CCP revamping DUST 514's skill system Posted: 18 Apr 2013 08:00 AM PDT Filed under: Betas, Sci-Fi, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, Patches, PvP, News Items, Free-to-Play, MMOFPS, DUST 514, Sandbox DUST 514's May 6th Uprising patch will revamp the sci-fi shooter's skill system. Among the changes are the removal of multiple prerequisite skills and a new node-based skill tree view that will replace the current list-based approach.CCP is also refunding skill points and ISK and AUR for certain items based on their market value at the time of the respec. "You may have committed to a certain play style, and with an overhauled layout and collection of skills, you may find yourself regretting some of your prior choices," explains DUST creative director Atli Mar Sveinsson on the PlayStation Blog. "We have thus decided that it is far better to respec not only the skills but items as well. In short, you will get your skill points back and the ISK and AUR value of any item that is removed from your inventory." EverQuest's Shadow of Fear lets you hear the voice of Luclin Posted: 18 Apr 2013 07:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Galleries, Screenshots, Video, EverQuest, Expansions, Patches, Previews, Free-to-Play, Dungeons EverQuest's Shadow of Fear just launched; it's the update and second part to the Rain of Fear expansion that released in November. Yes, you read that right: This is the old-school MMO's 19th expansion. If that's not impressive enough for, the list of content that comes with the patch should hold over vets for a long time. If you're level 100, you'll be able to enjoy new zones and content and brand-new mechanics. The essence of fear is literally raining down in the form of crystalline shards. While players fight to restore balance, an ancient city has been resurrected with no explanation. Mysteries? New content? New spells, items, missions, raids quests, and storylines to discover? Yeah, we wanted in on that. We hung out with producer Thom Terrazas, lead designer Jonathan Caraker, assistant lead designer Julie Burness, and assistant lead game designer and Douglas Cronkhite for a video tour of the new update. Read on to hear what we thought and catch the brand-new trailer too. The Daily Grind: Do launch day hassles make you quit a game? Posted: 18 Apr 2013 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Darkfall, Launches, MMO Industry, PvP, Opinion, Sandbox MMO launches have come a long way. While no MMO is bug-free, developers have made substantial strides in this department over the past decade. Similarly and for the most part, gone are the days when mile-long queues prevent you from playing on day one.And then there's Darkfall. Or more accurately Darkfall Unholy Wars. To Aventurine's credit, I can at least purchase and log in to the game unlike the catastrophe that passed for the original 2009 launch (and also to be fair, I'm a big fan of the game). It still took forever and a day to patch, though, and that was after I had to leave the client torrent download on overnight. So, how about it Massively readers? Do launch-day hiccups irritate you enough to move on to other games, or do you generally stick it out? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! Free for All: Ecol Tactics Online has a fun story but weak combat Posted: 17 Apr 2013 06:00 PM PDT Filed under: Game Mechanics, Opinion, Free-to-Play, Browser, Hands-On, Casual, Free for All I took a look at Ecol Tactics Online not so long ago and mostly enjoyed what I found. When the game recently launched into open beta, I knew I had to check it out again. It's possible that the game I experienced before the open beta would be vastly different from the one I'd find later on, but everything felt familiar even though I was given access to higher-level play and cash shop.I enjoyed the storyline and quest text much more this time around. Last time, gameplay appeared pretty standard, but now that I know what to expect with combat and performance, I can enjoy the story a bit more. But a player can ignore the story completely and still find the game enjoyable. That's an issue with many MMOs in general. A lot of the time the story has no bearing on a player's character. This time I slowed down and read up most of the quests I came across and discovered some pretty cute tales and toons. The combat is still fun as well. Of course, turn-based combat is what this game is all about. Choose My Adventure: Star Trek Online VI - The Rediscovered Country Posted: 17 Apr 2013 05:00 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-Fi, Game Mechanics, Opinion, Star Trek Online, Free-to-Play, Choose My Adventure Captain's Log, Stardate 86291.3. My hearing with Starfleet Command resulted in a promotion to Commander, command of a new ship, and full command of the USS Xiang Yu pending the new ship's completion. It also resulted in a trip to the infirmary after I passed out in shock. After the Xiang Yu's several military deployments, my new mission aboard the ship is much simpler. Despite Starfleet's growing data about the Gamma and Delta quadrants, there remain large stretches of the Alpha Quadrant yet unexplored. My crew will be seeking out intelligent life within these areas of space, seeking to establish peaceful relationships and expand the Federation. It's been only a short time since I was first placed in temporary command, but it seems to have stuck. Our ship's cannons are ready, our scanners have been upgraded, and our expanded crew roster is acclimating. There's an entire galaxy to explore out there. I look forward to going where no one has gone before. Star Trek Online introduces UI updates Posted: 17 Apr 2013 04:30 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-Fi, Game Mechanics, News Items, Star Trek Online, Free-to-Play, Dev Diaries Star Trek Online's LCARS (the Library Computer Access and Retrieval Systems) is in the process of getting an overhaul. The "next, next generation" UI will have a cleaner aesthetic