SOE President John Smedley himself requested a Saving Private Ryan-esque feel for a serious portrayal of the epic battle players will experience. The result, however, was not quite what was expected.Check out the final product (including Matt Higby's impressive acting debut) in the humorous video after the cut. Rumor: Retailers instructed to destroy Final Fantasy XIV Posted: 23 Aug 2012 07:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Launches, MMO industry, Rumors, Final Fantasy XIV Is Square-Enix issuing a termination order for store copies of Final Fantasy XIV? That's the disturbing rumor that's emerged today, as a retailer on the NeoGaf forums posted an email stating that the company has levied a decree to get rid of the remaining stock. The email states, "Square is discontinuing Final Fantasy XIV. They will be doing a field destroy credit of $16.00 each." This move may be in preparation for the upcoming version 2.0 of the title, now called A Realm Reborn, which is slated to release for both PC and the PlayStation 3. A Realm Reborn will actually remove some of the content from FFXIV, possibly necessitating a new product, or else Square-Enix may just be looking at rolling out a new package for the relaunched title. When asked about the rumor, the company declined to address the email, and stated that the beta will happen later this year. World of Warcraft won't raise free-to-play above level 20 Posted: 23 Aug 2012 06:30 AM PDT Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Business models, Free-to-play If you're holding your breath in hopes that Blizzard will relent and open up World of Warcraft's free trial to the post-level 20 experience, please, please take another breath. You'll die otherwise. The studio confirmed that it has no plans to expand its free-to-play offering past the initial 20 levels.Producer John Lagrave said in an interview with CVG that the studio is content with the way things are. "[The free trial gives] a good sense of what our game is," he said. "You know, we looked at it lots, we looked at whether level 20 would give you a good sense of what our game is, and we think it does. There's also a lot of things in the game that are special that we want to reserve for our paying customers." Lagrave pointed out that Blizzard has been beefing up the trial experience by including additional features that were previously reserved for subscribers only. The Daily Grind: Do you use MMORPG mobile apps? Posted: 23 Aug 2012 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: Betas, Sci-fi, Game mechanics, MMO industry, New titles, Opinion, Free-to-play, The Daily Grind, MMOFPS, PlanetSide 2 So PlanetSide 2 has a pretty spiffy looking mobile app on the horizon. Assuming the developers make an Android version, I'll definitely check it out thanks to the slick-sounding map updates and the nifty stat-tracking functionality.I'll probably also enjoy a superfluous geek moment or two by opening the app on my tablet and my phone while sitting in front of my That said, I'm not a fan of the small screens and crappy controls that go along with mobile gaming, so PS2's mobile app is something I'll rarely use after the novelty has worn off. What about you, morning folk? Do you use the mobile apps tied to your favorite MMORPG, or are you content to wait until you're in front of your computer to check in with the game? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. Choose My Adventure: Once more into The Kingdom of Loathing Posted: 22 Aug 2012 06:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Video, Culture, Opinion, Free-to-play, Browser, Casual, Humor, Choose My Adventure, Guides, Livestream, Miscellaneous, Sandbox, Dungeons Wow, how time flies. Here it is, the second-to-last Choose My Adventure for The Kingdom of Loathing. I have to admit I am surprised at how much I am enjoying the experience so far. The reasons I am enjoying it might be surprising, but it's possible that my time with KoL is nothing new. After all, the game is one of surprises and twists as well as options for play. I've also discovered that the world of KoL is a steady one. I really expected it to be much more loosely assembled because the variable pace and lazy artwork seemed indicative of a developer that doesn't care.It turns out that quite a lot of care has gone into The Kingdom of Loathing, whether the developers are aware of it or not. Judging by the podcast they host twice a week, I suspect they are too consumed by developer details to notice just how deep their own world goes. (Developers often get a bad case of tunnel vision.) I find the communication each week to be refreshingly different from what I see from many other developers. Most seem too afraid to say anything at all, much less to host a scheduled podcast on which they curse and discuss game mechanics. So in this last vote of the run, be sure to make your voice heard! Give me advice! Dark Age of Camelot calls for the guards with a new patch Posted: 22 Aug 2012 04:30 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Dark Age of Camelot, Game mechanics, Patches, News items So you've captured a Relic in Dark Age of Camelot. The challenge is finding a spot to keep it, since it's obviously a big draw for enemy players. But the latest patch makes it a little bit easier to defend your captured Relics in non-Relic Keeps by adding in special Relic Guards. These defenders spawn in the same keep as a captured Relic to aid its defense, but they also spawn at lower levels as the number of total Relics controlled by a given realm grows. The patch also brings along major changes for Maulers and Realm abilities, both of which should change existing player strategies significantly. Last but not least, the patch adds several new resist tokens to existing realm vendors and tinkers with values for the existing resistance spells. All in all, these changes should help shake up the existing balance of power in the game and force new strategies to come to light. Enter at Your Own Rift: