Guild Wars 2 crafter reaches level 80 first

Guild Wars 2 crafter reaches level 80 first
Although folks talk about how much there is to do and how many places there are to explore in Guild Wars 2, the first confirmed level 80 character goes to *drum roll* a crafter! That's right, Surfeuze -- a member of the French guild War Legend -- has hit the level cap by simply crafting with guild donated materials.

Reaching max-level, however, doesn't give Surfeuze an instant win button; he still needs to earn reputation points to purchase items and missing achievements. Also, since maps scale to a player's level, if Surfeuze decides to go out and experience other parts of the game, he won't be able to tear through the content as a level 80. Nonetheless, his accomplishment before the game even officially launches is still quite the achievement.

Massively's launch guide to Guild Wars 2
Oh, 2007: Those heady days when Guild Wars 2 was set to feature a beta in... 2008! It took a few more years than initially expected, but the wait was worth it because now, it's ready -- Guild Wars 2 officially launches tonight at midnight PDT!

But how ready are you? Jump past the break (jumping joke!), where we've organized Massively's many years of GW2 coverage to help catch you up on the game, its systems and features, its races and classes, and its lore.

        Excelsior!

The Daily Grind: Should PvE crowd-control work in PvP?

        Posted: 27 Aug 2012 06:00 AM PDT

        Warhammer Online
One of my very biggest pet peeves about playing a Protection Warrior in World of Warcraft is the fact that taunt does not work in PvP. Some players argue that having platemail and a huge bar of health makes up for my losing a core class ability, but I say platemail and a huge bar of health is pretty useless when I can't force players to attack me.

World of Warcraft is hardly the only game that nerfs core skills for PvP. Ultima Online, for example, offers music skills like Peacemaking and Provocation that can't be used on other players, rendering Bards ineffective Felucca-side. But it needn't be that way. Warhammer Online was a breath of fresh air; at launch, I ran around on my Ironbreaker, gleefully taunting other players and forcing their attention to me. Hit me, fools! Muahaha!

Sure, I'd rather see more organic and tactical combat such that taunt as a mechanic isn't even necessary, and some players might say Guild Wars 2 does just that. But what about those games that can't just cut taunt from the skill roster? Do you think PvE crowd-controls like taunt should work in PvP?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

EU EverQuest II transition to ProSiebenSat1 delayed
European EverQuest II players who have been expecting the impending transition of their game to ProSiebenSat.1 have been granted a reprieve of indeterminate length. After a less-than-smooth transition for DC Universe Online, Sony Online Entertainment is delaying EQII's move to the European partner's control.

SOE Community Relations Director Linda Carlson, aka Brasse, took to the EQII forums to announce the delay. She also noted that once the issues identified in DCUO's move are ironed out, the changeover will move ahead; at that point, affected players will be notified by email and via the forums.

Players wanting to learn more about the transition can read up on the FAQ.

MMO Week in Review: So Guild Wars 2 is a thing now

MMO Week in Review - Guild Wars 2
At the end of every week, we round up the best and most popular news stories, exclusive features, and insightful columns published on Massively and then present them all in one convenient place. If you missed a big MMO or WoW Insider story last week, you've come to the right post.

Guild Wars 2 opened its doors to prepurchase players Friday night, kicking off a somewhat rocky headstart, depending whom you ask. Massively spent the preceding week delivering news and videos for the genre's latest blockbuster; namely, we previewed Twilight Arbor, gem store items, character dances, and racial armor, and then we discussed GW2 e-sports, the Tyrian economy, and account linking. That's a lot of stuff!

Expect even more goodies in time for the official launch Tuesday, but for now, check out the rest of our top MMO stories, helpfully located in Divinity's Reach. I mean, behind the break.

EVE Evolved: Making your first billion ISK

            EVE Evolved title image
A lot of the people I introduce to EVE Online ask about the possibility of playing for free by buying game time codes with in-game ISK. It's a legitimate way to turn EVE into a free-to-play game, but the rising price tag of a 30-day PLEX can make it seem as if only veteran players can afford to do it. New players typically scrape together just a few million ISK by the end of their free trial periods, making the 500 million per month required to pay via PLEX seem like a tall order.

With the right guidance, a new player can actually pull in over a billion ISK in his first month or two of play and quickly become able to afford a PLEX each month. Farming missions requires a bit of time investment but can pull in 20-30 million ISK per hour once you're set up, and exploration and salvaging can lead to some unexpected big hauls. There are also plenty of newbie-friendly corps that run group activities, and those who aren't interested in grinding to their first billion ISK might try their hands at trading or turn to a life of crime. It's all possible in the sandbox.

In this week's EVE Evolved, I give some practical tips on making your first billion ISK, from scraping together the seed capital to buy your first big ship to reliable farming methods and some more underhanded methods.

              One Shots Guild Wars 2
Guild Wars 2's headstart kicked off this weekend, and the official launch is this week, so you know what that means! Yep, One Shots is going to feature the most visually appealing game of all time: Ultima Online! Just kidding. It's Guild Wars 2 day, and we've got an extra-long eyecandy edition of One Shots to celebrate.

Who gets to headline today's column? A generous reader named Vazzaroth, who graciously opened up his entire vault of Guild Wars 2 screenshots to Massively. We're including two of our favorites here, but feel free to crash his site pawing through the rest! They're just past the break, alongside a bundle of our favorite Guild Wars 2 submissions received since April.