and allow for more user control. A lot of the incoming changes were prompted by the upcoming inclusion of the Romulan faction. Using the present tradition of coloring everything on the UI to represent a given faction (in this case, that would mean a crazy green glow) didn't seem the way to go. Instead, a complete revamp was begun. The revamp includes interchangeable color schemes, oodles of customization options, and more immersive elements. Be sure to check out the most recent Captain's Log to get Teri's take on the UI changes and other tasty morsels on the Tribble test server. EVE Online collecting player stories, CSM elections halfway over Posted: 17 Apr 2013 03:00 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-Fi, Video, EVE Online, Contests, Events (Real-World), Events (In-Game), News Items, Sandbox In a lot of ways, EVE Online players are a lot like vikings. Or so CCP's new promotional video would have you believe. It draws comparisons between early Icelandic settlers carving out their place in the world to players in the galaxy of EVE Online doing much the same. It also makes the fine point that we would know nothing about the settlers of Iceland were it not for the few who took the time to write about the events of the time. The fine scholars at CCP want to preserve the history of EVE Online in a similar way, and they want players' help to do it. Internet spacefarers can go to the EVE True Stories site and submit their favorite tales, which will be voted upon by fellow players. One lucky player will even win a trip to Iceland to visit CCP's studios and take in the splendor of the country. EVE players and politicians may also want to remember that the 8th Council of Stellar Management elections are halfway done, and voting will close on April 17th (that's today!) at 7 p.m. EST (midnight GMT). So if you want to make your voice heard, head on over to the election page and cast your ballot. Also, don't forget to check out the True Stories video after the cut.SM Continue reading EVE Online collecting player stories, CSM elections halfway over EVE Online collecting player stories, CSM elections halfway over originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 17 Apr 2013 17:00:00 EST. A Mild-Mannered Reporter: Grim and gritty vs. light and funny Posted: 17 Apr 2013 02:00 PM PDT Filed under: Super-hero, Lore, Opinion, A Mild-Mannered Reporter A few weeks back, I saw a comment from a reader mentioning that the biggest problem with Champions Online was that it felt goofy. And that's true to a point. Certainly it never gets to the extremes of the Silver Age, but there's a definite feel of larger-than-life heroes battling it out without too much concern for plausibility. I'd peg it at late '70s to early '80s in terms of corresponding comic book eras. For some people, this is a problem. And it's one that's worth discussing because each of the major titles has approached its overall theme slightly differently. But all of them have hit what I feel is a very important note insofar as all of them are unabashedly games about superheroes. Superheroes are weirdly inconsistent partly because many of these same heroes have been in stories for nearly a century. It's really hard to reconcile a version of Batman who shoots and kills his foes with the modern incarnation or the modern brooding character with the light-hearted antics of the Silver Age. This is problematic when you have fans of different kinds of Batman all playing DC Universe Online. MMO Family: Is it time to regulate MMO cash shops? Posted: 17 Apr 2013 12:00 PM PDT Filed under: Business Models, Culture, MMO Industry, Opinion, Kids, MMO Family, Family, Miscellaneous "I want it now!"We're all familiar with that screechy demand by Veruca Salt in Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. And for those of us raising children, it's an all-too-common request. When kids want something, they'll pull out all the stops, and for many kids, that brand-new video game warrants an Oscar-winning tantrum. MMOs, on the other hand, are a different breed because the bulk of kid-friendly MMOs are now free-to-play and make use of cash shops and a variety of subscription plans in order to generate revenue. In essence, MMOs have to work for their money now rather than rely on the traditional monthly subscription, but that has led to questions about how far studios should go in getting players to part with their money. In some instances, it's led to children (and some adults) spending large amounts of money without fully understanding what they've done. Should there be regulations on marketing practices of game companies? A recent announcement by the U.K.'s Office of Fair Trading regarding web and app-based games might hint at that answer. Neverwinter Days: Choosing your first class Posted: 17 Apr 2013 11:00 AM PDT Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Classes, Opinion, Free-to-Play, Neverwinter, Neverwinter Days Ready to play some Neverwinter? It looks as though Cryptic is ready to pull the trigger on this bad boy, with a soft launch (open beta with no wipes) starting on April 25th for founders and April 30th for everyone else. While I'm not surprised that the studio is moving ahead with the launch, I still wish that Neverwinter were being held back a few months to get more testing time and to add more classes. You see, five classes doesn't seem like enough to me, especially in a D&D MMO. Yes, there's plenty of room for growth here, and I'm sure that Cryptic will be charging for each new class rolled out, but five? That's pretty paltry, especially when you read this prospective list. But I'm not in charge of development and schedules; I'm just a humble gamer and writer. So I'll lift my chin and get excited for the fact that, hey, we're going to be playing non-wipeable Neverwinter soon! That means that we all have just a couple of weeks to make a crucial decision: What class will we roll first? Let's take a look at the big five and see what the options are.
