Spirit Tales reveals lore behind Spirit Forms

Posted: 03 May 2012 04:27 PM PDT

Have you been wondering what, and why, Spirit Forms (the animal-like forms characters transform into) exist in Spirit Tales? The Spirit Tales team has revealed new background information behind the game’s Spirit Form System:

At the time of the formation of the great continent, when the mysterious force still moved within the fabric of the world, the Southern tribes paid homage to the Guardians of the earth. The Guardians, beloved and respected among the tribes, made their homes in the quiet recesses of the Kingdoms, where they, at the behest of their closest followers, shared their knowledge and bequeathed their secrets unto those who were worthy. As time passed, and the ancient ways that once held sway in those Southern lands faded into memory, the Guardians became more and more like the creatures of myth, and as their only remaining followers merged again into the still waters of creation, the Guardians passed purely into legend.

Seeing the plight that had befallen them swell with the changing tides, the Guardians passed into spirit, prolonging the peace and harmony that still reigned in the hearts and minds of the people. Aware at the time however, of a growing darkness that loomed in the North, the Guardians chose to forgo their return to the source of things in order to remain in the world as a strength and power in those whose heart was pure. In the tribes that continued to honor the old ways, the secrets that were imparted so many years before were somehow unearthed and reborn again under the shadow of the Northern onslaught; and in the souls of the valiant and fearless individuals that made up the Glorious Shield, the Guardian spirit was resurrected, enabling them to transform into the embodiment of their respected Guardian to vanquish all those who oppose the path to peace.

Spirit Tales goes into open beta on May 10.

Has Cooperation in MMO’s Faded?

Posted: 03 May 2012 01:53 PM PDT

Cooperation has always been a huge contributor to MMO success, but it seems to have lost its initial meaning in the present structures of MMO's today. This isn't something that has occurred overnight, cooperation has seemed to slowly decline with each passing year. Now I am not saying that there is absolutely no cooperation at all anymore, I am just saying that it hasn't been as noticeable in the last couple years. I remember the days when people would spend every waking hour with a group of people enjoying the content together. In the past this meant you would join a group of individuals to finish a certain quest, and stay with that group of individuals even after the quest was over. Now people will join a group just so they can finish a certain quest chain and then leave the group with no interest in sticking around and meeting new players.  I'll admit I am guilty of this myself from time-to-time, but it really isn't acceptable, especially in a type a genre that banks on getting people to play together.

It seems these days players want more solo aspects in MMO's rather than diving into the community within the world. This isn't wrong by any means, but it can put a hindrance on the player's full experience when they just want to keep to themselves and cannot be bothered to interact with their fellow community. There are times when this is appropriate, such as when some players keep to themselves to gather their thoughts and enjoy the peace and quiet. Yet sometimes it seems that the community isn't fully engaging in the atmosphere that is between their fingertips. There are times when players want to be left to their own devices, but there should always be that strive to meet new players and interact.

It's not that MMO's nowadays are going for a strict single-player experience; it is that the community of people playing MMO's are comfortable doing things their own way and enjoying the game at their pace. There is nothing wrong with this, but it can be frustrating when people refuse to join your group because they would rather do things on their own instead of taking the time to help out their fellow players. This isn't ALL players mind you, but there are those kinds of people and they make it difficult to fully enjoy the experience.

Understandably people change, mature, grow hair on their face, and lose sight of what once was. Despite this, it cannot be disregarded that the communities have changed from what they were many years ago. Cooperation in mmos is far from dead but players haven't been as lively in communities as they were a couple years ago. Ultimately, this could just be boiled down to personal bad luck and I could be trying to group up with a malicious jerkbot whose sole purpose is to crush my dreams of ever being in a group with him/her. Or alternatively, I could be completely insane and wrong on the subject. The bottom line is that I have wiggled my way into many different MMO communities over the years, but presently I’m finding it is more difficult to wiggle my way in with people who are to apathetic to wiggle even a little.

Jagged Alliance Online has released a major new update that includes PvP changes and an account reset.

The PvP system has been retuned to include improved matchmaking, pre-and-post battle healing, a centralized PvP area on the world map, and new global leaderboards. The world map has also been retuned to show the difficulty of missions and achievements on the map, as well as some user interface adjustments.

The update includes an account reset for all accounts, meaning all players will have to create new companies (although they will keep their gold).

Jagged Alliance Online is published by gamigo, which also publishes Black Prophecy and Loong.

Jagged Alliance Online gets comprehensive update
Hamburg, May 3, 2012 – The latest milestone of the turn-based strategy game Jagged Alliance Online brings with it a reworked PvP system, an improved world map and adjustments to the difficulty of the game. As a result, the mercenaries that players know and love can be hired much earlier on and are no longer only available to high-level players.

The changes to the PvP system apply mostly to matchmaking, which now finds equal opponents more quickly. A new global ranking list, which shows the best PvP players in all game modes, has also been added. The world map now has a centralized PvP area that connects the PvP missions, which were previously separate. To provide a better overview and help players find a suitable mission more quickly, the difficulty of a mission is now shown on the world map.

Jagged Alliance Online is currently in the open beta phase of testing. Registration is free and there are no monthly subscription fees.
