Ouya to Have OnLive's Game Streaming Service at Launch

Posted: 28 Jul 2012 05:01 AM PDT

Having far outstripped its original Kickstarter funding goal of $995,000, Android-based video game console Ouya has already earned a place in the annals of crowdfunding history. But the real challenge for the Ouya team will begin when the $99 machine hits the market next year, for their ultimate goal is building a great console. While the possibility of Ouya foundering under the weight of all this hype can not be ruled out, prenatal celebrity has its fair share of advantages too.

It is due to this hype that the Ouya team has managed to attract game streaming service OnLive to their platform. OnLive announced the availability of its cloud gaming service on Ouya in a blog post Friday. According to the announcement, the service will be available on the hacker-friendly console at launch.

"OnLive will deliver a full console-class experience, bringing hundreds of top-tier games from more than 80 publishers to the OUYA console for play on demand," wrote OnLive General Manager Bruce Grove.

"Instant demos will be available for nearly every game in our ever-growing library-from eagerly anticipated indie titles like Ravaged, to hot blockbusters like the upcoming Darksiders® II. Players can experience up to 30 minutes of each game for free before deciding what to buy. If they like it, they can continue playing where the demo left off."

MSI Trots Out CR41 Multimedia Notebook

Posted: 28 Jul 2012 05:01 AM PDT

Micro-Star International is currently busy refreshing its C-series multimedia notebook line. But instead of getting through with the update in one fell swoop, the Taiwanese vendor is taking its own sweet time, announcing new notebooks one at a time. While it was the 15.6-inch CX61/CR61 last week, it's the slightly smaller CR41 this time.

The 14-incher's royal brown chassis packs a 1366x768 (16:9) LED display, an Ivy Bridge CPU, integrated graphics, up to 8GB of RAM, up to 720GB of hard-drive storage, and a DVD Super Multi optical disc drive. Further, the CR41, whose tapered profile resembles  a sports car to MSI, includes Intel 802.11 b/g/n Bluetooth V4.0, two USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports and HDMI 1.4. Like the CX61/CR61, it too is capable of lasting for as long as 7.5 hours on its 6-cell, 4,400mAh battery.

"The color film print technology gives it character and natural refinement that make it stand out from the crowd," MSI said in a press release Friday. "The CR41 is the perfect mobile companion when you're enjoying some summer rays."

There's no word on pricing and availability yet.

Before game director Hideki Kamiya brought us Ōkami and Bayonetta, he designed a stylish 2D brawler for the GameCube called Viewtiful Joe. In a plot stolen from an Arnold Schwarzenegger film, Joe jumps into a movie in order to save his girlfriend.

Join Tim Turi, Andrew Reiner, Jim Reilly, and myself as we warp time in Viewtiful Joe and then warp our minds during the Replay Roulette.

Nintendo 3DS XL Unboxing And Comparison

Posted: 28 Jul 2012 05:01 AM PDT

We've got a 3DS XL in the office, and we snapped a bunch of pictures of it next to other handhelds for all your comparison needs. First up, a comparison of the box. The system may be larger than the original model 3DS, but Nintendo has been able to use their collective Tetris skills to make everything more compact.

Here's the system out of the box. The model we got in the office is the black and blue model, but there will also be a red and black model available when the system launches on August 19. The system has a matte finish that feels much softer than the 3DS, and it also does much better with fingerprints.

The system comes with all the same paperwork and AR cards. In the photo on the right, you can see what all the trash looks like discarded on the floor, guest starring my right foot. I'll clean it up later.

Here you will see the DSi XL, the original model 3DS, and PlayStation Vita blocking off any and all escape for the 3DS XL in the middle.

This will give you a better idea of the screen size compared to its competing systems. I used the DSi XL to take a picture of the 3DS XL just to create confusion. Also, please ignore the giraffe; he's a jerk.

One of the more random advantages of the 3DS XL is the abandonment of the telescoping stylus. The two styli are about the same size, and you no longer have to take the extraneous step of extending your stylus once removed from the slot in the system. The stylus is also much easier to reach now as it has been relocated to the right side of the system which you can see in the image below.

The last photo shows a few close up elements of the 3DS XL. The headphone jack has been relocated from the center of the system to the left. It's difficult to tell in the photo, but the d-pad and the circle pad have been tweaked slightly. Both have a more pronounced concave in the middle. The XL's 3D slider no longer lights up, and it also clicks into the off position, which makes it much easier to push the slider to the lowest 3D effect possible. Finally, and possibly my favorite new addition (besides the screen size upgrade), is that the home, start, and select buttons are now separate buttons. They always felt strange on the original model, requiring too much pressure to activate. They feel much better this time around.

I'm hard pressed to find anything I prefer about the original model of the 3DS. The plastic feels nicer, and the edges are now rounded so it feels much, much more comfortable to hold in your hands. The handheld will be available in North America on August 19 for $199.99.