RIFT's upcoming housing boom Posted: 22 Aug 2012 04:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Expansions, RIFT, Enter at Your Own Rift, Housing Have no doubt, it's been an absolutely barnburner of a week or so for RIFT. As Trion Worlds chugs toward the unknown release date for Storm Legion, we've seen the reveal of the first new soul (the Harbinger), a special annual subscription offer, a tour of several areas of the expansion from Gamescom, and oh yeah, news that Trion's all but eliminating factional barriers. And with all that, do you know what everyone's jabbering on about in the forums? Housing. Housing, housing, housing! It doesn't surprise me; as a long-time proponent of player housing, I know full well the powerful attraction and appeal housing has when done right (emphasis on the last three words there). Housing gives players a sense of attachment to the game world, an outlet for creativity, and a personalized place to socialize. And finally we've heard the first concrete details (with video footage!) of RIFT's dimensions. There's no avoiding it; there's going to be a huge housing boom in RIFT come this fall. So what will it look like? Free for All: RaiderZ's Mark Hill talks punching, slashing, and beta Posted: 22 Aug 2012 03:30 PM PDT Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Game mechanics, Interviews, Free-to-play, Massively Interviews, Free for All, Sandbox I was first introduced to RaiderZ back at E3 2011. The game has been in testing since then and has apparently grown a lot. I've had some time now to try the beta and chop up some monsters, and I have to say that the action is frantic but the open-world is not something I am used to from action-based MMOs.Mark Hill, Senior Producer for RaiderZ, answered my questions and explained just why we should be excited for this new free-to-play title. I'll let you read his answers, but I'd also ask that you try it out when you can. It really is a nice step forward from other action-based titles, but you can judge that for yourself. And after all, we love non-instanced combat, right? WildStar Wednesday details crafting and economy Posted: 22 Aug 2012 03:00 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, Economy, News items, WildStar, Crafting Here we are at yet another hump day, but there's no need to moan and groan. Carbine Studios is here to relieve the midweek slump with a new WildStar Wednesday, this time focusing on the upcoming sci-fi title's economic and crafting systems. If you're the type of player who would rather be a trade magnate than a fierce warrior, then this WildStar Wednesday is for you. According to the devs, player crafting "will play an integral role" in WildStar because of the game's item modification system, and they stress that "modifying your gear [is] about choice and customization, rather than following a blueprint for the 'best' choices." The developers also reveal that dye and costume systems will be in the game, allowing players to perfect their outfits so they can explore the universe in style without sacrificing function. For the full interview, which includes a few more juicy tidbits on the costume and crafting systems, head on over to WildStar Central and check it out. MMO Family: Pirate101 and the Pixar effect Posted: 22 Aug 2012 11:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Previews, Opinion, Free-to-play, Hands-on, Casual, Massively Hands-on, First Impressions, MMO Family, Family, Pirate101 Back at the ranch, it's been a pretty busy (and off the grid) summer. We've spent the bulk of it at the grandparents' house at the beach, complete with snorkeling, beach combing, hikes to a nearby island, and lots of late nights discussing the finer points of the Harry Potter series. That made for many late nights, but a couple of weeks ago, I suddenly didn't have to struggle to get my kids to go to bed. Turns out, they wanted to play a certain game to wrap up their day, and that game was Pirate101. What's interesting is that they liked it for different reasons than I do, and I actually found myself rethinking my approach to games by watching them play.In this week's MMO Family, we'll look at some first impressions from a kid's-eye view and explore how KingsIsle is able to hit all of the right notes (again) to make a compelling game for both kids and adults. Posted: 22 Aug 2012 10:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Culture, Game mechanics, Opinion, Free-to-play, Casual, Roleplaying, Mabinogi, Sandbox, Why I Play How do you define a sandbox MMO? In my opinion, sandbox MMOs are often described in ways that are much more complicated than they deserve. To me, they are simply MMOs that allow players to play how they want by providing systems -- real, game-impacting systems -- that foster unique character growth. These systems can be represented in a lot of different ways, however. You might grow a unique city in an MMORTS or customize an avatar in a social sandbox like Second Life. The general rule is that there are no rules in a sandbox, within the limits of the particular game, of course. Even then, sandbox players can be some of the most stringent rule-makers and followers. Just ask a Darkfall or EVE Online player how to get the most DPS and she'll rattle off a series of rules, essentially providing a class cheat-sheet. In other words, sandboxes are much like their themepark cousins, only with many more choices for character development. The themepark rules might be left out of a sandbox, but the sandbox communities often fill the void with new guidelines.Mabinogi provides so many systems to grow a unique character with that it's ridiculous. I can easily log in and spend an hour just decorating my avatar, crafting goods, exploring new areas, flying around in the hopes of stumbling across trouble, or growing my character by leveling any one of the possible hundreds of skills. However you describe a sandbox, Mabinogi should be one of the first on the list of examples. Let me show you three reasons why.
