Has Cooperation in MMO’s Faded? Posted: 03 May 2012 01:53 PM PDT Cooperation has always been a huge contributor to MMO success, but it seems to have lost its initial meaning in the present structures of MMO's today. This isn't something that has occurred overnight, cooperation has seemed to slowly decline with each passing year. Now I am not saying that there is absolutely no cooperation at all anymore, I am just saying that it hasn't been as noticeable in the last couple years. I remember the days when people would spend every waking hour with a group of people enjoying the content together. In the past this meant you would join a group of individuals to finish a certain quest, and stay with that group of individuals even after the quest was over. Now people will join a group just so they can finish a certain quest chain and then leave the group with no interest in sticking around and meeting new players. I'll admit I am guilty of this myself from time-to-time, but it really isn't acceptable, especially in a type a genre that banks on getting people to play together.
It seems these days players want more solo aspects in MMO's rather than diving into the community within the world. This isn't wrong by any means, but it can put a hindrance on the player's full experience when they just want to keep to themselves and cannot be bothered to interact with their fellow community. There are times when this is appropriate, such as when some players keep to themselves to gather their thoughts and enjoy the peace and quiet. Yet sometimes it seems that the community isn't fully engaging in the atmosphere that is between their fingertips. There are times when players want to be left to their own devices, but there should always be that strive to meet new players and interact.
It's not that MMO's nowadays are going for a strict single-player experience; it is that the community of people playing MMO's are comfortable doing things their own way and enjoying the game at their pace. There is nothing wrong with this, but it can be frustrating when people refuse to join your group because they would rather do things on their own instead of taking the time to help out their fellow players. This isn't ALL players mind you, but there are those kinds of people and they make it difficult to fully enjoy the experience.
Understandably people change, mature, grow hair on their face, and lose sight of what once was. Despite this, it cannot be disregarded that the communities have changed from what they were many years ago. Cooperation in mmos is far from dead but players haven't been as lively in communities as they were a couple years ago. Ultimately, this could just be boiled down to personal bad luck and I could be trying to group up with a malicious jerkbot whose sole purpose is to crush my dreams of ever being in a group with him/her. Or alternatively, I could be completely insane and wrong on the subject. The bottom line is that I have wiggled my way into many different MMO communities over the years, but presently I’m finding it is more difficult to wiggle my way in with people who are to apathetic to wiggle even a little. |
