Hacker Attack Results in Thousands of Player and Non-Player Character 'Deaths' in World of Warcraft

Posted: 08 Oct 2012 09:54 AM PDT

World of Warcraft HackThroughout history, wars and plagues have wiped out entire cities and civilizations, leaving behind nothing but corpses and tears. Strangely enough, the same thing happened yesterday in World of Warcraft when hackers took advantage of an exploit that allowed them to march through various realms, destroying every character they came across, even non-player characters (NPCs).

Thousands of players simply dropped dead, including everyone in Orgrimmar and Stormwind, to name just two of the affected realms. Blizzard later acknowledged the exploit, which it promptly hotfixed, though not in time for those who met their maker unexpectedly.

"Earlier today, certain realms were affected by an in-game exploit, resulting in the deaths of player characters and non-player characters in some of the major cities," Blizzard announced in a forum post. "This exploit has already been hotfixed, so it should not be repeatable. It's safe to continue playing and adventuring in major cities and elsewhere in Azeroth.

"As with any exploit, we are taking this disruptive action very seriously and conducting a thorough investigation. If you have information relating to this incident, please email hacks@blizzard.com. We apologize for the inconvenience some of you experienced as a result of this and appreciate your understanding."

A video on YouTube (embedded above) shows the carnage in hilarious detail (unless you're one of the affected, then you have our deepest sympathies. Honest.), as a character waltzes through Stormwind killing everything in his path. Throughout the video you hear sounds of characters letting out their last gasp of breath before crumpling to the ground.

Angry Birds Star Wars Reaches Our Galaxy on November 8

Posted: 08 Oct 2012 09:21 AM PDT

Angry Birds Star Wars ThumbnailIf your two favorite things in this world are Star Wars and Angry Birds, brace yourself because we're about to blow your mind. The two mega franchises are joining forces, so to speak, in a new game appropriately called Angry Birds Star Wars, and it's launching next month! According to Rovio, the upcoming title will combine the elements from Angry Birds and Angry Birds Space with the characters, stories, and settings of the Star Wars universe.

"This is the best Angry Birds game we've ever done. It's the best parts of Angry Birds with all new cutting-edge gameplay set in in a galaxy far, far away," said Peter Vesterbacka, the Mighty Eagle and CMO of Rovio. "As a big Star Wars fan myself, I'm really excited about this new universe. The Force is definitely strong with this one."

The collaboration doesn't end on the software side. If there's one thing Rovio and George Lucas have in common, it's a penchant for merchandise, and you can expect a lot of it from Angry Birds Star Wars. Everything from themed Halloween costumes to action figures and plush toys will be available at select retailers starting October 28, Rovio said.

Angry Birds Star Wars will launch to iOS, Android, Amazon Kindle Fire, Mac, PC, Windows Phone, and Windows 8 on November 8, 2012. No word yet on price.

GM Aims to Create 1,500 Information Technology Jobs in Michigan as Part of Insourcing Strategy

Posted: 08 Oct 2012 09:05 AM PDT

GM CrowdWorking in Information Technology (IT) isn't especially glamorous to begin with, at least not outside of geek circles where the humor in Saturday Night Live's Nick Burns skits are completely lost, but at least you could count on steady employment. Even during the recession there's been a spattering of growth in IT spending, and if you happen to be an unemployed IT guy or gal living in the midwest (or willing to relocate), General Motors (GM) may soon have a job for you.

GM on Monday announced plans to open an Information Technology Innovation Center in Warren, Michigan, which it expects will create 1,500 high-tech jobs over the next several years. It's one of four planned Innovation Centers in the U.S., the first of which was opened last month in Austin, Texas, where 500 news IT jobs will be created, GM said.

"GM is executing an IT best practice by insourcing IT services and making them a strategic part of assuring GM remains a fast-moving leader," said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group in San Jose, Calif. "This is also one of the best opportunities for IT professionals to work in the automotive industry."

The in-sourced IT business services model is part of GM's overall IT Transformation strategy that entails recruiting recent college graduate and experienced professionals for the jobs being created. The effort is being led by Chief Information Officer Randy Mott, formerly an executive with HP.

Android Pioneer HTC Posts Lowest Profit in 6 Years

Posted: 08 Oct 2012 06:05 AM PDT

HTC Logo with AndroidHTC continues to struggle to find a way to flip the kind of profits it did during the company's heyday, back when it was moving handsets like gangbusters and practically had a license to print money. But the times, they are a-changin' and the HTC of old is having trouble competing in this new landscape dominated by Apple and Samsung, the latter of which has picked up the Android torch that HTC helped ignite. Ginormous profit dips are the norm for HTC these days, which today posted a record 79 percent drop in quarterly profit.

The once spunky handset maker reported that its third-quarter net profit was 3.9 billion New Taiwan dollars, a nice sounding number until you convert it to American currency, which works out to $133 million. Still a nice chunk of change, only profits are headed in the wrong direction. A year earlier, HTC's profits totaled NT$18.64 billion, or about US$636.28 million.

HTC once ranked as the biggest Android smartphone player, but has since been shoved aside by Samsung, which jumped ahead of HTC in the U.S. in 2011. Samsung's flagship Galaxy S III device is one of the most popular smartphones in the world and a large reason why the company expects to post a record profit in the third quarter.

HTC Windows Phone 8X and 8S

At the Mobile World Congress earlier this year, HTC revealed a new smartphone strategy. Rather than continue to take a shotgun approach to the Android ecosystem, HTC decided to focus its efforts on a single product line, the HTC One. HTC's intention was (and remains) to put all its efforts into building a handful of really good devices rather than bombard the market with dozens with mediocre handsets. It's too early to call that strategy a failure, and it will be interesting to see how the company's upcoming Windows Phone 8X and 8X devices fare when they debut in November.
