you right now is that the rewards you will gain by playing Destiny - and playing it well - will be earned. You will carve them from the hides of your enemies, after you stomp them into the ground of your favorite destinations.
It makes sense that the folks at Bungie would play that one close to the chest; Destiny is still in a pre-alpha state and anything could change about the game at any time.

The Nexus Telegraph: WildStar needs a business model

No, seriously, bugs. Have you seen these bugs? They're big bugs.
To the surprise of absolutely no one, WildStar is going to have to make money somehow. You don't make an MMO as a charity, after all. But the big and understandable question is how it's going to make money because it's launching into a period when that is, in fact, a viable question.

This is a new development, and not one that everyone is entirely happy with. Back in the day, there was no question about how your MMO would make money; it would charge a subscription fee and that was the end of it. Now there are at least three major potential models, all of which are viable over long periods by all indications. And that means there's some question about what WildStar will do.

So today I want to examine possibilities. Rather than assume that any given model works, I want to look at all three possible launch models and try to forecast reasonable scenarios. So let's start with the most obvious one, suggested by the current environment and the publisher.

CCP's Petursson discusses how big companies get dumb

              Posted: 24 Jun 2013 11:30 AM PDT

A lesson perhaps relevant to many EVE players, as it happens.
CCP Games is doing pretty well for itself at this point. EVE Online is going strong, DUST 514 has been promising thus far, and the company has two more projects in the pipeline. But there's still an underlying focus to the company as a whole, and according to CCP CEO Hilmar Petursson that's a necessity. As Petursson puts it, large companies can get very dumb very quickly unless the people in charge make a conscious effort to avoid it.

Petursson notes that a larger company has more difficulty coordinating and understanding how small changes can make larger impacts, something that requires careful structure and planning to avoid. He points out that the company's loss of focus led to layoffs back in 2011, something that he feels personally responsible for. If you're interested in seeing how the company is trying to keep fluid by adapting to new markets without rushing into trends, you can take a look at the full interview.

European players locked out of resubscribing to SOE's EverQuest II [Updated]

              Closed gates as a metaphor.
It's not easy to be a European fan of Sony Online Entertainment of late. When the company announced that European services would be handed over to ProSiebenSat.1, there was a lot of pushback, but some of that was mollified by the promise that European players with existing accounts could continue to play on US servers with US accounts. Except that for some EverQuest II players, that option now appears to have been locked out via limited credit card options.

Users have reported that when trying to add or change a credit card, several EU countries are no longer listed as valid choices for the country of origin, preventing players from using these cards. Since there are no account transfers for SOE players to migrate to ProSiebenSat.1 accounts, this could mean locking players out of years of work on characters. SOE has made no official response regarding this issue, but it runs directly counter to what has been stated in the past regarding access and account ownership. We've contacted SOE for a response and will update with any further information.

[Update: Dexella on the SOE forums has posted that the studio is "looking into the EU/credit card issue now." Thanks to Erissei and Zjeven for the tips!]
