Six Female Characters that Do It Right

Cover Story: In a world dominated by male lead characters, these six females stand out.

n the male-dominated world of video game protagonist, it can be difficult to remember the members of the opposite sex that stand out. Granted, this could simply be a matter of sheer volume, since male characters tend to headline far more games than women do. Yet, in other cases, it also boils down to women being placed in weaker roles than the men in their world. The following six female characters from the past decade exist to remind us of the potential for an equal opportunity future in video games, one where male and female characters both share the stage as capable equals.

or many, Half-Life 2 represents the pinnacle of the first-person shooter experience. It had everything: An immersive environment, a compelling story, amazing visuals and most of importantly of all, the ability to players feel as though they truly mattered. Yet, in spite of its overwhelming popularity, only a small percentage of its fans know about the collection of experimental art-house mods that eventually followed.

Robert Yang's "Radiator" series is a part of this cadre. Set within the modern world, his slice-of-life vignettes are absent the usual outsized ant lions and parasitic crustaceans. Instead, they deal with things closer to home: Awkward dates, the constellations, troubled marriages, reconciliation, and how people are seldom dissimilar from one another.

3DS XL Avoids Rocking the Boat While Introducing Improvements

3DS XL

Nintendo releasing a 3DS hardware revision was an inevitability; it was only a matter of how long the company would wait before doing so. When no announcement was made at E3, it looked as if we would be waiting at least a few more months, until perhaps the Tokyo Game Show in September, before plans for one would be revealed. Instead, giving us little notice once again, the company broadcasted yet another Nintendo Direct event last night, and along with an announcement regarding Namco Bandai's involvement in the development of the next Super Smash Bros., Nintendo unveiled the 3DS XL.

Much like the DSi XL, the 3DS XL is essentially the exact same piece of hardware as the existing model, only with significantly larger screens and a $200 price tag. More specifically, it has screens 90 percent larger than those found in the standard 3DS, measuring in at 4.88 inches on top and 4.18 inches on the bottom (compared with 3.53 inches and 3.02 inches, respectively, for the regular 3DS). As an added perk, the battery life is also improved, which is a welcome development considering that is one of the 3DS' most glaring weak points.

Cover Story: The Need for Real Same-Sex Relationships in Games

I

n the end, it was sheer, morbid curiosity that got me. I didn't particularly like Liara T'Soni--Mass Effect's blue-skinned, mono-gendered temptress, and I resented the attention heaped on the "alien lesbian sex scene" by various media outlets. But I went through with it anyway because I wanted to see what the fuss was all about.

The verdict? Well, I think it's fair to say that the relationship was clumsy. In the scenes leading up to the 'big moment,' Kat Shepard morphed from a stone cold killer to a sex pot, shamelessly tossing out innuendo after innuendo. Liara, for her part, went from a brilliant, century-old scientist to being coy and naive. It was honestly painful to watch, and when at last the pair adjourned to the bedroom, it was even less authentic (or interesting) than I was hoping.
