The Daily Grind: What game have you judged without playing it?

Second Life offers you the best dance halls.
Okay, let's face it, there are a lot of MMOs out these days. And MMOs aren't like single-player games, where you can jump in and play for a few hours to get a decent idea of the gameplay. No, to really get an idea of what an MMO is like you need to sit down and play for quite some time, get a feel for the community, chat with other players...

It's a long road, and no one can walk it for every game. So we wind up judging games out of hand. We form an opinion about games that we've never played based on screenshots and snippets of reviews. We decide that Aion is a grindfest, Second Life is a nightmarish adult playground, Age of Conan is a bug-filled exercise in silliness, and Wizard101 is exclusively for children below age 10.

But there's more to these games. Each one of these games has a lot more going on than that simple and short description -- a description that may not even be accurate now, if it ever was true. So what about you? What game have you formed an opinion on without any play time, either now or in the past?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

The Tattered Notebook: Why SOEmote is good for gaming

The Tattered Notebook Why SOEmote is good for gaming
Sometimes, the real fun with MMOs is trying to figure out what exactly is planned, and how it will affect your game of choice. Right now for EverQuest II, that's definitely the case, because there are a lot of quiet changes that keep you on your toes.

We recently saw an article posted about EQII tradeskills, and another announcing the new Hero's Edge items, which give you a leg up in the game and are supposedly there because of majority support for them in a recent in-game poll. On top of that, we're knee-deep in the EQII dungeon maker contest, which pits players against each other to see who can make the best player-made dungeon in the Poet's Palace map. But what trumped all that this week was the announcement of SOEmote, a new feature that lets you add animations to your character and change your voice in chat to match your toon. What is SOEmote and is it a good addition to the game? This week's The Tattered Notebook will examine both questions!

The Mog Log: What crafters can do in Final Fantasy XIV

A Mog Log header by A. Fienemann
A couple of weeks ago, I was chatting with one of our fellow writers about MMO design. This, as you might imagine, is actually a fairly common topic of discussion amongst Massively staff members. (It's beaten out slightly by talk of cats and horrible puns, but still.) Said writer was lamenting the fact that we haven't seen a game in years that allows players to really focus on a non-combat role and level up without having to march out and kill things.

"Yes, we have," I countered. "Final Fantasy XIV lets you do that."

"Well, yeah, but you have to kill stuff to get materials and get money to start with, right?"

"No, you can just craft the whole way through." And as I said it, I realized that one of the real shames of the game's launch was that everything the crafting and gathering systems do correctly wound up being overshadowed by other issues. There's a reason I started calling the game a sandpark when I was writing my first impressions, because the devotion to non-combat gameplay options is almost peerless among more modern games. And it's worth some tribute.
